Essay on Healthy Lifestyle

The top secret of being physically fit is adopting a healthy lifestyle. A healthy lifestyle includes regular exercise, a healthy diet, taking good care of self, healthy sleep habits, and having a physically active daily routine. Lifestyle is the most prevailing factor that affects one’s fitness level. A person leading a sedentary lifestyle has a low fitness level whereas living a healthier life not only makes a person fit but also extends life. Good health has a direct impact on our personality. A person with a good and healthy lifestyle is generally more confident, self-assured, sociable, and energetic.

A good and healthy lifestyle allows one to relish and savor all the pleasures in life without any complications. Even all the wealth is less valuable when compared to sound health. Having all the luxuries in the world does not fulfill its purpose when one is continuously ill, depressed, or suffering from a significant health complication. A healthy person has a clear and calm perception of everything without prejudice. His actions and decisions are more practical and logical and are hence more successful in life.

A good habit is a key factor for a healthy lifestyle. To maintain a stable body and mind, one needs to inculcate good habits. Waking up early in the morning, regularly exercising or a good morning walk helps to keep our body energetic and refresh our mind. Maintaining a balanced and nutritious diet throughout the day is vital for maintaining a good lifestyle. Too much indulgence in alcohol or smoking excessively is not at all appropriate for a healthy lifestyle.

Self-Discipline

Self-discipline is important for maintaining a good lifestyle. When we are self-disciplined then we are more organized and regular in maintaining good health. A disciplined life is a regulated life. A man without discipline is a ship without a rudder. Discipline needs self-control. One who cannot control himself can seldom control others. The level of discipline and perseverance largely determines a person’s success. Self-discipline is the act of disciplining one’s own feelings, desires, etc. especially with the intention of improving oneself. It strengthens our willpower. The stronger our will power the positive will be our decision. It enables us to conquer our own self.

Punctuality

Punctuality is the habit of doing things on time. It is the characteristic of every successful person and everyone must observe punctuality in order to win success in life. Punctuality is necessary for maintaining a healthy lifestyle. It should become a habit with us. A punctual person is able to fulfill all his responsibilities and hence is treated with respect in society. It is needed in every walk of life.

Diet is an important component for overall fitness and works best in combination with exercise. A balanced diet and exercise regularly help to maintain good health. It is necessary to reduce weight if one is overweight or obese, failing which one cannot be physically fit for long. For people with obesity, more exercise and a strict regime are necessary, preferably under guidance. There are many ways of making the diet healthier.

Use less sugar and salt while cooking food.

Use less oil while cooking. Avoid deep-frying as much as possible.

Eat more fruits daily. They provide more vitamins and minerals to our bodies.

Add sprouts of gram and moong dal to at least one meal in a day. Add fiber to your diet. Use whole grains instead of polished cereals. Eat lots of salad and yogurt.

Eat fermented food regularly. Fermented food contains many useful bacteria that help in the process of digestion.

Prevention of Lifestyle Diseases

By adopting a healthy lifestyle one can avoid lifestyle diseases. The following are some ways in which we can prevent lifestyle diseases.

Eat a balanced diet that contains important nutrients. One must include more fresh fruits and green vegetables in the diet. Refrain from eating junk food. Stay away from foods that contain large amounts of salt or sugar.

Exercise regularly. Spend more time outdoors and do activities such as walking, running, swimming, and cycling.

One must avoid overindulgence in alcohol, junk food, smoking, and addiction to drugs and medicines.

Avoid spending too much on modern gadgets like mobile phones, laptops, televisions, etc. Spend time on these gadgets for short intervals of time only.

Set a healthy sleeping routine for every day. Waking early in the morning and going to bed early at night should be a daily habit. Lead an active life.

Unhealthy Lifestyle

Bad food habits and an unhealthy lifestyle such as less or no physical activity may lead to several diseases like obesity, high blood pressure or hypertension, diabetes, anemia, and various heart diseases. An unhealthy lifestyle reduces productivity and creativity in a person. It also adversely affects moods and relationships. It leads to depression and anxiety in human beings.

Maintaining a healthy lifestyle not only makes a person confident and productive but also drives him to success. A person with a healthy lifestyle will enjoy both personal and social life.

200 Words Essay On Healthy Lifestyle

Practically everyone, including publications, social media sites, and television, uses the term healthy lifestyle. Through these channels, the need of living a healthy lifestyle is emphasised, yet individuals continue to lead unhealthier lifestyles and ultimately pay the price for it. Living a healthy lifestyle is essential to our daily lives. Having good eating habits, getting enough sleep, and fitting in some physical activity each day are the essential components of a healthy lifestyle. However, the majority of individuals disregard their health in favour of their everyday obligations. The worst thing you can do to yourself is to ignore your health. Many individuals only become aware of this after experiencing health problems.

It's time for people to realise how crucial good health is and how only being healthy will allow us to work effectively on other elements of our life. Just a few little adjustments to the daily schedule are needed to develop these healthy behaviours. Once these modifications become habits, you will soon be living a healthy lifestyle.

To prevent such health problems later in life, it is preferable to set aside some time to practise the healthy behaviours discussed above while you are still young and active.

