As man’s life is dependable upon the rivers, it is the duty of mankind to keep them healthy and perfect, free from pollution. But because of rapid urbanization and industrialization, rivers are being highly polluted by becoming a vast dumping reservoir.

Rivers are dynamic and mysterious, and they house incredible wildlife. Rivers provide communities with drinking water and also provide water for the cultivation of their crops.

Keeping the water clean from trash helps the river free from getting contaminated with dangerous bacteria that can threaten the lives of both animals and people. Rivers are also a major source of livelihood for many of the people.

However, these sources of life are dwindling, which will make up many problems as many people are dependable upon it. Not only is water and food, the principal source of supply for everyone to survive, but also one of the major energy sources in the world. Keeping the river water clean is essential for keeping the environment healthy.

Why should we save rivers?

The Earth’s body is covered with seventy-one percent water, of which ninety-five percent is in the ocean, which is salty and is undrinkable. Rivers are the source of fresh water that is required to sustain life on Earth.

The freshwater environment includes lakes, rivers, streams, and groundwater. Water is a non-renewable source that is we cannot recycle it; once used or wasted, it cannot be retrieved again. Similarly, to air life cannot exist on Earth without water, even water exists in the air as water vapor.

But we have been careless with one of the most important resources required to sustain life. Because of the mismanagement of the freshwater by pollution and dumping of the toxic wastes on the water had damaged the habitats surrounding the rivers. We lost so many of the wetlands and their wildlife because of mismanagement.

Hence, it is necessary to manage the river’s freshwater wisely so that life can be sustained on Earth’s surface. The installation of effluent treatment plants by government and people at industrial garbage and sewage units.

Pure, sparkling rivers with a lot of abundant aquatic life reflect the cleanliness of the people living near the riverbanks. It directly links preservation of the rivers is directly to the preservation of humankind’s life.

How to Save rivers?

There are many ways to save the river water; we list some of them below-

• To avoid waste the age of freshwater, people should take small and quick showers.
• While running the washing machine, it should be loaded to full capacity; we should not run the washing machine on half load so that the water waste age is minimum.
• When you are not using the water, turn the tap off and other equipment.
• If there is use fresh water available with you, save it for future use.
• All your water pipe settings should be checked, so that there is no leakage of the water.

• Water your lawn and garden during early morning or late evening when the temperature is cool so they do not lose the water because of evaporation.
• Wash your car at the carwash where recycled water is used. It not only saves the water but also avoids the dirty water reaching the rivers through sewers.

We should make the younger generation conscious of the importance of the river so they can avoid the mistakes by our generation. Saving rivers is essential to keep the supply of freshwater steady to maintain life on the surface of the water.

People can live without food for a few days, but without freshwater, they can’t. Many people’s lives depend on rivers, like the one developing crops through agriculture or fishing at the rivers, which are the major source of food for people.

I am Ganga, the sacred river of India. I am a living entity that has flowed through the heart of this ancient land for millennia. My waters are not just a source of sustenance, they are a reflection of the spiritual and cultural heritage of this great nation. In this autobiographical journey, I will take you through the aeons of history. The tales of civilizations and the timeless connection that the people of India have had with me.

My journey begins high in the Himalayas, in a place known as Gangotri. It is nestled in the Indian state of Uttarakhand. It is here, at an altitude of over 10,000 feet, that I emerge from the Gangotri Glacier as a pristine swiftly flowing stream. My birth is a symbol of purity. I start my descent carving my path through the rugged terrain.

In the ancient scriptures, my descent is associated with the story of King Bhagirath. He undertook rigorous penance to bring my waters to the earth’s surface to purify the souls of his ancestors. Lord Shiva, moved by his devotion, agreed to bear the force of my fall upon his head. Then I descended gently onto the earth. This legend symbolizes the deep spiritual connection woven into my waters since time immemorial.

I continue my journey through the northern plains of India. Then I come into contact with various civilizations and cultures. The cities and towns along my banks become centres of learning and spirituality. I feed the fertile lands and support the growth of agriculture. Thus contribute to the prosperity of the region

Varanasi is one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in the world. It holds a special place in my heart. The ghats along my banks in Varanasi are sites of profound religious significance. Pilgrims come from far and wide to perform rituals. They cremate their loved ones and take a dip in my holy waters to cleanse their sins. The ghats are the Eden of the timeless rituals and spirituality that define the essence of India.

My waters are believed to possess healing properties both physical and spiritual. People believe that bathing in my waters is an act of purification. People also said that my currents can cleanse the soul of impurities. Temples and ashrams dot my banks offering solace to those seeking spiritual awakening and peace.

