Prince movie review: Sivakarthikeyan's charm makes this silly, quirky comedy fun

Prince movie review: sivakarthikeyan's charm and his chemistry with sathyaraj elevate this quirky but silly comedy to a fun watch..

Sivakarthikeyan ’s Prince could be described as an experimental comedy film. I use the word experimental because it isn’t wholesomely entertaining as some of his other films but at the same time it works as a quirky attempt at bringing forth a different style of humour. You could even call it silly humour, which worked beautifully in Anudeep’s last film, Jathi Ratnalu. In Prince, too, it works to a large extent and that’s what makes the comedy refreshing, if not wildly entertaining. The film works when you don’t take it seriously. Also read: Don review: Sivakarthikeyan’s film is a predictable but likeable coming-of-age drama

Prince is a romantic comedy that stars Sivakarthikeyan and Maria Riaboshapka.

The plot is simple. It’s about a Tamil boy (Sivakarthikeyan plays Anbu) from a fictional village near Pondicherry falling in love with a British girl (Maria plays Jessica). Sathyaraj plays Anbu’s father (Ulaganathan) and he’s a staunch anti-casteist, who wants his son to marry outside their caste. When Anbu, a social science teacher, falls in love with his colleague Jessica (British), an English teacher, he hopes that his father would be proud of him to fall in love with someone from a different country altogether. Instead of extending his support for their love, Ulaganathan opposes the idea because his father was killed by the British during the independence struggle. Therefore, he doesn’t want someone from that country in his family.

The film relies a lot on quirky one-liners and wordplay. Anudeep’s style of comedy is not everyone’s cup of tea. If you loved what he did with Jathi Ratnalu, Prince won’t disappoint you. Even though the film is not consistently as funny as Jathi Ratnalu, the jokes do work wherever they’re used.

Nobody else but Sivakarthikeyan could’ve made Prince work to this extent. He holds the film together with his charming screen presence and his knack of doing comedy is unmatchable. Sathyaraj is equally good as the father and complements Sivakarthikeyan well in so many scenes. The chemistry between them really comes alive on the screen and it’s a treat to watch.

Prince, as the promos promised, ends up as a harmless romantic comedy. The comedy stretches work and generate ample laughs to keep you invested. The dull stretches do serve as a roadblock in an otherwise breezy story that touches upon the theme of fake nationalism.

Cast: Sivakarthikeyan, Sathyaraj and Maria Riaboshapka

PRINCE MOVIE REVIEW CLICK TO RATE THE MOVIE

Prince is a romantic comedy film written and directed by Anudeep KV and produced by Suniel Narang, Suresh Babu and Puskur Ram Mohan Rao under the banner Suresh Productions. The film has Sivakarthikeyan, Sathyaraj and Maria Riaboshapka in the lead roles while Premgi Amaren, Sathish Krishnan, Prankster Rahul, Bhaarath and others play supporting roles. The film has music by Thaman and cinematography by Manoj Paramahansa.

Anbu (played by Sivakarthikeyan) is a social science teacher for a mid-grade school in Pondicherry and falls in love with Jessica (Maria Riaboshapka), an english teacher but the entire village is against their love because she's from a British origin. On the other side, Premgi plays the role of a cunning real estate person who grabs the land of people. What does this have to do with Anbu's romance and how Anbu deals with this problem and the conservative villagers form the rest of the plot.

The biggest positive of the film is Sivakarthikeyan's terrific expressions and his dance has also improved tremendously. His natural timing and chemistry with co-actors elevates the comedy scenes really well. Maria Ryaboshapka does what is expected of her. Among the supporting cast, Sathyaraj holds every scene he appears in with great control.

It is well known from his previous films that director Anudeep KV can handle humour extremely well and has a niche sense of comedy. His characters are usually innocent and realise the gravity of the situation very late. This innocence is where the comedy is derived from, and the same is the case with Prince as well.

Anudeep's sense of humour is niche. But a set of audience might not relate to this brand of comedy. At the same time, the nature of jokes and the plot are predictable. The initial school portion and the climax comedies work better. For instance, one of the killer lines is a voice over introducing Sathyaraj. The voice over goes, "Ivaru dhan enga appa, vayasula moothavaru" (meaning - He's my father, he's older than me).

