The Village Review: Arya's badly-made horror thriller needs proper script, budget

'The Village', which marks Arya's OTT debut, is a series adapted from a graphic novel of the same name. The horror thriller is about a ghost village and its haunting past. With its teaser and trailer, 'The Village', helmed by Milind Rau, piqued the interest of the audience. It hinted at the the series being a social commentary on nature conservation and superstitions. And the director promised a lot of gore as well. Did 'The Village' manage to fulfil the expectations? Let's find out!

Gautham (Arya), a doctor by profession, is married to Neha (Divya Pillai). They have a daughter named Maya (Baby Aazhiya) and a beagle named Hectic! During a road trip from Chennai to Thoothukudi, their car breaks down in a haunted village called Kattiyal. Meanwhile, there's Prakash (Arjun Chidambaram) who sends a mercenary group headed by Farhan (John Kokken) to get samples.

If you've seen a fair share of Tamil films, you might have predicted the storyline. And if you did, that's precisely how 'The Village' unfolds. The web series redundantly explores how industry and medical waste affect the lifestyle of a particular demography. You throw in all the clichéd scenes you could ever think of, you'd have it in the show. Coupled with poor screenplay and uninspiring dialogues, 'The Village' becomes a tedious watch.

When director Milind Rau shows us the forest of Kattiyal where Farhan and his team were asked to extract substances, you let out a chuckle. Because the forest looks like how 'Avatar' would look like if it was made on a shoestring budget. The trees are painted in neon colours! As promised, 'The Village' has a lot of gore. We get slashed intestines, bodies cut into halves, intestines laying on the floor, gory-looking men and what not. But, you do not feel scared or frown in disgust. After a point, they look more like cartoon characters.

The mercenary group led by Farhan is not that effective either. His team of cold-faced individuals doesn't inspire much hope. Similarly, the flashback options touch upon the topics of oppression, discrimination, corporates taking over villages and health hazards. These are all topics that were shown in countless Tamil films and it looks like there was no effort taken to add new ideas to the done-to-death story.

In terms of performance, Arya appears out of place in the series, particularly struggling with emotional scenes. It is the performances of Aadukalam Naren and Muthukumar, who played the roles of Shakthivel and Karunagam, which hold the show together. Arjun Chidambaram as a spoilt brat and a cunning businessman, delivers a decent performance.

The story of 'The Village' feels outdated and redundant. Throughout the six episodes, each spanning 35-45 minutes, there's never an urge to binge-watch it. The second half of the story is excessively long and lacks substance, despite its good intentions. If Milind Rau had focused more on the screenplay, 'The Village' might have become a worthwhile horror thriller.

Teaser of Arya's 'Kathar Basha Endra Muthuramalingam' out 

The teaser of  Kathar Basha Endra Muthuramalingam , the upcoming Tamil film starring actor Arya in the lead role, was released by the makers on social media on Friday

The teaser begins with the heroic and hyper-masculine introduction for Arya, who is known for his violent ways to deal with obstacles. It is followed by heavy stunt sequences surrounding Arya as well as throwing glimpses of other characters.

Written and directed by Muthaiya, the film is backed by Drumsticks Productions in association with Zee Studios.  Kathar Basha Endra Muthuramalingam  marks Arya's first collaboration with Muthaiya, who last directed  Viruman .

The film features actor Siddhi Idnani as the female lead, and Prabu, Bhagyaraj, Singampuli, Naren among others.

Kathar Basha Endra Muthuramalingam  has music composed by GV Prakash Kumar, with Velraj handling the cinematography. Venkat Raajen, who previously worked with Muthaiya in  Viruman , will also be editing this film.

The Village Trailer: Prime Video gives a spine-chilling glimpse of the Arya starrer Tamil Original horror series

The Village is set to premiere on Prime Video in India and across 240 countries and territories worldwide on November 24.

On November 17, Prime Video unveiled the much-awaited trailer of its upcoming new-age horror Original series – The Village. A Studio Shakthi production, the series is produced by B. S. Radhakrishnan and written and created by Milind Rau, with co-writers Deeraj Vaidy, and Deepthi Govindarajan. The series stars popular Tamil actor Arya in the lead, alongside a versatile ensemble cast featuring Divya Pillai, Aazhiya, Aadukalam Naren, George Mayan, PN Sunny, Muthukumar K., Kalairaani S.S., John Kokken, Pooja, V Jayaprakash, Arjun Chidambaram, and Thalaivasal Vijay. The series is set to premiere exclusively on Prime Video in India and across more than 240 countries and territories worldwide on November 24 in Tamil, dubbed in Telugu, Malayalam, Kannada, and Hindi, with subtitles in English.

