  • Greet and service guests as you complete workload with minimal guest disruption.
  • Deliver accurate and timely merchandise transitions for all areas of the store; adhere to street dates for new merchandise.
  • Ensure all signing, including promotional and planogrammed ISM, is set accurately when the transition is completed.
  • Ensure areas are guest ready and maintain presentation standards as you complete scheduled workload. This includes keeping the salesfloor fully stocked, backstocking excess product and fixtures, zoning, signing and labeling accurately.
  • Understand how operational procedures, like planogram (POG) ties, product capacities and salesfloor quantities impact shortage, profitability, in store replenishment and inventory accuracy.
  • Appropriately use and care for in-store and personal protective equipment; follow equipment control guidelines.
  • Ensure displays are in proper working condition and re-order, if necessary.
  • Have dedicated ownership of select GM areas to ensure sales floor is full, in stock and accurately signed for guests.
  • Conduct weekly price change workload for all GM categories.
  • Complete scans and system audit functions to ensure inventory accuracy.
  • Support guest services such as back up cashier, Order Pick Up (OPU) and Drive Up (DU).
  • Accurately execute all pulls (i.e. daily autofills, CAFs, planogram, out of stock, EXFs, manuals and guest requests) and backstock product from GM efficiently and timely.
  • Complete all backroom daily and weekly audits.
  • Operate power equipment only if certified.
  • Maintain backroom and fixture room organization, location accuracy and follow equipment guidelines.
  • Execute processes accurately with attention to detail, monitor own progress and accurately prioritize tasks.

What is a Learning Specialist?

A learning specialist helps three elementary school students in a reading group.

Some students are natural learners, soaking up all the information presented to them in school with seemingly minimal effort. For other students, learning may be more of a challenge. This has little to do with intelligence or aptitude, and a lot to do with learning disabilities, distractions at home, or behavioral problems that impede education. 

For this reason, many schools and education systems enlist learning specialists; educators who focus their efforts on those students who are falling behind academically. Those interested in understanding what a learning specialist is and what it might look like to pursue a career in the field should consider advanced degrees in education and school administration.

What Does a Learning Specialist Do?

Learning specialists are educators, but rather than working with the general student population, they focus on specifically helping students who struggle in the classroom. Most often, these are students who exhibit either learning disorders or different types of psychiatric or behavioral issues. The learning specialist may work with students individually or in small groups.

Learning Specialist Duties and Responsibilities

The specific responsibilities associated with this position may vary from school to school, or from education system to education system. However, some of the most common learning specialist duties include:

  • Helping students develop academic plans or frameworks that make it easier for them to learn, and to prevent them from falling behind in their studies
  • Educating teachers as well as parents regarding the different types of learning disabilities and challenges that exist
  • Assessing members of the student body to determine which, if any, have learning obstacles and might need extra academic support
  • Updating teachers and parents about the progress of those students who have been struggling or falling behind
  • Providing teachers with resources to support students and promote learning within their classrooms

How to Become a Learning Specialist

For those considering what to do with different types of education degrees , becoming a learning specialist can be a rewarding path. Several steps are involved in becoming one.

Earn a Degree in Education

An important part of being a specialist in this field is gaining exposure to the latest educational models and paradigms. In addition, having a background in education helps earn credibility with other teachers and school administrators. As such, earning a bachelor-level degree in education is required, and moving forward with a more advanced degree is often recommended. An academic background in social work may also be useful in this field.

Obtain a Teaching License

As is the case with many other educators, learning specialists are licensed, which means they must apply for a teaching license at the state level. Requirements vary by state but usually include the completion of an exam. Educators, including specialists, must also renew their licenses every few years, at an interval determined by the state.

Gain Experience in the Classroom

To succeed as a learning specialist, it is important to gain experience working in many types of classrooms spanning different ages and grade levels. In addition, working with different learning philosophies or classroom management styles can be helpful.

Develop Key Skills

Through a combination of classroom learning and hands-on experience, aspiring learning specialists can cultivate the core competencies to positively impact students’ lives. Essential skills in this profession include the following.

  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, encompassing both communication with students as well as teachers, administrators, and parents
  • Problem-solving skills, including the ability to analyze potential learning obstacles and develop pragmatic solutions
  • Extensive knowledge of different pedagogical methods, child development principles, and educational philosophies
  • A passion for helping those in need, and in particular a passion to support students who are struggling academically

Average Learning Specialist Salary

According to December 2022 data from the compensation website Payscale, the median annual learning specialist salary for this position is approximately $60,737.

