Clinical Psychology PhD

Ph.d. in clinical psychology.

Welcome to the doctoral program in Clinical Psychology Program at Teachers College, Columbia University. The Clinical Psychology Program was founded in 1947-1948. It was APA-accredited in the first group of programs that were reviewed for accreditation in 1948 and that status has been uninterrupted. Our most recent site visit from the APA occurred in 2021, and we have been accredited until June 2031.

Our program operates according to a scientist-practitioner model. We are, thus, dedicated to training students to generate empirically-based knowledge in clinical psychology and to perform clinical work that is constantly informed by traditional and emerging scholarship in the field. We expect our students to learn to expertly produce, analyze, and discuss scientific material. We also expect our students to become proficient at providing clinical services to a diverse population. And, most importantly, we expect our students to learn to integrate these two goals. As our mission statement in the TC catalog notes, “The driving goal of our Clinical Psychology Program is to provide rigorous training in both contemporary clinical science and clinical assessment and intervention.”

A good deal of the training, especially that related to research, occurs through intensive participation in a research lab directed by a specific faculty mentor. It is this context, through this lab, that students develop their scientific skills and begin presenting their work at professional conferences and publishing in professional journals. Each student, of course, is also part of a cohort of doctoral students with whom they learn, collaborate, and socialize.

In recent years, graduates of our doctoral program have gained employment in tenure-track academic positions, as research scientists in medical schools, and as clinical researchers in a broad range of treatment settings. In addition, many of our graduates practice independently as well as in community settings for under-served populations.

The list of faculty reviewing and potentially accepting applicants for each cycle is listed on the application itself. Please check the application itself or email the admissions office at

[email protected] for clarification.

PHD PROGRAM

A small number of highly qualified students are admitted each year to the PhD Program in Computer Science. Admission is very competitive, based primarily on research-oriented reference letters, academic grades, and overall experience and record. Applicants need not already hold a master’s degree; bachelor’s degree-level applicants are also encouraged to apply.

Most admitted students receive full financial support through Graduate Research Assistantships, which consist of a monthly stipend plus full tuition exemption (continuation of support is, of course, contingent upon the student’s satisfactory progress in the PhD Program and availability of funding). In addition, the Fu Foundation School of Engineering and Applied Science awards a small number of prestigious “Presidential Distinguished Fellowships.” These fellowships provide full financial support to their recipients. Applicants are strongly encouraged to seek external funding, such as government and industry fellowships. Also, Columbia rents low-cost subsidized apartments near campus for both single students and students with families.

All PhD students are expected to participate in departmental and laboratory activity full-time on-campus   throughout the program, except possibly for summer internships elsewhere. Therefore, the department does not normally consider admission of part-time students.

Also, note that it is not possible to participate in the PhD Program through the Columbia Video Network .

HOW AND WHEN TO APPLY TO THE PHD PROGRAM

All applications to our PhD Program must be made electronically . The online application system is available on the SEAS Admissions website . The deadlines for the submission of your fully completed application are:

  • Starting the PhD Program in the Spring semester: apply by November 15 of the previous year
  • Starting the PhD Program in the Fall semester: apply by December 15 of the previous year

You can still apply after these deadlines. However, be aware that applications are usually reviewed soon after the deadline, so late applications may not be processed as quickly or have the best chance of getting funding from our department.

Upcoming events, in the news, press mentions, dean boyce's statement on amicus brief filed by president bollinger.

President Bollinger announced that Columbia University along with many other academic institutions (sixteen, including all Ivy League universities) filed an amicus brief in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of New York challenging the Executive Order regarding immigrants from seven designated countries and refugees. Among other things, the brief asserts that “safety and security concerns can be addressed in a manner that is consistent with the values America has always stood for, including the free flow of ideas and people across borders and the welcoming of immigrants to our universities.”

This recent action provides a moment for us to collectively reflect on our community within Columbia Engineering and the importance of our commitment to maintaining an open and welcoming community for all students, faculty, researchers and administrative staff. As a School of Engineering and Applied Science, we are fortunate to attract students and faculty from diverse backgrounds, from across the country, and from around the world. It is a great benefit to be able to gather engineers and scientists of so many different perspectives and talents – all with a commitment to learning, a focus on pushing the frontiers of knowledge and discovery, and with a passion for translating our work to impact humanity.

I am proud of our community, and wish to take this opportunity to reinforce our collective commitment to maintaining an open and collegial environment. We are fortunate to have the privilege to learn from one another, and to study, work, and live together in such a dynamic and vibrant place as Columbia.

Admissions Requirements

The program leading to the Ph.D. degree is designed to encourage students to examine the reciprocal relationships between scholarship and performance, criticism and creativity, theory and practice. Theatre and performance are considered in relation to broader cultural and historical questions.