500 Words Essay On Healthy Lifestyle

It is simple to develop unhealthy habits, but it takes some work to undo them and adopt a healthy lifestyle. Despite how frequently the significance of leading a healthy lifestyle has been emphasised, few people take it seriously. Even those who want to follow it to better their way of life often fail since it requires a lot of willpower to do so. Instead of going overboard, it is advised to take things slowly. Over time, this will assist you in achieving your objective. Here are some tips for creating wholesome habits and leading a healthy lifestyle.

Avoid Bad Habits

Smoking | To live a healthy lifestyle, you must first give up smoking and any other tobacco products to which you may be hooked. It is evident that this cannot be done in a single day and would not be simple. It is advised to seek expert assistance to stop doing the same over time.

Alcohol Numerous health problems might result from excessive drinking. If you are addicted to it, it is advised that you seek professional assistance as well as support from your friends and family to break the habit.

Fast Food | These days, ordering takeaway and eating junk for most of the week has almost become religious. It's time to reduce your consumption of fast food and replace it with wholesome home-cooked meals. You will maintain your health and physical fitness by doing this.

Screen Dependence | Nowadays, the majority of individuals are addicted to their phone displays. You need to stop doing this harmful practice right away. You also need to refrain from watching too much TV or using the computer for too long.

Avoiding Meals- | Nowadays, a lot of individuals choose to skip meals because they are so preoccupied with their work. The majority of people are often busy in the morning, therefore there is a propensity to skip breakfast to fit in other responsibilities. The harshest punishment you can ever give your body is this.

Overusing medication | Many individuals search for quick fixes to ease their physical and emotional suffering, and taking a pill or two is one certain solution. For these individuals, painkillers work best, but it is important to understand that they only provide brief comfort and may have harmful side effects.

It's time to adopt healthy routines. Knowing the behaviours to avoid can help you take steps to stop doing them and replace them with healthy ones. You may take the following actions in this direction:

Restrict your interactions with those who smoke, drink, or engage in other harmful behaviours.

Remind yourself of the advantages of living healthfully.

Do your best to surround yourself with individuals who live the lifestyle you want.

Spend your spare time engaging in your interests and activities so you won't have time for bad habits.

Engage in physical activity to encourage endorphin production. This is a fantastic method to avoid stress and all of its harmful effects.

A balanced diet, regular exercise, sufficient sleep, happiness, and optimism all contribute to a healthy lifestyle. We are living well when we maintain a healthy lifestyle. Maintaining a healthy lifestyle is crucial for your happiness now and in the future.

Healthy Lifestyle and Eating Essay

  • As a template for you assignment

Healthy eating is the process of keeping the body clean, strong, and healthy at all times (Allen, 1926). Healthy living, on the other hand, means that one should be able to eat the right food, get enough exercise, and maintain cleanliness (James, 1907). Unfortunately, many people do not keep track of these requirements. Thus, they end up with serious health problems, which can be difficult to treat. Prevention of these problems can be accomplished through maintaining a healthy lifestyle. Such a lifestyle is achievable by eating the right food and adhering to all the requirements of healthy living.

The human body needs a balanced diet, which includes enough minerals, fats, vitamins, fiber, and carbohydrates (Albrecht, 1932). These substances are required by the body to facilitate the growth and functioning of body tissues. Low energy foods such as vegetables and fruits have small amounts of calories per unit volume of food. Therefore, it is advisable to eat this combination of foods in large volumes as it contains fewer calories, but has nutrients that are essential for optimal body functionality. Incidentally, one should take food that is free from unhealthy fats, but should ensure that whole grains and proteins go alongside fruits and vegetables.

Apart from choosing the best foods for the body, it is also advisable that people should maintain moderate quantities of food intake. For instance, it is prudent to eat less of unhealthy foods such as refined sugar and saturated fats and more of healthy foods such as vegetables and fruits. This pattern of eating has massive health benefits to its adherents. As such, people should strive to develop good eating habits that can sustain them throughout their lives.

Further, it is recommended that one should eat a heavy breakfast an hour after waking up. The breakfast needs to consist of carbohydrates, healthy fats, and proteins in balanced proportions. It should then be followed by light meals throughout the day. This requirement is important since breakfast helps to initiate the body’s metabolism. The light and healthy meals thereafter help maintain a high body energy level that keeps one active throughout the day (Allen, 1926). People should avoid eating late at night. Early dinners are advisable followed by an average of 15 hours of no food until breakfast time the next morning. Past studies show that this pattern helps regulate body weight (James, 1907).

People who are diagnosed with lifestyle diseases such as anemia, high blood pressure, and diabetes among others are advised to follow diets that are rich in fruits and vegetable content (Allen, 1926). Depending on the stage of illness, such people should strictly watch what they eat. For example, high blood pressure patients should cut down on sodium, which is mainly found in salt. They should also avoid foods that have high cholesterol and saturated fats since diets of this sort prompt a high risk of artery clogging. Consequently, it increases the risk of heart attacks and blood vessel diseases (Albrecht, 1932). Further, they need to control the amount of carbohydrates they take.

Carbohydrates should only account for 50% of their daily calories (Allen, 1926). Finally, they are discouraged from foods with a high phosphorous content since they may lead to bone diseases (Allen, 1926). Overweight people constitute another special needs group. They should reduce weight to be healthy. Consequently, they need at least 30 minutes of rigorous physical exercise everyday and a lean diet.

