Sherni movie review: Amazing Vidya Balan anchors Amit Masurkar's ambitious Newton follow-up

Sherni movie review: vidya balan delivers an uncharacteristically understated performance in director amit masurkar's ambitious follow-up to newton..

Amit Masurkar walks into the woods and comes back with a good-to-great movie. That’s just how it works. On the way, he encounters radical-minded ruffians and bumbling ‘babus’. But a single scene in his films has more passion than the entire recent output of certain chiselled Bollywood heroes combined.

Like Masurkar’s breakout hit, Newton, his new film Sherni (out on Amazon Prime Video ) is part satire of Indian bureaucracy and part understated call to action. In Sherni, the filmmaker makes a case for conservation -- of animals, of nature, and most importantly, of our shared humanity.

Vidya Balan is uncharacteristically understated as the rookie Divisional Forest Officer (DFO) Vidya Vincent. She’s the no-nonsense type, going about her job with quiet efficiency, despite the reams of red-tape that she often finds herself tangled in. Not once does Balan break out her trademark guffaw; not once does the ‘sherni’ roar. This is a good thing.

Vidya Vincent is, however, somewhat of a Mary Sue -- a little too unblemished, especially considering the muck that's thrown at her. There is no problem that she cannot overcome by dishing out a calm talking-to. While her male colleagues are routinely harassed, and sometimes even physically manhandled, Vincent often gets her way by simply exuding confidence and trust — although even she, in her position of power, must deal with casual sexism on a daily basis.

Despite her qualifications, she’s an outsider, much like Ayushmann Khurrana’s Savarna saviour character in Article 15 — a film with which Sherni shares several themes.

Vincent’s authoritative aura comes in handy in some of the more hairy situations that she finds herself in. The villagers are angry. A tigress is on the rampage, killing their brothers and sisters every few days. Under pressure from his bosses, Vincent’s own boss, a woefully inept man played by Brijendra Kala, hires a hunter. Played by the human tree trunk Sharat Saxena, Pintu the hunter is hardly as harmless as his name suggests. He claims that he can spot a man-eating tiger by simply staring in its eyes.

Vincent, meanwhile, puts together an ad-hoc team of her own, comprising of a couple of low-ranking officials, and a local zoology professor, played by a remarkably restrained Vijay Raaz . The professor tries to explain to the villagers that it is in the nature of the beast to fend for itself; the tigress isn’t inherently evil, it’s merely hungry. But the walls are closing in; public pressure is mounting, and two local ‘vidhayaks’ named PK and GK have politicised the matter. Vincent and Pintu’s squads put their opposing strategies into practice and prevent further death.

Although the satirical elements in Sherni aren’t as pronounced as they were in Newton, Masurkar’s eye for absurdity is as sharp as ever. In one scene, Kala’s character discusses killing the tigress over some chai and pakoras. Like so many mid-level managers, he thinks having even the sketchiest grasp of English somehow makes him superior. In another, rather on-the-nose moment, Masurkar frames the man in a manner that the hunting trophy mounted on the wall behind him appears to give him horns.

Sherni is a cleverly veiled allegory for modern India. Never is this more clear than in an early scene, when a street play about peace, love and understanding is interrupted by a local politician spouting violent rhetoric. Granted, he’s talking about tigers. But is he? Misinformation spreads like wildfire among the villagers, and majoritarian blind faith overpowers facts.

What stands out in both Newton and Sherni is that there are processes in place — elaborate, carefully crafted processes put together by intelligent people — but they’ve been systematically uprooted by privilege, patriarchy and prejudice.

Sherni has a lot on its mind. Many might be expecting it to unleash a rebellious rallying cry, and there’s a real possibility that they are taken aback by the film’s relaxed pace. Others might be anticipating a stirring takedown of sexism — especially because of Balan’s casting in the central role — but Sherni addresses this theme in the most matter-of-fact manner, much like Vidya Vincent herself. The film’s ambitions are, instead, loftier. It would be presumptuous to call it ahead of its time, but Sherni’s true relevance will only be felt when our rivers dry out and our coasts are submerged. So maybe a decade?

