‘Ponniyin Selvan: Part One’ Review: Promising Tamil Franchise Kicks Off With Faithful Take on a Literary Classic

Director Mani Ratnam's blockbuster adaptation of Indian author Kalki Krishnamurthy’s bestselling series of historical novels launches the beloved tale on a suitably massive scale.

Ponniyin Selvan: Part One

Tamil filmmaking legend Mani Ratnam takes on the formidable task of adapting Indian bestseller “Ponniyin Selvan” as a two-part epic, the first of which released to excellent box office at home and abroad on Sept. 29. Streamlining the source material considerably, this impressive franchise starter — co-written by Ratnam, Jayamohan and Kumaravel — remains mostly faithful to Kalki Krishnamurthy’s five novels, first serialized in the 1950s in the Tamil magazine Kalki before being translated into multiple other languages, including English.

Popular on Variety

Vandiyadevan soon falls in with a religious man, Azhwarkadiyan Nambi (Jayaram), another spy who also provides some comic relief. Together, they discover a plot to take the crown from the ailing king Sundara Chola and give it to his nephew, who had been passed over. Among those trying to use Vandiyadevan is the beautiful Nandini ( Aishwariya Rai Bachchan ), who uses her looks to get her husband, commander Chinna Pazhuvettariyar (R. Parthiban).

Things get more involved as the film goes along, of course, but Ratnam keeps the different strands moving at a fast enough pace so that you don’t notice the nearly three-hour running time. Nor does it matter that the titular Ponniyan Selvan doesn’t make an appearance until nearly the intermission.

DP Ravi Varman does justice to the sweep of the story, while CG battle scenes are staged like set-pieces from the “The Lord of the Rings” trilogy, a comparison underscored by Rahman’s soaring music. The below-the-line work is top-notch throughout — not just with camera and music, but also in the production design (Thotta Tharani). The Cholas were famous for the temples they built, with the Thanjavur temple standing even now as a testament to their artistry.

Augmented with excellent visual effects, sets representing the city of Thanjavur, the new city of Kanchi and Sri Lanka, bring to life Kalki’s prose that enchanted so many readers. Similarly fine attention to detail went into the costume design, hair and makeup, as well as the jewelry (pieces of which are now offered on sale) for not only the princes and other nobles but also the ladies from Nandini to the princess Kundavai (Trisha Krishnan).

Ratnam has always had a knack for drawing out the best performances from Rai Bachchan (with whom he collaborated on “Iruvar,” “Guru” and “Raavanan”), doing so once again in the star’s first screen role since 2018, even if her dialogue is spoken by Deepa Venkat. In the role of Vandiyadevan, Karthi brings exuberant action to the film; Ravi charms as Arunmozhi; and Vikram and Parthiban exhibit dangerous intent. Rai Bachchan is suitably scheming, as is Krishnan as the princess who only cares about the Chola kingdom and is jealous (with reason) of Nandini’s beauty and ability to beguile.

The film ends on a cliffhanger. While not yet shot, Part Two has been announced and is expected to be released in 2023.

1. Vikram : A whistle worthy actioner that had enough highs right through. It was great to see Kamal being relatively laidback and having fun. Fahadh was very good. In a year in which the films starring the usual larger than life stars Ajith and Vijay not exactly setting the screens on fire, it is fascinating that a veteran (and possibly a reluctant mass hero) gave what the masses wanted.

2.  Gargi:  With Sai Pallavi as the lead, this one had terrific performances all around. Whether it stereotypes (maybe unintentionally) a certain section is definitely debatable, but this is a must watch for the subject it handles and the craft that is on display. A hard-hitting film that disturbs you and leaves you pondering!

3.  Love Today:  A pleasant surprise and a film that is several notches above Pradeep's debut Comali . Tackling a very relevant subject and packing it with fun moments throughout, the surpise was how well the emotional parts were handled. A non star film that pulled in crowds like a star film!

4.  Thiruchitrambalam:  When actors become stars, we often start to miss out on the sweet little films that made them the stars. Thiruchitrambalam was that sweet little film featuring a star. The adjective ‘little’ is only in reference to the scale or magnitude of the film. But with respect to the kind of emotions that it invokes on the audience, this was one of the biggest films of 2022. Dhanush and Nithya Menen were terrific. So were Bharathi Raja and Prakash Raj. Mithran Jawahar had shown glimpses of promise in his earlier films. But they were also mostly remakes. But here, he makes us sit up and take not.

