What is a place value in maths?
Place value helps us identify the worth of each digit. We use it to understand if the value or worth of a digit is thousands, hundreds, tens or ones.
For instance , in 5426 the “5” is 5000, “4” is 400, “2” is 200 and “6” is ones.
What do children need to know about Place value in Year 1?
According to the national curriculum, Year 1 children are expected to:
- Count and read numbers from 0 to 100.
- More than, less than and equals to
- Count in 2s, 5s and 10s
- Identify and represent numbers using objects and pictorial representations like numbers line, ten frames and base 10 blocks.
How to use these Place Value worksheets with your children?
Our amazing place value worksheets are great for teaching children the most important concept of maths and that is Place value. Place value is a basis for our entire number system. As children start to learn from counting objects they gradually move to tougher concepts of maths.

Fun classroom activities to teach place value:
- Claps and Clicks: The teacher writes a two-digit number on the board. The child has to say the number by clapping for tens and clicking for ones. For example, the number is 36. The child has to clap 3 times and clicks 6 times.
- Roll and Collect: Put children in pairs. Give each pair a dice, as they roll a number they collect it with base ten blocks. When they have enough ones they exchange them for a ten. They also keep a scoreboard by writing how many they have after each turn. Set them a target number, the first one to reach it is the winner.
- Number Bump: Give pair of children an empty number line or grid. Child one writes 1 then bumps it to partner to write next number 2 keep going till reach they reach 20.

Get a simple definition of the concept of number and the difference between cardinal, ordinal and nominal numbers with this fun animation.
Your child needs to know why, how, and when to count.
Activity: Three Little Frogs rhyme
Counting objects around the house is also a good way to make sure your child understands that each number name can represent an amount. Try counting in steps. For example, you could count pairs of socks in twos, use your fingers to count in fives, or count 10p coins in tens.
3. Make representations of numbers
It is important that your child understands what numbers look like, so it is helpful to represent numbers using objects and pictures.
For example, to understand the number 3, children need to understand what 3 really is. We can represent it using the symbol, 3, but it is important to understand what three looks like as a quantity. You could count out three sticks or draw three pictures to help with this.
Your child also needs to understand that numbers can be made up of other numbers. So three can be made of three ones, or a two and a one. Once they reach the teen numbers, we need to show that these are numbers made from one ten, plus several ones. For example, fifteen is made of one ten and five ones. Again, this is much easier to explain to your child using objects or pictures.

Definition of Place Value
So what exactly is place value?
Place value refers to the value of the digits in any given number. In the number 482 for example, the value of the digit '8' is 80 and the value of the digit '4' is 400.
At a more advanced level, in the number 36.57, the value of the digit '5' is 0.5 and the value of the digit '7' is 0.07.
In our number system, each time you move a place to the right, the value of the digit gets ten times bigger. Each time you move a place to the left, the value of the digit gets ten times smaller.

Place Value Learning
Children start their learning journey in Math when they start to count. When they are confindent counting small groups of objects and getting beyond 10, they then begin to develop their understanding of place value up to 100 and beyond.
When they have understood how place value with whole numbers works, they can start learning about place value with decimals.
Our selection of free math place value worksheets has been split into different areas below so that you can more easily find the right sheet for your child.
Online Place Value Practice Zone
In our Math Place Value Practice area, you can practice your place value skills, adding thousands, hundreds, tens and ones. You can even use this area for adding on decimals: tenths and hundredths.
You can select the numbers you want to practice with, and print out your results when you have finished.
You can also use the practice zone for benchmarking your performance, or using it with a group of children to gauge progress.

Hamilton’s problem-solving investigations are 'low floor, high ceiling' activities that give all children opportunities to develop mastery and mathematical meta-skills. Explore a set for a whole year group.
Extra Support worksheets come with guidance for a teacher or TA working with small groups. They can make a significant difference to children working below ARE. Extra support is linked to individual objectives-based units, but you can also explore a set for a whole year.
Procedural fluency is fundamental to numeracy, and Hamilton's practice worksheets are carefully differentiated for children working toward Age Related Expectations (ARE), at ARE and at greater depth. Practice is linked to individual objectives-based units, but you can also explore sets of worksheets for the whole year.