Review: Charming and disarming, ‘Hit Man’ overcomes its own identity crisis

The nature of identity — essential questions of “Who am I?” and “Why am I the way I am?” — is the heady stuff of philosophy seminars and late-night self-realizations. In Richard Linklater’s new film, “Hit Man,” it is also the basis for a breezy comedy-romance crime story.

From his breakthrough “Slacker” to the more recent “Everybody Wants Some!!” Linklater has long had a knack for making films that seem to be inconsequential, lazy even, but that reveal themselves to have a sneaky depth, curiosity and insight into what it is to be alive. As he has gotten older, Linklater’s unassuming confidence as a filmmaker has become even sharper. Which is how something like “Hit Man,” which seems at first glance like a goof, also can consider some of the deepest mysteries of the human condition.

But even that is perhaps getting a little ahead of ourselves. The film is, first and foremost, a showcase for the powerful charisma, screen presence and chemistry of its two stars, Glen Powell and Adria Arjona. Powell co-wrote the screenplay with Linklater, based on a Texas Monthly article by Skip Hollandsworth, whose work also provided the basis for Linklater’s “Bernie.” Here Powell and Linklater use the real story of one Gary Johnson as a playful jumping-off point in a tale that starts out as someone needing a second job.

In this particular telling, Johnson (Powell) teaches psychology and philosophy at a small college in New Orleans, supplementing his quiet, isolated life by using his knack for technology to assist the local police department in running sting operations to capture people attempting to hire a hit man. (In the film and elsewhere, Linklater has strenuously made the far-fetched assertion that hit man is an occupation that does not actually exist.) One day circumstances find Gary stepping in as the faux assassin, and it turns out he has a knack for stagecraft.

So Gary begins to assume a series of personas tailored to each potential client, until he meets Madison ( Arjona), a meek woman seeking to free herself from her oppressive, possibly abusive husband. For her, Gary constructs Ron, a dashing, swaggering fellow with devil-may-care insouciance and a hint of real danger. (Imagine someone like, I don’t know, rising movie star Glen Powell, who has been equally at home in the action spectacle of “Top Gun: Maverick” and the rom-com silliness of “Anyone but You” and is soon to be seen in one of this summer’s blockbuster hopefuls, “Twisters.” )

Gary (as Ron) goes against protocol and convinces Madison to use the money she was going to spend to kill her husband and instead start a new life. Which she promptly does, taking up things her husband hates, such as volunteering at a pet rescue, letting her hair fall in loose, natural waves and wearing figure-hugging short skirts. And she reaches back out to Ron to thank him for setting her in the right direction.

Madison likes Ron. Gary likes Ron. Everybody seems to like Ron, and so Gary starts to adopt more of Ron into his own personality. Which only becomes more confusing as he — Gary, as Ron — starts to see more of Madison. They are both finally able to be the people they have always wanted to be, until things become complicated even further when her jerk of a soon-to-be ex-husband does indeed turn up dead.

It’s here that the movie’s own identity crisis comes into play. As it hints toward darker notions of what one is genuinely capable of and how you live with yourself afterward, the movie’s tone can’t sustain itself and the film lags as it dutifully plays out the curlicues of its plot mechanics. That is until it hits a showstopper scene — applause breaks have been reported from numerous festival screenings — in which Gary and Madison stage an argument between Madison and Ron for the sake of audio surveillance to prove their innocence while functioning on multiple levels of persona at once, saying one thing with their mouths while portraying something entirely different with their eyes and bodies. It’s the hottest thing in a movie that also features old-fashioned grown-up sex scenes.

Arjona matches Powell beat for beat in the scene and throughout the film. Her performance adds an additional layer of mystery in that it is never quite clear whether she is a manipulative femme fatale, a damsel in distress or a woman just trying to figure herself out. (Or maybe even all of those things.) While the movie may be further confirmation of Powell’s screen-star bona fides, Arjona should not be overlooked; this role hopefully will serve as a calling card for more leading roles.

Then there‘s a whole additional meta-textual layer to “Hit Man,” in that it is streaming on Netflix after a nominal, limited theatrical release. If one of the industry’s freshest, seemingly most bankable movie stars can’t get a proper full-scale release for a sexy crime-comedy, what is Hollywood even doing with itself?

