Lisa Vanderpump and Gordon Ramsay arrive on the red carpet at the FOX UPFRONT ’24 on Monday, May 13, 2024.

Michael Strahan, employee of The Walt Disney Company, logged more minutes than anyone during the Fox upfront on Monday afternoon. But the Fox NFL Sunday analyst wasn’t exactly the headliner. That honor went to his incoming colleague, Tom Brady.

Related Stories

Inside the racy disney upfront: bob iger and amorous golden retrievers take center stage, jimmy kimmel unleashed at disney upfronts: "we're building one big ad-supported pile of sh**".

The host platform of the coming Super Bowl is always particularly giddy to remind the media-buying community of that fact during upfronts . That Fox should get the seven-time Super Bowl champion himself to join its roster during the run-up to the Super Bowl, well, naturally sports were a focal point. But there was also time spent on Tubi’s growth, the dry wit of Jon Hamm (producer and voice of Fox cartoon Grimsburg ) and the less-opinionated side of Fox News.

While guests of the Manhattan Center presentation were greeted by a small but enthusiastic group of protesters — their shouts to media buyers included “Fox lies, people die, don’t be the next MyPillow guy,” a joke about Fox News advertiser and 2020 election denier Mike Lindell — the Fox News portion of the presentation steered as far away from the network’s more controversial personalities as possible. Instead, they brought out correspondent Benjamin Hall, who was critically wounded while reporting in Ukraine in 2022. The journalist, who lost one leg, the foot on his other leg, the use of one of his hands and one eye, was welcomed with a standing ovation when he came on to plug the channel’s reporting from Israel and Gaza. You aren’t likely to see any more standing Os this week, a fact that irked Jamie Foxx a bit when he joined the stage a few minutes later.

What differentiated Fox from the morning’s NBCUniversal presentation and, likely, the half-dozen others that will follow over the coming days is that it still selling the closest thing to traditional TV. There’s no need to posture about the streaming wars, because Tubi, the Fox-owned AVOD platform, is free. Subscriptions were of no concern in that room, and lack of airtime devoted to that subject was a welcome break from the streaming platforms’ sometimes-desperate hijacking of the upfronts.

But Tubi, as CEO Anjali Sud was quick to point out, has seen viewership grow 60 percent since the last upfront. For that reason, her original entertainment programming got as much time as the broadcast channel. Lauren Graham, who stars in upcoming original comedy Z Suite , took the stage with her Gen Z co-stars and got one of the bigger laughs when, after translating young-speak for the room, asked why they thought Tubi was “rizzing up viewers.” There is, of course, no data that could attempt an answer for that.

Of the two scripted trailers, medical drama Doc seemed to play best in the room. It’s about a doctor played by Molly Parker who wakes up from an accident having forgotten the last eight years of her life and thinks its 2016. (Oh honey, buckle up!) The network, however, might be a little higher on Rescue HI-Surf — a definitely-not- Baywatch lifeguard drama that gets the coveted, if increasingly less-helpful post-Super Bowl slot come February.

At revered Black school, Biden leans into faith and tells grads he hears voices of dissent

ATLANTA – President Joe Biden on Sunday warned graduates at one of the country's most revered African American academic institutions of "extremist forces aligned against the meaning and message of Morehouse" College in a commencement address that sought to lay out the stakes of the 2024 election.

"Graduates, this is what we're up against," Biden said during a 27-minute speech that leaned heavily into themes of faith and democracy in an appeal to Black voters. "They peddle a fiction, a character about what being a man is about − tough talk, abusing power, bigotry. Their idea of being a man is toxic."

"But that's not you. It's not us," he said.

Biden's remarks to the 414 graduates at Morehouse , an all-male historically Black college in Atlanta, came as he is struggling to unite Black voters , particularly Black men, around his candidacy. Many Morehouse students and faculty criticized Biden's participation when it was announced because of his support for Israel's war in Gaza.

"In a democracy, we debate dissent about America's role in the world. I want to say this very clearly: I support peaceful, nonviolent protest," Biden said on Sunday in response to the complaints. "Your voices should be heard. I promise you, I hear them."

