Short answer

What makes a fundable pitch deck?

A fundable pitch deck showcases a fundable startup. To do this you need to demonstrate that you have 3 critical things 100% of investors are looking for: (1) exceptional team, (2) exceptional product, and (3) exceptional traction.

- According to Naval Ravikant, Angellist co-founder and former CEO.

Successful pitch decks use the same winning format

99% of startup decks fail to secure funding . But that doesn’t have to be you.

Most founders make bad pitch presentations because they fail to communicate critical information investors need to qualify them. Which means they are automatically disqualified.

If you look at the best pitch decks (those that managed to get noticed and get funded), they all use a similar content structure.

It’s the same pitch deck template advised as a winning outline by Y Combinator and Sequoia Capital .

Don’t invent the wheel. Just learn from other’s successes and failures.

Let me show you some enviable pitch deck examples, and see why they worked so well.

Let’s go!

Pitch deck templates - skip the theory and get to work

If you’re itching to get to work, skip the yaking and grab one of our customizable pitch deck samples.

All our templates apply the principles and best practices learned from the successful investor deck examples on this page and over 100,000 pitch deck reading sessions on Storydoc.

You don’t have to know why they work, just be happy they do.

21 Successful pitch deck examples to steal from

It’s a basic fact that some pitch deck presentations work better than others.

I’m not gonna go into how to make a winning pitch deck here, but here’s the jist…

All the great business pitch deck examples have 6 things in common:

  • they showcase a market gap
  • a unique solution
  • a capable team
  • a solid business model
  • some realistic (yet impressive) financial projections
  • and wrap it all in a "before-and-after" narrative with your startup idea as a disruptive force.

All the examples I’ll bring you here do this . Learn from them and make the adaptations to your own startup pitch.

NOTE: the deck presentations on this page are remakes of the original decks, using the orignial content but made interactive with Storydoc.

The originals would look quite old to you by now, and these interactive versions would most likely work better. Our data backs this up every day.

Airbnb startup pitch presentation

The Airbnb pitch deck is almost the perfect pitch deck in my opinion (that’s why it’s number 1 on the list). And now that we gave it an interactive remake I think it’s perfected.

This investor deck example covers everything an investor would need to want to get in on it.

The deck showcases a great product, market size and opportunity, business model, traction, competitors and competitive advantage, a serious team, financials, and even user testimonials.

It presents a broad (and universally felt) problem in simple terms, it presents the solution just as simply. And I love how it shows how the product is used in action in such simplicity. Makes it seem effortless.

Uber funding pitch deck

The Uber pitch deck example does everything right.

It grasps the transformation it promised to do in just 4 words “Next-Generation Car Service” (though I would replace “car” with “transportation”). It has a clear and crisp description of the problem in a single paragraph.

It outlines a massive market that they mean to disrupt. They present an evolving 4-stage revenue model far into the future (Uber Cab > Uber Driver > Uber Delivery > Uber Pay), and they present amazing traction.

No wonder Uber was so successful at raising money .

Netflix startup deck

Netflix had a great idea but they also weaved it into a great problem-solution narrative pitch deck. The problem? Outdated entertainment distribution. The solution? Streamed entertainment that’s accessible, personalized, and ad-free.

The Netflix pitch deck example also uses their team to “sell” their dream by playing on Netflix’s strong company culture .

This pitch deck could have been slightly better if it had a comprehensive outline of the market gap.

Tinder pitch presentation

Tinder's pitch deck is a masterclass in simplicity .

Starting from their title: “The dating game: it starts with a swipe”. Which wasn’t true at the time but is now (like it or not) the new normal.

And down to their summary of the user flow: “Match. Chat. Date.”

Simple, yet super clear.

Tinder’s deck is also one of the most fun decks I’ve ever seen . I’ve breezed through it maybe a dozen times but still, it gets me excited about the app every time.

WeWork startup pitch deck

The WeWork pitch deck example is probably the most famous on this list. What makes it so great (beyond its fundraising success) is that it managed to sell a great vision.

WeWork’s deck is all about its grand vision - “Empowering Tomorrow's World at Work”.

They only topped it off with a bit of promising financials to quiet an uneasy investor’s mind.

After all, WeWork managed to sell a low-return real estate company as a fast-growing high-tech solution.

Slack company intro deck

Slack’s startup company intro deck uses a transformational narrative framework to take potential investors from Slack’s history to Slack’s future and tempt investors to join the journey.

The snappy and descriptive title for the deck and company - “Collaboration platform for 21st century” encapsulates this contrast between past and future.

It’s a beautiful piece of copywriting.

The transformational narrative sets the stage for winners (who embrace the change Slack represents) and losers who stay behind.

This plays on an investor’s biggest fear - missing a great opportunity and staying behind.

Dropbox pitch deck

The DropBox pitch deck is another example of a very well-made pitch deck. So it’s no surprise they were backed by Sequoia .

They did great work in applying Sequoia’s pitch deck template with an emphasis on “ why now? ” and “ why you? ”.

But they did even better. The deck includes a crisp and simple breakdown of the problem and their groundbreaking solution, and an attractive product demo.

If I may say so, I think we improved the deck by turning bullet points into dynamic content and adding their amusing and tempting video in their “about us” slide.

Tesla investor deck

The Tesla pitch deck is unique on this list because of its emphasis on the team and product specifications rather than the “big idea”.

The reason for this is that Tesla did not invent the wheel (or the car rather). Their success relies on their technological superiority in the automotive industry rather than a completely new solution.

Tesla’s deck focuses on showing a strong team with Elon Musk at the helm, a growing engineering corp, a growing client base, and the technical specifications and features that ensure Tesla will win the race (pun intended).

YouTube product pitch deck

The YouTube pitch deck is a classic winning startup deck. It has all 6 aspects that make a pitch deck fundable (which we’ve covered above). But it does it effortlessly, without fuss.

YouTube’s investor deck introduces the problem they solve in the context of an emerging market gap (“why now?”). They also position themselves as the first solution to market and have amazing traction stats to back it up.

It just immediately looks like a great opportunity, and it was.

Y Combinator seed deck template

The Y Combinator pitch deck example is not really a pitch deck but rather a mock seed deck that follows the content template recommended by YC .

The guys at YC had some fun with it and filled the deck with sarcastic comments and ridiculous emojis.

It’s a top-notch example of content structure , but I wouldn’t recommend emulating the playful (borderline mocking) tone of voice or the reckless use of emojis.

Sequoia pitch deck template

The Sequoia pitch deck example , much like the Y Combinator example is not a real pitch deck. It’s Sequoia Capital’s pitch deck template which they advise startups to use when they pitch their idea in their Sequoia application .

Sequoia’s deck includes their signature slide “why now” which some of the other decks on our list apply. But also has another important slide “ the ask ”, where you’re supposed to ask how much money you need and how you minted to put it to good use.

This particular pitch deck is for the healthcare industry , but the template can be used cross-industry.

Adunify AdTech investment deck

This deck by Adunify is a powerful example of how a small up-and-coming startup can use the winning content framework to look like an exciting game-changer .

Adunify built their deck along the transformational narrative framework . This lets them present a dry (though innovative) marketing solution as a tool for changing users’ lives for the better.

They start with the vision and go through the established problem-solution presentation and market analysis, but throw in proven results, customer testimonials, and their manifesto as reinforcement.

Cannasoft medical cannabis pitch deck

The Cannasoft startup investor deck was built with interactive storytelling in mind by a Storydoc client.

It pitches Cannasoft as the CRM Platform for the Medical Cannabis Market and demonstrates why they are positioned to become the industry standard.

