Hot summer days can be tiresome and exhausting due to the scorching heat and the dehydration it causes but it's also during this time that students amd their families get to enjoy their summer vacations without having to worry about school work or bed time. A hot summer day can be turned around with a couple of cold beverages, good food and great company. Here are a few sample essays on ‘A Hot Summer Day’.

When summer first arrives, mornings are pleasant and more refreshing, but as the day goes on, the heat of the sun increases until it is felt throughout the entire day. The severity of the weather is also felt by trees and plants, since their leaves appear dull and their flowers fade swiftly. As the day progresses, the temperature rises, making this the most difficult part of the day—especially for those who perform field work. People prefer to stay inside their homes throughout the day, leaving the streets, markets, and other places looking vacant. Both animals and people living outside seek cover under trees and big buildings on a hot day.

Even though summer is the hottest season of the year, it can also be the most interesting and fun since it gives children some time off school and they can go swimming and pursue hobby classes. It is also a time when they can relish some of their favourite foods like ice creams and mangoes, go swimming, eat ice cream and their favourite fruits, etc. People also escape to hill stations for much-needed breaks from the scorching heat of the sun and return only after the weather improves.

Children usually find summers to be pleasant despite the heat as they enjoy their summer vacation from school and get more time to play outside with their friends without having to worry about homework or waking up early. People enjoy swimming, eating summertime fruits, and sipping cold beverages on hot summer days. Children often enjoy a hot summer day with seasonal fruits like mangoes, kiwis, and pineapple. Not only do these foods cool the body, but they also lift up one's mood. Ice cream and cold drinks are also very popular on a hot summer day. As night falls, people come out to enjoy themselves in lush green parks, gardens and shopping centres.

Summer is the hottest season of the year, with longer, warmer days and shorter nights. Many people prefer to stay indoors during the day during summers because of the scorching heat, and like to be active in the early morning or in the late afternoon after the sun has set. People usually use light cotton clothing in hot weather to minimise the heat effect and stay cool. In order to prevent dehydration and sun stroke, we should drink more water and eat more fruits. This is also the time when schools are closed and children can take summer vacations to visit other places such as hill stations and beaches.

Protecting ourselves from extreme heat

Hot weather can cause dehydration, heat exhaustion, and, in extreme situations, heat stroke. Globally, hot days are becoming hotter and more frequent, whereas cold days are becoming less frequent. Drought can be made worse by heat, and wildfires can be sparked by hot, dry weather. High daytime temperatures are detrimental to plant growth, and certain crops need cool nights. Extremely hot days can be managed by:-

developing heat-preparedness strategies, which may include actions like opening cooling facilities during times of extreme heat and establishing workplace heat stress regulations

putting up cool, green roofs and cool pavement can also lessen the impact of the urban heat island

planting more trees to create shade and evapotranspiration to cool the air

Keep your living area cool. When it is dark and the temperature outside has dropped, open the windows that were closed throughout the day.

Eat and drink cold things, stay away from hot and alcoholic beverages, and take a chilly shower or splash cool water on your skin or clothing.

Even if you don't feel thirsty, make sure to drink lots of water.

During this season, many people often face sweating and dehydration as well and that is when surprise rains are sometimes a good relief from a hot summer day.

How i spent a Hot Summer Day?

I remember spending one such hot summer day with my family during summer holidays. The sun was at its highest point and the heat was almost unbearable. My family and I decided to make a plan to escape the scorching heat and uplift everyone’s mood—we made plans to go swimming late in the evening and then go for a movie after dinner. The thought of cold water and an air-conditioned theatre excited everyone. We reached the community pool around 5pm and everyone dived in after changing into their bathing suits. We got swimming tubes and balls to play around with. We divided ourselves into two teams and played marco polo.

It was amazing to see everyone relax and have a wonderful time. We then went to watch an action movie at the theatre. Everyone purchased cool beverages and popcorn. My cousin and I even felt a bit chilly due to the air conditioning—everyone else had a good laugh over it. Even though the weather was not in our favour, we managed to turn our day around and made it into one of the memorable days that I will always cherish.

‘This summer season, I visited my maternal grandmother’s house. In Hindi, me and my sister call her ‘nani’ —every summer season we pay our visit to her and enjoy the natural beauty of the village. I rushed in to sit again in front of the dessert cooler. I had even to cancel my morning walk. I took a few glasses of chilly Water to somehow appease my unquenchable thirst.

