Are you dreaming of starting your own balloon business? If so, you’re in the right place, as I have over seven years of experience in the industry, I have witnessed firsthand how the world of balloons can transform lives and create thriving businesses. Today, I am excited to guide you through the essential steps to start your own balloon business from scratch and pave your way to generating over six figures per year. Let’s dive in!

As an event planner and designer, I had the privilege of creating beautiful weddings and galas, but I longed for something more hands-on and creatively fulfilling. Through exploring floral and event design, I stumbled upon the world of balloons, and it instantly clicked.

I was one of the first organic balloon artists in Los Angeles, which started today’s trend. I didn’t have all of the tools and resources you artists have now, but it made me get more creative with my craft as I am self-taught.

My journey as a balloon artist has been truly transformative. It has allowed me to unleash my creativity, connect with people on joyous occasions, and experience the fulfillment that comes from bringing happiness to others. Along the way, I have learned valuable lessons that have helped me grow my business to generate over six figures per year. Now, I want to share those insights with you. So let’s get started! 

Step 1: Market Research:

Before launching your business, conduct thorough market research to understand the demand for balloons in your target area. Identify your potential customers, study their preferences, and explore the competition. This knowledge will enable you to tailor your services and stand out in the market.

Knowing your competition in and out helps you build a strong foundation for your business. Trust me, you don’t want to throw yourself into this without knowing what you’re going up against. Also, make sure you can make a living in the area you are servicing to have a profitable business. 

For example, if you live in a small town in Ohio, don’t expect to charge the same rates as someone in Cleveland. The demographics are different, and people are more willing to pay what the artist rates are. Same here in Los Angeles, we have a different demographic here, and the price of living is extremely high, so the pricing will have to follow suit to stay in business. 

Step 2: Business Concept:

Define your business concept and determine the type of balloon styling you want to specialize in. Whether it’s an organic bespoke design, premium balloon decor, or classic balloon arrangements, find your unique niche and develop a compelling offering.

You’re style and designs will develop over time if you practice and try to enhance your designs with every installation you book. My style is more bespoke (creative) with an organic feel which is the most popular design style. Also, with this style, you can price on a custom-based scale as you will cater to the client’s needs and desires for their specific event. 

Premium and classic designs can have a price list, as the designs and pricing don’t change unless you add custom elements. 

Step 3: Business Plan:

Create a comprehensive business plan that outlines your goals, target market, marketing strategies, financial projections, and operational details. A well-structured plan will serve as your roadmap and guide your business decisions.

I know, I know, this can be the boring part of starting your balloon business, but it is needed. Many balloon designers skip this part and go straight to launching their business without a strategy or knowledge of how they will accomplish their business goals. Don’t be that kind of designer. Start smart so you don’t have to backtrack later down the line. 

Step 4: Legal Requirements:

Research and fulfill all legal requirements to start your balloon business. Register your business, obtain any necessary permits or licenses, and ensure compliance with local regulations.

Don’t skip this step, either. You want to ensure your ducks are in a row before you launch. Make sure you check all of the business registration requirements in your start or country so you can comply with all of the rules and regulations to work legally. 

Also, if you plan on working with big brands and venues, you will need to ensure you get business insurance just in case, so you are covered if anything happens at one of your events. 

Step 5: Business Supplies:

Source high-quality balloons, helium tanks, air compressors, ribbons, weights, and other necessary supplies. There are several balloon manufacturers out there you must research to see what vendors are a good fit.

If possible, I would look out for vendors who cater to balloon artists and give wholesale pricing, a great shopping experience, and an easy-to-navigate website with decent shipping rates. Establish relationships with reliable suppliers to ensure a consistent inventory.

Step 6: Pricing Strategy:

Develop a pricing structure that balances your costs, desired profit margins, and market rates. Consider material costs, labor, overhead expenses, and the value you provide to clients. I don’t want to go too deep into pricing as it is a touchy subject, and pricing can vary based on your skills, professionalism, experience, and demographic. This is why you should research your competition to create a comparable pricing structure so you don’t overprice or underprice your clients. When I started in 2017, industry-standard was $35 per foot, which is what it should still be for beginning artists, but if you don’t feel like your designs are up to that level yet, start at $30 per foot and work your way up as you build your confidence so you can make a decent profit. 

Step 7: Building Your Portfolio:

Create a captivating portfolio showcasing your best balloon designs and decorations. Invest in a good quality iPhone or camera, if possible, to capture the essence of your work and demonstrate your expertise to potential clients. When you work with clients with higher-end budgets, they usually have a photographer. I always ask my clients if I can share the images on my social media or website.

Also, invest in professional education to grow your skills even faster. Yes, you can go on Youtube, BUT 75% of Youtubers and TikTokers are DIYers and have no idea what they are doing, which hinders your progress and won’t get you the quality clients you want and need for your business to grow.

