Agriculture Personal Statement Example

Having had a love of animals for my entire life and feeling that agriculture is returning to the forefront of the public conscience I know whole heartedly that an Agriculture degree is right for me.

The enormous technological advances in agriculture over the last century have made Higher Education essential to the success of the agriculture industry in a society that is relying increasingly on technology for everything from communication to reproduction.

However, I also feel that it is important not to ignore the ‘grassroots’ producer and traditional farming and production methods. This is why I have recently completed a work placement with my local farm. Whilst there I observed and took part in all aspects of animal management with a variety of species including chickens, donkeys, cows, and sheep.

As well as being interested in animal and plant production I also gained valuable business experience by working part-time in my local farm shop and demonstrated my dedication to encouraging local producers by becoming one myself.

Throughout my secondary school and college career I grew my own fruit and vegetables on a community allotment plot and was instrumental in organising a ‘veg patch’ at my school.

Once the ‘veg patch’ was up and running I proposed that the school’s Young Enterprise scheme used the produce to make chutneys, which not only provided a useful learning experience in Food Technology lessons, but also helped to raise much needed funds for more sports equipment when the finished chutney was sold at the school summer fair.

I feel strongly that combining a working knowledge of production with solid business sense is the key to the survival of the future of the agricultural industry. My passion and dedication has pushed me forward and helped me gain the experience, skill set, and talent to become a highly successful Agriculture student.

I hope that the skills I will gain by completing an Agriculture degree will enable me to gain a position with the industry that will allow me to continue to campaign for the importance of the local producer and traditional farming methods.

When starting a personal statement, you would want to right off the bat grab the reader’s attention. To do this, start the statement by writing about your degree of choice, next why you want to study it and then how you got interested in it.

The next 2 sentences after that should cover a summary of your background in the chosen field, and you conclude by saying what you plan to do once you acquire your graduate degree.

Personal Statements

Preparing a well-written and effective personal statement (sometimes referred to as statements of purpose or personal essays) that clearly articulates your preparation, goals, and motivation for pursuing that specific graduate degree is critically important. You will need to spend a considerable amount of time and effort in crafting these statements. The focus, structure, and length of personal statements vary from program to program. Some will have prompts or questions you need to answer, while others will leave the topic open-ended. The length varies widely as well. Read instructions carefully and make sure to adhere to all parameters laid out in the application guidelines.

Clear writing is the result of clear thinking. The first and most important task is to decide on a message. Consider carefully which two or three points you wish to impress upon the reader, remembering that your audience is composed of academics who are experts in their fields. Your statement should show that you are able to think logically and express your thoughts in a clear and concise manner. Remember that the reader already has a record of your activities and your transcript; avoid simply restating your resume and transcript. Writing your statement will take time; start early and give yourself more than enough time for revisions. • What experiences and academic preparation do you have that are relevant to the degree you’re seeking?
• Why are you choosing to pursue a graduate degree at this time?
• Why do you want to pursue this particular degree and how will this degree and the specific program fit into your career plans and your long-term goals?
• What specific topics are you aiming to explore and what does the current literature say about those topics?

After you’ve written a first draft, start the work of editing, refining, simplifying, and polishing. Provide specific examples that will help illustrate your points and convey your interests, intentions, and motivations. Is any section, sentence, or word superfluous, ambiguous, apologetic, or awkward? Are your verbs strong and active? Have you removed most of the qualifiers? Are you sure that each activity or interest you mention supports one of your main ideas? Spelling and grammatical errors are inexcusable. Don’t rely on spell-check to catch all errors; read your statement aloud and have it reviewed by multiple people whose opinion you trust. If possible, have your statement reviewed by a writing tutor. Writing your personal statement

Graduate and professional schools often require some sort of written statement — often called a “statement of purpose,” “personal statement,” or “letter of intent”– as a part of the application. Some statements require rather specific information–for example, the applicant’s intended area of study within a graduate field. Still others are quite unstructured, leaving the applicant free to address a wide range of matters. The importance of the statement varies from school to school and from field to field.

