In this essay, you are asked to discuss the arguments  for  and  against  animal testing, and then give  your own conclusions  on the issue.

This means you must look at both sides of the issue and you must also be sure you give your opinion too.

The essay is similar to an essay that says " Discuss both opinions and then give your opinion " but it is worded differently.

Take a look at the question and model answer below, and think about how the essay has been organised and how it achieves coherence and cohesion.

You should spend about 40 minutes on this task.

Animals Testing Essay - Model Answer

Issues related to animal experimentation are frequently discussed these days, particularly in the media. It is often said that animals should not be used in testing because it is cruel and unnecessary. This essay will examine the arguments for and against animal testing. 

On the one hand, the people who support these experiments say that we must do tests on animals. For instance, many famous lifesaving drugs were invented in this way, and animal experiments may help us to find more cures in the future. Indeed, possibly even a cure for cancer and AIDS. Furthermore, the animals which are used are not usually wild but are bred especially for experiments. Therefore, they believe it is not true that animal experiments are responsible for reducing the number of wild animals on the planet. 

On the other hand, others feel that there are good arguments against this. First and foremost, animal experiments are unkind and cause animals a lot of pain. In addition, they feel that many tests are not really important, and in fact animals are not only used to test new medicines but also new cosmetics, which could be tested on humans instead. Another issue is that sometimes an experiment on animals gives us the wrong result because animals’ bodies are not exactly the same as our own. As a consequence, this testing may not be providing the safety that its proponents claim.

In conclusion, I am of the opinion, on balance, that the benefits do not outweigh the disadvantages, and testing on animals should not continue. Although it may improve the lives of humans, it is not fair that animals should suffer in order to achieve this.

It fully answers all parts of the task - explaining the arguments ' for ' in the first paragraph and the arguments ' against ' in the next. Conclusions are then drawn with the writer giving their opinion in the conclusion.

It is thus very clearly organised, with each body paragraph having a central idea .

Ideas are also extended and supported by the use of reasons and some examples or further clarification. No ideas are left unclear or unexplained.

There is also some good topic related vocabulary in the animal testing essay such as 'life saving drugs ' and 'bred ' and a mix of complex sentences , such as adverbial clauses :

'Although it may improve the lives of humans, it is not fair that animals should suffer in order to achieve this'.

Noun clauses :

'...they feel that many tests are not really important'.

And relative clauses :

'...the animals which are used are not usually wild... '

Transitions are also used effectively to ensure there is good coherence and cohesion . For example, ' On the other hand.. ' indicates a change to discuss the contrasting ideas, and ' Therefore... " and ' As a consequence..' are used to give results.

IELTS animal testing essay: Some people think that it is acceptable to use animals in medical research for the benefits of human beings, while other people argue that it is wrong.

Over centuries humans have experimented with many different chemicals, products, and processes, with the final aim of bettering our conditions. Testing products on animals most likely dates back centuries, however, in modern society it is a controversial point. Below is an outline of circumstances when it could be considered acceptable and unacceptable.

Firstly, it is clear that major advances in fighting disease, viruses and illnesses would not have been made without testing products on animals. This is because it is inhumane to test the products on healthy human beings, likewise using computer modelling to predict reactions is only a recent possibility and still not as reliable as testing on animals. Therefore without experiments on animals, breakthroughs in medicine would have been impossible, and most would agree the price paid has been worth it.

Conversely, it could be argued that medical research carried out for mere cosmetic ends is undoubtedly not worth the lives of innocent animals. This is largely for two reasons, firstly a large body of research is said to have been built up previously from past experiments, and secondly there are alternatives such as dermatological testing or using natural ingredients.

For example, retail chains such as Lush and The Body Shop have both made fortunes by positioning themselves as natural solutions against animal testing. Therefore due to the end rationale for testing on animals, and the alternatives available, it is clear it is completely unjustifiable in this situation.

To conclude animal welfare can be side-stepped when the situation is threatening humans and computer alternatives are simply too premature. Nevertheless, when the research has rather fickle motives and viable alternatives do exist, in these cases the loss of animal's lives in inexcusable.