Prep for the polls: See who is running for president and compare where they stand on key issues in our Voter Guide

No major disruptions, but peaceful protests target Biden

Although there were no major disruptions during Biden's speech, a few students walked out when Biden received an honorary Morehouse degree. More than a dozen graduates and at least three faculty members wore keffiyehs, while one student entered the ceremony draped in a Palestinian flag.

As Biden delivered his address, at least one female faculty member stood in the opposite direction, her fist raised, in a sign of protest.

Biden, wearing a maroon gown at the outdoor ceremony, said his administration is "working around the clock for more than just one cease-fire," but also to "bring the region together." He reiterated his support for a two-state solution in which Israelis and Palestinians live in peace.

"This is one of the hardest, most complicated problems in the world. There's nothing easy about it," Biden said. "I know it angers and frustrates many of you, including my family, but most of all, I know it breaks your heart. It breaks mine as well."

Biden added that leadership is about "fighting through the most intractable problems" to "find a solution by doing what you believe is right, even when it's hard and lonely."

About a mile away, pro-Palestinian protesters held a rally organized under the banner of "Say No to Genocide Joe Speaking at Morehouse." Morehouse's valedictorian also raised Israel's war in Gaza during his remarks before Biden took the lectern.

"It is my stance as a Morehouse man – nay as a human being – to call for an immediate and the permanent cease-fire in the Gaza Strip," graduating senior DeAngelo Jeremiah Fletcher said, with Biden sitting just steps behind him. Biden applauded in response.

Biden touts record with Black voters

Polling shows Biden is vastly underperforming his 2020 performance among Black voters, a reliably Democratic constituency, as some drift to Donald Trump, the former president and presumptive Republican nominee.

A New York Times/Siena College poll of six battleground states, including Georgia, found Biden has support from 60% of Black voters and Trump, while Trump is backed by 20% of Black voters. Biden won Black voters in the 2020 election by a 87%-12% margin, according to exit polls.

Ahead of Biden's arrival, Anwar Karim, a sophomore studying film at Morehouse and a member of Atlanta University Center Students for Justice in Palestine, told USA TODAY he was disappointed in his school’s choice of commencement speaker. He also decried Morehouse’s decision to award Biden an honorary degree, which is typically awarded to the school’s commencement speaker after a faculty vote.

“Morehouse College is dedicated to producing men of consequence who lead lives of service and leadership, and I just have to beg the question, when it comes to Biden, what is an example of his leadership?” Karim said Friday.

Biden commits to showing 'democracy is still the way'

In his speech, Biden touted his presidency as one that has delivered to Black Americans, pointing to efforts to invest in Black families and communities, cut child poverty, expand work opportunities, reduce prescription drug prices and cut student loan debt. He called out the "poison of white supremacy" and "systemic racism."

He said he is committed to "show that democracy, democracy, democracy is still the way," even in the face of inequality for Black Americans.

"What is democracy if Black men are being killed in the street? What is democracy if the trail of broken promises still leave Black communities behind?" Biden said. "What is democracy if you have to be ten times better than anyone else to get a fair shot? Most of all, what does it mean, as you've heard before, to be a Black man who loves his country even if it doesn't love him back in equal measure?"

Biden railed against new voting restrictions in Georgia and the "constant attacks on Black election workers." He also said those who stormed the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021 "are called patriots by some," a clear reference to Trump.

“Not in my house," Biden said.

In the days leading up to his Morehouse visit, the White House focused on Black outreach. Biden met on Thursday with plaintiffs of the landmark Brown v. Board of Education Supreme Court decision, on the 70th anniversary of the dismantling of the "separate but equal" precedent. On Friday, Biden met with leaders of the "Divine Nine" HBCU sororities and fraternities.

More: In a nod to history, Biden meets with Brown v. Board of Education families

In Atlanta on Saturday, Biden spoke to Morehouse alumni and others at a campaign event at Mary Mac's Tea Room. "The fact is, this election, lots at stake, lots at stake. It's not about me. It's about the alternative as well," Biden said. "My opponent's not a good loser, but he is a loser."

