How to Curb Pollution?

Moreover, we must also practice recycling and reducing waste production. Do not use plastic and carry your own cloth or plastic bags when shopping. Use glass containers for storage instead of plastic ones. Further, conserve water at all times. Fix any leakages if present and do not use hot water unnecessarily.

To sum it up, we see that the change begins with us. You don’t have to bank on the government or the industries to curb pollution, as we all contribute to it. We need to control pollution so as to create a healthy future for our upcoming generations. Every person on this earth has a great role to play in restoring the balance of the earth. Common types of pollution are – air, water, soil, noise and light pollution. Long term exposure to pollution can lead to chronic diseases, cancers and other fatal disorders.

A warm welcome to one & all present here. Today we are here to discuss the very burning topic of the decade that is pollution. According to a report by the World Health Organization, eleven out of twelve cities with the highest levels of particulate pollution are located in India. A study says 86% of the Indian water bodies are deemed critically polluted. Land pollution has resulted in a loss of around 25 billion tons of valuable soil each year.

As per the Global Burden of Disease Report by the World Health Organization, the prevalence of hearing loss was estimated to be 6.3% in India due to noise pollution. These are the few reports which have become often in today’s media & still we are not serious about the problem. Air Pollution in India has become a severe problem. As per a study, at least 140 million people in India breathe air that is ten times over the safe limit.

57% of the total air pollution are by the industries, 27% by vehicles, 17% by crop burning & around 5% by Diwali fireworks. India, as a country, is the third-largest greenhouse gas producer after China and the United States. There is a decrease in the Air Quality Index of all the major cities of the country. All these have resulted in an increase in several airborne diseases & the premature deaths in India.

Now the second type of pollution which has impacted is water pollution. The largest source of water pollution is untreated sewage. Other factors include agricultural runoff & unregulated small scale industries, solid wastes etc. These factors have resulted in contamination of both surface water & groundwater. Lack of toilets & defecation is also adding to the cause. Many rivers water has been declared unfit for domestic use due to high pollution with organic matter.

Not only humans but also the life in water is getting adversely affected by this.Now let us briefly discuss the land degradation. Soil Contamination or land pollution is caused by xenobiotic chemicals or other alteration in the natural soil. It is due to the intensive farming, deforestation, improper disposal of wastes & industrial activities. Except for these few major pollution’s, there are several other types of pollution’s like noise pollution, light pollution, plastic pollution which has been ignored since long.

Pollution cannot be seen or felt, but its effects are evident on the earth & the biodiversity. Global warming, increase in sea level, extinction of species, scarcity of drinking water, decrease in air quality, acid rain etc. are few major impacts which are posing a threat to the existence of human life on earth. To sum it up, all types of pollution’s are detrimental to the planet & comes with terrible consequences.

All of us must take steps to bring the changes in industries to the individual level. A joint effort by the government & the citizens will curb the situation from getting worse. So let us make a stand for our mother earth & listen to its pains to save it from the upcoming global calamity.

Pollution can be of several types like air pollution, water pollution, soil pollution, noise pollution, etc. Not to our surprise, human activities are the major cause of misbalanced environment & pollution.

The rise in population, industrialization, deforestation, and mining are the major contributor to the damage we have done to the environment. We have entirely exploited the natural resources & the nature around us. According to an estimation by the World Health Organization, air pollution causes premature death of around 8.8 million people worldwide which is likely to increase in coming years.

Water pollution has raised the alarming issue of the sharp decrease in domestic water for use. Land pollution has resulted in a loss of around 25 billion tons of valuable soil each year. Noise pollution has affected both behaviour & health of humans. Not only the humans but pollution has given a significant threat to the flora & fauna on the earth too.

Pollution has also led to many more serious problems like global warming , melting of polar ice, ozone layer depletion, and climatic disturbances on a global level. The reasons are many & all of us need to acknowledge that we have created a threat to life on earth. The consequences of pollution are hazardous. We must become more alert & proactive towards the situation & make every effort to turn the situation another way around.

All of us must pledge to bring a better tomorrow for the World. With an urge for everyone to give their best in the joint effort to eliminate pollution, I would like to end my speech.

The United Nations General Assembly declared it in 1972 during the opening of a conference on the human environment, and it has been celebrated annually on June 5 since then. The day's purpose is to increase public awareness of the importance of a healthy and green environment on earth and raise money for environmental causes. The environment is the most crucial tool for our prolonged existence on Earth. Our environment supports and sustains us. Life would be impossible without soil, water, and air. Biotic elements like plants and animals serve as essential survival tools as well. Plants clean the air we breathe. Animals and vegetation provide us with food. The ecological web is a network of relationships in which every element of the environment is interdependent. This network must be balanced because if one part disintegrates, the entire system will deteriorate and wipe out all life. Because of this, we must decide to act to protect the environment and repair the harm we caused.

