A Florida school asked second-graders to submit a photo of themselves in a bathtub doing reading homework — and then kicked out one student whose parents complained.

Misty and Christopher Dunham reached out to their daughter McKenzie’s teacher at Victory Christian Academy in Jacksonville to ask “what the intentions are” for the homework assignment, Action News Jax said .

The response of the 8-year-old’s teacher was not up to snuff.

“She did send out a message saying, ‘you should be in pajamas, be in your uniform, have fun with it.’ But, it didn’t sit right,” Misty Dunham reportedly said.

“A bathtub is not appropriate for a child to take a picture.”

Misty Dunham then escalated the situation to the administration of Victory Christian Academy when she was told “we have been sending this homework assignment for years, and you’re the only one complaining about it. Just cover your child in pillows or pajamas,” according to a police report filed by the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office.

Pastor Jesse Latta, the president of Victory Christian Academy, defended the school in a statement, writing that the assignment “was taken out of an online teacher resource and has been used in many schools.”

Misty and Christopher Dunham accuse Victory Christian Academy of retaliating against them by removing McKenzie from the school without any rationale. Misty Dunham said that after the complaint, the school requested a parental withdrawal and when she and her husband refused, it went forward with an administrative withdrawal.

“She did something right by telling Mom and Dad that she wasn’t comfortable with something, and now she’s no longer in school,” Christopher Dunham said.

While Latta refused to confirm or deny whether the school forced Dunham’s daughter to leave, he said the school does not plan on repeating the assignment next school year.

“While the assignment was completely innocent, out of an abundance of caution and for there to be no misunderstandings, our administration has removed this particular assignment for any future use,” Latta said. “We value our children and their safety is our top priority. We will continue to serve the children and families in which the Lord has graciously allowed us to have a part in their lives.”

FL school 'expels' second-grader after parents object to assignment asking for pic of her doing homework in bathtub

JACKSONVILLE, FLORIDA: A second grader was "administratively withdrawn” from a school after her parents raised concerns about a homework assignment that asked students to take "a picture of you doing reading homework in the bathtub.”

Misty and Christopher Dunham, of Jacksonville, recalled their surprise when students at Victory Christian Academy received the homework among other assignments , which included practicing “Psalm 24: 1-2 with an adult” three times, reading “Fun With Friends,” as well as practicing spelling, arithmetic, and phonics ahead of future tests. However, the unusual request to take a bathroom snap prompted Misty to send a message to her daughter's teacher at the Jacksonville school.

“I emailed the teacher ‘Hey, you may want to explain that. Send something out to the parents. Let them know what the intentions are.’ This just does not sound OK,” she told WJAX . “She did send out a message saying, ‘You should be in pajamas, be in your uniform, have fun with it.’ But, it didn’t sit right.”

Misty subsequently filed a report with the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office, stating how school administrators told the Dunhams, "We have been sending this homework assignment for years, and you’re the only one complaining about it.” The embattled mother said a school administrator later called. “(He said) ‘I think you guys should do a parental withdrawal for the child.’ I said, ‘I can’t. I can’t do that. We refuse to withdraw her,’” she recounted. “He said, ‘OK thank you for saying that,’ and continued on saying that, ‘Well, we’re going to proceed with an administration withdraw.’”

Now, their daughter is no longer enrolled at Victory Christian Academy, a ministry of Victory Baptist Church. The parents bemoaned that they did not get any explanation for the drastic move. “She did something right by telling mom and dad that she wasn’t comfortable with something, and now she’s no longer in school,” Christopher told WJAX, noting how he instructed his daughter that she was not going to do that part of the assignment.

“A bathtub is not appropriate for a child to take a picture,” Dunham told the television station.

“I emailed the teacher, ‘Hey, you may want to explain that. Send something out to the parents. Dunham said that she contacted school administrators and the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office to document the incident.

A police report obtained by WJAX stated that the Dunhams were told by administrators, “We have been sending this homework assignment for years, and you’re the only one complaining about it.”

“No explanation,” Dunham told WJAX .

