Just because you’re friends doesn’t mean you share ALL of the same interests or have similar travel styles.

One of the biggest disadvantages of going on holiday with friends is that at some point you will likely disagree on what exactly you want to do.

You might want to see different attractions, do different activities, or even travel at different speeds.

3. Isolation

You may isolate yourself with your best friend which means you miss out on meeting some awesome people.

Having conversations with the locals and other random people is something that everyone should do while travelling.

But by having another person with you, you may find yourself just talking to your friend and not making an effort to talk to anyone else.

In fact, certain dietary requirements might alter where you can eat and even where you can travel to at all.

Say one of you is vegetarian, and one of you is lactose intolerant. Either one of those dietary requirements might close off a part of the world to you, due to the culinary norms of some countries.

It’s almost impossible to avoid meat or fish in some rural areas of the world, and it’s hard to avoid both meat AND dairy in some countries such as Albania , for example.

If you and those you’re travelling with have more than one set of dietary needs, then you might find that your options for where to go on holiday with friends are more limited.

Luckily, more and more dietary options are becoming available around the world, especially in major cities.

But if even one member of your party has specific dietary requirements, it might take some extra planning ahead of time, and may even mean you miss out on trying all the local cuisine.

Sometimes having rich friends is great. Sometimes it can cause a lot of tension in a group.

This can happen if your holiday gang ends up visiting expensive sites, dining at high-end restaurants, or staying in five-star hotels.

Not everyone can afford to throw as much money around, and sometimes not everyone can speak up against it with a cheaper alternative. It’s hard when it feels like you might “spoil the fun.”

I find that when you’re travelling with friends, there’s sometimes a tendency for everyone to want to do everything.

Everyone wants to be the navigator, everyone wants to drive, everyone wants to lead the group. If you know that someone is better qualified, let them take that role if they want it!

It can be infuriating to find yourselves being led into the unknown by an enthusiastic amateur when you happen to be travelling with a trained hiker/tracker, for example.

If someone has the skills, let them pay the bills as it were. Your talents will come into play at some point on your journey, don’t worry!

Young people prefer to travel with friends, it is exciting to have a kindred spirit with you for sharing the emotions from the places visited and the sites observed. Here’s advice on how to turn a simple “my best trip” essay into a story that will inspire others to explore the world.

Welcome home! Now that you’re back from your trip, you’d like to share it with others in a travel essay. You’re a good writer and a good editor of your work, but you’ve never tried travel writing before. As your potential reader, I have some advice and some requests for you as you write your travel experience essay.

Trip Essays: What to Avoid

Please don’t tell me everything about your trip. I don’t want to know your travel schedule or the names of all the castles or restaurants you visited. I don’t care about the plane trip that got you there (unless, of course, that trip is the story).

I have a friend who, when I return from a trip, never asks me, “How was your trip?” She knows that I would give her a long, rambling answer: “… and then … and then … and then.” So instead, she says, “Tell me about one thing that really stood out for you.” That’s what I’d like you to do in this travel essay you’re writing.

The Power of Compelling Scenes

One or two “snapshots” are enough—but make them great. Many good writers jump right into the middle of their account with a vivid written “snapshot” of an important scene. Then, having aroused their readers’ interest or curiosity, they fill in the story or background. I think this technique works great for travel writing; at least, I would rather enjoy a vivid snapshot than read through a day-to-day summary of somebody’s travel journal.

Write About a Trip Using Vivid Descriptions

Take your time. Tell a story. So what if you saw things that were “incredible,” did things that were “amazing,” observed actions that you thought “weird”? These words don’t mean anything to me unless you show me, in a story or a vivid description, the experience that made you want to use those adjectives.

I’d like to see the place, the people, or the journey through your eyes, not someone else’s. Please don’t rewrite someone else’s account of visiting the place. Please don’t try to imitate a travel guide or travelogue or someone’s blog or Facebook entry. You are not writing a real travel essay unless you are describing, as clearly and honestly as possible, yourself in the place you visited. What did you see, hear, taste, say? Don’t worry if your “take” on your experience doesn’t match what everyone else says about it. (I’ve already read what THEY have to say.)