In recent years, my journey has been full of challenges. The growing population, industrialization and pollution have taken a toll on the purity of my waters. Efforts are being made to address these issues with initiatives to clean and rejuvenate me. But the battle is ongoing. My story is a reminder of the delicate balance between human progress and environmental preservation.

In the 1980s, the Indian government launched the Ganga Action Plan to address the pollution of my waters. This initiative aimed to reduce the discharge of untreated sewage and industrial waste into the river. While progress has been made much work remains to be done to restore me to my pristine state.

Faith and conservation have often gone hand in hand along my banks. Initiatives like the “Namami Gange” programme were launched by the Indian government. It combines scientific and spiritual approaches to protect and rejuvenate my waters. This program seeks to involve communities, govt bodies, religious institutions and environmental organizations in the mission to clean and preserve me.

My journey has inspired countless poets, writers and artists. My waters have been immortalized in literature and art. I continue to be a muse for those who seek to capture the essence of India’s cultural and spiritual heritage.

As I flow through the plains of India, I continue to carry with me the stories, traditions and hopes of millions. My waters are a source of life and spirituality for the people of this land. I am Ganga, a river that has witnessed the rise and fall of civilizations, a witness to the ever-changing landscape of India.

I continue my journey eastward. Then I approach the vast delta region where I meet the Bay of Bengal. The Ganges Delta, known as the Sundarbans, is one of the largest in the world. It’s a region of immense ecological significance. It was teemed with diverse flora and fauna. The mangrove forests of the Sundarbans are home to the endangered Royal Bengal tiger, making this area a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

In this region, I am more than a river; I am a lifeline. Millions of people in India and Bangladesh depend on me for their livelihoods. They use my waters for agriculture, fishing and transportation. The fertile soil in this delta is a result of centuries of silt deposition. Thus I make it one of the most productive agricultural regions in the world.

My journey is closely tied to the monsoon season. Every year, as the monsoon winds sweep across the Indian subcontinent, they bring heavy rains that swell my waters. The monsoon rains are a blessing, recharging my flow and rejuvenating the lands along my banks. However, they can also bring devastation in the form of floods, challenging the resilience of the communities that depend on me.

The Ganges is not only a source of life but also a river closely associated with death. In Varanasi , the city of light, the ghats along my banks are also the sites of cremation ceremonies. Hindus believe that cremating the deceased by my waters ensures a direct path to moksha or liberation from the cycle of reincarnation. The rituals performed here are deeply spiritual, a reminder of the cyclical nature of life and death.

My journey doesn’t end at India’s eastern border. I flow into Bangladesh where I continue to be a lifeline for the people and wildlife of the region. Bangladesh relies on my waters for agriculture, transportation and as a source of drinking water. In the deltaic regions of Bangladesh, my waters create intricate networks of rivers and channels and form a unique and dynamic ecosystem.

I have been a source of life for millions. But I have also faced severe challenges in recent times. Pollution from industrial discharge and untreated sewage, as well as deforestation and over-extraction of groundwater, threaten my health and vitality. These challenges necessitate a collaborative effort from both India and Bangladesh to protect and restore my waters.

Despite the challenges, there is hope. Both India and Bangladesh recognize the need to conserve and rejuvenate me. Efforts are being made to treat wastewater before it enters my flow. Awareness campaigns are promoted for responsible environmental practices. Conservationists and scientists are working tirelessly to ensure that I remain a source of life for future generations.

As I conclude my autobiography, I want to emphasize that I am more than just a river. I am a symbol of life, spirituality and culture. My journey has been long and eventful. I have touched the lives of countless people. I continue to be a source of inspiration, a lifeline for communities and a reminder of the oneness of all living beings.

In my waters, I carry the stories, hopes, and aspirations of millions. I am Ganga, the eternal river, and my journey will continue, ever-flowing, ever-adapting and ever-inspiring.

Rivers of India plays a very important role in the lives of Indian. Rivers provide water which people use for cultivation of crops, for the purpose of electricity and for the purpose of livelihood.

Rivers are the reason because of which large numbers of cities are situated on the bank of Rivers. Rivers also plays an important role in Hindu Dharma.   

People of India consider rivers as holy. They play an important role in promoting trade and agriculture. For Indians rivers are like temple where they do prayer.   

There are seven major rivers in India along with their tributaries. The largest pour system of rivers is in Bay of Bengal and some of the rivers empty themselves in Arabian Sea.   

Origin of major rivers is from the following watersheds:  

• Aravalli Range  
• Karakoram and Himalaya Ranges  
• Western Ghats and Sahyadri in western India  
• Satpura and vindhya ranges and chota nagpur plateau in central part of India

Classification of rivers of India

• Rivers of North India: Rivers of north India originates from Himalayas.  

