Part 1: Designing a Custom Pencil

Posted by Musgrave Pencil on November 26, 2018

Making a Custom Pencil

Custom pencils are not only a memorable way to share useful information with your customers, clients, and colleagues, they’re also an awesome vehicle to showcase your brand’s personality.

Designing a custom pencil has some unique considerations to address before your perfect design lands in the jar on your desk.

Our upcoming blog series will help guide you through the process and make sure you have the perfect custom pencil for your needs.

Design Decisions

Shape and style.

Before any graphics are added, start with the right shape and style:

Why do I need custom pencils? On the surface, the answer to this question may be as simple as “Because I like pencils,” but thinking about a specific purpose for your pencils will help narrow down the specs for what should be included in the final layout. Think about who will be using your pencils, as well as where they’ll be distributed. Are these pencils to give out to customers? Are they for your employees? Will they be handed out at an event, tucked in a goodie bag, or shared with a group of kids? This will help you determine if you need an eraser, the shape and size, and even the kind of graphite you select.

What is my budget for custom pencils? Custom pencil prices vary depending on the type of pencil you’d like customized, as well as the print methods you’d like to use (more on that later). Defining your budget for a custom project up front is helpful, especially if you want to explore options for upgrades like sharpening, custom boxes, or colored erasers.

How many custom pencils do I need? Our factory imprints pencils in batch sizes by the gross (one gross equals 144 pieces). Orders start at 5 gross (720 pencils) for standard length pencils, and 10 gross (1,440 pencils) for golf pencils. Although 720 pencils may sound like a lot, consider that pencils have an infinite shelf life (they don’t dry out or go bad!). So, for example, if you need pencils for a tradeshow or annual conference, perhaps avoid including the year in your design so that you can use them again in the future.

Once you’ve formed some ideas around why you need custom pencils, you can start gathering the specifics that bring your brand to life. What does your brand look and feel like?

If your pencil is going to have text, you’ll need to think about what typefaces you’ll use in your design. Our print capabilities can handle whatever font you want to use, provided it fits on the slim side of a pencil. Some things to consider:

Style: Is your brand a serif or sans-serif? A hand-drawn script or a classic block letter? Serifs and sans-serifs are more traditional for conveying information, while a display font like a script, block letter, or calligraphy is more decorative and attention-grabbing.

Size: The max size for text on a pencil (depending on the size of pencil you choose) varies between 2 and 6 ½ inches in width and ⅞ to 1 ⅛ inches high. Keep in mind that the text on the side of a pencil is very small — if the fonts you choose have characters that are too close together or are too fine, they may not show clearly in your design.

Pairing: If you’re considering multiple lines of text (such as your business name plus a slogan), you might want to consider pairing more than one font together. It’s a good idea to look for contrast when pairing: serif and sans-serif, script plus sans-serif, all-caps plus lowercase.

Here are a few great resources for picking fonts:

If you’ve already browsed our custom pencil options, you’ll know that we offer a variety of colors and finishes for pencils. We do offer Pantone® matching for pencil finishes on orders with a minimum of 1,440 pencils, but our digital and screen printing capabilities allow us to match any printed design elements to your specifications, no matter the minimum. You’ll be able to pair your custom designs and colors with a background that makes sense for your brand.

Color Theory: Your brand is a personality, and the colors you choose to represent your brand help people interpret that personality. Colors can evoke certain feelings: Pink is commonly associated with femininity and innocence, yellow with happiness, blue with professionalism. How do you want people to feel when they look at your brand?

Complement: Start with the primary colors of your brand — particularly the color you chose for your logo. What colors go with it? How will it pop against the other colors in your design? Generally speaking, it’s safe to go with a color in the same family as your logo or one that’s opposite it on the color wheel (also known as its complementary color).

Contrast: Just like choosing the right font for your custom pencil will make it more legible, so will choosing the right color. White on white, for instance, might make a very minimalist look, but it will be very hard to read. Our advice is to start with the color you choose for the pencil’s background color and build your design on top of it to make sure the colors work well together.