World Environment Day originated during the UN Conference on Human Environment, organised in Sweden, from June 5 to 16, 1972. The conference's focus was on human action and its effects on the environment. As a result of the conference, it was resolved to observe World Environment Day to spread awareness of how human activity affects the environment.

Since 1974, when the first World Environment Day was observed, it has been an annual tradition as an UN-sponsored global campaign for preserving and advancing the environment. The entire environment, including the marine population, oceans, forests, animals, reptiles, water bodies, etc., is celebrated on World Environment Day. Every aspect of the environment that is impacted by human activity is addressed.

The day also highlights issues that impact the environment and the life it supports, such as overpopulation, global warming, etc. By bringing governments and people together, it aims to provide the environmental cause with a global platform and elevate the protection of the environment. Each year, the UN designates a particular topic for the festivities in this regard.

When I was in school, my teacher planned an educational trip when she took us to a local park or zoo and assisted us in discovering the wonders of nature. She gave us composting instructions like, every family produces a sizable amount of biowaste, which can be used for composting. For the growth of plants, organic material can be added. We gathered newspapers, tea bags, eggshells, fruit and vegetable peels, and other biowaste to prepare compost. After preparing the compost, we distributed it to the plants.

Today, I am here to deliver a speech on plastic pollution. Plastic has very seriously impacted the health and life of human beings in the last decade. Several events have drawn the attention of the whole world and placed a question mark on the use of plastic in everyday life.

Plastic, the wonder material we use for anything that pollutes our atmosphere, is probably the most destructive waste deposited in the sea by sailors and sea-goers because it does not break down easily. The plastic that goes in the river today might still be around to ruin the fishing gear, ship propellers, and beaches for future generations.

Plastic is non-degradable material, it does not completely mix up with the natural elements unlike degradable materials like food, clothes, paper etc Hence, it persists in nature for a longer time than other materials. India generates around 9 million tons of plastic waste annually. It is so sad to know that 40% of the total waste generated is not even collected from the source. Most of the plastic waste generated is single-use plastic which is discarded by people with minimal use of it.

Plastics can be broadly divided into microplastics and macroplastics. Microplastics are smaller in particle size with less than five millimeters. They include microbeads that are used in making cosmetics, personal hygiene products, industries, and microfibers which are used for sanitation. On the other hand, macroplastics are particles with more than five millimeters. Comparatively, microplastics cause more damage as they are easily transferred from one trophic level to another trophic level.

According to the Central Pollution Control Board in India, we generate around 26,000 tons of all types of plastics every day and half of it is not even collected from the source. They choke the drains, get eaten by animals, enter the water resources and pollute the environment. On average, every Indian consumes 11 kgs of plastic every year. Though it is 10 times less than the USA, as India has more population, we seem to generate a lot of waste comparatively.

Careless plastic handling can have dire repercussions. For an indiscriminate feeder like the sea turtle, a plastic bag seems like a delicious jellyfish, but plastic is indigestible. It can choke, block the intestines of those animals that eat it or cause infection.

A plastic bag can clog the cooling system of an outboard engine as well. Monofilament fishing lines lost or discarded may foul propellers, break oil seals and lower engine units, or may become an enveloping web for fish, seabirds, and marine mammals.

More and more plastic is collected in our oceans every day. Recreational boaters are not the only party to dispose of plastic refuse at sea improperly. Through waste outfalls, merchant shipping, commercial fishing activities, and beachgoers, plastics are also entering the marine environment.

It is very flexible in the middle stage and, depending on temperature and pressure, any shape can be provided. In the practice of plastic waste preparation, urea, formaldehyde, polyethene, polystyrene, polycythylcholide, phenolic compounds and other substances are used.

The most widespread plastic contamination nowadays is caused by polyvinyl chloride (P.V.C.). The soluble chemical is eventually dissolved in them when any food substance or blood is deposited in the aforementioned plastic containers, causing death due to cancer and other skin diseases.

The fertility of animals and their respiratory systems have also been found to be destroyed by polyvinyl chloride. It causes paralysis when combined with water and also affects bones and causes skin irritation.

Here are several steps we should take to reverse the tide of harmful, non-biodegradable waste so that our world will not be overtaken by it.

Use of paper, canvas, and other healthy-fiber containers, placed produce.