Determine your purpose in writing the statement 

Usually the purpose is to persuade the admissions committee that you are an applicant who should be chosen. Whatever its purpose, the content must be presented in a manner that will give coherence to the whole statement.

Pay attention to the purpose throughout the statement so that extraneous material is left out.

Pay attention to the audience (committee) throughout the statement. Remember that your audience is made up of professionals in their field, and you are not going to tell them how they should act or what they should be. You are the amateur.

Determine the content of your statement

Be sure to answer any questions fully. Analyze the questions or guidance statements for the essay completely and answer all parts. Usually graduate and professional schools are interested in the following matters, although the form of the question(s) and the responses may vary:

• Your purpose in graduate study. Think this through before you try to answer the question.
• The area of study in which you wish to specialize. Learn about the discipline in animal and /or food science in detail so that you are able to state your preferences using the language of the field. It would be helpful to read some of the journal articles of faculty members under which you would like to study at the institutions you have selected.
• Your intended future use of your graduate study. Include your career goals and plans for the future.
• Your unique preparation and fitness for study in the field. Correlate your academic background with your extracurricular experience to show how they unite to make you a special candidate.
• Any problems or inconsistencies in your records or scores, such as a bad semester. Explain in a positive manner. Since this is a rebuttal argument, it should be followed by a positive statement of your abilities. In some instances, it may be more appropriate to discuss this outside of the personal statement.
• Any special conditions that are not revealed elsewhere in the application, such as a significant (35 hour per week) workload outside of school. This, too, should be followed with a positive statement about yourself and your future.
• You may be asked, “Why do you wish to attend this school?” Research the school and describe its special appeal to you.
• Above all, this statement should contain information about you as a person. They know nothing about you unless you tell them. You are the subject of the statement.

Determine your approach and style of the statement (click to open) There is no such thing as “the perfect way to write a statement.” There is only the one that best fits you. DO

• Be objective, yet self-revelatory. Write directly and in a straightforward manner that tells about your experience and what it means to you. Do not use “academese.”
• Form conclusions that explain the value and meaning of your experience, such as what you learned about yourself and your field and your future goals. Draw your conclusions from the evidence your life provides.
• Be specific. Document your conclusions with specific instances. See below a list of general words and phrases to avoid using without explanation.
• Get to the point early on and catch the attention of the reader.
• Limit its length to two pages or less. In some instances it may be longer, depending on the school’s instructions.
• Use the “what I did with my life” approach.
• Use the “I’ve always wanted to be a _____” approach.
• Use a catalog of achievements. This is only a list of what you have done, and tells nothing about you as a person.
• Lecture the reader. For example, you should not write a statement such as “Communication skills are important in this field.” Any graduate admissions committee member knows that.

The Humanitarian Side of Food Science

If you’re interested in food security, the health and welfare of people who live in some of the poorest regions of the world and would like to go in that direction in your career, hats off to you! It’s challenging to live and work in a different country, where the culture and language may be unfamiliar to you. However, this is also some of the more fulfilling and worthwhile work anyone could want to do, and as the nonprofit section expands, there are more and more opportunities for people to enter this field, and get paid for it.

Let’s look at some examples of the sorts of posts available to food scientists like you.

VSO is advertising their spot for a Food Technologist at the time of writing. This is a six-month position in Kenya, and you’ll need 3-5 years’ experience to be accepted. You’ll also need a degree in food science or food technology, and a post-graduate qualification in either is preferred. A background or interest in NGOs is required and branding experience would be advantageous. You’ll learn how to ride a motorbike before the placement begins. And you’ll be provided with a financial package which includes a local living allowance, return flights, accommodation and extensive training before you go.

You’ll be working will Help Self Help Centre’s Marketing and Value Chain Development Manager to build relationships with suppliers and customers, ensuring products are profitable, by: supporting safe and efficient development, modification and the manufacture of food products and processes using staff training and the implementation of a production line; scout for market to target; improve methods of quality control, source raw materials; plus other related tasks.

