Importance Of A Timetable In Student's Life

essay on timetable

A well-constructed timetable  establishes a natural rhythm and routine, which can be comforting to teachers and students. Having a plan as a learner is very important as it helps you maximize and prioritize on the things that are of urgency or importance. Students who follow a timetable are more likely to manage their time well, finish their tasks on time, and get better grades, according to a research in the Journal of Educational Psychology. According to a report Students who used a timetable had an average GPA of 3.28  , while those who did not use one had a GPA of 2.84.

Most students do not have an organized study plan and if they do, they fail to follow the plan drawn. Let us discuss some important points which will help you understand the importance of a timetable.

  • Prevents wastage of time and energy : The timetable shows exactly what is to be done at a particular time. It, thus, directs the attention of the pupil to one thing at a time. Thus, one's energy is automatically directed in a particular direction which prevents wastage of time and energy . It also prevents confusion, duplication, overlapping and unnecessary repetition on the part of the pupil and the teacher.
  • Ensures equitable distribution of time : The timetable gives due place, extension and emphasis to various subjects and activities, according to their relative importance or difficulty. This is very essential for the all-round development of a child. According to a National Education Association survey, 70% of teachers agree that having a predictable and well-planned schedule aids in students' academic progress. This ensures that while the more important subjects and activities get more attention and time, the less important ones are not neglected.
  • Helps in the formulation of good habits : A good timetable aids in inculcating the habits of orderliness, punctuality and steadiness of purpose in children. It ensures regularity and even progress. It develops a methodical attitude towards work among pupils. Such adherence to a pre-arranged plan of work is the secret of success by preventing laxity.
  • Helps in achieving desired goals : Following a timetable steadily ensures consistency in efforts to achieve a significant goal. Be it achieving a certain score or a target position, giving it a place in the daily routine makes sure that efforts are being made regularly to accomplish the set goal. According to a survey by the website Edutopia, 85% of teachers think that setting up a schedule is crucial for students' performance.
  • Regulates Body Clock : The so-called body clock keeps body processes running according to a schedule. It is a 24-hour cycle that regulates the timing of processes like eating, sleeping, and temperature control . If you have a fixed bedtime along with a fixed wake-up hour, your body clock knows exactly when to produce which hormone according to your activities along the day such as eating, studying, playing, etc.
  • Ensures Discipline: Scheduling a timetable will ensure all your activities are listed and thereby  ensures  time management along with discipline. This also leads to a better focus as the child is concentrating on one task without worrying about others.

How to follow a timetable? One of the key ways to follow a timetable is by having a few fun, informative, and productive activities interspersed throughout the day. In the situation that this coronavirus outbreak has put us in, setting a routine and following it becomes even more essential and challenging at the same time.

The presence of a timetable will make sure that the child gets some break during the day along with studies and it would help your child stay on track even in times like these when maintaining a balanced schedule is more difficult. When your child develops the habit of self-discipline, accomplishing tasks will be easier for him/her. His productivity will increase and help him to move much closer to success and happiness.

  • How to make the perfect time table

Do you find yourself pressed for time during examinations? This is a common problem amongst students during examinations or even otherwise.

Here is where the popular use of the timetable can come to your aid. A time table can be defined as a written plan or schedule depicting the sequence of events in a particular time slot.

We can say that a plan is “what” and a schedule is “when” and it takes both a plan and a schedule to get things done.

For students especially, creating a timetable can be of great value. The importance of a timetable cannot be undermined.

Below, we have reiterated the facts that support the use of a timetable by students, during their academic journey.

1. Brings Routine Into Your Life

Routine is very important in life. Routine can be defined as a sequence of events which are regularly followed. A research conducted by Jennifer Weil Malatras, Psychologist at University at Albany, found that individuals who grow up with predictable daily routines are less likely to have time management or attention problems as adults.

The research stated that “While certainly preliminary, our study contributes to the understanding that regularity in daily routines may help to promote time management skills and, in turn, reduce the experience of attention difficulties in adulthood”.

2. Saves Time

Clock in a cart

Another reason why timetable is important is that it saves time. It prevents wastage of time.

Since a timetable assigns particular tasks to be completed within a specific time, it allows the students to concentrate on one particular task for that time. Time management skills have been seen to have positive effects on students.

In a research conducted in 2019 by Richelle V Adams and Erik Blait and published in SAGE Open it was stated that Effective time management is associated with greater academic performance and lower level of anxiety in students.

3. Energy Saver

Apart from saving time, preparing a time table also saves energy. It avoids duplication and overlapping of events. With a planned time table, students can always be sure that they will not repeat an unnecessary task.

4. Time Management

One of the advantages of a timetable for students is that it allocates time according to the demand of the task.

For example, while making a time table to study two different subjects in a day, one being easy and one difficult, you can allocate appropriate time for the two subjects.

More time can be allocated for the subject which is difficult and less time for the easier subject. This way, the time has been distributed according to the level of the task in hand.

5. Goals Are Not Too Far

essay on timetable

With a well prepared timetable your goals are not tough to achieve. A timetable ensures that you are constantly reminded of the tasks to be completed. A time table allows you to focus more on your goals .

6. Sets the Pattern for A Perfect Circadian Rhythm

Circadian rhythms are physical, mental, and behavioral changes that follow a 24-hour cycle.

Each organ and tissue in our body have biological clocks that regulate the circadian rhythm. Let’s dig deeper and find out how this circadian rhythm is connected to routine and why a timetable is important.

The Circadian rhythms help to set a routine in the body. It tells the body when to perform a particular function.

So the biological clock tells the body that it is day time and the body must be awake while as night approaches the body feels tired and sleepy and the biological clock in the brain tells the body that it is night and time to sleep.

Circadian rhythms function in all aspects of the body. It tells the body when it is hungry, regulates the body temperature and releases hormones.

You may wonder how a timetable figures in the Circadian Rhythm? Well, following a time table can train your body to work perfectly and on time .

Having a fixed time table for hours of study, perfect sleep hours, and eating timings, will allow your body to produce the right hormones at the right time and therefore help to keep the body in perfect condition.

