10 Photo Assignments to Inspire and Challenge Your Skills

Liz Masoner is a professional photographer and she shares her tips and techniques on photo editing and how to photograph nature, portraits, and events with film and digital cameras. Liz has over 30 years of experience and she is the author of three books on photography.

The best way to learn photography is to practice, though sometimes you can get stuck in a rut and not know what to shoot. That is why photographers love assignments; they give us a purpose and an idea of what to photograph.

Why Are Assignments Important?

Self-assignments are key to any photographer's growth. Even professionals with decades of experience will work on personal assignments that they may never get paid for. The goal of any self-assignment is to spur creativity, solve problems, learn new techniques, and challenge yourself.

As you start out in photography, you're probably filled with excitement and ready to shoot anything you can. That being said, sometimes a little direction and guidance are necessary.

Below, you will find ten photography assignments. Each covers a new topic, skill, or concept and they were chosen to help you learn how to see as a photographer. They are meant to be a personal challenge that you can complete at your own pace and with no outside judgment, simply as a means to practice and improve your photography. Hopefully, you will learn something new with each assignment and be able to use that in every photograph you take in the future.

Remember when composing your images to keep in mind the basics: the rule of thirds,  shutter speed , aperture,  depth of field , and  exposure .

Assignment #1: Up Close

This assignment encourages you to get close and personal with your subject. It is an exercise in viewing a common object in a new way and examining its finer details.

  • Choose an object that you see or interact with every day.
  • Focus on a small part of it, get as close as your camera will allow you to focus, and shoot away.
  • Try to capture different angles and unusual lighting to add to the mystery of this tiny world.

From the whiskers of your cat to a fragile Christmas ornament, and even common soap bubbles, there is an entire world that we often overlook because we don't get close enough.

Assignment #2: Motion

Photography is a static medium which means that it doesn't move. Conveying a sense of motion is often crucial to capturing a scene or emotion and it is an essential skill for photographers to practice.

The goal of this exercise is to understand how shutter speeds can be used to convey motion.

  • Choose a subject or series of subjects that will allow you to convey motion in your images.
  • It can be slow motions, like that of a turtle, or fast motion, like a speeding train.
  • Blur it, stop it, or simply suggest that there is motion in the photograph.

Challenge yourself to capture the same motion in different ways. For instance, you might go to a race track and stop the movement of the cars completely in one image, then leave the shutter open and allow them to blur out of the frame in the next.

Assignment #3: Shadows

Shadows are everywhere and they are vital to photography because this is the art of capturing light. With light comes shadows and when you begin to look at shadows as a photographer, your world will open up.

  • Take a look around for shadows and record them with your camera.
  • You could show the shadow as the total focus of the image. Perhaps the shadow is incidental to the subject.
  • Is the shadow natural or created by flash?

Shadows are integral to creating depth in a two-dimensional medium such as photography. Take some time to seriously explore the "dark side" of the light.

Assignment #4: Water

Water is everywhere in photography and it presents many challenges. There are reflections and movements to work with and in this exercise, you will take a deeper look at water.

  • Find water anywhere: lakes, streams, puddles, even the glass on your kitchen table.
  • Pay attention to reflections and use them to your advantage in the photographs. Use this opportunity to get familiar with a polarizing filter (a very useful tool in your camera kit) so you can accentuate or eliminate reflections.
  • Play with the motion of a stream or the crashing waves. Notice the difference between stopping the flow of water and allowing it to blur to create a real sense of movement.

Be sure to make water the subject and not an accent to the image. Water alone is beautiful and mysterious and your challenge is to explore all of its potential as a subject.

Assignment #5: Leading Lines

A classic assignment in photography schools, 'leading lines ' is a popular and fun subject. The goal of this assignment is to learn how to direct the viewer to your subject using lines.

  • Choose a subject then look around for lines in the scene that you can use to 'lead' the viewer to the subject.
  • Find an interesting line then determine what the subject of your photograph is.
  • Remember that lines can be man-made or natural. For instance, the yellow line down the middle of the road or a tree branch. Even a person's arm can be a leading line of their face.

Use this assignment as an excuse to take an afternoon photo excursion. Walk downtown or in the woods and look around you for interesting lines that lead the eye to a subject. There is an amazing assortment of lines out there in the world and once you begin to see them, you won't be able to stop.

Assignment #6: Perspective

How do you normally stand when you shoot? If your answer is straight up like a 5-foot-something human being then this assignment is for you. The perspective assignment challenges you to view the world from an entirely new perspective, which in turn gives the viewer a new look at the ordinary.

  • Take another afternoon or evening for a photo excursion wherever you like.
  • This time, every time you find something to photograph, stop!
  • Ask yourself: How would a squirrel see that tree? How would a robin view that birdbath? How would a snake view that log?
  • Take your photographs from very high or very low angles. Get on your belly or stand on a chair, whatever you have to (safely) do to get the 'right' angle on your subject.