In conclusion, all these groups of people should increase their water intake. Water is essential in the human body since it facilitates the regulation of all body functions. As such, it enhances body health. In this regard, people should strive to take at least eight glasses per day. Apparently, healthy living calls for discipline and commitment. If people foster these two values in the lifestyles, the world will be full of healthy people.

Healthy Diet Essay

Consuming a healthy diet throughout a person’s life helps prevent malnutrition in all its forms, as well as a range of diet-related non-communicable diseases and conditions. But the increased consumption of processed food, rapid urbanisation and changing lifestyles have led to a shift in dietary patterns. People now consume fast food and do not eat enough fibre-rich fruits, vegetables and whole grains. So, to help students understand the importance of a healthy diet, we have provided a “Healthy Diet” essay.

Students can also go through the list of CBSE Essays on different topics. It will help them to improve their writing skills and also increase their scores on the English exam. Moreover, they can participate in different essay writing competitions which are conducted at the school level.

500+ Words Healthy Diet Essay

A healthy diet consists of simple, natural and/or well-cooked foods which promote health and protect us from diseases. It keeps our organ systems functioning well. The diet that we consume is decided by our socio-cultural norms, lifestyle patterns and the type of activities we are engaged in. A healthy diet includes nutrition, nutrients, food groups, a balanced diet and special dietary requirements.

Balanced Diet

A diet that contains all the essential nutrients like proteins, carbohydrates, fats, minerals and vitamins in the proportion required for the normal growth and development of the body is called a balanced diet. The important components of a balanced diet are cereals, pulses, milk, fruits and vegetables, fats and oil. A balanced diet constitutes a healthy diet. Thus, we all should try to follow a balanced diet.

Role of Nutrients

Nutrients that we obtain through food have vital effects on physical growth and development. It also helps in maintaining normal body function, physical activity and health. Nutritious food is thus needed to sustain life and activity. A healthy diet must provide all essential nutrients in the required amounts. Requirements for essential nutrients vary with age, gender, physiological status and physical activity. Dietary intakes lower or higher than the body requirements can lead to undernutrition or overnutrition, respectively.

Eating too little food during certain significant periods of life such as infancy, childhood, adolescence, pregnancy and lactation and eating too much at any age can lead to harmful consequences. An adequate diet, providing all nutrients, is needed throughout our lives. Eating a variety of foods from each food group is crucial for supplying the individual with all the essential nutrients that the body needs, including carbohydrates, proteins, fats, vitamins, minerals and water.

Special Dietary Requirements

The amount of food or nutrients required by a person in a day depends upon the need for energy. These needs are directly related to age and physical activity. During the rapid growth years, i.e. 12–22 years for boys and 12–18 years for girls, there is a gradual increase in daily food requirements. But as we grow old, our daily need for energy decreases. The amount of energy required by people engaged in low, moderate or high levels of physical activity differs. A sports person always needs to consume more calories than a non-sports person. Similarly, the dietary needs of a woman during pregnancy and lactation are higher.

Before we eat, we should think about what goes on our plate, cup, or bowl. Foods like vegetables, fruits, whole grains, low-fat dairy products, and lean protein foods should be part of our diet. These contain the nutrients that we need to maintain a heart-healthy eating plan. Eating a healthy diet will keep our body fit, healthy and free from all kinds of diseases. With a healthy body and mind, we can enjoy our life and can achieve whatever we want in our life.

Students must have found the “Healthy Diet” essay useful for improving their essay writing skills. They can get the study material and the latest updates on CBSE/ICSE/State Board/Competitive Exams at BYJU’S.

To do that well, one must always eat healthily and play brain games like Chess, puzzles and more to sharpen the brain.

Physical Health Alone is Not Everything

There is this stigma that surrounds mental health. People do not take mental illnesses seriously. To be completely fit, one must also be mentally fit. When people completely discredit mental illnesses, it creates a negative impact.

For instance, you never tell a person with cancer to get over it and that it’s all in their head in comparison to someone dealing with depression . Similarly, we should treat mental health the same as physical health.

Parents always take care of their children’s physical needs. They feed them with nutritious foods and always dress up their wounds immediately. However, they fail to notice the deteriorating mental health of their child. Mostly so, because they do not give it that much importance. It is due to a lack of awareness amongst people. Even amongst adults, you never know what a person is going through mentally.

Thus, we need to be able to recognize the signs of mental illnesses . A laughing person does not equal a happy person. We must not consider mental illnesses as a taboo and give it the attention it deserves to save people’s lives.

How Taiwan won the hearts of my American kids

JiaYing Grygiel took her sons Paul and Joseph to see her birthplace of Taiwan.

“I don’t like Chinese,” announced my 8-year-old. (Ironically, in Chinese. That softened the blow.)

I knew this day would come, when my American-born, half-Taiwanese children would reject the language and culture I’d worked so hard to teach them. Time to visit the motherland and win them back.

How do you appeal to the hearts of  8- and 12-year-old boys? Unsanctioned time away from school, homework free. Frittering away money at night market games. The cross-cultural allure of amusement parks.

Over 16 fulfilling days, my boys and I explored Taipei, Hualien, Kaohsiung, Tainan and Chiayi, a full loop around the itty-bitty island nation where I was born. Taiwan is about the size of Maryland, and you can drive from tip to tip in 5.5 hours. I wanted my kids to see it all … while it’s still here.