7. De-Stressing

Setting a study timetable can also be de-stressing. When you set a time table you divide your time for different subjects.

The time table shows you what you have to do and how much time you must spend on it. Knowing what you have to do in a day will help you plan well in advance and avoid last minute studying and stressful cramming during the examinations.

Having a less stressful study plan will directly lead to greater scores and more time for extracurricular activities .

8. Avoids Procrastination

essay on timetable

Another importance of a study time table is that it helps to avoid procrastination. How does a time table help to avoid procrastination? When you prepare a timetable and follow the time table.

It shows you what to do, when to do it and how much time you must take to complete that task. You tend to complete the tasks according to the timetable in the prescribed time, thus avoiding procrastination .

As we all know that we should never do tomorrow what we can do today. Procrastination is the thief of time.

Now that we have some of the benefits of a time table let’s look at how to prepare a perfect time table that will help you plan your study schedule.

Making a time table may seem easy. However, making the perfect timetable requires planning and a bit of brain power.

While making the perfect time  table, a lot of factors have to be kept in mind.

Depending on what suits you, you must prepare your time table accordingly. Do not make time table depending on your friend’s timetable. Make a timetable that suits your learning style and your body functioning.

2. Prepare a Realistic Timetable

Remember to prepare a timetable that includes a couple of breaks and time for your recreational activities and hobbies too. As the saying goes, “All work and no play, makes Jack a dull boy.”

A study timetable is a handy, inexpensive tool that can help you get control over your study time. Basically, a study timetable gives you a perspective of how much time you have to complete all your prioritized tasks, like exam prep for all your classes. If you want to get organized and feel motivated to get your work done, we'll teach you everything you need to know about study timetables. So, leap right into this straightforward article to unlock your full academic potential! This article is based on an interview with our educational consultant, Alexander Ruiz. Check out the full interview here.

Things You Should Know

  • Review the syllabi from all your classes to create the most detailed timetable.
  • Set aside special blocks of time that are reserved for studying your material.
  • Factor small breaks into your timetable so you'll be refreshed and stress-free.
  • Revise your timetable whenever a new development, like extra credit, comes up.

essay on timetable

  • Remember—any sacrifices you make are temporary. You'll be able to go back to your everyday routines after your big exam or assignment.

Alexander Ruiz, M.Ed.

  • It’s totally fine if you take off some days to enjoy yourself. Just be sure to make up the difference later!

Step 2 Collect all the information you can about your class.

  • For example, maybe your professor assigns a lot of small and super achievable assignments, like weekly reflection papers, and only gives one mid-term.
  • On the other hand, your professor might be more tough and assign bi-monthly exams. Or, they may expect you to turn in multiple drafts of any essay.
  • See which tasks are more time-consuming. For instance, maybe you’re a whiz at pre-lab assignments, but you need to dedicate a couple hours each day to quantum mechanics.

Step 3 Decide which times are optimal for studying.

  • Look for times when you won't have any distractions—for instance, you might be completely free to study from 7 A.M. to 10 A.M. or 5 P.M. to 8 P.M.

Step 4 Create your timetable grid.

  • Try out spreadsheet programs, like Microsoft Excel or Apple Numbers . Or, experiment with some of the templates that your word processor—like MS Word —offers. [6] X Research source
  • Some apps specialize in study timetables—for instance “My Study Life” helps you record and track all of your exams and assignments.
  • If you're frequently online or on your phone, a physical paper timetable might be the best option for you. You’ll be able to refer to it without getting distracted by your tech.
  • You can also combine paper and digital formats: use your computer to print out a grid that you’ve already added days and times to, then print out as many as you like and fill them out by hand.

Step 5 Draw the grid for your timetable.

  • If you’re making a timetable by hand on paper, use regular notebook paper or blank paper and draw your lines with a ruler for a clean look.
  • The biggest downside to the paper-and-pencil method is that it can be pretty labor intensive if you need to make tweaks on multiple pages.
  • Your safest bet is to use a digital program, like Google Sheets . After all, you might end up adding more blocks on your timetable if your teacher assigns new material, like quizzes or extra credit assignments.
  • However, lots of people prefer to study and organize their time on paper, so you should do whatever motivates you best.
  • Reader Poll: We asked 456 wikiHow readers and 62% of them agreed that their preferred way to schedule their study time is by making paper revision timetables . [Take Poll]

Step 6 Choose a timetable template that you'll use every week.

  • Take into account big assignments or final exams and update your study schedule by adding blocks of times you'll use to study for them.
  • Factor in extracurriculars that you identified earlier, like holidays or sports. Fill in squares to represent blocks of time in which you won’t be studying.

Step 1 Block your study times.

  • Have a day where you're super busy? That's totally fine—just look for a block of time that's available. Even 45 minutes can keep you ahead of the game when it comes to studying.
  • If you have some classes that are really challenging for you, it's a good call to set aside more time to study for them. For example, if French is a breeze, squirrel away 1 hour for it. However, if you have to rack your brain over Statistics, devote a whole 4 hours to review the ins and outs of it. [10] X Research source
  • Bear in mind that you don't have to force yourself to stay on task for 4 continuous hours without a single break—we'll cover that in the next step.

Step 2 Schedule time for breaks.

  • Many experts recommend that you work for 45 minutes every hour, and then take a break for 15 minutes. Everyone is different, though, so experiment to find what works best for you. [12] X Research source
  • If you think you thrive with regular breaks, or if you tend to get a little restless, try the "Pomodoro Method": during the block of time that you're studying, commit to 25 minute stretches of concentrated work, then take 5 minute breaks. [13] X Research source
  • For an extra boost to your health, build in activity breaks—for example, go for a 15-minute walk or make use of a 5-minute break by doing a set of push ups, sit ups, or body weight deadlifts.

Step 3 Be as specific as possible.