Using bags of wax paper, cloth napkins, or reusable sandwich boxes (e.g., tiffins, described below).

Using bottles or cans of glass only.

We need to acknowledge that we only have one planet, which we are supposed to pass down to our future generations. It is our responsibility to keep it safe and clean.

Today, I am here to deliver a speech on plastic waste management. The influx of plastics into our environment has reached crisis levels, and it is evident through the pollution of our oceans. Up to 12 million metric tons of plastic are expected to flood our ocean each year.

Our oceans are increasingly becoming plastic broth, and the effect on the survival of the oceans is chilling. Discarded plastic fishing lines entangle turtles and seabirds, and bits of plastic of all sizes choke and clog the stomachs of animals, from small zooplankton to whales, which confuse it for food. Plastic is now entering all layers of the food chain and is even showing up on our plates with seafood.

Our world can no longer accept throw-away plastics as a society. Our landfills are being filled up with single-use plastics, choking our waterways, and contaminating our oceans. Corporations have been blaming us all for far too long to deal with their own failed design problem. We have been advised that citizens should simply recycle the billions of tons of output from plastic companies and that it will make the required difference to sustain our world.

We were told a lie.

There is no recycling of over 90 percent of plastics. Recycling alone will simply never solve this problem. A radical change in how they deliver goods to people must be faced with the size of the problem companies have developed. It is up to all of us to demand more, to tell these industrial companies that the plastics they impose on us will no longer be accepted. Our planet deserves better and if they fail to adapt, we don't need their goods.

For a lifetime, nothing that is used for a few minutes should end up polluting our oceans. It's time for us to denounce the old corporate story that we are content with a throw-away lifestyle and build a better future.

The Biden administration has been racing this spring to finalize a slew of major environmental regulations, including rules to combat climate change, a first-ever ban on asbestos and new limits on toxic chemicals in tap water.

Many of the rules had been in the works since President Biden’s first day in office, when he ordered federal agencies to reinstate or strengthen more than 100 environmental regulations that President Donald J. Trump had weakened or removed . The president has pledged to cut the emissions that are driving climate change roughly in half by 2030. That’s something that scientists say all industrialized nations must achieve to keep global warming to relatively safe levels.

Lawyers in the Biden administration have sought to use every available tool to protect the rules from being gutted by a future administration or a new Congress.

Under the 1996 Congressional Review Act, Congress can delete new federal regulations by a simple majority vote within 60 legislative days of their publication in the Federal Register. Senate Republicans used that procedure in early 2017 to wipe out 14 regulations within 16 days that had been written by the Obama administration.

To avoid that fate, the White House told federal agencies to get major rules on the books by this spring. That doesn’t mean a new occupant of the White House couldn’t undo them through the regular rule-making process, or that the Supreme Court couldn’t eventually strike them down. But it cuts off one possible line of attack.

The rule does not ban sales of gasoline-powered cars or mandate sales of all-electric vehicles, but it increasingly limits the amount of pollution allowed from auto tailpipes over time so that, by 2032, more than half the new cars sold in the United States would most likely be zero-emissions vehicles, up from just 7.6 percent last year.

That would avoid more than seven billion tons of carbon dioxide emissions over the next 30 years, according to the E.P.A. That’s the equivalent of removing a year’s worth of all the greenhouse gases generated by the United States.

Slashing Power Plant Pollution

This E.P.A. regulation cuts pollution from power plants, the nation’s second-largest source of planet-warming emissions. It requires existing coal plants in the United States to reduce 90 percent of their greenhouse pollution by 2039. It also requires future high-capacity power plants that burn natural gas to reduce their emissions 90 percent by 2032.

The rule is widely seen as a death knell for American coal plants. It will also make it difficult for many natural gas plants to operate without using carbon capture and sequestration, a process that traps emissions from smokestacks before they reach the atmosphere and then stores them. That technology is extremely expensive and not fully deployed at any American coal plant.

The E.P.A. estimates that the rule controlling greenhouse gases from power plants would eliminate 1.38 billion metric tons of carbon dioxide between now and 2047, which is equivalent to preventing the annual emissions from 328 million gasoline-powered cars.

Plugging Methane Leaks

This E.P.A. rule requires oil and gas producers to detect and fix leaks of methane, a potent greenhouse gas that wafts into the atmosphere from pipelines, drill sites and storage facilities.

Methane lingers in the atmosphere for about a decade after it is released, but it is about 80 times more powerful in the short term at trapping heat than carbon dioxide, which remains in the air for centuries.

The regulation would prevent 58 million tons of methane emissions by 2038, about the equivalent of all the carbon dioxide emitted by American coal-fired power plants in a single year.