I had a bath in water in which I had to dissolve some ice cubes to make it cool. Even after bathing in cool water, my body felt no relief as it again heated up quickly in the sizzling atmosphere.

I took cold milk with my breakfast. As I went to school, I felt very upset because of the heat. I found all my friends, and indeed, whomever I met complaining of the heat.

The sun was so hot and full of glare that one who had to go in the sun, felt like going to kiss the gallows.

All-day, I found people taking chilled water soft drinks, ice-creams, cold fruit juices, cold milk, and lassi.

Many people, lost all their appetite because of intense heat. I wondered how the workers worked in fields, factories and on roads, and in markets.

Everybody was sweating profusely. The clothes of everybody were giving out foul smell.

As ordered by the authorities, our school like all other schools was closed at 1 p.m. instead of 3 p.m. which was the usual closing time.

A Summary and Analysis of Shakespeare’s Sonnet 18

‘Shall I compare thee to a summer’s day?’ is one of the most famous opening lines in all of literature. In this post, we’re going to look beyond that opening line, and the poem’s reputation, and attempt a short summary and analysis of Sonnet 18 in terms of its language, meaning, and themes. The poem represents a bold and decisive step forward in the sequence of Sonnets as we read them.

For the first time, the key to the Fair Youth’s immortality lies not in procreation (as it had been in the previous 17 sonnets) but in Shakespeare’s own verse. But what is William Shakespeare’s Sonnet 18 actually saying? And did the poet have personal experience of the young man to whom the sonnet is addressed, or is the poem a mere product of the imagination, a fine conceit?

Most of the poems we write about here on Interesting Literature involve introducing the unfamiliar: we take a poem that we think has something curious and little-known about it, and try to highlight that feature, or interpretation.

But with ‘Shall I compare thee to a summer’s day?’ we have almost the opposite problem: we’re trying to take a very well-known poem and de -familiarise it, and try to see it as though we’re coming across it for the first time. This is by no means an easy task, so we’ll begin with a summary.

Sonnet 18: summary

First, then, that summary of Sonnet 18, beginning with that opening question, which sounds almost like a dare or a challenge, nonchalantly offered up: ‘Shall I compare thee to a summer’s day?’

Shall I compare thee to a summer’s day? Thou art more lovely and more temperate: Rough winds do shake the darling buds of May, And summer’s lease hath all too short a date:

Shakespeare asks the addressee of the sonnet – who is probably the same young man, or ‘Fair Youth’, to whom the other early sonnets are also addressed – whether he should compare him to a summery day. He goes on to remark that the young man is lovelier, and more gentle and dependably constant.

After all, in May (which, in Shakespeare’s time, was considered a bona fide part of summer ) rough winds often shake the beloved flowers of the season (thus proving the Bard’s point that summer is less ‘temperate’ than the young man).

What’s more, summer is over all too quickly: its ‘lease’ – a legal term – soon runs out. We all know this to be true, when September rolls round, the nights start drawing in, and we get that sinking ‘back to school’ feeling.

Sometime too hot the eye of heaven shines, And often is his gold complexion dimmed, And every fair from fair sometime declines, By chance, or nature’s changing course untrimmed:

In lines 5-8, Shakespeare continues his analysis of the ways in which the young man is better than a summer’s day: sometimes the sun (‘the eye of heaven’) shines too brightly (i.e. the weather is just too hot, unbearably so), and, conversely, sometimes the sun is ‘dimmed’ or hidden by clouds.

And every lovely or beautiful thing (‘fair’ here in ‘every fair’ is used as a noun, i.e. ‘every fair thing’), even the summer, sometimes drops a little below its best, either randomly or through the march of nature (which changes and in time ages every living thing).

But thy eternal summer shall not fade, Nor lose possession of that fair thou ow’st, Nor shall death brag thou wander’st in his shade, When in eternal lines to time thou grow’st

In lines 9-12, Shakespeare continues the ‘Youth vs. summer’ motif, arguing that the young man’s ‘eternal summer’, or prime, will not fade; nor will the Youth’s ‘eternal summer’ lose its hold on the beauty the young man owns (‘ow’st’).

Nor will Death, the Grim Reaper, be able to boast that the young man walks in the shadow of death, not when the youth grows, not towards death (like a growing or lengthening shadow) but towards immortality, thanks to the ‘eternal lines’ of Shakespeare’s verse which will guarantee that he will live forever.

