In December, Dark Horse declared that March 22, 2014, would be Hellboy Day, with events happening in comic shops around the world!

The 8 Best Bookstores in Minnesota!
Minnesota has produced more winners of the Nobel Prize for Literature than any other state: Two, to be precise. That particular bragging point, along with a stellar education system, has resulted in a populace that loves its books. New or used, fiction or non, books have a hold on the the hearts of Minnesotans. So, it’s no surprise then, thatsome awesome independent booksellers have set up shop in the North Star State.
Birchbark Books and Native Art, Minneapolis, MN
Tucked into the Kenwood neighborhood, a couple blocks west of Lake of the Isles, Birchbark Books and Native Art has the best pedigree in the state: It was opened and is owned by National Book Award winner Louise Erdrich, a long-time Minnesota resident. Despite its relatively small space, Birchbark does a wonderful job catering to adults and children, alike, in its airy space. Most importantly, its beautifully-curated selection rarely leaves customers disappointed.
Valley Bookseller, Stillwater, MN
This bright and friendly bookstoreis attached to a coffee shop, and shares a block with a brewery, a winery, a yoga studio, and a co-op market. It also boasts comfy chairs and St. Croix River views—if you can think of a reason to leave Valley Bookseller, you’re doing better than we are! Itsselection is a little on the small side, but the breadth of subjects makes Valley Bookseller a destination for weekend tourists and Stillwater natives, alike.
Wild Rumpus, Minneapolis, MN
This spot in the Linden Hills neighborhood is more than a kids’ bookstore: It’s an adventure unto itself. The main entrance has a kid-sized door built into the larger door, and some of the first things you’ll notice when you walk into this big and bright bookstore, are the free-ranging cats and chickens that prowl the Wild Rumpus. Other creatures have homes throughout the store, among the selection that ranges from board books to young adult and educational media.
Book Review, Rochester, MN
In a city that is slowly being subsumed by big box creep, the Book Review is breath of fresh air. The store’s been in business for more than three decades, and is the headquarters for local comics and card collectors, to boot. The Book Review even caters to Rochester gaming community with games and events.
The Bookhouse in Dinkytown, Minneapolis, MN
Now occupying multiple rooms on the second floor of the Dinkydale building, The Bookhouse has been a fixture on the edge of the University of Minnesota campus for decades. It’s easy to lose track of time, wandering among shelves upon shelves of used books on subjects ranging from Hank Aaron to zoology and everything in between.
The Bookstore at Fitger’s, Duluth, MN
Located on the lower level of an historic-brewery-complex-turned-mall, the Bookstore at Fitger’s is an independent bookseller that specializes in regional books from and about Northeastern Minnesota. In case books aren’t enough of an attraction, the Bookstore also carries toys, greeting cards, and candy.
Books Revisited, St. Cloud, MN
Recently voted the “Best Bookstore in Minnesota” by WCCO-CBS viewers, Books Revisited is 12,000 square-feet of used books and has been making St. Cloud readers very happy for a quarter century. Few independent bookstores—new or used—are this big anymore, and the musty book smell and creaky wood floors are like a breath of fresh air on a springtime walk.
Magers& Quinn, Minneapolis, MN
The biggest independent bookseller in the Twin Cities, Magers& Quinn has anchored its corner of Uptown since the early 90s. Not only does the store boast a wide selection from local authors, it carries new, used, and collectible books in its massive, two-story location.