Here are a couple of resources for picking brand colors:

Style Elements

Now that you’ve identified your brand look and feel, picked your fonts and colors, and considered your budget for pencils, the last bit of preparation is gathering your style elements. These include anything that’s not text: the version of your logo that you want to include and any stylistic elements, such as shapes or patterns, you want to use.

Should you consider hiring a graphic designer? Maybe! Your pencil design might be as simple as a couple lines of text, but maybe your brand has some extra visual elements that you’d like to work into a layout. If graphic design isn’t in your wheelhouse, a designer can help you lay out the elements you need into a format that works on a pencil. You can also try free tools like Canva that allow you to build templates and drag and drop elements into a design (which is far easier for newbies to navigate than Photoshop). Try your hand at pencil sketching.

Pencil drawing is an essential first step for many artists and designers, but it can also produce stunning art and designs.

Not sure which apps are best for you?

Take a minute. We'll help you figure it out.

Why start with pencil sketches?

The idea of preparatory sketches is a tale as old as art. While graphite pencils weren’t available for artists until the late 1800s, the idea of starting with a pencil sketch was already well established. “Pencil and paper let you get your ideas down super fast,” notes artist Tammi Heneveld. “You can do a brain dump until you find something that you really like.” Sketching a rough draft can help you develop creative concepts, tweak your composition, and experiment with shading. From there, it’s simple to transfer your pencil drawing into a digital space and take it to the next level.

An essential part of the creative process.

Pencil is a very versatile artistic medium. From quick caricatures in a sketchbook to polished landscape drawings, pencil has the potential to bring all kinds of creative ideas to life.

“I use a regular HB or No. 2 pencil to sketch things out roughly. Then I use a mechanical pencil to tighten up the details,” explains artist and illustrator Jung Hu Lee. With art supplies like gum erasers and blending stumps, you can create incredibly detailed, realistic, and imaginative drawings. “Blending can turn pencil into a whole other medium,” notes artist Violet Reed. “It’s fun to experiment with that.”

Don’t stop there. Once you’ve finished a pencil sketch, you can scan or digitize it. Turn your drawing into a polished logo design in Adobe Illustrator, or open your pencil sketch in  Adobe Fresco  and add onto it with custom brushes. With the pencil, pen, and watercolor brushes available, you can elevate your drawing from doodle to masterpiece — moving your sketch into the digital space allows you to edit and transform it in interesting ways.

Drawing techniques and tips for getting started.

Get started with strong, simple contour drawings. Examine the outlines of objects. “Focus more on the shapes that your eyes are seeing instead of on how you think it should look,” says Reed. With foreshortening and perspective, our brains can play tricks on us, so push yourself to draw what you actually see.

Line drawings are especially useful for quick sketches and  storyboarding , but a little shading can go a long way. Consider adding  hatching or cross-hatching to your drawing , and give value and tone to your designs with parallel and perpendicular lines. Another way to add shading to your sketches is blending. Sometimes blending digitally can be tricky, but  you can learn to blur and blend shapes in Illustrator .

Explore sketching tools and tutorials.

It’s always easier to start drawing when you have tutorials at your fingertips.

  • This  process video  on Behance shows an approach to pencil sketching from a digital perspective. It also provides a unique look at shading and adding tonal value.
  • See how  the mobile Adobe Sketch app  can help you create expressive drawings and sketches anywhere, while using natural drawing tools to get all the textures and blending effects you get on paper.
  • Not finding a brush you love?  Create your own custom brush  for digital pencil sketching.

Find your pencil inspiration.

When you have the tools and materials at your disposal, it’s time to find inspiration. Take a look at these pencil sketches and drawings from talented  artists on Behance.

  • See the detail and precision you can achieve through pencil with this  fantastical illustration  of the Louvre. This stylized poster shows the wide range of values a simple pencil effect can achieve.
  • These  realistic portrait sketches  show the possibilities of pencil as a medium.

Realistic pencil drawing of woman's face.

A pencil sketch is a great way to quickly get your ideas down on paper, physically or digitally. “Whether I’m doing basic layouts or tidying up details, it’s probably the most important step in my process,” notes Lee. If you’re planning a detailed digital portrait, an elaborate photo shoot, or a classic oil painting, pencil sketching can be great for rough drafts, storyboards, and preparatory drawings. And with these tools, tutorials, and tips, you’re ready to tackle your next sketch.

