HOMEWORK PLANNER:

If you're anything like me, being organized about what you're doing makes you feel a million times better!

I'm a college student now, but these homework planner printables would work amazing for any grade level!

Every student learns differently (um even my sister and I have MAJORLY different studying approaches haha) so I included 3 different printables that you can choose from!

I usually will start off with using the page on the far right in the image below and brain dump everything I have to get done. I will then take it to the Weekly Homework Tracker and write in which days I am doing everything.

Finally, I use the page on the far left below as a daily schedule and time-block when I do everything!

It's the best and makes me feel a million times more organized!

Homework Planner Template

The best thing I can say about this homework planner is that my own kids like it enough to want me to print a copy for them each week. The design for this planner came from a mash-up of the techniques that my brother and I used in college to organize our time. I've refined the design based on feedback from my kids (one high-schooler and two home-schoolers).

How It Works : This planner combines two very useful tools for keeping track of your homework assignments, both on a single page. First, on the left is a homework check list for each of your classes. Use it to list the assignments, due dates, and the estimated time to complete each assignment. List upcoming exams and plan times to study. Second, on the right side you can plan your week to figure out how you will get everything done.

Printable Homework Planners

The following PDF files can be printed as needed. The main difference is in the weekly schedule because high-schoolers and home-schoolers tend to do their homework at different times of the day.

Description

This spreadsheet includes two separate worksheets with slightly different designs. The Homeschool design doesn't include the "time" column because we found it wasn't as critical to predict how much time a particular assignment would take. However, for high school and college, estimating the time to complete each assignment can be extremely helpful.

We designed it so that you can either print blank copies of the planner, or edit it electronically. You may be able to store and edit this planner on your mobile device if you are using Excel for iPad/iPhone or Google Sheets.

Tips for Students:

1. Customize the template: Using Excel or Word, enter your class names on the left and your typical weekly schedule. For example, use the schedule to highlight the times for each of your classes, your extracurricular activities, part-time jobs, etc.

2. Print blank copies: After customizing the template, you can print as many of these planner pages as you need, and you won't need to enter your typical weekly schedule each time.

3. Don't forget incomplete assignments: When switching to a new page each week, don't forget to go through your list of assignments and transfer the incomplete assignments to the new page.

4. Don't lose it: Keep your planner page in a folder that you always have with you. If you are worried about misplacing it, try taking a picture of it with your phone as a backup.

5. Use a mobile app: If you have a phone with the Excel or Word app or Google Docs app, and you are allowed to use a mobile device in school, you could try going paperless and editing the template on your phone. You could also try using one of the many "student planner" or "homework planner" mobile apps. The problem with this approach is that phones can be a huge distraction. If you are obsessed with Instagram or texting, it may be better to avoid using your phone if you want to get anything done.

Note to Teachers:

You are welcome to print copies of this planner to give to your students. The worksheet is pretty intuitive, but don't assume that students will know how to use it. Teach them about managing their time and help them learn how a planner can help.

One important thing that you can do to help your students is to give them a realistic estimate of how much time each assignment will take. If you get a lot of students complaining that an assignment took longer than you said, either cut back the work (if it was excessive), or use the feedback to give a better estimate next time around.

Between schoolwork, online work, homework, products, submitting work, and more, you might feel like you don’t have enough time in the day to plan and complete it.  To keep track of these things and make them a little more manageable, we wanted to give you this free homework planning sheet.  It will help you and your child stay on top of their work.

Homework and Organization sheet

I think the hardest part of the homework is learning how to budget time.  This lesson is hard for students to learn (even adults still struggle in this area!).   It’s important to teach our kids to budget & organize their time.  Time management skills are one of the best things we can teach our children. To help our kids tackle the time-management portion of homework, I give them this Homework Planning Sheet  every week.

On top of that, making a “to-do” list helps kids see what has to be done and allows them to check things off once it’s finished.  This gives them a sense of accomplishment.

This homework planner offers students the benefit of writing down all their tasks, reviewing what they must do, and budgeting their time to fit it all in.

Homework planning sheet for kids

It gives them a chance to look at the upcoming week and write down everything that they have to do for the week.  They can see exactly what needs to be done and when they need to do it.    We write in things like practice or appointments on certain days, so they can see where they will have limited time.

This homework planner is an easy way to help our kids with time management and organization.

Why do children fall behind on classwork?

  • Procrastination.   Are they setting aside enough time to complete their work?   Are they doing it before other things each day (before relaxing, sports, etc.)
  • Confusion.  Does your child understand the material and what they are asked to do for their homework?  Sometimes children ignore their homework because it is too confusing, and they are embarrassed to ask for help, admitting failure.