Garden Party Books
Garden Party Books is an independent bookstore in Rochester, Minnesota, that celebrates reading, books, and the community. We opened in October 2021, and we wanted to create a fun, bright space that allows book-lovers and the book-curious to explore, browse, wander, and play.
The store has small rooms themed by genre, including Romance, Sci Fi/Fantasy, and the Murder Room (Mystery, Thriller, and Horror). There’s also a Kid’s Room, YA Room, Craft Room, Fiction Room, and tons of Non-Fiction.
We organize events including local book launches, poetry readings, craft nights, local author festivals, the book fair at the brewery (at Thesis Beer Project) and so much more!
We’re also a (primarily) used bookstore that works to keep secondhand books out of the landfill. We accept donations of any kind of book any time we’re open, and if you bring 5 or more you get a coupon for 20% off used books in the store. We clean, sort, and shelve the books to get them ready for their next home!
You ! You make Garden Party Books possible with your support, donations, encouragement, and good cheer. Thank you for making our jobs so much fun.
Anna Smith (she/her) is the majority owner of Garden Party Books. She loves reading and books, especially memoirs about faith transitions, history, and the works of L. M. Montgomery .
Andy Smith (he/him) is the entrepreneurial spirit behind the business, the hype man, the minority owner, occasional worker, and the eye candy (according to Anna). He loves science fiction and fantasy, and his favorite book series is Malazan Book of the Fallen .
Carrie Boes (she/her) is a bookseller at Garden Party Books. She’s an avid reader who loves talking about books, and she keeps the store ship-shape! She recommends The Lonely Polygamist and Musical Chairs .

6 New Books We Recommend This Week
Suggested reading from critics and editors at The New York Times.
- Share full article
This week’s recommended books include two memoirs by writers recalling their parents: “The Whole Staggering Mystery,” by Sylvia Brownrigg, digs into her father’s secret history, and “Did I Ever Tell You?,” by Genevieve Kingston, aims to capture her lost mother on the page. We also recommend two books about Mexico (a history and a journalistic exposé), along with a look at the neurological effects of climate change and a novel that puts U.S. immigration policy front and center. Happy reading. — Gregory Cowles
THE WEIGHT OF NATURE: How a Changing Climate Changes Our Brains Clayton Page Aldern
Aldern, a science journalist, asks us to consider the impact of climate change on our brains: According to this alarming book, a warming planet and natural resource depletion will mean everything from angrier, more anxious people to dolphins with Alzheimer’s disease. The litany, he writes, is almost “comically apocalyptic.”
“Aldern is the rare writer who dares to ask how climate change has already changed us.”
From Nathaniel Rich’s review
Dutton | $30
THE WHOLE STAGGERING MYSTERY: A Story of Fathers Lost and Found Sylvia Brownrigg
When Brownrigg’s remote and enigmatic father, Nick, died, his children were left with a key to his past in the form of a mysterious scrapbook. What they found was wilder than they could have possibly guessed: This hippie dropout, seemingly without family, was in fact heir to a British title and had a complex history that included colonial postings, mysterious deaths, lost novels and unexplained estrangements. Brownrigg sets out to discover what, exactly, happened — and does so with style and sensitivity.
“Gets at … the way in which, over generations and in the face of good intentions, family bonds can loosen and die. It’s dreadfully sad, and yet through Brownrigg’s sleuthing, something touching is redeemed.”
From Emma Brockes’s review
Counterpoint | $34.99
AMERICAN ABDUCTIONS Mauro Javier Cárdenas
In his new novel, Cárdenas considers the devastating effects of U.S. immigration policy on Latin American families, using expansive, pages-long sentences full of references to art, mysticism and ominous technologies. The main narrative involves an ailing Colombian man, recently deported from Califorrnia, and the painful choices facing his American-born daughters.
“Cárdenas creates what I’ll call an art-polemic — a melding of play with political purpose. From it, the cruelty of American immigration policy emerges: How else to capture such surreal inhumanity?”
From Gina Apostol’s review
Dalkey Archive | Paperback, $17.95
HABSBURGS ON THE RIO GRANDE: The Rise and Fall of the Second Mexican Empire Raymond Jonas
Jonas vividly recounts the story of Maximilian I of Mexico, the delusional Austrian archduke who tried to establish an enlightened monarchy on America’s southern border in the midst of the U.S. Civil War. “May my blood end the misfortunes of my new country,” he said as he stood before a republican firing squad, in 1867. “Viva Mexico!”
“Vividly reconstructs how Maximilian’s power was forged and maintained by the sharp end of a French bayonet. … Jonas is astute and judicious in navigating the kaleidoscope of contradictory political ideologies that came together in the Second Mexican Empire.”
From Natasha Wheatley’s review
Harvard University Press | $35
THE WAY THAT LEADS AMONG THE LOST: Life, Death, and Hope Among Mexico City’s Anexos Angela Garcia
An investigation of Mexico’s makeshift drug rehab centers for the poor, Garcia’s book combines anthropological field work with personal history, delivering an unvarnished chronicle of desperate patients, brutal treatment regimes and her own struggles with depression and a traumatic past.
“Offers a view of the war on drugs that differs from the familiar one. … The characters who populate Garcia’s pages reside on the periphery of urban life, and of the conflict itself.”
From Azam Ahmed’s review
Farrar, Straus & Giroux | $29
DID I EVER TELL YOU? Genevieve Kingston
In this heartfelt memoir, Kingston reflects on her mother’s death, in her late 40s, from breast cancer and the carefully cataloged notes and gifts she left for her children to open when she was gone. Kingston opens each on schedule, while reflecting that “the person I needed … was not the smiling, gentle mother wrapping birthday gifts” but “all of my mother, not only the softest pieces.”
“Wrenching. … Helped Kingston see the rage and terror her mother had papered over, as well as the steely will she’d summoned to keep going.”