Major rivers are: 

• Ganga and its tributaries  
• The Brahmaputra  
• The Sutlej  
• Ravi and Beas these are main tributaries of Indus  

Rivers of South India: They originates from different mountain ranges and they are not perennial.  

Major rivers of south India are:  

• The Narmada  
• The Mahanadi  
• The Godavari  
• The Krishna  
• The kaveri  

It is the most famous river. Because of the usefulness of Ganga this river is also called as Mother Ganga. The length of Ganga River is about 2400 kms. It originates from the glacier which is called as gadgetry at Gomulka in Himalayas, also known as Gangotri glacier.  

About 320 kms it flows in mountain bed and there it is called as Bhagirathi and then joins Alaknanda River at Devprayag. Ganga is the main holy river of India. It has its own significance in the hearts of Indian People. They worship river ganga as goddess Ganga.  

In the plain stage the tributaries of Ganga like Rama Ganga, the Ghaghara, the Gomati, the Gander and Kaveri they all drain into Ganga from its left bank and Rivers like Yamuna, the Beta, the Chambal and the Son they drain in the right bank of Ganga.

It joins with Brahmaputra in the lower. It is known by various names. In Uttar Pradesh it is called Ganga, In Kolkata it is called Hugliu and in Arunachal Pradesh it is called as River Brahmaputra.  

Ganga has been very much polluted in the name of rituals. Government is making efforts to clean and purify it.  

Principle tributary of Ganga is Yamuna. From glacier Yamunotri, it originates and flows parallel to the Ganga and joins Ganga in Allahabad.  

Prayag is known as the meeting point of Ganga and Yamuna.  

The Brahmaputra

Its length is 2880kms and originates from glacier cuff mount Kailas, from Tibet it flows from the name of Tango; it flows in Tibet around 1100kms. It joins Ganga and then falls into Bay of Bengal.   

The Mahanadi

It is largest river of Orissa and its length is 858 kms. The origin of his river is in Amarkantak plateau of Madhya Pradesh and then it enters into Orissa. At false point it falls into Bay of Bengal.   

The Godavari

It is the largest river of south India with a length of 1440 kms. From Nasik of Western Ghats, it originates. To drain in Bay of Bengal it takes eastward course.  

From Rajmahendri its delta begins. The major tributaries of this river are Yen Ganga and Indrāvati.  

The Krishna

From Western Ghats of Mahabaleshwar, it originates and then flows about 1280kms down the western Ghats. It drains into Bay of Bengal towards the east. Main tributaries of Krishna river are Tungabhadra and the Bhīma.  

The Cauvery or Kaveri

From coorg it originates, it originates from mountain region. It flows about 280kms after that it falls into Bay of Bengal. In its course there is a waterfall of height 98 meters which is near Sivasarnurdam. It is also called as south India’s Ganga.  

The principle west flowing rivers of India are Ganga and Tapi.  

Numbers of small waterfall are rises from rivers and then they drain into Arabian Sea. Surakarta and Prewar are important rivers those are responsible for water fall.  

All the big rivers are originated from some hills or mountain. After that they are fed with rain and snow. During rain most of the rivers are born and dries in summer.

If you ask me my age, I’m sure I can’t give you an exact number. I am a river. I am the source of freshwater that starts high from the mountains and finally flows to merge into a sea or an ocean. I have seen big and small dinosaurs, and I have seen short and long wars. I have seen humans worship me, and I have seen the same humans pollute me. Today I am opening up my heart to you. I am pouring my feelings and telling you my story.

I started my journey from a glacier in the mystical Himalayas. All around me was snow as far as the eye could see. I could spot the Himalayan Wild Yak, the Musk Deer, and the Snow Leopard. They were massive beasts with lots of furs and looked ferocious. I was scared when I saw them coming towards me, but I soon learned that they needed me to live and did not mean to cause any harm to me.

Over the years, their population started dwindling. I wonder what the reason was. Maybe it is true what they say about animal hunters. What a nightmare! Going further, I took a drastic fall and flowed towards a downward path, thus giving rise to a waterfall. I could notice certain humans near me. They were known as monks. They used to sit peacefully meditating while my cold water fell on their heads and their whole body.

I flowed through mountains and valleys. I loved the scenic beauty. It felt so much like home. There were so many trees around me, and hundreds of various types of animals would come to me to quench their thirsts. There were some people also who lived in the great mountains. It felt as if wherever I went, life started growing. The mountain people were so hardworking. They would walk long distances, collect my water in their big buckets and then walk back home.

I was very helpful to them. I would hit rocks and collect their debris. I made my way further down towards the plains with pebbles, nutrients, and aquatic life. The ride was for sure bumpy, but I hadn’t realized that it would be utterly unpleasant as well. I was nothing but good to the city folk. I provided them with clean water to wash, bathe and drink. I invited them to swim in me and have fun with their friends.

