Nowadays most green energy is becoming evermore prevalent in both developed and developing countries. Some argue they greatly reduce costs and are better for the environment, others believe they are a serious threat to energy security. Discuss both views and give your opinion.

The world today uses more renewable energy than ever before since it contributes to the preservation of the environment and is economically sound; however, some argue that green energy could undermine the reliability of the global supply as a result of its dependency on climatic and meteorological phenomena. This essay will examine both views, but personally, I strongly advocate the adoption of renewable sources of energy.

On the one hand, opponents of renewables claim that the world could face disruptions to the power supply should they be fully adopted. This is largely due to the fact that many green energy technologies currently in use depend on changeable and unpredictable phenomena such as wind, rain and cloud cover.

To take the fastest growing sector as an example, solar panels can only be used in the presence of strong and direct sunlight, and although the problem of directness has already been somewhat solved with moving panel arrays, a cloudy few days could still result in a blackout if we depended entirely on solar power; something that is unlikely to occur today given current oil stockpiles.

However, fossil fuels are a larger threat to energy security since they are certainly finite in quantity, whereas renewable energy is effectively infinite; once the Earth’s oil is depleted, there will be no energy security without green energy technologies.

Furthermore, problems of unpredictability can be mitigated by improving battery technologies (to create a larger buffer), building more renewable energy generators (to increase supply during ideal conditions) and improving current technologies (to increase efficiency), such as in the moving solar panel example. Proponents of renewables therefore claim that they are the most economically sound option.

To conclude, while many may believe that green energy technologies are a threat to energy security, the fossil fuels they frequently promote are a greater threat, and renewables are in fact the only sound option, both economically and environmentally.

An insight into the progress in renewable energy research

A. The race is on for the ultimate goal of renewable energy: electricity production at prices that are competitive with coal-fired power stations, but without coal’s pollution. Some new technologies are aiming to be the first to push coal from its position as Australia’s chief source of electricity.

B. At the moment the front-runner in renewable energy is wind technology. According to Peter Bergin of Australian Hydro, one of Australia’s leading wind energy companies, there have been no dramatic changes in windmill design for many years, but the cumulative effects of numerous small improvements have had a major impact on cost. ‘We’re reaping the benefits of 30 years of research in Europe, without have to make the same mistakes that they did,’ Mr Bergin says.

C. Electricity can be produced from coal at around 4 cents per kilowatt-hour, but only if the environmental costs are ignored. ‘Australia has the second cheapest electricity in the world, and this makes it difficult for renewable to compete,’ says Richard Hunter of the Australian Ecogeneration Association (AEA). Nevertheless, the AEA reports: ‘The production cost of a kilowatt-hour of wind power is one-fifth of what it was 20 years ago,’ or around 7 cents per kilowatt-hour.

D. Australian Hydro has dozens of wind monitoring stations across Australia as part of its aim to become Australia’s pre-eminent renewable energy company. Despite all these developments, wind power remains one of the few forms of alternative energy where Australia is nowhere near the global cutting edge, mostly just replicating European designs.

E. While wind may currently lead the way, some consider a number of technologies under development have more potential. In several cases, Australia is at the forefront of global research in the area. Some of them are very site-specific, ensuring that they may never become dominant market players. On the other hand, these newer developments are capable of providing more reliable power, avoiding the major criticism of windmills – the need for back-up on a calm day.

F. One such development uses hot, dry rocks. Deep beneath South Australia, radiation from elements contained in granite heats the rocks. Layers of insulating sedimentation raise the temperatures in some location to 250° centigrade. An Australian firm, Geoenergy, is proposing to pump water 3.5 kilometres into the earth, where it will travel through tiny fissures in the granite, heating up as it goes until it escapes as steam through another drilled hole.

G. No greenhouse gases are produced, but the system needs some additional features if it is to be environmentally friendly. Dr Prue Chopra, a geophysicist at the Australian National University and one of the founders of Geoenergy, note that the steam will bring with it radon gas, along through a heat exchanger and then sent back underground for another cycle. Technically speaking, hot dry rocks are not a renewable source of energy. However, the Australian source is so large it could supply the entire country’s needs for thousands of years at current rates of consumption.