Inspired by Asvin Srivatsangam, Vivek Rangachari, and Shamik Dasgupta’s graphic horror novel of the same name, initially published by Yali Dream Works, the series is a fast-paced, action-packed story that takes the viewers deep into the desolate hinterlands of Tamil Nadu and into the village of Kattiyal, where Gautham and his family encounter a living form of horror they never imagined in their worst nightmare. The recently released trailer of the series introduces viewers to a family of three, eager to set out on a road trip. However, the excitement soon turns dangerous as a shocking montage introduces a terrifying village infested by dreadful mutants, where death seems unpredictable.

Gautham, played by Arya, joins forces with three locals to rescue his wife and daughter, who have been taken captive by these mutants. The trailer then veers into a nerve-chilling direction as a group of mercenaries are seen in the village, retrieving something long forgotten. Pulsing with an atmosphere of dread and trepidation, the story takes viewers on a spine-chilling ride through an eerie forest, petrifying tunnels, and an abandoned village.  Will Gautham save his family and escape the nightmarish village alive?  The trailer is expected to feature adrenaline-rushing, goose-bump inducing scenes which aims at leaving the viewers biting their nails in fright.

Arya’s movies at a glance

Born Jamshad Cethirakath in Kerala, Arya made a promising start in Tamil cinema with his Filmfare-winning debut in 2005, Vishnuvardhan’s Arindhum Ariyamalum . The complex crime drama starred Arya in a supporting role as a dreaded gangster’s hot-headed adopted son. Sharing screen space with an already-experienced thespian like Prakash Raj as his father figure, Arya’s debut opened up avenues to play more rogue supporting characters.

A quick example in succession was the 2006 crime thriller Pattiyal that explored the world of underworld dons and contract killers, with Arya playing one such morally-conflicted assassin.

Arya drew further critical acclaim in 2009’s Naan Kadavul . The drama followed him as a man estranged from his family to the point of becoming an unorthodox ascetic. But when he reunites with his brethren, fitting into society becomes a Herculean task with Arya effortlessly capturing the social transformation of his protagonist.

But it was only from the 2010s onwards that Arya began to prove his commercial prowess with hits like the colonial-era period romance Madrasapattinam (2010), the comedy film Boss Engira Baskaran (2010), family action film Vettai (2012) and Atlee's family film Raja Rani (2013). The latter was, in fact, substantial in exploring Arya’s comic timing as he and Nayanthara aced the portrayal of a mismatched couple brought together by personal tragedy.

His funny side was touched upon again in the dark crime caper Settai , the Tamil remake of Hindi cult favourite Delhi Belly (2013). In the same year, he reunited with Arunthum Ariyamalum filmmaker Vishnuvardhan for the action thriller Arrambam and starred as a mathematician and fantasy world hero in the surreal romance Irandam Ulagam .

Hits followed in the years to come albeit with mixed reviews from the critics’ front. But a watershed moment in Arya’s career was marked after the pandemic, with Arya fronting Prime Video’s 2021 release Sarpatta Parambarai. Helmed by Pa Ranjith, the ‘80s-set boxing drama found Arya displaying impeccable boxer physique and channeling a morally gray brand of heroism. Post-Sarpatta, Arya continued improving his credentials as an action hero with offerings like the Predator-like military-vs-alien adventure Captain and the social gangster drama Kathar Basha Endra Muthuramalingam.

Boss Engira Baskaran

Bhaskaran is a happy-go-lucky guy, who is yet to complete his B.A. degree, writing arrear examinations annually for years. His only friend is Nallathambi who owns a barber saloon, which he received as a dowry for marrying a two-month pregnant woman. He lives with his mother, Sivakami, brother Saravanan who is a successful veterinarian and sister, Nithya. When his brother marries Nandhini, he gets to meet Nandhini's younger sister Chandrika and wishes to marry her. When he approaches his family for a chance, everyone talks very frankly of his unemployed status which rankles him and he leaves his house to prove himself. With the support of Nallathambi, he establishes a tutorial for Class 10 students and despite early setbacks makes it work, while also convincing Chandrika, who eventually reciprocates his love. However despite all this, Chandrika's father is against her marriage with Bhaskaran for a reason which is revealed in the end.