The darkest part of my soul can’t help worrying about the unthinkable. Taiwan and China have been dancing around war since 1949. No one thought Russia would invade Ukraine for real either. The difference is, unlike Ukraine, only a dozen other teeny tiny nations officially recognize Taiwan’s sovereignty . And Taiwan is surrounded by water. There’s no place to flee.

Writer JiaYing Grygiel with her two sons in various Taiwan settings.

With Ukraine heavy on my mind, I took my kids to experience everything in their country of heritage.

We spent most of our time in the capital city of Taipei, where I lived the first four years of my life. From the top of Taipei’s tallest skyscraper, you can see the metropolis hugging the folds of green mountains. From street level, the city is a warren of alleys crammed with scooters and burglar bars over every window. The mosquitoes are relentless.

On our island circuit, we dug our toes into the beaches of Kenting, hiked in the Taroko Gorge, caught the sunrise at Alishan with mugs of hot cocoa in hand.

No one believed these American kids could speak the language. They’d test, asking Mandarin: “When’s your birthday?” My boys laughed their heads off, and I savored a smug mom moment.

We operated mostly as stealth tourists, because we speak Mandarin and more or less look the part. Except for the waiter who looked my boys up and down and tilted his head. “Mixed blood?” Busted. Taiwanese people are friendly in that no-filter, New Yorker sort of way.

Writer JiaYing Grygiel with her two sons in various Taiwan settings.

More clues to our outsider status: Wearing shorts and a T-shirt, when everyone else is bundled in puffy coats. (In 85 degree weather, I’m not kidding.) Walking around with giant bottles of ice water. Taiwanese people will drink tea, bubble tea, juice — anything but cold water. Or asking for a fork. Worst case scenario, I fed my much-too-old kids with chopsticks like baby birds.

Americans come in all colors and shapes; the Taiwanese are much more homogenous. The drugstore’s makeup aisle offers foundation in exactly three shades: light, lighter, lightest. Forget clothes shopping. My American women’s size medium translated into a Taiwanese 5XL.

Wrapped in security

Growing up, anytime someone asked the Where are you really from? question, I’d say, “I was born in Taiwan,” which is accurate. Half the time, I’d hear back, “Thailand?”

Or I’d say: “My grandparents are from China.” Also accurate. I didn’t feel right claiming Taiwanese nationality when I don’t speak the Taiwanese dialect.

In the hours before our red-eye to Taiwan, self-doubt and panic crept up like bile. The trip would be a whirlwind of meeting extended family who’d only ever seen my boys on Facebook posts.

“Headed to the airport in a bit. Full of misgivings now,” I texted a Taiwanese friend. “What did I get myself into? We haven’t even left yet and I can feel the weight of my relatives’ criticism on me.”

Her response: “Well, you wanted your kids to be exposed to the culture. Having judgmental and controlling elders stressing you out is part of Taiwanese culture.”

A big family means drama and feuds all around. The flip side is we were wrapped with security everywhere we went. In Taiwanese culture, everyone older than you is an auntie or uncle, everyone younger is a little sister or brother. Even if you’re not blood related. Even if you’re just an acquaintance. Or a passer-by on the MRT.

I even accepted unmarked meds from a stranger on the bus, with gratitude. A kind grandma (not biological grandma, just a random older lady) fished pills out of her purse for my car sick kid.

Writer JiaYing Grygiel with her two sons in various Taiwan settings.

Taiwan is exceptionally safe 24/7: pre-dawn, late at night, in deserted side streets, in shoulder-to-shoulder crowds. A mom traveling alone with 2 kids? No problem. We never felt vulnerable, not for a second. Sorry Charles Sun, in real-life Taiwan, violent crime is virtually unheard of.

I wanted my boys to fall in love with their heritage, and nip that “I don’t like Chinese” mindset in the bud. I’m claiming victory.

Because after their first taste of Taiwan, the kids changed their tune. They said to me (in Mandarin): "Taiwan is so, so fun!  When are we going back?”

The Benefits and Challenges of Socialized Medicine

This essay about socialized medicine examines its role in providing universal healthcare access, transcending wealth and privilege to ensure equitable health services for all. It highlights the benefits of health equity and cost control while addressing challenges such as funding, political opposition, and bureaucratic inefficiencies. The narrative explores both the promise and obstacles of socialized medicine, emphasizing its potential to transform the healthcare landscape despite the hurdles it faces.

How it works

In the complex framework of healthcare systems, socialized medicine stands out as a bold initiative, infusing the narrative of access with vibrant inclusivity while navigating the stormy seas of controversy. This intricate narrative intertwines numerous benefits and challenges, crafting a story of healthcare evolution marked by both admiration and apprehension.

At its essence, socialized medicine epitomizes the noble aspiration of universal healthcare, transcending the confines of wealth and privilege. By eliminating financial barriers, it heralds an era where medical facilities open their doors to all, embracing every individual with healthcare services.

In this egalitarian vision, the threat of financial catastrophe fades, replaced by the comforting assurance that one’s socioeconomic status will not determine the quality of care they receive.

In the grand orchestration of health equity, socialized medicine serves as a steadfast conductor, harmonizing a melody of accessibility for all. Marginalized communities are no longer relegated to the fringes of healthcare access, as the beacon of universal coverage shines brightly, guiding the way toward a more just and equitable healthcare landscape. In this radiant vision, the vast gap between privilege and poverty narrows, fostering a society where the right to health is upheld as an unalienable birthright.