If you pay attention to professional photographs, many of the images that have the WOW factor are photographed from extreme angles. People enjoy these photos because they've never seen an object from that viewpoint. It is new and unique, and you can train yourself to shoot with this in mind.

Assignment #7: Texture

You may have captured a few textural details in the 'Up Close' assignment, but this assignment takes that to the next level. The goal in this one is to study textures and forget about the object itself: the texture becomes the subject. You will also begin to realize how light affects the appearance of texture.

  • Find a few objects that have very detailed textures like trees or rocks, even knit sweaters or woven rugs.
  • Photograph them as close as your lens will allow.
  • Use different angles and capture the same texture as the light changes. Notice how the different lighting directions and camera angles can change how much texture appears.

Textures are all around us and many of the best photographs in the world play up the textural element. This assignment should teach you how to recognize and accentuate those elements in your photos.

Assignment #8: Color Harmony

Color is important to photography because the world is full of color. This exercise requires a bit of study in color theory, which you will then put into practice in your photographs.

Do you remember art class in elementary school? You may have learned that yellow and blue make green, but color theory goes beyond that. There are cool and warm colors, complementary and contrasting colors, neutral colors, and bold colors.

It can get quite complicated, and photographers should have a basic understanding of color so you can use that when composing photographs. You don't have to study color like a painter would but can use tricks used by interior designers to influence your color decisions.

  • Once you have an idea of color theory, take another photo excursion and put what you've learned into practice.
  • Capture photographs with the primary or tertiary colors.
  • Look for complementary colors then contrasting colors to photograph.
  • Try finding a scene to photograph that is filled with neutral colors, then one that uses a bold color to 'pop' from the scene.

This is an advanced lesson, but one that any photographer working with color images will find useful. As you practice working with colors, it will become second nature and you will know how to work with color to change the feel of your images.

Assignment #9: Emotions

Take a photo of a person smiling or scowling, right? Not so. The intent of this assignment is to convey emotion in photographs  without  a face.

  • Take photographs that express each of the basic emotions: happy, sad, and mad.
  • How would you express the feeling of anger with no person? What about happiness? Sadness?

This is a purely conceptual assignment, but it is important to be able to relay emotion in your photographs and you might not always have a person available to do that with. Challenge yourself to think deeper about this one.

Assignment #10: Don't Look!

Are you ready to put your photography skills to the test? In today's world of digital cameras and the ability to see image captures right there on the LCD screen, photographers are losing some of the skills needed to visualize a photograph.

In this assignment, your challenge is to shoot as if you were using a film camera. That means that you will not look at the photographs you've taken until they are downloaded on your computer. Instead of relying on the camera's screen to see if you 'got the shot' you will rely on your instinct and knowledge, just like photographers did before digital photography. Can you do it?

  • Plan a photo excursion to a particular location and permit yourself to photograph only 36 images (a roll of 35mm film).
  • Turn off your camera's LCD screen so it does not show you the image after you have taken it.
  • If you cannot turn off the camera's screen, cut a piece of thick paper and tape it over the screen. Use masking or painter's tape so you don't leave a residue on the back of your camera.
  • Go out and shoot your 36 frames, thinking carefully about each image because you don't have an endless number of shots. Bonus points if you turn your camera to completely manual settings for focus and exposure.
  • Don't peek at your photos until you get home and download them.

How did you do? Were you able to get good exposures on your own? How did it feel to be 'blind' and not know how your image turned out right away?

This is similar to what it is like to shoot with film and it does require you to think harder about every image you take. Next time you shoot, slow down and pay attention, pretend that the screen is not there and rely on your own skills to create a great image. You will be a better photographer in the end.

  • Digitize Paper-Based Assignments with Gradescope

by Joe Olivier | May 2, 2024 | How-tos

A professor speaks in front of a class of adult learners.

“Grading is my favorite part of being a professor,” said no professor ever.

While the principles and practices of “un-grading” have received attention recently, most teachers–and institutions for that matter–require grades as a means of evaluating student learning and communicating to stakeholders about student performance.

Increasingly, instructors and departments at the University of Chicago have adopted tech tools, such as Gradescope , to make grading workflows more efficient. Gradescope is an online grading tool that simplifies the process of assessing both scanned, pen-and-paper assignments and digital assessments.

This post will focus on digitizing traditional pen-and-paper assignments such as quizzes, exams, and problem sets. A future post will focus separately on programming assignments and online assignments in Gradescope.

Gradescope at the University of Chicago

While any department may benefit from Gradescope’s affordances, departments such as mathematics, computer science, statistics, economics, biology, and chemistry are some of the biggest users of Gradescope at UChicago. The most popular types of assignments are variable length (homework and problem sets), fixed length (quizzes and exams), and programming assignments.

