Rashtriya Ekta Diwas or National Unity Day is celebrated annually on October 31 to pay tribute to Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, an Indian freedom fighter and independent India’s first deputy prime minister and home minister. History of National Unity Day (Rashtriya Ekta Diwas)

The Iron Man of India, also known as the Loh Purush, Vallabhbhai Jhaverbhai Patel was born on October 31, 1875. He is also popularly known as Sardar Patel and was one of the most known Indian politicians after Independence when the British withdrew from the deeply divided country. Under Jawarharlal Nehru’s term as Prime Minister, Sardar Patel served as the First Deputy Prime Minister of India.

Sardar Patel is most popularly known as a founding father of the Republic of India. This is because he played a significant role in integrating the independent provinces into a unified India just after the partition of India and Pakistan. He also acted as Home Minister during the political integration of India and the Indo-Pakistani War of 1947.

In 2014, Rashtriya Ekta Diwas or National Unity Day was introduced by the government of India. The official statement for Rashtriya Ekta Diwas was provided by the home ministry of the country. It cites that the National Unity Day “will provide an opportunity to re-affirm the inherent strength and resilience of our nation to withstand the actual and potential threats to the unity, integrity and security of our country.”

For his efforts towards a united India, Sardar Patel’s birth anniversary is now celebrated as National Unity Day. This is also known as Rashtriya Ekta Diwas. To celebrate the day, the ‘Unifier of India’ was honored with the Statue of Unity which is actually the world’s tallest statue! Dedicated to Sardar Patel, the statue is approximately 597 feet in height. Prime Minister of India Narendra Modi inaugurated the event on October 31, 2018.

On October 31, 2019, an event called ‘Run for Unity’ was also held to spread awareness about Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel’s contribution to Indian history. To commemorate his 144th birth anniversary, thousands of people participated in the run which began from the Major Dhyan Chand National Stadium in Delhi. The almost one-mile run took place at the India Gate C-Hexagon-Shah Jahan Road. His intelligent ways of dealing and his strong will made it possible for us to live in a united and prosperous country today. As per a statement by the Home Ministry, the day provides "an opportunity to re-affirm the inherent strength and resilience of our nation to withstand the actual and potential threats to the unity, integrity, and security of our country”.

India is a diverse nation so it is very important to maintain unity. The Government of India has constructed a huge statue of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel near the Narmada River in Gujarat in memory of the Iron Man of India.

Rashtriya Ekta Diwas: Celebration

In 2019, on Rashtriya Ekta Diwas, Narendra Modi administered the National Unity Day Pledge at the Statue of Unity in Kevadia. He also reviewed the Rashtriya Ekta Diwas parade presented by various police contingents from all over the country.

  Pledge is "I solemnly pledge that I dedicate myself to preserve the unity, integrity, and security of the nation and also strive hard to spread this message among my fellow countrymen. I take this pledge in the spirit of unification of my country which was made possible by the vision and actions of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel. I also solemnly resolve to make my own contribution to ensure the internal security of my country.”

 Sardar Patel National Unity Award seeks to recognize notable and inspiring contributions to promote the cause of national unity and integrity and to reinforce the value of a strong and united India. On the occasion of National Unity Day (31st October), the award will be announced.

 On this day, in several schools and colleges, a variety of cultural activities are also performed including banners, poster making, essay competition, speech reciting, quiz competition, paintings, debate, etc.

- The full name of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel is Vallabhbhai Jhaverbhai Patel.

- He was born on 31 October 1875 at Nadiad, Gujarat, India and died on 15 December 1950 at Bombay.

- During the first three years of Indian independence, he served as Deputy Prime Minister, Minister of Home Affairs, Minister of Information, and Minister of States.

- He attended primary school at Karamasad and high school at Petlad.

- He married at the age of 16, matriculated at 22, and passed the district pleader's examination due to which he was able to practice law.

- In Godhra, he set up an independent office of district pleader in 1900.

- In August 1910, he went to London for further studies.

- In 1913, he returned to India and settled in Ahmadabad and become the leading barrister in criminal law at the Ahmadabad bar.

- He served as the first Indian municipal commissioner of Ahmadabad from 1917 to 1924 and was elected as a municipal president from 1924 to 1928.

- In 1918, he made his first mark by a mass campaign of peasants, farmers, and landowners of Kaira, Gujarat, against the decision of the Bombay government. Despite crop failures due to heavy rains, the government wanted to collect full annual taxes.

- In 1928, he successfully led the Bardoli campaign and earned the title Sardar that is "leader".

- Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel was the second candidate after Mahatma Gandhi to the presidency of the 1929 Lahore session of the Indian National Congress.

- In 1931, he presided over the Karachi session of the Indian National Congress.

- He was the first chairman and founder of the Edward Memorial High School Borsad (E.M.H.S) now, it is known as Jhaverbhai Dajibhai Patel High School.

Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel always worked hard to make India a United India (Ek Bharat). To create Shreshth Bharat or Foremost India, he requested the people of India to live together. Good morning everyone presented here. Today on the occasion of national unity day, I am going to express my feelings and the importance of a strong unified nation.