Tips to Remember While Doing School Work at Home:

homework station

  • Have a system for completed work.   When our kids finish their work and it has been submitted, we keep it in case the teacher can’t find it later (emails get lost, and I didn’t want our kids to have to repeat the work).   We kept one bin per child. We would paperclip the work from the week together and a piece of paper with the date on it (paperclipped to the top of the pile).  We’d throw it into the bin.  Simple.
  • Use this time to teach your child time-management skills.  Work before play.   It’s a lesson best learned when your child is young.
  • Use our Homework Organization Tip (which has worked for us for several years.)

How to Plan a Homework Schedule

It feels like homework never stops getting piled on, and keeping track of it all can feel a little chaotic. That’s where a homework schedule comes in. With a good schedule, you won’t have to worry about missing homework assignments or not having enough time to finish them, and it’s surprisingly easy to put one together. Not sure where to start? Don’t worry—we’ll walk you through what to do step-by-step below!

Setting Up a Homework Schedule

Step 1 Set a time frame for doing homework.

Creating a Homework Space

Step 1 Select your environment carefully.

Understanding What Needs To Get Done

Step 1 List all of the homework and activities that you have for that day or week.

  • The subject or course in which the work is assigned (for example, Spanish , algebra , French or English )
  • Know what you're expected to hand in or do and ask if you do not understand (for example, turn in an essay , develop a PowerPoint presentation, or take a test.)
  • The details of your assignments (for example, double-spaced or single-spaced, blue ink or black).
  • Page numbers (which pages you need to read, study, or refer to complete your assignment.)
  • Due date of the assignment.

Getting All of Your Homework Done

Step 1 Estimate how much time will be needed to complete each assignment.

  • To solve this problem, if you cannot meet all the deadlines, use a static priority rate-monotonic policy. Find the course that releases new homework the most frequently, and list it the highest (do the work first), and so forth. This is mathematically optimal among all static-priority scheduling policies. In other words, if ANY static priority scheme can meet all the deadlines, the rate-monotonic static priority scheme will meet all the deadlines, too. When the static priority scheme misses deadlines, it is deterministic - the lowest priority class assignments will be skipped, so it behaves predictably when you are overloaded. If certain assignments have the same due date, then start with the one(s) that are hardest or will take the longest.

Step 3 Break down your homework time.

  • If you have a five-page English paper due on Friday, evenly spread the total amount of hours you believe it is going to take to complete the paper between each day.

Step 4 Write in break times.

Expert Q&A

  • Avoid distractions such as TV, video games, phone conversation, or surfing the internet. You must fully devote your schedule to doing this. That means turning off all electronics except your lamp , clock , and room light, and, if needed, your computer. You may even want to turn off your phone. Thanks Helpful 0 Not Helpful 0

Tips from our Readers

  • Try writing reminders on sticky-notes about your assignment due dates or important information you really need to remember. Put these sticky notes in a place you regularly go to in your house (such as your homework area, bedroom, or closet), so that you'll see them and be reminded.
  • If you're having a really hard time concentrating, take a short break (even if it isn't your schedule break time). Even taking a walk outside for ten minutes or grabbing a quick snack from the kitchen can help you reset.
  • If music with lyrics distracts you, don't try to listen to it while you do homework. Consider playing white noise or instrumental music instead to help you focus.

I have over 200 beautiful and free homeschool planning pages and I have more for you on my homeschool planner page.

One of the most important parts and the largest part of your homeschool planner are the lesson planning pages.

It’s important that you have the right lesson planning pages for the way you plan to set you up for success.

When I began homeschooling, there was not anything available for me to create my own planner.

Over 200 Beautiful and Free Homeschool Planning Pages (Some Editable)

Because I had unique circumstances each year, I created the free 7 Step Homeschool Planner.

I take you Step by Step in preparing your own unique homeschool planner with my free pages.

Along the way, you have the option to pay for upgrades too.

More than 10+ years later, the free forms and customized forms have grown by the hundreds.

Table of Contents

Free Homeschool Lesson Planning Pages

Today, I’m sharing what I call my original lesson planning templates.

Too, in this one download, you will receive 3 different types of lesson planning pages.

  • I have 180 page original lesson planning pages.
  • I have an editable 2 page spread for the day and week number of the year. Remember to fill in the subjects you need and print exactly what you need to.
  • And then I have an editable 2 page spread for the Lesson Number and day. Same thing here, fill in what you need then print.

Each year your needs will change and so should your planner.

For example, one year you may be homeschooling one child and have to add your next child.

Or maybe you have a child going into middle or high school.

I have every form you need right here on my site to make your planner unique your dynamic circumstances.

Over 200 Beautiful and Free Homeschool Planning Pages (Some Editable)

However, you will want to know how to best use these planning pages and planner.

As I mentioned, I’ve used many planners and created this one after using many.

6 Features of the Free 7 Step Homeschool Planner

For example, look at these features that set apart my planner and lesson planning forms.