Banning Asbestos

The E.P.A. banned chrysotile asbestos, the only type of asbestos still used in the United States, which has been linked to mesothelioma and other cancer.

Known as white asbestos, the mineral is used in roofing materials, textiles and cement as well as gaskets, clutches, brake pads and other automotive parts. It is also a component in diaphragms used to make chlorine.

The rule bans imports but allows companies up to 12 years to phase out the use of asbestos in manufacturing, depending on the facility.

Ending ‘Forever’ Chemicals in Tap Water

The E.P.A. for the first time is requiring municipal water systems to remove six synthetic chemicals linked to cancers, metabolic disorders and other health problems that are present in the tap water of hundreds of millions of Americans.

The perfluoroalkyl and polyfluoroalkyl substances, known collectively as PFAS, are found in everything from dental floss to firefighting foams to children’s toys. They are called forever chemicals because they degrade very slowly and can accumulate in the body and the environment.

Under the new rule, water utilities must monitor supplies for PFAS chemicals and are required to notify the public and reduce contamination if levels exceed a standard of 4 parts per trillion for perfluoroalkyl and polyfluoroalkyl substances.

Protecting Endangered Species

The administration restored several protections under the Endangered Species Act for imperiled animals and plants that had been loosened under Mr. Trump.

The rules, issued by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s fisheries service, give federal officials more leeway to protect species in a changing climate, bring back protections for animals that are classified as “threatened” with extinction, which is one step short of “endangered,” and clarify that decisions about whether to list a species must be made without considering economic factors.

Protecting the Alaskan Wilderness

The Interior Department denied permission for Ambler Road, a proposed 211-mile industrial road through fragile Alaskan wilderness to a large copper deposit. It was an enormous victory for opponents who argued that it would threaten wildlife as well as Alaska Native tribes that rely on hunting and fishing.

The road was essential to reach what is estimated to be a $7.5 billion copper deposit that lies under ecologically sensitive land. There are currently no mines in the area and no requests for permits have been filed with the government; the road was a first step.

The Interior Department found that a road would disturb wildlife habitat, pollute spawning grounds for salmon and threaten the hunting and fishing traditions of more than 30 Alaska Native communities.

Chemical Plant Safety

The E.P.A. rules for the first time require that almost 12,000 chemical plants and other industrial sites nationwide that handle hazardous materials must explicitly plan for and invest in safety measures against disasters, such as storms or floods, that could trigger an accidental release. For the first time, chemical sites that have had accidents will need to undergo an independent audit. And the rules require chemical plants to share more information with neighbors and emergency responders.

Raising the Price to Drill on Public Lands

The Interior Department made it more expensive for fossil fuel companies to pull oil, gas and coal from public lands, raising royalty rates for the first time in 100 years in a bid to end bargain-basement fees enjoyed by one of the country’s most profitable industries.

The government also increased more than tenfold the amount of the bonds that companies must secure before they start drilling.

The rate increase was mandated by Congress under the 2022 Inflation Reduction Act, which directed the Interior Department to raise the royalty fee from 12.5 percent, set in 1920, to 16.67 percent. Congress also stipulated that the minimum bid at auctions for drilling leases should be raised from $2 per acre to $10 per acre.

But the sharp jump in bond payments, the first increase since 1960, was decided by the Biden administration, not Congress. It came in response to arguments from environmental groups, watchdog groups and the U.S. Government Accountability Office that the bonds do not cover the cost of cleaning up abandoned, uncapped wells, leaving taxpayers with that burden.

Permitting for Highways, Power Lines and Pipelines

The White House released rules designed to speed up federal construction permits for clean energy projects while requiring federal agencies to more heavily weigh damaging effects on the climate and on low-income communities before approving projects like highways and oil wells.

Gov. Gavin Newsom accused former President Trump of “open corruption” in a speech Thursday at a climate summit of Catholic officials and international leaders, elevating his criticism of the Republican leader in the hallowed halls of the Vatican.

The California governor referenced news stories alleging that Trump recently s olicited campaign donations from oil executives and at the same event vowed to walk back climate protections if elected in the 2024 presidential contest.

“He openly asked them for $1 billion to roll back the environmental progress of the Biden administration, environmental progress that we’ve made over the course of the last half century,” Newsom said. “Open corruption. A billion dollars to pollute our states, to pollute our country, and to pollute this planet and roll back progress.”

The governor spoke at a three-day “From Climate Crisis to Climate Resilience” summit organized by the Pontifical Academy of Sciences.