The deck makes full use of Storydoc’s scrollytelling capabilities which breaks down complex information into simple and easy-to-understand bite-size morsels.

Just take a look at how they present their market fit, roadmap, product advantages, and financial forecast. Pure storytelling gold.

Crypto pitch deck

This blockchain technology startup pitch deck is a made-up template based on some of our best-performing client crypto pitch decks.

The s tructure follows the winning formula as all the rest and the beautiful designs were generated or selected by our AI design engine.

Physical product pitch deck

Pitching a physical product is harder than pitching a SaaS product.

Most products of this kind have established alternatives so it’s very important to give some technical explanation of how you’re doing it better.

But the most important aspect here is showing your product rather than telling investors about it.

People find it easier to understand objects through seeing and (better yet) touching them.

This physical product pitch deck was designed to help you demonstrate your product visually in with high-resolution videos and images.

You can go here to check out more product presentation templates .

This VC pitch deck example follows the optimal structure and narrative approach you should use when pitching a VC.

It was built and perfected based on feedback from our clients, our platform’s engagement data, and input from VCs.

I recommend this VC pitch deck template to use in your next round, unless you’re pitching Sequoia, in which case we have a specific template for that.

AI technology investment deck

This pitch deck for AI technology grabbed my attention because it takes a no-image approach to design.

It’s very easy to fall into cliches when making a deck about AI, with visuals of astronauts, robots, or magic wands. But you can be sure every other AI presentation does the same thing.

That’s why no-image will seem to investors like a breath of fresh air, and would likely make you stand out.

But most importantly, this deck gives you the winning content framework to present your complex technology in a flowing, easy-to-follow interactive narrative that investors won’t get bored of mid-way.

Start-up business plan

This pitch presentation example is useful during your 3rd meeting with VCs , after you’ve introduced your company and your big idea.

This deck takes what you covered in the subsequent intro deck and product deck and goes deeper into the plan with more detailed growth strategy, product roadmap, and projections.

One of the nicest additions this deck introduces is personalization . Since you know who the reader is by this point, you can address them by name with a personal message.

Startup company overview presentation

This example pitch deck is great for more established startups that have some clients and traction to show for.

It’s meant to be used for corporate partnerships, series B and C investment rounds , or with investors who are already acquainted with the company.

The deck provides solid numbers of the company's activity, traction, and customer feedback.

Startup executive summary one-pager

This executive summary example is exactly what it sounds like - a summary of the points covered in your investor pitch deck.

This deck is used after your meeting with Angel investors, VC, or private equity to briefly recap what you presented in your pitch deck.

You should make adaptations to your startup executive summary so that it includes the information and covers the issues that investors were most interested in during your pitch presentation.

We also have executive summary slide templates if you want to take a look...

Post-round investor newsletter by Xtend

I thought that ending the list with this example would be poetic since this startup deck is a post-round newsletter to investors.

The point of this deck is to communicate the contribution of investor’s backing to the success of the company.

This deck does 2 things really well:

First, it gives voice to the startup leaders to speak directly to investors about the impact their money has made, thereby deepening their connection to the company and making future investments more plausible.

Second, the deck gives shape and form to the cutting-edge physical product the startup produced, which makes its success feel more tangible than words, numbers, and graphs.

Pitch deck slide examples essential for success

Transforming an innovative idea into a successful startup begins with the right pitch. Let's dissect the elements of a successful pitch deck, one slide at a time.

1. Introduction slide

In a fast-paced investor's world, your window of opportunity is narrow. Our research shows that you have merely 10 to 20 seconds to pique an investor's interest. This is what an introduction slide is for.

Tips for creating an introduction slide:

  • Begin with a hook, a crystal-clear summary of your unique value proposition that reels investors in, transforming seconds into minutes of undivided attention.
  • Follow up with a concise overview of your product or service . This should be a simple, jargon-free explanation that even someone outside your industry can grasp.

Here’s an example of an introduction slide:

Cover slide example

2. Problem slide

Here's your opportunity to spotlight a market gap and how your solution fills it. Frame your argument around compelling user stories, highlighting common pain points, and why they must be addressed.

Tips for creating a problem slide :

  • Present the problem in a way that highlights its urgency and its scale, ensuring it's significant enough to warrant a paid solution and common enough to offer a substantial market.
  • Weave your problem statement into a relatable user story that reflects the pain points of your target customers. This adds depth to your problem statement, making it real, tangible, and impossible to ignore.

Here’s an example of a problem slide:

Problem slide example

3. Solution slide

With the problem identified and its magnitude clear, it's time to unveil your solution. This is where you reveal your startup's unique superpower.

Tips for creating a solution slide :

  • Your solution's description should be straightforward and concise. Avoid wordy explanations and choose punchy, impactful sentences instead.
  • Visual aids such as product demos or interface screenshots can support your claims and keep investors engaged.

Here’s an example of a solution slide:

4. Market size and opportunity

Your market size and positioning within it offer investors a glimpse into your startup's growth prospects. This slide should convey that your startup is not just a bright idea, but a viable, profit-generating investment.

Tips for creating a market size and opportunity slide :

  • Present a well-researched and convincing analysis of your target market and the opportunities within it. This acts as a crystal ball, providing investors with a glimpse into the promising future of your venture.
  • Use data visualization tools to present complex data in an intuitive and engaging manner, helping investors understand your market landscape at a glance.

Here’s an example of a market size and opportunity slide:

5. Business and revenue model

Here, you define your financial trajectory, clarifying how you plan to turn your solution into steady revenue.

Tips for creating a business and revenue model slide :

  • Outline your revenue model, whether it's rooted in direct sales, subscriptions, advertising, or a combination. Be clear and specific about where the money will come from.
  • If you've already validated your revenue streams through market tests, share these results. This can dispel investors' fears about risk and enhance their confidence in your business model.

Here’s an example of a business and revenue model slide:

6. Traction and validation

Proof of progress can turn a skeptical investor into a believer. This slide is where you demonstrate your venture's momentum and growth.

Tips for creating a traction and validation slide :

  • Highlight significant milestones that your startup has achieved. Whether it's sales growth, customer retention, or market penetration, use concrete figures that show an upward trajectory.
  • Share your future roadmap, detailing how you plan to use potential investment to achieve your upcoming milestones.

Here’s an example of a traction and validation slide:

7. Marketing strategy

Every successful mission has a master plan, and in the startup world, this is your marketing strategy. This slide explains how you'll conquer your market and win over customers.

Tips for creating a marketing strategy slide :

  • Discuss your marketing channels, explaining why they're the perfect choice for reaching your audience.
  • Highlight the unique elements of your marketing approach that set you apart from competitors, giving investors confidence in your ability to stand out in a crowded marketplace.

Here’s an example of a marketing strategy slide:

8. Team slide

Behind every great startup is a dream team. This slide showcases the people who are turning your startup dream into reality.

Tips for creating a team slide :

  • Share focused, relevant information about each team member, highlighting their unique skills and accomplishments that make them invaluable to your venture.
  • This isn't about life stories; it's about illustrating why your team has what it takes to propel your startup to success.

Here’s an example of a team slide:

Team slide example

9. Financials slide

In the world of investments , numbers speak louder than words. Investors need an honest and detailed look at your startup's financial health.

Tips for creating a financials slide :

  • Include at least 3 years of projections, including an income statement, sales forecast, and cash flow forecast.
  • Be bold but realistic in your predictions. Nothing raises red flags faster than over-optimistic projections.

Here’s an example of a financials slide:

Financials slide example

10. Investment and use of funds

Finally, we arrive at the climax of your pitch: asking for investment. This is where you communicate how much funding you need and how you plan to use it.