Task 2 Essay: Animals and Medical Research

Question: Some people claim that it is acceptable to use animals in medical research for the benefit of human beings, while other people argue that it is wrong. Discuss both views and give your opinion.

Band 8+ Sample Answer:

(Intro) People have different views on whether conducting tests on animals for the development of new medicines is acceptable or not. Although using animals for medical research can benefit humans to some extent, I would argue that this cruel practice is morally wrong.

(Body 1) On the one hand, it is undeniable that carrying out experiments on animals for medical research brings about a number of benefits to humans. To begin with, over the past few decades, there have been numerous medical breakthroughs using animal experimentation, which have saved millions of human lives. For example, according to research, the polio vaccine, which was developed using animal testing, has saved over 10 million lives since 1988. Furthermore, since human beings and other animal species suffer from many similar illnesses, such as diabetes and visual impairments, animals can act as models for the study of human diseases. If new drugs are not tested at all, or tested on humans first, they might have serious consequences for human beings.

(Body 2) On the other hand, there are various reasons why some individuals think that animal testing is entirely wrong. Firstly, laboratory animals are often subjected to toxic substances, which causes them pain, distress or even death. Millions of lab mice, for instance, become deformed, or die after being subjected to such cruel tests. Other animals that are frequently used for animal testing, such as dogs and monkeys, become mentally ill, developing severe neurological symptoms, due to confinement conditions and experimentation. As a result, it is believed that using animal testing for the development of new medicines is immoral, as all life is precious and should be respected. This point is strengthened by the fact that this form of animal cruelty is becoming increasingly unnecessary as animal research can now be replaced by sophisticated computer models.

(Conclusion) In conclusion, while it is true that animal testing plays a crucial role in the medical field, I am of the opinion that it should be stopped owing to its inhumane nature. As technology advances, computer models may one day help put an end to animal testing. In the meanwhile, more needs to be done to ensure this day comes sooner rather than later. (361 words).

Some people claim that it is acceptable to use animals in medical research for the benefit of human beings, while others argue that it is wrong. Discuss both views and give your opinion.

People have different views on how medical research should be conducted and tested. Although many people support the use of for developing medicines, I personally believe that animal testing is morally wrong.

The main reason why some people value to conduct medical research is because animal testing has contributed to many life-saving cures and treatments. It is true that nearly every medical breakthrough in the last 100 years has resulted directly from research using animals. For example, experiments in which dogs had their pancreases removed led directly to the discovery of insulin, critical to saving the lives of diabetics. Furthermore, it is impossible to release to the market before proving it no harm to humans and laboratory mice are appropriate research subjects because they are similar to human beings in many ways.

However, I people who consider medical development that involved the use of animals cruel and unacceptable. I believe that the lives of all creatures should be respected and we, humans, have no right to for our own benefits. Governments should invest in developing alternative methods that can replace when doing medical research. For example, a software program can be developed to model a human immune system and new drugs can be tested on the software rather than animals. In this way, no animals will suffer from the medical tests and the society can still benefit from medical development.

In conclusion, although it is undoubtedly true that animal testing has helped scientists in drug developments and medical discoveries, I believe that the benefits to humans do not justify the suffering caused to animals and we should use alternative methods when doing medical research that do not involve animals suffering.

This is a great essay. It addresses the two sides of the argument by exploring reasons why animals should and should not be used in medical research. The ideas are well explained and supported by examples. The use of paragraphing is efficient and helps with logical sequencing of ideas. Linking words are used appropriately to achieve the necessary cohesion. Author’s meaning is skillfully conveyed by the use of wide range of vocabulary. Even though there are some inaccurately used expressions, they don’t hinder understanding. Most sentences are error-free, instances of faulty grammar are rare. Overall, this essay seems worthy of IELTS Band 8.

You should use your own ideas, knowledge,  and experience and support your arguments with examples and relevant  evidence.

Write at least 250 words.

Model Answer :

The testing of medicines and cosmetics on animals has been a controversial  issue for ages, rallying celebrities and relying on graphic images to sway  peoples’ opinions. The opponents cite animal cruelty as the main reason  why testing should be banned, while the proponents point to the  significant progress in modern medicine that has, at least in part, relied  on animal testing.