Introducing Biden, Morehouse President David Thomas said, "No administration in history, since the inception of historically Black colleges and universities, has invested more in our institutions than the Biden administration."

"And if you look at his policies, it is very clear that those investments are not charity," Thomas said.

Biden, 81, closed his remarks with a reference to his age, a liability that has hung over his reelection. When he started his political career, Biden said he was told he was "too young." Now he hears he's "too old."

"Whether you're young or old, I know what endures: The strength and wisdom of faith endures. And my challenge to you is to still keep the faith as long as you can," Biden said. "Together we're capable of building a democracy worthy of our dreams."

Apple News+ introduced Quartiles, a new original spelling game, and a new Offline Mode that automatically provides recent and personalized News content for subscribers when they’re not connected to Wi-Fi or a cellular network. Both features are available with iOS 17.5 or later for News+ subscribers. 1

“We’re always working to improve the experience for our News+ subscribers,” said Lauren Kern, editor-in-chief of Apple News. “Our new daily word game Quartiles is a fun addition to our popular crossword offerings. And Offline Mode makes it easy to access the hundreds of magazines, newspapers, narrated articles, and more included in a News+ subscription — no matter where you are.”

Quartiles challenges players to form words by selecting tiles containing two to four letters, and users collect points based on word length. New puzzles are available each day, and players can also choose to share a Quartiles puzzle with other News+ subscribers.

Quartiles is the latest addition to the Puzzles collection available to News+ subscribers. With iOS 17, Apple introduced a daily crossword and mini crossword puzzle for News+ subscribers in the U.S. and Canada. News+ subscribers can also access a new Puzzles Scoreboard to see personalized stats and streaks for each puzzle, including their solve rate and their longest streak.

Apple News+ subscribers can now enjoy Offline Mode on iPhone and iPad to automatically download Top Stories, Apple News Today audio briefings, full magazine issues and narrated articles from News+ publishers, and puzzles to access later, without Wi-Fi or a cellular connection. When the device is back online, downloaded content will automatically refresh, and downloads will be optimized to maximize space on the device.

  • Quartiles is available to News+ subscribers in the U.S. and Canada.

Writer Carvell Wallace on past pain and forgiveness: Letting go is 'always available'

Headshot of Tonya Mosley.

Tonya Mosley

Another Word for Love, by Carvell Wallace

Award-winning writer Carvell Wallace was 12 when he had a realization: He couldn't rely on anyone else; the only person that would always be with him in the world was himself.

Wallace, who grew up unhoused for a year, sometimes sleeping in a car with his mother, calls the realization "a wounded response ... a way of ensuring myself against the actual feelings."

In his new memoir, Another Word for Love , Wallace writes about his early life with, and without, his mother in western Pennsylvania, Washington, D.C. and Los Angeles. He also chronicles his addictions, becoming a parent and a writer, and coming into his own as a queer Black man.

Wallace didn't start writing until he was 40 years old, beginning with an impassioned Facebook post in response to the death of Black teenager Michael Brown , who was shot and killed by police in Ferguson, Mo., in 2014. He's since written profiles of musicians, athletes and politicians for publications like The New York Times Magazine, Rolling Stone and The New Yorker. He's also the co-author, along with basketball star Andre Iguodala, of The Sixth Man, which chronicles Iguodala's NBA career.

Wallace says he's careful to avoid what he calls "trauma porn" when writing about his own experiences with poverty, racism and homophobia: "There's a weird kind of ghoulish fascination with watching people suffer under oppression for art and for people writing about their oppression and reliving it over and over again."

For his own memoir, Wallace says his focus is on the root of his pain and his recovery from it, rather than the nature of the pain. "This is about what it means to become whole again. This is about living and hope and fullness and the regaining of self. This is about courage," he says.

Interview highlights

On processing his trauma about his mom through writing

I think it was cathartic and healing, ... even though that's cliché, because it helped relieve me of some lingering resentment that I may have still been carrying towards her. Because I believe that, like any resentment that we have, I mean, even if they're justified, they're more harmful to us than they are to anyone else. ... [When] my mother was alive, I had a very complicated relationship with her. On the one hand, I loved her, and it was great. On the other hand, I was mad at her for leaving. I was mad at her for not being there. I was mad at her for the way that the things that happened in my life, as a result of the way that she, in my opinion, chose to live.