Newsom said he decided to call out Trump by name at the international gathering of governors, mayors and policy experts because he felt stories about Trump’s meeting with oil executives didn’t get enough attention.

“It’s an expression of my sincerity about how serious I take this moment and how consequential it is,” the governor said about the possible negative effects on climate change if Trump returns to the White House.

His comments were also strategic. Climate change isn’t necessarily driving American Catholics to the polls, but drawing attention to an accusation of pay-to-play political corruption might resonate more with Pope Francis’ supporters in the U.S. More than 50 million Americans identify as Catholic.

Newsom’s appearance is likely to elevate his position as a climate leader on a world stage.

With temperatures and carbon emissions rising worldwide, the aim of the conference is for local and state governments to share best practices about fighting climate change and adapting to hotter temperatures, rising seas and a more volatile environment.

Parts of Newsom’s talk matched the tenor of a critique of the oil industry he delivered last fall at the United Nations Climate Ambition Summit in New York.

“It’s because of the burning of gas, the burning of coal, the burning of oil,” Newsom said at the Vatican. “We have the tools. We have the technology. We have the capacity to address the issue at a global scale and they’ve been fighting every single advancement and we have got to call that out.”

Bob Salladay, Newsom’s top communications advisor, said his candid assessment earlier in New York of the industry, which he said was playing everyone for fools, caught the attention of the Vatican and is one of the reasons he was invited to speak at the climate summit.

The setting of his speech, in a carpeted auditorium at the Vatican that typically houses gatherings of bishops, drew a stark contrast to the marbled floors and renaissance murals that lined the walls and ceilings of Clementine Hall, where Newsom spoke with Pope Francis on Thursday morning.

In an address to government leaders and climate scientists in Clementine Hall, Pope Francis cast the destruction of the environment as an offense against God.

“This is the question: Are we working for a culture of life or for a culture of death?” Pope Francis said.

Newsom and his wife, First Partner Jennifer Siebel Newsom, sat in the second row of the audience in an Apostolic Palace near St. Peter’s Basilica.

A pope’s body is placed in the hall for private visitation upon his death. It’s also the same room that former President Obama visited in 2009.

Pope Francis called the refusal to protect the most vulnerable who are exposed to climate change caused by human activity a “grave violation of human rights.”

He said around 1 billion people in wealthier nations “produce more than half the heat trapping pollutants” of the world. Poorer people, he said, contribute less than 10% and suffer 75% of the resulting damage.

Pope Francis also took a shot at fossil fuel companies.

“An orderly progress is being held back by the greedy pursuit of short-term gains by polluting industries and by the spread of disinformation, which generates confusion and obstructs collective efforts for a change in course,” Francis said.

The governor called the pope’s address “remarkable.”

“I knew what I was going to say already, but he said it before I said it,” Newsom said.

Saying the stakes could not be higher, Newsom to speak at Vatican climate summit

Gov. Gavin Newsom will speak at a climate summit of mayors and governors hosted by Pope Francis at the Vatican in May.

After Francis’ speech, Newsom and Siebel Newsom walked along an aisle of ornate stone tiles to the front of the room, where the governor briefly spoke with the leader of the Catholic Church. The governor said the pope commended his administration’s work on the death penalty.

The governor said he was struck by the pope’s support for what Newsom described as a difficult decision to issue a moratorium on the death penalty and close California’s execution chambers in 2019.

At the time, more than 700 people were on death row. Newsom met with families of some of the victims who had been killed by the inmates.

“It was nice that he brought up the issue and thanked California for the direction we’re going,” Newsom said.

Newsom’s action ran counter to the expressed will of California voters, who over the previous six years had rejected two statewide ballot measures to repeal the death penalty.

A procession of attendees also greeted the pope, who took time to shake hands with every person in the room.

The pope signed a planetary compact after his speech, which Newsom and other government leaders also signed Thursday.

Wade Crowfoot, California’s Natural Resources secretary, described the compact as an unprecedented agreement among international governors, mayors, Indigenous leaders and scientists to work together to confront climate change with a focus on resiliency and equity.

Crowfoot and Lauren Sanchez, Newsom’s top climate advisor, also participated in hours of meetings at the conference on Wednesday.

Newsom is hosting a state climate summit in Southern California this fall as a continuation of the work at the Vatican conference. The state will be inviting local leaders and experts from California.

“We’re taking the torch of subnational leadership back to California, where it belongs, to convene scientists, local governments and leaders to tackle the climate threat that is the existential crisis of our time,” Sanchez said.