Beginner’s guide to graphite drawing pencils

beginners guide to graphite drawing pencils

In this guide, you will learn:

  • What the numbers and letters on a pencil mean
  • Which pencils you should use
  • Which pencils are best for drawing portraits and pencils for sketching
  • The reason why there are so many pencil grades
  • How the quality of a pencil can affect your artwork

Pencil Grades

pencil graphite value scale H to 9B RFA 4

The letters on a pencil will tell you its level of hardness or softness. For example:

H: Hard F: Fine Point HB: Hard Black B: Black

Hard pencils produce light lines while soft pencils produce dark lines. Why? Because soft pencils deposit more graphite onto your drawing surface. The softer the pencil, the smoother the graphite.

The number beside each letter represents the level of hardness or softness. So a 9B pencil is softer/darker than a 2B, while an 8H will be harder/lighter than a 3H.

Here’s a list of pencil grades in order from lightest to darkest or hardest to softest.

9H, 8H, 7H, 6H, 5H, 4H, 3H, 2H, H, F, HB, B, 2B, 3B, 4B, 5B, 6B, 7B, 8B, 9B

Value Range

Each pencil is capable of covering a wide range of values. If you look at the first image, there are some gradients under each square. This shows you how flexible each grade of pencil is. Even though 9B is the softest pencil, you can still use it to draw an entire portrait with values ranging from medium grey to black. Although, it would be a big challenge since it would require a lot of effort to keep from shading your drawing too dark.

The Best Pencils For Drawing

Don’t be intimidated by the number of pencils I listed up there! Most likely, you’ll only need to use 3-5 of them. The pencils you need will depend on the type of drawings you do.

Architectural / Product Sketches / Technical Sketches

If you’re into drawing buildings, cars or technical sketches, a set of hard pencils will suit you well. Hard pencils don’t smudge easily, so your drawings will always be sharp and clean. You won’t need to sharpen your pencils too often because the graphite is hard enough to hold a sharp tip longer than any B graded pencil.

If you want to add dark shading to your drawing, pick up a few soft pencils so you can make your drawings pop out of the page.

Portraiture /  Animals / Realism

guide to graphite pencils

Why You Should Use More Than 1 Pencil

Each pencil has its benefits and can help you get the job done faster! I could use a monkey wrench to drive 1000 nails into my patio deck, but it wasn’t designed for that job. A hammer is so much more efficient!

Here’s how each pencil below helps me get the job done faster and more efficiently:

HB: This pencil helps me shade the lightest areas of my portrait such as eyeballs and highlights without having to spend too much time focusing on the amount of pressure I’m putting on the paper and worrying if I’m shading to dark.

6B: Without any effort at all, I can easily shade large areas of a portrait or background with a smooth dark layer of graphite.

If you feel really strained after you finish a drawing, you might need to add a few more pencil grades to your toolbox, or learn how to use them more efficiently.

Graphite Quality

Graphite pencils are typically mixed with varying amounts of clay. Which means that a low quality pencil could contain many sand-like bits that feel scratchy and can damage your artwork.

If you can’t test a pencil before buying it and you want to be sure it won’t be scratchy, check to see that the packaging says it’s mixed with high quality, pure or smooth clay. Keep in mind that no matter how high the quality, you’re not going to get a 100% pure pencil.

I think there’s a challenge here in using only 1 pencil to create a portrait sketch. I’m only really starting now but I think you could get away with only just using one of the middle range pencils like just an HB or an H. I can the difficulties with each – an H pencil would have difficulty in achieving the really dark blacks for deep shading and the HB might have a rough time at getting some really light shading but with both you couldn’t get really dark so a sketch of a portrait might just be a soft pop and not a WOW pop. But to get those darks with a lighter H pencil you really gotta press and that will cramp up your hand but even then the shade might not be there.

