Saving Lives With Sound
Critical thinking at the point of care
Clinical decisions at the point-of-care demand that practitioners execute a carefully orchestrated cognitive and technical sequence. Point-of-care ultrasound, as an extension to this clinical exam, can enhance this sequence; it can yield real-time, dynamic, and accurate findings to enable those clinical decisions. But does it always make clinical decisions better or more accurate? While the advantages of point-of-care ultrasound are clear, what is less clear sometimes is how practitioners should wield this tool in the clinical context to both increase diagnostic success and reduce diagnostic error. In this tutorial, Dr. Smyth walks us through a challenging case of critical hypoxemia and reviews the vital steps to integrate sonographic findings. He further sheds light on how to think when ultrasound may become the center of attention; or even worse, risks de-centering your attention. We would like to thank Dr. Leo Smyth, senior trainee in General Internal Medicine, at the University of Alberta for his work

Editorial Reviews
"This book covers a wide range of ultrasound examinations looking at the clinical question first. It is written for sonographers and student sonographers by two Academics and a sonographer. Because this book is written by American authors some terminology will be incorrect in the UK setting. [...] However, as long as the reader is aware of this, most Ultrasound Departments will find this a useful resource to have on their shelves and use for CPD." February 28 @ 7:00 pm - 8:00 pm est.
ULTRASOUND SOLUTIONS CORP. is pleased to welcome back MATTHEW RYAN, MSHA, RDMS, RVT, RT(R), Clinical Coordinator for the Sonography Program at Aurora St. Luke’s Medical Center’s School of Diagnostic Medical Sonography, for an important session on how to hone your communication and critical thinking skills.
Course Description:
Communication is a fundamental and vital component in all steps of the health care process. Whether it involves accurately obtaining or sharing medical information, the need for concise, effective communication is always crucial when optimal patient care is at stake. This presentation will discuss the different methods of communication, as well as how to implement these methods when interacting with patients, students, and medical staff. The process for learning how to develop and utilize critical thinking skills will be emphasized. (Approved for 1 SDMS CME credit, provided one is present for the entire event)
This CME event is graciously sponsored by:
We appreciate your support!
Course Objectives: Upon completion of this educational activity, the participant will be able to:
- Define what effective communication is.
- State ways in which to effectively communicate.
- Describe the process for developing critical thinking skills.
- Discuss ways to apply critical thinking skills with your students and staff.
About Our Speaker:
Eventually, Matt transitioned from onsite Clinical Instructor to a full-time teaching position. His areas of instruction include Gynecology, Small Parts, Interventional Procedures, and Vascular Sonography. More recently, Matt has added to his academic teaching responsibilities by managing all aspects of a student’s clinical training as the Clinical Coordinator for the Sonography Program at Aurora St. Luke’s Medical Center’s School of Diagnostic Medical Sonography in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Matt was instrumental in developing, designing, and implementing the Scan Lab portion of his students’ training. He has also created and implemented training courses for Nurse Practitioners, Physician Assistants, and First Year Radiology Residents. Outside of his primary job, he develops and presents lectures to various professional organizations, both locally and nationally. Additionally, he co-directs a vascular seminar course.
When Matt is not immersed in sonographic matters, he umpires for ages 11 – 16 baseball leagues and relaxes with his wife and two daughters in Southeast Wisconsin.
This activity has been approved for 1.0 SDMS CME credit.
The CME participant roster will be reported by Ultrasound Solutions Corp. to the
SDMS CME Tracker System.
Important update from the SDMS:
SDMS no longer allows its CME providers to issue Partial Credit for attendance. If you join late or leave early, the SDMS will no longer permit us to award partial pro-rated credit.
Therefore, from now on, in order to receive CME credit, you must be in attendance for the ENTIRE event via your own unique Zoom link that Zoom emailed to you when you registered. Then, and only then, will USC be able to award you any credit. So, please be prompt and attentive to the time schedule. We apologize for any inconvenience, but again, this is a new SDMS policy we must abide by. Thank you for understanding.

Critical thinking is an important skill that sonographers must develop beginning in educational programs and into professional practice. Critical thinking requires students to reflect on information, use judgment skills, and engage in higher levels of thinking, including analysis, interpretation, inference, evaluation, and explanation, to formulate reliable decisions.

It is recommended that faculty develop and use an evidence-based model to support their decision making regarding teaching methodologies and this seems especially relevant for large, introductory clinical courses that use team teaching to achieve educational goals related to improvement in critical thinking or knowledge.
The development and application of critical thinking skills is a requirement and expectation of higher education and clinical radiographic practice. There is a multitude of generic definitions of critical thinking, however, little is understood about what critical thinking means or how it develops through a course. Diagnostic radiography students struggle with demonstrating this skill to the ...

The production of a reflective ultrasound practitioner capable of thinking critically is, undoubtedly, the primary desire of all clinical ultrasound tutors.