National Unity Day is celebrated every year on the birth anniversary of Sardar Patel which falls on  31st October . Narendra Modi as the Chief Minister of Gujarat had flagged off a project for the construction of a 182-meter statue of Sardar Patel when he became Prime Minister. The Ministry of Home Affairs issued orders to celebrate National Unity Day in 2014. This day should be celebrated on 31st October only on the birth anniversary of Sardar Patel. Sardar Patel is the only great person who has made the biggest contribution to the making of Akhand Bharat. It is the contribution of Sardar Patel that today people of many languages and religions live in unity in India. There will be hardly any country in the world where people of many religions and languages will live together. The merger of more than 500 princely states into India was an impossible task that Sardar Patel had done on his own.

Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel was the first Deputy Prime Minister and Home Minister of India . He was the mastermind of the political integration of India. The celebration of his birthday as World Unity Day has two important purposes – firstly to call Sardar Patel the Iron Man of India and secondly to remind us of our integration and unity.

National Unity means the attainment of collective identity among the residents of a country. It shows that even though we all belong to different religions, regions, and castes and speak different languages we should always feel that we are all one. The feeling of unity is important to build a prosperous and strong nation. The real meaning of unity is the existence of a plurality of identities with a unifying thread.  Benjamin Franklin said – “National unity is the unification of the people of the whole country for a common identity.”

It was assumed that India with such a huge diversity could not stay together. Due to these religious and cultural differences, our country became a slave to the British. Now that our country is free from external threats and internal discontent, it is our first and foremost responsibility to preserve its integrity and honour.

The day was also important for the Indian Administrative Services as he introduced the “ modern All India Service System”  that was formerly known as the Indian Civil Service. Officers of the Indian Administrative Services assemble to pay their respects to Sardar Patel as the ‘Patron Saint of the Civil Servants of India’.

The peace prosperity and unity of a country are important for its development of the country India has a unique feature that people of different castes, religions and sects live here, and different languages are spoken in different regions, yet we Indians understand each other well, respect them, and support each other in happiness and sorrow. Give and live happily together.

Today there is a need to explain to the youth of the country how important unity is for the country. In such a situation, it is very important to have  National Unity Day.  Such days inspire the youth to think in this direction.

In today’s time, unity has been broken in such a way that its importance should first be understood by the family, which is the smallest unit of society because today there is no unity in families. That is why there is no unity in society and if there is no unity in society then how can we expect unity in the village, city, state and country?

It is necessary for unity that today’s generation and the earlier generation should express their mutual views, and make each other aware of their position. Also, talks should be started only in the hope of a solution. There is no solution to the disputes that take place over generations, every person believes himself to be right, in such a situation, families are broken, so it is necessary that there should be a conversation and there should be such an environment that every member of the family can speak his mind and a solution can be found. Families are easy to break up. It is difficult for them to live together and the effect of these broken families is also on the country.

Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel’s birthday is an occasion to remember his efforts and honour his desire and vision for a united India. He was the  soul of our unity and integrity.

राष्ट्रीय एकता दिवस हर साल सरदार पटेल की जयंती पर मनाया जाता है जो 31 अक्टूबर को पड़ता है। गुजरात के मुख्यमंत्री के रूप में नरेंद्र मोदी ने प्रधान मंत्री बनने पर सरदार पटेल की 182 मीटर की मूर्ति के निर्माण के लिए एक परियोजना को हरी झंडी दिखाई थी। गृह मंत्रालय ने 2014 में राष्ट्रीय एकता दिवस मनाने के आदेश जारी किए थे। यह दिन 31 अक्टूबर को सरदार पटेल की जयंती पर ही मनाया जाना चाहिए। सरदार पटेल एकमात्र ऐसे महान व्यक्ति हैं जिन्होंने अखण्ड भारत के निर्माण में सबसे बड़ा योगदान दिया है। सरदार पटेल का ही योगदान है कि आज भारत में कई भाषाओं और धर्मों के लोग एकता में रहते हैं। दुनिया में शायद ही कोई देश होगा जहां कई धर्मों और भाषाओं के लोग एक साथ रहेंगे। 500 से अधिक रियासतों का भारत में विलय एक असंभव कार्य था जिसे सरदार पटेल ने अपने दम पर किया था।

सरदार वल्लभभाई पटेल भारत के पहले उप प्रधान मंत्री और गृह मंत्री थे। वह भारत के राजनीतिक एकीकरण के मास्टरमाइंड थे। उनके जन्मदिन को विश्व एकता दिवस के रूप में मनाने के दो महत्वपूर्ण उद्देश्य हैं – पहला सरदार पटेल को भारत का लौह पुरुष कहना और दूसरा हमें हमारी एकता और एकता की याद दिलाना। राष्ट्रीय एकता का अर्थ है किसी देश के निवासियों के बीच सामूहिक पहचान की प्राप्ति। यह दर्शाता है कि भले ही हम सभी अलग-अलग धर्मों, क्षेत्रों और जातियों के हैं और अलग-अलग भाषाएं बोलते हैं, हमें हमेशा यह महसूस करना चाहिए कि हम सभी एक हैं। एक समृद्ध और मजबूत राष्ट्र के निर्माण के लिए एकता की भावना महत्वपूर्ण है। एकता का वास्तविक अर्थ एकता के सूत्र के साथ पहचानों की बहुलता का अस्तित्व है। बेंजामिन फ्रैंकलिन ने कहा – “राष्ट्रीय एकता एक समान पहचान के लिए पूरे देश के लोगों का एकीकरण है।”

