Free money first: grants and scholarships

You may be considering graduate school to further your education. But the high costs to attend grad school might make you think twice about committing to more classes. 

The good news is that grad students have plenty of options to cover those costs. However, the best options are funds you don't have to repay.

Research is key

Grants, scholarships, and fellowships are all forms of gift aid — meaning they allow you to fund grad school without having to pay the money back. 

In general, students who qualify for state or federal grants will access the funds by filling out the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). In contrast, scholarships are often targeted at specific groups, like athletes or women in STEM. Most scholarships require you to submit a unique application to share your qualifications for the award. 

Finally, fellowships are typically awarded by schools and other organizations to students on a merit basis. Many fellowships go beyond covering your tuition to provide a stipend for living expenses. 

"Utilizing grants, scholarships, and fellowships as financial aid options enables students to substantially minimize or even completely eradicate the necessity for student loans," says Trinity Owen, NFEC Certified Financial Education Instructor and owner of The Pay at Home Parent .  

As a graduate student, relying on grants, scholarships, and fellowships is better than taking out loans to pay for school. When you graduate from your program, repaying your student loans can have a substantial negative impact on your financial situation. Graduating without any debt — or with a smaller debt burden — can lead to a more comfortable life after graduation. 

The first step is to fill out the FAFSA. Depending on your financial situation, you may qualify for need-based financial aid. Even if you didn't qualify for this type of aid as an undergraduate, a change to your dependency status or a lower income could have a big impact on your access to gift aid. 

Merit-based 

Merit-based scholarships are often awarded for academic or other achievements, often pertaining to the field you're going into.

Subject-specific

Subject-specific fellowships are usually merit-based opportunities to study a particular subject. The length of a fellowship might range from a few months to several years. Typically, you'll get a stipend for living expenses on top of your tuition costs.

Paying for graduate school is often not as simple as finding a single grant to cover the entire cost. Instead, you might piece together smaller grants and scholarships to make your graduate school experience financially feasible. 

The reality is that any free money you obtain will have a positive impact on your financial future. Below we will explore how much you stand to save if your entire graduate education costs $50,000:

Employer tuition reimbursement

Many large companies offer educational assistance to their employees. While you might have to go to school at a different pace, getting through school debt-free might be worth it.

Graduate assistantships

Many graduate programs offer assistantships to their students. In exchange for teaching classes or conducting research, the school may waive your tuition and possibly provide a living stipend. You can find out more about these opportunities directly from the administrator of your program. 

Fellowships

Fellowships are usually merit-based opportunities to study a particular subject. The length of a fellowship might range from a few months to several years. Typically, you'll get a stipend for living expenses on top of your tuition costs. 

Start with the FAFSA

File the Free Application for Federal Student Aid, or FAFSA, to determine eligibility for federal loans and work-study. The FAFSA is a form that determines what types of student aid you qualify for. You'll need to provide various documents to determine how much financial aid you'll receive. 

Types of federal loans

Direct unsubsidized loans: With direct unsubsidized loans , you are responsible for the interest that accrues during all periods.

Direct PLUS loans (for graduate or professional students): A Direct PLUS Loan is the federal option for parent loans. PLUS stands for Parent Loan for Undergraduate Students. You can use them to pay for expenses not covered by other financial aid offered by your child's school.

You can find scholarships available through countless organizations targeted to specific groups. Consider using a scholarship search engine, like Big Future by College Board , to find opportunities.

Before committing to a loan, shop around for the best rates and repayment options — not all private loans are created equal. For borrowers with limited credit history or lower credit scores, consider having a cosigner on your loan .

TEACH grants

If you are planning to pursue a career in teaching, you can tap into up to $4,000 per year in grants. At the end of your education, you must teach in a high-need field as a full-time teacher at a school that serves low-income students for at least four years. If you don't meet the service obligation, the grant will be converted into a loan. 

Fulbright grants

Fulbright grants allow U.S. citizens to pursue graduate school abroad. 