Tips for creating an investment slide :

  • Clearly state the investment you're seeking. This isn't a time for ambiguity—it's your call to action.
  • Elaborate on how you plan to allocate the funds. Show investors that you've thought this through and have a strategic plan for each dollar.
  • Incorporate concrete projections and the key milestones that their investment will help you achieve. This helps investors visualize the growth and progress they'll be funding, making them more likely to invest in your startup's future.

What is a pitch deck.

A pitch deck is usually a simple 10-20 slide presentation designed to help founders raise venture capital.

It should give a brief and compelling presentation of a new business idea that entrepreneurs give to potential investors, customers, or partners. It's a chance for them to showcase their vision, explain their unique value proposition, and demonstrate their growth potential.

To create an effective pitch deck, it's crucial to cover a few key points, such as the problem the startup is addressing, the market opportunity it has identified, the team's expertise, and the execution plan. Moreover, highlighting the competitive advantage and potential return on investment can attract investors' attention and interest.

A successful pitch can lead to funding, partnerships, and growth opportunities. However, crafting one requires in-depth knowledge of the market, audience, and business model, as well as excellent communication and storytelling skills.

What should be in an investor deck presentation?

When creating a pitch deck presentation, it's important to remember that you only have a limited amount of time to capture your audience's attention and persuade them to invest in your company. Your deck should be concise and easy to understand, while still providing enough information to show that your business is worth investing in.

Some key things to include in your pitch deck are an overview of your business, information about your target market and competitors, your product or service, how you plan to make money, and a summary of your team. You should also have a section highlighting the risks and challenges associated with your business, as well as what sets you apart from the competition.

Most authors agree on the following investor pitch deck outline requirements :

  • Market Size
  • Business Model
  • Underlying Magic
  • Competition
  • Better/Different
  • Marketing Plan
  • Traction / Milestones

If you're looking for more specific advice on creating a pitch the Slidebean team can guide you through the whole process.

Remember, investors have limited time, so be sure to prioritize key elements like the problem you're solving, your target market, the competitive landscape, your unique value proposition, and your financial projections.

More FAQs about pitch decks:

How to create a great pitch deck.

Your pitch deck is one of the most important tools in your arsenal. If you're pitching your startup idea or product, it's an opportunity to make a lasting impression on potential investors. And while there are many different types of decks out there, the best ones focus on three key points:

1. What problem do you solve?

2. How do you solve that problem?

3. Why should someone invest in you?

The presentation itself shouldn't take longer than 15 minutes, and it should be easy to follow along.

How to design pitch decks for investors?

A pitch deck is an important tool when pitching investors. It helps you present your business idea clearly and concisely, so they understand exactly why their investment will be profitable.

The first step is to create a list of all the things that need to be included in your pitch deck. For example, you may want to include:

- A clear description of your product/service

- An overview of your company's mission statement

- Your target market

- The benefits your product offers

- How much money you expect to raise

- Why your startup is unique

- What are your plans for growth

Once you have created this list, you can begin designing your pitch deck. You'll need to choose a template that best suits your needs. We offer over 100+ different pitch deck templates that can be used as inspiration.

What is the goal of a company pitch deck.

The main goal of a company pitch decks is to:

- Attract investment from potential investors. - Clearly explain what the company does and why it's valuable. - Build trust in the team and business strategy. - Show the market opportunity and growth potential. - Highlight achievements and progress. - Present financial projections. - Request a specific amount of funding. - Spark interest for further discussions.

How much does it cost to make a pitch deck?

There is no one-size-fits-all answer to this question, as the cost of making a pitch deck will vary depending on the level of detail and complexity involved. However, on average, you can expect to pay around $1,200-$6,000 for a high-quality investor deck. You can check Slidebean's prices here.

What is a Demo day?

A demo day refers to an event where entrepreneurs and startups showcase their products or services to potential investors, industry experts, and the general public. It is typically organized by incubators, accelerators, or venture capital firms to provide a platform for startups to present their business ideas, prototypes, or early-stage products.

During a demo day, each participating startup is given a specific amount of time, usually ranging from a few minutes to around 10 minutes, to deliver a presentation or pitch. The objective is to captivate the audience, generate interest in their venture, and attract potential investors or partners.

The text you provided highlights some key considerations when preparing for a demo day presentation versus a pitch deck presentation. For a demo day, the emphasis is on delivering a visually appealing presentation with minimal text. Since the audience may be seated at a distance, it is important to focus on visual elements that can be easily seen and understood. The presenter plays a crucial role in conveying the information and engaging the audience.

In contrast, a pitch presentation that is intended to be emailed should be self-explanatory, as it may be viewed on a laptop monitor where smaller fonts can be read comfortably. It is beneficial to track the recipient's activity on the presentation, such as whether they have read all the slides, as this information can inform the frequency of follow-up emails and help gauge their level of interest.

These considerations and tools for tracking viewer engagement are particularly valuable when seeking investment opportunities. Startups can utilize pitch deck platforms that offer features to monitor investor activity, which can play a critical role in securing funding.

12 Startup Pitch Deck Examples [+ Template]

A great startup pitch deck is an integral part of launching a business. This deck is presented to prospective investors to convince them to invest and help you grow your startup . The trick to having the best pitch deck possible is to include enough information to explain your goals and methodology without losing your audience’s interest.

Pitch decks are usually in PowerPoint, Apple Keynote, or Google Slides to make them easier to present to potential investors. However, the deck can also have an alternative format like a Word document or even a video. For inspiration, let’s go through some successful startup pitch deck examples and discuss what they got right.

Pitching_to_Investors

Pitch Deck Basics

There are some overarching characteristics that make for a great pitch deck. While we’ll go through what a deck typically includes and some relevant business pitch examples, you can pick and choose certain elements as long as your startup pitch deck has the following basic qualities:

  • Design-forward: Customers expect a better experience with your product and that’s achieved through better UX and graphic design. Show your team’s design chops with thoughtful deck design and mock-ups.
  • Comprehensive: Be prepared to answer any questions from potential investors. Your slides should cover enough so if they check back for reminders after the presentation, they’ll find the most important information.
  • Engaging: A startup pitch deck inevitably includes some boring elements. Your job is to keep it exciting and break up information-heavy slides with features like illustrations and block quotes.
  • Straightforward: It’s easy to get caught up with sharing every detail, but it’s more important that your potential investors understand your pitch. For more complicated slides and ideas, pare down your pitch to make it easier to understand.

1. Problem Slide

Your pitch deck should open with a key problem — this is the whole justification for your business and why consumers will find it valuable. A common structure for this slide is to bullet pain points and create a story your potential investors can relate to.

The problem slide is the basis for your presentation. Creating a relatable story makes for an engaging presentation that’s easy to follow and understand.

Uber Example

Why it works : Although it’s not the most visually engaging, Uber’s business pitch example clearly explains how Uber solves key issues with traditional cabs. Uber’s deck is broken down into multiple slides to deliver all the necessary information without overwhelming the audience.

2. Solution slide

After presenting the problem, you should follow up directly with a solution. An effective solution slide structure covers current industry solutions and identifies the gaps your startup fills. This slide has a general overview of any proprietary technology, covers basic product features, and includes relevant interface mock-ups to show investors what your product will do for consumers.

Intercom Example

Why it works : Intercom’s solution slide is simple but effective. While some extra design could elevate this slide, the bullet points are easy to understand and effectively explain Intercom’s unique selling proposition (USP) in the SaaS market.