However the issue with Prince is that the film leaves the story hanging just to get that extra laugh or clap. Till the interval, the film either moves at superfast pace or lags heavily. This means the scenes progress really fast and then stagnate for the next few minutes, but saved by consistent one-liner comedies that keep you entertained.

Overall, the writing of the film could have been better, which would have made the actors performances even better. The characters needed better sketching, but the clean nature of content will certainly entertain the family audiences and could also end up as a perfect Diwali treat.

Prince Movie Review (2022)

Anudeep kv's 'prince', with sivakarthikeyan and maria ryaboshapka, applies the 'jathi ratnalu' formula to a love story and falls flat.

Prince Movie Review in English

Prince Movie Cast & Crew

Anudeep KV's USP is silliness. In Jathi Ratnalu , he roped in three actors: Naveen Polishetty, Priyadarshi and Rahul Ramakrishna. And he used these actors as punching bags for his brand of brilliantly nonsensical one-liners. I took some time to warm up to the film, but once I got on its wavelength, it became a blast. Anudeep treats silly situations in a silly way. He also treats serious situations in a silly way. Even when we think we are in for major melodrama, he keeps undercutting the mood with humour. He goes for the same approach in Prince , but this time, it doesn't work. Why? The first reason may be Sivakarthikeyan. This is right up the actor's zone and he is excellent, but he is also too big a star. This film may have worked for him before Kedi Billa Killadi Ranga , but today, after his rapid ascent to the top, we expect something a little… substantial, something big-screen worthy.

That, sadly, happens only during the songs by Thaman, which are grandly staged. Otherwise, the film is an oddly small, TV-level affair. (Again, with a smaller actor at the centre, it might not have seemed so small.) And we come to the second reason Prince doesn't work. In Jathi Ratnalu , Anudeep's anything-goes sensibility was a perfect fit for an anything-goes story. Here, the story is actually about something – or many things. It's about the irrelevance of caste and borders between countries. It's about the importance of humanity, which is possibly why the Sivakarthikeyan character is named Anbu. It's about how the British still own Indian soil – or land. And it's about Anbu falling for a Brit named Jessica, and played by Maria Ryaboshapka. This romance is opposed by Anbu's father (Sathyaraj) because of, well, what the Brits did on Indian soil.

What surprised me – and not in a good way – was the earnestness with which Anudeep approaches these issues and messages. In a film with this tonality, who wants to hear (from Jessica) that the British left behind a legacy of good things, too? Who wants a borderline-serious subplot with Premgi Amaren as a shady real-estate dealer? Why inflate the self-importance of a meant-to-be-silly film with key events taking place on January 26 and August 15? Why get all melodramatic with the Sathyaraj character in the second half? Yes, a lot of this is intercut with silly lines – in the spirit of the overall film – but this technique doesn't always work.

The stretch with guest star Soori is a bomb. A bit woven around Charlie Chaplin is a bomb. A potential fight scene in a sports bar is a bomb. The flashback with Jessica's grandmother is a serious bomb. The strange characterisation of her father is a bomb. Jessica's "boy bestie" gag is a bomb. At one point, she asks Anbu why he loves her. Good question. The script is too lazy to think up an answer.

Prince is a chain link of missed opportunity after missed opportunity. Even the slapstick fight is not as slapsticky as it should be. I loved the sudden appearance of a cactus plant, but it doesn't do anything as crazy as it sounds. What's not bad? There's a not-bad sequence with Anandraj as a cop. There's a Monty Python-esque stretch (or Goundamani-Senthil-esque strech) about a vegetable. And like in Jathi Ratnalu , the hero gets to make a big, rousing speech that's filled with funny, nonsensical touches. This portion is the only one where the issues and the silliness come together organically, and the tricky mix is beautifully handled by the writing. And I loved the hero-entry scene. You think it's going to be one thing. It cleverly becomes something else – and you can't imagine anyone but Sivakarthikeyan pulling this off. But Prince is proof that likeability on screen is not enough to make a movie.

Prince Movie Review: A reasonably effective mindless comedy

Rating: ( 2.5 / 5).