“She did something right by telling mom and dad that she wasn’t comfortable with something, and now she’s no longer in school,” the girl’s father, Christopher Dunham, told the television station.

In a statement to WJAX , Pastor Jesse Latta, the president of Victory Christian Academy, said there were “no bad intentions” with the assignment and it has been removed from the curriculum.

“There was an assignment given, as I understand you have received a copy. It was taken out of an online teacher resource and has been used in many schools,” Latta wrote. “There were certainly no bad intentions with this assignment. When a parent contacted our teacher with a complaint, our teacher immediately sent out correspondence to all parents in the class to assure them that there were no bad intentions with this assignment and to clarify the guidelines. Latta did not address the student’s withdrawal from the school, WJAX reported.

School Expels Second Grader Who Was Told To Bring in a Picture of Herself in the Bathtub

victory christian academy homework news

A second grader was expelled from a Christian school in Jacksonville, Florida, after her parents questioned a homework assignment asking students to submit photos of themselves reading in a bathtub. Misty and Christopher Dunham were surprised with the homework their daughter's teacher assigned students at Victory Christian Academy.

The couple didn't feel comfortable with their daughter, McKenzie, being asked to submit the controversial assignment. “A bathtub is not appropriate for a child to take a picture,” Misty told Action News Jax.

The parents contacted the teacher about their daughter's assignment.

Misty reached out to the teacher to learn more about the class assignment. “I emailed the teacher ‘Hey, you may want to explain that. Send something out to the parents. Let them know what the intentions are.’ This just does not sound OK,” Misty told Action News Jax.

“She did send out a message saying, ‘you should be in pajamas, be in your uniform, have fun with it.’ But, it didn’t sit right.”

Misty also contacted school administration about the incident, stating that they "have been sending this homework assignment for years, and you’re the only one complaining about it," according to a police report from the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office.

A school administrator suggested withdrawing the student from the school.

The Dunham family continued seeking answers about the class assignment, and they received a phone call from an administrator at the school.

“[He said] ‘I think you guys should do a parental withdrawal for the child.’ I said, ‘I can’t. I can’t do that. We refuse to withdraw her,’” Misty explained to Local 12 . “He said, ‘OK thank you for saying that,’ and continued on saying that, ‘Well, we’re going to proceed with an administration withdraw.’”

Victory Christian Academy responded to the parents concerns by sending out a letter regarding their daughter's status with the institution.

The found out the second grader was no longer a student at Victory Christian Academy.

According to Action News Jax, the letter stated that McKenzie was no longer a student at Victor Christian Academy. The girl's parents were ultimately surprised the school did not explain why she was removed.

“No explanation,” Misty said. The Dunham family believed the school should have handled the situation better instead of kicking their daughter out of school.

“She did something right by telling mom and dad that she wasn’t comfortable with something, and now she’s no longer in school,” Christopher said.

The school president released a statement following the incident.

Victory Christian Academy's president, Pastor Jesse Latta, released a statement addressing the Dunham's concerns and the class assignment.

The statement reads: “There was an assignment given, as I understand you have received a copy. It was taken out of an online teacher resource and has been used in many schools. There were certainly no bad intentions with this assignment. When a parent contacted our teacher with a complaint, our teacher immediately sent out correspondence to all parents in the class to assure them that there were no bad intentions with this assignment and to clarify the guidelines. Girl kicked out of Christian school after refusing to take picture in bathtub

A second grader was kicked out of Victory Christian Academy in Jacksonville, Florida after her parents refused to participate in an assignment that involved taking a picture of their child “ doing reading homework in bathtub .”

When mother Misty Dunham saw the assignment from teacher Irene Castaneda, she wrote a note back to the teacher saying her 8-year-old daughter would do no such thing:

“I emailed the teacher ‘Hey, you may want to explain that. Send something out to the parents. Let them know what the intentions are.’ This just does not sound OK ,” Misty Dunham said. “She did send out a message saying, ‘you should be in pajamas, be in your uniform, have fun with it.’ But, it didn’t sit right.”