There is no doubt that many of the practices in use in animal experiments  are cruel. Dripping nail polish into a rabbit’s eye to establish the dose  where the animal is blinded is not only cruel, it is also inexcusable as  nail polish falls into the domain of cosmetics, not medicine. Testing of  cosmetic products in this or similar fashions is most frequently  completely unnecessary and doesn’t add any fundamental value for humanity.  Hence, it is superfluous and ought to be avoided in my opinion.

However, there are valid arguments to be made for animal testing in  medical research. Before a promising drug, vaccine or treatment is used on  humans, it needs to be tested on animals in order to establish its safety.  This practice has many a time proven not only effective, but has saved  lives. Plenty of medications and treatments that make it to the animal  testing phase never actually reach the market because they turn out to be  either ineffective or dangerous. Animal testing for medical purposes is  thus necessary to protect human lives and reduce harm.

In summary, it can be concluded that there are valid arguments both for  and against animal experiments. A differentiated view weighs the gains  against the costs. In the case of medical research, prevention of harm and  eradication of diseases are valid arguments for continued animal testing.  However, inflicting cruelty on living creatures just for the sake of  beauty, as is arguably the case in cosmetics research, is not only  unnecessary but also inexcusable.

The debate over animal experimentation is complex, pivoting on ethical considerations and the pursuit of scientific advancements. Proponents of animal testing argue that it is indispensable for developing medical treatments and ensuring safety in consumer products. However, opponents question its morality and the suffering it causes to animals, advocating for alternatives.

The use of animals in scientific research is often justified by the physiological similarities they share with humans. These similarities enable researchers to glean insights that are directly applicable to human conditions. For instance, studies involving non-human primates have been crucial in evolving our understanding of Parkinson's disease, significantly enhancing treatment options. Such research is generally considered essential during the initial phases of medical studies, aimed at assessing the safety and efficacy of new treatments before they are trialed in humans. This necessary step ensures that potential therapies have been rigorously tested, thereby safeguarding human health during clinical trials.

Despite the current necessity of animal testing in some areas of research, there is a growing emphasis on developing alternatives that could one day eliminate the need for animal subjects entirely. Innovations like sophisticated computer simulations and organ-on-a-chip technology are at the forefront of this shift. Organ-on-a-chip, for example, replicates human organ systems on microchips, enabling researchers to observe the effects of drugs on human tissues in real-time. This technology not only provides data that are potentially more relevant to humans but also reduces the reliance on animal testing. Such advancements underscore the scientific community's commitment to the '3Rs' principle - Reduce, Refine, and Replace - aiming to minimize and eventually end animal testing.

In conclusion, while the current scientific landscape still often requires animal testing, the development of alternative methods is imperative. By investing in and prioritizing these innovations, we can look forward to a future where animal testing is no longer necessary. This not only aligns with ethical standards but also enhances the applicability of research results to human health.

Model Essay 2

The contentious issue of animal experimentation hinges on ethical concerns versus scientific benefits. This essay contends that while animal testing can be justified by its critical role in medical advancements, it is imperative to enforce stringent ethical guidelines and prioritize the development of alternative methods. The ensuing discussion will explore the necessity of such practices for medical progress and the evolving viability of non-animal testing techniques.

Firstly, the justification for animal testing primarily rests on its indispensability in advancing medical science. Many life-saving treatments, including insulin and vaccines, were developed through research involving animals. For instance, the polio vaccine, which has saved countless lives globally, was pioneered using non-human primates to study the disease's progression and test preliminary vaccine trials. Such examples underscore the argument that when human lives are at stake, animal experimentation can be considered a necessary albeit regrettable option. However, this necessity is contingent upon the absence of alternative methods that could achieve the same results without using animal subjects. Moreover, strict ethical guidelines must govern such experiments to minimize suffering and ensure that such measures are truly the last resort.

Secondly, the increasing availability and advancement of alternatives to animal testing highlight the potential for reducing reliance on animal subjects. Techniques such as in vitro testing, computer modeling, and the use of human cell cultures offer promising results without ethical compromises. For example, organs-on-chips technology uses human cells to simulate organ functions, allowing researchers to conduct experiments in ways that mimic human responses more accurately than animal testing. The adoption of these technologies not only enhances the ethical standards of research but also improves the reliability of scientific outcomes by reducing interspecies variability in test results. This shift not only reflects a more humane approach to research but also aligns with scientific advancements that could ultimately render animal testing obsolete.