Some environmentalists in California said Newsom’s rhetoric on the global stage is not entirely matched by his actions at home. Though Newsom has championed many environmental measures and has waged a battle with oil companies as governor, he proposed cutting $3.6 billion for climate-related programs to help address the state budget deficit.

Susan Stephenson, executive director of a religious environmental advocacy organization called Interfaith Power and Light, took issue with a recent decision by Newsom’s appointees on the California Public Utilities Commission that she said would slow the use of rooftop solar power.

“He’s saying a lot of the right things,” Stephenson said. “And it is not matched by the urgency of action that we need as climate change is worsening.”

Newsom has also received criticism from some Republicans for traveling abroad instead of staying home to focus exclusively on California’s problems.

That was not the sentiment of a Democratic couple from Riverside who saw Newsom and his wife on a tour of the Roman Forum after the speech. They said they were surprised to see the governor in Rome.

Walter and Susan Davis said they believe in climate change and support the governor coming to deliver the speech, which they called “a real reason.”

“That’s what I’m talking about,” Walter Davis said.

Months after second Maugean skate extinction alarm issued, concerns raised that fish farms aren't changing practices fast enough

Two alarms were sounded last year over the extinction threat that salmon farms posed to a endangered species of ray that only lives in a harbour on Tasmania's west coast.

But there are fears that not enough has changed since, and the farms are effectively continuing as they were.

The first alarm was in May, when an Institute for Marine and Antarctic Studies (IMAS) report found that Maugean skate numbers had declined by 47 per cent between 2014 and 2021.

This was put down to reduced dissolved oxygen levels, with salmon farms considered a main source of the problem.

The second alarm was in September, when Commonwealth conservation advice urged the reduction of salmon biomass and feeding rates in the harbour by Christmas.

But at the start of 2024, dissolved nitrogen output from the farms – the Tasmanian Environment Protection Authority's (EPA) measure of feed, which can adversely affect the harbour at high levels – increased by 14 tonnes on a rolling 12-month scale.

It then increased by another 8 tonnes by March, to 490 tonnes, approaching the new 500-tonne cap set by the EPA.

This cap was introduced in 2022, replacing a previous cap on fish biomass, which was changed after fish farms were found to be increasing their feed rates in response.

EPA Tasmania director Wes Ford said that remaining under the nitrogen limit was a positive outcome for the harbour, and believed the current salmon stock rates could be maintained.

"I'm expecting that at 500 tonnes of nitrogen, the improvements we will see will continue over the next few years, and that will allow the oxygen in the harbour to recover," he said.

"There is a cap that [the salmon farms] operate within. As they adjust their management practices, there will be variability movement … and they're coming off a point where they had to reduce their biomass in order to implement that cap."

Salmon Tasmania chief executive officer Luke Martin said the industry was working "within the parameters" set by the EPA, and was exploring ways of reducing its nitrogen output.

Harbour sites 'compliant', but oxygen levels still vary

On Wednesday, the EPA pointed out that compliance points within 35 metres of the farms in Macquarie Harbour were compliant, an "improvement" on the previous January.

It also stated that dissolved oxygen data was "encouraging", with deeper parts of the harbour approaching levels from before 2009, when salmon farming caused deterioration.

Dissolved oxygen is essential for the survival of the Maugean skate.

But data from the EPA shows that dissolved oxygen levels peaked in about September and then reduced by 39 per cent at a depth of 6 metres by April, and by 60 per cent at a depth of 11 metres.

These remained within the EPA's "target range".

Salmon company Tassal defends its farming practices

Mr Ford said the long-term trend was one of improvement, however, with reduced biomass and nitrogen caps occurring in recent years.

"The data is showing improvements in both oxygen and benthic [occurring at the bottom of the harbour] impact, and that is a reflection of me having reduced the stocking density in the harbour since 2016," he said.

"Everyone accepts that it will take a while for the harbour to restore and recover to what it was pre-2012, so we're on a positive trajectory."

In February, industry group Salmon Tasmania — with partial funding from the Commonwealth — began trialling the pumping of dissolved oxygen into the harbour's depths.

Plibersek decision still being 'delayed'

Leonardo Guida, who leads the shark conservation work at the Australian Marine Conservation Society, urged caution around any changes to dissolved oxygen levels.

"We need to tease apart the influence of natural recharging — that is, oxygen-rich seawater entering the harbour — from the influence of the oxygen pumping that's currently going on," he said.

"This could all change again next year because of the weather conditions.

"What we don't want to see is that one event, like in 2019."

In 2019, a severe storm reduced dissolved oxygen levels in the harbour, raising fears that the Maugean skate could be one severe weather event away from extinction.