  • It is a DAILY planner. There is NOT enough room for me to journal what we did on a weekly lesson planning page.
  • The pages are NOT DATED. Why? The VERY first thing a planner can make you feel is behind when you miss a day. YOU fill in as you school. This makes homeschool adjust to life as it should.
  • It is a 2-page spread . The other pet peeve I have besides not having enough room to write, is not having enough space to put other subjects or topics we learn about. Having the 2-page spread to write across gives me plenty of room to look at each day.
  • it’s coil bound. NO 3 ring binders to hurt your wrist when writing AND the most important reason is to NOT keep adding forms. Organization is about creating a simple system and using it, not constantly recreate a perfect page. One of the best things is that it lays flat.
  • You print at home using the double-sided feature . To keep the lesson planner thinner, just use regular paper and use it on both sides. My pages are all created for a two page spread. Then all you need to take it to Office Depot or other office place is to coil bind. That is unless you have a coil bind machine at home.
  • Lastly, the two page spread leaves enough room for multiple ages . You can divide the page however you want to get all of your children (yes even large families) on one two page spread.

Weekly Planner with Menu Planner on Opposite Page

Available unlined and unlined The planner is designed to be printed double-sided with the Weekly Planner on one side and the Menu Planner on the other. The Weekly Planner should be hole-punched on the left side of the page which will leave the Menu Planner punched on the right side. When your Planner is open on your desk, the Weekly Planner page will be on the right, with the Menu Planner and Grocery List on the left.

The pages are all designed to fit in a standard 8 1/2" x 11" three ring binder. If you print the pages double-sided, your clip-off grocery list will be on the back of last week's To Do list. As you finish the week, copy any incomplete items from this week's To Do list onto the list for next week and clip your grocery list for next week off so you can start your week with all of the items you need for your menu plan. Menu Planner / To Do / Chore Chart

Homeschool Planner: Screenshot of Menu Planner, To Do Chart, Chore Chart

The combined Menu Planner / To Do / Chore Chart can help you keep track of multiple household tasks for yourself and/or children all in one place. There are two pages one for the left with columns for the day's menu, mom's to do list, and 2 child columns. The page for the right has 4 child columns.

Weekly Assignment Pages

Homeschool Planner: Screenshot of Weekly Assignment Sheet

There are three different Weekly Assignment pages, with columns for one, two, or three children. If you have two students, you may choose either the two column Weekly Assignment page, or the one column and give one to each child. I suggest filling out and keeping the master assignment sheet in mom's planner, and copying the complete assignment sheet to give to each child. By using the one column Weekly Assignment page, you allow more room in each column to detail assignments.

Using the Weekly Planner with Weekly Assignment Sheets: The Weekly Planner is designed to be hole-punched on the left side of the page, and the Weekly Assignments/Unschooling Record Keepers are designed to be hole punched on the right side of the page. When your Planner is open on your desk, the Weekly Planner page will be on the right, with the Assignments/Unschooling Record Keeper page opposite the corresponding Weekly Planner page on the left. The pages are all designed to fit in a standard 8 1/2 x 11 three ring binder.

Although the planner pages can be copied two-sided with the Weekly Planner on one side and the Assignment Sheet on the other side, the most practical way to use the planner is to print the pages single-sided , and to use the appropriate Weekly Assignment page opposite each Weekly Planner page. This allows you to add other relevant pages between each week for quick reference, while still allowing both the Planner and the Assignment pages to be seen simultaneously.

Unit Study Planner and Log

Homeschool Planner: Screenshot of Unit Study Planner

The Unit Study Planner can help you organize your resources and pull it all together. The Unit Study Planner is designed to be used as you initially plan your unit. It allows you to list all of your resources, set your goals for your unit, and begin to organize your unit.

Once you have organized a list of your resources and visited the library to finalize the books you have available, the Unit Study Log can be used to record your lesson plans. It has columns to list the activities you plan to do for the unit, including the date, the activity, the amount of time planned for the activity, and any supplies needed or notes for the activity.

Are there plans to update this printable planner for future years? I have used it ever since I can remember and keep coming back for more. 🙂

This has been updated!

Hi Brenden - Thanks for asking. I apparently missed that it needed updating for 2025. I will get that done!

You just made me day!

You are welcome. Have a great homeschool year!

Looking forward, Jeanne

Thank you!!!

I love this! The only thing I would like more is a copy I could type into on excel!

this is the best resource i have found. i usually get overwhelmed when looking at planner pages because there is too much going on and i do better with simple layouts. yet i usually do not find one with all the info i need on one page. i am so glad i found yours. its like it was made for me.

I'm glad you like it, Misty! I wanted to keep it clean and useful and avoid a design that would use a lot of printer ink).

Hi Mary Ann Thank you very much. This article was very helpful. Kind regards, Kavya

Thank you, Kavya.