Remember Mirchi Shiva's intro scene in Thamizh Padam 2 where he goes on a monologue about many things random? Did it make you laugh? Or did it make you roll your eyes? If it worked for you, you are in for a ride with Prince , which is a marathon of such humour. Is it unfair to judge a film based on the efficiency of one element? Perhaps not, considering this is the main takeaway of this film.

Director: Anudeep KV Cast: Sivakarthikeyan, Maria Riaboshapka, Sathyaraj

The humour won't come across as a shocker to those who have watched Anudeep's sophomore feature, Jathi Ratnalu . Be it the naivete in romance, the over-enthusiastic body language, or even the floral print shirts, it is hard not to notice similarities between Sivakarthikeyan's Anbu and Naveen Polisehetty's Jogipet Srikanth.

The plot of Prince is generic and predictable. A Tamil boy from a family of British haters falls in love with a... Britisher! And naturally, a series of crazy events prevent them from getting together. Another film with a story like this--and an uninspiring screenplay--might have sunk without trace, but he tremendous focus on nonsensical humour keeps Prince afloat.

The non-stop jokes, however, don't always land as intended. A number of attempts do fall flat but not so much that the good parts get affected. When Sathyaraj's wife anxiously asks him, "Ungalukku enna dhaan venum?" , he replies, "Nee inga irundhu ponum!" Whenever the film shifts to this rhyme zone, the jokes fail. But a few minutes into the film, I became kinder, as the outlandish portions are brilliant. A case in point is the whole sequence involving a bottle gourd.

For 'mokkai' comedy to work, listeners must get used to context and the identity of the person cracking the jokes. This is why inside jokes among friends work, and why it feels absurd for outsiders. It also helps when celebrated stars (Sivakarthikeyan and Sathyaraj) are cast humour. I really doubt if Prince would have been as efficient if not for these two actors. But sadly, the same can't be said about the rest. Even though Maria gets the lip-sync game almost right, her performance feels right out of a highschool drama. Premgi Amaren, in a non-Venkat Prabhu film, once again doesn't work.

As long as the gags keep coming, we remain distracted from the criminally under-written screenplay and lacklustre staging. But the flaws become extremely glaring when the film focusses, for instance, on the romance. The story is stagnant, and interesting angles--like Jessica (Maria) asking Anbu why he falls for her--are not explored well.

Anudeep cleverly saves the best humour for the last act. The extended farewell speech of Anbu revives the film from a painful second act. Without giving away much, this last speech of Prince is absurdity in its most tasteful form.

The title Prince doesn't bear much relevance to the actual film, except as a tribute to its star actor. Had Anudeep stuck to just mindless fun, without getting distracted by angles like the bland romance, this Prince might have won everyone's heart.

Prince Movie Review: Sivakarthikeyan and Anudeep’s madcap flick offers sporadic laughs

Director anudeep’s prince is a madcap comedy that relies on silliness. the slapstick comedy worked in some places, but fell flat in others, says our review..

Listen to Story

prince tamil movie review

  • Prince hit the theatres on October 21 ahead of Diwali.
  • The comedy film is directed by Anudeep.
  • Prince features Sivakarthikeyan, Sathyaraj and Maria Ryaboshapka.

Release Date: 21 Oct, 2022

Sivakarthikeyan started his career as a stand-up comedian and rose to prominence with his witty one-liners. Today, he is a bankable star in the Tamil industry, who has several hit films under his sleeve. When a star like Sivakarthikeyen joins hands with Telugu filmmaker Anudeep, who is known for his slapstick humour, you expect fireworks on screen. Did their film, Prince, offer that?

Anbu (Sivakarthikeyan) is being ostracized by the village for a ‘mistake.’ His father Ulaganathan (Sathyaraj) also agrees with the villagers and gets ready to disown his son. Now comes the flashback. Anbu, who is irregular as a school teacher, goes to school regularly because of a British woman, Jessica (Maria Ryaboshapka). She joins the institution as a teacher. He eventually falls in love with her. While he thinks his father will say yes to their marriage, he says no for a reason. Ulaganathan’s father died in the freedom fight against the Britishers. How will Anbu convince his father and his father-in-law forms the story.