Actually, what Castaneda wrote (according to a police report) was “We have been sending this homework assignment home for years, and you’re the only one complaining about it. Just cover your child in pillows or pajamas then.”

As if a picture of a clothed or covered-up child was the exception to the rule .

What the hell were people sending her in the past? (Actually, that’s a valid question for another reason. The school’s Facebook page says Castaneda was hired in August . So how does she know no one else has complained about it?)

If the goal was to have a little fun with the reading homework by having Victory Christian Academy parents take a picture of their kids reading in the bathtub with clothes on and no running water , that should’ve been specified. It wasn’t. When Dunham spoke with other parents about the situation, they were equally flippant, saying things like “Just cover your child up with something.”

Everyone was treating Dunham like she was ruining the fun rather than admitting she had a point.

That’s when Dunham and her husband reached out to the school’s administration as well as the local sheriff’s office. They just wanted to document their concerns more than anything else. (It’s not like anyone was going to be charged with wrongdoing over this.) A police officer advised them not to complete that portion of the assignment.

The story should have just ended there. It was a poorly-explained assignment that rightly upset these parents, the teacher should’ve apologized and clarified, and everyone could have moved on.

But days later, the family received a call from an administrator urging them to withdraw their child from the school. When they refused to do that, he said the school would kick her out anyway :

“(He said) ‘I think you guys should do a parental withdrawal for the child.’ I said, ‘I can’t. I can’t do that. We refuse to withdraw her,’” Misty Dunham said. “He said, ‘OK thank you for saying that,’ and continued on saying that, ‘ Well, we’re going to proceed with an administration withdraw .’”

Pastor Jesse Latta later explained to Action News Jax’s Meghan Moriarty that the assignment was “innocent,” but “out of an abundance of caution and for there to be no misunderstandings, our administration has removed this particular assignment for any future use.”

That’s the right move. It actually shows the Dunhams had a legitimate complaint. So why the hell was their child kicked out of school?

The whole incident is a microcosm of Christianity’s treatment of sexual abuse: A girl bravely said she was uncomfortable with what an adult was doing, and the church’s response was to punish the girl, not the adult.

It would have been so easy to take care of this problem, but the school’s reaction was to double down on the assignment until the media attention made that impossible, then they took their wrath out on the family, leaving them scrambling to find a new school and forcing the child to make new friends after the school year has already begun.

The family is worse off because they enrolled their kid in a Christian school. Thank goodness they’re sharing their story publicly so everyone else can understand how messed up these kinds of schools can be.

Parents concerned after students were asked to send picture of them doing homework in the bath

Parents concerned after students were asked to send picture of them doing homework in the bath

Students at victory christian academy in jacksonville, florida, were asked to send a photo of them completing homework in the bath.

The parents of a second-grader in America have spoken out about a homework task they felt was ‘not appropriate’ for children, claiming their daughter has now also been withdrawn by the school following the backlash.

Misty and Christopher Dunham were shocked when they saw what their eight-year-old had been asked to do as part of a homework task.

Second-grade students at Victory Christian Academy in Jacksonville, Florida , were given a list of challenges to complete, including practicing ‘Psalm 24: 1-2 with an adult’ three times, reading ‘Fun with Friends pg. 112-113', and working on spelling, arithmetic and phonics for tests.

Misty Dunham.

However, there was one instruction that ‘didn’t sit right’ with the Dunhams, as their daughter Mackenzie was asked: “Send a picture of you doing reading homework in the bathtub.”

Speaking to Action News Jax , Misty said: “I emailed the teacher ‘Hey, you may want to explain that. Send something out to the parents. Let them know what the intentions are.’ This just does not sound OK.

“She did send out a message saying, ‘you should be in pajamas, be in your uniform, have fun with it.’ But, it didn’t sit right.”

The homework assignments.

The mother contacted the school administration and, later, the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office to express her concerns.

She said she then received a call from a staff member at the school, recalling: “[He said] ‘I think you guys should do a parental withdrawal for the child.’ I said, ‘I can’t. I can’t do that. We refuse to withdraw her.’