5. Ponniyin Selvan: Part One (PS1) : How effective it was as a drama in getting us involved with the motives of the pivotal characters is a question mark. But given the limitations in condensing a large volume of written material, this one did a neat job in meeting the minimal requisites of big screen entertainment. Most importantly it does enough to have us interested for the sequel.

6.  Kadaisi Vivasayi : Manikandan continues to showcase his brilliance that is devoid of any embellishments. This film successfully pulls you into it and leaves you with a meditative feel throughout its run time. A film that definitely deserved more acknowledgemen from the masses!

7.  Nenjuku Needhi : A competent remake that ensures that it remains true to the original essence. Exposing the dark side of our society, this is a pertinent film made with all the right intentions.

8.  Taanakkaran : A bold film that questions the system that is in place to nurture cops. The film remains tense for the most part and we remain invested with the characters and fear for their plight. Few rough edges aside, this was a compelling watch.

9. Vendhu Thanindhathu Kaadu (VTK) : GVM (Gautham Vasudev Menon) moved away from his territory and made something to probably prove a point. And yes, he succeeds. With a terrific and subtle performance from his leading man, VTK doesn't do anything new, but what it does, it does with aplomb. The lead to the sequel kind of dilutes the impact but that aside, this is one of the better films of 2022.

10.  Mahaan : This one had Vikram in fine form and it was a delight to see him sink into a character without the gimmickry of prosthetics. The film has few issues but also has enough going for it. Karthik Subbaraj seems to enjoy discussing ideals and philosophies in his gangster films. This one did it a lot better than Jagame Thandhiram .

Hrithik Roshan as the charismatic criminal Vedha, in Vikram Vedha.

Vikram Vedha review – swaggering Bollywood remake of Tamil crime caper

Pushkar-Gayatri’s reboot of their 2017 hit improves on the original thanks to two zingy lead performances from Saif Ali Khan and Hrithik Roshan

V ikram Vedha was a Tamil hit in 2017, a twisty, semi-subversive thriller in which a bad-ass Chennai cop and a wily criminal swap stories rather than blows or bullets. Mashing up mythological, procedural and rhetorical elements, it circled fresh genre territory before a dead-end payoff in an abandoned factory. Its makers, the married narrative strategists billed as Pushkar-Gayatri, now relocate to Lucknow for a Hindi remake with major Bollywood stars. Nothing about VV 2.0 refutes the idea that India’s best movie ideas are bubbling up from the south, but Pushkar-Gayatri have taken the money and really run with it. Longer and rangier, this version is also far more relaxed and enjoyable in its tale-telling, scattering swag with every plot swerve.

Replacing lived-in original leads Madhavan and Vijay Sethupathi, who looked as if they would prefer a chinwag to sustained fisticuffs, we get Saif Ali Khan (as the cop Vikram) and Hrithik Roshan (Vedha, the hood): both visibly ready to rumble and nifty dramatic players who make their mutual interrogations zip and zing. In a further upgrade, Radhika Apte’s sceptical air makes Vikram’s lawyer wife Priya – entering this battle of manly wills as Vedha’s counsel – a more forceful presence. It is crucial to Pushkar-Gayatri’s mischievous project that the cop gets it from all sides, and Roshan displays such phosphorescent, screen-torching charisma that our sympathies are regularly redistributed.

The finale has not been overhauled, exactly: after the inventive leaps to get us there, it still feels like the conclusion of a conventional crime story. Yet souping up the narrative engine makes for a smoother ride through the falling bodies; the directors’ cutting and framing, sharp enough first time out, is more so here. Pushkar-Gayatri are keen tinkerers, and there is genuine pleasure in watching a Saturday-night spectacle where all the nuts, bolts and pistons are operating more or less as they should. A likely hit for an industry that sorely needs one – and a story that bears, and even improves with, repetition.

Star movie review: Kavin shines in this pursuit of sappiness

Star movie review: kavin’s star twinkles but fails to shine bright as director elan cares more about the parts and less about the whole. .

movie review tamil 2022

Veteran Malayalam actor Lal plays a lovably unrealistic father in Star, who inspires his son to chase this equally unrealistic dream of becoming an actor. He bails out his son Kalai (Kavin) from difficult situations at his engineering college by faking a heart attack or claiming that his wife is critical. After every ruse, when the father and son walk out of the fix, the latter calls out the ‘overacting’ of the senior. In return, the dad keeps using veteran actor Sivaji Ganesan ’s acting as an excuse for his exaggeration. “You don’t get it,” he sighs. However, in case you ‘get’ this excess, Star will be a moving tale of following your passion. Elan would then come across as the Tamil filmmaker version of Paulo Coelho. Motivational lines such as “The universe always falls in love with a stubborn heart,” will give you goosebumps everytime they appear. But if you are not in tune with the borderline melodramatic nature of the film, things would seem stretched and old school.