3. Market validation slide

Market validation is especially important to investors because it shows proof that there are people who will purchase your product. This slide should include any relevant statistics for current sales if your startup has launched or competitors’ sales if it hasn’t. Don’t forget to cover basic information about your target market, their purchasing power, and their habits in your industry. This slide is especially important if your prospective investors aren’t familiar with your product or industry.

LinkedIn Example

Why it work s: At 37 pages, LinkedIn’s pitch deck is longer than we’d recommend.  But what it lacks in brevity it makes up for with powerful market validation using clear data from top competitors. It also breaks down barriers to growth and revenue for these competitors and shows how LinkedIn would improve their models.

4. Market size slide

Market size goes hand in hand with market validation. Once you’ve confirmed your target market has enough purchasing power, you need to justify your product’s longevity.

Focus on continued sales. The two most common elements to ensure your startup brings in long-term revenue are:

  • A very large market
  • A business model built for continuous purchases (e.g., subscription models)

Facebook Example

Why it works: Facebook is the poster child for successful startups. Its market size slides effectively communicate how Facebook’s initial launches succeeded and justify further growth. The slides with market statistics about college students also explain clearly how Facebook will create revenue.

5. Product slide

The product slide is your chance to nail your pitch and sell your vision to investors. This slide should center your value proposition. A popular strategy for this section is to pose a few questions about your industry and show how your product is the answer. Take the time to craft this slide carefully, polishing it up from the copy to design details.

Dropbox Example

Why it works: Dropbox’s product slides are effective because they show how Dropbox truly innovates over other file sharing services. They justify why now is the time to launch and why consumers will choose Dropbox over competitors.

6. Business model slide

The business model slide covers how the startup will run and launch its product for sustainable growth. This section can compare your startup to other businesses or use internal data if the product has launched.

Moz Example

Why it works : While some of these slides can look busy, Moz’s business model was ahead of its time by calling out why organic marketing and search engine optimization (SEO) have untapped potential. This deck does a good job of explaining the business model to investors who might not be SEO savvy.

But wait...there's more!

7. market adoption slide.

It’s important to show some proof that your target market has interest in purchasing your product, especially if there are other competitors in the market. This is a lot easier if your product has already launched because you can include sales data. If your startup is pre-launch, showing potential market adoption can be tricky. In this case, you can use social proof from similar competitors. If you do this, it’s also important to note how your product differs from these competitors, especially if you can resolve a customer’s complaint. If possible, include case studies in the market adoption slide. These show proof that you can use investments to increase the reach of your startup.

Buffer Example

Why it works : Buffer’s market adoption slides show social proof through key statistics outlining Buffer’s success so far. With an extremely high profit margin and growth rate for their user base, Buffer shows off why their product will offer a larger ROI for potential investors.

8. Competition slide

Many investors look at your competition to help contextualize your startup. If an investor has little or no experience in your vertical, showing competitors they’re familiar with gives them real examples of success. This slide should cover the following topics related to your competition:

  • Revenue data
  • What competitors do well
  • What competitors don’t do well
  • How your startup bridges product gaps

Mint Example

Why it works : Mint’s competitor slides are effective because they show current competitors along with future projections for these competitors. This slide effectively shows how Mint creates more value for customers over time and uses competitors as inspiration in their defensive strategy.

9. Team slide

A team slide helps investors get to know the minds behind your startup. Include information about founders, leadership, and top existing investors to show why your team is qualified to launch this startup. Any evidence of past successes with your leadership, consultants, or investors is important to include, as it shows new investors that you have relevant experience to launch your startup. If there’s any relevant history about your startup, such as a higher ROI than expected for a former investor, be sure to include this in your pitch deck.

Contently Example

Why it works : While Contently’s team slide has a lot of information, it’s all relevant to potential investors. In addition to founders and investors, Contently includes top employees, proprietary technology, advisors, and the amount they’ve raised so far. This, along with their financial model slide, show potential investors that Contently will make good use of their investment and even make them some profit.

10. Press slide

The press section of your startup pitch deck is a great opportunity to show off any buzz and get your investors excited about your business. Focus on positive reviews or attention related to your product. Stay away from negative press unless you can show you’ve changed those negative opinions. Make sure to keep these slides focused and succinct. It’s easy to get caught up in showing off product buzz, but press slides should always demonstrate potential for a more widespread product adoption.

Snapchat example

Why it works : Snapchat was in a unique position at the time this deck was created, as its press slide has strong social proof. Snapchat calls out popular users, including press and media sources, that are already using the app. The wide variety of users, including household names like MTV, shows how Snapchat is a well-known social media platform.

11. Testimonial slide

Testimonials give investors insight into what existing customers really think about your product. Testimonials can also shed light on the public perception of your product, especially compared to competitors.

Seventy-two percent of consumers only take action after reading positive reviews. You can use this logic with your potential investors, too.

Positive testimonials show that your customers have brand loyalty and that users are satisfied with the product and customer service. This section of the startup pitch deck is only possible for startups that have launched their product.

AirBnB Example

Why it works : Not every pitch deck includes testimonials, especially if the startup hasn’t launched, but it makes sense to include feedback for Airbnb. Showcasing new users makes this slide simple yet effective. It could also benefit from including average Airbnb ratings for stronger evidence of positive reception.

12. Financial model slide

The financial model slide shows how your product creates revenue. For example, if your product is a subscription-based service, has premium features, or other horizontal integration, you’ll explain that model on these slides. Potential investors should walk away from your presentation knowing exactly how your startup creates revenue and understand any plans to ensure a steady stream of income.

Shopify Example

Why it works : Shopify offers a great pitch deck example of when breaking some pitch norms can work in your favor. Although it’s nearly 30 slides, the entire deck is informative and engaging. The financial model slides work well because they show how Shopify and its past investors turned a profit. Not only do they explain their current financial model, but Shopify also covers their plans for future growth to reassure investors they’ll make a profit, too.

What should you avoid putting in a startup pitch deck?

The best pitch deck is completely tailored to your startup. While there’s no hard-and-fast rule about what you shouldn’t include, make sure everything you’re presenting is relevant to potential investors.

How do I present my startup pitch deck to investors?

It’s almost always better to present a pitch deck live to investors. Designate one member of your leadership team, ideally a founder, to present your deck to investors.

Following a script can come across as disingenuous, but using notes is OK, so get lots of practice in before you present to investors.

What should a startup pitch deck include?

A typical startup pitch deck template includes the following slides:

  • Market validation
  • Market size
  • Business model
  • Market adoption
  • Competition
  • Testimonials
  • Financial model

However, every pitch deck is different, so your final pitch might skip some of these topics or use multiple slides to expand on certain sections.

Now we don’t want to presume your investor pitch deck is bad, but if you are amongst the likes of LinkedIn , Uber , and YouTube – it very well might be. This post is going to dive into how to improve your investor pitch, specifically your pitch deck, using real pitch deck examples. Even if you are not the next YouTube, you need to be able to clearly and succinctly communicate your vision. And to do that, you need to design an amazing startup pitch deck; reviewing other investor deck examples can help you do that.

Search less. Close more.

Grow your revenue with all-in-one prospecting solutions powered by the leader in private-company data.

To show you the imperative of having not having a bad investor pitch deck, here is a quick look at what you are facing as an entrepreneur. Even if your startup received seed funding, your startup faces a pretty big cliff with hefty competition. Note, only about 15% of startups in each stage get acquired.

The Importance of an Amazing Investor Pitch: 9 out of 10 Startups Fail | International Funded Startup Curve

Now we’re not saying that a bad investor pitch deck will doom you (most of the companies below raised money – and sometimes a lot of it), but investors want (and need) to be convinced by your investor pitch . And the best way to do that? Telling your story with a beautiful investor pitch deck.