The Importance of Self-Editing Your Trip Essay

Don’t give me your first draft to read. Instead, set it aside and then reread it. Reread it again. Where might I need more explanation? What parts of your account are likely to confuse me? (After all, I wasn’t there.) Where might you be wasting my time by repeating or rambling on about something you’ve already told me?

Make me feel, make me laugh, help me learn something. But don’t overdo it: Please don’t preach to me about broadening my horizons or understanding other cultures. Instead, let me in on your feelings, your change of heart and mind, even your fear and uncertainty, as you confronted something you’d never experienced before. If you can, surprise me with something I didn’t know or couldn’t have suspected.

You Can Do It: Turning Your Trip into a Great Travel Experience Essay

I hope you will take yourself seriously as a traveler and as a writer. Through what—and how—you write about just a small portion of your travel experience, show me that you are an interesting, thoughtful, observant person. I will come back to you, begging for more of your travel essays.

Advantages and Disadvantages of Traveling with Friends

The idea of traveling to another country with your friends sounds like a dream come true! While there are certainly a lot of advantages when going abroad with friends, keep in mind each individuals travel-styles, personalities, likes and dislikes. Whether you get the chance to share this experience with a good friend or not, here are some of the advantages and disadvantages to going abroad with your friends.

Advantage: Knowing someone abroad!

Going abroad can be intimidating or scary. Moving to another country for the summer, semester or academic year can sometimes be lonely, and life-changing experiences are fun to share with a friend, which brings security and comfort to what might otherwise be an isolating experience.

Disadvantage: No New Friends

You might not be as independent as you would be if you didn’t know anyone. Instead of making new friends, you and your friend may end up isolating yourselves from interacting with the local community or the rest of your travel group. While traveling with a friend doesn’t automatically mean you won’t make new friends, it might impact your willingness to try.

Advantage: Fixed Travel Companion and Roommate

Creating memories with a friend abroad makes them that much more special! Plus, in the event you have to share a room, it can put you at ease knowing you’ll be sharing a space with someone you already feel comfortable with.

Disadvantage: Irritating one another

The downside of spending a lot of time with one person -- you might work each other’s last nerve! We all know this could happen when you surround yourself by the same person nonstop!

Advantage: Shared Interests and Habits

Already knowing each other means you both may have similar tastes, which makes studying, traveling, and eating that much easier to do.

Disadvantage: Limiting Your Adventurous Spirit

Your friend may not have the same adventurous spirit to try something brand new that you want to do. Or worse, you may find yourself having to do things you don't have any interest in (or a budget for), just to go along with your friend.

Advantage: Making Friends with your Friends’ Friends!

Knowing someone who is connected or has friends in your host country means you’ll meet and gain new friends, too.

Disadvantage: Only Speaking English

If you stick to your friend during your entire time abroad it may be easier to not hold yourself accountable to speaking the local language. Only speaking English without being ‘forced’ to practice could impact your ability to learn the language more quickly.

Going abroad is a transformative experience, and it’s one we all wish we could share with the people in our lives we care about the most. But sometimes, it’s missing those people and being on our own that makes the experience have the impact that it does. Just make sure you both understand what this experience represents for each other, and what you each hope to gain from it so that you can support one another 100%.

Is it Better to Travel with Friends or with Parents?

Holidays are events that virtually everyone looks forward to – particularly the ones in summer when the weather is favorable. Holidays come along with a lot of fun activities, but many young people believe that holidays spent with friends are better than those spent with family.

Writing about this topic wouldn’t be a first of its kind, as several articles, particularly in the education niche, have covered this topic. Actually it’s a popular essay topic among youth.

While a number of people prefer spending their holidays on their own, flying solo, this post is not targeted at them. This post focuses on addressing the common contention among students, especially teenagers, as to whether holidays are best spent with family or friends. Obviously, most will go for spending their holidays with friends since they pretty much see their parents daily and would prefer a fun summer away from their routine, with their friends.

This post would compare a typical travel experience with parents, then with friends and in the end, conclude from a neutral point of view, which is better.

A Travel Experience with Parents.