Thank you so much..your resources are extremely helpful.

Hi Rabeea - I'm so glad you are finding the resources useful!

I've been blessed by this site numerous times over the years. Thank you again for blessing so many of us with these resources!! May God bless you and your family!

Thank you for your kind words, Keli! I'm so glad you have found the resources helpful.

Thank you! ❤️ First year homeschool mom here. Your resources are greatly appreciated!

This look good, however we are in 2022/2023 year. Why is it set for 2024?

The download includes 2022-2024. We update annually and try to stay ahead by one year.

I'm so glad you are finding the resources useful! Best wishes on your homeschool journey. 😊

I am trying to access your homeschool assignment sheet and it is not letting me because I apparently already HAVE a username and password but have NOOOOOOOO idea what it is. Can you PLEASE help me with this issue?????????????????

I sure can! 🙂 To access the planner, click the button and in the popup form enter your subscribed email address and the password morningcoffee . The password is the same for everyone.

You people are awesome

Glad you are finding the planner helpful!

I’m not able to subscribe. I have a hotmail account and I’m not getting the subscriber email.

Hi LaVerne - Have you checked your junk/spam folder? Some providers filter emails for you.

This is wonderful, thank you!

You are very welcome!

Thank you for the work that went into creating this awesome resource for us. Blessings!

You are very welcome! Enjoy. 🙂

I am trying to subscribe so that I can download the free planner sheets but I am not receiving an email. I have put in my email half a dozen times and am not getting a confirmation email to my inbox or my junk mail. What do I do?

I have entered my email several times and I'm not receiving and email so I get get the subscriber downloads. Can you add me?

Hi Anna - did you check in the Promotions tab in your inbox? Gmail almost always puts the confirmation in there.

Hi Stefanie - I'm sorry for the trouble. Have you checked your bulk/junk/spam folder in Hotmail to see if the confirmation is there? I have not gotten a bounce notice for your email address.

I see now that you said you have checked. I will add your address manually and let you know when it's done.

Thank you so much!

Thank you bunches for the planner. Very useful. I'm very new to homeschooling my high school son. Still exploring our options. A++ for your planner!

You are welcome! Glad you find it useful. 🙂

Hi. I have repeatedly tried to subscribe. I have not yet received a confirmation email. Might I already have subscribed years ago, when first started preparing for homeschooling? Is there a way that can be checked? If I have subscribed years ago, might you delete me so that I can subscribe and get the newsletters you send out, please? I don't seem to have anything in my email from here and am looking to start both my kiddos unschooling this coming school year. Please, may you help me? Thanks so very much! 🙂

Hi Kimberly - Your email address was not on the list (I can only assume that the confirmation emails are being blocked by Hotmail for some reason). I have added the address you submitted with your comment and you should be able to use that as the username and morningcoffee as the password to login and download the planner. Sorry for the trouble.

Hi, I have subscribed but have not received an email link yet.

Hi Anna - I've added your address manually since it didn't go through. You should be able to download the files now. Sorry for the delay!

Is there any way to make this A5 size. I would LOVE to put this in my Kikki K planner and utilise 🙂

Thanks so much

Although the pages can't be reworked, you could use the printer function to force the planner pages to fit on an A5 page.

Hi there! I love the planner! Thank you so much!! It would be nice to have a sheet of weekly hour tracking. The page might have to be oriented landscape, but it would be nice to have an hour column down the side and then the 7 days of the week listed beside it so I could track what was done on what day and when. You could maybe even include a total at the bottom. That way I can track my hours for the week without having to have a page per day (like on the daily tracker page). I hope this makes sense! Thanks!

Thank you! This has saved me mountains of work.

Thank you for sharing! I've been looking for a planner and other things to print for sometime now. This will also help me with homeschooling. Bless you!

I'm glad you find it helpful! Enjoy. 🙂

This is the best homeschool tool that I have! I have been waiting for the 2017-18 version!! This is so clean and professional looking... it has streamlined so much of my life! Love it!! Thank you!!

Sorry it took so long to get the 2017/2018 version out - hopefully things will be less hectic next year!

Hello, I just moved to New York from Texas and we had wanted to look at the home school program here. It was pretty simple in Texas to where used certain curriculums and then annotated everything on Grade Sheet. Is there anything different for New York that I would have to get certified/verified to make sure my son's graduation diploma is official?

Since homeschooling is regulated by the state, TheHomeSchoolMom does not offer guidance on legal requirements. We suggest that you get in touch with local groups and ask there. You can get started by looking through our page for New York homeschool groups , where you'll see both statewide and local groups.

Best wishes on your continued homeschool journey!

Thank you SO MUCH for these copies!!! I am new to the idea of home-schooling my son since he's having such a tough transition from elementary up to middle school. These organizational charts are such a great tool.