I was even okay with it when they built hydroelectric power plants on me to supply electricity. But what did I get in return? How do I tell you about the way humans treated me? Or shall I say Mistreated me? Instead of taking my water in buckets to their homes, they started bathing themselves as well as their cattle in me. The ladies would even wash their dirty clothes in my water.

What was worse? I started getting polluted. With each passing day, I was getting fuller with sewage waste factories’ harmful chemicals, and many people even threw their house trash bags in me. Besides concrete houses and big industrial plants, a few temples were located around me.

The people near the temple worshipped me. They joined their hands and bowed their heads towards me. What a respectful gesture! But you know what the irony was. Although they only wanted to get closer to god, they were destroying my pureness either knowingly or unknowingly. I was beginning to get impure with the presence of flower petals, mud lamps, and most of all, plastic.

I couldn’t wait to get out of the plains. I had suffered enough, and I just wanted to reach my destination and merge with the sea. After reaching the sea, it was like I was lost. You couldn’t identify me, and it was so vast. But I loved being there. I was a companion to small boats, big ships, and mighty submarines. Fascinating creatures, including the giant blue whale and the adorable dolphins, lived and swam in me. It was such a delight to watch them.

River Classifications

Whitewater is rated on a scale of increasing difficulty from Class 1 to Class 6. This classification system provides a useful guide to the technical difficulty of a river, but there are so many other variables that can have a huge impact on the difficulty or danger of a river. 

• Is it continuous in nature or drop and pool? 
• Is the water warm or freezing in temperature? 
• How remote is the run and how far away is help? 
• Can you walk out if need be, or is it in a canyon? 
• Is portaging an option for all rapids, or are you committed to running everything? 

As you can see, there can be massive differences between two rivers of the same class. For this reason, it's your responsibility to find out more about any river you're considering paddling. For many areas, there are guidebooks with detailed descriptions and images of the rivers, and more of these are available each year. It's always a good idea to pick one of these up. You can also ask questions on On-line chatboards or stop in at the local retailer for information. You can never be too well informed.

The classification system is still very useful for giving a river a general level of difficulty. It must be accepted that this system is in no way an exact science, and that it's open to interpretation. Here are some general guidelines for the whitewater classification system.

Class 1 (Easy) : Fast-moving current with small waves and few obstructions that are easily avoided. Low-risk. Easy self-rescue.

Class 2 (Novice) : Straightforward rapids with wide-open channels that are evident without scouting. Occasional manoeuvring is required. Trained paddlers will easily avoid any rocks or medium-sized waves. Swimmers are seldom injured.

Class 3 (Intermediate) : Rapids with moderate, irregular waves, strong eddies and currents. Complex manoeuvres and good boat control are required. Major hazards are easily avoided. Scouting is recommended for inexperienced paddlers. Self-rescue is usually easy and injuries to swimmers are rare.

Class 4 (Advanced) : Powerful, turbulent, and predictable rapids with large, unavoidable waves and holes or constricted passages. Fast and reliable eddy turns and precise boat handling are needed to navigate safely through. Scouting is necessary, and rapids may require "must-make" moves above dangerous hazards. Strong Eskimo roll highly recommended, as there is a moderate to high risk of injury to swimmers. Self-rescue is difficult, so skilled group assistance often needed.

Class 5 (Expert) : Extremely long, obstructed, or violent rapids with exposure to substantial risk. Expect large, unavoidable waves and holes, or steep, congested chutes. Eddies may be small, turbulent, difficult to reach, or non-existent. Reliable Eskimo roll, proper equipment, extensive experience, high level of fitness and practiced rescue skills essential for survival. Scouting highly recommended, but may be difficult. Swims are very dangerous and rescues are difficult.

Class 6 (Extreme) : These runs exemplify the boundaries of difficulty, unpredictability and danger, and have almost never been attempted, if ever. The consequences of errors are very severe and rescue may be impossible. Only expert teams with ideal conditions and extensive safety systems should ever consider these rapids.

Water is the most important and valuable natural resource on Earth. It sustains all life. There is no life without water. Water is not only important for human beings but for the entire ecosystem. Without enough water, the existence of humans, as well as animals, is next to impossible. After fresh air, water is the second most important natural resource for the survival of any living being. 

Water is necessary for the survival of each living creature on this planet, be it a small worm, plant, or full-grown tree.  Animals and plants  cannot survive without water. About 71% of Earth’s surface is covered with water. Unfortunately, only 3% of the water available  is freshwater. About two-thirds of the freshwater lies in the form of frozen glaciers and ice caps. The rest of the small portion is available in the form of groundwater and surface water. 