There are a wide range of organizations that work with food security exclusively. The Center for Food Safety is another powerful organization and nonprofit that works to protect human health and the environment by curbing the use of harmful food production technologies and promoting organic and other forms of sustainable agriculture. At the time of writing, they are seeking to find a Research & Administrative Intern based in Washington, D.C., to join the small but diverse team working on policy, litigation and advocacy campaigns. In this post, you would be supervised by the Operations Director and would work with the Executive Director, Policy Analysts, Program Directors and the Legal Team. The M.Sc. in Food Security at the University of Warwick, UK, draws together critical components such as the contribution of climate change, biodiversity, water, soil, land use, labor, nutrition transition and urbanization with food security.

This two-year, full-time course includes modules on: Crop Physiology and Production; Advances in Crop Protection; Soil, Water and Mineral Nutrition; Environmental Accounting and Ecosystems Services; The Global Food System; Organic and Low Input Systems; Challenges of Global Food Security and a Project/Work Placement, among a number of other compulsory and optional modules. Tuition fees are just under 19,700 GBP.

If you’ve always wondered what living in the rolling hills of Wales is like, what about the M.Sc. in Food, Space and Society? This course is specifically aimed at students who wish to gain expertise in contemporary food geographies, and includes the study of the theoretical debates surrounding food at different spatial scales, as well as justice and sustainability and the scope for applying cutting-edge policy and practical solutions to the challenges that face the increasingly complex food system.

The M.Sc. in Sustainability in Agriculture, Food Production and Food Technology in the Danube Region (and the multicultural European region in general) is of interest to you, and you like to travel, the BOKU University of Natural Resources and Applied Life Sciences in Vienna, Austria is the host of this master’s program. You’ll actually have to travel and study at at least three different universities!

Once you’re done with this program, you’ll have a deep knowledge of agriculture and food production and the sustainability of the Danube Region, have the capability to select and apply adequate methods for sustainability in agriculture, food production and food technology. You’ll have studied Food Safety and Consumer Science; Biotechnology; Sustainable Energy Systems; plus many other modules. Ghent University in Belgium offers a M.Sc. in Nutrition and Rural Development: Human Nutrition. There are a range of different elective courses to choose from, but the common part of the program consists of the study of production, transformation, preservation, marketing and the consumption of food products. The practical component of the program involves identifying problems using quantitative and qualitative research methods and analytical techniques and how to plan, execute and evaluate the appropriate interventions.

I want to Help with your Personal Statement of Purpose for Graduate School in Food Science, Masters, PHD.

We are especially concerned with the fact that about 780 million people in developing countries still do not have access to enough food to meet their basic daily needs for nutritional well-being. Food systems in developing countries are seldom well organized and developed as in the industrialized world. Moreover, problems of growing population, urbanization, lack of resources to deal with pre- and post- harvest losses in food, and problems of environmental and food hygiene mean that food systems in developing countries continue to be stressed, adversely affecting quality and safety of food supplies. People in developing countries are therefore exposed to a wide range of potential food quality and safety risks.

I am especially interested in contemporary ethical issues of food, agricultural and life sciences, and particularly policy making in these areas. I have had the privilege of working on behalf of members of professional organisations focusing on food and agriculture such as  the European Society for Agriculture and Food Ethics, the Agriculture, Food and Human Values Society (USA), and the European Federation of Biotechnology.

Building a Culture of Food Safety

I have read several systematic treatments of many important philosophical and ethical aspects of food (consumption and production). May we eat just anything? Can we do everything with animals, even genetic modification? If not, how can we regulate those processes so that they lead to optimum animal welfare while at the same time producing optimum taste? The production of food also causes environmental pollution – does the fight against hunger have priority over the care of the environment? The care of the environment, animal welfare, and the quality of food should be in a certain harmony, but that is far from granted and hardly easy to achieve. These factors are often in conflict with each other, and a balance will thus need to be searched for.