You are very welcome, Deb! Best wishes on your homeschool journey.

This is why I’ve created a planner that includes all the essential printables needed to help you have a well-organized homeschooling journey. This practical planner is here to guide you every step of the way!

It’s no secret that I love getting organized with planners. I love listing down almost everything! From my weekly tasks to daily priorities, name it, I probably have it listed. Planning has immensely changed my life. It has made me more prepared, more confident, and more productive.

And I share my love for planning here in the Shining Mom blog.

Introducing the Free Homeschool Planner: 30 Printable Pages!

As I gear up for our homeschooling journey this upcoming school year, I’ve noticed that although I have already shared hundreds of free school printables on the blog, I only have a few organizers for homeschooling. And since I will soon be homeschooling my Kindergarten son this new school year,  I’ve realized the need to come up with a comprehensive homeschool planner.

I know that a homeschool planner can provide the essential organizational structure I need to efficiently manage diverse subjects, assignments, and activities. With it, I can get organized and be able to set clear learning objectives each day. A planner will help me juggle multiple responsibilities. I know keeping one is a must in my homeschooling journey.

So this week, I tried my hands again at designing more organizers, and so this time, I created a homeschool planner. My teaching experience for eight years (although in a school setting) helped me create printables that I think will also be useful for me and for you too!

homework planning page

Today, I am thrilled to finally release a free homeschooling planner not just for myself but also for all my fellow homeschooling parents and teachers out there to enjoy. What are the homeschooling organizational printables included?

Why a Homeschool Planner is Essential

A homeschool planner provides a framework for organizing lessons, assignments, and activities, ensuring a systematic and well-rounded education. Here are the benefits of having one in your homeschooling journey:

  • Organized Learning: A homeschool planner help you structure your learning journey. With it, you’ll get a clear roadmap of lessons, assignments, and activities, ensuring that educational goals are met.
  • Time Management: Homeschooling needs you to keep a good b balance between academics and other responsibilities. A planner helps allocate time for lessons, breaks, extracurriculars, and family activities, fostering a healthy routine and preventing overwhelm.
  • Progress Tracking: With a homeschool planner, it’s easier to track progress and identify areas that need more attention. With a planner, you’ll get to evaluate learning outcomes allowing you to adjust teaching strategies and content as needed.

I am a missionary teaching Bible College classes in Papua New Guinea for Pastors and Pastors-to-be, most of whom do not even have smart phones, as they come from small villages in the mountains. They have no money to buy expensive paper goods, and there are no stores nearby who sell them. They have never been taught productivity so I have been printing your materials (I have used your free AND have paid for some) for the students. It has changed their lives! They are so happy and grateful to have things that help them get and stay organized. Thank you for your beautiful materials. You are a blessing, and so I bless you!

Middle and high school planning printables

Now I don’t know about you, but despite my best intentions, I seem to always forget something that has already been purchased, curriculum ideas for upcoming years, or what may already be on our bookshelves to use for our younger children. Sticky notes and random sheets of paper just don’t cut it, so the Middle and High School Planner pages were put together to make life a little easier for myself overall. (And let’s face it, these are a lot prettier than the random sheets of notebook paper that were accumulating in my binder).

I’m printing off a copy for each of our children and it gives me a central location to jot down notes, ideas, and what we’re doing as we go along. Overall, there are sixteen pages in the Middle and High School Planner pages (plus one that you don’t have to print at the end), and two different versions – a blue/green color-themed set and a rainbow color-themed set. Laurianna saw me working on them and said she thought hers should have more color, so I had to readjust them. (grins)

If you’d like to see what we’ve been planning for homeschool high school so far, don’t miss our Homeschool High School Plan post that was shared earlier. In addition to walking through our overall plans I share how overwhelmed I was to begin with and some tips on laying the foundation for the upcoming years. There is also a link to a simple overview printable that you may prefer to this more in-depth one.

A Quick Look & Overview Planning

Overview planning pages for middle and high school

Use the first two pages to plan out subjects and curriculum for each year. In the left side column there is room to track the subjects and then plan out what you will use from 6th grade through 12th grade. Be sure to keep track of what you already have on hand – and don’t need to purchase!

High School Outline, Requirements, and Schedules

high school daily schedule and requirements

This section allows you to plug in all the information that your state may require for graduation, AP placement, decide your grading scale, and brainstorm elective ideas for your child. There is also a sheet that can be printed off yearly to create a weekly schedule for your child.

Tracking High School Credits

credit and class tracking for high school

Keep track of the credits your child is earning, books read, extra curricular activities and other important information you might need for high school transcripts. There are five pages for this section: one for early credits (prior to 9th grade if your state allows it) and four pages, one for each year of high school.

Course Descriptions

Early and high school course description tracking

This section allows you write a short course description of each class that your child takes for credit (may come in handy for college admission later).