Arinthum Ariyamalum

A college student files a police complaint against the adopted son of a gangster for shooting his girlfriend. However, the gangster is shocked to learn that the student is his real son.

Two contract killers, who wish to leave the crime world, are betrayed by their boss.

Ullam Ketkumae

A friendship between college friends Shyam, Priya and Pooja suffers when Shyam confesses his love for Priya, leaving Pooja, who also loves him, heartbroken.

Kelu is a warrior in 16th century Kerala whose father was killed by Vasco da Gama and his troops. Kelu vows to avenge his father's death with the assistance of Vavvali and Ayesha, a warrior princess.

Aarya 3 review: Sushmita Sen rises to the occasion in rousing finale to a deeply unsettling conclusion

Aarya 3 review: Creator Ram Madhvani revealed right in the opening shot of the Season 3 trailer of his family crime drama Aarya that Sushmita Sen's titular character gets shot. The rest of the season unfolds in flashback, but the investigation isn't so much about why she gets shot, how she gets there, whether she survives, or who pulls the trigger. While all these questions and discoveries leave great scope for thrill, it's the larger, overarching question that Ram is most interested in: Does Aarya get closure?

Closing all loops

Family crime drama is a genre that keeps giving. From Francis Ford Coppola's iconic Godfather trilogy to Sandeep Reddy Vanga's recent Bollywood blockbuster Animal, there's so much to swallow, chew, wash down, and digest. From the relentless thrills of its screenplay to the underlying commentary about how a generation's choices inform the next one's and how the kids end up becoming exactly what they despised of in their birth-givers – a family crime drama makes for an endlessly sumptuous feast.

Aarya gets all the beats of this genre right only because Ram and his co-directors Kapil Sharma and Shraddha Pasi Jairath are able to consistently strike the perfect balance of thrill and drama. Unlike the recent Prime Video India Original show Indian Police Force , one can't make out which scene is directed by Rohit Shetty and which ones are helmed by his lesser co-director Sushwant Prakash. The thread through all seasons of Aarya is laced with its ideology – and that's what lends the show a riveting personality of its own.

This doesn't imply that Aarya remains static. Like its protagonist, the show has also evolved from its first instalment in 2020 to its last in 2024. Sushmita Sen's Aarya Sareen has remained a fiercely protective mother and a woman with gifted self-preservation skills, but one can see tangible growth from the relatively hapless widow of Season 1 to the indefatigable force of nature in Season 3.2. In fact, Aarya really comes a full circle in the first and last seasons, where she's sceptical about the world of crime as opposed to in Season 2 and 3, where she's in the eye of the storm, and to an extent, even owning it.

It's difficult to forget the scene in Season 1 when an inconsolable Sushmita bites into the shadi ka laddoo after her husband's murder. Season 3 starts with her enjoying a cigar by her swimming pool, yet Antim Vaar never catches her smoking; she's mostly sipping onto wine after the day's business at night, reflecting on the life that's been, instead of planning the next big deal. Sushmita Sen lends so much ease to this extremely demanding and challenging arc. She's as much at peace when she breaks down on the floor as she's bloodying a sword. Sushmita preserves every bit of her through the show, only to unleash her inner Durga in the rousing finale.

Unsettling season, rousing finale

The said finale is the perfect shot in the arm (no pun intended) for a deeply unsettling season. While most of Aarya was steeped in a doomed sauce of foreboding or carrying the baggage of a life-altering tragedy, the concluding season damages you in a new vein. Neither Aarya's abiding do-gooder streak nor her conniving, resourceful ways can get her through the web of defeat life has got herself into. There's a constant sinking feeling, of an anchor weighing down your throat, that you fight – as if nothing is going to be the same again. It changes only in the last episode when Aarya comes into her own, reconciles to her fate, and lets loose like a beast with nothing to lose.