H. Two other proposals for very different ways to harness sun and wind energy have surfaced recently. Progress continues with Australian company EnviroPower’s plans for Australia’s first solar chimney near Mildura, in Victoria. Under this scheme, a tall tower will draw hot air from a greenhouse built to cover the surrounding 5 km². As the air rises, it will drive a turbine* to produce electricity. The solar tower combines three very old technologies – the chimney, the turbine and the greenhouse – to produce something quite new. It is this reliance on proven engineering principles that led Enviropower’s CEO, Richard Davies, to state: There is no doubt this technology will work, none at all.’

I. This year, Enviropower recognized that the quality of sunlight in the Mildura district will require a substantially larger collecting area than was previously thought. However, spokesperson kay Firth says that a new location closer to Mildura will enable Enviropower to balance the increased costs with extra revenue. Besides saving in transmission costs, the new site ‘will mean increased revenue from tourism and use of power for telecommunications. We’ll also be able to use the outer 500 metres for agribusiness.’ Wind speeds closer to the tower will be too high for farming.

J. Another Australian company, Wavetech, is achieving success with ways of harvesting the energy in waves. Wavetech’s invention uses a curved surface to push waves into a chamber, where the flowing water column pushes air back and forth through a turbine. Wavetech was created when Dr Tim Devine offered the idea to the world leader in wave generator manufacturers, who rather surprisingly rejected it. Dr Devine responded by establishing Wavetech and making a number of other improvements to generator design. Wavetech claims that, at appropriate sites, ‘the cost of electricity produced with our technology should be below 4 cents per kilowatt-hour.

K. The diversity of forms of greenhouse – friendly energy under development in Australia is remarkable. However, support on a national level is disappointing. According to Richard Hunter of the AEA, ‘Australia has huge potential for wind, sun and wave technology. We should really be at the forefront, but the reality is we are a long way behind.’

Write about the following topic:

The end of the world’s fossil fuel resources and the subsequent changes will be a positive development in society. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your knowledge or experience.

You should write at least 250 words.

Sample Band 9 Essay

Today’s society overwhelmingly depends on products made from fossil fuels. Most people would initially think about fuel for transport, but of course, fossil fuels are part of most of the fabric of life around us, from the plastics on our furniture to the pavements that we walk on. Changing our reliance on these resources can have various consequences; however, I believe that overall the society will benefit from finding viable alternatives for them.

Depending on whether eco-friendly alternatives are developed, the positive effect on transport and the reduction of the associated pollution will be significant. Exhaust fumes from motor vehicles, planes and ships decrease air quality and contribute to global warming and the greenhouse effect. People’s health and the health of the planet will surely improve without these industries relying on fossil fuels. It could be that a type of transport crisis could develop as a result if society can no longer provide the power to transport so many individuals to where they want to go. This, however, does not have to be a bad thing, as it could force society to use alternative solutions, such as transport sharing and public transport development. The change in mind set has already begun. Some countries have already committed to having fossil fuel free transport and more cities are banning private vehicles from the centre of cities.

Another positive development would be that more time and money would have to be put into developing renewable sources of energy, such as wind power, solar power, hydropower and tidal power. Technologies would improve and be more efficient and again, the world would use fewer sources of energy that cause pollution. This development can also be seen today, with many governments committing to proportions of their power needs coming from renewable resources.

I, therefore, strongly agree with the statement that the changes from reducing reliance on fossil fuels will be positive. The only caveat is that society will need to have developed alternative sources of power rather soon, in order to avoid an energy crisis.

Renewable energy is inexhaustible and a clean alternative to fossil fuels. In this article, we will learn about the types and sources of renewable energy.

What is Renewable Energy?

Renewable energy is energy that is produced from natural processes and continuously replenished. A few examples of renewable energy are sunlight, water, wind, tides, geothermal heat, and biomass. The amount of investment in 2015 was about 286 billion dollars and major sectors were biofuel, solar power, wind, and hydroelectricity.

The existence of renewable energy resources is spread over a wide geographical area in comparison to the conventional energy resources which are often concentrated in a limited number of countries like the oil and gas are mostly concentrated in the Middle East countries. The use of renewable energy resources in energy generation is resulting in less pollution and has a significant effect on economic benefits and energy security.

Examples of Renewable Energy

We can define renewable energy as those energies which can never be depleted. The importance of renewable energy is invaluable. These types of energy sources are different from fossil fuels, such as oil, coal, and natural gas. Some examples of renewable energy sources are:

• Wind energy
• Solar energy
• Geothermal energy
• Biomass energy

Sources of Renewable Energy

The sources could sustain for a longer period of time and can easily be renewed often. Sustainable sources are biomass, nuclear power, geothermal, wind energy, solar power, tidal power, and wave power.