Other factors to take into consideration are the issue of global famine, the care for a farming class that is able to keep its head above water in a decent way, and a fair trade system that does not throw up unnecessary barriers for newcomers or small market participants and that promotes good nutrition. Famine continues to be a widespread phenomenon that violates human rights, causing nearly a billion people to suffer from hunger or malnutrition. At the same time, deliberate hunger, abundance, and obesity are prevalent in the Western world. Both issues refer to the social and cultural aspects of food. Scientific and technological developments like genetic modification and functional food also play an increasingly important role; almost every bite that we take is determined by scientific developments.

An extra difficulty is that scientific information is often contradictory, or that it relies on statistical probabilities that are difficult to translate into everyday certitudes. All of these factors deserve attention, but it is the mix that is most important.

Access to good and healthy food is a basic human right.

However, in 2022, the UN's Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) reported that about 29.6% of the global population is food insecure. In recent years, the prevalence of food insecurity has increased globally due to a global food shortage.

Several challenges are generating this complex situation, such as:

• climate shocks
• finite resources
• political crises
• globalisation
• the Covid-19 pandemic
• cost of living crisis
• urbanisation

This MSc programme explores important issues related to food security. It is designed with specific attention on the social and economic aspects of food security. For example, the intersection of food production, distribution, consumption, agriculture, environment, nutrition-related policies, and human behaviour.

What will I learn?

Our interdisciplinary MSc will provide you with knowledge and problem-solving skills on the broad topic of food security. You will receive training on quantitative and qualitative data analysis techniques that will help you to understand and measure the effect of the drivers of food insecurity. In addition, you will learn how to design effective policies to improve people's food security in developed and developing countries.

Through this programme, you will explore issues such as:

• the transformation of the food system

You will also learn about the role of genetics in addressing sustainable food production, the importance of orphan crops and the increasing pressures on resources such as water and soil, among other topics.

Reputation, relevance and employability

There is an increasing demand for qualified experts to contribute to policy creation and legislation in food production. In addition, to assess the Agri-industry on tracing their development strategy to improve food production and distribution in a sustainable way.

This MSc provides a multidisciplinary approach to complex issues. You will gain an advanced understanding of the technical, agronomic, environmental, economic and socio-political factors influencing food security.

Programme structure

This MSc programme comprises:

• compulsory courses and option courses
• dissertation

Courses are delivered by lecturers who are active researchers and experts in food security-related fields (for example, the sciences of crop and animal production, food supply chains, and food policy.) You will also benefit from the knowledge and expertise of selected guest speakers from non-academic organisations (for example, the food industry, government and non-governmental organisations).

Dissertation

We will work with you throughout your studies to prepare you for your dissertation project. This will be your opportunity to explore a topic of your choice related to food security.

Your dissertation will also be a fantastic opportunity to put into practice the empirical and methodological research knowledge you will learn during the course to successfully study the chosen dissertation topic. Your dissertation is also a powerful tool to demonstrate (such as to potential employers) that you have mastered research skills, have a good knowledge of your field and an understanding of academic conventions.

We also work with our wide network to find opportunities for dissertation projects with external organisations, enhancing the real-world relevance of your degree.

Field trips and campus facilities

The MSc Food Security aims to develop your knowledge and skills with real-world food security challenges through a field trip experience.

Our field trip will enable you to see how the knowledge, techniques and investigative skills learned during the earlier part of the programme are applied in practice.

Previous field trips included visits to international organisations, government institutions, local universities, and key stakeholders involved in the food supply chain within the relevant country. The countries previously visited have been Malaysia, Kenya, Italy, and Peru.

You may also take part in a day trip during induction week to give you a chance to get to know your fellow students and staff.

Our compulsory field trips or field courses are free, including travel and accommodation.

Changes to field trips

Field course locations may change for a variety of reasons, including the health and safety of our students, staff and communities, and to ensure we can maintain the highest standards for your educational experience. Where suitable, fieldwork will be relocated or rescheduled. We will also look at alternative arrangements that will ensure you achieve the quality learning outcomes of your degree. We will announce any changes as soon as possible.