State-sponsored grants

Many states offer grants to students based on financial need or to those pursuing education in a specific field. Your school's financial aid office can highlight any state-sponsored grants you may qualify for. 

Organizational grants

Many organizations offer grants to their members. If you or your family is part of an organization, find out if they have grants available for graduate students.

If you can't afford grad school, don't give up! Explore all options, consider part-time programs, or research schools with lower tuition.

Make sure you remain cautious of taking on too much debt. Borrow only what you need and research affordable programs.

Yes, there are some student loan forgiveness programs for graduate school, such as Public Service Loan Forgiveness (PSLF) and certain state-based programs.

Admission to msee & mscompe programs.

Every applicant must meet the minimum requirements given below. However, merely satisfying these requirements does not guarantee admission.

• The application window for Spring 2024 will be from August 1, 2023 to August 31, 2023.
• The application window for Fall 2024 will be from October 1, 2023 to February 1, 2024.

Admission to Classified Standing (Domestic):

Applicants must meet the following minimum requirements:

• Bachelor's degree in Electrical or Computer Engineering from an ABET accredited engineering program in the USA.
• A minimum grade point average of 2.85 (based on 4.0 scale) in the last 60 semester (90 quarter) units of technical course work.

Admission to Classified Standing (International):

International applicants must meet the following minimum requirements:

• Bachelor’s degree in Electrical, Electronics, Instrumentation or Computer Engineering from a recognized engineering program.
• An equivalent grade point average of 3.0 (based on 4.0 scale) or higher in all technical course work.
• A minimum TOEFL score of 85 or minimum IELTS score of 6.5. Please note that the minimum TOEFL score required by the program is higher than the minimum required score of the university.
• International applicants may submit an evaluation report from IERF, WES, or ECE for faster processing.

Graduate Record Examination (GRE)

GRE scores are not required.

Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL)

TOEFL or equivalent scores for the Spring 2024 and Fall 2024 admission cycles will be required .

Statement of Purpose (SOP)

The Electrical Engineering program does not require a Statement of Purpose (SOP) as it is not taken into consideration with making admission decisions. Please do not send an SOP.

Unofficial Transcripts and Letters of Recommendation (LOR)

Unofficial transcripts and one mandatory LOR are required for both the MSEE and MSCompE degree applicants. Applicants should upload their unofficial transcripts and LOR to Interfolio:

Please ensure that the LOR is submitted on an official letterhead of the organization that the referee is professionally affiliated with. The LOR should also have the referee’s official designation/rank in his/her organization. The referee should specify the capacity and duration for which he/she has known the applicant. The applicant’s first and last name along with the Red ID or EMPL ID (if possible) should be included in the letter. The letter can be uploaded in the form of a pdf file.

Submission of Official Documents

Submission of official documents, such as TOEFL score and official transcripts, need to be sent to the SDSU Graduate Admissions office. Documents sent to the department via email or regular mail/delivery services will not be accepted and will be discarded.

You must complete the Cal State Apply application and provide your official test scores and transcripts to the SDSU Graduate Admissions office (follow the instructions on Graduate Steps to Apply ).

Scholarships and Financial Support

A limited number of resident tuition waiver scholarships are available for new students. These scholarships are highly competitive. Students who want to be considered for these scholarships must submit their applications as soon as possible. Applications received after JANUARY 15th will not be considered for scholarships.

Other means of financial support are also available for our graduate students, including Teaching Assistantship and Grader positions. Most of our faculty are carrying out cutting-edge research; they hire students as Research Assistants (or provide Tuition Assistance) to work on their sponsored research projects.

Professional Career Opportunities

San Diego is home to many hi-tech companies in wireless communication and networks, VLSI, signal processing, RF/microwave and bio-technology. Many of our graduates are employed by these companies.

Graduate students have many opportunities to work as interns in these companies. The ECE Department allows graduate students in good academic standing to work as interns through the Curricular Practical Training (CPT) program.