Yet, amidst the chorus of praise, discordant notes of dissent resonate through the discourse. The call for fiscal responsibility echoes, its tone tinged with concern over the immense challenge of funding such a monumental endeavor. The shadow of taxation looms large, casting doubt on the feasibility of sustaining this lofty vision without straining the state’s finances.

Furthermore, the political arena becomes a battleground, where entrenched interests vie for dominance. Private insurers, pharmaceutical giants, and vested stakeholders act as defenders of the status quo, wary of the transformative potential that socialized medicine represents. Armed with the tools of lobbying and misinformation, they wage an unrelenting campaign to erode public support and maintain the existing order.

Yet, perhaps the most formidable challenge lies within the labyrinthine corridors of bureaucracy. Here, the machinery of governance grinds slowly, entangled in a web of red tape and administrative obstacles. Long wait times and bureaucratic inefficiencies threaten to undermine the very foundation of socialized medicine, casting doubt on its capacity to provide timely and effective care.

In the arena of innovation, socialized medicine faces another test. The swift advance of technological progress heralds a new era of healthcare delivery, where precision medicine and digital therapeutics promise to revolutionize patient care. Yet, amidst the excitement of progress, the risk of stagnation looms, threatening to stifle innovation and consign patients to outdated treatments and practices.

In conclusion, the narrative of socialized medicine is one of victory and challenge, a story of hope and difficulty woven into the fabric of healthcare discourse. Its benefits are numerous, offering the promise of universal access, health equity, and cost control. Yet, its journey is fraught with obstacles, from the bureaucratic maze to political opposition and the imperative of fiscal responsibility. Ultimately, the future of socialized medicine hangs in the balance, uncertain yet filled with the potential to transform the healthcare landscape for generations to come.

A charming look at a reader’s many moods

Elisa Gabbert’s essays in “Any Person Is the Only Self” are brimming with pleasure and curiosity about a life with books.

what is a healthy lifestyle essay

Tell people you read and write for a living, and they picture a ghostly creature, an idea only incidentally appended to a body. What they often fail to understand is that the life of the mind is also a physical life — a life spent lugging irksomely heavy volumes around on the Metro and annotating their margins with a cramping hand. The poet, essayist and New York Times poetry columnist Elisa Gabbert is rare in grasping that reading is, in addition to a mental exercise, a movement performed in a particular place.

“If I remember anything about a book, I also remember where I read it — what room, what chair,” she writes in her charming new essay collection, “ Any Person Is the Only Self .” Writing, too, proves spatial: “I think essays, like buildings, need structure and mood. The first paragraph should function as a foyer or an antechamber, bringing you into the mood.”

The 16 delightfully digressive pieces in this collection are all moods that involve books in one way or another. But they are not just about the content of books, although they are about that, too: They are primarily about the acts of reading and writing, which are as much social and corporeal as cerebral.

In the first essay — the foyer — Gabbert writes about the shelf of newly returned books at her local library. “The books on that shelf weren’t being marketed to me,” she writes. “They weren’t omnipresent in my social media feeds. They were very often old and very often ugly. I came to think of that shelf as an escape from hype.” The haphazard selections on the shelf were also evidence of other people — the sort of invisible but palpable community of readers that she came to miss so sharply during the pandemic.

In another essay, she learns of a previously unpublished story by one of her favorite authors, Sylvia Plath, who makes frequent appearances throughout this book. Fearing that the story will disappoint her, Gabbert puts off reading it. As she waits, she grows “apprehensive, even frightened.”

There are writers who attempt to excise themselves from their writing, to foster an illusion of objectivity; thankfully, Gabbert is not one of them. On the contrary, her writing is full of intimacies, and her book is a work of embodied and experiential criticism, a record of its author’s shifting relationships with the literature that defines her life. In one piece, she rereads and reappraises books she first read as a teenager; in another, she and her friends form a “Stupid Classics Book Club,” to tackle “all the corny stuff from the canon that we really should have read in school but never had.”

Gabbert is a master of mood, not polemic, and accordingly, her writing is not didactic; her essays revolve around images and recollections rather than arguments. In place of the analytic pleasures of a robustly defended thesis, we find the fresh thrills of a poet’s perfected phrases and startling observations. “Parties are about the collective gaze, the ability to be seen from all angles, panoramically,” she writes in an essay about fictional depictions of parties. She describes the photos in a book by Rachael Ray documenting home-cooked meals — one of the volumes on the recently returned shelf — as “poignantly mediocre.” Remarking on a listicle of “Books to Read by Living Women (Instead of These 10 by Dead Men),” Gabbert wonders, “Since when is it poor form to die?”

“Any Person Is the Only Self” is both funny and serious, a winning melee of high and low cultural references, as packed with unexpected treasures as a crowded antique shop. An academic text on architecture, the Austrian poet Rainer Maria Rilke, a rare memory disorder whose victims recall every aspect of their autobiographies in excruciatingly minute detail, “Madame Bovary,” YouTube videos about people who work as professional cuddlers, a psychological study about whether it is possible to be sane in an insane asylum — all these feature in Gabbert’s exuberant essays. She is a fiercely democratic thinker, incapable of snobbery and brimming with curiosity.