We are committed to making our degree as accessible and inclusive as possible. In the event that you cannot attend a fieldwork trip, we will provide alternatives with comparable learning outcomes where necessary.

Entry requirements.

These entry requirements are for the 2024/25 academic year and requirements for future academic years may differ. Entry requirements for the 2025/26 academic year will be published on 1 Oct 2024.

A UK 2:1 honours degree, or its international equivalent, in an agricultural, ecological, biological or environmental science, engineering, social science, economics, politics or other relevant subject.

We may also consider a UK 2:2 honours degree, or its international equivalent, with relevant work experience.

This programme is not suitable for applicants pursuing a career in food safety/hygiene or related areas. Your personal statement must demonstrate an understanding of the programme.

Regardless of your nationality or country of residence, you must demonstrate a level of English language competency at a level that will enable you to succeed in your studies.

English language tests

We accept the following English language qualifications at the grades specified:

• IELTS Academic: total 7.0 with at least 6.0 in each component. We do not accept IELTS One Skill Retake to meet our English language requirements.
• TOEFL-iBT (including Home Edition): total 100 with at least 20 in each component. We do not accept TOEFL MyBest Score to meet our English language requirements.
• C1 Advanced ( CAE ) / C2 Proficiency ( CPE ): total 185 with at least 169 in each component.
• Trinity ISE : ISE III with passes in all four components.
• PTE Academic: total 70 with at least 59 in each component.

Your English language qualification must be no more than three and a half years old from the start date of the programme you are applying to study, unless you are using IELTS , TOEFL, Trinity ISE or PTE , in which case it must be no more than two years old.

Degrees taught and assessed in English

We also accept an undergraduate or postgraduate degree that has been taught and assessed in English in a majority English speaking country, as defined by UK Visas and Immigration:

Degree Description:

The M.S. in Agriculture program is designed to provide practitioners and professionals with an opportunity to strengthen and diversify their expertise in agriculture-related disciplines. The program is completely web-based and can be completed from anywhere in the world, although students may choose to take courses on the Pullman campus. Outstanding faculty participation from a diverse array of academic disciplines makes the program truly interdisciplinary. Faculty are a included from animal science, crop and soil sciences, entomology, horticulture, landscape architecture, plant pathology, food science, and economic sciences. With support from an advising committee, students have the opportunity to tailor their coursework to meet their personal and professional learning goals.

To enable students to become outstanding educators and practitioners in agricultural disciplines, the program will foster the development of excellent communication and teaching skills, as well as a comprehensive understanding of research approaches used to address agricultural issues.

Both non-thesis (coursework emphasis) and thesis (research emphasis) tracks are available to students pursuing the MS in Agriculture degree. The non-thesis plan is generally more suitable for distance students.

The non-thesis option requires the completion of additional coursework, preparation of an independent project paper, and an oral defense of concepts discussed in the independent project paper or immersion-based training, and relevant course work. The non-thesis option provides students who do not intend to develop comprehensive research skills with an opportunity to obtain an advanced degree of similar quality and depth as a thesis-based master’s degree program. Additional coursework and the independent project/paper or immersion-based training are substituted for the intensive thesis experience. The non-thesis option is designed for students with relevant experience in industry who are interested in expanding their expertise in a particular agricultural discipline. Knowledge acquired through this experience will likely be used by successful candidates to improve performance or expand opportunities for advancement in a current employment situation, or to support a student with redirecting their career opportunities towards a new discipline.

Students interested in a thesis plan should address this in their application ‘Statement of Purpose.’ In general, the thesis option requires both the successful completion of coursework, and the preparation and oral defense of the thesis based on a research project the student conducted. The thesis option is ideal for people who are interested in pursuing or expanding a professional career involving the scientific aspects of an agricultural discipline. The thesis plan also is suitable for individuals who intend to continue their graduate education.