यह मान लिया गया था कि इतनी विशाल विविधता वाला भारत एक साथ नहीं रह सकता। इन्हीं धार्मिक और सांस्कृतिक भिन्नताओं के कारण हमारा देश अंग्रेजों का गुलाम बन गया। अब जब हमारा देश बाहरी खतरों और आंतरिक असंतोष से मुक्त है, तो इसकी अखंडता और सम्मान की रक्षा करना हमारी पहली और सबसे महत्वपूर्ण जिम्मेदारी है।यह दिन भारतीय प्रशासनिक सेवाओं के लिए भी महत्वपूर्ण था क्योंकि उन्होंने “आधुनिक अखिल भारतीय सेवा प्रणाली” की शुरुआत की, जिसे पहले भारतीय सिविल सेवा के रूप में जाना जाता था। भारतीय प्रशासनिक सेवाओं के अधिकारी सरदार पटेल को ‘भारत के सिविल सेवकों के संरक्षक संत’ के रूप में सम्मान देने के लिए इकट्ठा होते हैं। 

किसी देश की शांति समृद्धि और एकता देश के विकास के लिए महत्वपूर्ण है भारत की एक अनूठी विशेषता है कि विभिन्न जातियों, धर्मों और संप्रदायों के लोग यहां रहते हैं, और विभिन्न क्षेत्रों में अलग-अलग भाषाएं बोली जाती हैं, फिर भी हम भारतीय एक-दूसरे को अच्छी तरह समझते हैं, उनका सम्मान करें और सुख-दुख में एक-दूसरे का साथ दें। दे दो और एक साथ खुशी से जियो। आज देश के युवाओं को यह समझाने की जरूरत है कि देश के लिए एकता कितनी जरूरी है। ऐसे में राष्ट्रीय एकता दिवस का होना बेहद जरूरी है।

ऐसे दिन युवाओं को इस दिशा में सोचने के लिए प्रेरित करते हैं। आज के समय में एकता को इस तरह से तोड़ा गया है कि उसके महत्व को सबसे पहले परिवार को समझना चाहिए, जो समाज की सबसे छोटी इकाई है क्योंकि आज परिवारों में एकता नहीं है। इसलिए समाज में एकता नहीं है और अगर समाज में एकता नहीं है तो हम गांव, शहर, राज्य और देश में एकता की उम्मीद कैसे कर सकते हैं? 

एकता के लिए जरूरी है कि आज की पीढ़ी और पिछली पीढ़ी अपने-अपने विचार व्यक्त करें और एक-दूसरे को अपनी स्थिति से अवगत कराएं। साथ ही समाधान की उम्मीद में ही बातचीत शुरू करनी चाहिए। पीढ़ियों से चले आ रहे झगड़ों का कोई हल नहीं होता, हर व्यक्ति खुद को सही मानता है, ऐसे में परिवार टूटते हैं, इसलिए जरूरी है कि बातचीत हो और ऐसा माहौल हो कि हर सदस्य परिवार के लोग अपने मन की बात कह सकते हैं और समाधान निकाला जा सकता है। परिवारों को तोड़ना आसान है। उनका साथ रहना मुश्किल है और इन टूटे परिवारों का असर देश पर भी पड़ रहा है।

सरदार वल्लभभाई पटेल का जन्मदिन उनके प्रयासों को याद करने और अखंड भारत के लिए उनकी इच्छा और दृष्टि का सम्मान करने का अवसर है। वह हमारी एकता और अखंडता की आत्मा थे।

Good morning, everyone! Greetings, my name is XYZ. Today is National Unity Day, and I am honoured to raise awareness through my words by giving a speech on National Unity Day. National Unity Day, also known as Rashtriya Ekta Diwas, is observed on October 31st, the birth anniversary of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel. He was an Indian statesman, politician, and freedom fighter who was instrumental in India’s political integration.

Sardar Patel’s Tribute

Sardar Patel was India’s first Deputy Prime Minister, and he was instrumental in bringing small kingdoms into the Indian Union. He was a well-known social activist and freedom fighter associated with the Indian National Congress prior to independence. He led the Gujarat Satyagraha and was involved in the non-cooperation and Quit-India movements.

Though Sardar Patel was a well-known freedom fighter, his role as an administrator during and after India’s independence is more important. When the British left India, nearly 565 independent princely states gained independence. Sardar Patel, who was also the Home Minister at the time, persuaded these states to join the Union of India.

He tried every trick in the book, convincing some and threatening military action when necessary. He refused to give up his vision and dream of a single united India across its entire length and breadth. Sardar Patel’s tenacity in achieving a united India earned him the moniker “Iron Man of India.”

On the anniversary of his birth, National Unity Day honours his desire for a politically and culturally integrated India.

First National Unity Day

In 2014, the Home Ministry issued an official notification declaring October 31st, Sardar Patel’s birth anniversary, as National Unity Day every year.

According to the Ministry’s official statement, “the observance of national unity day will provide an opportunity to reaffirm our nation’s inherent strength and resilience to withstand actual and potential threats to our country’s unity, integrity, and security.”

In 2014, events were held across the country to commemorate Sardar Patel’s 139th birthday. Run for Unity events were held in cities such as Delhi, Nagpur, and Mumbai. Several politicians and athletes attended the events. Mr. Narendra Modi, Prime Minister of India, and Vice President Venkaiah Naidu paid tribute to Sardar Patel at Patel Chowk in New Delhi.

Commemorative events were also held at Indian embassies around the world. People congratulated Sardar Patel and remembered his contribution to India’s integration.

