History Personal Statement Example 2 I am captivated by the diversity and depth offered by a History degree; attracted by the way it encourages us to be analytical of the values and patterns of past societies. It was in my final year of secondary school that I was awarded the History Attainment Award, although my desire to study History dates back to an earlier age when I visited the site of the allied landings in Normandy at just eleven years old...

Psychology Personal Statement Example 2 Psychology surrounds us. I often observe my class mates and ask myself why they are so different, struggling with attention or eating disorders. While looking for reasons, I also want to find ways to help them and I am confident that psychology will give me the means to do so...

Computer Science Personal Statement Example 4 I find it amazing to watch as the digital revolution sculpts society at a rate that has never before been seen; there is so much to still be discovered. Quantum computing is a topic that particularly interests me, stemming from my studies and keen interest in physics...

French and Arabic Personal Statement Example In studying French and Arabic, I am eager to compare two mutually influential languages and cultures, particularly their overlapping history and its cultural representations. I decided to defer my entry to retake my Maths A2 and plan to turn this to my advantage by working and living in France, putting what I've already learnt of the French language and culture into practice...

Physics Personal Statement Example 4 The elegance of the scientific subjects, in particular physics is what has established my eagerness for a deeper insight into the subject. What sets physics apart from the other sciences, in my opinion, is that it can be practically applied to all instances of life...

Maths and Spanish Personal Statement Example For as long as I have recognised words and numbers, I have seen a connection between the two. As I progressed in the AS Mathematics course I realised how drawn I was to the subject, motivating me to spend 2 weeks at school over the summer holidays learning 2 entire AS Further Maths modules, in order to take the full A-level course in one year...

Languages Personal Statement Example 10 At the age of eight, a friend introduced me to Guy Hamilton's 1969 film 'Battle of Britain'. This instilled in me two things: my doomed childhood ambition to be a Spitfire pilot, long since grudgingly abandoned, but also, perhaps ironically, a love for the sound and feel of the German language that has stayed with me all through the intervening decade...

English Personal Statement Example (Mature Student) Having worked on a secure psychiatric unit for two years, caring for many people unable to or precluded from following their dreams due to mental illness, as well as over a decade employed in positions just to pay the bills, I am finally pursuing my dream of becoming a published novelist...

Biomedical Science Personal Statement Example 5 Venturing into the unknown and never-ending world of science and medicine has been a passion and desire of mine for the majority of my life. I am captivated by how a simple idea can be transformed into a reality that can pave the way for new cures and more advanced anatomical understanding...

Physics Personal Statement Example 5 With philosophy at its foundation, and mathematics as its language, physics is full of profound insights into the workings of the universe, from the tiniest quantum interactions to the forming of the most distant galaxies...

Geography Personal Statement Example 2 In a dynamic world, the study of geography is increasingly important. The diversity of the subject and the interaction between the physical environment and human population is becoming even more evident with climate change and globalisation influencing our everyday lives...

Biochemistry Personal Statement Example 1 The need to survive is a remarkable thing, for it has allowed evolution to equip organisms with a range of extraordinary capabilities in order to stay alive. Since reading 'Why Geese Don't Get Obese' by Widmaier, my interests have developed in the molecular adaptations of animals; for example, the antifreeze protein that prevents the blood of Antarctic Notothenioid fishes from turning into ice...

Maths Personal Statement Example 4 What I love about maths is that it has no limits. It fascinates me: the formulae, the theorems, the logic. My original interest in the subject was triggered several years ago when I started discussing maths and physics with my dad...

German and English Literature Personal Statement Example Email correspondence with a friend in Berlin during the celebrations of the twentieth anniversary of the German reunification gave me an insight into the importance and relevance of Germany’s past both within the country itself, and throughout Europe...

Biology Personal Statement Example 8 My interest in Biology started at a very young age due to spending a lot of time outdoors. I am intrigued by the functioning of living organisms and how they are all linked; one small change in one species will affect a whole range of others...

Physics & Astrophysics Personal Statement Example I have always considered Physics to be a captivating area of study, whether it is a question of how aspects of it work, or indeed why they work. As such, I have found deep fascination in studying Physics, as it is able to provide answers (as well as evidence) to such queries...