  • Things will change over time, of course, and something you planned 2 months ago may not apply anymore. If that's the case, use a pen to draw an "X" through any assignments or tests you no longer have to take.
  • Homework's also great to add to your timetable. For example, if you always have 20 math problems to do each week, record that in your timetable.
  • Scribble in new updates that come up, too. For example, if two teachers are offering extra credit opportunities, factor that into your study timetable.

Step 4 Schedule multiple subjects during each session.

  • Of course, this can change once exam time rolls around and you need to devote all your energy to a single subject!

Step 5 Color code your timetable to keep track of all your classes.

  • You might want to use colored pencils if it’s on paper. Or you could highlight things on the computer and print in color.
  • If you’re using an online-only app, you'll usually have to stick with the range of colors it provides (i.e., blue, green, orange, and pink).
  • Consider an online program like Canva . You'll have tons of templates to choose from. You can even add fun digital stickers, like bubbling beakers to represent your Chemistry class.
  • You can even buy some awesome and vibrant timetables on sites like Amazon or Etsy .

Step 1 Stick to the plans and obligations you agreed to.

  • If an emergency comes up, take care of what you need to. Just be sure to find extra blocks of time later in the week to make up the difference.
  • All that dedication gives you a great chance to treat yourself later. Grab some ice cream, phone some friends, or play some video games when you finish. After you're done with all your classes, you can even throw a little party.

Step 2 Relax whenever you make any tiny slip-ups.

  • If you want to, meditate, move around, or chat with a friend right before you jump into all your coursework. In fact, research suggests it's smart to unwind before all the hard work you'll do. [18] X Research source

Step 3 Revise your timetable if you need to adjust your study schedule.

  • If you have to make a lot of adjustments, a digital timetable might your best bet.
  • If you prefer a physical copy, make sure your timetable has lots of empty squares so you can fill in new information.
  • If you want a change, such as switching from a pen-and-paper timetable to one on an app, that's totally fine—it's important to do what feels sustainable for you.

Tools of Time Management for Students Essay

The Strategies of Time Management

This paper suggests the tools of time management for students. It explains why planning is crucial for their performance and provides evidence-based research. The paper presents several strategies that can improve academic results and illustrates the reasons for their efficiency. The study proves that time management, including prioritizing, creating a schedule, and developing goals, can make a significant contribution to students’ performance.

Time management is crucial for students’ academic performance. According to Gütl, Rizzardini, Chang, and Morales (2014), if individuals want to complete university courses, they should be prone to discipline and focus and have time-management and planning skills. Sometimes planning is more important than learning abilities because it is necessary for students to complete their projects on time. However, people tend to underestimate the amount of time required for a project and are unable to prioritize tasks (Oettingen, Kappes, Guttenberg, & Gollwitzer, 2015). Procrastination is also one of the outcomes of ineffective time-management and planning. Many students are unable to maintain a balance between their studies and leisure time, which results in academic failures (Panek, 2014). There are several strategies and tools that students can use to schedule their life and improve their academic performance.

First, as it was mentioned above, it is crucial to prioritize. Students can write down all of the projects they need to complete and the deadlines for those. It can help them understand which task they should start to work on earlier, and what preparation they might need to do to complete all of the projects on time. The second step is creating a timetable including all of the tasks. Students can use calendars, mobile apps, or paper planners. It is necessary to include sleep and other essential activities in the schedule as well to reduce the risk of stress and burnout. However, it is crucial to concentrate on the projects that need to be completed. Thirdly, it is necessary to eliminate distractions while working on the tasks. For example, students can put their phones away while they are studying or use the Pomodoro technique that involves twenty-five minutes of work and five to ten-minute-long breaks.

Being motivated is not always helpful as it is vital to staying organized and determined to do the best job. However, finding motivation is crucial, as it can be a driving force of the good academic performance. To do so, students should reward themselves for adhering to the schedule and completing their tasks on time. It is also necessary to review one’s goals and remember the reason for the desire to study well.

It is also crucial for individuals to study at what time of the day they can be the most productive. For some people, it can be early morning, while others prefer working late at night. Scheduling the tasks at that time can significantly improve productivity. It is necessary to remember that time-management is not a restricting but a liberating practice as it allows students to be confident in their performance and have more time for personal tasks.

Time management is an essential part of the studying process. Without planning, it is impossible to ensure excellent academic performance since there are many tasks that have to be scheduled. Students can adopt time management strategies to improve their academic results and to do so, they can start with creating a list of tasks and a timetable, as well as learning to prioritize and focus. Such a simple step can make a significant impact on the learning process and academic performance.

Essay on Time Management (1)

“Time isn’t the main thing, it’s the only thing”- Mile Davis.

Time management is a prestigious topic for budding subconscious minds. It is one of the most crucial skills that you must inculcate from early on. This skill has vital importance when you move into a professional setting. It is extremely important to manage time efficiently as not managing time can create many problems in your day-to-day life. It is also a common essay topic in the school curriculum and various academic and competitive exams like IELTS , TOEFL , SAT , UPSC , etc. This blog brings you samples of essays on time management with tips & tricks on how to write an essay.

Essay on Time Management in 200 words

Time stops for none and is equal for all. Everyone has the same 24 hours in a day but some people make better use of time than others. This is one of the most important reasons some people are experts in what they do. Therefore, time management plays a vital role in both personal as well as professional lives.

Time management is basically an effort made consciously to spend a certain amount of time performing a task efficiently. Furthermore, it is estimated that to have better results, one needs to do productive work. Thus, productivity is the key focus here. Moreover, maintaining a careful balance between professional life, social life, and any other hobbies or activities is a great example of efficient time management.

Time management is also crucial for students from an academic perspective as students require to cover many subjects. Thus, efficiently managing time is an important skill in everyone’s life.  Around the world, there are two views for time management – linear time view and multi-active time view. The linear time view is predominant in America, Germany and England, and it aims at completing one task at a time. Whereas a multi-active view aims at completing a number at once and is predominant in India and Spain. Nevertheless, time management is one of the important traits of a successful individual, students are advised to follow whichever is convenient for them.