Activities & Celebrations

On National Unity Day, a variety of events are planned in educational institutions, schools, government offices, and other locations. In this regard, both the federal and state governments issue guidelines to the relevant organisations.

Special commemorative events are held in schools, where children pay their respects to Sardar Patel and speak about his will and determination to create a politically integrated India.

On October 31, 2018, Prime Minister Narendra Modi unveiled a 182-meter-long statue of Sardar Patel in Gujarat. It is 150 kilometres from Surat and faces the Sardar Sarovar Dam. On National Unity Day, thousands of people from all over India come to pay their respects to Sardar Patel at the statue and museum.

A fitting tribute is also paid to Sardar Patel in Parliament, by members of both the ruling and opposition parties.

Sardar Patel was India’s unifier, responsible for its political integration on his own. We would not be united as we are today if he did not have an unwavering commitment to a united India. National Unity Day is a fitting tribute to India’s Iron Man and his resolve.

A special assembly was organised to inform the students about the illustrious life of the Iron Man of India. Both faculty and staff made a commitment to support the wellbeing of their nation. In order to coincide with the national celebration of National Unity Day, Run for Unity was also planned for the students.

Teachers and students took the Rashtriya Ekta Diwas pledge to withstand the greatest threat to the country's security, integrity, and stability. In an effort to strengthen the link between unity and unification, numerous events were planned to support the goal of honouring "National Unity Day". TKids created posters to promote the idea of maintaining national security, integrity, and unity. Children of Class 5 prepared essays about the history, lives, and contributions of Sardar Patel participated in the liberation movement to create an orderly society” says the school website.

Videos about Sardar Patel's contribution to the battle for freedom were displayed to the kids of Class 2. Following that, students created posters with the topic "Rashtriya Ekta." The children of Class 3 took part in a poem-writing exercise with the national unity topic. The students of Class 4 took part in the festivities by dressing up in the many outfits popular across India. They were a striking example of unity in diversity. In class 5, the story of Sardar Patel was discussed, and students created slogans.” says the school website.

Unity represents togetherness and being there for each other like we all are one. Therefore, in unity, everyone stands together for every big and small problem. There are several stories as well as there are many real-life incidences that are proof that unity always leads a harmonious and satisfying life for everyone. On the other hand, many people still don’t get the benefits and concepts of unity. People fight over insignificant and stupid things and in the end, they end up with loneliness and emptiness. Unity can only be achieved when an individual is ready to sacrifice his/her individual interests and work for the betterment of the country as a whole with coordination. Undoubtedly the spirit of unity should be inborn. The government can play an essential role in the process of building unity among the public. Few steps by which we can achieve unity are as follows:

End Corruption: A nation can never be wealthy and in a better condition if it’s political system is full of corruption. So, we should choose the political leaders with the utmost care and analysis.

Lower Economic Disparity : There is a lot of economic disparity present in our nation. As we all can see that rich people are becoming richer day by day and the poor people are getting even poorer.

The word unity is a five-letter word but has a huge meaning that we all should know. Unity is the need of the hour. In every country, people need unity to survive. If people will not unite, they will become weak alone and then they will be facing a lot of problems. A group of people is always greater than a single person that is alone, in all means.

We should always help and support other people who need help and we should always stand together in every situation. People help someone only when they get help from that person in their good or bad times. So, we should coordinate with each other and always stay united. Unity is something that makes the weaker one strong.

National Unity day (also known as Rashtriya Ekta Diwas) is celebrated every year on 31st of October by the people all through India. It is celebrated to commemorate the birth anniversary of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel who really unified the country. Rashtriya Ekta Diwas or National Unity Day was introduced by the Government of India in 2014 with the aim of celebrating this event every year on 31st October. The aim of introducing this event is to pay tribute to the great man, Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, on his birth anniversary by remembering his extraordinary works for the country. He really worked hard in keeping India united.

National Unity Day (or Rashtriya Ekta Diwas) is the birthday (birth anniversary) of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, a famous personality for uniting India. This day was decided and introduced by the central government of India in New Delhi in 2014 in order to observe the birth anniversary of Patel every year as Rashtriya Ekta Diwas. It aimed to pay tribute to him for his great efforts made to unite India.

This day was inaugurated in 2014 by the Prime Minister, Narendra Modi, by paying floral tributes at the statue of Sardar Patel and flagging off a program known as ‘Run For Unity’ in New Delhi. This program was planned to highlight the efforts made by Sardar Patel for uniting country. At this day, a nationwide marathon is organized to increase awareness about Rashtriya Ekta Diwas and remember the great person.

Celebration of this occasion annually helps youth of the country to be aware of and provides an opportunity to everyone to maintain the integral strength of the nation. It makes Indian citizens to realize that how a national integrity helps in defeating the actual and potential threats for unity, integrity and security of the nation.

How National Unity Day is Celebrated

National Unity Day is an initiative celebrated every year to commemorate Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel’s birth anniversary. It is celebrated by the people of India by organizing variety of events. A floral tribute is given to the statue of Sardar Patel every year at the Patel Chowk, Parliament Street, New Delhi in the morning. Various programmes are organized by the government of India to mark the occasion such as run for unity, pledge taking ceremony march past by the Indian police. Run for Unity programme is held in the major cities, district towns and various places in the rural areas. Youths from the schools, colleges, universities, educational institutes, National Cadet Corps, National Service Scheme, etc take part in the programme very actively. It is organized at huge level in the National capital from Vijay Chowk to India Gate on the Rajpath at 8.30 am in the morning.