Physics Personal Statement Example (International Student) 1 Some people believe there is no universal key to the mysteries of the world, but I am convinced otherwise. Since early childhood when my parents, both physicists by training, patiently answered all my why-questions and encouraged me in my fascination with astronomy, I have been thinking of Physics as the perfect science that can unveil all the secrets that fascinate humanity...

Economics and Politics/Geography Personal Statement Example My desire to study Economics in combination with the Social Sciences stems primarily from my interest in these fields but also from the fact that these two disciplines compliment each other exceptionally well...

Anthropology and Archaeology Personal Statement Example My interest in culture first started when I began to attend my local Hindu Temple with my friend in primary school. I was highly interested in how her surroundings differed from my own and enjoyed immersing myself in her way of life...

Law Personal Statement Example 11 My desire to study law at university is firmly rooted in my interest in world events and also with helping others. Law effects our everyday lives almost without us noticing. If we look at the news, there is always an aspect of law up for debate...

English and Philosophy Personal Statement Example English has always been at the forefront of my mind, whether it be writing storybooks as a child, play-writing as a teen, or analysing literature at A Level. I enjoy the thrill of writing creatively but equally enjoy composing non-literary pieces where I can put across my views, inform or debate...

Maths and Science Personal Statement Example Maths and science, in particular physics, have always been my favourite subjects in school. I have an inquisitive mind and am always asking "how?" and "why?" to find out how things work. I chose maths, physics and biology for my A levels, yet only realised I wanted to do engineering when I started studying topics such as mechanics...

History (Ancient and Modern) Personal Statement Example 1 It is those things we don’t yet know or understand that make history a fascinating, intellectual puzzle. We know a remarkable amount about history and the development of society but new archaeological discoveries, the dedicated efforts of historians, translators and other academics and advancements in areas such as archaeometry mean that the body of historical information is still expanding...

Creative Writing Personal Statement Example 2 To me, fiction is like the magic carpet of Aladdin. It takes me to travel through time and space and explore the slices of human experience. In the wonderful trips, I am guided by the author and accompanied by the characters...

History and English Personal Statement Example Studying history and English concurrently has appealed to me ever since I recognised the inseparability of the two disciplines closest to my heart. Personally, I believe that the literary style of a piece of writing is as important as scholarly research and I try to make my essays as lively as possible whilst still grounded in solid historical or literary method, dulce et utile, following the example of writers such as Richard J Evans...

History Personal Statement Example 37 My interest in history lies in the simple fact that I have always been fascinated by the past. At eleven I won a full academic bursary to attend my current school. This was a way into a community in which my intellectual curiosity would be valued and where I could further my enthusiasm for history...

German Personal Statement Example 7 The study of language has always been appealing and is the focus of much of my time and energy, but the study of the German language is what mesmerises me most. Before understanding German I was first intrigued by its sound, and as I began to learn it, I became fascinated by its complexity...

Economics Personal Statement Example 28 While working in the stock broker I became 100% sure that I wanted to study Economics at university. I gained employment at a Stock Broker office as a Monitor Operator in Bangladesh and my duty was to monitor the daily price list of trading of shares at the beginning of the day and then preparing trading reports at the end...

Chemistry Personal Statement Example 17 The realisation I wanted to study Chemistry at degree level came with my growing appreciation of its contribution and significance in shaping modern society, coupled with an increasing interest in the subject as my knowledge and understanding have developed...

History Personal Statement Example 40 History has always fascinated me because of what it can tell us about humanity; the decisions taken, the actions chosen and the mistakes made can all make us reflect on what it means to be human. I firmly believe history is not simply a case of learning facts and dates but rather a chance to analyse the past, enhancing our understanding of how we interact with each other today...

Psychology Personal Statement Example 64 Psychology is ubiquitous in society. Because of the mercurial nature of humans, there is always something different to study and analyse. I find this exciting. Part of what draws me to psychology is how the dynamics of it affect daily life and behaviour...

History Personal Statement Example 43 I have always wanted to be part of an open-minded society and live in a country where originality is rewarded, so the UK came to my mind as being the best country to read my degree. My passion for the English language has developed over years of studying English at school, where I have been successful in every written and oral exam...

English Personal Statement Example 30 English is not simply the study of humanity, or society, or history or the written word; it is all of those together and it is this versatility that makes it so appealing to me. The link between literary criticism and psychoanalysis is a great interest of mine...