The sources of renewable energy are known to be less polluting and therefore the whole world is looking forward to new carbon emission norms, where carbon will play a major role in developing new factories and industries. They will be rated according to the carbon emission and the products that they are producing will be rated accordingly.

Types of Renewable Energy

• Solar Energy:  The radiant light and heat energy from the sun is harnessed with the use of solar collectors. These solar collectors are of various types such as photovoltaics, concentrator photovoltaics, solar heating, (CSP) concentrated solar power, artificial photosynthesis, and solar architecture. This collected solar energy is then used to provide light, heat, and different other forms of electricity.
• Wind Energy:  The energy we get from winds is known as wind energy. For this, windmills have been used for hundreds of years to pump out water from the ground. We use large tall wind turbines that allow winds to generate electricity. The natural airflow on the surface of the earth is used to run the wind turbines. The modern-day wind turbines range from about 600 Kilowatt to 5 Megawatts, for commercial purposes these are rated with an output power of 1.5 to 3 Megawatts. The most preferred locations for these wind turbines to be installed are the areas which and strong and have constant airflows on offshore and sites that are at high altitudes. The power generated from wind energy in 2015 met 4% of global energy consumption.
• Hydroelectricity:  According to statistics, hydroelectricity generated around 16.6% of the global energy resources and constituted about 70% of all renewable electricity. This energy is another alternative source of energy that is generated by the construction of dams and reservoirs on the flowing water, the kinetic energy from the flowing water is used to run the turbines which generate electricity. Tidal power converts the energy of tides and Wave power which captures the energy from the surface of the ocean waves for power generation. These two forms of hydropower also have huge potential in electric power generation.
• Geothermal Energy:  It is the energy that is generated from the thermal energy which is stored in the earth. The heat energy is captured from sources such as hot springs and volcanoes and this heat is directly used by industries for heating the water and other purposes.
• Biomass Energy:  This type of energy is derived from biomass which is a type of biological material derived from living organisms and plant-derived materials which are called lignocellulosic biomass. Biomass can be directly used via combustion to produce heat and indirectly it can be used to convert to biofuels. Biomass can be converted to other usable forms of energy such as transportation fuels like ethanol, biodiesel, and methane gas.

Academic Writing

The Academic Writing test will take 60 minutes to complete the test. You are asked to write 2 tasks, task 1 of at least 150 words, and task 2 of at least 250 words. In task 1 you’ll be given a table, chart, process diagram, or graph and you’ll have to describe it in around 150 words for which you can take 20 minutes. In task 2, a topic will be given and you should write a 250-word essay.

General Training Writing

In the General Training test , you will have only 60 minutes to complete the test. There are 2 tasks, where you’ll have to write a 150 words essay for Task 1 and 250 words essay for task 2.

In task 1 you’ll have to write a letter, for example, a request letter. In task 2, it’ll be the same as Academic Writing where you’ll have to write a 250-word response according to the question given.

Green: Hawaii Should Consider Liquefied Natural Gas As A Bridge To 100% Renewable Energy

The governor wants all options on the table for lowering the state’s electricity costs while ridding itself of fossil fuels.

Liquefied natural gas must be considered as Hawaii works to meet its clean energy goal of being completely renewable by 2045, Gov. Josh Green said this week at the Hawaii Energy Conference.

The state had been open to LNG under the Abercrombie administration, and Hawaiian Electric Co. was even pursuing its development, but the Ige administration flatly opposed it so the utility scrapped its plans.

Speaking Wednesday at the conference on Maui, Green said LNG must be part of the mix as the state considers ways to lower energy costs, build energy resilience and lower its carbon footprint. He has asked his chief energy officer to conduct a full-scale analysis of every possible energy source, except nuclear, that can accelerate Hawaii’s transition away from fossil fuel dependence.

“Can I be blunt? One of those ways is liquefied natural gas and that gives a lot of people hives. I get it. I do. But if the goal is to use less carbon and get there sooner so that we are actually renewable, we have to have everything on the table,” Green said.

If Hawaii fails to meet its renewable energy mandate, the state will continue to burn fossil fuels at “an alarming rate,” Green said, adding that consumers will continue to pay some of the highest energy costs in the nation and more local families will move to the mainland.

“There has to be some form of bridge between now and 2045,” he said. “We don’t have the luxury in the moment to take any options off the table.”