Dr Guida said federal environment minister Tanya Plibersek, who is currently considering the renewal of salmon farm licences, after requests by environmental groups, needed to make a decision soon, as it had already been delayed.

Mr Martin said he believed the current measures — including nitrogen caps, monitoring and the dissolved oxygen pumping trial — had "got the balance right".

"We feel like the level of the industry's activity in the harbour, the way the oxygen levels have been monitored and being tracked, is now in a steady improvement and will continue," he said.

Industry says 'healthy' harbour hard to define, wants 'viable' instead

The Tasmanian government released a conservation action plan for the Maugean skate in January, setting a range of objectives for the coming years.

A draft plan was earlier sent around to the recovery team for feedback, which includes a Salmon Tasmania representative.

A Right to Information request by the ABC shows Salmon Tasmania wanted the term "healthy habitat" altered.

"Objective 1 is to provide a 'healthy' habitat. That is very hard to define. Suggest changing to 'viable' habitat," Salmon Tasmania technical director Matt Barrenger wrote.

The final plan had replaced "healthy" with "viable" for the first objective.

Salmon Tasmania also wanted more emphasis placed on the impacts of mining and hydroelectric dams on the harbour's health, which resulted in marginal changes to the final document.

Mr Martin said "no-one was denying the challenges" in Macquarie Harbour.

Environmental groups say nothing has changed

Speaking on Wednesday, one year after the IMAS report, Bob Brown Foundation campaign manager Alistair Allan said governments were moving too slowly to save the Maugean skate.

"One year on, absolutely nothing has been done to remove the threats to this animal," he said.

"Salmon farms remain in Macquarie Harbour, not a single pen has been de-stocked."

Both the state government and the Labor opposition remain firm supporters of the salmon industry in Macquarie Harbour.

Labor leader Dean Winter spent his first day as opposition leader in the region, confirming he would stand up for salmon industry jobs.

State Resources Minister Eric Abetz said the dissolved oxygen and nitrogen levels should convince Ms Plibersek.

He was asked if the harbour was "healthy".

"According to the standards, yes, it is," Mr Abetz said.

"Because there are certain limits, and as I understand the science and the regulatory authorities, they're saying that if certain levels — be it oxygen, or whatever else, nitrogen levels — are within certain parameters, then it is a tick."

Air pollution causes an imbalance of gases in the atmosphere, and global warming is one of the aftereffects of such loss of balance. As we all know, our atmosphere is well balanced with different gases in it. A slight variation in the arrangement of these gases is enough for the disintegration of the balance of our ecosystem. Greenhouse gases act as pollutants and result in the contamination of the air. It traps the heat produced by the sun inside our planet and ultimately results in the global temperature rise.

Other than global warming, the catastrophic effects of air pollution include acid rain, depletion of the ozone layer, loss of ecosystem, respiratory diseases, increase in infant mortality rate, extinction of wild species, drought and so on. So the responsibility to maintain the balance of a certain percentage of gases in the atmosphere is ours. For our survival, it has to be controlled.

President Biden and former President Donald Trump tentatively agreed Wednesday to face off in two summer debates months before the Nov. 5 election, upending the traditional campaign calendar.

CNN announced that the rivals will meet at 9 p.m. ET Thursday, June 27, at its Atlanta headquarters for a debate moderated by “State of the Union” co-hosts Jake Tapper and Dana Bash.

There will be no live audience, in accordance with the Biden campaign’s request.

Later Wednesday, Biden and Trump said they had each accepted an offer from ABC News to hold a second debate on Tuesday, Sept. 10.

Joe Biden said he will not participate in debates sponsored by nonpartisan commission.

The agreement between the two camps cuts out the nonpartisan Commission on Presidential Debates (CPD), which has organized the head-to-head events since the 1988 election cycle.

Major-party presidential nominees have squared off in debates every four years since 1976, but have never met earlier than September, after the national political conventions and when most Americans are home from their summer vacations.

Biden, 81, fired the first shot at 8 a.m. sharp , posting on his personal X account: “Donald Trump lost two debates to me in 2020, and now he wants to debate me again.”

“Well, make my day pal,” added the president.

Biden then added in a separate X post that he had “received and accepted” the CNN debate invite, teasing: “Over to you, Donald. As you said: anywhere, any time, any place.”

Trump responded that he would accept Biden’s challenge, telling Fox News “I’ll be there” and adding that he was “looking forward to being in beautiful Atlanta.”

“Crooked Joe Biden is the WORST debater I have ever faced – He can’t put two sentences together! Crooked is also the WORST President in the history of the United States, by far,” the former president expounded in Truth Social .