Essay on Time Management in 300 Words

Time Management is a key skill for job opportunities as employers recruit candidates who have this efficient skill. Thus, it is advised to initiate inculcating this vital skill as soon as possible. In the academic setting, time management plays a vital role and helps in the accomplishment of tasks efficiently and effectively.

Time management is the process of planning and performing pre-scheduled activities with the aim of increasing productivity, effectiveness and efficiency. Different cultures hold different views on Time Management. However, a multi-active time view and a linear time view are the two predominant views. In a linear time view, the aim is set to complete one particular task at a time whereas, in a multi-active view, the focus is on completing a greater number of tasks at once. Emphasis is given on productivity and effectiveness, but students are free to choose their own view of time management.

Time management is crucial as it is helpful in setting a timeline for achieving a particular goal. Moreover, it also increases the efficiency of the tasks at hand. It becomes necessary for working professionals as they need to balance their personal and professional life. Thus, they do not have time to dwell on each and every detail in every task. In such cases, a multi-active view is one of the helpful methods. Time management works best when a goal or target is set. For instance, a student becomes far more effective at learning when they decide to assign 2 hours for learning a particular concept. This is effectively a method of benchmarking progress. So, every time the activity is performed, one can measure themselves and improve upon various aspects of their tasks. The clear conclusion is that time management is a crucial skill for students and working professionals. Thus, everyone must practise time management to improve productivity and efficiency of tasks.

How to Create a Study Schedule

essay on timetable

If you want to succeed in your academic career, you’re going to need to manage your time effectively. However, despite the importance of studying and completing assignments when they are due, students often have challenges allocating their time to study effectively. In fact, researchers have concluded that many students simply lack good study skills altogether, or rely on study strategies that just don’t work. One way to make the most of your time preparing for tests and assignments is to create a study schedule. Let’s take a close look at study schedules, and see if creating one can help you improve your grades and get a better grasp on complicated academic subjects.

What is a Study Schedule?

A study schedule is basically a way to organize your study routine and visualize it by using daily and weekly layouts, calendars, or apps. Creating a study schedule will help you stay organized. Tracking your academic assignments and work overtime will enable you to plan your homework and study sessions more effectively, keep track of your class schedule, and manage your time . Seeing all of your work and study requirements laid out across days, weeks or months will help you to complete your work on time and achieve your academic goals; it can also help you understand when you can afford to take a break too and may help to lower your stress level when you’re carrying a heavy academic load.

Now that you understand what a study schedule is and how it can help you, let’s talk about how to create one.

Step 1. Identify Key Study Tasks and Goals

The first thing you should do when creating a study schedule is to determine what you have to accomplish over a certain period of time. It is best to use academic time periods for your goal setting, such as semesters or marking periods. Within that given period of time, you should list out key things that you want to complete or academic tasks that have to be undertaken in order to pass a class. These goals can include completing major papers, performing lab experiments or studies, and passing mid-term exams. Wherever possible, you should determine exactly when each academic task will occur, or when it is due.

Step 2. Plot Key Tasks and Goals Over Time on a Calendar

Once you’ve identified all of your key goals and tasks, you should plot all of these key due dates on a calendar. Using a calendar will help you to visualize when and where you have to do things, so you can make a good plan for accomplishing them. Use whatever calendar system you are comfortable with. For example, if you use an app like Google Calendar, that can be a great way to record key dates and build a study schedule. We have also a l ist of the best planning apps that you check out. If you are low tech, a wall calendar will work just fine as well. If you have the space in your home or dorm room, a bulletin or dry erase board with all of the academic period’s months visible can be a great way to visualize all of your tasks and goals and when they occur, too.

Step 3.  Fill in other Key Activities

In addition to all of your key tasks and goals, your study schedule should also include other events and activities that will take up significant portions of your time. Including these other activities on your calendar will help you identify the time you have available to complete key academic work; it will also help you to prioritize the activities that you schedule so that you can complete all of your academic work. You should pencil in all of your class times, and any additional academic events you plan to attend, such as guest speakers or field trips. If you’re on a school or intramural sports team, place your practice time and scheduled games on your calendar. You should also include personal events on your schedule as well, such as family or friend get-togethers, planned vacations, parties, and other social activities.

Once all of these activities are plotted on your calendar, you’ll be able to make a study strategy.

  • HELPFUL HINT: It is a good idea to use some sort of color code to identify different activities on your calendar. For example, key academic events, such as major papers or exams, could appear on your calendar in bold red font. Social events or other less critical activities could be posted in green font. This will help increase your ability to discriminate between different activities.

Step 4. Make a Study Strategy

Once you’ve identified and plotted all of the activities you’re aware of in a given academic period, you will be ready to make a strategy to complete all of your key tasks. Now, one by one, look at each task you have to accomplish and attempt to determine the amount of work that must be done to complete it. As you review each task, you should attempt to determine the following:

  • How much time will the test, paper, presentation, etc. take to prepare?
  • How much research and/or writing will the activity involve?
  • Which subject or activity is going to give me the most challenges personally?
  • What are the short term or immediate deadlines that I have to deal with right now?

a girl in a tiger sweater is sitting at the desk

Answering these questions will enable you to better allocate your time to focus on the appropriate subject and accomplish key goals. For example, if you have a key task that is due in a few days, you will be able to prioritize work on that over other items that are less pressing. Similarly, if you have a project due in a class that is personally challenging for you, you can allocate more time (or even a conference with your professor) in order to ensure you complete it. Once you have analyzed and prioritized each of your key academic tasks , determine the time when you are going to work on each one of them and plot it on the empty spaces of your study schedule.

  • HELPFUL HINT: As you plot your study strategy, you may find that you currently don’t have enough time to complete an academic task. If that’s the case, you may have to adjust your schedule and postpone or cancel planned social or athletic events in order to ensure you have the time you need for prioritized academic work. You may also have to ask for an extension in order to complete a task to standard as well. Your study schedule will help you make the best, most informed decisions about these types of choices.

Step 5. Stick to it!