PPE/Politics and Economics Personal Statement Example 1 I have a strong interest in the close relationship between political events and economic developments, highlighted by a study of Russia in the lead up to the 1917 revolution. I was grabbed by the film adaptation of Ten Days That Shook the World, with its emphasis on its power of the masses...

Psychology Personal Statement Example 68 For me human beings have always been fascinating, and even mysterious, because, though we are all humans, we all think differently and behave so differently. I wonder why those impoverished people who live with little can have a happy life, whereas some millionaires who have status, reputation and money choose to commit suicide...

Archaeology Personal Statement Example 6 I have always enjoyed learning about different cultures and civilisations, reflected in my enduring love of history, and more recently, archaeology. Compared to modern history, archaeology carries a sense of enigma which makes it much more stimulating for an imaginative and inquisitive mind...

English Literature Personal Statement Example 20 I was once told by a writer at Bath "LitFest" that literature is "all about control". At a young age, his words seemed obscure, but years later, I am finally able to grasp his meaning. On one side of a barrier of ink and paper, a writer aims to understand and control their world, whilst a reader attempts to lose control in a boundless, imaginary world...

Sociology Personal Statement Example 12 A Gospel choir tour around South Africa was the catalyst for my fascination with human culture. As I travelled I was able to directly experience a multiplicity of cultures even within this one country...

Politics and International Relations Personal Statement Example 11 Throughout my life, I have been fascinated but also deeply fearful of the power that politicians around the world possess. Having grown up in the years following Lithuania's departure from the Soviet Union and joining the European Union, I have observed how imperative it is that political decisions should be made responsibly...

Geography Personal Statement Example 19 I could say that my love of Geography started in school, but in fact holidays to foreign lands have had a more significant impact on me. From the volcanic badlands of Lanzarote's Timanfaya, to the unique beauty of Ngorongoro crater in Tanzania, Geography and its impact on nature and human development have awed me...

Biological Sciences Personal Statement Example 3 When I was in primary school I would take pens apart to put them back together, so that I could see how every small piece fits together to create a whole working object, and as I furthered my education my focus shifted to the w orld around me...

Politics, Philosophy & Economics (PPE) Personal Statement Example 3 In this day and age virtually every aspect of our lives may be considered political. My passion to study Politics stems from this tenet and a belief that a comprehension of Politics is integral to understanding the current state of humanity...

Ancient and Modern History Personal Statement Example 1 What makes history engaging and interesting to me is its interdisciplinary nature and its ability to take you on a journey to the discovery of humanity's past. History has been a constant source of captivation for me, from studying the mythology of Ancient Greece in primary school through to the study of the Russian Revolution at A Level...

History Personal Statement Example (Oxbridge) 2 Whether considering the real world applications of Bentham's utilitarianism in Religious Studies, analysing the context of a changing Victorian society in English Literature, or debating the evolving ideology of the Labour Party in Politics, there is one common thread connecting what I enjoy most about my studies: history...

Sociology Personal Statement Example 14 The need for the study of Sociology in society is, arguably, universally fundamental. The study of society is of paramount importance in solving social problems of great magnitude such as poverty and family disorganisation...

Computer Science Personal Statement Example 58 I could tell you why am interested in computer science until the cows come home, but to give you the fundamentals I would so passionately tell you that this course is one of the few disciplines which truly embodies the days of tomorrow...

The LLM dissertation may be up to 10,000 words (equivalent to 60 UCU). Students presenting a dissertation are required to submit it by 15 September of the year following entry.
  • No syllabus as such is appropriate for this module. [See Appendix A - Extract from the current LLM Handbook. • A definite topic for a dissertation and provisional title indicating the precise subject matter and scope thereof, shall be submitted by the end of Michaelmas Term.
  • The Chair of the Board of Studies shall formally approve the topic of dissertation and appoint a supervisor.

  • to evaluate critically and work from those materials to arrive at a clear and defensible opinion on the issues;

Key Skills:

  • the ability to exercise the above skills independently (with some supervision) on a substantial project requiring work over the academic year.
  • to communicate their knowledge and argument in writing with clarity and confidence in a substantial dissertation;

  • Every supervisor shall meet with their supervisee to agree the structure of the dissertation and to approve the bibliography.
  • The candidate may meet the supervisor from time to time at the discretion of the latter.