Honestly, this whole high school thing is tricky! Thanks again!

High school brought up all those feelings of inadequacy in me – so didn’t see that coming! It is such a new ballgame, but I am so thankful to have friends walking along with me. :) It definitely helps to have encouragement and support!

Thank you so much for these forms. They are well thought out. For a cost is it possible to offer an editable version? I would like my final draft to be neater than my chicken scratch. Have you come up with a transcript form, not that you have to offer, just checking to see if you tackled that beast yet.

Thank you! It will be very helpful! God bless you!

Glad to hear that, Sarah!! I hope it is! :)

New £64 million plan to help people stay in work

‘WorkWell’ pilots to provide tailored support for people in their local area so people can stay and progress in work.

homework planning page

  • 15 areas including Greater Manchester, South Yorkshire, and Cornwall to become part of new £64 million pilot to deliver joined-up work and health support
  • Builds on welfare reform package to tackle inactivity as fit note process to be integrated with WorkWell

A new work and health support service will be rolled out across 15 areas of England as part of the Government’s plan to help people with health conditions back to work, the Work and Pensions Secretary has confirmed today (Tuesday 7 May).

The WorkWell pilots – launched by the Department for Work and Pensions ( DWP ) and the Department for Health and Social Care ( DHSC ) – will connect 59,000 people from October to local support services including physiotherapy and counselling so they can get the tailored help they need to stay in or return to work.

It comes after the Prime Minister announced a sweeping package of welfare reforms to modernise the benefit system and help thousands more people into work, including a review of fit notes to consider how to relieve pressure on GPs and deliver personalised work and health plans that prevent people from falling out of work and onto long-term sickness benefits.

The WorkWell service provides a single, joined-up assessment and gateway into both employment support and health services locally to help people manage their conditions and to identify workplace adjustments or support that would enable them to stay in work or return sooner.

Participants do not need to be claiming any Government benefits and will receive personalised support from a Work and Health Coach to understand their current health and social barriers to work and draw up a plan to help them overcome them. Evidence shows that work is an effective way to improve wellbeing – reducing the risk of depression, improving physical health, and building self-confidence and financial independence.

Work and Pensions Secretary, Mel Stride MP, said:

We are rolling out the next generation of welfare reforms so that thousands more people can gain all the benefits work brings.
Too many today are falling out of work in a spiral of sickness that harms their finances, their prospects and ultimately their health, where with the right workplace adjustments and help, this needn’t be the case.
And so we have designed WorkWell, a groundbreaking new service, that will for the first time integrate health and work advice at the local level, as part of our plan to stem the flow into economic inactivity, grow the economy, and change lives for the better.

Health and Social Care Secretary, Victoria Atkins MP, said:

Too often, people with disabilities or poor health fall out of work with no support.
We have a plan to change that and improve lives so everyone has the opportunity to find fulfilling work. This service will help tens of thousands of people, who will receive joined-up work and health support, tailored to their individual needs.
This service, alongside a faster, simpler and fairer health service, will build a healthier workforce, and a stronger economy.

WorkWell is for anyone with a health condition or disability, including mental health conditions, who wants to work. It is a voluntary service, so people will be able to self-refer, or may be referred to WorkWell through their GP, employer or the community sector.

These professionals will also provide advice on workplace adjustments, such as flexible working or adaptive technology, facilitate conversations with employers on health needs, and provide access to local services such as physiotherapy, employment advice and counselling.

Matthew Taylor, chief executive of the NHS Confederation, said:

It is fantastic that 15 ICSs can now start to get their WorkWell plans off the ground to provide more intensive, early-intervention support to their populations.
ICS leaders know that with the right support, people living with poor health and long-term conditions can find that good quality work helps prevent them from becoming more unwell. This helps people to live a fuller life, which in turn reduces pressure on health services.

It comes as latest figures show there are currently 2.8 million people who are ‘economically inactive’ due to long-term sickness, a near-record high. The fit note process is often the first step to someone falling out of work and into inactivity and data recently published by the NHS shows almost 11 million fit notes were issued last year, with an overwhelming 94% of those signed “not fit for work”.

A large proportion of these are repeat fit notes which are issued without any advice, resulting in a missed opportunity to help people get the appropriate support they may need to remain in work.

To address this, the Prime Minister announced a review of the fit note system to stop people being written off as “not fit for work” by default and instead design a new system where each fit note conversation focuses on what people can do with the right support in place, rather than what they can’t do.

As part of the call for evidence, we are also testing reforms of the fit note process to integrate it more closely with WorkWell, enabling the people who need it to have a work and health conversation, with a single, joined-up assessment and gateway into local employment support services.

Some WorkWell pilots are in areas of the country with some of the highest number of fit notes issued, like Greater Manchester and the Black Country where a combined total of over one million fit notes were issued last year.