So long as men can breathe, or eyes can see, So long lives this, and this gives life to thee.

In his concluding couplet, Shakespeare states that as long as the human race continues to exist, and read poetry, Shakespeare’s poem (‘this’) survives, and continues to ‘give life’ to the young man through keeping his memory alive.

Sonnet 18: analysis

Sonnet 18 is a curious poem to analyse when it’s set in the context of the previous sonnets. It’s the first poem that doesn’t exhort the Fair Youth to marry and have children: we’ve left the ‘Procreation Sonnets’ behind.

In the last few sonnets, Shakespeare has begun to introduce the idea that his poetry might provide an alternative ‘immortality’ for the young man, though in those earlier sonnets Shakespeare’s verse has been deemed an inferior way of securing the young man’s immortality when placed next to the idea of leaving offspring.

In Sonnet 18, right from the confident strut of ‘Shall I compare thee to a summer’s day?’ onwards, Shakespeare is sure that his poetry will guarantee the young man his immortality after all.

There is an easy music to the poem, set up by that opening line: look at repetition of ‘summer’ and ‘some’, which strikes us as natural and not contrived, unlike some of the effects Shakespeare had created in the earlier sonnets: ‘summer’s day’, ‘summer’s lease’, ‘Sometime too hot’, ‘sometime declines’, ‘eternal summer’.

This reinforces the inferiority of the summer with its changeability but also its brevity (‘sometime’ in Shakespeare’s time meant not only ‘sometimes’, suggesting variability and inconstancy, but also ‘once’ or ‘formerly’, suggesting something that is over).

In terms of imagery, the reference to Death bragging ‘thou wander’st in his shade’, as well as calling up the words from the 23rd Psalm (‘Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death’), also fits neatly into the poem’s broader use of summer/sun imagery.

‘When in eternal lines to time thou grow’st’: it’s worth observing the suggestion of self-referentiality here, with ‘lines’ summoning the lines of Shakespeare’s verse. In such an analysis, then, ‘eternal lines’ prefigure Shakespeare’s own immortal lines of poetry, designed to give immortality to the poem’s addressee, the Fair Youth.

This is significant, following Booth, if we wish to analysis Sonnet 18 (or ‘Shall I compare thee to a summer’s day?’ if you’d prefer) in the context of the preceding sonnets, which had been concerned with procreation.

We cannot be sure who arranged the sonnets into the order in which they were printed in 1609 (in the first full printing of the poems, featuring that enigmatic dedication to ‘Mr W. H. ’), but it is suggestive that Sonnet 18, in which Shakespeare proudly announces his intention of immortalising the Fair Youth with his pen, follows a series of sonnets in which Shakespeare’s pen had urged the Fair Youth to marry and sire offspring as his one chance of immortality.

Now, through the power of his poetry, William Shakespeare the writer is offering the young man another way of becoming immortal.

Sonnet 18 has undoubtedly become a favourite love poem in the language because its message and meaning are relatively easy to decipher and analyse.

Its opening line has perhaps eclipsed the rest of the poem to the degree that we have lost sight of the precise argument Shakespeare is making in seeking to compare the Youth to a summer’s day, as well as the broader context of the rest of the Sonnets and the implications this has for our interpretation of Sonnet 18.

The poem reveals a new confidence in Shakespeare’s approach to the Sonnets, and in the ensuing sonnets he will take this even further.

The only source of comfort is the cold water which keeps us going. People consume a lot of water all through the day and night. The fans, coolers, air conditioners and fridges work round the clock. The electricity is consumed at its peak. The big cities suffer from power cuts and people come on the roads, they protest but ultimately they reconcile with the situation. There is a scarcity of all the essential supplies due to heat. The vegetable prices go sky-high. The schools declare holidays as they cannot make proper arrangements for the students. The rich escape the heat of the plains and take refuge in the hill stations. They pay for the expensive stays there.

The condition of poor labourers is pitiable. They have to work on roads and building constructions in the open Sun. The affluent people enjoy their posh houses and cars, offices and farmhouses. It is again the poor who suffer the wrath of nature. The trouble ends only when there is a bounty of nature in the form of a shower of rain. People pray for this bounty of nature, day in and out and ultimately the clock of time turns round and it is the end of summer.

