University of bristol: social work, doctor of philosophy - phd, full-time, 4 years starts sep 2024.

A PhD in Social Work equips students with the skills and experience to apply social research methods and tools to critically examine some of the most pressing contemporary issues in social work practice, policy and education. Students are encouraged to develop a topic of interest that directly relates to their own practice experiences or is of wider interest and relevance to the delivery of social work services and support to disadvantaged individuals and groups, either in the UK or overseas.

Students will be supported to develop research questions and design a study that enables them to rigorously research their topic of interest and make an original contribution to the knowledge base of social work. Topics may directly explore practice issues or contribute more broadly to social work knowledge, working with specific groups and communities and addressing systems of inequality and social disadvantage. Where appropriate, students are encouraged to work in collaboration with relevant organisations and user and interest groups to ensure their research outputs and key findings can directly inform social work practice and service delivery.

We are a multidisciplinary, research-intensive school which brings together theory, policy and practice. Our research engages with and influences national and international policy. Our policy experts come from a wide variety of backgrounds in social policy research, social work, sociology, gender violence, childhood studies, disability studies, health and social care, history, human geography, economics, psychology, physical activity, nutrition and health sciences, urban studies, and poverty, based within seven specialist research centres.

Supervisors in social work bring diverse interests across child and family social work (for example, looked after children; adoption and fostering; supporting parents with substance misuse or learning disabilities; domestic violence responses and interventions) and adult social care (for example, disabled adults' social care needs; housing and homelessness; mental health social work; social work with older people and carers; inclusive service provision for LGBTQ+ individuals).

The school is an exciting environment for postgraduate studies; we welcome students from the UK and abroad to join our diverse and highly-rated research team. We particularly welcome applications on topics with direct relevance to national and international social work and policy concerns.

We welcome new PhD students all year round. However, the largest intake is in September each year with a second intake in January. We strongly recommend applicants consider a September or January start.

Part-Time, 8 years starts Sep 2024

Full-time, 2 years starts sep 2024.

This two-year professional programme is designed for people who want to qualify and practise as a professional social worker. The programme leads to a nationally and internationally recognised professional social work qualification and graduates are eligible to register as a qualified social worker with Social Work England.

Qualifying for a postgraduate degree at Bristol means that you will be able to work with both children and adults, helping them to be safe, cope with difficulties and take control of their lives again. You will support people to identify their strengths and build their self-confidence, help them to overcome problems in times of crisis, and link with other services.

The teaching staff at Bristol include experienced practitioners who have worked in a variety of social work settings including child and adult safeguarding, domestic violence and abuse, school social work, foster care, physical and learning difficulties, mental health, youth offending, and hospital social work. At our research-intensive university, the programme's teaching team is also active in research, holding a wide range of funded social work research projects nationally and internationally.

Working as a social worker requires an ability to appraise complex and difficult situations, drawing on social science research, social work theories and methods of intervention. To be considered for enrolment on this programme you will need to demonstrate an understanding of social work (this could be within the United Kingdom or internationally). Upon completion of the programme you will have a thorough understanding of social policies and a firm grasp of the legal powers and duties that underpin practice in England.

The MSc in Social Work combines university-based learning with two extended periods of supervised practice as a student social worker. Your practice placements will consist of at least 170 days of learning across two contrasting practice settings, together with 30 days of skills training. By completing this degree, you will be eligible to register with a social work regulatory body (such as Social Work England) and practise as a qualified professional social worker in a range of settings (including statutory, voluntary, private and independent sectors), and in a number of countries (contingent upon country-specific requirements).

You will develop an understanding of the structural and personal factors that lead to disadvantage, oppression and discrimination, and learn how to apply this understanding to your practice. You will develop values and skills as a reflective practitioner, appraising relevant evidence - including research - to evaluate your own and other people's work and to contribute to the development of policy and practice.

More general information about the role and duties of social workers in the United Kingdom can be accessed through the British Association of Social Workers (BASW). BASW is the UK's professional membership organisation for social workers.

Research topic: Menstruation Messages and Young People

My research involves understanding the messages young people receive about menstruation from different sources, including: advertisements, Relationships and Sex Education (RSE) and families. The project will explore how young people position themselves, and menstruation, in relation to dominant menstruation discourses.

Findings from this research will provide insights into stigmatising menstruation discourses and how young people respond to them. I hope findings will help education policy-makers and practitioners to structure and deliver menstruation education in RSE.

Course type

Creative community engagement with Sparks Bristol!

City challenges went off-campus with a trip to sparks bristol on wednesday 8 may.   .