We are also rolling out “fit note trailblazers” in some of the WorkWell pilot areas to ensure people who request a fit note have a work and health conversation and are signposted to local employment support services so they can remain in work. The trailblazers will trial better ways of triaging, signposting, and supporting people looking to receive a fit note and will be used to test a transformed process to help prevent people with long term health conditions falling out of work, including referral to support through their local WorkWell service.

This builds on the record £16 billion worth of mental health support we offered last year, as well an extra 384,000 people accessing NHS Talking Therapies as part of the Government’s £2.5 billion Back to Work Plan. We are delivering the largest expansion in mental health services in a generation with almost £5 billion of extra funding over the past 5 years, and a near doubling of mental health training places to help cut waiting lists.

Covering a third of Integrated Care Boards across England, the success of the pilot will inform the possible future rollout of a national WorkWell service dedicated to stemming the flow of people falling out of work due to ill health where the right adjustments and support could prevent this.

This is a key part of the Government’s £2.5 billion Back to Work Plan, to help up to 1.1 million people with long-term health conditions, disabilities and long-term unemployment to look for and stay in work. In addition to reforming the fit note process and expanding NHS Talking Therapies, the Back to Work Plan includes the launch of Universal Support to match 100,000 people to job vacancies, and expanding the Restart scheme to give people the skills they need to progress.

The Government’s wide-ranging welfare reforms also include changes to the Work Capability Assessment which are expected to reduce the number of people put onto the highest tier of incapacity benefits by 424,000 by 2028/29 - people who will now receive personalised support to prepare for work, while our Chance to Work Guarantee will mean people can try work without fear of losing their benefits.

There is a near record level of people on company payrolls, up by over 200,000 since last year, wages have risen for nine months in a row, and economic inactivity is still lower than in the US, France and Italy.

The rollout of Universal Credit will also be accelerated to move all those left on outdated legacy systems onto a simpler, more dynamic benefit system which eliminates a binary choice between work and welfare. And we will change the rules so that over 180,000 Universal Credit claimants will be given more frequent access to the expertise and guidance of work coaches, as a result of laying regulations to increase the Administrative Earnings Threshold.

Further Information

WorkWell pilots will take place within the following areas:

  • Birmingham and Solihull
  • Black Country
  • Bristol, North Somerset and South Gloucestershire
  • Cambridgeshire and Peterborough
  • Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly
  •  Coventry and Warwickshire
  • Herefordshire and Worcestershire
  • Greater Manchester
  • Lancashire and South Cumbria
  • Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland
  • North Central London
  • North West London
  • South Yorkshire
  • Surrey Heartlands

Each of the 15 WorkWell pilots will decide the exact support to be made available that’s best suited to the needs of their local area.

The total number of Fit Notes issued in each area last year:

An example WorkWell user journey:

  • The user is employed but their chronic back pain and depression means that they have been signed off work and are considering stopping altogether, leaving them financially vulnerable.
  • They are referred to WorkWell by their GP, employer, or local service.
  • They meet with a Work and Health Coach for a work and health assessment to understand their health and social barriers to work and develop a plan to overcome them.
  • They are signposted to in-house WorkWell services – four sessions with a physiotherapist, a meeting with a counsellor, and a meeting with a Human Resource Advisor for employment advice.
  • Their plan also includes referrals to other relevant local services that will enable them to overcome their barriers to work. This includes training opportunities to help them explore new career opportunities; social prescription to a support group tackling loneliness; and speaking to Citizens Advice Bureau for financial advice.
  • Thanks to their plan, they can remain in work and continue to meet with their WorkWell Work and Health Coach, who checks in on their progress and offers further work and health advice as needed.

‘Time, Patience, Cold Blood’: Mexico Prepares for a Potential Trump Win

Mexican officials and aides are planning for a drastic shift in U.S. relations should Donald Trump win in November.

  • Share full article

Presidents Donald Trump and Andrés Manuel López Obrador standing side by side in suits outside on the White House veranda.

By Natalie Kitroeff

Reporting from Mexico City

They’re studying his interviews, bracing for mass deportations and preparing policy proposals to bring to the negotiating table.

As Mexico heads toward its presidential election next month, government officials and campaign aides are also girding for a different vote: one in the United States that could return Donald Trump to the presidency.

The last time Mr. Trump took office, his win surprised many of America’s allies, and his threat-filled diplomacy forced them to adapt on the go. Now, they have time to anticipate how Mr. Trump’s victory would transform relations that President Biden has tried to normalize — and they’re furiously preparing for an upheaval.

For some, the memory of negotiating with Mr. Trump the last time he was in office, when he used extreme threats against Mexico, looms large.

What it took to reach a deal with Mr. Trump’s team back then? “Time, patience, cold blood,” the former Mexican foreign minister Marcelo Ebrard said in an interview. “You can win, if you understand this. It’s not easy.”

