Honey bees are small insects which live in grasslands, forests and gardens. They live in a hive which they build together as a family. We get the nutritious and delicious honey from bees. The big family of honey bee is called a colony.

Every beehive has almost four thousand honey bees!!! All of them are divided to do different tasks. Some bees are builders, who build the hive, some go out to bring honey, they are called drone bees, some bees take care of the eggs that the queen bee lays.

There is only one queen bee in a hive. Her only job is to lay eggs. Every bee has a different body type and in this way, every worker bee, or queen bee or drone bee can be identified.

Bees like to eat flower pollen and the sweet nectar of the flowers. They collect this nectar in their beehive and make honey from it. This honey-filled home of the bee is called a honeycomb. Because bees are very small in size, many animals hunt them. But bees have signals by which they warn other bees about the upcoming danger. These signals also make them look like they are dancing. They also do a different bee dance when they inform other bees about food.

Bears are infamous for eating honey from honeycombs. Beekeepers are also called Honey farmer. They rear the bees for the production of honey.

Bees are small but they play a big role in the ecosystem. They play an important role as a pollinator for crops. It is vital for food security of human beings. Hence we must control our activities and help protect honey bees.

Honey bees are generally held in high regards in humans despite of their painful sting. This is due to their usefulness as honey producers and the best pollinators for flowering plants. The value of pollination in plants is incalculable. A majority of crops are dependent on pollination by honey bees and other insects. Domestic animals that provide us meat and milk eat the pollinated plants which are dependent on pollination. Thanks to honeybees and other insects to work hard for us.

There are approximately 20,000 known species of bees in nine recognized families. The actual number may be higher as many are undescribed yet. You can found bees all over the globe except Antarctica. They are at every place where insect-pollinated plants are present. They are the most useful day-flying insect.

Why Do Bees Sting?

Bees are mainly busy creature and they love to do their work. They have no interest in stinging all the time. They only sting when someone bothers them or their nest. All of their species are non-aggressive if undisturbed. Many of them have no sting at all. But if any animal or human bothers then they team up and fight together to protect their nest. It is significant to know that a honeybee rarely stings. The reason is that when a honeybee stings, its barbed stinger is torn away and the honeybee dies within a short period. Other bees and wasps, which have stings that are not barbed, retain their stingers to sting again. A bee stinger is usually inside its abdomen. When the bee is ready to sting, the stinger comes out of its tail.

Honeybees Talk to Each other by Dancing

Believe it or not but when a bee finds nectar-rich flowers, it returns to its hive and informs the rest of the bees in the hive by dancing. There is a special dance to let the others know about where the flowers are. For nearby flowers (within 90 m or 300 feet) the bee does a simple, circular dance. For flowers that are far away, the dance is a figure-eight pattern. It gives the other bees a good idea of where to go for finding the nectar. The angle between the centre line of the figure-eight pattern and the top of the hive, which stands for the position of the sun, indicates the path of the flowers.

You should not afraid of honeybees; they are cute friends who always work to prepare sweet honey for your breakfast. Thank them for the beeswax as well. Pollination is far more important than honey or beeswax for a healthy and working world. Try to imagine a world without pollination and then without plants and then without us … isn’t it too horrible to think about.

The process of making honey, works cited.

Bees live on honey. This is food for the insects and we all agree that honey is sweet; but the question is, how is honey made? Honey is a sweet substance that is derived by bees from nectar. Nectar is a liquid substance found in flowering plants, it contains 20% complex sugar and 80% water. Other than the sugar, there are minerals, organic acids, vitamins, and pigments aromatic substances in the nectar. Honey is the resultant monosaccharide, fructose, and glucose found in nectar. Human beings use honey as food and so do bees. But what makes the substance so sweet? Which is the process that is followed in making it? This paper analysis the process that bees follow when making honey

The first step in making honey starts from collection of honey. Bees organize themselves in colonies and assign responsibilities to each of them. The bees that collect nectar are called field bees or older working bees. The older working bee has a tongue that is known as proboscis, it resembles a tube, and this is the part that is used in collecting nectar. The proboscis has its root to a special stomach in the bee called the honey stomach. After the nectar has been collected the bee ensures that its honey stomach is full before it goes to the hive. The average mass that a bee honey stomach can hold is 4gms that is approximately half the weight of the insect. To fill the stomach, it requires 50-150 flowers depending on the type of flower and the amount of nectar available (Crane, pp. 12-32).

After the bee has filled its stomach, then it flies back to the hive, during this period, the process of converting the nectar to honey starts, it adds some substances to the nectar called invertases. These are enzymes that break the nectar into more simple sugar compounds; they are mostly broken to glucose (grape sugar) and fructose (fruit sugar). Once in the hive, bees called young working bee’s suck the nectar from the stomach of the old working bees using their proboscis. The sucked nectar is stored in combs.

