16 College Memes Every Student Will Recognize

ith just a couple weeks left in the semester the stress is overwhelming. If you feel the end semester crunch weighing down on you just take a deep breath, and relax. 2020 has been a hectic year going through a pandemic and switching to online course work for a lot of it has been overwhelming. Treat yourself to a little meme break. If you’re worried about getting lost in the vast social media void don’t worry a prepared list of highly relatable memes to follow will help keep your daily schedule on track.

When you low key miss how easy high school was

college assignment memes

It was 7 hours, numerous clubs, working on the weekend, and  maintaining an active social life was nearly a breeze compared to the harsh realities of uni life. Instead of getting up, showering, dressing, and eating breakfast all students generally have to do to get to class is join their lecture zoom and it’s still a struggle.

Knowing that your L’s is inevitable

college assignment memes

It's like that sometimes especially when you’re at the end of the semester. When you are rushing to get assignments done they can’t all be a quality A work. All you can do is cross your fingers, hope for the best, and take the grades as they come to you. If you get caught up on every little thing you will greatly hindered on your ability to complete assignments.

When professors pretend to understand

college assignment memes

Even though it’s an unprecedented time in academic history some professors really don’t bat an eye to accommodate things such as: the pandemic stress, the many hurdles over online learning, the fact that a lot of students are home which means they might have more responsibilities than they would on campus, students are still working, and the still lingering election tensions. Why would they change their lesson plan to accommodate any one of these things? Not to bash all professors and teachers because some do get it, but not everyone is fortunate enough to have a few in their lives.

When it doesn’t just stop at the freshman 15

college assignment memes

Students are warned of the famous weight gain of moving out on their own on campus, supposedly it is about 15 lbs, but that will truly vary from person to person. However, sometimes the pounds just keep coming on. Believe it or not the student life diet isn’t known for its general nutrition. Especially, now when people are facing quarantine pounds as well for a variety of reasons-such as whether or not they can access their gym, or whether or not they are healthy enough to risk going out to the gym.

The coming home culture shock

college assignment memes

Campus life is often like the wild west; almost anything goes. Well as long as it doesn't break your campus rules, of course, or as long as you don’t get caught, but you didn’t hear that from us. If you want to roll up in class wearing PJ’s and funny hats, cool. If you’re skipping lectures to spend all day doing school work and some light drinking, neat. If you wanna go out and get 2 am Taco Bell, more power to you.

The new found freedom of being off your own boss knows very few bounds, and has little required structure. Alas whenever you come home the harsh reality of a more rigid social structure comes back into play, especially when you have strict parents. Then you basically have to adjust to societal norms.

Trying to teach yourself the entire class

college assignment memes

Cumulative finals are the natural enemy of the college student. These two forces have been clashing against each other since the dawn of cumulative finals in academia. See even if you have been studying and nailing each exam once you take that exam and start a new section the old info tends to be replaced with the new section’s info. This is a somewhat vicious cycle that occurs throughout the semester so come finals time you barely remember what you covered in the first chapter. So then you end up sitting down and basically teaching yourself the class all over again in spite of how futile these efforts feel.

Finishing your essay slightly before the 11:59 deadline

college assignment memes

This college meme perfectly showcases what it is like finishing any term paper ever. Whether you’ve spent the quality time of putting your heart and soul ahead of time or if it was a rush job in which you wrung out every bit of knowledge in your head to write, this is generally how it feels. The stress wears on you either way, but you are merely just excited that the whole ordeal is over with.

The rare occasion studying actually pays off

college assignment memes

Another meme-able college experience for when the hard work does actually pay off or the last minute cram you did the morning of. Both are equally valid because as mentioned earlier it be like that sometimes. The most important part is the student is thriving and taking the W where they can get it. Besides shouldn’t we celebrate the few “Ayeeee” moments that academia allows?

The illusion of clarity when writing an essay last minute

college assignment memes

This college meme really shows that the first draft really shouldn’t be last, but time is not always a luxury. Just like your ability to edit increases right after you hit submit. Funny how that situation works itself out, but a vaguely coherent train of thought will still help you get a degree.