The second programme, which is organized most importantly in the government offices, public sectors, public institutions, etc, is pledge taking ceremony. It is organized to observe the occasion by truly taking the pledge in group. Third event organized at this day is march past by the police (central armed police forces including scouts, guides, NCC, NSS, home guards, etc) on the streets of major cities and district towns. Somewhere, a pledge taking ceremony is held after the march past of police.

Employees and staffs from the municipal corporation of many cities also take part in the National Unity pledge and later in the Run for Unity. Students from various schools and colleges also perform variety of cultural activities including banners and posters making in order to spread the message of unity and security, essay writing, speech reciting, quiz competition, paintings, rhyme recitation, art making competition, debate on the related topic, etc. The main objective of organizing variety of programmes at this day is to promote national integration among citizens of the India as well as maintain the unity and integrity of the country.

It has been requested by the Ministry of Human Resource Development to administer pledge taking in the schools and colleges so that students can be motivated and maintain the unity and integrity of the country in future. Thus, a notice has been issued by the Central Board of Secondary Education to administer the pledge in the schools.

Almost 250 centre coordinators has been appointed by the CBSE in schools all across India in order to organize the event in which more than 400-500 students come from the neighborhood schools at each centre to participate in the mass activities. Variety of activities play great role in conveying the message about importance of unity in maintaining peace, keeping public places clean, security, removing threats, etc in the country.

This is democracy’s day. A day of history and hope of renewal and resolve through a crucible for the ages. America has been tested anew and America has risen to the challenge. Today, we celebrate the triumph not of a candidate, but of a cause, the cause of democracy. The people, the will of the people, has been heard and the will of the people has been heeded.

We’ve learned again that democracy is precious. Democracy is fragile. At this hour, my friends, democracy has prevailed 1 .

From now, on this hallowed ground, where just a few days ago, violence sought to shake the Capitol’s very foundation, we come together as one nation, under God, indivisible, to carry out the peaceful transfer of power, as we have for more than two centuries.

As we look ahead in our uniquely American way: restless, bold, optimistic, and set our sights on the nation we can be and we must be.

I thank my predecessors of both parties for their presence 2 here today. I thank them from the bottom of my heart. And I know, I know the resilience of our Constitution and the strength, the strength of our nation. As does President Carter, who I spoke with last night, who cannot be with us today, but whom we salute for his lifetime of service.

I’ve just taken the sacred oath each of those patriots have taken. The oath, first sworn by George Washington. But the American story depends not on any one of us, not on some of us, but on all of us, on we the people who seek a more perfect union.

This is a great nation. We are good people. And over the centuries, through storm and strife, in peace and in war, we've come so far. But we still have far to go. We'll press forward with speed and urgency, for we have much to do in this winter of peril and significant possibilities, much to repair, much to restore, much to heal, much to build, and much to gain.

Few people in our nation’s history have been more challenged or found a time more challenging or difficult than the time we’re in now. A once-in-a-century virus that silently stalks the country. It’s taken as many lives in one year as America lost in all of World War II. Millions of jobs have been lost. Hundreds of thousands of businesses closed. A cry for racial justice, some 400 years in the making, moves us. The dream of justice for all will be deferred no longer.

The cry for survival comes from the planet itself, 3 a cry that can’t be any more desperate or any more clear. And now a rise of political extremism, white supremacy, domestic terrorism that we must confront and we will defeat.

To overcome these challenges, to restore the soul and secure the future of America requires so much more than words. It requires the most elusive of all things in a democracy: Unity. Unity.

In another January, on New Year’s Day in 1863, Abraham Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation. When he put pen to paper, the president said, and I quote: “If my name ever goes down into history, it’ll be for this act. And my whole soul is in it.”

My whole soul was in it today. On this January day, my whole soul is in this: Bringing America together, uniting our people, uniting our nation. And I ask every American to join me in this cause.

Uniting to fight the foes we face: anger, resentment, hatred, extremism, lawlessness, violence, disease, joblessness and hopelessness. With unity, we can do great things, important things. We can right wrongs. We can put people to work in good jobs. We can teach our children in safe schools. We can overcome the deadly virus. We can reward, reward work, and rebuild the middle class and make health care secure for all. We can deliver racial justice and we can make America once again the leading force for good in the world.

I know speaking of unity can sound to some like a foolish fantasy these days. I know the forces that divide us are deep and they are real, but I also know they are not new. Our history has been a constant struggle between the American ideal that we're all created equal and the harsh, ugly reality that racism, nativism, fear, demonization have long torn us apart. The battle is perennial and victory is never assured.

Through civil war, the Great Depression, world war, 9/11, through struggle, sacrifice and setbacks, our better angels have always prevailed. In each of these moments, enough of us have come together to carry all of us forward. And we can do that now. History, faith and reason show the way, the way of unity. We can see each other not as adversaries, but as neighbors. We can treat each other with dignity and respect. We can join forces, stop the shouting and lower the temperature. For without unity, there is no peace — only bitterness and fury. No progress — only exhausting outrage. No nation — only a state of chaos.