Students entering the program have strong backgrounds in some dimension of the academic study of performance and performance practice, ranging from performance and philosophy to literary studies, theatre history and performance theory. The program, strongly interdisciplinary in nature, is run by an interdepartmental committee and is enriched by the faculty resources of the Department of English and Comparative Literature, the School of the Arts, the Institute for Comparative Literature and Society, language departments, Anthropology, Classics, and of the Barnard College Department of Theatre. Because of its New York location, the program is attuned to emerging events in contemporary theatre and society. Students are admitted for the Ph.D. only, and receive both the M.A. and M.Phil as part of their progress toward the doctoral degree. The admissions committee carefully considers all applications, and the program encourages students with either a bachelor’s degree or a Master’s degree in any related discipline of drama, theatre, and performance research to consider applying.

A complete application to the Ph.D. in Theatre and Performance includes:

-the Columbia University Graduate School of Arts and Sciences application form (see GSAS site for details)

-transcripts from previous academic institutions (see GSAS site for details)

-a statement of academic purpose, outlining your academic interests, and possible trajectories of future work in the study of drama, theatre, and performance. Since students in the program take two years of intensive coursework, we expect that your goals and interests may well change. The statement identifies your academic orientation at the time of application.

-a critical writing sample (20pp. maximum, typically 6000 words, double-spaced). The writing sample need not be in the field of your future work, but should represent your rhetorical fluency as well as your critical, theoretical, and interpretive capabilities, preferably with regard to drama, theatre, and/or performance; you should feel free to add a note at the beginning of the sample locating it in relation to scholarly interests, or describing its place in a larger project if it is excerpted from a longer piece of writing.

-three letters of recommendation; the most effective letters are from faculty members who know you, your work, and your scholarly potential in the field well.

-applicants whose native language is not English and who have received an undergraduate degree from an institution in a country where the official language is not English are required to submit results of the TOEFL/IELTS (see GSAS site for details)

-we do not require submission of GRE general test scores. However, we encourage applicants who take the GRE to feel free to submit their results as part of their application. The admissions committee will consider GRE scores—in practice, only the verbal score—if submitted, but all applications, with or without the GRE, will be considered complete.

Application deadline : December 14, 2023

International Applicants

Columbia’s admissions process is largely the same for everyone, regardless of citizenship or country of residence. Home to one of the most internationally diverse student bodies in the country, Undergraduate Admissions staff have experience evaluating applications from a range of countries, educational backgrounds and school systems. We’re committed to reviewing each application with care, with the goal of selecting the candidates who will most benefit from—and contribute to—the Columbia experience.

A note on international application review

Members of the Undergraduate Admissions staff have read and evaluated applications from all over the world, and we’re familiar with a variety of school systems and transcripts. All applications are reviewed by region. Included with your secondary school report is a "school profile," which includes a description of the school, grading system, curriculum and extracurricular resources. If we need more information to make an informed decision or have any questions, we have the option to contact your school and to do our own research.

Columbia accepts all secondary school curricula (e.g., International Baccalaureate, Cambridge A Levels, National School curricula, etc.), and applications are reviewed within the context of your curriculum. Internal and external exam results—such as A Level, International Baccalaureate, French Baccalaureate, Advanced Placement (AP) exams, and other final national exam results—must be submitted if they are required to complete and graduate from secondary school. If they are not required for the completion of and graduation from secondary school, you are not required to submit results.

Please be aware that Columbia Undergraduate Admissions does not authorize or work with any independent agents anywhere in the world for our recruitment efforts.

Students at non-English speaking schools

Any documents within your application file that are not in English, such as transcripts or recommendations, must be officially translated into English and submitted along with the original documents.

Conversational videos

Applicants to Columbia can elect to send InitialView or Vericant videos to emphasize language fluency. These videos should be scheduled, completed and submitted to Columbia by November 15 for Early Decision, January 15 for Regular Decision or March 1 for Transfer applicants.

English language proficiency requirement

To be considered for admission to Columbia, you must be comfortable with rapid and idiomatic spoken English. Please review our English Proficiency Requirements for more detail.

International transfer students

Columbia welcomes applications from international transfer students. In order to be eligible to apply as a transfer, you must be enrolled in a college in North America or in a US-style college abroad . A college or university is considered "US-style" if:

  • courses are offered term by term (quarters, semesters, etc)
  • a grade is given for each course in each term
  • your college/university can provide an English-language transcript showing those courses and those grades

Post-secondary work can be considered for possible transfer credit after you are admitted to Columbia and accept our offer.

You must fulfill our English Language Proficiency requirements , in addition to the Transfer Admission requirements to apply for transfer admission.

To apply from abroad if your college is not US-style as defined above, you must apply as a first-year student only in your first year of study. If you have begun your second year of study or beyond, you are no longer eligible to apply to Columbia as an undergraduate.