And yet, regardless of where or how one sees it, “Hit Man” makes for an undeniable good time. Sometimes all you really need is a couple of impossibly attractive people enjoying each other’s company, captured by a filmmaker who knows when to stay out of their way. And if that’s not a movie, well, then, I don’t know what is.

'The Watchers' stops making sense after one too many surprise endings

If writer-director Ishana Night Shyamalan’s feature debut “The Watchers” had been a zippy rom-com or a breezy musical or a fast-paced action movie, we might not have felt it necessary to note from the start that Ishana is indeed the daughter of “The Village” and “Old” filmmaker M. Night Shyamalan. But given this is a moody, supernatural-themed, psychological horror thriller filmed in saturated earth tones and featuring a twist-upon-a-twist-upon-a-twist of an ending, we cannot avoid mentioning this.

Alas, though Ishana Night Shyamalan demonstrates promise as a filmmaker and delivers some arresting visuals and a few good jump-scares, “The Watchers” feels like a cover band’s take on familiar scary movie themes, with little in the way of original ideas or surprises.

Dakota Fanning, a seasoned and solid actor who has made sullen characters something of a specialty, plays the downbeat and cynical Mina, an American who works in a rather sad pet store in Galway and is tasked with transporting a rare golden parakeet to a zoo near Belfast. Dubbing the bird “Darwin” (the first of many references to themes of evolution and the changing nature of humans and perhaps some other entities), Mina sets off on the road trip, at one point stopping for gas just outside a vast and dense forest, yet somehow managing not to notice a board plastered with dozens upon dozens of flyers with “MISSING PERSONS.” I mean, there are so many MISSING PERSONS we have to wonder why the authorities and the international media haven’t descended upon this site to investigate what’s what.

A short while later, Mina’s car mysteriously breaks down, and this being a horror movie, Mina immediately decides she and Darwin the Golden Parakeet will abandon the vehicle and venture deep into the woods to look for help. (You’d think a well-paved road would be a better option than a dense and forbidding forest with signs proclaiming, “Point of No Return,” but here we go.)

The car seemingly disappears. A giant flock of CGI birds swoop through and above the trees. A mysterious, white-haired, older woman (Olwen Fouéré) materializes and urges Mina to run as fast as she can and follow her into a cement-and-glass fortress known as “The Coop.” Inside the Coop and understandably freaking out, Mina learns that the older woman is a former history professor named Madeleine, who introduces her to the troubled and twitchy Daniel (Oliver Finnegan) and the kind but clearly distressed Ciara (Georgina Campbell).

As Madeleine explains, they’re all trapped here as the prisoners of the Watchers, an unseen but often heard tribe of changeling-type creatures who live in the woods. Every night, they must stand in front of a two-way mirrored wall while the Watchers study them. During the day, they can roam the woods, but they must not go into any of the underground bunkers where the Watchers rest (apparently, they’ve got some vampire in them) and they must return to the Coop by sunset, or they’re goners. As for escape, that’s impossible. There’s no way out.

We get the occasional flashback filling out Mina’s back story, and some heart-pounding sequences when the Watchers get agitated when anyone breaks the rules. (Gradually, the creatures themselves are revealed. As is the case with so many horror films, the more we see of them, the less frightening they are.)

There’s a lot of talk about Irish folklore and fairies and such, but I found myself wondering about some of the details of life in the Coop. There’s just a bucket for waste, no shower, no running water, yet everyone still looks pretty fresh and clean. They have to hunt for food, but the pickings seem slim. Also, when a big discovery is made within the coop, you can’t help but wonder how this particular thing wasn’t unearthed months ago.

We’re reminded of elements from films such as “The Blair Witch Project” and “Invasion of the Body Snatchers” and TV series such as “Lost’ as Madeleine keeps explaining the rules, and Mina tries to rally Daniel and Ciara to think for themselves and join her in trying to do something, anything, to circumvent the rules and find a way out.