This is our historic moment of crisis and challenge. And unity is the path forward. And we must meet this moment as the United States of America. If we do that, I guarantee you we will not fail. We have never, ever, ever, ever failed in America when we’ve acted together. 4

4 This was Biden's most pronounced appeal to unity. It will be difficult to make it happen, though — not just because of the faction of the Republican Party that remains loyal to Trump, but because of the historically close balance of power in the House and Senate. The Senate is 50-50, and the House is the closest it's been in about two decades. And so today at this time in this place, let’s start afresh, all of us. Let’s begin to listen to one another again. Hear one another, see one another, show respect to one another. Politics doesn’t have to be a raging fire, destroying everything in its path. Every disagreement doesn’t have to be a cause for total war. And we must reject the culture in which facts themselves are manipulated and even manufactured.

My fellow Americans, we have to be different than this. America has to be better than this. And I believe America is so much better than this. Just look around. Here we stand in the shadow of the Capitol dome, as was mentioned earlier, completed amid the Civil War, when the Union itself was literally hanging in the balance. Yet we endured, we prevailed.

Here we stand looking out on the great Mall where Dr. King spoke of his dream. Here we stand, where 108 years ago, at another inaugural, thousands of protesters tried to block brave women marching for the right to vote. And today we marked the swearing-in of the first woman in American history elected to national office: Vice President Kamala Harris. Don’t tell me things can’t change. 5

Here we stand across the Potomac from Arlington Cemetery, where heroes who gave the last full measure of devotion rest in eternal peace. And here we stand just days after a riotous mob thought they could use violence to silence the will of the people 6 , to stop the work of our democracy, to drive us from this sacred ground.

6 Biden won the popular vote by 7 million votes, as well as winning the electoral college. The election results were affirmed repeatedly in courts as not having been marred by any widespread fraud. But the rioters who stormed the Capitol on Jan. 6 claimed otherwise, and former president Donald Trump never fully acknowledged this was the case. — E.S.

It did not happen. It will never happen. Not today, not tomorrow, not ever. Not ever.

To all those who supported our campaign, I’m humbled by the faith you’ve placed in us. To all those who did not support us, let me say this: Hear me out as we move forward. Take a measure of me and my heart. If you still disagree, so be it. That’s democracy. That’s America. The right to dissent, peaceably, the guardrails of our republic, is perhaps this nation’s greatest strength.

Yet hear me clearly: Disagreement must not lead to disunion. And I pledge this to you: I will be a president for all Americans. 7 All Americans. And I promise you I will fight as hard for those who did not support me as for those who did.

Many centuries ago, St. Augustine, a saint in my church, wrote that a people was a multitude defined by the common objects of their love. Defined by the common objects of their love. What are the common objects we as Americans love, that define us as Americans? I think we know. Opportunity, security, liberty, dignity, respect, honor and, yes, the truth.

Recent weeks and months have taught us a painful lesson. There is truth and there are lies, lies told for power and for profit. And each of us has a duty and responsibility, as citizens, as Americans, and especially as leaders, leaders who have pledged to honor our Constitution and protect our nation, to defend the truth and defeat the lies. 8

Look — I understand that many of my fellow Americans view the future with fear and trepidation. I understand they worry about their jobs. I understand, like my dad, they lay in bed at night, staring at the ceiling, wondering: Can I keep my health care? Can I pay my mortgage? Thinking about their families, about what comes next. I promise you, I get it.

But the answer is not to turn inward, to retreat into competing factions, distrusting those who don’t look like you or worship the way you do, or don’t get their news from the same sources you do. We must end this uncivil war 9 that pits red against blue, rural vs. urban, conservative vs. liberal. We can do this if we open our souls instead of hardening our hearts. If we show a little tolerance and humility, and if we’re willing to stand in the other person’s shoes, as my mom would say, just for a moment, stand in their shoes. Because here’s the thing about life: There’s no accounting for what fate will deal you. Some days when you need a hand. There are other days when we’re called to lend a hand. That’s how it has to be. That’s what we do for one another. And if we are this way, our country will be stronger, more prosperous, more ready for the future. And we can still disagree.

So here’s my message to those beyond our borders: 11 America has been tested and we’ve come out stronger for it. We will repair our alliances and engage with the world once again. Not to meet yesterday’s challenges, but today’s and tomorrow’s challenges. And we’ll lead, not merely by the example of our power, but by the power of our example.

And my first act as president, I’d like to ask you to join me in a moment of silent prayer to remember all those who we lost this past year to the pandemic. Those 400,000 fellow Americans. Moms, dads, husbands, wives, sons, daughters, friends, neighbors and co-workers. We will honor them by becoming the people and the nation we know we can and should be. So I ask you, let’s say a silent prayer for those who’ve lost their lives, those left behind, and for our country. 12

Folks, this is a time of testing. We face an attack on our democracy and on truth, a raging virus, growing inequity, the sting of systemic racism, a climate in crisis, America’s role in the world. Any one of these will be enough to challenge us in profound ways. But the fact is, we face them all at once, presenting this nation with one of the gravest responsibilities we’ve had. Now we’re going to be tested. Are we going to step up? All of us? It’s time for boldness, for there is so much to do. And this is certain, I promise you: We will be judged, you and I, by how we resolve these cascading crises of our era.

Will we rise to the occasion is the question. Will we master this rare and difficult hour? Will we meet our obligations and pass along a new and better world to our children? I believe we must. I’m sure you do as well. I believe we will. And when we do, we’ll write the next great chapter in the history of the United States of America. The American story. A story that might sound something like a song that means a lot to me. It’s called “American Anthem.” There’s one verse that stands out, at least for me, and it goes like this:

The work and prayers of a century have brought us to this day.

