Chalked Up: New aviation building on the way for CCBC; Riverside students receive scholarships

nhef annual scholarship essay competition

As the demand for aviation professionals continues to grow, local officials are hoping that a new home for the Community College of Beaver County's aviation program will convince pilots to consider the school as a runway to their careers.

According to the school, they have been working with the Beaver County Airport Authority for several years to develop plans to create an aviation facility at their airport. The new facility will be designed by the planners at HDG Architects and construction will be led by John Pappas from Eckles Construction, making a large expansion to the offerings available to local flight school students.

“From downtown Freedom with classes in old, abandoned buildings, by way of converted hangers at Beaver County Airport, to the current Aviation Sciences Center in Chippewa (Township), and now looking at futuristic new facilities to meet the needs of a demanding industry, today’s announcement is a celebration of the growth and advancements in aviation and aviation training at CCBC,” said John Higgs, senior dean of aviation sciences at CCBC.

The addition to the Beaver County Airport will serve as the new home for their program, having a shared terminal, single station training spaces, updated classrooms and more space for equipment. The program currently resides at the Aviation Sciences building in Chippewa, but the ability to expand at the airport will add more spaces for parking, sidewalks for pedestrians and some new office spaces for program leaders.

County officials also seem to be hopeful for the success of the program, with commissioners pledging a commitment of $1.4 million to the construction project. As students start to leave Beaver County for the skies, they are hoping these skilled pilots make a name for their home towns.

“We are very thankful to both Community College of Beaver County’s Board of Trustees and the Beaver County Airport Authority members for having the foresight to move this project one step closer to the finish line,” said Beaver County Commissioners Chairman Daniel Camp. “This project will continue the rich history of our community college’s aviation programming putting young men and women in towers and cockpits across the globe, and by doing so, also place Beaver County’s aviation stamp worldwide.”

Ellwood City Area Historical Society awards four scholarships to students impacted by local educators

On May 15, officials from the Ellwood City Area Historical Society announced this year's recipients of their two annual scholarship programs and noted all of these Riverside High School students had something special to share about the teachers who made an impact on their lives.

The historical society's scholarship committee recently reviewed the applications for the Robert and Janice Barensfeld Scholarships, which are awarded to students pursuing any field of study, and the Marlene Painter Scholarships, which awards funds to students pursuing careers in education. To the committees' surprise, they found that the most compelling essays in both competitions were focused on local educators and school leaders.

For the Robert and Janice Barensfeld Scholarship, this year's recipients were Lexi Fluharty and Jonathan Nelson. In Fluharty's essay, she reflected on the influence her former coach and teacher Joseph Fisher had on her life. Nelson had a similar theme, discussing the impact his teacher Debbie Cochenour had on his school experience. Both of the teachers were in the audience as the awards were presented.

This year's Marlene Painter Scholarship recipients will include Jacob Storey-Smith and Emma Thellman, who will both be pursuing education degrees. In their essays, the students discussed their passions that led them to choose a career in teaching and their aspirations to help educate future students.

More education news to note:

  • The American Association of University Women has awarded a total of $11,000 to local students as a part of its annual scholarship program on May 4. Recipients of the high school scholarships included Lauren Nesbella, of Beaver High School; Sidney Slater, of Central Valley High School; and Raja Sligh, of Beaver Falls High School. The non-traditional student scholarship was awarded to Chelsea Bolland, a nurse and doctoral student at Robert Morris University, and the CCBC Award for Excellence was awarded to Alexandra Wise, a graduate of Riverside High School planning to attend Le Roche University.
  • The Lincoln Park Performing Arts Center is hosting two summer camps this month, giving students interested in music opportunities to explore their passions. Students can attend the Summer Music Camp, which will allow young musicians to learn music theory, history and sight reading skills, from June 17-21. The second camp, which will take place from June 24-28, will focus on musical theater and offer classes on acting, singing and dancing. Registration for the camps and additional info can be found on the Lincoln Park Performing Arts Center website. Both camps are free to attend, but spaces are limited.
  • On May 14, officials for McDonald's of Three Rivers announced they had opened applications for their MAC Grants program. The grant program will offer $500 to local fifth-, sixth-, seventh- and eighth-grade teachers who propose interesting and educational projects for their students. Applications are now available on the MAC Grants website and must be submitted by Aug. 9 for consideration.
  • On May 22, teachers and employees of the Freedom Area School District were able to sign up for free oil changes courtesy of Shults Ford's Mobile Unit. According to the district superintendent, the efforts were led by Jeff McAfee, a Freedom Area graduate who works as a service advisor for the chain of local car dealerships.
  • Sewickley Academy has announced it is working with the Moon Area School District to provide students with an opportunity to play football at a middle school, junior varsity and varsity level in the fall. Students will be a part of the Tigers line-up, both being coached by Ryan Linn. Officials for Sewickley Academy noted this new proposal is still pending final approval from the governing boards of the WPIAL and PIAA.
  • Penn State Extension has announced it will host a Butcher Apprenticeship Program this fall, citing a growing demand for skilled professionals in meat processing industries. According to the extension campus, they will host the program in a "hands-on" style of instruction and assist in finding their graduates job placements in the industry. More details about the program, as well as details on how to apply, are available on the Penn State Extension website .
  • Officials for the United States Environmental Protection Agency announced that the Moon Area School District was selected as a recipient of their 2023 Clean School Bus rebate competition. The district is set to receive $1.2 million in rebates for the purchase of six new electric school buses, which the EPA says helps reduce the number of greenhouse gases generated in the area.