How every semester will age you

college assignment memes

Another great rendition of this college meme is the picture of Rose from titanic saying “It’s been  84 years”  about the college semester. Time doesn’t fly when you’re not having fun. Not that uni isn’t fun, but there is definitely a lot of stress that goes into you. At the end of every semester students can feel like they’ve lived a whole other lifetime and even become this radically different person sometimes.

The silence that thickens the metaphorical zoom room air.

college assignment memes

This college meme is topical now more than ever. In face to face you can lock eyes with a student and call on them or insinuate they should answer at least. In a virtual class setting this becomes quite a bit harder, especially when students tend to feel less pressure/not as obligated to answer virtually. Something about that in person touch gives you that extra push, possibly because of the same eye contact issue.

When the semester as always gets to be too much

college assignment memes

Pointless, tireless, and seemingly never ending. This college meme emphasizes what happens every semester at some point you just get fed up, and it generally will stay that way for the rest of the semester. Not to mention that this year has all of the “fun,” bonuses of the COVID-19 breakout, a suspenseful election year, and a majority of students being mass sent to online courses regardless of how equipped schools and professors can handle it. This semester is certainly a recipe for a perfect storm.

That moment when you feel like you aren’t getting your money's worth

college assignment memes

This meme, unfortunately, is all too often the case with some university classes. As mentioned before a lot of professors weren’t and still are not well equipped to teach lecture while social distancing. Oftentimes they tend  to revert back to this simple lecture format of reading off of a powerpoint, which is not always the best format to learn on. Hopefully, your college gave you a bit of a tuition break this time around since a lot of the school services aren’t available as they normally would be.

Student led tours to freshmen

college assignment memes

Ah, yes the campus tours. This college meme is really the best representation of school tours, because you really only need a few go to places on campus:

  • Food spots- where to get the best eats.
  • Places to nap- because going all the way back to your dorm sleep isn’t always feasible.
  • Study hangouts- where is a good place to get your school grind going or even just a good place to gather up friends to hang out with.
  • Places to be alone- i.e. places to cry, freak out, and anything else you might not want your roomie to see/hear.

Life hacks in a college meme

college assignment memes

The work around for not citing wikipedia. If you didn’t know, now you know. The passage down of the ancient time honored traditions will now live on. If you already had this big brain play locked and ready to go, hopefully you still got a good laugh out of this college meme.

When classes are almost never canceled despite weather conditions

college assignment memes

The harsh reality of “weather permitting” means basically unless you’re snowed in you’re going to class. If anyone out there is feeling the #CommuterStruggle of explaining to professors you’re not risking your life driving to campus for class this one's for you.

Hopefully, now that you’ve enjoyed a healthy number of quality meme content you feel more relaxed and ready to tackle your school work. Remember it’s one assignment of the time prioritized by deadlines, alright?

Creating and Using Memes in Your Classroom

Who would have thought that memes—those images, videos, and pieces of text that are copied, often modified, and spread via internet—have roots in ancient Greek? The term ‘meme’ was introduced in 1976 by British evolutionary biologist Richard Dawkins, in his work The Selfish Gene, and it comes from the Greek mimema , meaning ‘imitated.’ 1

Today, memes are a vehicle used to express commentary on a phenomenon or a relatable event. They’re typically shared on social media to capture attention or get a laugh. As numerous blog posts reflect, educators are using them in class and, in the case of Sharon Serano, receiving them in good fun from family members. As Sharon prepped lesson plans one night, her 14-year-old son made this meme for her:

when-mrs-serano-gives-more-homework

Sharon is one of many educators who have found that memes can be effective teaching tools, whether they’re created for students or by them. 2 Read on to explore ways to create and use classroom memes.

Meme Creation

A basic meme shows an image and text; more involved ones include animation, audio, or video. These elements can be original, duplicated, or modified. Many meme elements are based on or lifted from culturally familiar sources, such as Sharon Serano’s Star Trek: The Next Generation -inspired gift from her son.

The internet is replete with meme-creation tools, including apps that your students may already have on their phones. Most are free, but some charge small fees and some allow users access to adult content, so choose carefully before assigning creation tasks.

