Mandated Training Related to Infection Control

  • Infection Control and Barrier Precautions FAQ
  • Infection Control Approved Providers of Course Work

All dentists, dental hygienists, licensed practical nurses, optometrists, podiatrists, and registered nurses must complete course work or training appropriate to their practice regarding infection control and barrier precautions, including engineering and work controls to prevent the transmission of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) and the hepatitis b virus (HBV) in the course of professional practice, every four years according to Section 6505-b of the Education Law . You must attest to having completed this requirement to the State Education Department on your first licensure/registration application and at every subsequent registration.

All physicians, physician assistants, and specialist assistants must complete course work or training in accordance with Section 239 of the Public Health Law at the time of their initial licensure/registration and every four years thereafter.

Choosing a Provider

You may choose a training provider that has been approved by either the State Education Department or the Department of Health. This list of providers includes those organizations approved by the State Education Department as providers of training in infection control. Providers must use the prescribed syllabus prepared by the Department. They are required to cover, at a minimum, the seven core elements jointly approved by the State Education Department and the Department of Health, and are authorized to issue a Certification of Completion for each person completing the course work. Although most providers will present the course work or training in a classroom setting, some may offer a distance format. Dates, fees, and course length may vary from provider to provider.

The Department has approved course work for specific professional groups. Please check with the provider to determine if the course they are offering is appropriate for your profession , as some providers will offer training ONLY to certain professional groups.

To obtain a list of course work providers approved by the Department of Health (DOH) or to contact the Department of Health regarding infection control for physicians, physician assistants or specialist assistants write or call:

Bureau of Healthcare-Associated Infections

Healthcare Epidemiology and Infection Control Program New York State Department of Health

You may also find a list of approved New York State Department of Health Providers by clicking here . DOH is responsible for approving course work offered by DOH-regulated health care facilities or offered by physician or physician/specialist assistant organizations.

  • When you have completed the required coursework or training, the approved provider will give you a Certification of Completion.
  • Please DO NOT submit this form to the State Education Department. Instead, keep the certificate in the event that you are required to submit it at a later date.
  • You must attest to having completed this requirement to the State Education Department on your first licensure/registration application and at every subsequent registration.

Physicians, Physician Assistants and Specialist Assistants

  • If you are affiliated with a hospital, please DO NOT submit this form to the Department of Health. Instead, keep the certificate in the event that you are required to submit it at a later date. It is also recommended that you file a copy with your hospital personnel office or hospital administrator. Hospitals are required to verify completion of coursework prior to credentialing physicians who wish to be affiliated.
  • If you are NOT affiliated with a hospital, you must submit the Certificate of Completion to the Department of Health at the address above. Please keep a copy for your records.

You may be eligible for exemption from the training if you can document, to the satisfaction of the Department, that there is no need for the training based on the nature of your practice.

If you wish to apply for exemption based on the nature of your practice, or if you can satisfactorily document that you have completed course work in infection control within the past four years that included the minimum information required in the New York State approved syllabus, you should indicate that you wish to apply for an exemption on the  Form 1IC  (11 KB) and submit the completed form to the New York State Education Department Office of the Professions at the address on the form. It should be noted that professionals in these fields not currently practicing in New York State but holding active New York State licenses DO NOT need to complete the infection control course work at this time. Upon resuming practice in New York State you will have 90 days to complete the training.

If you wish to apply for an exemption, you should contact the Department of Health, Bureau of Healthcare Associated Infections, at the link above. Any questions related to the Infection Control and Barrier Precautions Workshop can be sent to [email protected]

About the Healthcare Epidemiology and Infection Prevention and Control Certificate Program

The certificate is designed for masters and doctoral students at The Johns Hopkins University and junior and mid-level professionals with an interest in gaining exposure to the expertise and skills utilized by healthcare epidemiologists and infection preventionists. Healthcare epidemiologists and infection preventionists aim to prevent and control healthcare-associated infections, antimicrobial resistant and epidemiologically significant organisms and other adverse outcomes in the healthcare setting by translating research into practice.