Perhaps because she is so indefatigably interested, she gravitates toward writers who see literature as a means of doubling life, allowing it to hold twice as much. Plath confessed in her journals that she wrote in an attempt to extend her biography beyond its biological terminus: “My life, I feel, will not be lived until there are books and stories which relive it perpetually in time.” The very act of keeping a diary, then, splits the self in two.

Plath once insisted that bad things could never happen to her and her peers because “we’re different.” Gabbert asks “Different why?” and concludes that everyone is different: “We are we , not them. Any person is the only self.” But that “only” is, perhaps counterintuitively, not constrained or constricted. Walt Whitman famously wrote that his only self comprised “multitudes,” and Gabbert echoes him when she reflects, “If there is no one self, you can never be yourself, only one of your selves.” And indeed, she is loath to elevate any of her many selves over any of the others. When she rereads a book that she loved in her adolescence, she thinks she was right to love it back then. “That self only knew what she knew,” she writes. “That self wasn’t wrong .” Both her past self and her present self have an equal claim to being Elisa Gabbert, who is too fascinated by the world’s manifold riches to confine herself to a single, limited life.

Becca Rothfeld is the nonfiction book critic for The Washington Post and the author of “All Things Are Too Small: Essays in Praise of Excess.”

Need to know, life in the sick room: essays | challenging gender norms for women | book of the month from the john martin rare book room.

what is a healthy lifestyle essay

MARTINEAU, HARRIETT (1802-1876). Life in the sick-room: Essays . Printed in Boston by L.C. Bowles and W. Crosby, 1844. 20 cm tall.

Martineau was born in 1802 into a progressive Unitarian family in Norwich. Despite the societal expectations that confined her to domestic roles, Harriet’s intellect and determination were undeniable. In 1823, she challenged gender norms by anonymously publishing On female education , advocating for women’s rights to education and intellectual pursuits.

Her literary breakthrough came with the publication of Illustrations of political economy in 1832, a series of short stories that deftly wove economic theories into narratives about everyday people. This work not only brought her fame and financial security but also highlighted her as a significant intellectual force.

From 1834 to 1836, Martineau traveled across the United States. A staunch abolitionist and advocate for women’s rights, she wrote extensively against slavery and the lack of opportunities for women, eventually writing Society in America . Her extensive travels also led to insightful writings on the Middle East, India, and Ireland, further establishing her as a versatile and influential journalist and author.

Martineau began experiencing a series of symptoms while on her travels and, in 1839, returned to England for treatment. For someone experiencing a debilitating illness but not necessarily dying, being confined to a “sick room” was common at this time. It allowed the room to be set to the orders of the physician and made it easier for the family to care for their ill relative.

Although confined to her own sick room for five years, Martineau was financially secure and had a progressive, independent spirit. She oversaw her medical care and constructed an environment that best suited her needs. She even restricted access from her family, who she felt could be more emotionally draining than helpful. While resting and recuperating, Martineau remained very productive, writing a novel for children and the essays eventually published in Life in the sick-room .

Already considered an irritation in the medical community, she really caused a stir by claiming that Mesmerism , a pseudo-science medical treatment, cured her. Franz Anton Mesmer (1734-1815), a German physician, maintained that an “animal magnetism” pervades the universe and exists in every living thing.

He believed that its transmission from one person to another could cure various nervous disorders through its healing properties. Mesmer at first used magnets, electrodes, and other devices to effect his cures, but after arousing suspicion among his fellow physicians, he preferred to utilize his hands.

Considered quackery by many in the medical establishment, even in 1844—including by her physician brother-in-law who oversaw her care—physicians publicly attacked Martineau’s claims about Mesmerism. Her brother-in-law eventually published a detailed account of her illness. Although he promised it would anonymously appear in a medical journal, he instead created a public pamphlet and made little effort to disguise who he was talking about.

After ten years of good health, Martineau once again fell ill in 1855 and returned to her sick room. She remained there until her death in 1876. She continued to write during this time, completing, among other things, her autobiography, works promoting women’s suffrage, and critiques of the Contagious Diseases Acts , which targeted women in the name of preventing sexually transmitted illnesses.

After her death, the medical establishment, again including her brother-in-law, who publicly published the results of an unauthorized autopsy, went out of their way to discredit Martineau and her work. Without evidence, they claimed her illness led her to behave in unconventional and “unfeminine” ways. Martineau remained an inspiration to many, though, and her works live on as a testament to her resilience and rejection of the status quo.

Our copy of the first American edition of Life in the sick-room is quite unassuming. It features a standard 19th-century burgundy cloth cover that has faded over time. Since it was a book in the library’s circulating collection for most of its life, it features a “library cloth” rebacked spine with the label maker-printed call number and title easily visible. Inside, the paper is in good condition, with evidence of damage from a long-ago liquid spill. Much like Martineau herself, though, this little book has shown great resilience in the face of adversity!

What does 'asexual' mean? Exploring the meaning of the 'A' in LGBTQIA

what is a healthy lifestyle essay

According to a  2023 Gallup poll , 7.6% of U.S. adults self-identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender or something other than heterosexual. In the last 11 years, this has increased by 4.1 percentage points.