Admission Requirements:

Applicants must meet the minimum admission requirements of the WSU Graduate School. These requirements include a bachelor’s degree with an undergraduate grade point average of at least 3.0 on a 4.0 scale. A Bachelor’s of Science degree is preferred, in a related area such as agriculture, plant science, biology, entomology, plant pathology or horticulture. Without this relevant background, students may be required to complete 6 to 9 semester credits of agriculture courses at the beginning of their degree program, and these courses may or may not be counted toward the degree program requirements.

Graduates may find employment in government agencies, national labs, academia, private business, and agricultural consulting.

Ticketek Australia says customers' names, emails and dates of birth may have been accessed in cyber security breach

Ticketek Australia says the names of some of its customers, as well as their dates of birth and email addresses, may have been accessed in a data breach.

In a statement on Friday , the company said the information in question was stored in a cloud-based platform hosted by a "reputable, global third-party supplier".

The company said it had secure encryption methods in place for customer passwords, and no customer accounts or payment details had been compromised in the "cyber incident".

"Since our third-party supplier brought this to our attention, over the past few days we have worked diligently to put every resource into completing an investigation so that we can communicate with customers who may have been impacted, and other stakeholders, as quickly as possible," the company said.

"We have already commenced notifying those customers who may have been impacted.

"We apologise for any concern that this news may cause — we will provide further updates as more information becomes available."

News of the data breach comes days after the Department of Home Affairs confirmed it was working with Ticketmaster, a rival ticketing agency owned by US company Live Nation, to investigate claims of stolen customer information .

There is no evidence the two potential incidents are related.

Australia's National Cyber Security Coordinator, Lieutenant General Michelle McGuinness, said on Friday evening that Ticketek had advised her of the potential breach, and the Australian Signals Directorate and Australian Federal Police were also aware of the incident.

Home Affairs Minister Clare O'Neil said that the breach potentially affected many Australians, based on the information she had so far, but reiterated that the data was likely limited to names, dates of birth and email addresses.

She said the number of recent breaches demonstrated the importance of companies quickly alerting customers affected by data breaches, and offering them support.

"I'd ask Australians to be especially vigilant and on the lookout for scams during a time like this … including phishing emails," she said.

"Be on the lookout for suspicious emails and contact cyber.gov.au for support and to report incidents.

"Don't click on any links in emails you aren't absolutely sure about, and if you receive an uncharacteristic email or text, be extra cautious in dealing with it."

Entertainment giant Live Nation has confirmed its ticketing subsidiary Ticketmaster has been hacked.

Live Nation confirmed the data breach in a filing with government regulators late on Friday after the markets closed.

In its statement , Live Nation said the breach occurred on May 20, and that a cybercriminal “offered what it alleged to be Company user data for sale via the dark web.” The company did not say who the personal information belongs to, though it’s believed to relate to customers. It’s unclear why it took the company more than a week to publicly disclose the breach.

Live Nation said in its statement that it “identified unauthorized activity within a third-party cloud database environment containing Company data.” 

The company did not name the third-party cloud database in its statement.

A spokesperson for Ticketmaster, who would not provide their name but responded from the company’s media email address, told TechCrunch that its stolen database was hosted on Snowflake , a cloud storage and analytics company.

Ticketmaster’s spokesperson did not say how the data was exfiltrated from Snowflake’s systems. 

Snowflake said in a post on Friday that it had informed a “limited number of customers who we believe may have been impacted” by attacks “targeting some of our customers’ accounts.” Snowflake did not describe the nature of the attacks, or if data had been stolen from customer accounts.

Snowflake spokesperson Danica Stanczak declined to comment on the record about Ticketmaster’s breach.

Amazon Web Services also hosts much of Live Nation and Ticketmaster’s infrastructure, according to a since-removed customer case study on Amazon’s website.

Live Nation’s communications chief Kaitlyn Henrich also would not comment on the record or answer questions about the breach.

Earlier this week, the administrator of a since-revived popular cybercrime forum called BreachForums claimed to be selling the personal information of 560 million customers, including the alleged personal information of Ticketmaster customers, along with ticket sales and customer card information.