In countries like India, the summer season is the most uncomfortable season. Extremely hot weather affects in slowing down of activity. The blowing of the loo causes much discomfort and, sometimes, even leads to death. Frequent breakdown of electricity adds much to the problem. In order to counter the effect of extremely hot days, an air-conditioned atmosphere is provided in offices and business centres. During extremely hot days, the loss of appetite is a common phenomenon. People heave a sigh of relief when, during an extremely hot day, there are clouds or a shower.

Summer is very hot in India. June is the hottest month of the year. The heat of the sun becomes unbearable. People perspire from head to foot. Cold drinks are in great demand. Baths give little relief. Not only men but even animals and birds feel restless in the intense heat of the sun.

It was the day of 20th June. The sun was extremely hot. I was wet to the bone with sweat. A hot wind was blowing outside. Not a leaf was stirring. The birds were sitting quietly. They were feeling thirsty. Their beaks were wide open. Dogs were sitting in drains of dirty water. They were lolling their tongues. The roads looked deserted.

The afternoon was the hottest part of the day. Nobody liked to go out in the sun. The shopkeepers had pulled down their shutters. They were taking a rest under the fans. A boy or two were carrying umbrellas over their heads. The rickshaw pullers were perspiring while plying rickshaws. Parents were waiting for their children from school. The labourers had left their work. They were sitting in a shady corner.

The people prayed to God for rain. God answered their prayers. Meanwhile, clouds started gathering in the sky. A cool wind began to blow. Soon it began to rain. There was water everywhere. People came out of their houses. Children began playing in rainwater. The birds started chirping. The weather became pleasant. People heaved a sigh of relief. There was a mood of fun and gaiety.

In the hot weather in India, wise people get up before dawn; for when the sun has once risen, good-bye to any hope of coolness until early the next morning. It is still dark when one leaves one’s bed on the top of the house or in the garden (for sleeping inside the house at night is impossible), has a nice cold bath, and dresses. Now for the only pleasant walk in the day! There is just a faint light in the eastern sky, and the stars are beginning to pale. A cool breeze blows, and the birds are waking. The crows caw noisily in the trees, a flock of screaming parrots flies overhead, doves are cooing, and the brain-fevered bird is trying to reach its top note. The grass is cool and dewy, the shadowy trees are rustling their leaves, and the air is full of scent.

The grey light in the east grows rapidly brighter, turns to red and then to gold, and then a burning bright point appears above the horizon. It quickly grows larger and larger and rises higher (how you wish you could stop it!), and then up-leaps the sun and it is the day. At once the heat begins. Walking becomes toilsome and wearisome, and one turns back to the house for one’s morning cup of tea, under the electric fan or the old-fashioned punkah, on the verandah.

It is not long before the servants begin shutting the house up to keep it cool every door and window barred against the heat enemy, that now begins to besiege the fortress. If we can sit inside our fort under the fan, we keep fairly cool. But if we have to go out in the now blazing sun, as most people have to do, then we feel the full force of the heat. In places like Bombay, Calcutta and Madras, the heat is humid, for the air is full of moisture; it is like being in a hothouse or a Turkish bath, and our shirt is wet through with sweat. But in Punjab, the heat is very dry and fierce, like the blast of a furnace.

By noon the sun is the blazing right over-head-a fierce, scorching, pitiless sun. The farmers in the fields take refuge under the shade of the trees and sleep. But noon is not the hottest time. All the afternoon the heat gets more and more intense, until about four o’clock it is at its worst; and the only thing is to lie indoors under the fan and gasp. How welcome is tea when it comes!

At about six o’clock, we can open doors and windows. But it is still very hot outside, even after the sun has set; for the heated earth, like a hot brick, gives out heat for hours. But when darkness comes, it gets a little cooler; so that one is glad at last to get to sleep in the open air with only a sheet over one.

A Man staying in the cool and calm atmosphere of his house can hardly know what heat can do to a person. We sometimes do feel hot in spite of the fan but that heat is bearable. What about the man on the road? Only a person who has had an experience of this can know the difference and appreciate the comfort which we find only by staying within our four walls.

I dread heat and cold equally. But once on an exceptionally hot day, I had to remain out of doors on business. I started at eight in the morning when the heat was somewhat bearable. I thought I would finish whatever I had to do before it got unbearably hot. But alas! I had not taken into account the hurdle that was to come that day before me. Every step threw me behind schedule. At noon, worn out, hot and miserable, I still found myself on the road.