Today, over 20% of Gen Z adults – those between the ages of 18 to 26 – identify as part of the LGBTQ+ community, Gallup reports. The rising numbers come in part due to "larger society changing" with people feeling more comfortable sharing their identities, experts previously told USA TODAY .

Maybe you've seen or heard terms used to describe someone's identity. You might have a friend or family who identifies as "asexual," but were unsure of the exact definition. Fret not, we've got you covered.

What does the 'A' in LGBTQIA for?

The 'A' in LGBTQIA stands for " asexual ."

"LGBTQ" is an acronym. Over the last few decades, new letters have been added to the lineup.

Each letter in LGBTQ means:

  • B: Bisexual
  • T: Transgender  (differs from the rest of the acronym as it relates to gender and not sexual identity)
  • Q: Added to the acronym at the turn of the century to represent people identifying as  queer , a more ambiguous term (reclaimed since its use as a derogatory term for LGBTQ individuals) allowing people to avoid rigid labels. Some also take the Q to mean  questioning .

In recent years, I and A have been added, meaning  intersex and  asexual , respectively.

A plus sign is often attached at the acronym's end to include identities that may not fit into the other letters, such as pansexual or Two-Spirit .

When is Pride Month 2024? How the celebration of LGBTQ+ identities came to be.

What does 'asexual' mean?

Asexuality is an umbrella term , and being asexual exists on a spectrum. According to The Trevor Project, those who identify as asexual may have little interest in having sex, though they might desire emotionally intimate relationships.

An asexual person can be any gender or sex. " There is no asexual 'type,' " whatisasexuality.com states.

Other identities within the asexuality spectrum include:

  • Demisexual : People who experience sexual attraction when they form a strong emotional bond with another person.
  • Gray-A/Gray-ace : People who identify between being asexual and sexual.
  • Queerplatonic : People who experience non-romantic relationships with an intense emotional connection beyond traditional friendship.

Asexual people may experience " little to no desire " when it comes to sexual attraction, Aubri Lancaster , a sex educator who focuses on asexuality and aromanticism, previously told USA TODAY. Sexual attraction is a person's desire to be intimate with another. Someone can be sexually attracted to others without experiencing romantic attraction. While some who identify as asexual have no desire to have sex, others might want to.

Those who identify as asexual may experience romantic or aesthetic attraction to others, experts previously told USA TODAY. Romantic attraction is when someone desires a deep connection with another. Aesthetic attraction is one's appreciation for another's appearance or physical beauty and is not inherently connected to romantic or sexual attraction.

What does 'ace' mean?

" Ace " is a shortened term for asexual. Those who identify as ace often use the terms  "hetero-," "homo-," "bi-," and "pan-"  in front of the word "romantic" to describe who they experience attraction to, according to The Trevor Project.

For example, someone who is "homo-romantic" may be emotionally attracted to someone of the same sex or gender, but not sexually attracted to them.

Pride 2024: Latest news and events honoring LGBTQ rights

Misconceptions on asexuality

There are many misconceptions about asexuality and what it means to identify as asexual.

One common misconception is that asexuality is similar to abstinence or celibacy . This is untrue.

Unlike celibacy or abstinence – which can be temporary decisions based on personal beliefs or circumstances – asexuality is an orientation and identity; it is not a choice, but who someone is.

What are the colors of the asexual flag?

The colors of the asexual flag are black, gray, white and purple. Each color has its  own meaning :

  • Black:  Asexuality
  • Gray: Gray-Asexuality and Demisexuality
  • White: Non-asexual partners and allies
  • Purple: Community

Desirée Rieckenberg lifts students in need

The Massey Award winner and dean of students is always on call to help them navigate difficult situations.

Desiree Rieckenberg posing on UNC Campus.

Desirée Rieckenberg’s passion for helping students began when she was in their shoes.

Rieckenberg, the UNC-Chapel Hill dean of students, was a first-generation college student from a rural community when she arrived for her first year at Eastern Illinois University. She was forced to do a lot on her own as she learned how to navigate campus life.

Fortunately, she met people who invested in her when things were good but also supported her when they weren’t. That experience stuck with her and is something she still draws on today.

“The notion of working in a space that allows me to lift up and celebrate folks, and also support people as they navigate something, really rang true to me,” she said.

For helping students in many situations across her 12 years at Carolina, Rieckenberg was given a 2024 Massey Award . The honor recognizes “unusual, meritorious or superior” contributions by University employees.

Rieckenberg sees most of her work at what she calls intersections of the student experience, key moments that include anything from taking a leadership role in a student organization, struggling to pass a class or having a mental health challenge. From there, she strives to help support their success at Carolina.

Nominators highlighted her work creating the Care Team , which meets weekly to assist students experiencing challenges that threaten to disrupt academic progress, and partnering with the Office of Scholarship and Student Aid on a new financial literacy initiative. Carolina hired its first director of financial well-being this spring.

Additionally, Rieckenberg was praised as a “relentless champion” of the Carolina Veterans Resource Center, a “committed collaborator” and an unselfish servant leader who creates a culture of trust within her office.

Her team has grown over the last several years as it serves more students, particularly in times of crisis and emergency. No matter the situation, Rieckenberg keeps the individual student at the forefront.

“Carolina may be a big place, but Carolina should be a place where they feel like they are family and that they’re cared for,” she said.