To find out what makes the best pitch decks incredible , we are going to examine some of the best and worst pitch deck examples we’ve seen and investigate how they could have turned a terrible slide into an incredible one. These examples just might help you create your own pitch deck template.

Let’s dive in.

1. Complex Concepts

TLDR: You can have really complex products, you just don’t want your investor pitch deck design to be really complicated.

Moz 2012: Raised $18M Series B $29.1M in Total Funding Still Operating

Investor pitch deck examples | pitch deck design examples

Timelines are super complicated. Don’t put all that shit on your slide. You don’t need to tell me how your mom started your company in 1981, don’t tell me that you were in debt, don’t tell me when you bought the domain name. Nobody cares about the “before.” All of that doesn’t matter and is just distracting to the truly important information.

Hiding in this crazy Moz timeline is when they raised money and when they started charging for their products and services. A timeline should give that information upfront, there’s no need for any of the other unnecessary information.

Nutanix 2014: Raised $140M Series E $393.7M in Total Funding Went Public in 2016

Investor pitch deck examples | pitch deck design examples

This is an outright terrible slide made up of terrible stock art that plagues our nightmares. What is that splash thing at the bottom? Why don’t the boxes line up? Not only are do the visuals look like they’ve come out of Windows 98, but this slide also makes it impossible to know what the value prop is.

Without a clear value prop, associates at the investment firms will look at the slides and say, “NEXT!”

Airbnb 2009: Raised $600K Seed $4.39B in Total Funding Still Operating

Investor pitch deck examples | pitch deck design examples | best pitch deck design

Ahh, now a good slide. This Airbnb pitch deck took a complicated concept (TAM, the total adjustable market) and made it simple and digestible. You don’t need the rest of the deck to understand this slide – start with key numbers that are compelling enough for investors.

Cadee 2011: Raised Undisclosed Seed Undisclosed Total Funding Still Operating

example of pitching presentation

Another pretty good one. This slide makes it obvious what Cadee does, without needing the rest of the pitch deck. Although there might be machine learning and algorithms behind the scenes, we don’t need all of that on a single slide. Cadee created a slide that keeps it simple, even if their concepts and execution are complicated. Thumbs up.

2. unreadable text.

TLDR: Make sure investors can read the text on your slide without having to whip out their monocle – that easy.

Standard Treasury 2014: Raised $2.7M Series A $2.7M in Total Funding Acquired by Silicon Valley Bank

Investor pitch deck examples | pitch deck design examples

“So what are these crazy little numbers?” “What costs are you not accounting for here?” “What do you mean?” (no, not quoting Justin Bieber) “What are you trying to say? What’s the point of this?”

A thousand questions cross an investor’s mind when they see this, and all this slide does it make it confusing. An investor can’t tell if you anticipate revenue or not. All this slide does is make it seem like you don’t understand your business or your cost structure.

Investors would hammer you on this slide, asking a number of questions that aren’t relevant and deviating you from your objective. Don’t put in slides because you know you have to, put in slides because you are adding value. Ask yourself, what is the story you’re trying to tell, even with your financial slide.

WeddingLovely 2011: Raised Undisclosed Seed Undisclosed Total Funding Still Operating

Investor pitch deck examples | pitch deck design examples

Again with the timelines.

Let’s just say while the investor is reading your slide, they get stuck on month six wondering what it means to send people an STD, and now they’ve totally missed the investor pitch. This could have easily been completed with bullets with touchpoints briefly summarized.

MetaCert 2016: Raised $1.2M Seed $1.94M in Total Funding Still Operating

Investor pitch deck examples | pitch deck design examples | best pitch deck examples

This one is pretty good. So maybe a little wordy, but at least the content is valuable. I can understand what you are doing with this funding – but maybe next time doesn’t use full sentences.

Reduce words to short bullets to give interesting details on why you need the money while explaining why this is relevant to you as an investor.

3. Confusing Visuals

TLDR: Visuals should engage the investor, not confuse and distract them. Visuals need to add to your presentation not deter from it.

Square 2011: Raised $100M Series C $590.5M in Total Funding Public in 2015

example of pitching presentation

We just need to get something off our chest real fast. Square raised $100 million with this deck. ONE HUNDRED MILLION DOLLARS. And it’s our least favorite slide showing you here, but our favorite to rip apart 😇.

First, Square built what we like to call a circle of life slide. Please read it. These things should ideally build off each other. At a closer look, none of these things build into one another and make no sense as a cycle. People put in these graphics into their presentation to make it pretty, but it just makes it confusing.

What’s worse? A purple cascading funnel on the same slide, to boot.

Think these things through, please. And don’t use purple gradients. It’s annoying.

Buffer 2011: Raised $400K Angel $3.9M in Total Funding Still Operating

Investor pitch deck examples | pitch deck design examples

Again with the cycle of life.

Buffer, we love you but we have a lot of questions for you. Which of these icons is actually your competitor? Is it Facebook , LinkedIn , Google ? Why are there small circles within the circle?

When you email this VC pitch deck design out, and you always will, investors will see this and not understand your competitive landscape and think that you have no understanding of who you are actually competing against.

Investors may also overlook you because your market looks way too big and you are going to inevitably get washed out or ignored.

TryM 2016: Raised $125K Seed $125K in Total Funding Stealth Mode

Investor pitch deck examples: best pitch deck | pitch deck design examples

10 weeks to 3 minutes. 1 umbrella policy. All these numbers and graphics are easily understandable. This slide works – it’s is a great example of how to be compelling without being complicated.

4. Too Wordy

Tldr: now is not the time for your novel., foursquare 2009: raised $1.35m series a $207.3m in total funding still operating.

example of pitching presentation

This is a prime example of a company that was neither precise nor intentional with their wording. What is “game mechanics?” Why are there four paragraphs to describe what is essentially an online check-in app?

And while we’re at it, make sure your logo makes sense and is a good fit for your business.

Claim Compass 2016: Raised Undisclosed Seed Undisclosed Total Funding Still Operating

example of pitching presentation

Here is a great example of less is more. Your words matter, but you don’t need a lot of them. This compelling 5-second investor pitch makes me want to read the whole deck and is part of the super exciting power that fewer words provide.

You don’t have to explain everything right off the bat. Tease the investors in with a little hint as to why your company would be interesting to me, and then dive into the details.

Metacert 2016: Raised $1.2M Seed $1.94 in Total Funding Still Operating

example of pitching presentation

This slide is another great example. Use headers to creatively ask questions and rely on visuals to tell your story and draw in your audience.

5. audience-not-in-mind.

TLDR: Think through who you are sending these decks to, and adjust accordingly. Something you think is funny might just be seen as offensive.

Gofiture 2016: Raised Non-Equity Assistance Undisclosed Total Funding Still Operating

example of pitching presentation

This whole thing is weird. First of all, there’s an image of all of China, but this slide only draws attention to 3 million of those people. Also, what’s with this weird red and blue font and crazy capitalization? And doesn’t everyone want first-class healthcare? This slide is troublesome, to say the least.

Up All Night 2016: Raised $500K Seed $625K in Total Funding Still Operating

example of pitching presentation

Not only does this slide wreak of bro attitude, but it’s also not what investors want to see. If you do find an investor who is interested in this imagery, it’s probably a red flag. Another point we’ll get back to is no one cares what you look like, we promise. Leave the full-blown pictures on your Tinder profiles and out of your pitch decks.

On the team slide, an investor wants to see those teeny blue letters. They want to know about your experience, plan and why you are a good fit for the job, not how you are a gangster-thief-mobster wannabe.

