The Nigerian Stock Exchange Essay Competition is one of the financial literacy and inclusion initiatives of The Nigerian Stock Exchange. The competition aims to bridge the gap in classroom learning with the practical knowledge required for long-term personal financial planning.

The competition’s overall goal is to develop a culture of wealth creation amongst the youth towards “Building a Financially Savvy Generation”. Now in its 19th year, the NSE Essay Competition has inspired over 67,000 young people in more than 12,000 schools across Nigeria.​

NSE ESSAY COMPETITION

The Jim Ovia Foundation has collaborated with the Nigerian Stock Exchange (NSE) as co-sponsor for the NSE Essay Competition. In a bid to increase financial literacy and youth empowerment towards ensuring a financially enlightened Africa, the Jim Ovia Foundation has committed ₦10 million in support of the 2018 event for Senior Secondary School students.

The first-three winners are usually awarded equity investments in companies quoted on the NSE, scholarships for university education and laptops. Their respective schools also get personal computers and printers. In addition, seven national winners are rewarded with consolation prizes.

The NSE Essay Competition has been in operation since 2000 and has inspired over 15,000 young persons in over 2,000 secondary schools across Nigeria. The competition tests students on their knowledge of financial and capital markets. The goal of the NSE Essay Competition is to inculcate the culture of financial shrewdness among Nigerian youth.

The Nigerian Stock Exchange ( NSE ) is pleased to announce the commencement of the 2022 edition of its annual Essay Competition. The NSE Essay Competition is one of the financial literacy and inclusion initiatives of The Nigerian Stock Exchange. The London School of Economics Students’ Union Economics Society is honoured to collaborate once again with the Centre for Economic Performance, one of the leading economic research centres in Europe, to launch the 2022 Essay Competition. The essay competition will encourage pre-tertiary students to think critically on current social issues such as economic assimilation, diversity in the economics profession, and to explore important intellectual debates, such as the distribution of the burden of environmental policies.

In your essay, please answer one of the six questions below:

• How can the lack of gender balance in Economics be explained? Does COVID-19 represent another set-back for efforts to achieve gender parity in the subject?
• African nations will be left poorer and more economically vulnerable as a result of the invasion of Ukraine. To what extent do you agree with this statement?

We are living in a world filled with uncertainty. Since February 2022, the Russia-Ukraine Conflict has lasted more than 6 months, bringing turbulence and destruction to the people of Ukraine. Meanwhile, the energy crisis induced by it added fuel to the global economic decline that has been going on since the beginning of the pandemic. Some viewed the current chaos as a result of the fall of U.S. hegemony, global geopolitical landscape has changed radically entering the 2020s. It is the responsibility of political scientists to help people understand this rapidly changing world. Please choose 1 question from the above to answer.

Our selection of essay titles engage across a broad range of technology, social science and humanities topics and we look forward to receiving entries from talented and intellectually curious students who show passion in their subject area. Applied Digital & Technology Solutions: Discuss the societal risks and rewards associated with generative AI (such as ChatGPT). 

Business: Is it possible to reconcile the cost-of-living crisis consumers are experiencing with the need for sustainable consumption?

Computer & Data Science: Describe a modern application of data science based on machine learning, generative AI or data analytics. Discuss its context in terms of topic, domain, and societal implications. 

Economics: Does the expanding gig economy contribute positively to sustainable economic growth? 

English: Is it fair to say that literature is another name for language which has no practical use? 

History: How have empires throughout history shaped the societies we live in today? 

Law: Ed Sheeran said “Defending copyright infringement lawsuits has become as much a part of the job description for top musicians as the performance of hits”. Discuss whether UK copyright laws are out of date and should be reviewed by Parliament. 

Philosophy: To what extent, and in what ways, can the past be a good guide to the future? 

Politics & IR: Is environmental degradation a greater threat to the international community than war? 

Psychology: Discuss to what extent mental factors impact ageing.