“He said, ‘OK thank you for saying that,’ and continued on saying that, ‘Well, we’re going to proceed with an administration withdraw.’”

According to Action News Jax, documentation from the school shows the Dunhams’ daughter is no longer a student enrolled there, with Misty saying they were offered ‘no explanation’.

Dad Christopher added: “She did something right by telling mom and dad that she wasn’t comfortable with something, and now she’s no longer in school."

Their daughter is no longer at the school.

Pastor Jesse Latta, President of Victory Christian Academy, told the outlet in a statement: “There was an assignment given, as I understand you have received a copy. It was taken out of an online teacher resource and has been used in many schools.

“There were certainly no bad intentions with this assignment. When a parent contacted our teacher with a complaint, our teacher immediately sent out correspondence to all parents in the class to assure them that there were no bad intentions with this assignment and to clarify the guidelines. No additional concerns were presented to the teacher. While the assignment was completely innocent, out of an abundance of caution and for there to be no misunderstandings, our administration has removed this particular assignment for any future use.

“We value our children and their safety is our top priority. We will continue to serve the children and families in which the Lord has graciously allowed us to have a part in their lives.”

Action News Jax said the school was asked about the status of the student, and why there was an ‘administrative withdraw’, but that it had ‘not heard back’.

Christian school wants photos of 8-year-olds 'in bathtub' — fights dirty when parents object

'we have been sending this homework assignment for years, and you’re the only one complaining about it'.

An 8-year-old student at Victory Christian Academy in Jacksonville, Florida, was "administratively withdrawn" from school after her parents objected to a homework assignment instructing second-graders to “send picture of you doing reading homework in bathtub,” reported parents Misty and Christopher Dunham.

Christopher told CBS-47 that he and his wife were shocked when their 8-year-old said she needed to send a picture of herself in the bathtub doing her reading homework to her second-grade teacher.

"I emailed the teacher [to say] 'Hey, you may want to explain that. Send something out to the parents. Let them know what the intentions are.' This just does not sound OK," Misty explained.

Though the teacher responded by adding that students could "be in pajamas, be in your uniform, have fun with it," something about the assignment still "didn’t sit right," Misty explained. So she reached out to the school administrators, who claimed that “we have been sending this homework assignment for years, and you’re the only one complaining about it."

Soon after, a school administrator called to encourage the Dunhams to "do a parental withdrawal for the child." When Misty refused to withdraw her daughter, the administrator said the school was "going to proceed with an administration withdraw."

CBS-47 reported that school documentation indicates that the Dunhams' daughter is "no longer a student at Victory Christian Academy."

On "The News & Why It Matters ," BlazeTV host Sara Gonzales and guests Matthew Marsden, Tayler Hansen, and John Doyle discussed the strange homework assignment and the Christian school's draconian reaction when parents raised objections.

"Just because they say it's a Christian academy doesn't mean that it is," Marsden warned. "You don't do this ... the internet is forever. You take a picture like that, it's out there forever. This is just so weird ... it's just a head-scratcher. Is this where we are in America? This is, it's evil," he added.

Local Woman Speaks Out About Past Abuse At Christian, Locked-Down Facility, Starts Group To Raise Awareness

I was at this school – It was the worst time of my life! I ran across this article and many others this morning because I’m visiting San Diego and some repressed memories surfaced. I am so happy to have found this and other articles and YouTube from other girls who survived. I plan on reaching out to all of you Thank tmyoi for taking the time to write this.

I too attended this “school” in 1989 for 6 months and it was also the worst time in my life. I still deal with the effects of the abuse I suffered at the hands of Mike Palmer (narcissist sociopath) and his staff.. it was the most cruel environment I have ever been forced to live in. I feel for anyone who has spent any time there as no doubt any problems they had prior to entering were most certainly compounded by the daily abuse and torture that we all suffered during our time there. I hope that man is rotting somewhere… and hope someday he actually has to be accountable for his fraud and abuse. This is why licensing is crucial to help to ensure the physical and metal safety of children in their care. I’m 50 now and rarely a day goes by a memory doesn’t pop in my head. I have anxiety and other issues directly relating with being abandoned at a school run by religious zealots and uneducated sociopaths. Im thankful for a community that has had the courage to speak out and help facilitate healing.