Several factors can affect compensation, including years of classroom experience, level of education, and geographic location. One of the best ways to earn a competitive salary is to earn an advanced education, such as a master’s degree.

Support Students in Need

For some students, academic work comes easily. For others, learning disabilities, psychiatric problems, and other obstacles can lead to a higher level of challenge and frustration. Thankfully, more and more schools hire specialists who can help struggling students catch up and excel academically.

There are dozens of different medical specialties and even more subspecialties you can pursue. In this guide, we explain them all.

We’ll start with the core 7 that are most common for medical school rotations.

1. Family Medicine

First up is family medicine. Family medicine doctors are the center of primary care. They treat the broadest range of ailments and patients, from newborns to seniors and everything in between. They are not limited to a single organ, disease, or age range. Family medicine is consistently the least competitive medical specialty to pursue and has one of the lowest salaries at just over $250K.

2. Internal Medicine

Next, internal medicine doctors are the generalists of generalists, treating a massive range of medical conditions, whether common or rare, complex or straightforward, acute or chronic. The biggest difference between internal and family medicine is IM doctors only treat adults. Internal medicine is also loaded with subspecialty and fellowship options, which we’ll get to later.

3. Pediatrics

Next, we have pediatrics . Think of this specialty as the equivalent of internal medicine but for younger patients. Pediatricians care for babies, children, and adolescents from birth up to the age of 25. Pediatrics is another one of the least competitive specialties, in part due to its lower average compensation at $250K a year.

OB/GYN covers both obstetrics and gynecology. Obstetrics is the medical and surgical management of pregnancy, whereas gynecology is the medical and surgical management of the female reproductive tract. OB/GYN doctors see patients through puberty, adult life, pregnancy, menopause, and beyond.

Surgery is a very broad medical specialty. Surgeons use manual techniques and medical instruments to physically reach into a patient’s body to investigate or treat an illness or injury. The core specialty is general surgery, but there’s a wide spectrum of surgical subspecialties, which we’ll cover shortly.

6. Neurology

Neurologists specialize in the non-surgical management of a variety of central and peripheral nervous system disorders, managing everything from headaches and migraines to devastating and incurable diseases like ALS and Huntington’s disease. Many diseases in neurology are chronic and progressive, but research and new therapies are rapidly evolving.

7. Psychiatry

Psychiatry focuses on understanding and treating mental health disorders and psychological distress through talk therapy and medication. They holistically consider the psychological, socioeconomic, and physiologic causes of their patients’ symptoms, not just the symptoms themselves. Unlike psychologists, psychiatrists attend medical school and, up until residency, they complete the same medical training as all other MDs or DOs.

8. Plastic Surgery

You may have heard me mention this next one before. Plastic surgery focuses primarily on soft tissue, such as skin, muscle, and fat, to reshape or reconstruct a patient’s appearance or function. Aesthetic plastic surgery involves procedures like breast augmentation and liposuction. Reconstructive plastic surgery involves procedures to correct facial and body abnormalities. Plastic surgery is consistently one of the most competitive specialties, in part because it has one of the highest average annual compensations at over $600K. 9. Otolaryngology

Otolaryngology, also known as ENT , is a surgical subspecialty focusing on diseases of the head and neck region. This includes the vocal cords, nose, sinuses, ears, thyroid, and parathyroid, as well as head and neck cancers. ENT is also one of the most competitive specialties you can pursue.

10. Urology

Urologists are surgeons of the urogenital tract, which includes the kidneys, ureters, bladder, prostate, urethra, testes, and more. Urology can also cover sexual function, fertility, urinary continence, and gender identity.

11. Anesthesiology

Anesthesiologists are the patient’s “guardian angel” during surgery, as they care for patients pre-op, intra-op, and post-op. They ensure patients are properly sedated and comfortable throughout the operation, maintaining stable vitals, blood circulation, and an open airway.

12. Radiology

Diagnostic radiology uses machines to visualize what is occurring inside the body. Radiologists interpret these images and leverage the power of machines to both diagnose and treat disease. While most diagnostic radiologists spend their time in reading rooms, interventional radiologists can perform several procedures, such as ablating cancers with radiation-infused particles.