We totally depend on water for multiple purposes. Water is used in agriculture for the irrigation of crops. We use water for drinking, cooking, cleaning, bathing, and other domestic purposes. Water is used for recreational activities. In industries, water is used as a coolant, solvent and also used in other manufacturing purposes. Hydroelectricity is generated with the help of water. Water is also used for navigation and transportation of goods. This tells us how water is the most essential component of life and every drop of water is vital for sustenance. Therefore, water conservation is important to save life on this planet.

Importance of Water:

The basic use of water is drinking, bathing, agriculture, irrigation, hospitality, factories, etc.

Water helps in blood circulation and improves metabolism in the human body

The entire aquatic ecosystem is located in water. It is a home for all the aquatic animals

Water is a major source of transportation after land and air.

Water aids in saliva secretion and oxygen delivery to our bodily cells.

 Some countries have abundant water resources for their residents and serve        the people, whereas others lack natural resources even for survival.

Depletion of fresh water has become a threat to our existence. According to some scientists, the quantity and the quality of water are degrading day by day. Although Earth is covered with almost 71% of water, the quality is that we cannot use it in day-to-day life for domestic purposes. Water quality is so poor that people in some places are prone to several water-borne diseases such as Eluru, caused by contaminated water. 

These instances are eye-opening examples and should be taken seriously for better living conditions for us and our future generation.

Below are the Reasons for Shortage of Fresh Water:

Growth of population leads to excessive consumption of water. 

Daily excessive wastage of water.

The rapid growth of industries has increased the problem of proper disposal of waste material from them. The waste products from these industries contain extremely poisonous elements that are polluting the rivers and other water bodies. 

Pesticides and chemical fertilisers that are used to treat crops also pollute the fresh water. 

Sewage waste that is dumped into the rivers is making the water unsuitable for drinking and washing causing several water-borne diseases like cholera, jaundice and typhoid.  

Use of plastics and disposing them carelessly in the water bodies are affecting aquatic life and further disturbing the entire ecosystem.

Global warming is another major reason for the scarcity of water on earth. According to several types of research, because of global warming, the world will face more stress for water scarcity till the year 2050.

 We now need to be aware of the depletion of fresh water and take adequate    measures to stop this. 

Saving Water: Need of the Hour

Many places face extreme water scarcity due to extremely bad weather conditions, leading to less rainfall and groundwater depletion. In other parts of the world, groundwater is either unusable or overused. As the world's population is growing, so increase in industries and globalisation, causing groundwater to be overused and resulting in water scarcity.

The World Health Organisation (WHO) data shows that many people on this planet don't have access to clean and fresh drinking water. These situations are becoming worse day by day, and we need an immediate plan to control this situation. Various collective measures have to be taken by every individual on this planet and the government of every country to control water scarcity.

Government should impose some strict rules for the conservation of water. The government and the citizens have to take the initiative to create awareness and promote the “conservation of water.” One such initiative taken by the Modi government in India was “JANSHAKTI FOR JALSHAKTI.” This programme began as a means of working toward a brighter future.

Initiatives taken by Some State Governments:

The Punjab government contributed to saving water resources by avoiding waterlogging and fixing the drain  leakage.

The Rajasthan government has taken the initiative to construct small ponds, which  helped the local people of Rajasthan in many ways.

Villages of Telangana have constructed water tanks to conserve rainwater for future use.

These states are an inspiration, and others should also take a step forward to conserve and clean the water, water bodies, and groundwater.

Water saving should be and is the universal responsibility of every human being, living on this Earth.

There are many ways in which we can save water and reduce their pollution:

Be responsible to save water daily. Use only the required amount of water and avoid wastage. We should use water wisely.

We should use a washing machine to full capacity for washing clothes. 

We should not let the tap run while washing hands and face. 

We should water plants in the evening or early morning to minimise evaporation.

We should make provisions to store rainwater on rooftops and reuse the water for household purposes.

Bigger Communities and farmers should adapt to the practice of Rainwater harvesting. 

The industrial waste should be treated properly instead of dumping it into rivers.

We should stop using plastics and dispose of them in an adequate way.

We can make people aware about water problems by means of social campaigns and other ways.

 We should educate our children about water saving from an early age. 

Reusing the water is an important way to save and prevent the scarcity of water. Bathing water can be recycled and used for planting or cleaning.

Rainwater harvesting is the method of collecting rainwater and conserving them for future use.

Conservation of groundwater is another important method in the preservation of groundwater and using it in the future.

 Prevention of waterlogging.