The best study schedule in the won’t be any good to you unless you use it. After you’ve fully developed your study schedule, make a point of referencing it on a routine basis. If you get in the habit of it daily, it will become a powerful tool to keep you on track to complete your academic goals. As you grow to rely more heavily on your study schedule, you may find that you need more or less time to complete certain academic tasks; if that is the case, make the necessary adjustments to ensure you make the most of the time you have available.

Being aware of the key work you have to accomplish will keep you organized and can even help to lower your stress level. Your study schedule may even help you realize that you have some free time to take a well-deserved break from your studies, and head to the local coffee shop for a latte!

Additional Thoughts on Study schedules

Once you start using your  study schedule, here are a few more things to consider to ensure you get the most out of it:

  • The syllabi you receive at the start of an academic course can help you to rapidly plot out key academic tasks and activities on your study schedule, so ensure you make use of them!
  • Be consistent. Schedule your study sessions at the same hours each day if you can. A consistent routine can help to boost your productivity.
  • Don’t forget to schedule breaks. If you overload your schedule with work, it could end up being counterproductive.
  • Don’t underestimate how much time you need to study for each class. As a general rule, you will need to read and study outside of the classroom twice as much time you spend in an actual class. That means that if you take a 12-credit semester, you will have to spend 24 hours a week studying.
  • Make sure you take into account library and lab hours; time allocated to conduct research or work at these locations won’t do you any good if they aren’t open.
  • Don’t forsake a good meal and a good sleep for pushing in more study hours.

Closing Thoughts

A study schedule can be a great asset and a powerful tool to help you accomplish key academic goals . A good study schedule will help you make the most of your time, so you can allocate the appropriate effort against key academic tasks exactly when you need to. Your calendar can also keep you organized, and help you avoid stress; it may even help you carve out a little bit of extra time to relax here and there during a challenging semester too.

And if you face trouble with completing all of your assignments before the deadline, turn to our team for help . It’s always a good idea to have someone to back you up in case of emergency. Good luck!

After you have gained an understanding of your assignment by analysing the information given to you, it is advised that you create an assignment timeline. Creating an assignment timeline can help increase your certainty and clarity over what you need to do and when.

Use the tabs to learn more about how you can plan your assignment timeline.

You may feel that it is difficult to create a timeline this early into your assignment, or that it is hard to accurately predict exactly how long each step will take. These feelings should be considered when making a plan. First you should note that your initial attempt to plan is educated guesswork.   You are simply considering what steps you think you need to take and how long they should be. As you progress through your assignment timeline you can review your plan and update the timeline to be more accurate.

Inevitably some things may take shorter or longer than you had initially planned. If you are progressing quickly that is good news as you have some extra time that could be spent on your assignment or on something else of your choosing. However, do make sure that you are confident that you have met the required marking criteria within the step if you are moving quicker than planned. If things are taking longer than planned, consider how you will adjust your timings and steps to ensure that your work can be handed in on time. If this is not possible consider if you could apply for extra time through the Late Submission Request Procedure or the Exceptional Extenuating Circumstances Procedure   .

When creating your initial plan, it may be wise to plan some leeway into your schedule. A good rule of thumb would be to plan extra time in each step. So if you expect research would take you two weeks, plan three weeks to complete it in. If it takes the normal amount of time, you have an extra week. If it takes longer then you are prepared. Another method of creating leeway is to aim to beat your deadline by submitting one week in advance.

During your studies you will often be working towards multiple assignments at once, alongside other deadlines (such as applications) and any responsibilities (work, caring, childcare etc.). When planning your assignment you should take into account that your assignment may not be your only focus. For more information on completing multiple assignments see our academic writing is assessment season livestream .

You may find it easier to plan your assignment by starting from your deadline (or your personal deadline if you are aiming to submit in advance), and working backwards to the start of your assignment. If you attribute estimated times to each step you can establish when you realistically need to start. Backwards planning allows you to consider the whole process, so that you allow crucial time for referencing and proofreading. Proofreading, for example, is an opportunity to evaluate if you have hit the marking criteria, and then to make any necessary actions (such as further reading or rewriting a paragraph). If this step is undervalued in planning then you may find flaws in your work but not have the time to fix them.

If you would like to know more about how to time manage or how to motivate yourself throughout your academic writing timeline, see our Improving Marks in Academic Writing Guide.

In this episode of the Assignment Journey Podcast Alex and Diana (Skills Graduate Placement), discuss how you can use your understanding of the assignment to structure your assignment. They go through what is expected in an introduction, main body and conclusion of an essay as well as a simple paragraph structure.

Do you ever feel overwhelmed by writing?

How to Create an Effective Writing Schedule Blog Photo

Your teacher or professor assigns a writing project, and you think “I don’t even know how to start?”  Or do you struggle to begin any other piece of writing that seems large?   Even experienced writers get nervous about writing something whether it’s a book, poem, blog post, essay, article, or research paper.  There is that moment where a writer asks, “How do I do this?” The best thing to do then is to think through what you must do and create a writing schedule. It is the roadmap to completing a final draft.

There are 4 key steps to creating a schedule: 1) understanding the project, 2) listing what you need to do, 3) selecting the time and dates when you will do your tasks, and 4) keeping on task.

Let’s dive into how to create an effective writing schedule for your next project.

4 Steps to Creating an Effective Writing Schedule

4 Easy Steps to Creating a Writing Schedule

Step #1:  Determine the writing goal and requirements for your project.

If you are creating a schedule for an assignment such as an essay or academic paper, you will have a description of what the assignment is and what is required.  You may have information about how the assignment is evaluated too.

Read through that information and determine what you need for your final copy.  Here are some questions to help you understand your assignment:

  • What is the goal of this project?
  • What are the specific requirements?
  • What subjects or topics do I need to write about
  • When is it due? Are there deadlines for different parts of the assignment (a date for when you need to write a rough draft)?
  • What type of writing is it? (e.g., expository, narrative, etc.)
  • What style and reference guide do I need to follow? (e.g., APA, Chicago Style Guide, MLA, etc.)