Apart from the traditional “You get to spend time with family!” remark which many essay writer services like CA.Edubirdie in Canada are usually writing about, holidays with parents afford a very good opportunity to actually relax – away from loud music, poor service, booze, etc. Vacations with family also create a bonding opportunity at a slower pace and in a new environment than you would normally have back at home. Given that you spend a lot of time in school, although doing a lot of essay writing, you see your friends quite often, and a family vacation would help reconnect with the family, which can become an absolutely refreshing experience.

When you spend holidays with family, you tend to create memories that will last a lifetime and will definitely spring up later during family dinners, reunions, etc. Vacations also help you see the world from a newer perspective – as a family, together. Together, you could pick up and integrate new cultures or routines that everyone loved on the trip and works for everyone. It is a good avenue for the family to learn from the experience gathered.

It is not an unknown fact that traveling is often expensive, but obviously, traveling with parents will reduce costs by a mile. All costs relating to transport, housing and food are usually taken care of by your parents if you are going on a trip with them. Big plus! If the vacation or travel involves shopping, then you just might get some free bucks to shop for yourself. It is a good way to have a whole new experience at little or no cost at all to yourself.

A Travel Experience with Friends.

Even before  embarking on the trip , the planning process for the trip itself is fun and you get to do that together with your friends. Making a list of fun events, writing about places to visit, things to be done, shopping for items, and the communication back and forth itself makes up half the fun of the whole trip, because of the excitement it builds.

Traveling with friends is a good way to actually have fun without any form of distractions. Most of the times spent with friends are either during work periods or when school is in session. Traveling or going away on a vacation really allows you to have all the fun you want to without having to worry about having to study, complete an assignment or a task at work. So apart from having fun, you get to do away with the everyday stress of school and work.

On  teenage holidays without parents , a lot more than fun memories are shared. Traveling with friends pushes you to be independent and exposes you to a whole new set of skills you may not have even known you had. Not only would you be having new experiences with the people and culture of your destination – the experiences of your friends backed up with their various cultures would add a whole new spice to the trip.

Lots of experts recommend that kids and teenagers are allowed to spend time with their friends, away from home, as it aids their development. On a trip with a couple of friends, you get to cross off a couple of things from your bucket list. Spending time away from your parents at a young age will drive you to try out new things you have always wanted to try, and who can better drive you to explore and try out new things than your friends?

Tip : Not only would you be having new experiences with the people and culture of your destination – the experiences of your friends backed up with their various cultures would add a whole new spice to the trip. In conclusion, whether you spend holidays with family or go on teenage holidays without parents, both come with their own pros, cons and similarities. Both experiences can be insightful and empowerment to choose your own travel patterns. Traveling with parents can be essentially cheaper, but with friends could be more expensive although the option of sharing is available. Both experiences could also be fun depending on the context, so, in the end, it all boils down to interest and what every teenager or individual expects in a travel experience.

I guess I have to say “BOTH”. For me, traveling is tied in with looking for new experiences. Furthermore, these experiences become considerably more fun when you can share them with an old buddy.

WHAT A RIOT!

Travelling with friends is a whole different dynamic than travelling with family or with a partner.

It seemed unavoidable that our trip turns was going to be filled with a  series of mishaps, complications, and unending laughter.

     It is a crazy adventure and one that I have not experienced in a while.

The last time I went on a trip with friends was in May 2011….come October 2015, here we are, six friends heading out to Barcelona for a destination birthday. Four of us flew from Vienna, two from London.

The plan was to meet at Barcelona El Prat Airport, then head over to our Air BnB Apartment. Needless to say, our plans didn’t turn out to be so simple. 

I left my darling hubby and little one and embarked on my two-hour flight from Vienna with two of my besties, and headed off to Barcelona. The flight was great. We talked for the duration of the flight even though it was 06:30 am and we said all we were going to do was sleep on the flight.

Arrival in Barcelona would bring on the adventure! We couldn’t find the rest of our “crew” at the El-Prat Airport. After almost two hours of searching, looking, turning on roaming, sending text messages, Whatsapp, Facebook messages in order to find each other, we finally made our way to the apartment. Got there at 11:30/12:00, our check-in was at 15:00, but at this point nothing could faze us.

           We were hungry and ready for TAPAS TAPAS TAPAS! 

