Yes, American options, can be exercised before maturity. Lemme guess, it was ITM option. No but, I sold put and it was ITM so I was surprised that it was exercised over the weekend and it expires in 2 weeks so I was assigned the stock, which I knew it will happen but in 2 weeks if it's still ITM.