13. Pathology

Similar to radiology, pathology is heavily intertwined with other fields of medicine and is considered a “support specialty.” Pathologists primarily examine specimens to give tissue diagnoses and manage all of the clinical labs ordered by other physicians, from microbiology to hematology to chemistry and everything in between.

14. Emergency Medicine

Emergency medicine physicians treat patients with urgent healthcare needs, from acute conditions like heart attacks to exacerbations of chronic health conditions to stabilizing patients involved in trauma. EM doctors need to know a little bit about everything, making them the jack of all trades, master of one—emergencies.

15. Critical Care

Critical care physicians, also known as intensivists, treat patients with life-threatening injuries and illnesses in the ICU. While similar to emergency medicine, critical care focuses on the long-term, 24-hour care of a dangerously ill patient, as opposed to emergency medicine cases that require immediate evaluation and stabilization.

16. Preventive Medicine

Preventive medicine doctors apply their expertise in medicine, as well as the social, economic, and behavioral sciences, to show how changes to a patient’s lifestyle can be an effective form of treatment and prevent illnesses before they occur. Preventive medicine physicians have one of the lowest annual salaries at around $250K.

17. Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation

Physical medicine and rehabilitation , also known as a PM&R, is the jack-of-all-trades specialty focusing on the management of non-operative orthopedics and neuro-rehabilitation. Physiatrists are the primary physicians for certain nervous system or non-surgical orthopedic disorders, offering both medical and procedural treatments.

18. Orthopedics

Orthopedics, also known as orthopedic surgery, focuses on injuries and diseases of the body’s musculoskeletal system, which includes a person’s bones, joints, ligaments, tendons, muscles, and nerves. Orthopedic surgeons are one of the highest paid specialists, close to plastic surgeons at around $575K a year.

19. Ophthalmology

Ophthalmology deals with ocular and orbital diseases, which is anything relating to the eyes and immediate surrounding structures.

20. Dermatology

Dermatologists manage diseases of the skin, hair, and nails using both medical and procedural aspects. A dermatologist can identify and treat more than 3000 conditions, including eczema, psoriasis, and skin cancer. A dermatologist’s higher salary coupled with the better-than-average work/life balance it provides make it a highly competitive specialty.

21. Cardiology

Cardiology is the most competitive and highest paying of all of the internal medicine fellowships. Cardiologists treat diseases of the heart and vascular system, many of which are quite common, like heart failure, hypertension, and heart attacks. Heart disease is the leading cause of death among Americans.

22. Gastroenterology

Gastroenterology involves everything in the gastrointestinal tract, ranging from the mouth to internal organs like the liver and pancreas to the anus. They deal with a wide variety of diseases, including heartburn, inflammatory bowel disease, and hepatitis.

23. Pulmonology

Pulmonary medicine focuses on the respiratory system and diseases of the airway, lungs, and chest wall, such as asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, and lung cancer. Pulmonologists also manage patients who require mechanical ventilation and life support.

24. Hematology

Hematology and oncology are often lumped together because of how closely related they are. Hematology focuses on diseases of the blood, like anemias and clotting diseases, as well as cancers of the blood, like leukemia.

25. Oncology

Oncology focuses on the diagnosis and treatment of cancers, as well as the acute complications that can arise from cancer and its treatment.

26. Rheumatology

Rheumatology specializes in diseases of the joints, musculoskeletal system, and connective tissue. Rheumatologists see a wide variety of diseases, including autoimmune diseases like rheumatoid arthritis and musculoskeletal diseases like osteoporosis.

27. Endocrinology

Endocrinolog y focuses on diseases of metabolism and the endocrine system, which is made up of the pancreas, thyroid gland, adrenal glands, hormones, and more. They commonly see diseases like diabetes, hyper and hypothyroidism, and obesity, as well as cancers related to the endocrine system.

28. Nephrology

Nephrology focuses solely on the kidneys, which are responsible for many vital and complex functions in the body, such as regulating our electrolytes and fluids. Nephrologists see a wide range of clinical diseases, including renal failure, acid-base disorders, and hypertension.

29. Infectious Diseases

The infectious disease specialty focuses on microorganisms that infect humans, including bacteria, viruses, fungi, and parasites. The COVID-19 pandemic drew attention to the importance of infectious disease specialists.

30. Allergy/Immunology

Allergy and immunology, often referred to as AI, is sometimes lumped together with infectious diseases. An allergist/immunologist cares for patients who have misbehaving immune systems, including people with allergies, respiratory diseases like asthma, immune deficiencies, and certain types of autoimmune conditions.