Each creation tool walks you through a few simple meme-making steps. Every site is unique, but the typical steps are these:

  • Choose your meme’s size and orientation (portrait or landscape).
  • Choose from preset templates and icons or design your own from scratch.
  • Choose or upload the images, photos, and/or artwork you’d like to include.
  • Add your text, choosing the text font you prefer.
  • Customize the background and color scheme as you like.
  • Save your work! Download and save it as a PNG, JPG, or GIF file.
  • Always share—via email, text message, social media, or through your classroom file-sharing system.

Memes for Students

Memes quickly communicate information on any subject—often with humor, which can make the shared facts more memorable. Consider this excerpt from The Lord of the Rings …

one does not simply walk into mordor

… adapted to reinforce a class rule:

one does not simply come to my class late without a pass

Beyoncé can help you get a point across …

if ya wanted a grade, ya shoulda put ya name on it

… as can a baby’s photo:

did you really just ask if you have to write in complete sentences?

Think of educational messages you can deliver in this concise, humorous way:

alot is not a word. stop writing alot.

Memes by Students

A quick internet search will yield countless school-related memes, including many submitted as homework assignments. Before issuing a meme-creation assignment, teach a lesson on memes. Go over their key elements and offer some common examples. Most of your students are familiar with them, but your introduction will help level the playing field for your class.

Activities and learning objectives will vary by class, subject, and grade level, of course. As an example, consider the specifics of a meme project that challenged students to demonstrate their understanding of irony: 3

Object Use this activity for a unit learning about irony through a given novel—in this case, William Golding’s Lord of the Flies . Faculty sought a creative assessment tool that a) differed from previous assessment tools, and b) would be enjoyable for the students to use.

Tasks In addition to creating a meme, students were expected to include a supporting paragraph detailing the type of irony the meme conveyed and explaining why they chose the image that they did. In writing this paragraph, they practiced their writing and grammar skills.

Pedagogy To create this product and an effective message within it, students had to choose imagery and text carefully. Doing so using an online tool demonstrated their knowledge of technology and technological content .

As memes tend to include very few words, a meme that successfully conveys a message must use strong, highly descriptive language. Students were called upon to think critically about their word choices, which supports word study and improves vocabularies.

Inclusion Meme creation uses but does not require a computer and internet access. Options for this activity enabled learners with varied degrees of technological access to complete it.

  • Students could draw their memes by hand, keeping in mind the elements of a meme and ensuring that their final product contained them
  • If students had access to a computer but not to the internet, they could use a program such as Microsoft Paint or PowerPoint to create a meme

Evidence of Learning Outcomes Faculty assessed the students’ memes based on the level of sophistication in their use of irony and its connection to Lord of the Flies .

The supporting paragraph helped faculty assess:

  • Comprehension of the type of irony chosen
  • Written communication skill regarding the rationale for each selected image

Response Students were extremely motivated to come up with creative ideas for their memes and complete the assignment because it incorporated a type of social media that they were used to seeing outside of the classroom.

“I was shocked and impressed at how keen and willing the students were to complete this assignment,” concluded their teacher. “It made me excited to continue to explore new and innovative ways to use technology and relevant social media … to connect with and motivate all students.”

Expand your creativity. Advance your career.

45 Funny And Witty Memes About Literature That Might Inspire You To Open A Book

M any of you probably know SparkNotes from back in your school or college days. You got confused by an assigned book, you were running late for class, or you were writing an essay right before the deadline (again!), and you needed to get to grips with the plot and main themes. SparkNotes is probably the most well-known literature resource in the world, summarizing countless books to help you study alongside the source material.

But something that you probably weren’t aware of is that SparkNotes is ridiculously good at the social media game. It has an account on X (formerly Twitter) that posts some great memes about literature. Our nerdy sides love them so much that we couldn’t help but share some of the best ones with you. Scroll down for a refresher about why literature is so awesome and why being geeky is cool!

Bored Panda got in touch with the member of the SparkNotes team running its X account, Courtney Gorter, and she was kind enough to tell us about literary memes and reigniting people’s passion for reading. Meanwhile, we also reached out to Lisa McLendon, Ph.D. , from the University of Kansas, who is the William Allen White Professor of Journalism and Mass Communications, as well as the Coordinator at the Bremner Editing Center . She told us about truly great student essays. Read on for both of our interviews.