SPARKS Bristol logo

The event started with a tour of the different departments at Sparks and a talk about what Sparks does, why it was founded, and what they stand for.

Lucy, Volunteer Coordinator

Lucy, Volunteer Coordinator, said

“Sparks Bristol is a sustainability and creativity hub. It’s a community space in the centre of Bristol where we want people to explore what a fairer and greener future looks like. And they consider the climate crisis, the cost of living crisis, and what we can do with an empty, massive building right in the middle of the city.”

Students then worked in teams on research, idea generation, and putting together presentations. Developing their skills in innovation, teamwork, leadership, and public speaking.

Ehikioya presenting at the City Challenge

“What I particularly enjoyed about this event was being able to work within a group to formulate ideas for the problems Sparks is facing.” – International Law student, Ehikioya . (Pictured left)

“It’s a great experience. I would totally recommend to everyone, each and every student of the University.” – Management student, Rohit .

City Challenges are a chance for students to engage with local organisations, social enterprises, and charities. Developing essential workplace-ready skills while helping to solve real business challenges and giving back to the community.

They are also a fantastic opportunity for small organisations to meet our students and tap into their innovative ways of thinking:

Lucy said “I have enjoyed meeting lots of different students. I feel really energised by the ideas and the creativity that they brought to the challenge that they gave us, and it helped me come up with some new ideas myself. And yeah, I’m excited to get back to work and see if we can implement some of those ideas.”

A student stands next to a projector screen talking animatedly about the slide they are presenting. The slide shows how Sparks Bristol could link their events programme to the UN sustainable development goals.

Systems Science for Health Equity PhD Concentration

Brown School PhD students typically develop an individualized research area through coursework and mentored training opportunities. The Systems Science for Health Equity (SS4HE) doctoral concentration provides an opportunity for students interested in the transdisciplinary field to complete relevant coursework and mentored research. The concentration aims to prepare next-generation public health and social work scholars in complex systems thinking and methods through the following SS4HE competencies:

  • Understand how organizational, community, and healthcare systems contribute to public health as complex systems.
  • Apply core systems science principles, such as complexity, feedback, emergence dynamics, evolution, endogeneity, social structures, and interactivity to public health research and intervention design.
  • Describe how systems thinking and systems science methods contribute to core research activities of description, prediction, explanation, and causal inference.
  • Design studies incorporating systems science tools, such as agent-based modeling, systems dynamics modeling, network analysis, group model building, etc.
  • Engage diverse partners in systems science research to ensure equitable public health processes and outcomes.

PhD students concentrate in SS4HE by completing SS4HE-related coursework, getting involved in the various SS4HE research training opportunities at Washington University, and conducting mentored dissertation research that contributes to the field.

Concentration Requirements

Coursework : Students complete concentration coursework with other PhD requirements in their first two years of the program. Concentrators complete one introductory course in systems science and select at least two additional SS4HE doctoral courses from the options presented below. Students who have already completed introductory courses prior to joining the doctoral programs may take another of the SS4HE courses.

*Students can petition to complete course requirements through independent studies focused on additional areas in systems science.

SS4HE Training Opportunities: Concentrators are encouraged to participate in the various systems science training opportunities offered across the university, such as the quarterly meetings of the Systems Science Interest Group (SSIG), the annual Systems Sciences for Social Impact (SSSI) Summer Training Institute, and mentored research opportunities through the various funded transdisciplinary research centers using complex systems approaches, such as the Center for Public Health Systems Science, Center on Social Dynamics and Policy, Social System Design Lab, Center for Mental Health Services Research, Center for Advancing Health Services, Policy, and Economic Research, etc.

Mentored Systems Science Dissertation Research: Concentrators identify faculty mentors whose scholarship involved systems science. Typically, these faculty will supervise the completion of an Area Statement & Qualifying Exam. After finishing SS4HE and other required doctoral coursework and milestones, students conduct dissertation research in systems science under the mentorship of faculty working in the area.

Process: Students interested in the concentration work with their faculty advisor, the SS4HE Lead Faculty, and their Program Director to ensure interest alignment. The student and faculty develop and execute research that culminates in a dissertation that contributes to the systems science literature. The successful defense of the SS4HE dissertation is recorded in the student’s final academic transcript.

A team of faculty across Schools coordinates to support SS4HE concentrators. Dr. Douglas Luke, Irving Louis Horowitz Professor in Social Policy, member of the Institute for Public Health, Director of Evaluation for the Institute of Clinical and Translational Science, and founding member of the Washington University Network of Dissemination and Implementation Science Researchers serves as the Concentration Lead.