Uber 2009: Raised $200K Seed $11.5B in Total Funding Still Operating

example of pitching presentation

So Uber ’s not great at a lot of things, but this slide is pretty good. There’s a clear description from an investor’s point of view and they managed to paint a compelling picture for potential investors .

6. Lots of Buzzwords

Tldr: buzzwords turn investors off – no one wants to hear how you are an “uber of” whatever. just don’t., fittr 2014: raised undisclosed seed undisclosed total funding not operating.

example of pitching presentation

Workout generator. Supercomputing cluster. Extensive Database. Exercise Variants.

This slide contains an excruciating amount of unnecessary words. A simple visual and the mention of a “workout app” would have done just fine. How are businesses that struggle to explain their offerings in simple terms to investors ever going to sign customers and gain traction in the real world?

Carta , previously known as eShares 2015: Raised $7M Series A $67.8M in Total Funding Still Operating

example of pitching presentation

We love this crisp title and description. The bullet points are entirely straightforward and have no jargon. They tear apart their competitor swiftly and succinctly to make you ask yourself “Why would I ever choose Solium?” That’s exactly what you want as a presenter.

7. Unusual Metrics

Tldr: be precise and transparent with your metrics., love with food 2012: raised $645k seed $2.09m in total funding still operating.

example of pitching presentation

How Love With Food concluded that their TAM (total addressable market) is $50 billion is completely unknown. At this point, an investor would have completely discounted their entire slide as useless and not valuable.

A TAM slide needs to sell a story to help investors understand your idea and how you’re going to get your valuation while also showing compelling metrics.

Mapme 2015: Raised $1M Seed $1M in Total Funding Still Operating

example of pitching presentation

However interesting it is to know how many people are interested in the cheese map of Belgium, this slide is impossible to quantify. If an investor cannot clearly determine how many people are in the target market, they will have no issue skipping out on your cheese maps.

YouTube 2005: Raised $3.5M Series A $11.5M in Total Funding Acquired by Google

example of pitching presentation

This metrics slide does not tell a clear story. Retrospectively, metrics had flatlined for YouTube at this point so they decided not to show any for this slide, and the fact that they shared a slide like this shows us they must have had investors already in the pipeline.

It would have been better for YouTube to be transparent with their metrics and not be overly confident. Even if your metrics aren’t incredible, make sure to be clear about what they are with your investors – they’ll find out in the future with their due diligence anyways.

Soundwave 2012: raised $1m seed $2.9m in total funding acquired by spotify.

example of pitching presentation

Soundwave has no context to where these numbers came from – for instance, where did this $5 billion spend come from? More than numbers, you should share metrics that help you tell your story.

Carta , formerly eShares 2015: Raised $7M Series A $67.8M in Total Funding Still Operating

example of pitching presentation

Just the top headline alone lets you know why this metrics slide is valuable. Another great thing about this slide is that they aren’t afraid to show negative data. Talk through any negative metrics in your investor meetings . Your transparency will create trust between you and your investors and will show you truly do understand your business and metrics. If you’re searching for a good sample pitch deck, this slide is worth referencing.

Front App 2016: Raised $10M Series A $13.2M in Total Funding Still Operating

example of pitching presentation

Talk about churn with your investors in your VC pitch deck! Even if your churn isn’t great, investors will discover it later on. Front App’s slide is another great example of honesty regarding metrics early on. Don’t leave anything hidden for investors to find out later.

8. ego flaunting.

TLDR: You’re raising money, not finding a date. Emphasize your qualifications and expertise, not your looks.

Crema.co 2016: Raised $325K Seed $325K in Total Funding Still Operating

example of pitching presentation

This slide tells us nothing about the qualifications of the team, all we know is that you have a nice smile. Again, no one cares what you look like. A team slide should show investors your experiences and qualifications for the position, not be a blown-up selfie.

TalentBase 2016: Raised $150K Seed $150K in Total Funding Still Operating

example of pitching presentation

This is a great team slide. Investors can see where people went to school and their past relevant experience. Team slides are all about creating trust between you and your potential investor. They should focus on your experience and explain why the investor should trust you with their limited amount of funds.

9. No Demo Videos

Tldr: don’t do demo videos – something can always go wrong. and even if it doesn’t it’s still awkward., cubeit 2014: raised $3m seed $3m in total funding acquihire by myntra.

example of pitching presentation

Just the thought of this demo video gives us anxiety. For example, let’s say you press play, and the audio doesn’t work. Or someone video conferences in, and they can’t hear you. Or the WiFi goes down. All sorts of catastrophes await with demo videos.

Or let’s say everything goes well and the video plays – do you watch people as they watch the video (awkward), are you looking at your computer (everyone starts doing the same and checks their email) – so many uncomfortable times await.

Demo videos suck – just don’t do them.

Crew 2014: Raised $2.1M Seed $9.8M in Total Funding Acquired by Dribble

example of pitching presentation

If you must do a live demo, use screenshots, or inVision to make it look like you are clicking a live website. A live demo lookalike without actually doing a live demo, what’s not to like! This investor deck example design is simple and to the point.

Our best advice for presenting an investor pitch deck? Try to do a live demo every time, for example, if you have drones, show them the drones in the parking lot. Just no videos.

10. snoozefest, wealthsimple 2014: raised ca$1.9m seed $77.9m in total funding still operating.

example of pitching presentation

There is absolutely nothing interesting about this slide, except that you are based in Canada. And as much as we like Canada, it’s just not that interesting. Make your pitch deck design fun and engaging, because chances are that this is the 100th pitch the investor has heard today, and maybe the 100th pitch you’ve done.

Make your slides dynamic so you can have fun pitching and inject that dynamism into your presentation.

LinkedIn 2004: Raised $10M Series B $103.2M in Total Funding Acquired by Microsoft

example of pitching presentation

So we’ll hand it to LinkedIn. 2004 was clearly not a great year for sophisticated slides or the mecca of pitch deck designs. Additionally, this is an excellent example of a great concept, with an extremely boring slide. Moreover, this ultra-simple slide is not giving us the enthusiasm and excitement that it should, and would benefit from some visual aspects. This isn’t the deck template you’d expect from one of today’s leading social tools with millions of users.

Opendoor 2016; Raised $150K Seed $150K in Total Funding Still Operating

example of pitching presentation

So this is a great slide and example pitch deck design. We are immediately drawn because of the compelling problem and the tangible metric. Additionally, investors can quickly see a pain point and a big opportunity. Opendoor also did a great job of picking a cool font and cool background that wasn’t too busy and still engaging. This slide gets investors excited, and therefore would ultimately get the pitcher fired up to tell the story and explain the pain points repeatedly.

“Just because you get funded does not mean you are successful.” – Vinod Khosla, Founder of Khosla Ventures

At the end of the day, hopefully, you’ll raise money, but remember raising money doesn’t mean that you are in any way successful, all it means is that you have another breath of air. A fresh round of capital for your technology, platform, software, etc. can come with new growth benchmarks, expectations of success, new management, and a host of other unique pressures and challenges. The difference between industry leaders (10%) and failed startups (the other 90%) often comes down to how you grow, secure and manage capital.

Once you do raise the money you’re looking for, be smart with how you spend it, and best of luck!

33 Legendary Startup Pitch Decks and What You Can Learn From Them [+10 Free Templates]

legendary startup pitch decks and what you can learn from them

A startup pitch deck is a brief presentation that provides investors with an overview of your new business and/or startup idea through presentation slides.

It usually focuses on showcasing your product, sharing your business model, giving a look into your monetization strategy, and introducing your team.