Hannah Lant , Assistant Instructional Professor of Chemistry, teaches large enrollment classes and uses Gradescope for managing paper-based exams. She points out that Gradescope combines “the traditional benefits of paper-based exams” with the advantages of grading digitally. Graders working on one platform and using shared rubrics tend to produce better feedback, according to Lant. Gradescope also generates valuable statistics that can be used to discover where students encounter the most challenges. “If you’re a data freak, Gradescope is really awesome,” according to Lant.

In addition to saving time, creating consistency, and leveraging data, instructors who use Gradescope can also limit students’ use of generative AI tools by administering exams during class.

Supported Paper-Based Assignment Types

Gradescope supports the following assignments which are pen-and-paper based:

  • Exam/Quiz : This type of assignment is for fixed-length assignments that rely on a template that you provide, such as an exam or quiz. By default, instructors or TAs scan students’ work.
  • Homework/Problem Set : This type of assignment is for variable-length assignments which do not require a template. By default, students upload their work as a PDF or use their device’s camera with the Gradescope app.
  • Bubble Sheets : Similar to Scantron, this is an assignment type that is completely multiple choice. Students use the Gradescope Bubble Sheet Template to fill in their answers, and after scanning, the submissions can be graded automatically against a key that you provide.

Paper-Based Assignment Workflow

The workflow for these types of assignments in Gradescope looks like this:

  • Create assignment in Gradescope : Select the appropriate assessment and adjust the settings to your liking. For example, consider enabling anonymous grading to reduce the potential for bias.
  • Create assignment in Canvas : If you want to pass grades back to Canvas from Gradescope, create an assignment in Canvas and link it to the Gradescope assignment. For details on how to do this, see “Post Grades to Canvas” in our knowledge base article on Gradescope for faculty .
  • Scan student work : Depending on the type of assignment, you or your students will scan their work.
  • Grade submissions : Add a pre-built rubric or begin building one dynamically in the app. While grading, you can annotate student work, re-use previous comments, and assign points. You can also collaborate with TAs and graders for quicker grading, and if you wish, grade on a per-question basis.
  • Send and export grades : When you’re finished grading, you can post the graded student work back to Canvas. If you want students to review your markups and/or rubric items, you can publish the graded assignments in Gradescope for their review.
  • View analytics : See questions and rubric-level statistics to better understand what your students know and identify common stumbling blocks.

Gradescope has become a valuable asset to many faculty and departments at UChicago. It’s reshaping the grading landscape, especially for courses with large enrollments. Both instructional staff and students appreciate how Gradescope merges the familiarity of paper exams with the efficiency of digital grading. If you’d like to learn more about Gradescope and how to use it, please get in touch with UChicago ATS.

An AP photographer dazzles with a drone’s view of a colorful field in Germany

Michael Probst has been working as a photographer and editor in Germany for over 40 years.

He’s covered everything from the fall of the Berlin Wall to Olympics and soccer World Cups, but one of his favorite things to do is make feature photos, the off-the-news assignments that tell their own story.

Here’s what he had to say about creating this extraordinary feature image.

  • One Extraordinary Photo

Why this photo

I like to shoot features in nature. There aren’t many things that are nicer than watching the sun rise in the outskirts of Frankfurt with all sorts of animals that you don’t find later in the day.

When the rape fields - plants of the mustard family whose seeds yield an oil used in cooking (canola) and for industrial uses - near the city started to blossom, I drove around to find locations with good looking fields of the yellowing flowers. They are found every year in different places.

When I found two or three fields that could be nice, I returned the next day with my drone - once it was in the air, I saw that the fields were still too green. I tried again a few days later and the fields were the brilliant yellow I was looking for.

New Orleans Pelicans forward Zion Williamson (1) goes to the basket against Los Angeles Lakers forward Anthony Davis and forward Taurean Prince in the first half of an NBA basketball play-in tournament game Tuesday, April 16, 2024, in New Orleans. (AP Photo/Gerald Herbert)

How I made this photo

I tried various altitudes with my drone between 30 and 120 meters (yards). The drone was up for about 25 minutes waiting for a red car to come by.

If things that you shoot with a drone work or not, you only find out once you are up in the air . A lot of my efforts fail.

Why this photo works

For me, green and yellow always work for some reason, and the red car adds a different color. But I actually don’t think too much about why a picture works or not. I like it or not. I try to discover things where it’s worth taking a picture.

I don’t often shoot people because in Frankfurt we don’t have assignments with important people, and shooting interesting people on the street is not allowed without asking. That makes it sometimes quite complicated because most people don’t want to be photographed in Germany - they don’t trust the media anymore.