What shall be our legacy? What will our children say?

Let me know in my heart when my days are through.

America, America, I gave my best to you.

Let's add. Let us add our own work and prayers to the unfolding story of our great nation. If we do this, then when our days are through, our children and our children's children will say of us: They gave their best, they did their duty, they healed a broken land.

My fellow Americans, I close the day where I began, with a sacred oath before God and all of you. I give you my word, I will always level with you. I will defend the Constitution. I’ll defend our democracy. I’ll defend America and I will give all, all of you. Keep everything I do in your service, thinking not of power, but of possibilities, not of personal interest, but the public good. And together we shall write an American story of hope, not fear. Of unity, not division. Of light, not darkness. A story of decency and dignity, love and healing, greatness and goodness. May this be the story that guides us. The story that inspires us and the story that tells ages yet to come that we answered the call of history. We met the moment. Democracy and hope, truth and justice did not die on our watch, but thrived. That America secured liberty at home and stood once again as a beacon to the world. That is what we owe our forebears, one another and generations to follow.

So, with purpose and resolve, we turn to those tasks of our time. Sustained by faith, driven by conviction, devoted to one another and the country we love with all our hearts. May God bless America and may God protect our troops. Thank you, America.

Any nation’s unity is its greatest asset, and peace, prosperity, and unity are the only conditions necessary for any nation to develop. The development of a strong nation is aided by national integration, which also supports individual growth. All Indians in this land coexist without discrimination, hence our nation’s most distinguishing characteristic. Here, people of all castes, religions, and sects coexist with one another. Unity Day in Ukraine: The History

Unity Day was first celebrated in 2022 after a decree by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. It was implemented to consolidate Ukrainian society and strengthen its stability in a time of war.

The idea began in early February 2022 after it looked likely that Russia would attack. Ukrainians were called to raise state flags on houses and buildings this day.

This holiday is a symbol of the unity and solidarity of the Ukrainian people in the face of external threats.

Unity Day in Ukraine: How to Celebrate

Unity Day should unite Ukrainians around the Ukrainian identity and express opposition to Russian propaganda, said Zelenskyy. "Ukrainians have different income levels, professions and religions, but they all love their home and want to live in peace," said the President.

The day is to show the strength of a united Ukrainian nation.

Unity Day events are held nationwide on Feb. 16. In 2022, just eight days after Russia launched its unprovoked war of empire and aggression, an impressive 200-meter blue-and-yellow flag was unfurled in Kyiv. A similarly giant Ukrainian flag of Ukraine appeared in Sievierodonetsk, Donetsk Oblast.

Ukrainians congratulate each other and join the celebration in various ways. The vyshyvanka, an embroidered shirt that is part of Ukraine’s national clothing can be seen at workplaces around the country and on children at schools nationwide. Others attach blue-and-yellow ribbons to their clothes or bags.

A flash mob was launched on social networks before Unity Day 2023. Participants took pictures with the flag of Ukraine and use the #UArazom (#UA together) hashtag, before tagging friends and colleagues as part of the challenge.

D-Day news rang out across Delaware as the bells tolled

At 7:45 a. m., the bell of All Saints’ Episcopal Church at Rehoboth Beach rang to announce the first of its new schedule of daily services for the summer season. At the entrance to the church on Olive Street, rector the Rev. Nelson W. Rightmyer greeted worshipers.

Rev. Rightmyer was also rector of St. Peter’s in Lewes; and during the summer, he did double duty as the rector of All Saints. In addition, he was the chairmen of the Lewes branch of the Red Cross, and he was known as “The little padre with a big heart.”

Church bells spread the news about D-Day invasion in Delaware

As Rev. Rightmyer was welcoming worshipers to All Saints, other churches that had no morning services scheduled began to ring their bells announcing that the long-awaited D-Day invasion had begun.

After the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor in December 1941 that thrust the United States into World War II, residents of coastal Delaware found themselves on the front lines. Enemy submarines prowled the waters off the Delmarva coast, and scores of survivors from U-boat attacks landed at Lewes.

By 1944, the submarine attacks had diminished, but blackout regulations, rationing of food and other vital supplies, the presence of over two thousand soldiers at Fort Miles, air raid drills, the huge searchlights that lit up the sky and ocean, and newspaper articles listing the deaths of coastal residents reminded Lewes, Rehoboth and Bethany beach residents that the United States was at war. After two and half years of hard-fought conflict, coastal residents longed for some sign that the tide of war was turning.

On June 6, 1944, when the news of the invasion of Normandy spread, churches tolled their bells, and the Delaware Coast News reported those “who had already turned on their radios for early news broadcasts or to get radio times to start their day’s work, were aware of the significance of the bell ringing.”

The Delaware Coast News also commented, “Resort activities were noticeably slowed up during the day as people gathered to discuss the news with solemn countenances. From practically every home radios were heard blasting the news, with periodic interruptions on regular programs. Many kept their radio set on throughout the day.”

Somber crowd gathered in Rehoboth to hear Roosevelt speech

In the evening at the Auditorium Theatre at Lewes, which normally had two showings a night, the second show was delayed so that the Rev. Rightmer could deliver a prayer. This was followed by a short film of the National Anthem, with the audience joining in singing the words to the Star Spangled Banner.