Gorter, an Associate Content Strategy Manager at SparkNotes, explained to Bored Panda that the secret behind creating such great literary memes comes from reading a ton and spending a lot of time on X (aka Twitter).

We were curious to get her opinion on what quality literary memes have in common. “To me, a sign of a good literary meme is that people who have read the book think it’s spot-on, and people who haven’t read the book are curious enough that they decide to read it!” she said.

Some people feel like they don’t have enough spare time to read. Others, however, are dealing with extremely shortened attention spans , a huge problem these days. Gorter shared her thoughts about inspiring people to read more.

“For people who are looking to reignite their passion for literature, sometimes it’s all in how you think about it. Get rid of the idea that audiobooks don’t count; give yourself permission to stop reading a book you’re not enjoying; read several books at once if you get bored easily,” the SparkNotes team member told Bored Panda.

“I know so many people who got back into reading after a long dry spell, and the reason they came back is always different—maybe they discovered ebooks or audiobooks and it changed everything, or maybe they watched a TV or film adaptation, and wanted to read the series, or maybe (just maybe!) they saw a literary meme on Twitter that piqued their interest.”

According to Gorter, the best approach here is to meet people “where they are,” instead of forcing them or moralizing them.

“Some people are never going to be big readers, either because they don’t have time or it simply doesn’t interest them, and I think that’s okay! The great thing about literature is that it’s such a vast world, and there’s no right or wrong way to engage with it.”

Meanwhile, Professor McLendon , from the University of Kansas, echoed very similar thoughts on helping people (re)discover the love of reading.

“I’d love to see people reading more books: novels, nonfiction, whatever. I think one thing that could help, and this is something I’m encouraging my students to do over the winter break, is just read something YOU want to read for the fun of it,” she shared her thoughts with Bored Panda.

“By college, it seems that students tend to associate reading with homework, not pleasure, and if they can re-capture the feeling of reading for pleasure, then they may read more. Going along with that, people need to know it’s OK, when they’re reading for pleasure, to quit a book that they’re not into. There are so many great books in the world; don’t waste time on one you’re not enjoying!”

We also asked the professor for her thoughts on truly great student essays and how they can wow academic staff.

“Truly great student essays don’t just follow the directions (though they do that); they sparkle in both content and writing. That is, great essays approach the topic from an inventive or creative perspective and support the main idea with clear, specific information and examples,” McLendon said.

“Great essays are written in concise, direct prose with a mix of sentence types and lengths to keep readers engaged, and they transition clearly from one point to the next. To achieve greatness, students need to think, then plan, then write, then revise,” she shared.

“It’s a process that most people can’t successfully complete the night before an assignment is due, and if a writer skimps on the ‘think’ stage—by, for example, using SparkNotes instead of reading the original and thinking through it—chances are the essay won’t be great,” the professor added that reading just a summary, in isolation, isn’t enough.

SparkNotes was initially launched way back in 1999 and has, over the years, become a household name. Meanwhile, the project launched its account on X (when it was still called Twitter, which most of us probably prefer) in April 2008.

The project has an extensive presence on social media. At the time of writing, SparkNotes had nearly 352k followers on X and 295k fans on Facebook. It also has 310k literature-hungry folks following it on Instagram and nearly 77k fans over on TikTok. All the more ways to spread funny and geeky literary memes!

Full disclosure: literature may have been (read: definitely was ) our favorite class of all time, so these memes are right up our alley.

Whatever you might have used SparkNotes summaries for in the past, the company itself points out that it stands firmly against cheating and plagiarism. While there’s nothing new under the sun, it’s important to be open about where you got your ideas from. Citing sources and crediting ideas—these are fundamental values whether you’re in a literature class or doing a degree in journalism.

“We're here to help you learn, not to help you cheat. Our literature guides are meant to be read along with the books they analyze. They are not intended to be copied on tests or papers (aka plagiarized),” SparkNotes explains its stance on people copying their summaries directly on the project’s website.

SparkNotes points out that you can avoid plagiarizing them by citing the words and ideas that came from their site or books. You can also rephrase these ideas in your own words, interpreting things from your own perspective.

Transparency, clarity, and honesty are worth more than their weight in gold when it comes to literature, journalism, historical analyses, and writing (endless) essays.