It was 25 degrees (centigrade) outside, sunny, and I felt a sense of calm wash over me. I had hardly slept for three days before this trip, wondering if I was doing the right thing for leaving my baby at home for TWO NIGHTS!!!  I know it seems like a short time, but for a new mum, and likely all mums, the first time away from your child, no matter their age it was going to be tough!

So grateful for a supporting hubby who knew I needed a break. OK – back to the story.

We had lunch at Trobador  at Rambla Catalunya. For me, t he food was a 6 on a scale of 1-10.

It is at times hard to figure out how much food will actually be served on the Tapas plate. Having been to Barcelona before, I knew that at times all you get are little finger bites, other times it is a plate large enough food to fill you for a few hours!

Walked around, took pictures of some of the sights along the way, went back to our apartment and relaxed. Stopped briefly for our group selfie.

That night, after a few more miscommunication, false directions from the receptionist, and a crazy walk and taxi ride, we had dinner at Boca Chica , in the heart of Barcelona’s Eixample.

The website does not do the restaurant justice for its’ grandness, but definitely worth going to if you are ever in Barcelona.    Make reservations as you won’t be seated without.

This restaurant was a recommendation of a friend of a friend. The restaurant is very…..antique, unusual, and the bathroom is the best place in the establishment. Sounds crazy, but it is the truth!

I LOVED the tapas, however the main course was very mediocre. In my opinion…..overpriced, but worth it for the ambiance!

Boca Chica has four floors, we ended up missing out on a floor because the place is so big. We had drinks after dinner in the Lounge, which we confused for the Bar. Too many cocktails maybe – it did turn out to be the better choice though.

Did I mention that one of us set the menu on fire with the candle placed on the table? OH GOSH!

Beautiful Barcelona At Night

Our last  day in Barcelona was spent sightseeing on the Hop On Hop Off bus, which was a great way to see the main sights of the city. There are two routes, East and West, so depending on what you want to see, you make your choice.

We chose the East Route which takes you to the Gothic Quarter, the Aquarium, the seafront, Agbar Tower, the Sagrada Familia and Park Güell.

Of course, you cannot visit Barcelona without seeing the Sagrada Familia !

Although the final stages of construction are still underway, the beauty of this building is beyond fascinating, over 100 years since its foundation stone was laid and 90 years after its designer, Spanish architect Antoni Gaudi died. 

We also visited the Park Güell which is absolutely gorgeous if you visit on a day with great weather and sunshine. Greeted by the Gaudí dragon fountain at the entrance, you can take a beautiful walk through the park with stunning gardens and amazing scenery.

We met this guy on the way up – he insisted on a kiss – this is a close as he got.

Did you notice that he is just sitting there in the air?

Once you get to the top the park, you find a terraced area with a wonderful view of Barcelona City.

We had a great day out, went on a quick shopping spree then headed back to our apartment.

Dinner was more relaxed as we were all exhausted. I decided on taking an early flight home on Sunday, I missed my boys too much. So first thing in the morning I headed back to Vienna, while the others stayed on for a last full day in Barca, before heading home on evening flights.

They had a blast at the beach – and I got to come home to hug and kiss my boys again.

This sounds like so much fun! I don’t have a kid of my own but I left my husband behind as I went to Tulum last year with my friends. I love him and the experience would have been wonderful with him there but there’s something special about sharing experiences with your friends. Traveling with friends is a very memorable moment. Sagrada Familia is love. I’d love to visit this one too with hubby. Me and my friends don’t always plan our vacay because the more weplan it, it is often cancelled ha-ha so when we’re all together that’s it we just decide on the spot where to go and that is always a crazy and fun bonding 🙂

Traveling with friends would definitely come with mishaps but tons of laughter as well! Discovering new places with friends is indeed fun and memorable especially if you travel in group. It can be real enjoyable as well if you will do things for the first time like tasting new delicacy or trying the zipline, for instance.

Travelling with friends is certainly the best activity one can try. You don’t just travel with them but you make good memories too! How I wish my friends could spend at least a 2 day vacay abroad but unfortunately, it’s quite expensive. But if ever, I’ll surely grab the opportunity to spend time with them at least once in a while.

Yes Robert – The stories we get to tell later are the fun parts because you get to travel back in time while telling the story and relive the mishaps and drama in a light and funny way.