I was at VCA in 1987. I never saw any kind of sexual abuse or emotional abuse. The rules were strict, but consistent, and students broke rules all of the time behind the staffs backs. We were not perfect angels and for some of us, this school provided safety from what some of us experienced in our own home life. I know plenty of graduates like me that embraced the program and have zero complaints. And for some others, the opposite. So how is this possible? Some of us actually worked on ourselves while others fought with nothing but a bad attitude. In Romona, we even had an adult who joined our program because she saw something different in her own sister who was in attendance. The younger one left the school and was murdered a short time after by a boyfriend that she decided to go back with, while her adult sister graduated and had a successful life after exit. It’s all about choices. Some of us made the program work for us, while others chose to fight and rebel. I was barely 13 when I entered the program and spent 1 year and 9 months at the academy. Not once did I ever see any of the pastors engage in any kind of sexual abuse or even sexual language with any of us girls. The food was good and healthy, but e never were without heat or air conditioning. What some girls may reference as manual labor, was simply chores. We were never given a task that we could not handle. As far as the “lack of education”, I tested 4 years behind when I entered the academy and when I left, I was beyond my grade level. I made up 4 years of education in 1 year of time. Today I sit as a successful paralegal with zero criminal history, I’m 48. Don’t believe everything you hear about this school being a torture chamber. Some students chose to remain with no empathy and no integrity. Their choice. Mike Palmer saved my life by giving me a solid foundation that I could build off of when exiting back into the “real world “. Shame on all of these women who never grabbed a true success story for themselves, but instead chose to lie and ruin things for the rest of us. And the GR room was plain and bare for a reason. It was a room where you couldn’t hang yourself or participate in self harm, not a torture chamber. To the women that lie about VCA, maybe you were just to much in denial to the destructive lifestyle that brought you there. God does know what happened to the hearts of a lot of us and God also knows the liars. Good luck with all of that. Thank you Mike Palmer for caring about our struggling youth. Some of us came from parents with severe mental illness who should have never had kids in the first place. Victory was home for me and I did gain the victory.

Hi, I just came across this. I was there as well. I don’t remember the names of the girls. I still have my Bible from Brother McElvain after he lead me to the Lord. ❤️🙏🏼

Omg finally. I’m – Survivor. I must have more information. I’ve waited my whole life to find you. I need to connect with some of the girls who were there with me. Wish I could leave my name. This may help heal my heart. I was 14 years old

I am looking for a friend I was there with. Her name is Tricia Durham. I lost contact. I was there in 1986. Can anyone help me out?

2nd grader kicked out of school after parents' outrage over bathtub picture assignment

by ZACHARY ROGERS | The National Desk

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (TND) — After her parents refused to comply with a homework assignment that asked students to "send picture of you doing reading homework in bathtub," a second grader in Florida has been reportedly removed from her school.

The girl attended Victory Christian Academy in Florida, according to WJAX News , and her parents were "shocked" to see the question written on their 8-year-old's homework.

A bathtub is not appropriate for a child to take a picture," Misty Dunham, the child's mother, reportedly said. "I emailed the teacher ‘Hey, you may want to explain that. Send something out to the parents. Let them know what the intentions are.’ This just does not sound OK.

According to Dunham, the teacher complied and sent out a message, but the assignment still didn't "sit right" with the young girl's parents.

She did send out a message saying, ‘you should be in pajamas, be in your uniform, have fun with it.’ But, it didn’t sit right," Dunham told WJAX News.

The Dunhams then reportedly reached out to the school's administration and their local police. The school told the concerned parents that "we have been sending this homework assignment for years, and you’re the only one complaining about it," according to MEAWW News , which added that police advised the parents not to take a photo of their child in a bathtub and send it to the school as the assignment requested.