In the first part of the movie, we are transported to Gautam Menon’s universe. Preity Mukhudhan as Meera Malaikodi is a stand-in for Jessy from Vinnai Thaandi Varuvaaya. Meera even has a similar brother who keeps messing with our hero. Kalai, on the other hand, in another incongruous and exaggerated sequence, is shown to be the chocolate boy of the college. Even the lecturers are after him! Yet, Meera falls in love only after Kalai pulls off a dance number dressed up as a woman as the misogynistic principal bans girls from dancing. Even though the college’s principal is fuming seeing Kalai’s suggestive moves, he gets to finish his dance and speak about women’s empowerment. Thus, Meera finally realises how Kalai is a beautiful person.

movie review tamil 2022

While the romance is reminiscent of Gautam’s Vinnai Thaandi Varuvaaya, the drama and the screenplay–or the lack of it–reminds one of director’s Vaaranam Aayiram. When Meera leaves Kalai’s life, he meets Surabhi (a horribly miscast A aditi Pohankar) like Priya (Ramya) of Vaaranam Aayiram. There is even a laughable scene at the wedding of Meera, where she thanks Surabhi ostensibly for taking care of the hero. In return, Surabhi thanks Meera! The film is all about the protagonist and thankfully Kavin is an able actor who makes things interesting.

Star only wallows in the suffering of its lead character, who misses success by a whisker. The central idea of the film is about maintaining an unflinching optimism in the face of a catastrophe. However, we fail to see his nobility given Kalai is only driven by ambition, and is aiming for fame and stardom. He often comes across as a selfish, and at times unworthy of empathy.

He is named Kalai (Art), but he aspires to become a star on par with the reigning superstars of Tamil cinema, who are not often associated with the term. The only scene that explores the idea of art is when Kalai’s father talks about it being a tool to propagate great ideas. Even that’s limiting. Till the end, his drive to become a star is only depicted as a childhood fixation and left unexplored. Maybe in life dreams are irrational, but a film like Star, which has nothing going on other than the journey of its hero, has the onus of fleshing him out.

Festive offer

Elan is more interested in making us have those goosebumps. He often manipulates us to tear up; using Yuvan Shankar Raja’s old track at a particular moment is one such attempt. It was one of the well-done sequences in the film where Kalai lives on the streets of Mumbai , and understands what poverty truly means. It was just unfortunate that it didn’t have any great impact on the story or Kalai later. That’s the reason Star only twinkles and fails to shine bright–it’s more about the parts and less about the whole.

‘Star’ Review: Kavin, Elan’s coming-of-age film falls short of excellence

Director elan’s much-awaited film, ‘star’, starring kavin, lal and aaditi phankar, is a coming-of-age movie about a youngster who aspires to become an actor. the struggles and the curveballs that life throws at him are what ‘star’ is all about. read our review..

Listen to Story

A still from Kavin's 'Star'.

  • Director Elan and actor Kavin's 'Star' released in theatres on May 10
  • The coming-of-age film is about a youngster who aspires to become an actor
  • The film, despite having potential to be an excellent film, has some shortcomings

Release Date: 10 May, 2024

2024 has been particularly dull for Tamil cinema. Except for one of two, none of the movies that hit theatres managed to create an impact. However, Kavin’s ‘Star’ was one such film, which piqued everyone’s curiosity, thanks to Yuvan Shankar Raja’s killer music and the brilliantly cut trailer. Will director Elan manage to impress the audience again after his debut film, ‘Pyaar Prema Kadhal’? Let’s find out!

Kalai (Kavin) loves cinema and the influence comes from his supportive father (Lal), who is a photographer. From selling tickets to Thalaivar Rajinikanth’s films to taking photos with cut-outs of him, Vijay and Ajith, Kalai does everything that a cinephile and an aspiring actor would do. He also goes to an engineering college to know that cinema is his true love, much like many youngsters.

He starts working towards it with great support from his family (except his mother), friends and girlfriend. When he gets an inch closer to achieving his dream, life throws a curveball at him. This destroys his confidence and takes him away from the cinema. How he re-discovers his zeal and runs towards his dream forms the story.