Anudeep’s strength lies in slapstick humour. With the films he has directed, he has established his style of humour which rides on silliness. And Prince is no exception. The film establishes several silly moments and tries to milk humour out of them. Imagine an entire stretch of comedy, just a ‘bottle guard’ that the heroine, Jessica, asks.

Prince, however, offers only sporadic laughs. This madcap film makes you laugh out loud in places but also falls flat on its face several times. Not all one-liners and jokes landed well. The first half of Prince borrowed a lot of the audience’s time to take off. One can handpick moments from the film where the comedy worked. Be it the Anandraj police station scene or the climax stretch about humanity, you see Sivakarthikeyan in full form. Even Sathyaraj is exceptional as the quirky father. Their combination scenes, especially the scene where he’s asked the meaning of Gummuratappura, are funny.

Also, Prince is a self-aware film. The director and the actors make fun of themselves and their previous works and it’s done supportively. That said, the major grouse with Prince are the stretches where the comedy fails to evoke laughs.

Here's the trailer of Prince:

Sivakarthikeyan is in his prime form as Anbu in Prince. His expressions and one-liners are perfect for the situation. And we can literally see the real Sivakarthikeyan playing to his strength on screen. Sathyaraj, as a veteran, explores comedy to a large extent in this film. Maria did a fair job in her debut performance. The real surprise is Premgi Amaren who played the role of land-grabbing mafia head, Boopathy. The audiences are so used to seeing Premgi Amaren in a fun role and to see him playing a serious (to some extent) was a new experience altogether.

Thaman’s music, especially Bimbiiki Pilapi and Jessica, are picturised well by Manoj Paramahamsa. Extra points for Sivakarthikeyan and Maria’s energetic dance moves.

Prince is a madcap comedy that tries to make the audience laugh throughout its runtime. But, you get only occasional laughs in the latter half.

5 Reasons to watch Sivakarthikeyan's Prince

Prince starring Sivakarthikeyan in the lead is all set to hit theater screens this Diwali on October 21, 2022 and here are five quick reasons to watch the movie:

  • Genre : Prince is a romantic comedy that is aimed at family audience and comes across as the perfect light-hearted entertainment for the holiday season.
  • Fresh/ Promising Aspects : While Sivakarthikeyan provides the familiarity in Prince , he is paired alongside a newcomer co-lead Maria Ryaboshapka. The actor has also been directed for the first time by Anudeep  KV, who has etched a name for himself in the Telugu film industry with movies like Jathi  Ratnalu (2021) and Pitta Goda (2016).
  • Story : Intercultural romance between two people from different countries is the crux of Prince and the teasers and trailers released so far indicates that the movie will be rooting for unison, at a time when the world couldn't be more divided.
  • Jessica Song : SS Thaman has composed music for Prince and Jessica is a viral number, that is also sung by Thaman. Sivakarthikeyan's foot-work became a talking point from the glimpse people got in the song's lyric video , and his upgraded dance skills warrant a watch on the big screens.
  • Sivakarthikeyan : Prince is the actor's third consecutive release after two back to back hits Doctor (2021) and Don earlier this year. The movie seems like another promising outing for his target audience.

Prince, Monster, Sardar movie release and LIVE UPDATES: Karthi’s Sardar takes lead in the Diwali clash with Sivakarthikeyan and Mohanlal’s films

Two of tamil film industry’s most happening heroes - karthi and sivakarthikeyan - are clashing at the box office..

prince tamil movie review

2022 Diwali does not have a release from top actors like Rajinikanth, Vijay, Ajith and Kamal Haasan, but it is still interesting as this time the box office clash is between two of the most-happening stars of the Tamil film industry – Karthi and Sivakarthikeyan.

On the one hand, you have Karthi, who is having a great year with back-to-back hits. In August, he rolled out Viruman, which despite mixed reviews, ended up as a commercial success retaining the core audience he has developed since his debut Paruthiveeran. He then had the biggest release in his career – Ponniyin Selvan 1, which is continuing its dream run at the box office. His character Vallavarayan Vandhiyathevan ended up being a fan favourite. Even as the film is inching towards the Rs 475 crore mark, Karthi is coming out with Sardar, which will compete with his own film. That pretty much is enough to show what a year Karthi has been having. If Sardar, which is touted to be a ‘full meal’, strikes a chord with the audience, it would be a level-up for Karthi.

prince tamil movie review

Sardar has Karthi in a dual role. Other than Karthi, it stars Rashi Khanna, Rajisha Vijayan, Chunky Panday, and Laila. Speaking to Indian Express , Sadar director PS Mithran said, “Come, have a full meal. We have everything: things you have seen before, things you haven’t seen before, old things in a different dimension. The film has got it all.” Looks like Karthi’s film will be a palatable affair that will entice all.