Until now, Live Nation had not commented on the data breach. Earlier this week, Australian authorities confirmed it was assisting Live Nation with a cybersecurity incident, and U.S. cybersecurity agency CISA deferred comment to Live Nation.

TechCrunch on Friday obtained a portion of the allegedly stolen data containing thousands of records, including email addresses. This included several internal Ticketmaster email addresses used for testing, which are not public but appear as real Ticketmaster accounts. TechCrunch verified on Friday that the records we checked belong to Ticketmaster customers. 

TechCrunch checked the validity of these accounts by running the internal email addresses through Ticketmaster’s sign-up form. All of the accounts came back as real. (Ticketmaster displays an error if someone enters an email address that is already a real Ticketmaster account.)

Earlier in May, the Department of Justice and 30 attorneys general sued Live Nation to break up the ticketing conglomerate, accusing Live Nation of monopolistic practices .

MSU faculty appointed to national boards advising U.S. Secretary of Agriculture, Congress

STARKVILLE, Miss.—Two Mississippi State University faculty members are serving on national boards that provide insight and advice to the U.S. Secretary of Agriculture and Congress.

U.S. Secretary of Agriculture Tom Vilsack recently reappointed Mark Lawrence, professor in the MSU College of Veterinary Medicine, to the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s National Agricultural Research, Extension, Education and Economics Advisory Board, and appointed Lorin Harvey, MSU Department of Plant and Soil Sciences assistant professor, to the specialty crop subcommittee of the NAREEE Advisory Board. The boards advise Vilsack and, per mandate, provide reports and recommendations to Congress’s appropriate agricultural committees.

Keith Coble, vice president of the university’s Division of Agriculture, Forestry and Veterinary Medicine, said it is an honor to have two faculty members within the division driving the national conversation in research, extension, education and economics.

“Few universities can say they have two faculty members serving on the NAREEE Advisory Board and its subcommittees. We are proud of our scientists and their national reputation as trusted sources of research-based information,” Coble said. “By leveraging their knowledge and expertise, the USDA is able to make informed decisions that benefit not only the nation’s economy but also its people and the environment.”

Lawrence is the director of the university’s Global Center for Aquatic Health and Food Security and the U.S. Agency for International Development-funded Feed the Future Innovation Lab for Fish housed at MSU. He is in his second term and has served on the 10-person NAREEE Advisory Board since 2016. He was recommended by and represents the U.S. Colleges of Veterinary Medicine. He said it’s fulfilling to serve on a dynamic board that includes perspectives from academe and industry to advise the USDA on the relevance and adequacy of their programming.

“It’s interesting hearing reports from each agency—their priorities, what they are doing and where they are going. It’s an opportunity and responsibility to be the voice for any issues related to veterinary medicine in support of animal health for the USDA,” he said. “I try to provide a perspective concerning relevant and pressing issues in animal health, such as One Health, antimicrobial resistance and infectious disease. Prior to joining the board, I spent years as a USDA researcher studying catfish disease in the Southeastern U.S. That experience coupled with my current role as director of the Feed the Future Innovation Lab for Fish allows me to bring the perspective of aquaculture to the board as well.” 

Harvey, stationed at the Mississippi Agricultural and Forestry Experiment Station’s Pontotoc Ridge-Flatwoods Branch, has dual appointments as a research scientist with MAFES and as sweet potato specialist with the MSU Extension Service. He will serve on the 10-person Specialty Crop Committee tasked with studying the scope and effectiveness of federal programs affecting this industry, specifically related to the Specialty Crop Research Initiative.

Harvey applied for the position, was recommended by the NAREEE Advisory Board and then nominated by Vilsack. He said he is excited to represent MSU and Mississippi as an important state for specialty crops, including sweet potatoes.

“I've been through the process of utilizing these funding opportunities a couple of times now, so I'm really excited to be able to look at it from both sides—as someone who has submitted a project as well as someone who will be reflecting on the effectiveness of these projects,” he said. “My goal is to help move the programs forward in a meaningful way that better utilizes federal funding for specialty crops.”