The coming-of-age film by director Elan chronicles Kalai’s life from 1989 to 2015 and beyond that. Elan’s story is so relatable as we would have all come across that one friend who hails from a middle-class background but wants to make it big in cinema. And it’s still so fascinating as cinema is one of the prime modes of entertainment. It is because of these factors that ‘Star’ generated positive buzz months before its release.

However, ‘Star’ remains superficial despite having so much potential. The struggles that Kalai goes through don’t linger. The screenplay feels rushed, and it jumps from one emotional scene to another without giving the audience time to process it. That said, certain moments in ‘Star’ do grab your attention. Be it Kalai and his father’s camaraderie or his banter with his mother (Geetha Kailasam), the emotions are conveyed beautifully. The portions where Kalai goes to an acting school in Mumbai add much-needed gravitas to his struggle.

The main grouse with ‘Star’ is that the story meanders to a different tangent in the second half, which gives in to many clichés. While the first half stays true to the genre and Kavin’s dream, the second half lags because of this tonal shift. While it's justified that it is also Kalai’s struggle, it subverts the feeling it created in the first half.

After a while, the struggles become superficial. We get to see the Kalai’s problems in familial life and mental health, but not how the cinema industry functions, especially when a newcomer is trying to break in without solid backing.

The makers of ‘Star’ promised three surprises in the film. And all the three surprises become our favourite moments in the film. They become proper theatrical comments, which would evoke apllause and screams.

Kavin’s performance as Kalai works well for ‘Star’. It is mostly effective and also shows he has improved as a performer. It is Lal, who plays Pandian, who has our hearts with his act. Preity Mukundhan, who played Meera Malarkodi, has a great screen presence and her chemistry with Kavin is laudable.

Aaditi Pohankar does the classic ‘loosu ponnu’ (read: bubbly naïve girl) role with much conviction. She also scores in some of the emotional sequences.

Composer Yuvan Shankar Raja is the backbone of ‘Star’. His songs and background music elevate the film in many places. While they work as a standalone album, sometimes, his music forces us to feel the emotion. Cinematographer Ezhil Arasu’s frames took us back to the 90s and 2000s. Editing by Pradeep E Ragav complimented the vision of the filmmaker.

‘Star’ could have been a great coming-of-age film about an aspiring actor. However, it ended up as a showreel more than a emotional and inspiring documentation of his life.

Sita Ramam

Is Sita Ramam Based on a True Story?

By Aditi Rathi

Sita Ramam was one of the most successful Telugu movies of 2022. Starring Dulquer Salmaan as Lieutenant Ram, the film was released in multiple languages, including Hindi, Tamil, and Malayalam. The romantic drama received primarily positive reviews, and its theme impressed the audience. While the film story has left fans spellbound, many wonder whether it is based on a true story.

Sita Ramam follows the story of a Pakistani student named Afreen (Rashmika Mandanna) who looks for Sita Mahalakshmi ( Mrunal Thakur ) to deliver a letter from her husband, Ram. This is followed by a flashback introducing Lieutenant Ram, an orphan who receives a mysterious letter from Sita during one of his missions. When he returns home, he finds Sita and the two fall in love with each other. However, their love story soon turns tragic when Ram has to go back on a mission.

Is Ram and Noor Jahan’s story real?

Ahead of the movie’s release in 2022, Hanu Raghavpudi revealed that Sita Ramam is a fictional story. However, he did seek inspiration from a real-life incident. During an interview with The Hindu , the director revealed that he found a book that featured an unopened inland letter. This is what inspired him to make the movie.

He said, “The letter I found in that book, in 2007, was from a mother to her son. I gathered that their family is from Vijayawada and the son is living in a hostel. She had enquired about his well-being and asked when he would be home.” The Sita Ramam director added, “It got me thinking, what if the contents of the letter had something crucial that could change the course of events?”

Reportedly, Rajkumar Kandamudi later introduced an army backdrop to the story. Dulquer Salmaan was soon locked in to play the lead role. Moreover, after several reconsiderations, Mrunal Thakur and Rashmika Mandanna were roped in for the roles of Sita and Afreen.

Aditi Rathi

Always lookin' for what's cookin', Aditi is a fan of American sitcoms and Indian cinema. The combination is as quirky as she is. Apart from writing all day, you can catch her playing with her street dogs, painting, or cooking.