We cannot imagine our lives without water. It is unfortunate that mankind has neglected this precious gift from God. Conservation of water is a necessity to save life. All living organisms on this planet need water to survive. If we do not give importance to saving or conservation of water then our future generations will face water scarcity.

The water cycle is a natural process that is continuous in nature. It is the pattern in which the water from oceans, seas, lakes, etc gets evaporated and turns to vapor. After which it goes through the process of condensation, and finally precipitation when it falls back to earth as rain or snow.

What is Water Pollution?

Water pollution is the contamination of water bodies (like oceans, seas, lakes, rivers, aquifers, and groundwater) usually caused due to human activities. Water pollution is any change, minor or major in the physical, chemical or biological properties of water that eventually leads to a detrimental consequence of any living organism . The effects of Water Pollution are:

Diseases: In humans, drinking or consuming polluted water in any way has many disastrous effects on our health. It causes typhoid, cholera, hepatitis and various other diseases.

Eradication of Ecosystem: Ecosystem is extremely dynamic and responds to even small changes in the environment. Increasing water pollution can cause an entire ecosystem to collapse if left unchecked.

Eutrophication: Chemicals accumulation and infusion in a water body, encourages the growth of algae. The algae form a layer on top of the pond or lake. Bacteria feed on this algae and this event decreases the amount of oxygen in the water body, severely affecting the aquatic life there

Effects of the food chain: Turmoil in food chain happens when the aquatic animals (fish, prawns, seahorse, etc) consume the toxins and pollutants in the water,  and then the humans consume them.

Prevention of Water Pollution

The best way to prevent large-scale water pollution is to try and reduce its harmful effects. There are numerous small changes we can make to protect ourselves from a future where water is scarce.

Conserve Water: Conserving water should be our first aim. Water wastage is a major problem globally and we are only now waking up to the issue. Simple small changes made domestically will make a huge difference.

Treatment of sewage: Treating waste products before disposing of it in water bodies helps reduce water pollution on a large scale. Agriculture or other industries can reuse this wastewater by reducing its toxic contents.

Use of environment-friendly products: By using soluble products that do not go on to become pollutants, we can reduce the amount of water pollution caused by a household.

Life is ultimately about choices and so is water pollution. We cannot live with sewage-strewn beaches, contaminated rivers , and fish that are poisonous to drink and eat. To avoid these scenarios,  we can work together to keep the environment clean so the water bodies, plants, animals, and people who depend on it remain healthy. We can take individual or teamed action to help reduce water pollution. As an example, by using environmentally friendly detergents, not pouring oil down the drains, reducing the usage of pesticides, and so on. We can take community action too to keep our rivers and seas cleaner. And we can take action as countries and continents to pass laws against water pollution. Working together, we can make water pollution less of a problem—and the world a better place.

Rivers are found everywhere in the world. There are slow and fast rivers, warm and cold rivers, wide and narrow rivers. A narrow river is usually called a stream. Rivers rise from a mountain or a large lake. Some are fed by snow water, and some by rain water. Their flow is swift and they carry with them rocks, weeds, shells and deposits of dust and silt.

At the place of origin, a river is thin and narrow, but it broadens Out as it moves along. At times smaller rivers called tributaries, join the main river.

A river is an important geographical feature as it provides us with water for all purposes. Apart from domestic purposes, we use it for irrigation, transport and trade. Towns built on its banks prosper because of it.

At some places, the big waterfalls are used to generate electricity which is called hydro-electric power. This power is used to supply electricity to villages and towns. It is also used for generating power to mills and factories and for irrigation.

But rivers can cause great damage as well, for they get flooded and this harms crops, people and houses resulting in death, sickness and famine.

However, this does not lessen their beauty, power or magnificence and many poets have been inspired by the flow of a river.

The face of the water, in time, became a wonderful book—a book that was a dead language to the uneducated passenger, but which told its mind to me without reserve, delivering its most cherished secrets as clearly as if it uttered them with a voice. And it was not a book to be read once and thrown aside, for it had a new story to tell every day. Throughout the long twelve hundred miles there was never a page that was void of interest, never one that you could leave unread without loss, never one that you would want to skip, thinking you could find higher enjoyment in some other thing. There never was so wonderful a book written by man; never one whose interest was so absorbing, so unflagging, so sparkingly renewed with every reperusal. The passenger who could not read it was charmed with a peculiar sort of faint dimple on its surface (on the rare occasions when he did not overlook it altogether); but to the pilot that was an  italicized  passage; indeed, it was more than that, it was a legend of the largest capitals, with a string of shouting exclamation points at the end of it; for it meant that a wreck or a rock was buried there that could tear the life out of the strongest vessel that ever floated. It is the faintest and simplest expression the water ever makes, and the most hideous to a pilot’s eye. In truth, the passenger who could not read this book saw nothing but all manner of pretty pictures in it painted by the sun and shaded by the clouds, whereas to the trained eye these were not pictures at all, but the grimmest and most dead-earnest of reading-matter.