Step 8: Marketing and Branding:

Build a strong online presence through a website, social media platforms, and online directories. Develop a cohesive brand identity and marketing strategy to attract and engage your target audience. When you create a strong brand, your business will eventually start selling itself.

At the beginning of starting your business, you will have to put in a lot of work, but it will be worth it when you start getting referrals and returning clients. I don’t have to do too much marketing anymore as I have built a client base which can totally happen if you start with a good foundation from the start. 

Step 9: Networking and Collaboration:

Network with event planners, party venues, and other businesses that can refer clients to you. Collaborate with complementary service providers, such as caterers or photographers, to offer comprehensive event packages. Creating vendor friends has increased my business so much. We all refer to each other business and do collaborations with each other to gain more business. I’m telling you, it’s so beneficial, so get out there and network. 

As a side note, influencers will contact you for a “collaboration.” I honestly don’t know why they call it that, as the balloon designer does all the work. But they can sniff out a new balloon designer from a mile away and ask for FREE services. Please be careful when working with influencers. Some of them don’t have your best interest at heart. To research the influencer before you accept the job, and be strategic. 

Step 10: Exceptional Customer Service:

Provide exceptional customer service at every touchpoint. Respond promptly to inquiries, communicate clearly with clients, deliver on time, and go the extra mile to exceed their expectations. Happy customers will become your biggest advocates and will leave you with tons of reviews to grow your business even more!

South Korea Activists Defy Warning to Fly Balloons Into North

SEOUL (Reuters) - An activist group in South Korea said on Thursday it had flown balloons into North Korea carrying leaflets criticising leader Kim Jong Un, just days after Pyongyang sent thousands of balloons carrying trash in the other direction over the border.

Park Sang-hak, a defector who fled North Korea in 2000, said his group, Fighters For Free North Korea, had launched 10 balloons from the border town of Pocheon with 200,000 flyers, 5,000 USB sticks containing K-pop videos and dramas, and 2,000 $1 notes.

North Korean defectors and activists in South Korea have for decades released balloons carrying anti-Pyongyang leaflets and aid parcels across the heavily fortified frontier.

Park's latest campaign came after North Korea recently said it had sent 3,500 balloons carrying 15 tons of trash into the south. The balloons, in some cases also carrying excrement, sparked tension in border towns and prompted Seoul to suspend a 2018 inter-Korean military pact and resume military activities around the border.

Images provided by Park showed one leaflet consisting of a photograph of Kim and his sister with a note reading: "The enemy of the people Kim Jong Un sent filth and trash to the people of the Republic of Korea, but we defectors send truth and love to our North Korean compatriots," using the South's official name.

Other images showed Park and his colleagues holding balloons carrying packages at night.

"Kim Jong Un has inflicted the worst insult and humiliation on 50 million of our people," the group said in a statement, referring to the trash balloons and vowing to continue sending leaflets until Kim apologised.

South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol, in his Memorial Day speech on Thursday, reaffirmed his pledge to build peace through strength, which he said would help transform the North, restore its peoples' freedom and human rights, and ultimately achieve unification.

The two Koreas are still technically at war after their 1950-53 war ended in an armistice, not a peace treaty, and the North has long denounced defectors as "human scum".

After Seoul warned of restarting blaring loudspeakers along the border after a six-year letup, Pyongyang said it would stop sending trash balloons but pledged to resume the practice if anti-North leaflets arrived again.

South Korea's government said on Wednesday it was monitoring the issue of sending leaflets over the border, though noted that the practice was protected by a ruling on freedom of speech.

Hot air balloon strikes power lines, burning pilot and 2 passengers

LOWELL, Ind. (AP) - A hot air balloon struck power lines before crashing to the ground over the weekend in northwestern Indiana, injuring the pilot and the two passengers, officials said Tuesday.

The balloon contacted the power lines Sunday evening in Hebron, Indiana, about 56 miles (90 kilometers) southeast of Chicago, the Federal Aviation Administration said in an email to The Associated Press.

A flash of light can be seen as the balloon rises past power lines in a video recorded from a vehicle on an adjacent road.

The balloon crashed about 7 p.m. in a field about 13 miles (21 kilometers) southeast of Hebron, according to the Lowell Fire Department. The injured passengers and pilot were inside the balloon’s basket when rescue personnel arrived.

Evidence showed that an electrical current passed from the power lines to the basket, the fire department said in a social media post . All three people suffered burns.

Medical helicopters transported the two passengers to hospitals in Chicago. The balloon’s pilot was taken to a hospital in nearby Crown Point, Indiana. Their names and conditions have not been released.

The FAA described the information as preliminary and said the National Transportation Safety Board is leading an investigation.

Due to how balloons operate and where they can take off and land, their pilots are well aware of the dangers posed by power lines, said Patrick Cannon, president of the Balloon Federation of America.

They also are allowed to fly below 500 feet (152 meters) as long as they stay at least 500 feet from people, houses, animals and other obstacles, he added.

“They deal with power lines all the time and go through a lot of training,” Cannon said. “Power lines can be very difficult to see from the air because they blend in with the terrain.”