The point is to use what SparkNotes offers as a supplement, not an alternative to reading the source material itself. We all need a little help understanding exactly what’s going on in a book sometimes when we’re “confuzzled.”

There’s no shame in asking someone for advice… or doing lots of Googling to check if we’re not alone in being lost.

SparkNotes offers over 500 guides for English literature and Shakespeare, as well as many other guides for other subjects, including history, math, and biology.

They also have a whole bunch of quizzes to help you learn the info that you need way better before that big test. They have a vested interest in helping everyone learn in a more efficient way.

Memes are, essentially, ideas, attitudes, jokes, and images that we share with other people. So the more something is shared, the more successful it is at being a meme, by definition.

In our experience, there are a few main things that elevate a meme from something ‘meh’ to a viral sensation. It all comes down to relatability, humor, format, and consistency.

Something that the SparkNotes team members in charge of creating and sharing all of these memes do so well is that they know their audience. It’s people who enjoy literature, reading, and books in general.

Naturally, they then focus on crafting memes that suit this particular audience. They make it relatable for lit geeks. But someone who’s not into literature may feel a lot of the references going over their head. But that's all right. Aside from dad jokes, there are very few categories of comedy that try to appeal to absolutely everyone.

Another aspect that the SparkNotes X account nails completely is adding copious amounts of humor to their posts. Memes do not have to be funny to be relatable or to go viral… but comedy certainly helps. When an image makes you feel good, you want to share it with the people you care about to make them feel the same way that you do.

In terms of format, you want your meme to be easy to read. We’re all overloaded with pics, memes, posts, and news stories on social media, so images only have a mere moment to grab our attention. If there’s way too much text or the font’s hard to understand, internet users might just decide to skip reading the thing altogether.

Meanwhile, if you plan on entertaining your followers with memes, it’s a good idea to be consistent with your posting. It doesn’t mean that you have to spam your feed with dozens of memes each day, though. But it means carving out a reputation as someone who’s consistent and trustworthy in their posting schedule.

We would love to learn a bit about your literary habits, Pandas, so scroll down to the comment section and share your thoughts. How much time do you find to read every week? What did you enjoy the most about lit classes back in school and college? Have you ever used SparkNotes before? Which gothic horror books are your faves?! Let us know!

Kansas City Chiefs player Harrison Butker, pictured at a press conference in February, is in hot water for his recent commencement speech at Benedictine College in Kansas.

Kansas City Chiefs kicker Harrison Butker stirred controversy off the field this weekend when he told a college graduating class that one of the "most important titles" a woman can hold is "homemaker."

Butker denounced abortion rights, Pride Month, COVID-19 lockdowns and "the tyranny of diversity, equity and inclusion" in his commencement address at Benedictine College, a Catholic liberal arts school in Atchison, Kan.

The 28-year-old, a devout Catholic and father of two, also railed against "dangerous gender ideologies" and urged men to "fight against the cultural emasculation of men." At one point, he addressed women specifically.

Black Stories. Black Truths.

"I want to speak directly to you briefly because I think it is you, the women, who have had the most diabolical lies told to you, how many of you are sitting here now about to cross the stage, and are thinking about all the promotions and titles you're going to get in your career," he said. "Some of you may go on to lead successful careers in the world. But I would venture to guess that the majority of you are most excited about your marriage and the children you will bring into this world."

"I can tell you that my beautiful wife Isabelle would be the first to say that her life truly started when she began living her vocation as a wife and as a mother," Butker said.

The 20-minute speech has been viewed more than 455,000 times on YouTube since Saturday and generated considerable backlash — and memes — on social media, especially from people critical of his views on women. Many pointed out that Butker's own mom is a clinical medical physicist.

Butker also drew ire from fans of Taylor Swift, who is dating fellow Chiefs player Travis Kelce, a relationship that has famously helped bring many new female fans to the NFL. Later in the speech, he quoted Swift — though not by name — while talking about what he sees as the problem of priests becoming "overly familiar" with their parishioners.

The Swift-Kelce romance sounds like a movie. But the NFL swears it wasn't scripted

Super Bowl 2024

The swift-kelce romance sounds like a movie. but the nfl swears it wasn't scripted.

"This undue familiarity will prove to be problematic every time, because as my teammate's girlfriend says, 'Familiarity breeds contempt,' " he said, quoting a lyric from her song Bejeweled.