Now when I had mastered the language of this water and had come to know every trifling feature that bordered the great river as familiarly as I knew the letters of the alphabet, I had made a valuable acquisition. But I had lost something, too. I had lost something which could never be restored to me while I lived. All the grace, the beauty, the poetry had gone out of the majestic river! I still keep in mind a certain wonderful sunset which I witnessed when steamboating was new to me. A broad expanse of the river was turned to blood; in the middle distance the red hue brightened into gold, through which a solitary log came floating, black and conspicuous; in one place a long, slanting mark lay sparkling upon the water; in another the surface was broken by boiling, tumbling rings, that were as many-tinted as an opal; where the ruddy flush was faintest, was a smooth spot that was covered with graceful circles and radiating lines, ever so delicately traced; the shore on our left was densely wooded, and the somber shadow that fell from this forest was broken in one place by a long, ruffled trail that shone like silver; and high above the forest wall a clean-stemmed dead tree waved a single leafy bough that glowed like a flame in the unobstructed splendor that was flowing from the sun. There were graceful curves, reflected images, woody heights, soft distances; and over the whole scene, far and near, the dissolving lights drifted steadily, enriching it, every passing moment, with new marvels of coloring.

I stood like one bewitched. I drank it in, in a speechless rapture. The world was new to me, and I had never seen anything like this at home. But as I have said, a day came when I began to cease from noting the glories and the charms which the moon and the sun and the twilight wrought upon the river’s face; another day came when I ceased altogether to note them. Then, if that sunset scene had been repeated, I should have looked upon it without rapture, and should have commented upon it, inwardly, after this fashion: This sun means that we are going to have wind to-morrow; that floating log means that the river is rising, small thanks to it; that slanting mark on the water refers to a bluff reef which is going to kill somebody’s steamboat one of these nights, if it keeps on stretching out like that; those tumbling ‘boils’ show a dissolving bar and a changing channel there; the lines and circles in the slick water over yonder are a warning that that troublesome place is shoaling up dangerously; that silver streak in the shadow of the forest is the ‘break’ from a new snag, and he has located himself in the very best place he could have found to fish for steamboats; that tall dead tree, with a single living branch, is not going to last long, and then how is a body ever going to get through this blind place at night without the friendly old landmark.

No, the romance and the beauty were all gone from the river. All the value any feature of it had for me now was the amount of usefulness it could furnish toward compassing the safe piloting of a steamboat. Since those days, I have pitied doctors from my heart. What does the lovely flush in a beauty’s cheek mean to a doctor but a ‘break’ that ripples above some deadly disease. Are not all her visible charms sown thick with what are to him the signs and symbols of hidden decay? Does he ever see her beauty at all, or doesn’t he simply view her professionally, and comment upon her unwholesome condition all to himself? And doesn’t he sometimes wonder whether he has gained most or lost most by learning his trade?

10 Things You Should Know Before Your First European River Cruise

T wenty-fifth wedding anniversary! Where did the time go? And most importantly, what should we do to celebrate? A few days later, with suspiciously perfect timing, a Viking river cruise advertisement dropped into our mailbox.  

Two decades ago, we tried a Caribbean ocean cruise — big ship, lots of people, so much food and drink — and never did a second one. But a European river cruise sounded appealing: smooth water, a new city every morning on a small ship with less than 200 passengers, top-notch food and a customizable mix of culture, lectures and activities.  

Ten months later, we were flying to Budapest, Hungary to begin our 11-day Passage to Eastern Europe on Viking Cruises. Here are 10 things we learned from our first river cruise: 

1. You’ll Wind Up Feeling Young Again

If you are in your 50s and miss that young and spry feeling, you could do worse than go on a river cruise. We knew the average age would likely skew into the 60s, but we did not anticipate being the youngest couple on our ship. Nor did we mind. Being surrounded by seniors in their 70s and 80s having a great time seeing new places was an inspiration for our own future.   

2.  You Won’t Find Too Many First-Time Cruisers

Those folks a generation ahead of us have been busy. We didn’t stand out just because of our relative youth, but also because this was our first river cruise. Nearly everybody we met had cruised before — not just with Viking, but other lines around the world as well. Ron, a former Army master sergeant, was on his seventh Viking cruise and even admitted to doing the 15-day Grand European Tour from Amsterdam to Budapest twice. 

“I’d do it a third time if they let me do it for free,” he told us.