However, he is competing with the most-bankable star of Kollywood currently – Sivakarthikeyan , who has churned out one of the biggest hits of this year, Don. On top of that, Prince is directed by Anudeep of Jaathi Rathnalu fame, which gives the movie a chance in the Telugu market as well. The only downside Siva has, for now, is the underwhelming trailer of Prince, which has not worked in favor of the film. It has to be seen whether Anudeep’s brand of comedy, which worked well with the Telugu audience, would strike a chord in Tamil Nadu .

As far as the genre goes, Prince is starkly opposite to Sardar. While Karthi is coming out with a high-concept thriller, Sivakarthikeyan’s film is a simple comedy about a Tamil guy falling in love with a Brit woman, who happens to be his colleague in a school. It has Ukranian actress Maria playing the female lead.

All said and done, since it’s Diwali, there’s enough room for two films to co-exist as we are looking at a long holiday week. On top of that, healthy competition is also a good spectacle to watch like a movie.

Follow all the latest updates about Sivakarthikeyan's Prince, Karthi's Sardar and Mohanlal's Monster.

Trade analyst Ramesh Bala gave a positive feedback to Karthi starrer Sardar, which releasd on Friday. The film is said to revolved around the issue of water mafia with Karthi playing a power-packed role.

#Sardar [3.5/5] : Kid #RituRocks is good.. Fantastic BGM score by @gvprakash Dir @Psmithran has done good research and made an enjoyable action entertainer.. A Winner! ? — Ramesh Bala (@rameshlaus) October 21, 2022

The brain of Anudeep must be an exciting place. It is hard to articulate his sense of comedy, and harder to come up with things like how Anbu’s voiceover introduces his father Ulaganathan (Sathyaraj): “Ivar thaan enga appa. Enna vida moothavaru (This is my dad. He is older than me).”   READ MORE

The makers of Karthi starrer Sardar are using drones to promote the movie.

In Mollywood too, we have a Sardar. While Karthi seems to be just carrying the name, Mohanlal is embodying the meaning in his upcoming crime thriller, Monster. The film has brought together the blockbuster Pulimurugan combo – Mohanlal and director Vysakh. It also has Pulimurugan writer, Udaykrishnan, as part of the crew. The decent trailer promises a typical murder mystery. With no big competition at the box office, it might turn out to be a piece of cake for Mohanlal this Diwali.

Star Movie Review: ‘

Star Movie Review: ‘

‘A Prince’ Review: Let New Passions Bloom

Sex, death and domination fuel this beautifully enigmatic pastoral drama from France, which presents the gay coming-of-age of an apprentice gardener.

  • Share full article

Two men embrace and kiss in the woods.

By Beatrice Loayza

It’s not immediately apparent how courtly intrigue figures in “A Prince,” Pierre Creton’s spellbinding French pastoral drama, though sex, death and domination hang palpably in the film’s crisp, Normandy air.

Creton, a veteran director working at the margins of France’s film industry, looks to the divine powers and chivalric codes that fuel swords-and-shields epics like “Game of Thrones,” but whittles these elements down to a mysterious essence. A subtly medieval score — distinguished by the thrum of a lute and composed by Jozef van Wissem — draws out a surreal dimension. Eventually, the film shifts into explicitly sexual and mythological terrain with a B.D.S.M. edge, and the score keeps pace, taking on a folk metal vibe.

The story is slippery by design, loosely tracking the gay coming-of-age of an apprentice gardener, Pierre-Joseph, played for the most part by Antoine Pirotte. Creton, who also works as a gardener in real life, plays the older version of Pierre-Joseph, so “A Prince” also reads as an autofictional memory piece.