One Swift fan account joked about petitioning for the pop star to replace Butker as the Chiefs' kicker. A real online petition , calling for the Chiefs to dismiss Butker for his "sexist, homophobic, anti-trans, anti-abortion and racist remarks," has gained 95,000 signatures and counting since Monday.

Butker and the team have not commented publicly on his speech and the backlash to it, though late Wednesday the NFL issued a statement distancing itself from it.

"Harrison Butker gave a speech in his personal capacity," Jonathan Beane, the NFL's senior VP and chief diversity and inclusion officer told NPR on Thursday. "His views are not those of the NFL as an organization."

What else did Butker say?

Butker has been vocal about his faith, telling the Eternal Word Television Network in 2019 that he grew up Catholic but practiced less in high school and college before rediscovering his belief later in life.

Last year, Butker appeared in an ad for the nonprofit Catholic Vote urging Kansans to support a referendum that would limit abortion rights in the state (it was ultimately unsuccessful ). He's also one of several athletes who has partnered with a Catholic prayer app . And days after the Chiefs won this year's Super Bowl, Butker spent a week "in reflection" at a monastery in California.

He also gave the commencement address at his alma mater Georgia Tech last year, in which he urged students to "get married and start a family."

This time around, Butker started his speech by suggesting he had been reluctant to give it: He said he originally turned down the president's invitation because he felt that one commencement speech was enough, "especially for someone who isn't a professional speaker."

He was persuaded, he said, in part by leadership's argument about how many milestones graduating seniors had missed because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

"As a group, you witnessed firsthand how bad leaders who don't stay in their lane can have a negative impact on society," he said in his opening remarks. "It is through this lens that I want to take stock of how we got to where we are and where we want to go as citizens, and yes, as Catholics."

He criticized President Biden for his handling of the pandemic and his stance on abortion, which he said falsely suggests people can simultaneously be "both Catholic and pro-choice."

Butker blamed "the pervasiveness of disorder" for the availability of procedures like abortion, IVF, surrogacy and euthanasia, as well as "a growing support for degenerate cultural values and media."

At one point, he referenced an Associated Press article from earlier this month about the revival of conservative Catholicism that prominently featured Benedictine College as an example.

The school of roughly 2,000 gets top ratings from the Cardinal Newman Society , a nonprofit that promotes Catholic education in the U.S., for policies including offering daily mass and prohibiting campus speakers who "publicly oppose Catholic moral teaching."

"I am certain the reporters at the AP could not have imagined that their attempt to rebuke and embarrass places and people like those here at Benedictine wouldn't be met with anger, but instead with excitement and pride," Butker said, before making an apparent reference to LGBTQ Pride Month in June.

"Not the deadly sin sort of pride that has an entire month dedicated to it," he said, as laughter could be heard from the crowd.

How are people responding?

The official YouTube video of Butker's speech shows the crowd standing and applauding at the end, though the AP reports that reactions among graduates were mixed. Several told the outlet they were surprised by his comments about women, priests and LGTBQ people.

Kassidy Neuner told the AP that the speech felt "degrading," suggesting that only women can be homemakers.

"To point this out specifically that that's what we're looking forward to in life seems like our four years of hard work wasn't really important," said Neuner, who is planning on attending law school.

Butker's comments have gotten some support, including on social media from football fan accounts and Christian and conservative media personalities .

"Christian men should be preaching this regularly," tweeted former NFL player T.J. Moe. "Instead, it's so taboo that when someone tells the obvious truth that anyone who holds a biblical worldview believes, it's national news."

Still, other public figures — including musicians Maren Morris and Flava Flav — were quick to disagree.

Even the official Kansas City account weighed in, tweeting on Wednesday that Butker resides not there but in a neighboring suburb, Lee's Summit. The tweet has since been deleted and the account apologized for the tweet .

Kansas City Mayor Quinton Lucas tweeted that he believed Butker holds a "minority viewpoint" in the state but defended his right to express it.

"Grown folks have opinions, even if they play sports," he wrote . "I disagree with many, but I recognize our right to different views."