In conclusion, while the necessity of animal testing in certain critical research areas remains, it is imperative that it is conducted with the utmost ethical standards and only when there are no suitable alternatives. Simultaneously, the development and validation of non-animal methods should be actively pursued to ensure that the scientific community moves towards more humane and scientifically robust research practices.

Model Essay 3

It is undeniable that many research centres around the world still perform experiments on lab animals. Many people, especially animal lovers and pet owners, are against the practice. In my opinion, this movement against animal testing, though it is  noble and benevolent, is not yet one hundred percent achievable.

In order to make any product safe for human consumption, be it a next generation vaccine or a new type of cosmetic cream, the most reliable method to ensure its safety is to test it  thoroughly under stringent processes. In doing so, sometimes, this  inevitably includes exposing animals to these new products first. The main reason is  because some animals' biological markups are very similar to human beings, and we can achieve more accurate and direct results. For example, mice are used in research on Alzheimer’s diseases. Additionally, for some cases, we simply do not have a  technology advanced enough to test without live animals. Moreover, testing without live animals may drive up the research costs and make the end product's prices higher for the general public. 

However, this does not mean that we should continue this practice indefinitely and unnecessarily. First of all, governments should establish well-defined rules and regulations to ensure humane treatment of all animals used in research environments. This will help to provide a level of protection for the animals. Another measure is to outlaw animal testing on all non-essential products such as make-up and beauty products. Last but not least, research organizations should dedicate parts of their effort in advancing the research methodologies so that animal testing can one day be completely eliminated.

In conclusion, though removing the animal testing from the science and research field is not yet possible as of now, we can be kind towards animals by establishing strict welfare guidelines and supporting cruelty-free methods.

One of the most debated ethical issues in the field of medicine nowadays is the use of animals in medical experiments. This essay will explore both sides of this debate, examining the advantages and disadvantages of using animals for medical experiments.

The first advantage of this method is that it allows the testing of new drugs, vaccines and procedures on animals before they are performed on humans. This step will determine the safety and efficacy of new medical products  and predict possible side-effects in humans, which is essential for preventing human health from adverse effects of faulty products. Another benefit of using animals for medical experiments is the opportunity to test new treatments in a more controlled and secured environment. The use of animal models in experiments allows researchers to control various variables such as age, gender, weight, et cetera in a way that is much more difficult with human subjects. This could increase the accuracy of the results, speeding up the development of new medical treatments. 

However, this approach has some significant downsides. The most obvious complaint against experiments on animals is that it is inhumane and unethical to subject animals to painful and even lethal testing. Furthermore, opponents of this method argue that human physiology can not always be replaced by animal representation, which can eventually lead to ineffective treatments wasting time and resources. Finally, the use of animals for experiments can contribute to a widespread culture which normalizes and legitimizes the use of living beings as mere resources for human benefit. This can result in negative attitudes and practices against animals, which can have severe consequences for both human and animal life. 

In summary, the use of animals for medical testing is a complex issue. The ethical treatment of animals and the pursuit of medical knowledge must be balanced in a way that prioritizes both human and animal lives.

In the IELTS writing exam, you could be asked to write an essay about animals. Most likely, your question would relate to animal rights . This might seem challenging for some people, so I have written this article to help you understand it better.

Animal Rights and IELTS

For IELTS writing, you often have to discuss ethical issues. Thus, for the topic of animals, you would most likely have to write about animal rights. This could include:

• whether it is ethical to keep animals in a zoo
• discussing animal experimentation
• the ethics of eating meat
• whether humans should keep pets

Because IELTS requires no specialist knowledge, you would probably not have anything more specific than this to discuss. For example, you wouldn’t be asked about the ethics of purebred pet ownership because most people don’t know much about it. You would also not be given anything that is extremely controversial.

Therefore, the most common animal topics will be quite general and relate to animal rights.