In Mexico, officials say that working with Mr. Trump could be even harder this time around. The former president has promised “the largest deportation operation in American history,” floated the idea of 100 percent tariffs on Chinese cars made in Mexico and vowed to deploy U.S. Special Forces to , as he put it, “wage war on the cartels.”

Behind the scenes, the Mexican government is talking to people close to the Trump campaign about proposals such as the former president’s threat of a “universal tariff” on all imported goods, and working to resolve trade disagreements before the U.S. election, according to a senior Mexican official who was not authorized to speak publicly.

The goal, the official said, is to leave the future Mexican administration as equipped as possible to engage with Mr. Trump.

President Andrés Manuel López Obrador of Mexico forged a close working relationship with Mr. Trump in the early years of his administration, despite Mr. Trump’s repeated threats to impose tariffs on Mexico and make the country pay for a border wall.

But Mr. López Obrador is stepping down once his term ends after presidential elections in June, in which polls give a significant advantage to his protégé, Claudia Sheinbaum, the former mayor of Mexico City.

The unwritten rules of Mr. López Obrador’s relationship with Mr. Trump were that Mexico did as much as it could on migration, and the White House let him pursue his domestic priorities without meddling. That seemed to work for both men.

The Mexican leader has praised Mr. Trump for respecting Mexican sovereignty . Mr. Trump, in turn, has called the Mexican leader “a friend” and “a great president.”

But it’s unclear how Mr. Trump would engage with either of the top two presidential candidates.

“With either President Trump or President Biden we’re going to have good relations,” Ms. Sheinbaum said in an interview. “We’re always going to defend Mexico and Mexicans in the U.S. — and we want an equal relationship.”

Xóchitl Gálvez, the top opposition candidate, said she, too, could work with either man as president.

“Obviously I would prefer to work with a respectful and courteous gentleman like Joe Biden,” Ms. Gálvez told The New York Times. “But in my professional and political life I have dealt with all types of masculinity,” she said. “It wouldn’t be the first time I confronted a character with complicated masculinity, so I could work perfectly well with Trump.”

Campaign aides are drawing up plans for either outcome.

“I’m not worried, but we’re going to be prepared,” said Juan Ramón de la Fuente, a member of Ms. Sheinbaum’s team, referring to a potential Trump win. “We are preparing for both scenarios.”

On migration, “we need to be more effective in decreasing irregular crossings,” said Mr. de la Fuente, who recently served as Mexico’s ambassador to the United Nations and is seen as a potential pick for foreign minister in a possible Sheinbaum administration.

But he also pointed out that American laws work as “a not very healthy incentive” that help drive migration, “because the moment you touch the land, you are a candidate for asylum.”

Some officials in Mexico see the country as having more leverage in its dealings with the United States than in the past. The White House has relied heavily on Mr. López Obrador to slow migration at the U.S. southern border , and that cooperation has given Mexico significant influence over one of the most important issues in American politics.

“In structural terms, Mexico is gaining more power in regard to the United States,” Mr. Ebrard said. The Mexican economy has performed relatively well in recent years, and its factories have become an attractive alternative to China for the United States.

As Mexico, “any administration in the States needs you for their migration policy,” he said. “The geopolitical tension is working in certain ways for a stronger Mexico.”

Mr. Ebrard, who is part of Ms. Sheinbaum’s campaign and seen as a possible cabinet member if she wins, led negotiations with Mr. Trump’s advisers while he was in office.

On trade, “their priority was the labor reform, the increase in the wages in Mexico,” said Mr. Ebrard. That was palatable for Mexico, since the López Obrador administration had campaigned on a leftist platform and was committed to raising Mexican salaries.

On migration, the real ask was much harder to satisfy. Mr. Trump wanted “a dramatic reduction,” in border crossings, Mr. Ebrard said, but didn’t agree with Mexico about investing in ways to tackle the causes that drive people to migrate.

Still, Mexico was able to push the administration to recognize its point of view, he said.

In December 2018, the Trump administration joined an effort led by Mexico and committed billions of dollars in private and public investments to Central America — though months later the former president moved to cut off all aid to the region in response to migrant caravans.

The Mexican government has been criticized for getting too little in return for agreeing to accept tens of thousands of returned asylum seekers under the Trump-era “Remain in Mexico” policy. But the administration also had clear wins, including the renegotiation of the free trade agreement with the United States and Canada.

Ms. Gálvez argued that the government missed an opportunity to secure more rights for undocumented Mexicans in the United States and protect migrants stuck in Mexico, but she also praised the trade deal.

“In that sense, Mexico won, won a lot with Trump,” Ms. Gálvez said, adding that Mr. Trump never actually imposed the tariffs he threatened. “It didn’t turn out so badly.”