This is the stage that the houses bees turn the nectar into raw honey; they do this by adding a certain enzyme using their mouth to the honey. The enzymes are in the mouth and are mixed with the nectar to produce what can be referred to as unrefined honey. The process takes about 20 minutes. At this stage the honey has high water content and it is kept in the honey cells by the same bees-house bees. After the honey has been put in the cell, the house bees start the process of evaporating the water content in the raw honey. This is done by fanning their wings. The resultant is a thickened raw honey. This process is called ripening. The ripened honey has about 15%- 20% moisture contents. The water in the form of droplets is removed by the use of mouth sucking.

After the above has been done, then other enzymes are added that are meant to prevent further fermentation and contamination from bacteria. After it has been added and they are sure that the raw honey is well protected, the next house bees make sealing on the top of the cell. The seal is through a thin wax component that is air tight proving. The wax is formed in small sheets found under the abdomen of the bee. When this has been done the honey is said to be completed and left for use.

In cases where there is no nectar freely available in the neighborhood, a certain colony sends a “spy” bee which is a male bee to look for new areas that they will get nectar. When it has found a place with flowering plants, it passes the message to the others in the form of a dance that direct the others to the place where there is nectar (Karlvon, pp. 23-45).

A typical colony can produce 30-50 kgs of honey per year. The bees do not stop making honey until all the cells have been filled. They use it as their food and human being harvest the same food.

Making honey is a process that the bees seem to have mastered. Like any other manufacturing process it is sequential and followed all the way to the end. It starts with gathering of the raw materials in this case nectar, work here is divided according to the expertise that each bee has. There are the field bees which are responsible for collecting of honey and looking for area that plants are flowering for the same task. There are house bees that are left in the hives as they prepare places that the new nectar will be stored as well as protecting the honey that is in the place.

From filling the honeycombs with sweet honey to stinging us if we dare take them, honeybees have always amazed us with their ability to create the best food substance – honey. They belong to the insect order Hymenopterans, which comprises the majority of the insects. Amongst the insect order, bees are considered to be social insects as they live in colonies. Bees are paramount for agriculture as they facilitate pollination, in fact, ⅓ of the world’s food supply pollinated by the bees.

The scientific name of honey bees is ‘Apis’, which is Latin for ‘Bees’. Most of the European honey bees fall under Apis Mellifera ; with ‘Mellifera’ being the Latin word for “honey-bearing”. The process of managing and breeding honey bees for acquiring honey and beeswax is known as apiculture or beekeeping. Apiculture is an old tradition that started with hunters in the forest in search of sweet honey.

Life Cycle of Honeybee

The life cycle of honey bees is divided into four stages: the egg, the larval, the pupal and the adult stage.

Stage 1 – The Egg Stage:

Queen bee is the only bee in the colony who is capable of laying about 2,000 to 3,000 eggs in one day. The egg is positioned upright and falls on the side by the third day. The queen bee lays both fertilized egg and unfertilized egg. The fertilized egg develops into female bees or queen bees. The unfertilized egg hatches and male bees are born; also known as drone bees.

Stage 2 – The Larval Stage:

The difference between a worker and the queen bee is made three days after the egg transforms into larvae and six days after the egg is laid in the beehive. The “royal jelly” is fed to all the larvae, i.e., the female bees, the workers and the drone bees during their initial three days as larvae. The larva sheds skin multiple times throughout this stage. Later, the royal jelly is fed only to the female larvae, which eventually becomes a queen bee. Finally, the worker bees cover the top of the cell with beeswax to protect and facilitate the transformation of the larvae into a pupa.

Stage 3 – The Pupal Stage:

Here the bee has developed parts like wings, eyes, legs and small body hair that physically appears close to an adult bee.

Stage 4 – The Adult Stage:

Once the pupa is matured, the new adult bee chews its way out of the closed-cell. The queen bee takes 16 days from the egg stage to form into an adult. The worker bee takes 18 to 22 days for complete development, and drone bees take 24 days to develop into an adult bee.

Honey bees are the primary reason for the process of pollination . Honey bees have the ability to travel around 20 miles per hour when gone for pollination and around 17 miles per hour while carrying the nectar back to the beehive. Due to this very reason, the entire process of pollination runs faster and more efficiently. Without honey bees exchanging pollen, we would have to wait a long time for one of the sweetest food substances – honey.

How many honey bees can live in a beehive.

The average beehive can take up to 20,000 to 50,000 honey bees. Sometimes, it can go up to 80,000 bees per beehive.

How is the beehive constructed by the bees?

The young worker bees make the beeswax to make the beehive. The beeswax is made through eight paired glands in the abdomen region of the bee. These glands secrete liquid wax which turns hard when exposed to air. The bees keep the wax in their mouths in order to maintain the working condition of the wax which constructs the honeycomb.

What is the amount of honey a beehive can produce in a lifetime?

On average, the honeycomb is capable of producing 50 to 60,000 pounds of honey. Out of which the honey bee requires only 25 per cent of honey and the remaining honey can be utilized by the beekeeper for harvesting.

What is bee bread?

Bees produce food substances for worker bees and larvae in the form of bee bread. When the bee is out there collecting nectar, she also collects some amount of pollen and stores it in her hind legs also known as “pollen baskets”. This accumulation of pollen is brought to the beehive and mixed with the nectar to create the bee bread. Bee bread is stored in beehives and provides proteins for the honey bees.