3. Water Levels May Cause Unexpected Detours

A huge river cruise appeal for my wife was the absence of ocean waves. No waves = no seasickness. But, unlike the ocean, river levels rise and fall. Too high, and the river ships can’t pass under certain bridges. Too low and, like us, the ship may have to stop short of some destinations and passengers will spend extra time on the bus. For us, low water levels triggered shore excursion substitutions in an unexpected Bulgarian city as well as a longer bus ride to Bucharest. Disappointing, but manageable. In other cases, passengers might have to abandon their river ship and bus transfer to an identical one upriver to continue the journey. Be prepared.        

4. Every Day Is Casual Day

We were going to be in Europe, cruising on an upscale boat, and our fellow passengers would be older than us; accordingly, my wife and I planned to dress nicely: collared, button-down shirts and sleek sweaters and blouses. Viking emphasizes no formal dinners and a relaxed vibe, but I still almost brought a jacket for the evenings. 

I’m glad I didn’t. Our fellow passengers overwhelmingly embraced comfortable casual — bright, plush sneakers; jeans; shorts and even a few Harley T-shirts — it was all okay.  There were definitely people like us, avoiding the jeans and sneakers look, and if you want to dress nicer, go for it, but it’s not necessary.

5.  Embrace Conversation

If you fear initiating new conversations with new people several times a day, a river cruise might intimidate you. Fear not. Most of our experienced river cruiser passengers seemed to crave meeting new people and were easy to chat with.      

In our first 24 hours on the ship, I listened to a tale about an encounters with Perth Australia gold miners gone wrong, met a guy who got a Purple Heart when his helicopter crashed in Vietnam, admired the mangled fingers of a 75-year-old New England hockey player and listened to our dinner companion say, “I would not have married my husband if I had to do it again.” With him right there.

Yes, river cruise food is delicious. Nearly every meal featured regional specialties of the neighboring country. A few minutes before dinner seating began, the chief chef would describe his culinary creations to select from that evening. It was like a halftime speech. He’d finish up and we’d all race (or, in some cases, shuffle) out of the lounge to the dining room, pumped up for the coming delicacies.  

Yet, as good as the shipboard food may be, take some time to…

7. Eat Locally

Don’t confine yourself to only the refined ship meals. A few steps away from your docked ship you’ll probably find flavorful local food well worth nibbling on. Some of my favorite meals of our trip were a platter of cevapcici eaten under a portrait of Uncle Tito (the Cold War era Yugoslav leader) in Belgrade and some meltingly lovely pumpkin phyllo pastry in Croatia.  

8. Pace Yourself

With a new city each day and limited time, you can exhaust yourself trying to do too much. At one point, our new friends, Victor and Leslie, admitted that they signed up for too many excursions. There is only so much anyone can sample in a few hours or even a day, and we accepted that. A travel memoir I found in the ship’s library, Far and Away , gave a satisfying response to that dilemma: “Always leave something for next time, something to tempt you back.”  You’re on a cruise; make some time to simply relax on the sundeck or terrace, admiring the views. 

9.  Find a Less-Traveled River

Ever heard of the Iron Gates of the Danube? I hadn’t either. Every passenger was out taking photos as our ship slipped into this dramatic gorge between Serbia and Romania. At one point, the giant face of an ancient Dacian king carved into the rock wall stared back at us.   

Other European rivers plying well-traveled countries like Germany, the Netherlands and France host most river cruise traffic, but we delighted in discovering more unfamiliar East European countries. Every day gave us new stories and perspectives, often containing history that we’d never heard of. Nor was all of this history ancient. On successive days we got thoughtful perspectives from a local Croatian tour guide and then her Serbian counterpart on the 1990s Balkan War. When choosing your cruise itinerary, consider the lesser-known places. 

10. Cabin Class Choices Matter

After choosing a cruise date and itinerary, you pick your cabin class. I agonized over that. Budget limitations dictated the cheapest, er, “most affordable” cabin for us, down on the lower deck and featuring only a narrow window just above the waterline. My online research emphasized that most of our cabin time would be at night when it was dark anyway.  Moreover, even during daylight hours, the ship would often be parked next to a dock or sandwiched between other cruise ships with someone else’s window inches away.  

All of that was indeed true. And once on board, it was obvious that even the most spacious cabins could not compare to the nearly 360-degree views from the outdoor terrace and top sundeck where passengers gathered in the sunny afternoons. Still, I would have enjoyed more window space in our stateroom. Next cruise maybe I’ll spring for the fancy veranda cabin.

Leftover settlement money must be partly allocated for the environmental protection of the Delaware River and its tributaries, or to provide drinking water to communities in need.

Residents and businesses interested in the settlement must file a claim by August 16, and those who object to the settlement or wish to exclude themselves to file their own lawsuit must do so by July 17.