If you are writing a nonfiction book, fiction, poetry, etc. think through the goal, purpose of your project, and what the expectations are for that genre.  You may also want to think about how you will organize your project.  If it’s a poetry collection, do you have a theme each section will cover? If it’s a nonfiction book how will you organize your sections or content?  These questions will help you understand what you want to accomplish.

Step #2 List everything you need to do to complete your writing project.

Write down the tasks you need to do. Include both specific things for the writing project and phases of the writing process.  Here’s an example list for writing a research paper.

  • Brainstorm topics or ideas
  • Create a research question
  • Find sources
  • Take notes on the research
  • Organize your notes and plan what you will write
  • Write the first draft of your paper
  • Revise the draft
  • Edit your research paper
  • Hand in your final research paper

Next, look at each of these tasks and estimate how long you will take to complete each thing.  You can write these estimates next to each task.

Step 3: Create your schedule.

Look back at everything you need to do, and write down a date and time of when you will do each task.  Keep in mind both how long you think each thing will take and the deadline.  You can create a schedule in a planner you have, create a separate table or chart, or just use a calendar such as Google Calendar.

Whichever method you select you should have these categories:

  • The Writing Project Title
  • A Short Project Description
  • Date -The day on which something will be done.
  • Time -The exact time when you will work on tasks.
  • Tasks —What tasks you will accomplish.

You can use this method with any type of writing project:  article, blog, book, essay, poetry collection, etc.

Step #4 Stick to your schedule.

A writing schedule won’t help you if you don’t actually follow it.  You need to do the work and write. Here are some ideas on how to be accountable and complete your writing project.

Accountability Partners

One way to keep on track with your writing is to have an accountability partner.  An accountability partner is someone you can meet up with regularly where you each share what you accomplished.  If you haven’t done what you need to do, you can discuss why you haven’t done it and plan on how you will catch up with your work.  Accountability partners can encourage and motivate each other to keep going no matter how hard something seems.

The one downside to accountability partners is that they can’t always talk you through writing difficulties.  So, if you are not accomplishing a project because you don’t know how to write it, you should seek help from a teacher or tutor.

Writing Groups/Communities

A writing group can give you advice, tips, and feedback on your writing.  They may have a regular meeting time where everyone needs to bring their work. This approach means that you will have to have your writing done before the meeting.  You can get comments and suggestions from other members of the group.  If you want to advance your writing, getting feedback on it is a great way to further your writing talent.

However, unless you form a group based on people who all have the same project to complete, you won’t have guidance through parts of your writing assignment. If members aren’t aware of the specifics of your project, they can’t comment on whether or not your work fulfills the assignment’s goals and requirements.

Self-discipline

While each of the above methods can help you, the most important thing you need is a commitment to completing a writing project.  If you have a strong will to follow your writing schedule and the discipline to do your work each day—you will finish.  Want to learn more about sticking to your schedule?  Check out my blog post, “Academic Writing Accountability: How to Be a Productive Writer” at https://www.academicwritingsuccess.com/writing-accountability/ .

Make Your Writing Schedule

Writers who are organized and keep moving forward are writers that complete their projects.  Their projects don’t just remain good ideas in their heads—they a r e words shared with others.

Writing can transform how a reader thinks, feels, and sees the world.  Whether you are in high school, college, graduate school, or out of school, you have the potential to write something that changes the world.  Create a schedule to keep you on track and focused on completing your powerful masterpiece of writing.

This schedule sets out the timetable for use of the 3 Tactical Training Areas (TTA) used for operational low flying training by fast jets and Hercules transport aircraft. While it is likely some of the slots will not be used, no additional times will be added to those already booked.

Operational low flying is an essential skill and is practised by fixed wing aircraft between 100 feet and 250 feet; a more representative altitude at which pilots would fly in a combat scenario. The final decision to use a TTA is taken on the day itself as this kind of training can only take place when weather conditions allow.

When a TTA is active, routine low flying by other military users can take place between 500 feet and 2000 feet. When the TTA is not in use standard low flying training is permitted down to 250 feet and helicopters down to ground level. Late spring and summer are the busiest times for low flying as squadrons make full use of good weather to carry out their training.

Objections to Alito’s Refusal to Recuse

More from our inbox:, ‘math belongs to everyone,’ not just the elite few, ‘overriding a patient’s wishes is a legal, not a medical, decision’, r.f.k. jr. and history.

essay on timetable

To the Editor:

Re “ Alito Rejecting Calls to Recuse in Flag Uproar ” (front page, May 29):

Everyone has been focused on how Justice Samuel Alito can pretend to be impartial on Jan. 6 cases after the flag controversy.

The greater issue is how this episode is yet another exposure of Justice Alito’s lack of judgment. Most jurists would see the obvious conflict and recuse themselves. Justice Alito’s inability or unwillingness to extract himself from the Jan. 6 cases that come before the Supreme Court inflicts a great deal more damage to its reputation and credibility.

That leaves us stuck with a Supreme Court majority that is practicing politics when it is supposed to be providing legal guidance based on law.

Since only the Supreme Court can clean up this embarrassing conduct — and its reputation can’t sink much lower — Chief Justice John Roberts should assemble the other eight justices to hammer out rigid rules of conduct. These should require justices to demonstrate pristine behavior and institute accountability so Justice Alito can understand how ludicrous is his decision not to remove himself from cases where he has a conflict.

This should not be left to his judgment, because clearly he doesn’t demonstrate any.

Jay Margolis Delray Beach, Fla.

It strains credulity that Justice Samuel Alito could not have persuaded his wife to take down the upside-down flag indicating support for “Stop the Steal.” If he were truly distressed by this egregious show of partisanship, he surely could have argued that, given his position as one of nine people with the power to influence who the next occupant of the White House will be, he could ill afford to be associated with such blatant support for insurrection.

It is far more likely that he made no such effort because of his own extremist, partisan views. Recusal should be the bare minimum required of Justice Alito.

Mary Lewis Grow Northfield, Minn.

Justices Samuel Alito and Clarence Thomas are a lot of things, but stupid isn’t one of them. Therefore their acceptance of lavish gifts and failure to recuse themselves when dealing with cases in which they have obvious conflicts of interest must rely on something other than their lack of intelligence.