31. Trauma Surgery

Trauma surgeons primarily deal with patients who have sustained a physical injury, often in an acute setting. The majority of injuries addressed by trauma surgery include those of the neck, chest, abdomen, and extremities.

32. Cardiothoracic Surgery

Cardiothoracic surgeons operate within the chest cavity. This includes surgery on structures such as the heart, aorta, lungs, mediastinum, esophagus, and diaphragm. Cardiothoracic surgeons do procedures like coronary artery bypass grafts to treat plaque buildup in heart vessels.

33. Vascular Surgery

Vascular surgeons manage veins and arteries in every part of the body except the brain and heart. They treat blocked carotid arteries in the neck as well as problems of the aorta after it leaves the heart and enters the abdomen.

34. Gender Surgery

Gender surgery is the controversial field of medicine concerned with alleviating gender dysphoria through surgical procedures. Any surgical procedure designed to help alleviate gender dysphoria can be considered gender surgery, including masculinization and feminization of the face and chest, tracheal shaves, voice modification, and even limb lengthening and shortening procedures.

35. Interventional Cardiology

An interventional cardiologist is a cardiologist who has completed additional training in minimally invasive procedures of the heart. Unlike surgery, these procedures are typically performed in a cardiac cath lab instead of an operating room and involve live x-rays, contrast dye, and specialized equipment.

36. Reproductive Endocrinology

Reproductive endocrinology and infertility , or REI, is focused on helping people get pregnant who are unable to do so on their own. REI physicians are experts in all things related to conception and reproduction and are adept at managing any issues that may be preventing patients from becoming pregnant.

37. Neonatology

Neonatology is a subspecialty of pediatrics that focuses on newborns. They are the ones called in when an infant is born prematurely or with an illness or abnormality that needs immediate treatment, such as infections, breathing disorders, and birth defects.

38. Pediatric Intensivist

Pediatric intensivists focus on the treatment of seriously ill patients from birth to 18 years of age and beyond. They perform intubations for children needing ventilatory support, place arterial catheters for children needing blood pressure monitoring, insert venous catheters for the safe delivery of certain medications, and more.

39. Podiatry

Podiatrists focus on the foot and ankle, as well as related structures of the leg, both in medical and surgical management. They use principles from sports medicine, biomechanics, wound healing, and various surgical techniques to treat anything from discomfort and pain to discoloration or odor.

40. Sports Medicine Doctor

Sports medicine doctors are non-surgical specialists who take care of musculoskeletal injuries for athletes and active patients. They address MSK issues similar to orthopedic surgeons but not requiring surgical intervention. They can provide a full spectrum of care for anyone who wants to be active.

41. Military Doctor

Military physicians must be specialists in their field while being competent and flexible generalists when deployed. For example, while deployed, a general surgeon may be asked to do cases more typically reserved for a neurosurgeon, otolaryngologist, or urologist.

42. Global Health Doctor

Global health doctors help spread medicine and surgery to developing countries and underserved populations. There are five billion people in the world who don’t have access to safe and affordable surgical care. Global health aims to decrease this health gap by partnering with local physicians and advocates to empower those populations.

At revered Black school, Biden leans into faith and tells grads he hears voices of dissent

ATLANTA – President Joe Biden on Sunday warned graduates at one of the country's most revered African American academic institutions of "extremist forces aligned against the meaning and message of Morehouse" College in a commencement address that sought to lay out the stakes of the 2024 election.

"Graduates, this is what we're up against," Biden said during a 27-minute speech that leaned heavily into themes of faith and democracy in an appeal to Black voters. "They peddle a fiction, a character about what being a man is about − tough talk, abusing power, bigotry. Their idea of being a man is toxic."

"But that's not you. It's not us," he said.

Biden's remarks to the 414 graduates at Morehouse , an all-male historically Black college in Atlanta, came as he is struggling to unite Black voters , particularly Black men, around his candidacy. Many Morehouse students and faculty criticized Biden's participation when it was announced because of his support for Israel's war in Gaza.

"In a democracy, we debate dissent about America's role in the world. I want to say this very clearly: I support peaceful, nonviolent protest," Biden said on Sunday in response to the complaints. "Your voices should be heard. I promise you, I hear them."