The nature of her job means she’s as likely to get a call at 3 a.m. as she is at 3 p.m. She’s the primary contact for students going through traumatic life events ranging from the death of a loved one, a serious injury or significant financial setback.

She credits the people around her for helping juggle those difficult situations.

“It comes down to being able to surround yourself with good people and really talented people, and being able to have a supportive family and personal life that allows me to do those things,” Rieckenberg said. “I have a fantastic team of people who do the work and who surround me in a way that lifts up the things we’re doing in support of students. I have a fantastic partner, and I have two kids I’ve had since I’ve been in this role. They have come up in the space that they understand the work I do is important, that it helps and serves so many people.”

Rieckenberg was speechless when told of her Massey Award. She was drawn to this work because she saw its impact first-hand, as a student. She’s humbled to know others see that, too.

“It touches your heart in a way that recognizes an impact,” she said. “That’s really how I got into this work, because I had people who poured into me and created an impactful experience for me. And I continue to do this work with the hope that I can be impactful on our students and our campus and colleagues.”

Frasier, along with his brother LeRoy and John Lewis Brandon, integrated Carolina in 1955.

PTSD Has Surged Among College Students

The prevalence of post-traumatic stress disorder among college students rose to 7.5 percent in 2022, more than double the rate five years earlier, researchers found.

Post-traumatic stress disorder diagnoses among college students more than doubled between 2017 and 2022, climbing most sharply as the coronavirus pandemic shut down campuses and upended young adults’ lives, according to new research published on Thursday.

The prevalence of PTSD rose to 7.5 percent from 3.4 percent during that period, according to the findings . Researchers analyzed responses from more than 390,000 participants in the Healthy Minds Study, an annual web-based survey.

“The magnitude of this rise is indeed shocking,” said Yusen Zhai, the paper’s lead author, who heads the community counseling clinic at the University of Alabama at Birmingham. His clinic had seen more young people struggling in the aftermath of traumatic events. So he expected an increase, but not such a large one.

Dr. Zhai, an assistant professor in the Department of Human Studies, attributed the rise to “broader societal stressors” on college students, such as campus shootings, social unrest and the sudden loss of loved ones from the coronavirus.

PTSD is a mental health disorder characterized by intrusive thoughts, flashbacks and heightened sensitivity to reminders of an event, continuing more than a month after it occurs.

It is a relatively common disorder , with an estimated 5 percent of adults in the United States experiencing it in any given year, according to the most recent epidemiological survey conducted by the Department of Health and Human Services. Lifetime prevalence is 8 percent in women and 4 percent in men, the survey found.

The new research also found a sharp rise in the prevalence of a similar condition, acute stress disorder, which is diagnosed less than a month after a trauma. Diagnoses rose to 0.7 percent among college students in 2022, up from 0.2 percent five years earlier.

Use of mental health care increased nationally during the pandemic, as teletherapy made it far easier to see clinicians. Treatment for anxiety disorders increased most steeply, followed by PTSD, bipolar disorder and depression, according to economists who analyzed more than 1.5 million insurance claims for clinician visits between 2020 and 2022.

PTSD was introduced as an official diagnosis in 1980, as it became clear that combat experiences had imprinted on many Vietnam veterans, making it difficult for them to work or participate in family life. Over the decades that followed, the definition was revised to encompass a larger range of injury, violence and abuse, as well as indirect exposure to traumatic events.

However, the diagnosis still requires exposure to a Criterion A trauma, defined in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders as “death, threatened death, actual or threatened serious injury, or actual or threatened sexual violence.”

It is not uncommon for young adults to experience traumatic events. A 1996 study of Detroit residents found that exposure to traumatic events — such as violent assaults, injuries or unexpected death — peaked sharply between the ages of 16 and 20. It then declined precipitously after age 20.

Research suggests that less than one-third of people exposed to traumatic events go on to develop PTSD.

Shannon E. Cusack, an academic researcher who has studied PTSD in college students, said there was division within the field about whether the profound disruptions that young adults experienced during the pandemic — abrupt loss of housing and income, social isolation and fear about infections — amount to triggering events.

“They’re causing symptoms that are consistent with the PTSD diagnosis,” said Dr. Cusack, a clinical psychologist and an assistant professor of psychiatry at Virginia Commonwealth University. “Am I not going to treat them because their stressor doesn’t count as a trauma?”

The prevalence data, she said, points to a pressing need for PTSD treatment on college campuses. Short-term treatments developed for veterans, such as prolonged exposure therapy and cognitive processing therapy, have proved effective in managing PTSD symptoms.

Stephen P. Hinshaw, a professor of psychology at the University of California, Berkeley, said that the disruptions of the pandemic might have left college students emotionally depleted and less resilient when faced with traumatic events.

“Midway through this study, there may have been legitimately more trauma and death,” he said, adding that the lockdowns may have caused more general despair among young people. “With the general mental health deterioration, is it harder to cope with traumatic stressors if you do get exposed to them?”

Some changes to the diagnostic manual may have blurred the line between PTSD and disorders like depression or anxiety, Dr. Hinshaw said. In 2013, the committee overseeing revisions to the manual expanded the list of potential PTSD symptoms to include dysphoria, or a deep sense of unease, and a negative worldview, which could also be caused by depression, he said. But the changes, he added, do not account for the sharp increase in diagnoses.