Australian Government Department of Health and Aged Care

Free online training to help keep you safe at work

Boost your COVID-19 awareness with online infection control training. It’s quick to do and costs nothing. Find out how a whole team of day care educators used it to bump up their knowledge and confidence to manage their COVID-19 health policies.

covidsafe

COVID-19 has brought new challenges in the way we work, particularly for people who care for others day-to-day.

You want to stay on top of current and relevant information to keep care recipients, staff and visitors safe.

That’s why the Australian Government Department of Health has created online COVID-19 infection control training .

This program is free to everyone and especially recommended for people working in the healthcare sectors.

People like Rachael Phillips, Manager of Birrelee Multifunctional Aboriginal Children’s Service – a long day care centre in Tamworth, NSW – have already seen results.

Biralee’s staff are feeling more confident and able to carry out the centre’s policies to keep everyone safe.

For them the reliable nature of the training made it essential. The short length and being able to do it online on a phone made it easy. And the interesting information made it stick.

“We have to stay up to date with all the changes coming through. Which is a lot when you’re in childcare during COVID,” Rachael said.

“There’s so much online – a lot that’s wrong – and some panic and fear. But once we did the infection control training, we were more at ease about why we have certain processes and how to protect ourselves.”

“We felt more equipped to correct misinformation for some families, answer their questions and back up our policies, which were already in place.”

As early childhood educators, her team works directly with children and families – people who rely on them for quality care, every day.

Understanding why and how to take proper care of themselves and the kids is critical.

“We already knew to be diligent, and that this was serious. But we always familiarise ourselves with as much information as possible and the training busted a lot of myths for us,” said Rachael.

“It wasn’t overwhelming. I liked that it was factual, easy to navigate and sufficient.

“The children at our centre are all Aboriginal and 8 of our 13 staff are Aboriginal. We do everything we can to protect our community. We’re now better able to talk about and take actions for everyone’s safety.”

5. Occupational Infection Prevention and Control: Education and Training

At a glance.

Occupational Infection Prevention and Control: Education and Training from the Infection Control in Healthcare Personnel: Infrastructure and Routine Practices for Occupational Infection Prevention and Control Services (2019) guideline.

Recommendations

For healthcare organization leaders and administrators, for occupational health services leaders and staff.

  • Federal, state, and local education and training requirements
  • Modes of infectious disease transmission and implementation of standard and transmission-based precautions
  • Hand hygiene
  • Sharps injury prevention
  • Immunizations recommended by the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) for healthcare personnel
  • Healthcare personnel screening for selected infectious diseases before job placement and periodically thereafter
  • How to access occupational health services, when needed, and expectations for reporting exposures
  • Expectations for reporting illnesses or conditions (work-related or acquired outside of work), such as rashes or skin conditions (e.g., non-intact skin on hands); febrile, respiratory, and gastrointestinal illnesses, and hospitalizations resulting from infectious diseases
  • Sick leave and other policies and procedures related to infectious healthcare personnel, including the risks of presenteeism to other healthcare personnel and patients

Occupational IPC education and training programs are intended to increase HCP knowledge, competency, and practical skills about infectious diseases and their prevention. These programs are generally managed by the IPC program of a facility or HCO.

Understanding the rationale for IPC practices can increase HCP adherence to, and acceptance of, those practices 1 2 3 . In addition, education and training can:

  • ensure HCP are provided with and become familiar with organizational OHS and IPC policies and procedures;
  • increase HCP acceptance of immunizations;
  • encourage prompt recognition, reporting, evaluation, and management of potentially infectious exposures and illnesses 3 ;
  • decrease exposures and infections among HCP 4 ;
  • facilitate control of infectious disease outbreaks 5 ; and
  • ensure adherence to federal, state, and local education and training requirements.

Education and training are provided to HCP initially upon hire; periodically during employment, such as via annual refresher training; and as needed to address a specific need, such as new job duties, new medical devices or equipment, or outbreak control.

Education and training requirements

In addition to standard education and training that is expected for HCP to safely perform their work, federal (see Box 4.Examples of Federal Regulations Requiring Education and Training for Employees), state, and local authorities maintain mandated requirements for the education and training of employees 6 7 8 .
