Master Thesis - Mycelium-Based Composite Material

Mycomatrix Formen

Mycelium-based materials has remarkable properties that can be utilized to create sustainable and energy-efficient building materials. The combination of fungal hyphae with lignocellulosic substrate, which serves as fungal nutrition, forms a composite-like material. During this process, mycelium acts as a stabilizing matrix for the substrate. Fungal mycelium has gained considerable attention in the scientific community due to its rapid and virtually boundless growth capabilities, as well as its excellent insulating properties. Nevertheless, its relatively low to moderate strength currently limits its applications in the built environment.

Topic 1 : Numerical Simulation for the Fracture Behavior of Mycelium-Based Composite Material

Various tests, including compression, bending, and shear, were performed on the mycelium-based composite material until failure occurred. These tests revealed diverse patterns of fracture in the specimens. The primary goal of this master's thesis is to formulate a numerical material model capable of comprehensively characterizing the fracture modes exhibited by the mycelium composite. This model will be informed by the observations and outcomes derived from the conducted tests.

Requirements

  • Understanding material modeling and material fractures.
  • Experience with Abaqus or similar Finite Element Analysis (FEA) software.

Topic 2 : Investigating Anisotropic Behavior of Mycelium-Based Composite Material.

It’s believed that mycelium composites made from wood chips exhibit anisotropic behavior due to multiple influencing factors. Meaning that it has different physical properties when measured along different directions. The motivation of this master’s thesis is to investigate the anisotropicity of mycelium-based composite and to develop a material model that can describe it. The bending, compression, and shear tests results of the material are already available and can be utilized for further investigation and modeling purposes. Furthermore, additional experiments may be conducted to gather more information.

  • Understanding material modeling and anisotropic behavior.

Below you find information about all types of scientific papers that are written in the different courses of study at the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering. These papers include project research papers, bachelor's theses, and master's theses. All information can also be found in the respective examination regulations for the bachelor ’s programs and the master ‘s programs. The examination regulations are only available in German.

General informations

Where can the thesis be written.

Typically, research papers and projects are completed at a research institute of the faculties offering the course of study. In addition, it is possible to complete a paper or project at an external institution.

External institutions include all institutions, institutes, universities, and industry companies that are not part of the faculties offering the course of study. Generally all external work must be approved by the Examination Board and issued and supervised by a chair of Faculty 4. Course-specific exceptions are listed below.

Who supervises the work?

The supervising professor (betreuende:r Professor:in) is typically a professor or private lecturer of the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering or of the School of Business and Economics (only Business Administration and Engineering students) at RWTH Aachen University. An external supervisor (externe_r Betreuer_in) is a supervisor at the site of the external project or paper (e.g., heads of department, a professor at another faculty). External supervisors can only act as second examiners if they are professors or private lecturers at a German academic university and are appointed as such by the relevant examination board. In all other cases, the faculty-internal supervisor and a second examiner issue the grade.

For students of Business Administration and Engineering, interdisciplinary scientific theses whose topics include both engineering and economics can be jointly supervised by a professor from the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering and a professor from the School of Business and Economics. Both professors determine the first and second supervisor of the thesis and participate jointly in the final colloquium. The first supervisor determines the formal requirements for the scientific work in consultation with the second supervisor.

How do I register my thesis?

You will find the corresponding registration forms (Erfassungsbogen) in our download section below. These must always be completed in full and signed in the order indicated (large numbers in the signature fields). Business Administration and Engineering students whose topic for the thesis is purely economic and is issued by a professor of Faculty 8 do not need the approval of the specialization supervisor. The registration deadline is generally the date on which the registration form is signed by the professor supervising the student.

What do I have to consider if I want to write my thesis externally?

If you want to write your thesis externally, approval must be obtained from the Examination Board. Registration forms (Erfassungsbogen) of external theses can be submitted by email , sent to the faculty by mail or dropped into the "red mailbox" (Eilfschornsteinstraße 18, 52062 Aachen, first floor). Documents should not be additionally submitted as originals if they have already been sent to the Examination Board by email. Digitally submitted registration forms must be signed or digitally signed.

After processing by the Examination Board, the registration form will be returned to you by email. A copy of the document will also be sent directly to the ZPA so that your thesis can be registered in the campus management system and the deadline can be announced.

Where can I find postings for papers and theses?

A list of announced scientific papers of the chairs and institutes of Faculty 4 can be found here .

If you have any further questions, please contact the Study Counseling Service by email or in person during office hours .

This quick guide describes how to publish the full text of bachelor theses in RWTH Publications.

Preliminary note

Bachelor's and Master's theses are not subject to mandatory publication. However, they can be referenced in RWTH Publications both with the metadata and published in full text according to the open access model.

Important :

Prerequisite for the publication of a thesis on RWTH Publications is the approval of the institute management. Any contractual conditions regarding non-disclosure agreements, e.g. with industrial partners, which legally exclude provision in RWTH Publications must also be observed.

The advantages of online publication are:

  • The full text is visible and searchable worldwide. A stable and permanent addressing is guaranteed by a DOI assignment. Thus, the publication can be reliably cited.
  • The publication channels are fast.
  • The publication of your bachelor's thesis via the document server RWTH Publications is handled by the university library, whereby only the simple right of use is transferred to the University Library.
  • Studies show that Open Access publications are read more often. They can therefore also be cited more often.

Requirements to the PDF file

  • The first page must contain the note "communicated by [name of the institute director]".
  • The file must have a table of contents in the form of bookmarks for navigation (For more information, see Creating PDFs with Microsoft Word and for Creating PDFs with LaTeX).
  • All fonts used must be embedded. For more information, see Create PDFs with Microsoft Word and for Creating PDFs with LaTeX .)

Instruction

  • Fill out the online form in RWTH Publications.
  • Upload your work in PDF format.
  • The Author's Agreement will be displayed at the end of the form. With the Author's Agreement, you transfer to the library the simple right of use to distribute your work on the Internet. Note: We accept Author's Agreement in written form (printed and signed in original) or in electronic form. Author's Agreement in electronic form must be signed either with a qualified electronic signature or with an advanced electronic signature created with a certificate from DFN-PKI (see Instructions ). Please note that for legal reasons we are not allowed to accept Author's Agreement with only a simple electronic signature or a scanned signature. Please send the completed and signed Author's Agreement to the Department Abteilung Services zum wissenschaftlichen Publizieren. RWTH-Publikationen Services zum wissenschaftlichen Publizieren Templergraben 61 52062 Aachen [email protected]
  • Send us an e-mail with the consent of your institute director or a person appointed by him/her to publish the paper.