What is known as the Colony Collapse Disorder?

During 2006, the beekeepers began to notice the disappearance of large bee colonies and this abrupt disappearance of large colonies of bees was called Colony Collapse Disorder (CCD). There are several possible reasons for this disorder like climate change, genetically modified crops, usage of pesticides and even electromagnetic radiation from mobile phones.

Calling all budding – or should we say buzz -ing – young naturalists! Join National Geographic Kids as we get the lowdown on one of our planet’s most fascinating insects in our ten facts about h oney bees !

Facts about honey bees

1.  Honey bees are super-important pollinators for flowers, fruits and vegetables. This means that they help other plants grow! Bees transfer pollen between the male and female parts, allowing plants to grow seeds and fruit.

2.  Honey bees live in hives (or colonies). The members of the hive are divided into three types:

     Queen : One queen runs the whole hive. Her job is to lay the eggs that will spawn the hive’s next generation of bees. The queen also produces chemicals that guide the behaviour of the other bees.

     Workers : these are all female and their roles are to forage for food (pollen and nectar from flowers), build and protect the hive, clean and circulate air by beating their wings. Workers are the only bees most people ever see flying around outside the hive.

     Drones : These are the male bees, and their purpose is to mate with the new queen. Several hundred live in each hive during the spring and summer. But come winter, when the hive goes into survival mode, the drones are kicked out!

3.  What are these buzzing bugs most famous for? Delicious honey ! But did you know they produce honey as food stores for the hive during winter? Luckily for us, these efficient little workers produce 2-3 time more honey than they need, so we get to enjoy the tasty treat, too! 4. If the queen bee dies, workers will create a new queen by selecting a young larva (the newly hatched baby insects) and feeding it a special food called “ royal jelly “. This enables the larva to develop into a fertile queen.

5. Honey bees are fab flyers. They fly at a speed of around  25km per hour and beat their wings 200 times per second !

6. Each bee has 170 odorant receptors , which means they have one serious sense of smell! They use this to communicate within the hive and to recognise different types of flowers when looking for food.

7. The average worker bee lives for just five to six weeks. During this time, she’ll produce around a twelfth of a teaspoon of honey.

8. The queen can live up to five years. She is busiest in the summer months, when she can lay up to 2,500 eggs a day! 

9. Honey bees are also brilliant boogiers! To share information about the best food sources, they perform their ‘ waggle dance ’. When the worker returns to the hive, it moves in a figure-of-eight and waggles its body to indicate the direction of the food source. Cool, huh?

10. Sadly, over the past 15 years, colonies of bees have been disappearing, and the reason remains unknown. Referred to as ‘colony collapse disorder’, billions of honey bees across the world are leaving their hives, never to return. In some regions, up to 90% of bees have disappeared!

We can all do our bit to support these brilliant bugs, gang! Why not  plant flowers rich in nectar, such as lavender and bluebells , which will help bees find the food they need? The reason queen bees are special are because they can control other bees. The queen also produces chemicals that guide the behavior of the other bees. This show using chemicals queen bees can control other bees. To conclude this I think that queen bees are very unique.

The Selfish Tree and Honey Bee Story

There was a forest. It had many beautiful flowers in the spring season. The Queen of bees decided to build a beehive with her fellow bees. As they started collecting nectar, the Mango Tree got upset. He said to his fellow Trees, “They extract nectar from our flower like a thief. Then, they build a nest on us. It is not acceptable. We should stop this.” And, all the other Trees agreed with him. They decided to throw away all the bees.

The Mango Tree was very dense. The Honey Bees thought that their nest would be saved under the shed of it. So, they planned to make a nest over it. After a few hours, the Bees came near the Mango Tree to build a nest. He shook himself and said, “You are not allowed to make a nest over me. I will not entertain you.” Listening to this, the Queen Bee requested to allow them to make a nest. But, the Tree did not give any attention and shook himself again.

It made Honey Bees very sad. So, they thought of the Banyan Tree. But, when they went near the Banyan Tree, it also started swinging. Then, all the Trees said, “You make the unnecessary collection of nectar. We will not allow you to build a nest over any of the Trees of this forest.” Bees started crying and begging for space, but none of the Trees gave them.

The Queen Bee went off from this forest and shifted to another. They made their nest and lived there happily.

One day, a few woodcutters came to the forest. They found the dense Trees. So, they planned to cut them and collect their wood. The monkey saw them and listened to their plan. He immediately informed the bees and requested to help them. The bees came to their forest quickly and attacked woodcutters. All the woodcutters run away from that place.

The Trees took a sigh of relief. They thanked the bees for helping them and saving their lives. The Mango Tree apologised to the Queen of Bees. He also requested them to build nectar over him.

Moral of the Story

We should always help the needy, no matter what they did in the past.

In the end, the bees return to their forest happily. They made a nest over the Mango Tree. Bees are necessary to protect the Trees, and Trees are also equally important to provide shelter to them.