No major disruptions, but peaceful protests target Biden

Although there were no major disruptions during Biden's speech, a few students walked out when Biden received an honorary Morehouse degree. More than a dozen graduates and at least three faculty members wore keffiyehs, while one student entered the ceremony draped in a Palestinian flag.

As Biden delivered his address, at least one female faculty member stood in the opposite direction, her fist raised, in a sign of protest.

Biden, wearing a maroon gown at the outdoor ceremony, said his administration is "working around the clock for more than just one cease-fire," but also to "bring the region together." He reiterated his support for a two-state solution in which Israelis and Palestinians live in peace.

"This is one of the hardest, most complicated problems in the world. There's nothing easy about it," Biden said. "I know it angers and frustrates many of you, including my family, but most of all, I know it breaks your heart. It breaks mine as well."

Biden added that leadership is about "fighting through the most intractable problems" to "find a solution by doing what you believe is right, even when it's hard and lonely."

About a mile away, pro-Palestinian protesters held a rally organized under the banner of "Say No to Genocide Joe Speaking at Morehouse." Morehouse's valedictorian also raised Israel's war in Gaza during his remarks before Biden took the lectern.

"It is my stance as a Morehouse man – nay as a human being – to call for an immediate and the permanent cease-fire in the Gaza Strip," graduating senior DeAngelo Jeremiah Fletcher said, with Biden sitting just steps behind him. Biden applauded in response.

Biden touts record with Black voters

Polling shows Biden is vastly underperforming his 2020 performance among Black voters, a reliably Democratic constituency, as some drift to Donald Trump, the former president and presumptive Republican nominee.

A New York Times/Siena College poll of six battleground states, including Georgia, found Biden has support from 60% of Black voters and Trump, while Trump is backed by 20% of Black voters. Biden won Black voters in the 2020 election by a 87%-12% margin, according to exit polls.

Ahead of Biden's arrival, Anwar Karim, a sophomore studying film at Morehouse and a member of Atlanta University Center Students for Justice in Palestine, told USA TODAY he was disappointed in his school’s choice of commencement speaker. He also decried Morehouse’s decision to award Biden an honorary degree, which is typically awarded to the school’s commencement speaker after a faculty vote.

“Morehouse College is dedicated to producing men of consequence who lead lives of service and leadership, and I just have to beg the question, when it comes to Biden, what is an example of his leadership?” Karim said Friday.

Biden commits to showing 'democracy is still the way'

In his speech, Biden touted his presidency as one that has delivered to Black Americans, pointing to efforts to invest in Black families and communities, cut child poverty, expand work opportunities, reduce prescription drug prices and cut student loan debt. He called out the "poison of white supremacy" and "systemic racism."

He said he is committed to "show that democracy, democracy, democracy is still the way," even in the face of inequality for Black Americans.

"What is democracy if Black men are being killed in the street? What is democracy if the trail of broken promises still leave Black communities behind?" Biden said. "What is democracy if you have to be ten times better than anyone else to get a fair shot? Most of all, what does it mean, as you've heard before, to be a Black man who loves his country even if it doesn't love him back in equal measure?"

Biden railed against new voting restrictions in Georgia and the "constant attacks on Black election workers." He also said those who stormed the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021 "are called patriots by some," a clear reference to Trump.

“Not in my house," Biden said.

In the days leading up to his Morehouse visit, the White House focused on Black outreach. Biden met on Thursday with plaintiffs of the landmark Brown v. Board of Education Supreme Court decision, on the 70th anniversary of the dismantling of the "separate but equal" precedent. On Friday, Biden met with leaders of the "Divine Nine" HBCU sororities and fraternities.

In Atlanta on Saturday, Biden spoke to Morehouse alumni and others at a campaign event at Mary Mac's Tea Room. "The fact is, this election, lots at stake, lots at stake. It's not about me. It's about the alternative as well," Biden said. "My opponent's not a good loser, but he is a loser."

Introducing Biden, Morehouse President David Thomas said, "No administration in history, since the inception of historically Black colleges and universities, has invested more in our institutions than the Biden administration."

"And if you look at his policies, it is very clear that those investments are not charity," Thomas said.

Biden, 81, closed his remarks with a reference to his age, a liability that has hung over his reelection. When he started his political career, Biden said he was told he was "too young." Now he hears he's "too old."

"Whether you're young or old, I know what endures: The strength and wisdom of faith endures. And my challenge to you is to still keep the faith as long as you can," Biden said. "Together we're capable of building a democracy worthy of our dreams."