They are smart enough to know that they will suffer no consequences for their actions. Arrogance, not stupidity.

David Gluck Walnut Creek, Calif.

My compliments to Justice Samuel Alito for his candid defense distancing himself from any possible involvement in the political flag displays at two of his homes. Justice Alito’s assertions of complete impartiality are matched only by his complete tone deafness.

William Goldman Los Angeles

Re “ Jamie Raskin: How to Force Justices Alito and Thomas to Recuse Themselves in the Jan. 6 Cases ” (Opinion guest essay, nytimes.com, May 29):

Representative Jamie Raskin has laid out legal ways in which Supreme Court justices can be forced to recuse themselves from cases in which they show a bias. In this case it would be Justices Samuel Alito and Clarence Thomas. Both justices have been tied to biases favoring Donald Trump by their spouses’ actions.

If we use Mr. Raskin’s reasoning, based on constitutional law, why can’t it be used in another case involving a federal judge? Judge Aileen Cannon, presiding, more or less, on a case against Donald Trump, has seemed to be biased toward Mr. Trump.

When Mr. Trump and his attorneys have sought specific rulings, rulings that would create delays, she has repeatedly decided in their favor. Doesn’t that smack of bias? Wouldn’t that qualify for recusal?

Marshall Cossman Grand Blanc, Mich.

Re “ Solving for X in Middle Schools Has Become a National Problem ” (front page, May 22):

“When should students take algebra?” is not the most pressing question. Rather, it’s this: How do we prevent students from being filtered out of college, careers and participation in shaping our algorithm-driven 21st century?

Our cultural belief that math is for the elite few — and that most of us aren’t “math people” — allows us to justify widespread failure. Yet, math courses like basic algebra function as gatekeepers to economic access and opportunity.

The trajectory of someone’s college career can hinge on whether they pass or fail algebra. If they fail, there isn’t an obvious path back to college preparatory math; they’re simply counted out. This needs to change.

Instead of tinkering with the timing of course requirements, we need to stop using math to filter people out. That means giving all children rich math experiences from the start and committing to math literacy for every child, no matter the timetable — including algebra.

The civil rights activist Bob Moses turned his attention to algebra when he saw that status-quo math education, which denies literacy to vast numbers of students, is the civil rights issue of our time— not only for restricting opportunities for individual kids, but also for eroding the strength of our democracy as a whole. Math underlies all the decisions we make collectively, from health care to housing to voting.

Following Mr. Moses’s lead, we must invest as a nation in all our children, especially those who have been most disenfranchised, and change our cultural mind-set about who can and should do math. Math is our most powerful tool for understanding and changing the world, and math belongs to everyone.

Vicki Abeles San Francisco The writer is an author, an activist and the director of the recent documentary about America’s math crisis, “Counted Out,” as well as “Race to Nowhere” and “Beyond Measure.”

Re “ When to Treat Patients Without Their Consent ,” by Sandeep Jauhar (Opinion guest essay, May 19):

I disagree with Dr. Jauhar, who argues that doctors, not judges, should decide on involuntary medical treatment. Overriding a patient’s wishes is a legal, not a medical, decision. Taking away someone’s civil rights involves balancing their right to autonomy and self-determination against the state’s obligation to care for those unable to care for themselves (and, in some cases, to protect others).

This requires balancing competing legal imperatives, a task for which an impartial judge is required. An additional argument against Dr. Jauhar’s position is the preservation of the doctor-patient relationship, which should be one of advising and counseling, not controlling. Involving an impartial judge allows the doctor to simply follow the judge’s orders, rather than imposing orders themselves.

Marshal Mandelkern New Haven, Conn. The writer is an associate clinical professor of psychiatry at Yale School of Medicine.

Re “ R.F.K. Jr. Denounces the Removal of Confederate Statues ” (news article, nytimes.com, May 28):

Robert F. Kennedy Jr. makes a valid point when he says that “if we want to find people who are completely virtuous on every issue throughout history, we would erase all of history.”

But I wonder if there’s really such a fine line between “completely virtuous” and “slave-owner, committer of treason.”

Subscriber only, florida news | trump attorney on classified documents case: ‘we are going to start fighting every day in florida’.

The Alto Lee Adams Sr. U.S. Courthouse in Fort Pierce, where former president Donald Trump still faces federal criminal charges for allegedly mishandling classified documents pertaining to national security matters. Trump’s lead attorney says the legal team will be present for court appearances scheduled for June despite Trump’s conviction in a New York hush money trial. (Lynne Sladky/AP file)

Although U.S. District Judge Aileen Cannon has indefinitely postponed the trial date, the pretrial administration of the case continues with a busy calendar of pretrial hearings scheduled in June and July. Also during that time frame, the former president is scheduled to be sentenced after a Manhattan state court jury found him guilty Thursday on 34 counts of falsifying business records in a bid to conceal a hush money payment to a porn star before the 2016 presidential election.

In a televised appearance late Thursday evening on CNN, Todd Blanche, Trump’s lead attorney in both the classified documents case and the New York State records prosecution, acknowledged the scheduled federal court hearings that lie ahead in the Southern District of Florida and declared his legal team will be present to participate in them.

“We are going to start fighting every day in Florida,” Blanche told CNN interviewer Kaitlan Collins   shortly after the Manhattan jury found Trump guilty in the so-called “hush money case.”

“I am going to Florida next week,” Blanche said. “We have a motion to compel hearing in the case at the end of June. We have a lot of work to do. We haven’t been working on that case for the past six weeks.”

Heavy schedule ahead

Trump’s legal team faces a thicket of logistical challenges as they navigate a heavy schedule of hearings in the Florida case while preparing for Trump’s sentencing in New York, which is set for July 11. The trial judge. Acting New York State Supreme Court Justice Juan Merchan, has asked the defense and prosecution teams to file pre-sentencing papers by June 13. At some juncture, Trump will be interviewed by a probation officer for a pre-sentencing report.

Blanche noted in the interview that the defense team initially will file post-trial legal motions in New York.