LAS VEGAS, Nev. (FOX5) -Some business owners say they aren’t satisfied with changes to the temporary bridge plan for this year’s F1 race.

The Las Vegas Grand Prix announced the new changes today, which were meant to better accommodate nearby businesses.

Businesses in the area say they lost millions from the bridge last year, and are suing to get that money back.

“Last year was absolutely horrible. No one could get into our business or get out,” the owner of Battista’s Hole in the Wall, Randy Markin, says.

Thursday’s announcement stated the bridge will be reduced from four lanes to two.

“It’s a bridge that carries everybody up and over the entrance to my business. You’re making it two lanes instead of four, there’s no difference this year to last year,” the owner of Jay’s Market, Wade Bohn, says.

A Grand Prix Spokesperson says the bridge reduction was determined with Clark County and other emergency management officials, who confirmed that two lanes will provide safe access.

The bridge is also going to go up and be taken down quicker, from ten days to seven days. Also, it will now be up from mid-October to mid-December, compared to last year, when it stayed up until just before the Super Bowl.

“For three months, we’re going to be going through this again, and we’re supposed to feel better about it?” Markin says.

Markin and Bohn say they’re also frustrated by the lack of communication about the new plans from the Las Vegas Grand Prix.

A Grand Prix Spokesperson says they “reached out to all the businesses along the Flamingo bridge and met with the majority of them specific to the bridge reduction.”

Markin and Bohn say differently.

“The first we knew about the bridge was this press release,” Markin says.

Both parties agreed to meet next week.

NEW YORK (AP) — Walmart is offering new perks for its hourly U.S. workers, ranging from a new bonus plan to opportunities to move into skilled trade jobs within the company.

The perks program announced Wednesday comes as the nation’s largest private employer says it’s seeing a decline in worker turnover. But Walmart, like other employers, faces a still-competitive labor market and increasing demands from its employees .

Walmart’s new bonus plan for eligible part-time and full-time U.S. store workers — including those in its pharmacy and Vision Centers — is based on their store’s performance, with the maximum bonus potential also tied to years of experience.

For example, a full-time worker who’s been with Walmart between one year and almost five years can earn a maximum bonus of $350 per year, while a 20-year full-time worker can earn a maximum bonus of $1,000, Walmart said. The plan will be available to 700,000 U.S. workers, the company said.

In January, Walmart announced its U.S. store managers would receive up to $20,000 in Walmart stock grants every year.

The company, based in Bentonville, Arkansas, is also launching a training program for hourly workers in its U.S. stores and supply networks that will give them an opportunity to move into roles in facilities maintenance, refrigeration, heating, ventilation and air conditioning, and automation. Walmart said it is looking to increase these skilled trades workers from 450 to roughly 2,000 in the next two years.

The jobs pay between $19 and $45 per hour, and workers will be paid during the training, the company said. Walmart’s average hourly wage is close to $18, an increase of 30% over the past five years. Walmart’s starting wages for U.S. workers range between $14 and $19 an hour.

The training program is expected to start with 100 workers in the Dallas-Fort Worth area. It is part of the Walmart Academy, one of the largest skill-development programs in the country.

Last month, Walmart reported another quarter of strong results as its low prices pull in shoppers scouring for discounts amid stubbornly high inflation .

Households with incomes exceeding $100,000 have been drawn to the retailer as it upgrades the quality of its items and focuses on providing more convenient ways to shop. Two-thirds of Walmart’s market share gains across the aisles are coming from that group, Walmart said.

Walmart said the skilled trades initiative is similar to a program it announced two years ago that gave employees who work in its distribution and fulfillment centers a chance to become certified Walmart truck drivers through a 12-week program taught by the company’s established drivers.

At the time, it said it was raising pay for its 12,000 truck drivers. The starting range for new drivers is now between $95,000 and $110,000 a year. The retailer said that $87,500 had been the average that new truck drivers could make in their first year.

Walmart spokeswoman Anne Hatfield said the trucker program has produced more than 500 new drivers since launching in the spring of 2022. That’s helped the company navigate an industrywide shortage of truck drivers.

Walmart has similar training and development programs for pharmacy tech and opticians.

Meanwhile, Walmart said Wednesday it is expanded the number of skills certificates available to help fast-track front-line workers into about 100,000 jobs that are higher paying and in demand at the company over the next three years.

In 2020, the company offered five skilled certificates. Now, there are 50. They include topics such as front-line manager leadership, people and business leadership, data science, software development and project management.

Employees can earn the certificates in four months, according to Lo Stomski, Walmart’s senior vice president and chief talent officer.

Walmart highlighted its worker training efforts as it prepares to hold two big events this week. A virtual shareholders’ meeting is set for Wednesday. On Friday, the company is holding a celebration of its workers at Bud Walton Arena in Fayetteville, Arkansas, to recognize Walmart’s employees from around the world as well as shareholders.