Justice Horn, the former chair of Kansas City's LGBTQ Commission, was more critical, writing on X (formerly Twitter) that "Harrison Butker doesn't represent Kansas City nor has he ever." He called the city one that "welcomes, affirms and embraces our LGBTQ+ community members."

The Los Angeles Chargers also trolled Butker in its Sims-style schedule release video on Wednesday, which ends with a shot of his animated, number 7 jersey-wearing character cooking and arranging flowers in a kitchen.

Harrison Butker Said His Benedictine College Commencement Speech Taken 'Out of Context'?

According to online posts, butker supposedly clarified in a statement, "all i said is that we should go back to a better time, like the 50s and 60s.", jordan liles, published may 16, 2024.

Originated as Satire

About this rating

On May 16, 2024, numerous users on Facebook , TikTok and X reposted a quote meme featuring a purported statement from Kansas City Chiefs kicker and 3-time Super Bowl champion Harrison Butker. The statement supposedly constituted Butker's response to some backlash following his May 11 commencement speech at Kansas' Benedictine College, a private Catholic liberal arts school.

In one post  on X displayed to over 1 million users, the viral quote meme showing a photo of Butker read, "Everyone is taking what I said out of context. All I said is that we should go back to a better time, like the 50s and 60s. When men were men, and women had more babies than thoughts. When the only 'Me too' movement was one woman saying she was ready for her 4th child, and another woman agreeing." The end of the meme added Butker's name with the words "on setting the record straight."

A fake quote meme claimed Harrison Butker said the words everyone is taking what I said out of context and added all I said is that we should go back to a better time like the 50s and 60s.

A TikTok video promoting the quote meme as genuine also received more than 800,000 views within five hours of being uploaded, making it another one of the more prominent reposts.

However, Butker did not release a statement with these words, nor did he appear to publicly release any statements following his speech. A closer look at the quote meme reveals a watermark for "@TheSportsMemery" — a reference to the Facebook page named The Sports Memery. The Facebook page's description describes its output as containing satire and parody.

The Associated Press reported Butker's speech featured some remarks on the subjects of women and motherhood, Pride month, in vitro fertilization (IVF) and President Joe Biden's policies regarding abortion and the COVID-19 pandemic, among others.

Readers looking to watch Butker's address in its original form can find the full, unedited speech in a  video  posted on the Benedictine College YouTube channel. The video ends with many of the people in attendance giving Butker a standing ovation.

The National Catholic Register also published a complete transcript of the address.

Texas' women's basketball SEC schedule includes South Carolina twice, Kim Mulkey in Austin

college assignment memes

For a while now, Texas' women's basketball team has known it will be playing in the Southeastern Conference starting in 2024. Now the Longhorns know where they'll be playing their new SEC foes.

The SEC announced all home and road designations for this upcoming season's league games Tuesday. Texas joins the conference this summer after spending the past 27 seasons in the Big 12 . Dates, times and television information for games will be announced later.

The SEC will have 16 teams. Texas is set to play every other conference team at least once. Defending national champion South Carolina is the only team the Longhorns will play both at home and on the road.

In addition to South Carolina, Texas will play Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, LSU, Missouri, Tennessee and Vanderbilt in Austin at Moody Center. Texas and Tennessee have a long history together, but the two programs last met in 2021. LSU is notably led by Kim Mulkey, who previously clashed with the Longhorns while she was coaching in the Big 12 at Baylor from 2000-21.

Texas will travel to Auburn, Georgia, Kentucky, Ole Miss, Mississippi State, Texas A&M and fellow SEC newcomer Oklahoma. The Mississippi State and A&M trips will be homecomings for UT coach Vic Schaefer, who led the Mississippi State program from 2012-20 and won a national championship while working on A&M's coaching staff in 2011.

During the 2024-25 season, UT will also reunite with ex-leading scorer Aliyah Matharu when Florida comes to town and all-conference forward DeYona Gaston when it heads to Auburn . The Alabama-Texas showdown at Moody Center will be a rematch of an NCAA tournament game that took place at the same location this past March .

An Elite Eight team this past season, Texas has not yet finalized the nonconference schedule. Schaefer recently told the American-Statesman that UT will open the season against Michigan in Las Vegas and that a road trip to DePaul has been planned.

Texas announced earlier this week that season tickets are now on sale.