Throughout the film, a series of wordless and seductively austere tableaux, Pierre- Joseph forms bonds with various individuals in his rural community. Multiple narrators, including Françoise Lebrun (“ The Mother and the Whore ”), speak in retrospect, as if looking back from the afterlife at the characters onscreen. These connections are tangled: for instance, Lebrun voices Françoise Brown (played by Manon Schaap), the head of a horticulture school. Yet Lebrun also plays the onscreen version of Pierre-Joseph’s mother.

The effect may seem frustrating at first, but it ultimately feeds into the kind of alternative, communal lifestyle that the film showcases so beautifully.

Pierre-Joseph eventually comes to form a throuple with Alberto (Vincent Barré) and Adrien (Pierre Barray), his mentors. The naked bodies of these much older gentleman appear suggestively weathered next to their younger lover’s sprightly form. Yet there is no mention of taboo. That passion could bloom in such spontaneous and unexpected forms is part of this enigmatic film’s potency.

A Prince Not rated. In French, with subtitles. Running time: 1 hour 22 minutes. In theaters.

An earlier version of this review misidentified an instrument used in the score. It was a lute, not a mandolin.

‘A Prince’ Review: A Literate Gay French Drama That Remains Much Too Oblique in the End

Pierre Creton’s dreamy experiment about the stories we tell others and ourselves remains more interesting as a concept than a finished film.

A Prince

The world of Pierre Creton ’s “ A Prince ” is lush and verdant. His protagonist is a gardener’s apprentice whose penchant for taming and nurturing the wilderness around him is only matched by the latent eroticism he finds in various older men he comes to be involved with. Mostly driven by voiceover narration meant to ground and disorient you in equal measure, “A Prince” is a study in the stories we keep from one another and the ones we tell ourselves. Creton’s vision of unruly desires in the French countryside is literate and oblique perhaps to a fault, its erotic sensibility feeling more intellectual than visceral.

Popular on Variety

That is certainly the case with Pierre-Joseph, who remains a cipher of a character throughout. In the scenes where he interacts with his classmates, his aging parent and later with his employer, Pirotte plays the young man like a wallflower whose shyness feels somewhat crippling. Yet his inner life, as captured by his voiceover narration, reveals a whole new layer to this seemingly quiet and unassuming young man.

“Sometimes I found my cousin there, and we made love,” he confesses when describing his father’s organized hunting trips, going on to share even more titillating details. Because of Pierre-Joseph’s narration, a seemingly innocuous moment shared between two men whose hands brush against one another as they sop up their bread on a shared plate, becomes weighted with desire. It’s in moments like those that Creton’s directorial choices most make sense, where it feels like he’s constantly excavating a not-so-hidden erotic sensibility.

Pierre-Joseph is drawn to older men, to their tender touch and their generous spirit. Soon, he develops a close-knit relationship with two of them, who in turn serve as fellow collaborators on a film about botany. Their quiet moments of intimacy blend in with their honest work in the fields and on their film together. Eventually, though, the film swerves into a final act where Pierre-Joseph will come face to face with Kutta. He’s heard plenty about the adopted child from abroad who is now an older man seemingly interested in hiring a gardener. Except as it soon becomes clear, this meeting will upend much of what we know about both men and even what we’ve come to expect about Creton’s oneiric if otherwise quite grounded drama.

Whether the one eyebrow raising shot Creton orchestrates in this final meeting merely shocks you or outright makes you wonder why this quiet if talky film needed to arrive at such an outlandish image is, arguably, what makes “A Prince” such a difficult project to break down. Beautifully shot and quite cleverly structured — not to mention quite naturalistic in its depiction of a pastoral world view (Schaap, who playes Françoise in the film, is a client of the filmmaker, whose garden Creton tends to) — “A Prince” demands to be experienced, to be enjoyed, for its shaggy narrative leaps and narrated morsels of insight to be nurtured not unlike the very horticulture which it so lovingly captures.

If it all doesn’t quite gel together in the end, one gets the feeling that such fissures are by design, and so they feel less like errors in judgment than intentional challenges Creton places squarely in front of his audience, beckoning them into a different kind of world, a different kind of film.

  15. Prince Movie Review: A reasonably effective mindless comedy

As long as the gags keep coming, we remain distracted from the criminally under-written screenplay and lacklustre staging.