I am self-taught, or should I say self-learning cuz I do have a long way to go. I have been drawing architectural/engineering plan & perspective drawings for many years. In those types of drawings, we use “pen weights” (the thickness of the tip of the pen) to draw bolder lines to minimize the need of multiple pen strokes. In nutshell, a 9B pencil will produce a bolder, thicker line than a 9H would. I know Derwent makes wood encased charcoal pencils rated as: light, medium & dark. Why . . . when . . . should . . . you use a light charcoal pencil vs a 9B pencil? Then there’s the EBONY pencil . . . why use the EBONY vs 9B vs dark charcoal? Derwent even makes an ONYX pencil. When and why would you use the onyx. So I guess my question(s) is: Graphite vs Carbon vs Charcoal vs Onyx vs Wash pencils? I would like to know the differences and their application? Can you please help

Yes, it is true to say that you will be given the task of writing assignments. They can be as short as one page or as long as a full-length proposal or report. Well, we all know very well that writing an assignment demands good writing skills and the potential to deal with the hefty, time-consuming task. Assignment-making does not come alone with the writing; it comes with the basic knowledge of formatting and designing.

Your assignment should be in the appropriate format. It should be error-free and grammatically correct. Facts and figures should be mentioned with high accuracy. The same applies to the design of the assignment.

If you have written an assignment with a great expression that will leave your boss amazed or make your teacher or instructor happier than ever, is it still going to work?

Another important part of your assignment is cultivating designs. A good design can compensate for little errors and beat slight lapses in your assignment. A good design requires some mindful care and consideration of the field in which the assignment is being written.

The design has more importance when it comes to the cover page of the assignment. Design is important on the cover page because it automatically exposes the reader to your assignment.

In academia, students submit their assignments to their teachers to grade their exams. Some would submit voluntary assignments to get attention for their work or to get an opportunity for further work. In these cases, the cover pages of the assignment would play pivotal roles.

Assignments with good cover pages are eye-catching and look more professional. Assignment cover pages should not be designed casually; however, if your assignment has professional restrictions, then stick to the format pattern you are already following in your organization.

Assignment Cover Pages in Professional Management

In professional management, cover pages are not designed by external means. However, some choose different software to design the cover page minimally, but not much can be done on a professional level.

Professional assignments have restrictions on following the set format of the organization. Therefore, if you play with the format, your image can look lousy in front of your boss.

Assignment Cover Pages in Pencil for Academic Assignments

In academia, especially in lower grades, teachers can ask for assignments. These assignments are required to evaluate your writing skills and gauge your interest in the field of study. Hence, you must design the cover page of the assignment to give it a better and more attractive look.

You can use a digital pencil or a soft pen to design your assignment cover page. Designing is easy with a digital pencil; therefore, we recommend you use a digital pen while designing the cover page.

The design should not be very flowery or too vibrant for your assignment. It should look nice, attractive, and noticeable, but professional too.

We have templates of assignment cover pages that are designed with pencils and can be customized to be used for your assignment. You can also get your personalized design for the assignment cover page from our expert designers, who design the cover page considering your field of interest and level of education.

WGS 84 coordinate reference system is the latest revision of the World Geodetic System, which is used in mapping and navigation, including GPS satellite navigation system (the Global Positioning System).

Geographic coordinates (latitude and longitude) define a position on the Earth’s surface. Coordinates are angular units. The canonical form of latitude and longitude representation uses degrees (°), minutes (′), and seconds (″). GPS systems widely use coordinates in degrees and decimal minutes, or in decimal degrees.

Latitude varies from −90° to 90°. The latitude of the Equator is 0°; the latitude of the South Pole is −90°; the latitude of the North Pole is 90°. Positive latitude values correspond to the geographic locations north of the Equator (abbrev. N). Negative latitude values correspond to the geographic locations south of the Equator (abbrev. S).

Longitude is counted from the prime meridian ( IERS Reference Meridian for WGS 84) and varies from −180° to 180°. Positive longitude values correspond to the geographic locations east of the prime meridian (abbrev. E). Negative longitude values correspond to the geographic locations west of the prime meridian (abbrev. W).

UTM or Universal Transverse Mercator coordinate system divides the Earth’s surface into 60 longitudinal zones. The coordinates of a location within each zone are defined as a planar coordinate pair related to the intersection of the equator and the zone’s central meridian, and measured in meters.

Elevation above sea level is a measure of a geographic location’s height. We are using the global digital elevation model GTOPO30 .