Graduate students in the PhD programme of the School of Finance and Management study towards the University of London PhD.

To be considered for the PhD programme in finance or management students must already have completed a good Masters degree in a relevant discipline and been awarded high grades. They must also submit an initial research proposal that demonstrates aptitude for academic research.

The full-time PhD programme normally requires three years of study in London.

Chonnipha (jing jing) piriyalertsak will receive full funding to pursue a master’s degree in china studies at the yenching academy of peking university in beijing..

Chonnipha (Jing Jing) Piriyalertsak , a 2023 graduate of the University of Pennsylvania’s College of Arts and Sciences , has been selected as a 2024 Yenching Scholar with full funding to pursue an interdisciplinary master’s degree in China studies at the Yenching Academy of Peking University in Beijing.

Piriyalertsak is among the 106 scholars chosen from 39 countries and regions to enroll in the program in September. She is the seventh scholar affiliated with Penn to be awarded the scholarship since the program’s inception in 2015.

Piriyalertsak, who is from Bangkok, earned her bachelor’s degree in international relations with minors in classical studies, comparative literature, and history. She has worked at an intellectual property law firm in Bangkok, an artificial intelligence startup in Singapore, and a trade advocacy organization in Washington, D.C. At Yenching Academy, she will pursue a master of law in China studies (politics and international relations) with plans to research the intellectual history behind China’s foreign investment decision making and crisis management processes.

At Penn, Piriyalertsak was a Benjamin Franklin Scholar , and she received a 2022 Franklin Opportunity Fund award for working to bridge the gap between global policy and narrative writing. She was a Perry World House Student Fellow, conducting research on international technology regulations. She was a two-time recipient of the Perry World House Summer Grant and a 2021 winner of the Perry World House Undergraduate Essay Prize , for her essay on China’s hydropower activities in the Mekong River. She also was the co-editor-in-chief of the Pennsylvania Punch Bowl , Penn’s oldest satire magazine; the founder of @ir_unchained , a humor page about international relations; and a member of the Gryphon Senior Society.

SOAS University of London and National Law University Delhi (NLUD) in India have joined forces to offer a joint LLM/MA in Environmental Justice in South Asia, welcoming its first cohort of students this September.

The new joint LLM/MA in Environmental Justice in South Asia will, uniquely, be co-designed, co-delivered and co-awarded by both universities. Students will be able to carry out half of their studies at SOAS in London and the remainder of their studies at NLUD in Delhi.

The LLM/MA Environmental Justice in South Asia is a 1-year course located in the Global North and the Global South to explore critical environmental and climate change issues from the South-North perspective, while also providing students a rich learning opportunity to engage and learn directly from field exposure.

It provides a unique and transformative learning experience, which graduates of the course can bring to careers in research, policy studies and international non-governmental and governmental organisations. The course incorporates a core taught component, a clinical component and a dissertation.

During the course, students will:

• have the opportunity to undertake a programme aimed at exploring issues of environmental justice through the lens of South Asia;
• be jointly admitted to both institutions and have access to resources from both SOAS and NLUD throughout the programme;
• travel to the UK and India as part of the programme, with the first term spent at SOAS on campus and the second term spent at NLUD on campus, followed by a dissertation.

Why study the LLM/MA in Environmental Justice in South Asia?

The programme provides a unique specialisation in one of the most rapidly developing areas of law with special reference to South Asia. It offers students an option to study environmental law and its application and relevance to a broad range of areas with special reference to South Asia. The programme provides an opportunity to students to and apply learn tools of research methodology unique to environmental law along with an exposure to the field through a clinical component.

Structure of the degree and award

To be awarded the LLM/MA, students must take a mix of compulsory courses, electives courses and a dissertation. The programme structure shows which modules are compulsory and which are optional electives.

Upon completion of the programme, students will be jointly awarded an LLM/MA by both SOAS and NLUD.