During these hours my clothes got wet with perspiration and dried up so many times that I made quite a clumsy figure. During this period I drank water like a fish.

Now I thought once again to refresh myself with some cold drink. I entered a restaurant. I demanded a cold drink and the bearers there must have taken me for a madman as they watched me consume some four or five glasses of it. You cannot imagine how much at ease I felt inside that air-conditioned restaurant. I almost thought of sitting down there for the rest of the day. But I had to move out to finish my work for the day.

Here on the road, for the first time in the day, I saw a person who was in greater trouble than myself and who looked more uneasy than I. He was a bald-headed middle-aged man. As he went along I saw to my horror that he went with a bundle on his head. I could not be mad but he was surely almost mad with heat. I cannot say whether he actually went mad by the time he reached home. It made me almost nervous when I realised that my condition was not much better. The next thing I did was to take a bus and return home.

That day was a day I spent in hell. The next day I read in the newspaper that a man had died due to heat. Such was the intensity of summer.

“All Summer in a Day” takes place on the planet Venus, a generation after the first colonists from Earth arrived there. Venus has a peculiar climate: every seven years, the sun comes out for just two hours. The rest of the time, it rains—all day, every day. The planet is covered with thick jungles and unruly weeds , perpetually caught in a cycle of growth and destruction. Humans live underground in a network of tunnels, eagerly awaiting the very brief summer.

When the story opens, a group of nine-year-old children are gathered excitedly by the window of their underground classroom. After seven long years, today is the day that scientists predict the sun will make its brief appearance; indeed, the rain seems to be slowing. One child, Margot, stands apart. Unlike most of the children, Margot lived on Earth until five years ago, so while they all speculate about what the sun is like, Margot can actually remember quite well. Margot has not taken well to her new home on Venus: she is frail, quiet, and pale, as if “the rain had washed out the blue from her eyes and the red from her mouth and the yellow from her hair.” Lately, she has begun to panic at the touch of water.

As the two-hour summer approaches, the schoolchildren read and write short stories about the sun. Margot finds herself the object of teasing when William , a boy in her class, tries to antagonize her by claiming she didn’t write the poem she shared with the class. This is typical torment for Margot: the other children tend to tease her or avoid her, because they envy her childhood on Earth and the fact that her parents may even spend thousands of dollars to move her back there. To some extent, Margot seems to have brought this isolation upon herself, because she refuses to participate in games or songs unless they relate to the sun. For Margot, life on Venus is all but unbearable and the sun is all-important, and she makes no secret of these feelings.

On the day the sun is set to appear, these tensions are close to a boiling point. While their teacher is briefly out of the room, William pushes and taunts Margot, but she doesn’t respond, continuing to stare out the classroom window. Angered, William tells Margot that the sun won’t come out after all. She’s unsure whether to believe him, but clearly alarmed. Soon, the other children join William in taunting Margot about the sun, the thing she most cares about. William leads the other children in grabbing Margot and pushing her into a closet. She struggles and cries, but they lock the door, smile at one another, and return to the classroom. They seem to forget about the incident immediately.

Just as the children return to the classroom, the rain slows even more and, finally, stops. They crowd eagerly by the classroom door. In the sudden roaring silence and stillness, the sun comes out, flooding the sky and jungle with radiant light. The jungle is revealed as a tumultuous tangle of “flesh-like weed,” resembling a “nest of octopi” bleached a sickly ash grey by years of relative darkness.

The children rush outside and peel off their jackets, reveling in the warmth of the sun. It is far better than they even imagined it would be. They run, laugh, and yell, staring at the sun and trying to savor every joyful moment. But all too soon, a girl begins to wail—she has caught a single raindrop in her palm. Immediately sobered, the children walk and then run back to the underground classroom as the sky darkens and the torrential rain recommences. It seems somehow louder and more painful than before, and the seven year distance between the present and the next glimpse of sunshine seems incomprehensibly long.

Just as these somber feelings overtake the children, they suddenly remember Margot, still locked in the closet. They glance at each other, guilty and chastened. Slowly, against the backdrop of the terrible rain, they walk to the now-silent closet. They let Margot out.

Beth Rodden is a professional rock climber who, along with three other climbers, was kidnapped and held hostage by Islamic militants in 2000 while on a climbing trip in Kyrgyzstan. The following is excerpted from her new memoir, “A Light Through the Cracks,” about the day she returned home to the U.S.