I think traveling with friends is a lot of fun as long as you have common goals. If someone wants to shop while another person wants to go tour the country, I think that could be hard to have a really fun trip! I love being with people who have similar interests as I do so that I feel comfortable stating my opinion and seeing what I want to see. It sounds like you had a great trip with friends!

Yes Alison, this is one of those times when you have to choose your friends carefully. You cannot travel with certain friends, it will only bring stress and drama. Some friends are great to travel with because you are guaranteed an amazing time. You need to be free around those who you surround yourself with.

Friends Who Travel Together Form Closer Bonds And Have Better Experiences

Embarking on a journey with your friends is an unpredictable voyage that every person should experience at least once in his or her life.

Exploring a different country, conquering fears together and discovering new perspectives ultimately progresses our relationships to levels never imagined possible.

Even when we return from the trip we took with friends, we will always keep those golden memories and share them for the rest of our lives. Nobody could ever take those away.

So, if you're able to convince your friends to pack their bags and start a new chapter across the seas, keep them close: The friends who travel with you will be some of the greatest friends you could possibly ever ask for.

This is partially because the experiences you will go through while traveling abroad with a companion are unparalleled to anything you encounter on a daily basis.

But it's also because you will develop a friendship and a bond that is stronger from the learning and traveling you have done together.

Sharing incredible experiences with friends makes those moments matter more.

When we travel with our friends, those memories become even more priceless in our bank of golden experiences.

The moments we hold so dear to our hearts are often the ones that were celebrated with some of our closest companions, and apparently sharing these experiences has everything to do with it.

The Association For Psychological Science reports on a study that tested the links between shared experiences and intensity of feelings and emotions.

The study looked at 23 female college students who were brought in to experience the taste of chocolate with a partner.

Researchers found that when the students were paired together to chomp down on some chocolate, they reported liking the taste much more than when they were told to eat it alone.

Not only that, but study participants noted feeling more in tune with each other, as well as enjoying the taste of the chocolate more, when eating in pairs.

Researchers note that this is a huge finding when it comes to shared experience research because it is a clear indicator that our experiences are intensified when paired with someone else.

So you can imagine how incredible it would feel to land in a new country and start a new adventure with your friends by your side.

Erica Boothby, lead researcher at Yale University, tells the Association ,

A pleasant experience that goes unshared is a missed opportunity to focus on the activity we and others are doing and give it a boost.

When traveling with friends, we're more likely to make exciting memories.

It's important to travel the world at a young age, and doing it with friends certainly makes it a whole lot more exciting.

At this point of our lives, we should be experiencing the diversity of our world to make us as cultured and educated as possible. But being so young can make it difficult to travel entirely alone, and we're always more confident with a companion by our side.

A study called Meet the Millennials was recently published by PGAV Destinations and shows Millennials are quite different than any other generation when it comes to travel.

According to the nationwide survey, 58 percent of young travelers explore the world with their friends, which is a whopping 20 percent more than any other age group.

And we're not just trying to lie on the beach: Nearly 80 percent of all Millennials surveyed prefer to have an entertaining vacation, and 68 percent of us want to do something interactive.

There is need therefore to explore whether it is better to travel alone or with a tour group. The essay shall endeavor to compare and contrast travelling alone with travelling in a group and uncover the benefits and drawbacks associated with both of these two forms of travelling.

Travelling Alone or in a Group: Pros & Cons

Traveling in a group allows one to meet new friends and exchange experiences. This helps to add fun to travelling because of the many new ideas that the individual members of the group comes with. In addition, diversity in terms of the experiences of the travelers enables one to appreciate their unique cultural heritage.

On the other hand, travelling in a group denies one the chance of being alone because you are always surrounded by other people. As such, one cannot avoid annoying travelers and you have to learn how to deal with them. In contrast, traveling alone gives one the freedom to explore new experiences without restrictions. As such, can do what pleases him/her without fear that others will criticize him/her.

Travelling in a group also limits one’s chances of meeting new people because it is far much easier to approach an individual as opposed to a group. Travelling alone enables one to become flexible in terms of for example how you spend your day, or what you eat. However, there is the danger of boredom and you have no one to share your experiences with.