Justin timberlake's sexy comeback attempt will bring him back to minnesota on halloween.
Not seen on tour in the Twin Cities since 2018 — the same year he helmed the Super Bowl halftime show at U.S. Bank Stadium — Justin Timberlake has confirmed a 2024 date at Xcel Energy Center on Halloween night.
The former NSYNC teen pop star and actor, now 43, picked St. Paul as one of nine new stops on his Forget Tomorrow World Tour, which is reporting sold-out dates in other cities despite Timberlake's new album being a commercial flop and a critical whipping-post. He also added a Milwaukee date on Oct. 28.
Tickets for the Oct. 31 show at Xcel Center go on sale Thursday at 10 a.m. via Ticketmaster.com , with presale options beginning Tuesday. Prices were not revealed for St. Paul, but in other cities on the tour they have generally ranged from $75 to $800. No opening acts have been named.
Reviews for Timberlake's tour — his first in five years — have been more positive than the reception for his latest album , "Everything I Thought It Was," which was released in March. He performs with a "floating" stage and is back to singing "SexyBack" and other hits with his usual song-and-dance showman routine.
Chris Riemenschneider has been covering the Twin Cities music scene since 2001, long enough for Prince to shout him out during "Play That Funky Music (White Boy)." The St. Paul native authored the book "First Avenue: Minnesota's Mainroom" and previously worked as a music critic at the Austin American-Statesman in Texas.

Book Review: ‘Ascent to Power’ studies how Harry Truman overcame lack of preparation in transition
This cover image released by Dutton shows "Ascent to Power: How Truman Emerged from Roosevelt's Shadow and Remade the World" by David L. Roll. (Dutton via AP)[ASSOCIATED PRESS]
LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (AP) — Harry Truman’s ascension to the presidency after Franklin Roosevelt’s death was a rocky one, and it came at a pivotal time in the nation’s history.
Once a senator who complained that the 32nd president treated him like “an office boy,” Truman left the White House in 1953 as one of the most accomplished presidents. Those events are the focus of David L. Roll’s “Ascent to Power: How Truman Emerged from Roosevelt’s Shadow and Remade the World.”
Roll’s book is an essential read for those who want to understand a presidency that, as he puts it, “spawned the most consequential and productive events since the Civil War.”
The book begins during the final months of Roosevelt’s time in office, chronicling his failing health and decision to choose Truman as his running mate in the 1944 election. Through meticulous research, Roll illustrates how Truman overcame a lack of preparation to lead the country through the end of World War II and shepherd in a host of domestic and foreign policy reforms.
The liveliest moments of the book come, fittingly, from the time Truman emerges from under Roosevelt’s shadow during his bid for his first full term in the 1948 election.
Roll portrays Truman as a master at populist campaigning who was able to close the gap with Thomas Dewey by focusing on workers, veterans, farmers and Black voters. But he also credits figures like adviser Clark Clifford, as Truman ran against the Republican Party’s record in Congress rather than his opponent.
Roll’s meticulous research and ability to balance multiple voices throughout provides readers with an illuminating portrait of Truman’s rise to the presidency and his time in the office.