At the same time, the Blue Hen Theatre in Rehoboth was packed as patrons awaited President Franklin Roosevelt’s nationwide address on the D-Day invasion. In anticipation of the president’s comments, the ever-ingenious manager of the Rehoboth theater, Charles S. Horn Jr., rigged the radio broadcast into the theater’s sound system. The president’s words, in the form of a prayer, came through clearly, and the audience at the Blue Hen rose, bowed their heads and, reverently, silently, stood during Roosevelt’s remarks, “Almighty God: Our sons, pride of our nation, this day have set upon a mighty endeavor, a struggle to preserve our Republic, our religion and our civilization, and to set free a suffering humanity.”

After six and a half minutes, Roosevelt closed, “Help us to conquer the apostles of greed and racial arrogancies. Lead us to the saving of our country, and with our sister Nations into a world unity that will spell a sure peace. a peace invulnerable to the schemings of unworthy men. And a peace that will let all of men live in freedom, reaping the just rewards of their honest toil. Thy will be done, Almighty God. Amen.”

With the success of the D-Day invasion, the war against Hitler’s Nazi Germany had turned. Just under a year later, on May 8, 1945, the conflict in Europe ended, and the coastal church bells rang for a half-hour in a joyous celebration.

WASHINGTON (AP) — President Joe Biden marked Memorial Day with a pledge that the country would continue the work of the nation's fallen toward a more perfect union, "for which they lived, and for which they died."

Delivering remarks at a solemn remembrance ceremony at Arlington National Cemetery, Biden said each generation must ensure the sacrifice of the country's service members is not in vain.

“Freedom has never been guaranteed,” Biden said under gray skies in the memorial amphitheater. “Every generation has to earn it, fight for it, defend it in the battle between autocracy and democracy, between the greed of a few, and the rights of many.”

He added: “On this day, we came together again to reflect, to remember, and above all, to recommit to the future they fought for, a future grounded in freedom, democracy, opportunity and equality. Not just for some, but for all.”

Before the ceremony began, Biden, joined by Vice President Kamala Harris and Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin, placed a wreath at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier.

In his remarks, Biden invoked the anniversary this week of the death of his son Beau, who served in Iraq and later died from brain cancer that the president attributes to his time stationed near toxic burn pits, to highlight the importance of honoring the service of those who came home with injuries, in addition to the dead.

“Last year, the VA delivered more benefits and processed more claims than ever in our history," Biden said, crediting the PACT Act which grants automatic coverage for certain health conditions suffered by veterans by presuming they result from their military service. “For too long after fighting for our nation, these veterans had to fight to get the right health care, to get the benefits they had earned, not anymore.”

Biden began the day hosting a breakfast at the White House for administration officials, military leaders, veterans, and Gold Star family members.

New Hampshire’s limits on teaching on race and gender are unconstitutional, judge says

CONCORD, N.H. (AP) — A federal judge has struck down New Hampshire’s nearly 3-year-old law limiting what teachers can say about race, gender, sexual orientation, disability and other topics in public schools as unconstitutionally vague. The ruling could revive the topic as an election year campaign issue.

Republicans pitched the 2021 law as an anti-discrimination measure after the Trump administration sought to ban discussion of “divisive concepts.” It prohibits teaching public school children that they’re inferior, racist, sexist or oppressive by virtue of their race, gender or other characteristics.

Teachers found to have violated the law could face discipline including the possible loss of their licenses, and could also face lawsuits.

Educators and administrators who sued the state said they were confused about what they could legally teach. They said the law violates their freedom of speech, and they feared for their jobs.

U.S. District Judge Paul Barbadoro ruled Tuesday that the law’s phrasing about banned concepts speaks only obliquely about the targeted speech, and fails “to provide teachers with much-needed clarity” about how they might apply it, both in the classroom and in extra-curricular activities where students might initiate conversations.

“This lack of clarity sows confusion and leaves significant gaps” that can only be filled by law enforcers, which invites arbitrary and discriminatory enforcement based on a particular law enforcement authority’s point of view.

Several groups sued, including the American Civil Liberties Union of New Hampshire; the National Education Association-New Hampshire; the American Federation of Teachers-New Hampshire union; diversity, equity and inclusion school administrators; teachers and parents.

They sued New Hampshire Education Commissioner Frank Edelblut, Commission on Human Rights Chair Christian Kim, and New Hampshire Attorney General John Formella.

The judge’s decision “means that educators across New Hampshire can nurture an equitable and inclusive school environment where all students are seen and heard,” Christina Kim Philibotte and Andres Mejia, two New Hampshire school administrators who are plaintiffs in the case, said in a statement. “It is critically important that students see themselves in the books they read and in the classroom discussions they have to ensure that they feel cared for and valued.”

The attorney general’s office is reviewing the judge’s order and considering whether to file an appeal, a spokesperson said.

New Hampshire’s law is one of many in Republican-led states that have sought to restrict classroom discussions over concerns about critical race theory , which centers on the idea that racism has been systemic in the nation’s institutions.

“Judge Barbadoro just put stopping Critical Race Theory back on the ballot in November,” Republican state Rep. Keith Ammon of New Boston posted on X.

Chuck Morse, a Republican gubernatorial candidate, was president of the state Senate when the law was crafted and passed. He called the ruling “a crucial step towards creating an educational environment that focuses on unity and equality, and I will not be deterred by this setback.”
