CHEM 1103 - Analysis of an Unknown Chloride

Laboratory Safety Rules

Guidelines for Laboratory Reports

Procedure Notes and Modifications:

Be sure to wear your safety goggles throughout the experiment. Follow the procedure as given in the lab manual. Your TA will demonstrate the proper procedure for performing a titration. Be careful with silver nitrate solutions. They will stain your skin and clothing. Be careful with potassium chromate solutions, they too will stain skin and clothing. If any solutions are spilled, rinse the area with copious amounts of water and clean up the spill. Place all waste solids in the container for waste solids. Place all waste solutions and leftover silver nitrate form your buret in the waste solutions container. DO NOT pour waste down the drain.

For Your Report:

Write and discuss balanced chemical equations for any chemical reactions that occur. Again, you can predict the results of the experiment before you even come to lab. Compare the results from the three runs. Calculate the average of the three determinations. Were your results precise? How could the precision be improved? Complete the advance study assignment for the Calorimetry experiment and attach it to your report. You will do the assignment for the Spectrum lab as a part of the report for that experiment.