  • (iv) to indicate appropriate legal sources and materials;
  • (v) to resolve particular difficulties encountered by the candidate;
  • (vi) to offer editorial comments on the dissertation.
  • The candidate shall assume full responsibility for the progress and completion of the dissertation within the stipulated time limit set by the Department, namely 15 September in the year following admission to the course.

Duke’s location in Durham, a student-friendly environment with a modest cost of living, was significant in making my choice compared to the other schools that offered me admission. I completely enjoyed the intellectual property law class by Professor James Boyle, which was the most intellectually stimulating in my academic experience. The IP classes and exams were amazing as they addressed contemporary issues and thought-provoking IP law and technology realities relevant to practicing as an attorney in this rapidly evolving digital age.

Entrepreneurship

Environmental and energy, ip, science and technology, new ventures and entrepreneurship certificate.

Duke Law School has long been known for the breath of its research, scholarship, and teaching at the intersection of innovation, entrepreneurship, and business law. Lawyers serving clients and companies can be counselors, policy advocates, entrepreneurs, or corporate leaders, or sometimes all at once. Whatever their role, they require a comprehensive understanding of multiple areas of law and policy — business, intellectual property, and privacy law, to name a few — as well as practical legal skills such as contract drafting, corporate counseling and communication, negotiation, and deal skills. The New Ventures and Entrepreneurship Certificate capitalizes on the strengths of the Duke Law Curriculum in all these areas and prepares students for careers in the technology, science, and innovation sectors of the global economy.

Applications:

Applicants for the New Ventures and Entrepreneurship Certificate should have the following qualifications:

  • a strong academic record;
  • strong English language skills; and
  • preference for two years of post-graduate work experience in business law or related fields.

Applicants to the certificate program should submit with their LLM application a statement of interest in the New Ventures and Entrepreneurship Certificate. The statement should describe their background and goals for their career. If applicants’ personal statements include a full description of their interest in the certificate, it would nevertheless be helpful to the committee to have a separate statement containing the portion of the personal statement that describes that interest. A limited number of applicants will be admitted as candidates to the certificate program each year.

Program Requirements

In order to receive the Certificate in New Ventures and Entrepreneurship, candidates must successfully complete the following requirements:

  • 24 credits in law, with a 2.5 minimum grade point average;
  • a substantial research paper on a topic related to the substance of the certificate program
  • a total of 12 academic credits in the following courses:
  • Business Associations
  • Startup Law: Legal Considerations for Entrepreneurs and Counsel
  • Business Strategy for Lawyers
  • Intellectual Property
  • Patent Law and Policy
  • Corporate Finance
  • Bankruptcy and Corporate Reorganization
  • Corporate Taxation
  • Venture Capital Financing (3 credits)
  • Structuring Venture Capital and Private Equity Transactions
  • Internet and Telecommunications Regulation
  • Partnership Taxation
  • Securities Regulation
  • Sports and the Law
  • The Law and Policy of Innovation: The Life Sciences
  • Corporate Governance
  • Federal Income Tax
  • Frontier AI & Robotics: Law & Ethics
  • Introduction to Privacy Law and Policy
  • Artificial Intelligence Law and Policy
  • Legal Issues of Cybersecurity and Data Breach Response
  • Corporate Counseling and Communication
  • Financial Valuation

Core courses not taken by the student to fulfill the requirements of subsection (a) can count as electives for the purposes of meeting the requirements of subsection (b).

  • An off-campus externship that is thematically connected to the certificate’s subject matter, or
  • Enroll in either the Start-Up Ventures or Community Enterprise Clinic, or
  • Negotiation for Lawyers
  • Contract Drafting
  • Contract Drafting for the Finance Lawyer
  • Deal Skills for Transactional Lawyer
  • Practicing Law with AI and Big Data
  • Three of the 12 credits may be obtained from courses offered by the Fuqua School of Business or the Sanford School of Public Policy that are thematically connected to the certificate’s subject matter.

Please note that enrollment in the Certificate does not guarantee enrollment in one or more of the foregoing courses; students will have the opportunity to drop the certificate before LLM graduation without penalty in the event they are not able to fulfill the academic requirements of the Certificate.