On forgiving his mom before she died

Towards the end of her life, I had a real moment of clarity, like two days before she died, where suddenly it dawned on me, oh, wait a second, there's no benefit to me being mad at this person. ... And after that point, I was like, oh, you can actually let go of anything at any time, can't you? That's actually possible. It might not be easy, but it's available to you.

A Black Mother Reflects On Giving Her 3 Sons 'The Talk' ... Again And Again

And so it has become really important for my health, but also out of respect for my mother and my ancestry, that I let go of whatever troubles I have with this person — or had — and focus on what their power and beauty and glory was. And I actually believe that there's a real personal and political benefit to that, because it allows me to be empowered. It allows me to connect to her sources of power. It allows me to show up more fully. ... So I have no doubt that she joined me in the writing of this book. I have no doubt that this was what she wanted for me on some level. And to whatever extent she's able to reach me from wherever she is.

Carvell Wallace's new memoir is Another Word for Love.

Adults have tremendous emotional and spiritual power in the lives of children, and I'm always surprised by how deep that goes. And so [my aunt] saying, in 1987, "You're terrible, you're a freak, you disgust me," is incredibly powerful. And this person saying in 2011, or whatever year that was, "I hope you've been able to recover from that," is also powerful. I think I got off the phone [with my aunt], I was like, yeah, I'm going to magically be free. ... And what I learned is that it was a good beginning, but all of the scarring and damage around it was all there. So it didn't magically snap a finger and disentangle everything. It was like, now I have permission to start disentangling.

On what it means to make his life an apology

The ways in which we harm one another can never be undone. You cannot un-harm a person. And that is a heavy realization to have, and yet, to me, absolutely necessary. Because if you truly want to make amends and make right, you have to fully embrace the fact that I can't un-harm a person. ...

The real apology is changing the behavior. So if you just say, "I'm sorry," and, "That was terrible," and then you just keep doing the same thing, that's not enough. And so for me to live as an amends is to wake up every day with the consciousness that I am responsible for my behavior. ... And it's necessary for me to deal with my behavior and my problems and my triggers and my shortcomings and whatever, because of the way those things have harmed other people, that it's actually necessary for me to deal with them. It's not optional. It's not, "Oh, today I'm going to try and be good." It's actually I've already done enough harm to people that I owe this to the world.

On writing about what his mom's life could have been if she had an abortion

It felt so good because again, I am also living in amends to my mom. And what that means is I am trying to love her in her fullness now, in ways that maybe I wasn't able to do when she was alive. And so there is a feeling of joy that I get from being able to examine her full self. And so that part felt good. Obviously, there's also grief. There's tremendous grief, and none of it is like, "I shouldn't have been born. I ruined my mother's life." I have no inkling of that. That's not even remotely how it works in my mind. It's more like grief for what she couldn't have. And I think the fact that she has passed helps a lot because in my belief, I think she gets more opportunities. Her spirit and soul will get more opportunities to embody themselves in new ways. And so this go-round that she had may not have been everything she wanted it to be, but she's been freed from this, from these constraints — and I love that for her.

6 microsoft word power user tricks everyone should know.

Unleash lesser-known Microsoft Word features now!

Quick Links

Add frequently used commands to the quick access toolbar, add your desired shortcut in the autocorrect list, translate text right within microsoft word, use the spike tool to cut and paste multiple blocks, compare two versions of a document, convert text to table and vice versa, key takeaways.

  • Add frequently used commands to the Quick Access Toolbar. Go to File > Options > Quick Access Toolbar. Choose the command, click "Add >>," then "OK."
  • Add shortcut entries for long words or lines to the AutoCorrect list. Word will replace the shortcut with the full text as you type.
  • To move lots of text around, try Word's Spike tool. Cut or copy multiple blocks of text, then paste them wherever you need.

No matter how long you've been using Microsoft Word, there might still be some features you haven't explored yet. Here's a look at a few lesser-known features in Microsoft Word that can improve your efficiency and help you save time.