Amsterdam, August 2000

By the time my boyfriend, Tommy Caldwell, and I made it to Amsterdam’s gleaming, sterile airport, we had been passed along a half dozen times, like an important but increasingly well-worn package. Military helicopters had brought us and our other two climbing partners from base to base. We’d endured a surreal ride on a private jet from the last military base to the capital, Bishkek, traveling alongside the tipsy and jovial president of Kyrgyzstan. He’d patted us on the shoulders like a grandfather and claimed us long enough for a photo op and a speech to local media in a language we couldn’t understand. Then he handed the four of us off to the American embassy, which scrambled to find us flights home. A few days later, Tommy and I drove across the Kazakhstan border, in a hired car with a diplomatic escort, to the international airport in Almaty, and finally a commercial jet took us from Central Asia to the edge of the Atlantic. Now we had just one more flight to go.

Our tickets were a last-minute mess, and we needed to check on our connection. As we crossed the terminal, I carried a brown paper gift bag from the airport candy shop — despite what we’d been through, I still wanted to bring my older brother a present from this trip. I watched the families clustered around the gates, the lone business travelers perched at the bars, scanning each face around me. I’d been on edge through practically every step of the journey: The embassy in Bishkek had felt almost safe, but at the hotel where they’d sent us to get some sleep, I’d felt vulnerable and stayed vigilant.

In the airport, I was hungry again. When we’d made it to the second army base, the one that felt like a cluster of portable classrooms set down on a vast brown plain, we’d stuffed ourselves with barley and warm buttered bread, but I could not stay full. I had just eaten two chocolate croissants. Still, my stomach felt like a cavern. My brother didn’t really need a present, did he?

I ate half the chocolate in the bag before we got to our gate.

The line at the KLM Royal Dutch Airlines counter felt so orderly. The whole airport did. Just existing there felt like getting a big, soothing hug. When we’d boarded the flight in Kazakhstan, the passengers had formed no line. Everybody just pushed in a scrum toward the plane. Tommy and I stood frozen, like the good, shocked scouts that we were, and got lost in the flood. I felt so fragile, so extremely fragile, and so resigned to that fragile state.

We weren’t safe. That was obvious to me. No line, no order, no rule of law. I loved rules. People smoked openly on that first plane.

“Next,” the flight attendant said as we arrived at the counter. Her voice was as professionally cheerful as her uniform: light blue skirt, light blue jacket, white blouse underneath.

“We’re here to check in for our flight,” I said.

“Wonderful. May I please have your boarding passes?”

I mumbled something apologetic and handed her a few crumpled, dirty sheets of paper. “I think we have to get our seats and stuff from you.”

She pinched her brow as she read our mess of documents. She typed vigorously. I was sure this meant we weren’t going to make it home.

“Can you wait one second?” she asked, flashing a strained smile. She disappeared behind a wall.

I looked at Tommy. He stared into the blank space where the woman had just been. I couldn’t tell if he was as scared as I was, if he was also monitoring the people pooling and flowing around us for any threat. I felt like I had grown an invisible antenna that vibrated continually, never at rest. Never letting me rest. A memory tried to surface inside me: a body in silhouette, sailing off a dark cliff. A crunch, and an exhale. I forced it back down.

Two blond attendants now appeared where there had been one.

“Can you tell me: Was it something KLM did?” the new flight attendant asked.

I looked back at Tommy. Did he know what she was talking about? Did she know what had happened? Tommy shrugged.

“Wait, what?” I said. “What was something . . . ?”

“Well, um, how to say this,” the flight attendant said. “It says on your tickets, ‘Emotionally distressed passengers, please take care.’ So, we are just wondering if it’s something KLM did.” She looked concerned and defensive in her caring, like a hospital billing manager. She didn’t want to know the answer, but she had to ask.

I didn’t want a stranger to try to comfort me, but I did feel the need to comfort her. So I said, “Oh no, definitely not. We were just kidnapped and we want to go home.”

I couldn’t believe how easily the sentence came out. We were just kidnapped . . . I’d never said it so plainly before.

The flight attendant exhaled all her breath at once, stunned and relieved. “Well, good,” she said.

Well, good?

“KLM does our best. How about business-class seats for you two?” She printed our fresh, flat boarding passes. Tommy and I boarded the plane.