For more information, please contact Oleg Kobelev , Associate Dean for International Studies.

Environmental and Energy Law Certificate

Duke University is one of the country’s leading research universities in the field of environmental studies, and this certificate provides LLM students an opportunity to study environmental law and policy with outstanding scholars and teachers across the university. Through our partnership with the Nicholas Institute for Environmental Policy Solutions and other interdisciplinary programs, Duke prepares students for careers as lawyers and policy-makers in a world facing increasing pressure on natural resources and the environment.

Applications

Student Good Guide

The best UK online resource for students

Law Personal Statement Example

I hope this personal statement example for the LLB Law course and LLM will help as a motivation and inspiration to work on your university application. You can use this example as a guide to writing a personal statement for any university in the UK – Oxford , Cambridge , UCL, LSE, KCL etc.

As a child, I was fascinated by the stories my grandfather would tell me about his work as a lawyer. I was captivated by the idea of using logic and reasoning to solve complex problems and help people in need. As I grew older, my interest in the law continued to develop, and I began to explore the different areas of law and the ways in which they intersect with society.

During my high school years, I took advantage of every opportunity to learn more about law, including participating in mock trials, attending workshops and seminars, and conducting independent research. I also volunteered with a local legal aid clinic, where I gained practical experience and saw the law’s impact on people’s lives.

In college, I decided to major in political science and legal studies. I have been able to build on my earlier experiences and deepen my knowledge and understanding of the law. I have also been able to gain practical experience through internships and research opportunities, and I have developed strong critical thinking and problem-solving skills.

I am excited to take the next step in my journey and apply to a law program. I believe that a law degree will provide me with the knowledge and skills I need to pursue a successful career in law. I am eager to learn from experienced practitioners and engage in meaningful work that makes a difference in people’s lives. I am confident that I have the passion, dedication, and abilities to excel in a law program and make a valuable contribution to the field.

LLM Application Requirements

Charney Hall

Now accepting applications for Fall 2022.

  • Degree Programs Offered

Santa Clara Law offers the following LLM degree programs:

  • LLM in Intellectual Property
  • LLM in International and Comparative Law
  • LLM in United States Law (with optional specializations in one of the following: Intellectual Property, International and Comparative Law, and Human Rights Law)

Requirements for LLM in Intellectual Property and LLM in International and Comparative Law:

We welcome applicants who have either

  • A degree in law from a law school approved by the American Bar Association, or
  • Graduated in the upper one half of their class, and
  • Admitted to practice law in any United States jurisdiction.

Requirements for LLM in United States Law:

The LLM in US Law can be either for General Studies or with specialization in Intellectual Property, International and Comparative Law, or Human Rights Law.

We welcome applicants who have a degree in law from an institution outside of the United States that is accredited by the appropriate authority in that country. Additionally, applicants must have either:

  • Graduated in the upper one half of their law-school class, or
  • Demonstrated above average or superior academic performance, or, alternatively, work experience, post graduate education, or standardized test, which demonstrate the ability to undertake advanced legal studies.

For more information, please visit our LLM Programs for International Students page.

  • Application Requirements
  • Application. Applications must be submitted electronically, either through LSAC’s website or by clicking the “Apply Now” link on this page.(More information about submitting your application electronically can be found at www.lsac.org .)
  • Official transcripts for all undergraduate, graduate, and professional academic programs attended. If your degree is from outside the United States, you must also include a course-by-course credential evaluation verifying your degree is the equivalent of a first degree in law. We strongly recommend you use LSAC’s Document Assembly Service (LLM CAS) to do this. Transcripts representing the primary degree in law school must indicate specifically that the degree has been conferred and the date that the degree has been conferred. Important information about transcripts: Applicants may apply to the LLM program at Santa Clara Law School while their primary degree in law is in progress and may submit a transcript that is not complete. If admitted to the program, these applicants must submit another official transcript, reflecting that the primary degree in law has been completed and a degree has been conferred. A transcript is deemed “official” if it is sent directly to Santa Clara Law School in a sealed envelope directly from the degree-granting institution. An applicant may obtain an official transcript from his/her degree granting institution only if the transcript is given to the applicant in a sealed envelope from the institution. The applicant may not handle the transcript outside of its sealed envelope. Alternatively, LLM applicants may use LSAC’s Credential Assembly Service (CAS) to submit all academic transcripts.
  • Personal Statement. The Personal Statement is a short essay where the applicant may introduce him/herself to the admissions committee and describe the reasons why he/she is pursuing the LLM degree at Santa Clara Law School.
  • Letters of Recommendation . Though not required, letters of recommendation are strongly recommended. Letters may be sent to LSAC for inclusion in your CAS report. We will accept up to 3 letters.
  • $75 Application Fee . We have waived the application fee for the 2022-2023 application.
  • Official TOEFL or IELTS scores (for non-native English speakers only) – We require the TOEFL or IELTS score for all international students. We must receive either the official score report (not a photocopy) or the score must be included with LSAC’s CAS report. Scores submitted within two years of taking the exam are acceptable.