The Quick Access Toolbar, found at the top-left of your screen and featuring commands like Save, Undo, and Redo, allows you to perform common tasks quickly. You can add more commands to this toolbar to make your workflow even more efficient. For example, if you frequently insert images into documents, you can add an "Insert Picture" command.

To add a command to the Quick Access Toolbar, open the "File" menu in the top-left corner and select "Options." Go to the "Quick Access Toolbar" section, choose the command you want to add from the list on the left, click the "Add >>" button, and then confirm by clicking "OK." This will add your chosen command to the toolbar.

The auto-correct feature automatically corrects any spelling mistake you make in Microsoft Word. But did you know you can also add a custom correction for a shortcut in the AutoCorrect list ? For example, if you frequently type a lengthy business name, you can add an entry for it. Then, whenever you type that shortcut, AutoCorrect will replace it with the assigned text.

To add a custom shortcut to the autocorrect list, go to the "File" menu at the top-left and select "Options." Then, navigate to the "Proofing" tab on the left and click the "AutoCorrect Options" button on the right.

Then, type your desired shortcut in the "Replace" box and enter the full word or line in the "With" box. Finally, click "OK" to save your changes.

Now, whenever you type the shortcut you've assigned, Microsoft Word will automatically replace it with the longer word you've added.

Microsoft Word comes with a convenient translator tool. It enables you to translate a document from a foreign language to your native language or convert it to the language of the person you're sharing the document with. You can also translate specific sections within a Word document and replace the text with the translated version with a single click.

To use the translator tool, open your document in Microsoft Word, navigate to the "Review" tab, and click Translate > Translate Selection. Choose the languages you want to translate from and to, and Word will handle the rest automatically. If you want to replace the original text with the translated version, click "Insert."

To translate an entire document, head to the "Document" tab, select the current language of the document, choose the language you want to translate it to, and then click "Translate."

Spike, an extended clipboard feature, enables you to cut or copy multiple blocks of text or content from a document and paste them elsewhere, whether within the same document or into another Word document. This feature is particularly handy for extracting specific information from a Word document, as it allows you to cut or copy chunks and paste them in one go.

To relocate content using the Spike tool, select the first part of the text you want to cut or copy, and then press CTRL+F3 (or CMD+F3 on Mac). Repeat this process for each additional part of the text you want to cut or copy. Once you've copied (or cut) all the desired content, navigate to where you want to paste it and press CTRL+Shift+F3 (or CMD+Shift+F3 on Mac).

Microsoft Word offers a convenient Compare tool, which allows you to compare two versions of a document and review the changes made in the revised version compared to the original. It highlights changes by assigning different colors to different authors, and if authors have added their names, you can easily identify who made which change.

To use this feature, navigate to the "Review" tab, click on the "Compare" dropdown, and select "Compare…."

Then, click on the browse icon to choose the original and revised documents, and click "OK."

Word will display the changes made by authors in the left sidebar, the alterations in the middle pane, and the original document without any changes on the right-hand side. You can easily see both the original and revised versions of the document, along with all the changes made by different authors, in one view.

Microsoft Word simplifies the process of converting text into tables and vice versa. If you have content that you want presented in a tabular format but prefer not to input each item manually into individual fields, the text-to-table feature allows you to convert the data into a table with a single click.

Likewise, if you have data organized in a table and wish to convert it into text without manually copying and pasting each entry, the table-to-text conversion feature is at your service.

To transform text into a table, highlight the text you wish to convert and then head to the "Insert" tab.

From there, click on the "Table" drop-down menu and select "Convert Text to Table."

To convert text to a table, each entry needs to be separated by a comma; if not, the conversion won't work properly.

To convert a table into text, go to any cell within the table, go to the "Layout" tab, locate the "Convert to Text" option, and click on it. Finally, confirm your choice by clicking "OK."

These are a few Microsoft Word features that can improve your productivity and simplify complex tasks. If you haven't experimented with these features yet, it's worth giving them a try. If you're already familiar with most of them, explore other Microsoft Word tips and tricks to streamline your workflow further and save time in the office.