“It’s time for a debate so that he can explain to the American People his highly destructive Open Border Policy, new and ridiculous EV Mandates, the allowance of Crushing Inflation, High Taxes, and his really WEAK Foreign Policy, which is allowing the World to ‘Catch on Fire.’ I am Ready and Willing to Debate Crooked Joe at the two proposed times in June and September. I would strongly recommend more than two debates and, for excitement purposes, a very large venue, although Biden is supposedly afraid of crowds – That’s only because he doesn’t get them. Just tell me when, I’ll be there.”

Trump closed by quoting legendary boxing announcer Michael Buffer: “Let’s get ready to Rumble!!!”

The quick agreement from both sides Wednesday morning came despite a lack of prior planning, a source familiar with the situation told The Post.

“Contact was made after Biden announced his willingness to debate on radio between the two camps. But then there was silence until Biden accepted President Trump’s challenge this morning,” the person said, referring to the president’s April 26 comment to radio host Howard Stern that “I don’t know when, but I am happy to debate” Trump.

The source added there was one other attempt at contact between the two campaigns in recent weeks, but “no negotiations took place.”

The CPD tentatively scheduled three debates: Sept. 16 in San Marcos, Texas; Oct. 1 in Petersburg, Va.; and Oct. 9 in Salt Lake City, Utah.

However, Biden wanted to face off with Trump on a more compressed schedule, campaign chair Jennifer O’Malley Dillon wrote in a letter to the commission obtained by The Post, “early enough to influence early voting, but not so late as to require the candidates to leave the campaign trail in the critical late September and October period.”

Trump’s team countered by requesting four debates to “allow voters to have maximum exposure.”

“We propose a debate in June, a debate in July, a debate in August, and a debate in September, in addition to the Vice Presidential debate,” campaign consiglieres Chris LaCivita and Susie Wiles wrote to Biden’s team.

Trump also fired off another Truth Social post after agreeing to the first two debates, saying he would take part in a third debate hosted by Fox News on Oct. 2 and moderated by Bret Baier and Martha MacCallum.

The Biden team appeared to reject that idea, with O’Malley Dillon saying in a statement that “President Biden made his terms clear for two one-on-one debates, and Donald Trump accepted those terms. No more games. No more chaos, no more debate about debates. We’ll see Donald Trump on June 27th in Atlanta – if he shows up.”

In addition to the no-live-audience request — purportedly to avoid “raucous or disruptive partisans and donors” — the Biden team asked for each candidate to be equipped with microphones that automatically cut off when their time to speak runs out.

“There should be firm time limits for answers, and alternate turns to speak — so that the time is evenly divided and we have an exchange of views, not a spectacle of mutual interruption. A candidate’s microphone should only be active when it is his turn to speak, to promote adherence to the rules and orderly proceedings,” read the Democratic letter, first reported by the New York Times.

The debates will also exclude independent Robert F. Kennedy Jr. and other third-party candidates. The commission would have allowed additional candidates to take the stage if they reached a minimum of 15% in polling and were on enough state ballots.

The Trump campaign had long asked Biden to commit to debates earlier in the 2024 cycle.

The 45th president’s team had initially said in early April the former president would be willing to debate Biden “anytime, anyplace and anywhere,” and had urged the commission to move its debates up to account for early voting.

But the CPD argued its plans had accounted for “religious and federal holidays, early voting, and the dates on which individual states close their ballots.”

After Biden signaled willingness to debate in the interview with Stern, Trump’s advisers challenged the incumbent to debate sooner — without CPD involvement.

“We extend an invitation to every television network in America that wishes to host a debate, and we once again call on Joe Biden’s team to work with us to set one up as soon as possible. The American people deserve it,” LaCivita and Wiles wrote in a statement at the time.

The Biden campaign piled on the CPD Wednesday, with O’Malley Dillon writing: “The commission’s failure, yet again, to schedule debates that will be meaningful to all voters — not just those who cast their ballots late in the fall or on Election Day — underscores the serious limitations of its outdated approach.”

As of Tuesday night, the commission had not heard from either campaign about coordinating on the debates, co-founder Frank Fahrenkopf said on a reporter call with centrist group No Labels.

In a statement Wednesday, the CPD said: “The American public deserves substantive debates from the leading candidates for president and vice president. The nonpartisan Commission on Presidential Debates (CPD) was established in 1987 specifically to ensure that such debates reliably take place and reach the widest television, radio and streaming audience.

“Our 2024 sites, all locations of higher learning, are prepared to host debates on dates chosen to accommodate early voters. We will continue to be ready to execute this plan.”