Man or bear? Hypothetical question sparks conversation about women's safety

Women explain why they would feel safer encountering a bear in the forest than a man they didn't know. the hypothetical has sparked a broader discussion about why women fear men..

assignment paper photo

If you were alone in the woods, would you rather encounter a bear or a man? Answers to that hypothetical question have sparked a debate about why the vast majority say they would feel more comfortable choosing a bear.

The topic has been hotly discussed for weeks as men and women chimed in with their thoughts all over social media.

Screenshot HQ , a TikTok account, started the conversation, asking a group of women whether they would rather run into a man they didn't know or a bear in the forest. Out of the seven women interviewed for the piece, only one picked a man.

"Bear. Man is scary," one of the women responds.

A number of women echoed the responses given in the original video, writing in the comments that they, too, would pick a bear over a man. The hypothetical has people split, with some expressing their sadness over the state of the world and others cracking jokes. Some men were flabbergasted.

Here's what we know.

A bear is the safer choice, no doubt about it, many say

There were a lot of responses, more than 65,000, under the original post. Many wrote that they understood why the women would choose a bear.

"No one’s gonna ask me if I led the bear on or give me a pamphlet on bear attack prevention tips," @celestiallystunning wrote.

@Brennduhh wrote: "When I die leave my body in the woods, the wolves will be gentler than any man."

"I know a bear's intentions," another woman wrote. "I don't know a man's intentions. no matter how nice they are."

Other TikTok users took it one step further, posing the hypothetical question to loved ones. Meredith Steele, who goes by @babiesofsteele , asked her husband last week whether he would rather have their daughter encounter a bear or a man in the woods. Her husband said he "didn't like either option" but said he was leaning toward the bear.

"Maybe it's a friendly bear," he says.

Diana, another TikTok user , asked her sister-in-law what she would choose and was left speechless.

"I asked her the question, you know, just for giggles. She was like, 'You know, I would rather it be a bear because if the bear attacks me, and I make it out of the woods, everybody’s gonna believe me and have sympathy for me," she said. "But if a man attacks me and I make it out, I’m gonna spend my whole life trying to get people to believe me and have sympathy for me.'"

Bear vs. man debate stirs the pot, woman and some men at odds

The hypothetical has caused some tension, with some women arguing that men will never truly understand what it's like to be a woman or the inherent dangers at play.

Social media users answered this question for themselves, producing memes, spoken word poetry and skits in the days and weeks since.

So, what would you choose?

Young Fan Takes on Dwayne Johnson in Rock, Paper, Scissors at Target: See the Cute Video!

“You know I wasn’t leaving this store without making sure this kid gets his ‘I beat the Rock at Rock, Paper, Scissors’ story,' " the actor said of the interaction

assignment paper photo

Dwayne Johnson/Instagram

Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson is always in dad mode!

The actor and former wrestling pro, 52, ran into a young fan during a trip to Target, and instead of snapping a pic or signing an autograph, the pair — ever-so-punnily — played a game of rock, paper, scissors together.

In a video of the exchange, which Johnson shared in an Instagram post on May 4, the two had an intense rivalry in the towel aisle after the kid challenged him to a match.

After Johnson won one round by — fittingly — playing “rock,” his opponent took the loss like a champ, and the star offered up a rematch.

“Aw, come on, you know I’m going for the rock all the time. Want to go again?” he asked, and the young fan obliged.

Then, the duo ended up with four draws in a row before, once again, Johnson won using “rock” — but their rivalry still wasn’t over.

Elsewhere in the store, their face-off continued, starting with two draws before — finally! — the actor’s young fan took home a sweet victory, beating Johnson by playing “scissors.”

Victorious, the child threw his hands up in the air, and the video ended with a GTA-inspired freeze frame and text that read: “Mission passed! Respect +”

In the caption, Johnson shouted out his opponent for his persistence — and hinted that yet another rematch may be in their future.

"Gotta respect this kid’s tenacity — he ain’t taking an L in public from The Final Boss,” the actor wrote, adding, “You know I wasn’t leaving this store without making sure this kid gets his ‘I beat the Rock at Rock, Paper, Scissors’ story.' "

“Good job, kid,” he added. “Payback is coming!!”

Never miss a story — sign up for PEOPLE's free daily newsletter to stay up-to-date on the best of what PEOPLE has to offer, from juicy celebrity news to compelling human-interest stories.

When Johnson isn’t dueling kids in the aisles of Target, he’s got three of his own to take care of at home.

The star is a proud girl dad to three daughters : Simone, 22, whom he shares with ex-wife Dany Garcia, and Jasmine, 8, and Tiana, 6, whom he shares with wife Lauren Hashian .

Speaking with PEOPLE about fatherhood in 2023, Johnson said, "I've reached a point in my life where I can create my own schedule, which has really been nice, because it wasn't always that way, and I'm really lucky.”