Travelling in a group is also beneficial in that it allows you to lower your cost of travelling. This is because there is the possibility of sharing such facilities as the guest room, splitting food and drinks bills, and travelling costs as well. For example, it is much cheaper for a group of 5 travelers to split the traveling cost of hiring a cab, as opposed o a single traveler who would be expected to pay a similar amount for the same distance.

On the other hand, travelling in a group could result in an issue of conflict when it comes to the issue of offsetting bills. For example, some members of the group may decline to pay the stipulated amount of money because in their opinion, they have not incurred the costs that they are expected to foot. In addition, travelling in a group also denies one the flexibility of choosing for example where to stay or what to eat because you have to reach a compromise with the rest of the group.

Travelling in a group therefore puts one in danger of falling prey to a “herd” mentality whereby one ends up agreeing with the wishes of the majority as opposed to saying exactly what you want. On the other hand, travelling alone gives one the needed freedom to choose what he/she wants.

Moreover, traveling in a group allows one to enhance his/her communication and personal relations. Consequently, one gets to learn how best to get along with others, and this ensures that throughout the trip, you are never lost for company. In contrast, there are individuals who do not generally get along well with others and as such, they prefer to remain alone. They are therefore better off traveling alone to avoid straining their communication and personal relations.

Whether one is traveling alone or in a group, there are various advantages and disadvantages associated with each of the two travel arrangements. Regardless of the choice that an individual traveler makes, one should always ensure that they settle on the option that will result in the most fulfilling experience.

You can plan an itinerary, but you can’t plan for people. And while we build the trips, it’s you guys that really write the stories.

We sent a call-out to our online Intrepid family, asking for tales of travellers, friends and couples who had met on one of our adventures. The response was a little overwhelming. Here are a few of our favourite entries.

Amanda & Lee

“I met my husband, Lee, on a three week Intrepid trip through Vietnam over Christmas in 2003. He was there to explore his country of birth, having left Vietnam more than 20 years earlier as a refugee.  We had an amazing group of people on that trip, and Lee and I became very close friends. Afterwards I returned to the UK, but we stayed in touch for three years.

“We arranged to meet up again in October 2006 on an Intrepid trip through India, and the friendship turned to romance. We took a three-month break and travelled through Africa, Thailand and Laos, including another Intrepid camping trip in Tanzania. Lee proposed in 2009 and we got married in 2010.

“In March 2012 I gave birth to our daughter, and baby number two is due this year. Starting a family has slowed our travel down a bit, but we still like to hit the road. Our little girl has visited seven countries on four continents in her first two years, and we’re looking forward to travelling as a family with Intrepid one day.” – Amanda.

“Sweat dripping from my brow (and everywhere else), we clambered up an incredibly steep staircase – not an easy feat for someone my height. At the top we were greeted by Fes’s call to prayer echoing across the rooftops and a lush garden with a spattering of cushions and chairs. Our leader had once again outdone our request for dinner with a view – an absolute oasis from the dusty streets below.

“As we all melted into the cushions, we were offered mint tea – only one taker, the rest weren’t in the mood to totally dissolve. Most grabbed their menus and went for the makeshift ‘Westerner in Moroccan heat’ fan – though my eyes darted left-to–right in search of something to take the edge off a long day traipsing the medina below. I received a nudge from my left. There sat Gayanne and Leslie, two best friends from Melbourne. They both grinned and Lesley’s eyes greeted mine with a wink as Gayanne held out a silver hip flask, gesturing to the soft drink I’d begrudgingly ordered.

“There might have been a number of years separating us, but they were definitely an unexpected bonus and having them on the trip absolutely made it. To this day we continue the flask sharing.” – Dom.

“I’d never met someone from Belarus before and there was something about Denis the outset. He was wearing black leather pants for god’s sake – in Addis-freakin’-Ababa. His khaki shirt was unbuttoned to the naval and crocodile-teeth necklaces were looped around his neck. He made a point of drinking beer at breakfast. But this was no reason not to dislike him.

“And damned if I was going to be out-manned by this yahoo. I grudgingly accepted my allocated tent buddy’s offer of a breakfast beer… and so began my first Belorussian bromance. Totally earnest and 100% eccentric, no man has ever made me laugh like Denis. His English consisted entirely of malapropisms. His jokes, always told with utmost animation, made no sense whatsoever. In a quiet moment, he once confided to me that his life’s ambition was to be abducted by aliens. Going by his Facebook page, this has yet to happen.” – Taz.