A startup pitch deck is an essential fundraising tool for successful startups, whether you’re looking to raise funding from $50,000, $500,000, or $50 million. However, an investor pitch deck is just one of the best pitch decks and examples we will share below.

best startup pitch deck examples for potential investors

Despite the brevity of the successful startup pitch decks, which usually run for 10 slides or less, creating a pitch deck that wins investment is not an easy task.

What Does a Successful Startup Pitch Deck Cover?

A great pitch deck covers key points through visuals and bullet points and usually has a competition slide, a problem slide, and a solution slide to explain your offering and the market.

Additionally, a business model slide and a team slide (if your business is developed enough to present these) can turn a good deck into a great startup pitch deck.

Don’t forget, a simple pitch deck is a good pitch deck—and you’re about to learn how to nail it.

33 Legendary Startup Pitch Deck Examples

1. facebook pitch deck.

Here’s a fun fact: Peter Thiel, the billionaire venture capitalist, and entrepreneur, was the first outside investor in Facebook back in 2004. That’s when Mark Zuckerberg first set out to turn his dorm room project into a lasting business. Zuckerberg received $500,000 from Peter Thiel.

facebook pitch deck

Facebook’s pitch deck was more of a media kit  of sorts. It was containing the company’s value proposition, key metrics, and marketing services that were used to sell ads to potential clients.

Favorite takeaway : The focus of the startup pitch deck was based on solid numbers such as user engagement, traffic, and growth trajectory.

2. Airbnb pitch deck

Airbnb is a platform that allows people to list, find, and rent lodging.

This company is one of the greatest startup success stories of our time.

The now famous Airbnb pitch deck has become one of the best pitch decks for inspiring entrepreneurs around the world.

airbnb's pitch deck, one of the best pitch deck examples

Favorite takeaway: The intro. It’s all about hooking your audience. You need to describe your business using as few words as possible. Imagine telling a 5-year-old what your business is about. If you can’t do that, it’s time to put some time into nailing it down.

3. Buffer pitch deck

Buffer is a social media scheduling platform that helps you schedule content for Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, and Pinterest.

buffer pitch deck example, one of the best startup pitch decks

The almighty startup pitch deck that helped Buffer to raise half a million dollars gained popularity by becoming one of the first pitch decks openly shared online. The founder decided to put it up to help other startups to raise funds.

Favorite takeaway: Similar to Facebook, the deck was based on solid numbers from Buffer’s users (e.g., 800 users, $150,000 annual revenue run rate, etc.)

4. Square pitch deck

Square is a company that allows merchants to accept mobile credit card payments via a dongle.

Favorite takeaway : Social proof! It doesn’t hurt to promote the management team if they’ve been with Twitter, Google, LinkedIn, PayPal, and more. It shows that your management team’s experience is an armor to the company. This detailed startup pitch deck outlines Square’s business model and a simple financial model that portrays its annual revenue and five-year growth rate.

5. LinkedIn pitch deck

Founded in 2002, LinkedIn is the top business-oriented social networking platform.

The company’s pitch talks a great deal about company values, the power of networking, and how it’s different from other social networks out there.

Favorite takeaway : The deck also provides an extensive analogy to showcase to investors what LinkedIn is. For example, it talks about “Web 1.0” vs. “Web 2.0”: Alta Vista was “Search 1.0”, and Google was “Search 2.0”. The deck talks about how LinkedIn is “Networking for Businesses 2.0”.

6. Mint pitch deck

Mint is a personal financial services tool that helps people track their spending and find ways to save money.

mint pitch deck, example of best pitch deck for inspiration

This startup pitch deck example was used in a competition and was never used for raising money, but it’s still a powerful deck that startups can learn from.

Favorite takeaway : This simple deck provides a clear value proposition to customers and investors. The creators of this deck also understood that one of the key concerns of an investor is the exit mechanism of his or her investments. I love how the deck highlights a number of exit strategy options.

7. MapMe pitch deck

MapMe allows users to create universally accessible (i.e., on smartphones, tablets, and computers) maps of anywhere they want with no coding required.

This startup deck was used to raise $1 million in seed funding.

mapme pitch deck example for startups

Social proof almost always works. The deck showed that the startup had over 20,000 unique visitors, 18,000 monthly alerts, and12 minutes average sessions on the site.

Favorite takeaway : The pitch deck has fewer than 13 slides but provides investors with knowledge of the traction the site got going viral on social media and its go-to-market strategy.

8. LaunchRock pitch deck

LaunchRock allows users to create landing pages and quickly get their startups known through social media, even before the launch of their full site.

launchrock pitch deck example from piktochart

9. Mixpanel pitch deck

Mixpanel is an advanced analytics platform for mobile and the web. They not only measure page views but also analyze the actions people take. This is the series-B startup pitch deck for Mixpanel that helped them raise over $65 million.

Moz started out as an SEO company but has pivoted to support marketers across all inbound marketing strategies.

11. Buzzfeed pitch deck

We all have a love-and-hate relationship with Buzzfeed, don’t we? I’m sure you’ve stumbled on their pages or watched their videos before. As of today, BuzzFeed has managed to raise over $240 million in investor capital (another great example of an investor pitch deck).

buzzfeed best pitch deck for potential investors

Favorite takeaway : SOCIAL PROOF! It doesn’t hurt to start a pitch deck with big numbers the company has, like the millions of users visiting the website on a monthly basis and quotations from large organizations such as CNN.

12. YouTube pitch deck

YouTube was acquired by Google in 2006 for $1.6 billion. Like Facebook, this company doesn’t require any introduction. Unfortunately, this is not the original deck. This is YouTube’s pitch deck to Sequoia Capital (one of the most established VC investors who’s often regarded as one of the industry’s best), which was released through a legal proceeding.

Favorite takeaway : The company wanted to be the primary outlet for video content, and it succeeded in doing just that. It goes to show that if you know what your product can do, are able to show its potential, and build on the momentum gained through early investments to create that, then you can achieve its potential. If you’re aiming to build an investor pitch deck to land a VC like Sequoia Capital, this presentation slide deck is a great template for you!

Dwolla is a payment solution that allows users to send, receive, and request funds from other users. This 18-slide startup pitch deck landed the company $16.5 million.

17. ZenPayRoll  (Now Gusto) pitch deck

Gusto (previously ZenPayroll) is a cloud-based solution tool for small businesses to pay employees.

When it comes to startups and entrepreneurs, getting that first big deal can be tricky. It can be hard to put your business idea forward in a way that’s going to convince potential investors or partners. This is where pitch deck presentations come in handy as they are often short and precise. The goal is to explain your idea in a way that gets straight to the point and is easy to understand. These quick, punchy presentations are critical for those looking to make a strong first impression and secure funding for their business venture. Let’s talk about what a pitch presentation is and how you can create one with the help of Prezi.

What is a pitch presentation?

To get a better understanding of what a pitch presentation really is, let’s look at some of the important elements that make one:

Conciseness: It’s typically short, usually 10-20 slides. This fast pace enables the presenter to captivate the audience and maintain attention.

Clarity: The aim is to keep the content clear and straightforward, avoiding complicated jargon so that the message is understood.

Powerful storytelling: It will often tell an interesting story about the problem being solved, the solution offered, and the potential market opportunity.

Key information: Because of its fast-paced nature, it will often be packed with vital information like the business model, financial projections, and the unique value proposition of the product or service being pitched.

Appealing visuals: Like other styles of presentation, having visuals that can draw in the audience is a must. Pitch deck presentations will often use graphics and minimal text to convey information better.