NOTE: The School of Law uses email as a primary form of communicating important information. It is the applicant’s responsibility to keep the university informed of any email/mailing address/phone number changes.

  • Application Deadlines
  • Fall Admission (Classes begin in August): May 1
  • New F1 Visa applicants: November 1
  • Current F1 Visa holders: November 1
  • Applicants not requiring a visa: December 1

REMINDER: Applications and all required supporting documentation must be received by the deadline.

LL.M. Admissions

Gather information on how to apply to the LL.M. Program, admissions requirements (e.g. transcripts, English proficiency, recommendations), and more.

UCLA School of Law has a global reputation for excellence. The LL.M. Program offers students the combination of an outstanding educational program at a world-class university with the opportunity to live in one of the most dynamic, beautiful, and diverse cities in the United States. The application for admission to the 2024-2025 LL.M. Program is now closed. The application for admission to the 2025-2026 LL.M. Program will open in early September 2024 and the deadline to apply will be  February 1, 2025 .

Creating Your Online Application

To apply for admission to the UCLA Law LL.M. Program, prospective applicants must submit an application and supporting documents through the Law School Admission Council (LSAC) LL.M. Credential Assembly Service (CAS) Document Assembly Service. If you have not already done so, please create an LSAC LL.M. CAS account by visiting  http://llm.lsac.org/login/signup.aspx . Creating an account requires a one-time fee of $85. As a courtesy and to help applicants offset this cost, we have waived UCLA's separate $85 application fee for all applicants to our LL.M. Program.

After establishing your LSAC account, you may begin your application to the UCLA Law LL.M. Program by visiting  https://llm.lsac.org/login/access.aspx?appl=4837L1  during our application period of September through February. As you fill out your application and compile your supporting documents, please carefully follow  LSAC's application checklist  to ensure that your application and documents will be processed in a timely manner. (You may begin your application to the LL.M. Program even if you have not yet submitted all of your supporting documents to LSAC.)

LSAC requires an additional fee of $30 for each Document Assembly Service report it generates and transmits to a law school on your behalf. If you have created your LSAC account but not yet paid the $30 fee to have your report transmitted to UCLA, please pay the fee to ensure that we will receive your application and documents.

Please note that applicants are not required to register for the LSAC CAS LL.M. International Transcript Authentication and Evaluation service, which requires an additional fee of $135. (Only the $85 fee for creating your Document Assembly Service account and the $30 fee to send your report to UCLA are required.) Nonetheless, you are welcome to register for the evaluation service. Doing so may result in faster processing of your application and a faster announcement of our program's admission decision.

Domestic applicants: Please note that LSAC's LL.M. Credential Assembly Service is separate from the LSAC service through which you previously applied to J.D. programs. As a result, you must create a new LSAC LL.M. account by following the instructions above. As LSAC does not enable applicants to link their LL.M. account to their previous J.D. account, we ask that you please submit your undergraduate transcripts, law school transcripts and letters of recommendation to the LSAC LL.M. Credential Assembly Service so that the documents will be transmitted to UCLA.

Application Deadline: Please submit your application and supporting documents (items 1-5 in the section below) to LSAC no later than February 1 .

Submitting Your Supporting Documents

After creating your LSAC account and beginning your online application, please submit the following supporting documents to LSAC:

A standard résumé listing your academic qualifications and relevant work experience is required. You may submit a more detailed curriculum vitae if you wish. When completing your online application through LSAC, please follow the instructions to attach an electronic copy of your résumé to your application.