The young girl's parents filed a report with the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office following their interactions with the school. Later, a school administrator reportedly contacted the family and suggested they withdraw their daughter from the school.

I said, ‘I can’t. I can’t do that. We refuse to withdraw her,’” Dunham recounted to WJAX News. “He said, ‘OK thank you for saying that,’ and continued on saying that, ‘Well, we’re going to proceed with an administration withdraw.’”

As a result, the 8-year-old girl is now no longer enrolled at Victory Christian Academy, according to MEAWW News. Her parents are reportedly upset at the lack of explanation for the school's decision to kick their daughter out.

She did something right by telling mom and dad that she wasn’t comfortable with something, and now she’s no longer in school," Christopher Dunham, the young girl's father, told WJAX News.

President of the school and pastor of Victory Baptist Church Jesse Latta said in a statement to WJAX News that the assignment has been "removed from future use," but he reportedly did not comment on the student's withdraw from the school.

When a parent contacted our teacher with a complaint, our teacher immediately sent out correspondence to all parents in the class to assure them that there were no bad intentions with this assignment and to clarify the guidelines," Latta reportedly said. "No additional concerns were presented to the teacher."
While the assignment was completely innocent, out of an abundance of caution and for there to be no misunderstandings, our administration has removed this particular assignment for any future use," Latta continued in his statement. "We value our children and their safety is our top priority. We will continue to serve the children and families in which the Lord has graciously allowed us to have a part in their lives."

The Dunham family reportedly believes the school kicking out their daughter "sends the wrong message," according to WJAX News.

The National Desk reached out to Victory Christian Academy seeking comment, but did not hear back before publication.

Parents: Florida 2nd grader instructed to ‘send picture doing reading homework in bathtub’

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — The parents of a Florida second-grader said their child was withdrawn from school after they questioned an assignment in which their daughter was instructed to “send a picture of you doing reading homework in the bathtub.”

>> Read more trending news

Misty Dunham and her husband Christopher, of Jacksonville, said they were surprised when students at Victory Christian Academy received the request among other assignments, which included practicing “Psalm 24: 1-2 with an adult” three times, reading “Fun With Friends,” and practicing spelling, arithmetic and phonics ahead of future tests, WJAX-TV reported.

“A bathtub is not appropriate for a child to take a picture,” Dunham told the television station.

A second-grade student was removed from the classroom after her parents questioned a homework assignment. https://t.co/RpnadsVsUl — ActionNewsJax (@ActionNewsJax) September 22, 2022

Dunham said she emailed her 8-year-old’s teacher for clarification.

“I emailed the teacher, ‘Hey, you may want to explain that. Send something out to the parents. Let them know what the intentions are.’ This just does not sound OK,” Dunham told WJAX . “She did send out a message saying, ‘You should be in pajamas, be in your uniform, have fun with it.’ But, it didn’t sit right.”

Dunham said that she contacted school administrators and the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office to document the incident.

A police report obtained by WJAX stated that the Dunhams were told by administrators, “We have been sending this homework assignment for years, and you’re the only one complaining about it.”

Police advised the parents not to take the photo, according to the television station.

Later, the Dunhams said they received a call from Victory Christian Academy.

“(He said), ‘I think you guys should do a parental withdrawal for the child.’ I said, ‘I can’t. I can’t do that. We refuse to withdraw her,” Dunham told WJAX . “He said, ‘OK thank you for saying that,’ and continued on saying that ‘Well, we’re going to proceed with an administration withdraw.’”

Documentation from the school indicates the Dunhams’ daughter is no longer a student at Victory Christian Academy.

No additional concerns were presented to the teacher.

“While the assignment was completely innocent, out of an abundance of caution and for there to be no misunderstandings, our administration has removed this particular assignment for any future use,” Latta added. “We value our children and their safety is our top priority. We will continue to serve the children and families in which the Lord has graciously allowed us to have a part in their lives.”

Latta did not address the student’s withdrawal from the school, WJAX reported.