“If that is not successful, as soon as we can appeal, we will,” Blanche said. “The process in New York is the sentencing and then we appeal from there.”

Asked if he believes his client would receive jail time, Blanche replied, “I have no idea.”

Legal experts doubt Trump will end up behind bars while the case is on appeal as he has not been viewed by the judge or prosecutors as a flight risk or danger to the community.

“I don’t think there is any doubt he will remain outside of custody,” said Fort Lauderdale criminal defense attorney Richard Serafini, a former Justice Department senior trial attorney in its criminal division. “He’s not going anywhere. There is virtually no chance he is going to be incarcerated pending appeal.”

In the Florida case, Trump stands charged in a 40-count superseding indictment with mishandling classified documents related to national security after he left office in January 2021. Among other things, he is alleged to have shown documents to people who were not authorized to view them.

Two of his employees, personal valet Waltine Nauta and Mar-a-Lago property manager Carlos De Oliveira, are accused of helping Trump impede the return of documents to federal law enforcement agents who sought to retrieve the materials from the Palm Beach estate.

All three men have pleaded not guilty.

Maria Korynsel shows her support near Mar-a-Lago on Thursday, May 30, 2024 in Palm Beach after former President Donald Trump was convicted of felony crimes. (John McCall/South Florida Sun Sentinel)

Trump has also pleaded not guilty to the U.S. Government’s election interference case brought by Special Counsel Jack Smith, who is prosecuting the documents case as well. The election case is also on hold pending a U.S. Supreme Court ruling on whether Trump had immunity against criminal prosecution for his actions in January 2021.

The former president also faces state election interference allegations in Georgia — charges he also denies.

Although Thursday’s conviction in New York State has no legal bearing on the two federal cases and the election case in Georgia, Trump’s lawyers have successfully delayed all three by raising a wide array of legal issues through motions to dismiss.

In Florida, Judge Cannon has yet to rule on more than a half-dozen such motions, giving rise to the heavy legal calendar now on her court docket for June. Among other things, the defense has raised allegations of vindictive prosecution, violations of attorney-client privilege, and an illegal search of Mar-a-Lago for documents by FBI agents.

Slow pretrial pace

For months, Smith’s prosecutors and the defense team led by Blanche have been bogged down in disputes over how classified documents in the case should be handled at trial.

Questions over their handling, under what is known as the Classified Information Procedures Act, are what prompted Cannon to postpone the May 20 trial date she set last year until some unspecified time.

“The Court … determines that finalization of a trial date at this juncture — before resolution of the myriad and interconnected pre-trial and CIPA issues remaining and forthcoming — would be imprudent and inconsistent with the Court’s duty to fully and fairly consider the various pending pre-trial motions before the Court, critical CIPA issues, and additional pretrial and trial preparations necessary to present this case to a jury,” Cannon wrote in a recent  order that also pushed back the case’s entire pretrial schedule.

“The Court therefore vacates the current May 20, 2024, trial date (and associated calendar call), to be reset by separate order following resolution of the matters before the Court, consistent with Defendants’ right to due process and the public’s interest in the fair and efficient administration of justice,” she wrote.

Timetable of New York, Florida court actions

Unless Judge Cannon chooses to again revise the hearing schedule, here is a snapshot of what the next months look like, according to court files and open court announcements. This list does not include filing deadlines for motions.

  • June 21: In Fort Pierce, a non-evidentiary hearing will be held before Judge Aileen Cannon on a defense motion to dismiss the indictment based on alleged unauthorized appointment and funding of special counsel.
  • June 24-26: Also in Fort Pierce, a pretrial evidentiary hearing will take place on the defendants’ consolidated motions to compel discovery and to define cope of prosecution team.

‘The Story of Souleymane’ Review: A Superb Lead Electrifies a Propulsive, Compassionate Immigration Drama

First-time actor Abou Sangare is a revelation in Boris Lojkine's pulse-quickening portrait of an undocumented Guinean delivery biker in Paris.

The Story of Souleymane

Popular on Variety

Still, even within his unenvied community of fellow asylum-seekers and unhoused strivers, Souleymane — good-natured, hardworking and handsome — has made an impression. “Souleymane of Paris!” his friends call out as he whizzes past them on the street, like he’s an aristocrat touring his lands on two wheels, rather than an undocumented gig worker keeping a largely dismissive Parisian middle class in pad thai and pizzas.

In order to pay Barry, Souleymane works every spare second he can, soldiering on even when a collision with a car injures him and damages his precious bicycle. Even then, his employment is precarious. Not only does he have to get Emmanuel to release his earnings to him, but like all couriers, he is subject to star-ratings and the complaints reporting process — a system set up exclusively to protect the user and the company at the expense of the expendable riders. Aside from everything else, “The Story of Souleymane” works as an admonition to those of us who use food delivery apps: Short of your Uber Eats courier breaking into your house and murdering your entire family, never, ever complain to the company.

Lojkine’s taut, honed screenplay, co-written by Delphine Agut (“Inshallah a Boy”), coupled with Tristan Galand’s unobtrusively elegant yet dynamic camerawork and the pacy energy of Xavier Sirven’s editing, make the film a far smoother, better oiled vehicle than Souleymane’s scraping bike. But the formal mechanics are most impressive in how they understand that their purpose is supportive, to be there to give structure to the showcase of Sangare’s extraordinary performance. Initially embodying a rangy, street-level physicality, Sangare is magnetic, but as Souleymane’s psychology is more deeply explored, there appears to be no limit to how much soul and sensitivity the actor can bring to a character who could easily have ended up a thin collection of “good immigrant” tropes.

In a showstopping climax — a gripping scene between Sangare and Nina Meurisse, playing the perfectly efficient but not unsympathetic face of French immigration bureaucracy — all the motion and confrontation of the last couple of days is funneled into one extended close-up monologue. The ticking clocks are momentarily stilled. All breaths are held. And the film’s real conflict comes into focus: the internal battle between the truth and the expedient lie, between Souleymane’s conscience and his counsel, between the devil and the deep blue sea.