An important aspect of the application is the personal statement, in which applicants describe their objectives in pursuing graduate legal studies at UCLA School of Law. Discuss any matters relevant to your ability to succeed in law school and the practice of law, and any attributes, experiences, or interests that would enable you to make a distinctive contribution to UCLA and the legal profession. The personal statement should be typed, double-spaced in 12-point font, and should not exceed three pages in length. When completing your online application through LSAC, please follow the instructions to attach an electronic copy of your personal statement to your application.

Applicants must arrange to have transcripts submitted to the LSAC LL.M. CAS Document Assembly Service from all graduate and undergraduate coursework evidencing their completion of a prior degree in law, such as an LL.B. or J.D. Please also submit transcripts for any other subjects in which you have earned an undergraduate or graduate degree. Transcripts should include all courses taken and grades received for university work, and must be translated into English. If your school is unable to provide an English translation of your transcripts, please obtain one from a translation service.

Transcripts must be submitted directly to LSAC by the issuing institution and may not be mailed to UCLA School of Law.  Click here for detailed instructions on submitting your transcripts to LSAC . Applicants need only arrange to have one copy of each transcript sent to LSAC, and LSAC will transmit copies to each law school to which you apply.

If your transcript does not indicate your relative class standing or rank, and such information is available, please have a school official issue a letter or certificate indicating your class standing or rank, and include this notification with the transcripts that are submitted to LSAC.

Applicants must arrange to have two (2) to four (4) letters of recommendation submitted to LSAC from knowledgeable persons who can tell the Graduate Studies Committee about the applicant’s academic qualifications and career interests. The letters are most helpful when the writer can provide the committee with specific firsthand information on your academic and (if applicable) professional capacity and performance. If possible, please include at least one academic reference. While employer references are acceptable, letters from academic sources are viewed more favorably.

You may submit a minimum of two and a maximum of four recommendation letters. Letters must be submitted to LSAC and may not be mailed to UCLA School of Law.  Click here for detailed instructions on submitting your recommendation letters to LSAC . UCLA does not require a separate recommendation letter form.

International applicants who are not native English speakers, or do not hold a law degree from an institution at which the primary language of instruction is English, are required to submit a Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) score. International English Language Testing System (IELTS) scores will also be accepted, but are less desirable.

TOEFL: UCLA School of Law prefers a score of at least 96 on the Internet-based TOEFL, or 600 on the paper-based exam. (There are no score requirements for specific sections of the exam.) Applicants with lower scores are welcome to apply, but are strongly advised to re-take the exam in order to increase their likelihood of admission.

For TOEFL information and registration instructions, visit  https://www.ets.org/toefl . When registering for the exam, please enter institution code 8395 to ensure that your score report will be sent to LSAC. If prompted to enter UCLA's institution code, enter 4837 and department code 03.

IELTS: Favorable consideration will be given to applicants who submit a TOEFL score. However, an overall IELTS score of at least 7.5 will also be viewed favorably. (There are no score requirements for specific sections of the exam.) Applicants with a lower score are strongly advised to take the TOEFL in order to increase their likelihood of admission.

For IELTS information and registration instructions, visit  https://www.ielts.org . When registering for (or at the start of) the exam, please indicate that you wish to have your score forwarded to LSAC for electronic download.

Exemptions: International applicants whose native language is English, or who have earned a law degree from an institution at which the primary language of instruction is English, are not required to submit a TOEFL or IELTS score. Graduates of U.S. J.D. programs are also exempt from the TOEFL/IELTS requirement.

Confirming Your Application Status

After you submit your online application through the LSAC website, and your complete LL.M. Credential Assembly Service report is available on the LSAC website, our staff will download these materials and assemble your application file. Due to the large volume of applications received, this process generally takes 1-2 weeks. After that time, our staff will email you to confirm that your application is complete.

Receiving Your Admission Result

The Graduate Studies Committee will begin reviewing an application after all of its corresponding supporting documentation has been received. Admission results will be announced on a rolling basis from February through April. (Due to the large volume of applications received, it is difficult to predict when a decision regarding a specific application will be reached.) Applicants will receive an email from Vic Telesino, Senior Director of Graduate Admissions, informing them of the Committee's decision as soon as it is made.