We ate every meal and every snack that was offered to us on the long ride home. My hunger was like a portal opened into a galaxy — infinite, absolute. When I was in middle school, I used to watch my older brother, David, eat, stunned by the mountain of food he could consume. Now, it felt strangely freeing to eat with that type of abandon. I hadn’t done that since ninth grade, when I became obsessed with climbing.

I could eat, but I still couldn’t sleep. My anxiety kept me wide awake, and my wakefulness in turn meant I had nothing but space and time for the anxiety to spin itself tighter in my body. I kept wondering if the plane would crash. That seemed possible, maybe even probable, given how the rest of our trip had gone. An appropriate ending, in a way. I wondered if I’d be scared. What would Tommy say to me before impact? Would it hurt? Our backpack, stuffed at our feet, was filled with souvenirs purchased in a blur during our strange interlude in Bishkek, between our flight with the president and our diplomatic drive across the border. I had stuffed the paltry remains of the airport chocolate into our bag alongside the rest of the things we’d acquired: a hand-carved wooden chess set, a wool hanging. Proof that we’d done something major and been somewhere cool. What were we thinking?

The backpack that sat at our feet had been lost in transit when we’d first landed in Kyrgyzstan, full of hope for our climbing adventure, and was waiting for us, perversely intact, at the hotel in Bishkek after our escape. We’d left San Francisco with 20 expedition duffels, and all I had left was this backpack filled with trinkets from a country to which I’d never return. Maybe that was why we’d bought them, with the money Tommy had wadded up in his sock just before we were marched away from our camp at gunpoint. Maybe it was some attempt to fabricate a decent memory of the place.

My hands trembled the whole 12 hours to San Francisco. I knew I needed sleep, but if the plane did crash, wasn’t I supposed to be awake for that? I had no idea how to act, what to do or say or who to be when we saw our parents. I’d left as a 20-year-old girl full of herself, ready for the world, sure I was doing something extraordinary. I was living out the dream I’d stared at in the posters I hung on my bedroom wall: climbing to incredible heights in far-off places. My mother had hardly traveled, certainly not by my age. I’d felt so awfully superior as I’d walked down the jetway when we left. I didn’t even turn back to wave.

My parents had given me everything — pride, freedom, confidence. They trusted me. They trusted my decisions. They trusted the world. Now I was returning home a broken mess. I’d spoken to them a few times from the embassy in Bishkek, the words mainly drowned in my tears. I wanted to be small again, so small I could crawl through the phone into their arms, where they’d hold me and shush me and stroke my head. I wanted my mother to say, “Mama’s here, Mama’s here,” just like she always did when I was a girl. I wanted to shrink back into that little-girl body and lay my head in her lap and cry.

They were so kind, so present, and gently but firmly on my team. But inside, I always felt nervous, like there was a line I was afraid to cross, like I needed to be tougher, solid, unbreakable. And even if I could lay my head in my mother’s lap and have her say, “Mama’s here,” would that still work to soothe me? I was not the same person I had been when I left. My thoughts flapped like the loose end of a film in an old-fashioned movie projector, the front reel spinning empty.

I looked over at Tommy. Maybe he’d know what to do. His head was slumped at a 45-degree angle to his chest, his mouth dropped open, snoring. He was sick. His brain was more lucid and less spastic than mine, but his body was breaking down. He had a fever. I envied Tommy’s oblivion. I felt so alone.

We landed. My palms were sweating, but Tommy’s hands felt strong. That felt like a plan: I’d hold his strong hand and we’d present a united front, though I hadn’t told him about my looping, flapping mind. I was trying to stay composed — for him, for me, maybe for my parents too. We collected our bag of souvenirs from under the airplane seats. The souvenirs promised our trip was normal. We were normal. I grabbed a free chocolate bar and a package of cookies from the plane’s galley as we exited. I never did anything like that, but now instead of saying, “Don’t eat that, Rodden,” I thought, “Just in case we don’t have any other food.”

I didn’t race off the plane like I had seen people do in movies, straight into their loved ones’ arms. Instead I walked so slowly that other passengers started passing us. I was desperate to return home, to the narrow twin bed in my parents’ house, on our quiet block filled with minivans and white Honda sedans, to replant myself in the flat farmland around Davis, California, to recommit to the safe wide sidewalks. I just didn’t know how. I wondered if people could tell we’d changed: if we walked differently or stood slightly less straight, if we’d absorbed so much fear and terror that we now emitted it.