Concluding a family crime drama is a slippery slope because each generation keeps avenging the other. For instance, when Veer's girlfriend Roop dies at the end of Season 3.1, we see him spreading her ashes to the tune of Bade Ache Lagte Hain, the same song that Aarya remembers her husband by. When Veer disowns Aarya, her mother tells her that children can't remain hurt by their mother – and moments later, we see Aarya hugging her mother, a woman she was hurt by. The karma comes calling for not only Aarya, but also Khan when he loses a close associate and realises – in his blind quest to catch Aarya red-handed, he has lost irretrievably. Daulat ( Sikandar Kher ), who shot their father, ends up saving Aarya's children. * spoiler alert * And finally, Aarya, whose husband was killed by her gangster-father's right-hand man, ends up getting shot by her own * spoiler alert ends* .

There do remain some sour points though – Geetanjali Kulkarni's character of Sushila, who one expected to unravel in unexpected ways, is given a short shrift this season as well, wasting a terrific actor in the process. Ila Arun did a lot of talking and posturing in the previous instalment, but her menacing personality loses its sheen when her ways get repetitive, her son gets more annoying, and her English accent more awkward. Sushmita repeating her oath, “Maine jo bhi kiya, apne bachchon ke liye kiya” gets exhausting, before Daulat asks her to do, instead of say. Snapping out of the verbal loop does help in escaping the narrative circles as well.

When you finally see Sushmita scream her lungs out and strike like a goddess, you feel that carnal instinct in your bones. You stop fretting over the fate of her family, worrying if it's really the last of arguably India's best show so far, and praying that the prospective prey in all of us doesn't meet a tragic end. Like Aarya, you know the end is near, but are ready to embrace it because you got the closure you needed.

Arya's new film with Viruman director - TITLE ANNOUNCED! Vendhu Thanindhathu Kaadu sensation on board!

Leading Tamil actor-producer Arya 's next film will be with director Muthaiya of Komban and Viruman fame and is titled Kathar Basha Endra Muthuramalingam . Blockbuster filmmaker Gautham Vasudev Menon revealed the upcoming film's title, while also sharing the first look poster, which has Arya seated on a chair and dressed in black, with a wall drawing of 'Superstar' Rajinikanth from Baasha in the background. The Kathar Basha Endra Muthuramalingam title announcement and the first look have been unveiled today a day before Arya's birthday, which falls on Sunday, December 11, and gives us a glimpse into the actor's role and character in the film, which was launched back in October. 

Kathar Basha Endra Muthuramalingam marks the first time Arya is collaborating with Muthaiya, who is fresh off the blockbuster success of his Viruman , which had Karthi and Aditi Shankar in the lead roles. Initially titled Arya 34 , the film is touted to be a rural mass action entertainer along the lines of the director's previous commercial potboilers, which were received well by family audiences and it will be interesting to see what he has in store for fans next. Likewise, Arya, who has delivered a knockout performance with Sarpatta Parambarai , will be looking to come out all guns blazing with Kathar Basha Endra Muthuramalingam after his Captain didn't perform as well as he would have hoped for.

Kathar Basha Endra Muthuramalingam will see Arya paired with Siddhi Idnani, who became a youth sensation after her performance in Silambarasan TR's Vendhu Thanindhathu Kaadu , while G. V. Prakash Kumar is composing the music after he earlier this year won the National Award for Best Background Score in Suriya's Soorarai Pottru . The film is being produced by Zee Studios in association with Drumsticks Productions, the banner that bankrolled Arun Vijay's Yaanai , with the technical team featuring the likes of Velraj handling the cinematography, Venkat Raajen taking care of the editing, followed by Veeramani Ganesan for the art direction, while Anl Arasu is heading the stunt choreography.

Tamil actor arya's new film announced by zee studios.

Kollywood actor Arya, who was recently seen in 'Captain', is known for delivering a knockout performance in the OTT release 'Sarpatta Parambarai' (the Tamil movie directed by Pa.Ranjith of 'Kabali' fame).

The news is that Zee Studios and Drumsticks Productions have joined hands to produce a movie with him as the hero. Siddhi Idnani, who was recently seen opposite Simbu in Gautham Menon's 'Life Of Muthu', is its heroine.

Tamil director Muthaiya, who is known for family entertainers, is wielding the megaphone. "The director understands the pulse of the audience extremely well," the makers said, making the project announcement. The banners added that their vision is very much in alignment.

With music by GV Prakash Kumar and cinematography by Velraj, the film has art by Veeramani.