“Last June, I decided to take a long overdue holiday. The plan was to have a good break, expand my mind and hopefully meet some travel buddies. After hearing about a friend’s Intrepid experience, I decided to book an Intrepid trip to Vietnam and Cambodia.

“I was a little apprehensive, but I needn’t have worried. Not only did I have an awesome holiday, with some life-changing experiences and new friends thrown in, I met the girl I love. Emmy was travelling with friends and, like me, had itchy feet to see something new. We gradually got to know one another over the course of the trip, and by the end we were having a full-blown holiday romance.

“Now, only 10 months since we first met in Ho Chi Minh City, we’re living together in Auckland. When I was booking my Intrepid trip nearly a year ago, I couldn’t have foreseen the changes that would be ahead. I left my job, packed up my house and I’m now living in New Zealand with the girl of my dreams. I think it’s fair to say this was a life-changing experience.” – Brett.

Olly & Ergun

“Whilst attempting to navigate the streets of Istanbul’s Old Town a couple of years back, I had a chance meeting with a guy that would turn out to become one of my best mates. I was completely lost and trying to find this little restaurant I’d heard of. After hours of pounding the pavement, I gave up and asked a guy who was standing out front of a shop.

“He was about the same age as me, mid-twenties, and as soon as I could even finish the name of the place, he started walking off and beckoned for me to follow him. The place was only five minutes away – and the guy asked if I minded if he grabbed a bite to eat with me. He was asking loads of questions about my life, what I was doing in Istanbul and that kind of stuff, and it turned out we had loads in common. Ergun was his name, and we ended up talking smack in that little restaurant over a couple of kebabs for hours (the conversation lasted much longer than the kebabs).

“We moved on from the restaurant and headed to a bar in Nevizade. A few of Ergun’s mates came down and we proceeded to quench our collective thirst. It was one of the best nights out I’d had in ages. That was my first time in Istanbul – and I’ve since been back twice and caught up with Ergun. The last time I went back with my girlfriend, and she and I shared a traditional Turkish feast with Ergun. It’s awesome to have a mate on standby whenever I fancy a trip to Istanbul!” – Olly.

Eliza & Bori

“I booked my first Intrepid trip to Italy a few years ago. I’d just moved to the UK and I couldn’t find anyone who wanted to travel with me. It was my first group tour, and needless to say I was a little apprehensive, especially about who I’d be travelling with. But at the welcome dinner on the first night I happened to sit next to a hilarious Hungarian girl called Bori. Within ten minutes we were giggling like old friends and spent the rest of the holiday laughing, sneaking out for midnight treats and sharing far too much wine. I don’t quite know how it happened, but we became the best of friends within just two weeks.

“When the trip was done we promised to organise another holiday. A few months later I flew to Hungary to surprise her for her birthday ­– we went to the Sziget (an amazing music festival in Budapest) and I spent time with her family in her home town, Gyor.

“I’ve since moved back to Australia and she’s moved to Hong Kong. We haven’t seen each other for a few years now but we’re still such good friends. We’ve helped each other through breakups, degrees and weird jobs – I’m trying desperately to find a way to get to Hong Kong to see her as we speak! I still can’t believe such a friendship grew out of a little holiday six years ago!” – Eliza.

“I’ve met many amazing people on the road, but a four-legged friend following close at my heels was the best connection I formed on my last Intrepid trip in Sri Lanka. I’m a massive dog lover, so I was delighted to be greeted by Gus on my arrival at a tea estate where I was to stay for the next two nights. As I set off for a walk around the estate, Gus followed close behind and we immediately became best friends. He had a slight limp but no walk was too hard for him.

“I climbed to the top of a pretty decent hill and he beat me to the lookout – I was bit worried about him getting too close to the edge! When it was time to leave, Gus jumped on my backpack as I was walking down the stairs in what I think was an attempt to stop me. Our friendship only lasted two days, and I know I won’t see Gus again, but he really lived up to that ‘man’s best friend’ title.” – Amanda.