Animal Rights Essay – Experimentation

Here is the question that we will examine today:

Some people argue that all experimentation on animals is bad and should be outlawed. However, others believe that important scientific discoveries can be made from animal experiments. Can experimentation on animals be justified? Are there any alternatives?

Note that there are many variants upon this topic. I have seen this same idea with “ Discuss both views ” and “ To what extent do you agree/disagree ” question types.

This one, of course, is a two-part question . Therefore, don’t waste too much time reading the long part above the questions. Regardless of what that says, your task is to:

• Say whether or not experiments on animals can be justified.
• Say whether there are alternatives to this practice.

Be aware that your answer to the first question cannot negate having to answer the second. Whether you say that animal testing can or can’t be justified, you still have to say whether there are alternatives.

Language for an Animal Rights Essay

If you need to write an essay on animal rights, you need to know some appropriate language. Again, you do not need to be an expert, but you should have enough of a grasp of English to say something intelligent about the topic.

You may have noticed that I’ve used these expressions in this article:

• Animal experimentation
• Experiments on animals
• Animal testing

These all mean the same thing but it can be useful to employ different ways to do that, so that you don’t just repeat yourself.

Of course, what you say will also depend hugely on your position and your ideas. If you think that animal experimentation is wrong, then you’ll probably incorporate some rather negative language, such as:

• Impossible to justify

On the other hand, if you support animal testing, you might say something more positive:

It is also good to know some specific language related to the topic:

• Medical testing
• Subjected to

You can learn more language by reading articles on this topic. Try searching Google for “animal rights” or “animal testing.” You’ll find lots of articles. Just make sure that it is written by a native speaker or a professional writer. Also, be aware that with a contentious topic there will probably be a lot of passionate language and maybe even some misinformation.

Planning your Answer

First of all, you need to figure out what your position is in regards the question(s). Then, you need to think about how to explain your position in a straightforward way.

Here, we had two questions. Both of them are yes/no questions but of course you need to develop those ideas with explanations. Think of your answer as “Yes because…” or “No because…” This will help you to think of reasons that you can then incorporate into your answers.

Also, be aware that two-part questions are really easy to structure! You can just devote one body paragraph to each question:

My position is that animal experimentation cannot be justified, so I will explain that in my first body paragraph. I will start with the main argument in defence of animal testing, then refute it comprehensively.

For the next question, I will state that I don’t really know whether or not there are any alternatives. Thus, my structure will be:

Sample Band 9 Answer

Over the past few decades, animal testing has been fiercely debated due to the ethical problems inherent in this area of science. This essay will explain why it cannot be justified and that alternatives need to be sought.

The people who believe that animal testing is necessary tend to say that there are serious benefits to humanity, such as testing medicines before using them on human beings. They believe that this will help to figure out the cures to many serious illnesses, which will make the world a better place for humans. However, this is wrong for several reasons. Chief among them is the fact that animal testing is not as helpful in developing medicines as people think. Medicines that work on animals do not always work on humans, and vice versa. As such, these trials are not just unnecessary but also profoundly unhelpful. For example, if scientists give a mouse diabetes and then try various drugs to cure the problem, they may find that there are twelve drugs that do not work on the mouse. However, maybe one of those drugs would have worked on a human. As such, animal testing would have caused more problems than it solved.

Part of the reason for animal testing is that there are not many alternatives. Whilst it is obviously cruel and pointless to subject animals to experiments, most people would agree that it is worse to do this to human beings. However, there needs to be some sort of procedure by which testing can move from theoretical to human trials without the need for the evils of animal testing. What this process would be remains to be seen, but it is essential for any humane society.

In conclusion, people may argue that there are benefits that come from experimenting on animals, but in fact there is no good reason to continue doing this. Scientists need to immediately seek an alternative and end this barbaric and pointless practice. 

Notes on the Answer

This was a good answer because it gave fully developed explanations and used language accurately. Here are some words and phrases from the answer:

• fiercely debated
• ethical problems
• profoundly unhelpful
• cruel and pointless
• theoretical
• humane society

Paragraph two was also quite interesting. I felt that the most convincing way to make my point was to show conventional logic and then comprehensively debunk it. To do so, I gave a clear example and demonstrated through a simple explanation of just why animal testing is so useless.