With an overwrought score pounding home every new development, “The Watchers” has a late reveal that should come as a surprise to no one, followed by ANOTHER twist, and then at least one more, until it was hard to keep count. The more we learn, the less it all makes sense, even for a movie about folklore creatures operating the worst Airbnb ever deep in the woods.

‘Am I OK?’ Review: When It’s Time to Grow Up

Dakota Johnson stars in an expansive friendship comedy about coming out in your 30s and finding yourself.

The appeal of the late bloomer movie is rooted in its parent genre: the coming-of-age story. Our heroine begins a little naïve and learns some hard but good lessons, maybe falls in love. Sometimes a mentor provides wisdom before leaving her to stand on her own two feet. In a traditional coming-of-age story, the protagonist is usually very young, so that world is full of possibility. Anything could happen next.

But with a late bloomer, the world’s possibilities have been shut down a little, and that shifts the tone. Decisions about career, friendships and family have already been made; the stakes of change are higher. That means a late bloomer story could be a comedy, or it could feel more melancholy, even like a tragedy. There’s an inherent realism in a film like “All of Us Strangers” or “Her” or “20th Century Women” that’s bracing and invigorating.

Depending on your age, Lucy (Dakota Johnson), who is 32, may not feel old enough to be termed a late bloomer. But she certainly feels like she is. The protagonist of “Am I OK?” has settled into a quiet, unchallenging Los Angeles life. She’s the kind of person who stares at a diner menu full of options and then orders the same meal — veggie burger, sweet potato fries, black iced coffee — every time. She spends most of her free time with Jane (Sonoya Mizuno), her childhood best friend, and keeps her life ripple-free. She’s never been in love. At the end of dinners with Ben (Whitmer Thomas), the guy she’s ostensibly dating, she shakes his hand.

By her own admission, Lucy is nervous all the time, “scared of everything.” Worse, she says, she’s not sure if she’s ever been happy, or what even makes her happy. She has built herself a comfortable box to live in, as long as nothing changes.

Her box is about to cave in. One day, Jane announces that she’s moving to London for work, and Lucy suddenly feels unmoored. A feeling that’s been growing inside her is now too strong to ignore: Lucy knows she’s attracted to women. And she’s especially attracted to Brittany (Kiersey Clemons), the peppy new masseuse at the spa where she works as a receptionist.

This one-two punch sends Lucy on a journey of self-discovery, which sounds like it could be the premise for a very annoying movie filled with metaphorical pratfalls and tired, winking tropes. Thankfully, that’s not “Am I OK?,” and there’s an obvious reason: Lucy is the semi-autobiographical creation of the screenwriter Lauren Pomerantz, and the story is based on her own experience.

Directed with a light and understated touch by a power couple — the comedian Tig Notaro and the actress Stephanie Allynne — the movie feels very lived-in, the banter fresh and funny, even if sometimes it feels like it’s standing in place a bit too long (a scene involving a “hammock sanctuary,” while funny, seems out of place in this script).

A late bloomer story depends on the audience believing the character isn’t too naïve, but also has space to grow, and that works well here. While Johnson has had a weird career in the past few years, culminating in the bizarre “ Madame Web ,” this movie, which premiered at Sundance in 2022, gives her the kind of role that matches her matter-of-fact public persona, even if Lucy is much more shy. The right chemistry is there, too — if you told me Johnson and Mizuno had been friends since the third grade and hike on weekends, I’d believe you. (Molly Gordon also appears in a pitch-perfect performance as Kat, Jane’s vibrantly irritating work bestie.)

On the surface, “Am I OK?” is a coming-out tale, and that’s how it’s being pitched by the movie’s marketing. But there’s an expansiveness to it, a sense that Lucy’s sexuality is not the only or most interesting thing about her growth. Really, “Am I OK?” is the story of a friendship growing from one stage to another — of the moment when youthful naïveté about life and friendship, the idea that we’ll just go on together this way forever, has to grow up. It turns out both Lucy and Jane have hard lessons to learn about the selves they’ve grown into, and it’s in their longstanding trust and care that they can start to become more than who they are. Their friendship is blooming into a new era, a bond with a future, and the world is full of possibility.