Green acknowledged that importing LNG would constitute an about-face in state policy. In 2015, then-Gov. David Ige came out strongly against LNG, saying it would only prolong Hawaii’s dependence on fossil fuels and cause strife among residents over siting LNG terminals.

But Hawaii has gone back and forth on whether to invest in LNG. Former Gov. Neil Abercrombie in 2012 directed HECO to look into pursuing natural gas as a fuel source for its generators.

In his letter to HECO at the time, Abercrombie said Hawaii is committed to a clean energy future anchored by energy efficiency and local renewable sources like wind, solar, hydroelectric and geothermal. But it would be prudent to consider LNG because it could be a cheaper and cleaner fuel than petroleum oil that could reduce consumer energy bills, he said.

Abercrombie’s stance was a pivot from that of former Gov. Linda Lingle. During her administration, the state and utilities signed the Hawaii Clean Energy Initiative that laid out the state’s plan for switching to renewable sources without using LNG. 

On Wednesday, Green seemed to echo some of Abercrombie’s thinking. He said he loves solar and wind power but is worried Hawaii “may languish for a long time” as it tries to build it out in the islands where it’s more expensive than on the mainland.

The governor’s remarks caught some conference participants off guard.

“It took me by surprise. No judgment,” said Ben Sullivan, deputy director of Honolulu’s climate change office . “It was provocative.”

Although the thought of importing a fossil fuel gives him pause, Sullivan said he understands why the governor is considering all options given the high cost of living.

Jennifer Potter, a former member of the Hawaii Public Utilities Commission, was also somewhat taken aback by Green’s LNG comments. Importing natural gas is no short-term strategy and it’s wrong to think of it as a “bridge fuel,” she said.

“Moving to LNG would require a great deal of investment in infrastructure including terminals at the port. We have all agreed that 100% renewables is the goal for the state,” Potter said. “It begs the question of whether making an investment that would last decades is consistent with the public vision and stated goals.”

HECO wasn’t surprised by Green’s LNG position and is neutral about the possibility, according to a spokesman.

“We appreciate the governor’s comments about finding the right path to 2045 that balances reliability, decarbonization and cost,” said spokesman Jim Kelly.

The utility supports the state energy office’s work to build a comprehensive inventory of sources, including LNG, that could be part of the state’s energy portfolio.

But Kelly said it’s important to remember the history of LNG over the past decades in Hawaii.

“In one administration pursuing LNG was a state policy imperative and in the next administration it was banned. We’re aligned on our decarbonization and clean energy goals and we have to be aligned on what path we’ll be taking to reach 2045,” he said.

Colin Yost, one of the three current PUC members, said he thinks parts of Hawaii, perhaps not Oahu, could come close to reaching the state’s clean energy goal within six years, with renewables accounting for 60% of energy production by 2030.

“I know for Maui, for the Big Island … that should be eminently achievable,” Yost said, noting that he was speaking as an individual and not on behalf of the PUC. “On Kauai, you have already seen it demonstrated that they got there.”

The member-owned Kauai Island Utility Cooperative used to be an investor-owned utility that charged ratepayers the highest costs for electricity in the state. But after island residents organized, raised cash and turned the utility into a cooperative in 2002, what eventually followed was a transition to renewable energy that combined solar, hydro and biomass.

The co-op now makes nearly 60% of its energy from renewables, and Kauai residents pay the lowest electricity rates in the state, according to Beth Amaro, KIUC communications manager, who also spoke at the conference.

KIUC considered LNG at one point “but it didn’t make sense,” said Jan TenBruggencate, vice-chairman of the co-op’s board.

“The infrastructure requirement for LNG was going to be a big financial hit. We opted to continue our progress toward fully renewable generation,” he said.

Green said there’s plenty of money available in the private sector and in Washington to assist Hawaii if it takes aggressive steps to move toward renewables.

During a trip to Los Angeles earlier this month to attend the Milken Institute Global Conference , Green said he spoke with multibillionaires who are looking to make investments “in the climate space” where bold initiatives are being undertaken to move away from fossil fuels.

“There’s an appetite for that,” he said. “I think you’ll be surprised how much money will come into the state to do it if we’re bold.”

He also said the Department of Energy is interested in making good on President Joe Biden’s pledge to help Hawaii following the Lahaina tragedy.

Hawaii Chief Energy Officer Mark Glick said he’s hopeful that the state will receive a $250 million award from the Department of Energy for the installation of temperature sensors, high-tech weather stations and other strategies to harden the grid and increase Hawaii’s resilience to climate change impacts.