To get a visual understanding of what a pitch presentation is, explore the following pitch presentation:

The evolution of pitch presentations: a look back and ahead

Ever wondered how pitch presentations became such a big deal? They started as simple PowerPoint slides but have evolved into something much more dynamic. This journey reflects changes in business, technology, and what investors look for. In the early days, pitch decks were pretty straightforward – just a few slides outlining a business idea. But as technology advanced, so did the expectations. Now, we see pitch presentations with interactive elements, attractive visuals, and even storytelling elements. This evolution shows how we’ve learned to communicate complex ideas more effectively. Understanding this history helps us understand how pitch decks have evolved into what they are today.

Is a pitch deck the right presentation style for me?

A pitch deck is perfect if you’re looking to present a business idea, especially if you’re aiming to attract investors or partners. It’s designed to be concise yet impactful, focusing on the key aspects of your business or project. Think of it as showcasing your business- you’ve got a limited amount of time to make a strong impression. So, if you’re in the early stages of a startup, seeking funding, or trying to win over some stakeholders with a clear, compelling story about your business or idea, a pitch presentation could be just what you need.

People who might also benefit from pitch presentations

Pitch presentations are a versatile tool that can greatly benefit a wide range of individuals and organizations. We’ve discussed the role of pitch decks for startups and entrepreneurs, so let’s look at some other instances where these presentations might be particularly useful:

  • Business executives: Established business owners can use pitch decks to propose new projects or strategies to stakeholders, boards, and investors.
  • Sales and marketing professionals: To pitch products or services to potential clients or partners, highlighting their unique selling points.
  • Non-profit organizations: For presenting their mission, impact, and funding needs to donors, sponsors, or grant agencies.
  • Researchers and academics: To secure funding or collaboration for research projects, especially when presenting to funding bodies or at academic conferences.
  • Inventors and innovators: To attract investors, partners, or attention to their new inventions or innovations.
  • Freelancers and consultants: To pitch their services and unique value proposition to potential clients or agencies.

What makes a good pitch deck presentation?

When we talk about pitch presentations, it’s important to compare the differences between a great pitch deck and the ones that just don’t hit the mark.

What a pitch deck should look like

A successful pitch deck should have a clean, uncluttered design . This way your audience can take in the information without being distracted by over complicated slides. Any images used should be of high quality, and be relevant to the text. A pitch presentation should flow logically , so the information provided tells a story about what you’re aiming to achieve.

The colors used should match that of your brand, often logos and fonts will correspond with the theme of the brand, organization, or company. This is a great way to reinforce who you are and what you stand for. A good pitch presentation will captivate the audience by using each slide to convey a single key point, this way, the message is concise and easily absorbed.

Pitfalls to avoid

Now, let’s talk about what a pitch presentation shouldn’t look like. If you want to entice your audience, don’t cram too much information onto your slides . This is going to overwhelm your audience and make their attention span drop. Don’t stray away from key points by including irrelevant information. You want your pitch deck to persuade people to take action and have faith in you and your product, so don’t go off on a tandem.

Use a language tone that’s relatable to everyone – don’t use overly technical terms or industry-specific jargon. This can be off-putting for potential investors who don’t work in your field. One of the biggest mistakes you could make is to be inconsistent with your theme, color, and fonts. Remember, the idea is to appear professional, and inconsistency screams amateur.

Things to consider when preparing to create your pitch presentation

Although it might be appealing to dive straight into making your presentation, there are certain points you should consider to get the best out of your pitch. Here are some things to think about when planning:

Know your audience

Consider who you’re presenting to and include criteria that are going to be appealing to them. For instance, what resonates with venture capitalists may be different from what appeals to potential partners or customers.

Engaging storyline

You want to hold your audience’s attention throughout the whole presentation, so tell your story in a way that builds anticipation and makes them want more.

Keep each slide simple. Your audience will respond better to clear, concise content that’s not too busy and complicated. Keep text easily readable and appropriate for all levels of knowledge.

Key messages

Plan out the purpose of each slide beforehand, that way you can be sure the key messages come across well.

You can include things like graphs or charts to simplify complex data, but do this in a way that doesn’t overcrowd the slides. Remember to stay consistent with colors and fonts to reinforce clarity.

Data and validation

Do your research when preparing to make your pitch presentation. It’s crucial to back up your claims, such as market research, growth projections, or case studies. Using real-world examples is a good way to back up your credibility.

Business model

Think about how you’re going to explain your business model in a way that comes across clearly. Always be honest about your revenue streams, pricing strategies, and your position in the market.

Investors often invest in people as much as they do ideas, so think about how you can highlight the strengths of yourself and your team.

You need to clearly state what you’re asking for. Whether it’s funding, support, or a partnership, make sure your audience knows what you need from them.

Practice your pitch so that it flows well and fits with the time constraints. Rehearsals are great for realizing flaws, which means you can rectify where needed to ensure the best possible pitch on the day. Be prepared to answer questions and address potential concerns- you can do this by listing some possible queries and preparing an adequate answer.

Beginning and ending

How can you draw the audience in from the minute you start speaking? A successful pitch presentation often starts with a bang, such as a powerful punch line, a vibrant image, or a brain teaser. When it comes to ending your pitch, summarize the main points and offer a chance for discussion.

Presenting your pitch deck presentation

Your presenting skills must be just as effective as the pitch presentation you’ve created. Imagine spending all that time and effort on making each slide perfect, to go and blow your opportunity by poorly presenting it. Here are some tips to help you own the stage for your pitch:

Body language

  • Posture: Stand tall and proud. A good posture reflects confidence and keeps you physically engaged.
  • Gestures: Gestures should be natural and purposeful. For example, you might use hand gestures to emphasize important points. Avoid being overly dramatic with gestures as this can be distracting.
  •  Movement: Moving can add energy to your presentation, but be careful not to pace around the stage, as this can make you appear nervous. A simple step forward when you’re reaching the punchline of your story can elevate impact. Similarly, turning your body to face different sections of the audience can make everyone feel included.

Facial expressions

  • Eye contact: Make eye contact with your audience, and maintain it. Don’t just focus on one area, move your gaze around the room to add a personal element to your presentation. This is going to help you build a connection and keep them engaged.
  • Smiling: Smile where appropriate. This is going to make you seem approachable and passionate about your subject. However, you don’t want to unnerve your audience by wearing a forced smile throughout the whole presentation.
  • Expressiveness: Your facial expressions should match the tone of what you’re saying. They can be a powerful way of transporting emotions from the screen onto the audience.

Voice control

  • Volume: You want everyone in the room to hear you, so speak loudly, but avoid shouting.
  • Pace: Remember that your audience needs to clearly hear every word for maximum impact, you can do this by keeping a moderate pace throughout. Speaking too fast can be hard to keep up with, and talking too slowly can become boring.
  • Tone: Use a varied tone to maintain interest, as monotone speech can be disengaging. For instance, you could change the pitch and intensity of your tone when discussing something positive or exciting.
  • Duration: Stick to the allotted time for your pitch presentation. Running too long can lose your audience’s interest, while cutting it too short may not deliver enough information.
  • Pauses: Pauses are handy for creating suspense, or allowing key points to sink in. They can also be helpful for a smooth transformation from one topic to another.

Dealing with nerves

  • Practice: The more familiar you are with your content, the less nervous you’re going to be. Practice your body language cues, speaking clearly, and using the right facial expressions.
  • Visualization: Envision a successful pitch presentation. It’s when we worry about the things that could go wrong that causes anxiety to kick in.
  • Relaxation techniques: Before taking the stage, simple techniques can help with nerves, such as mindfulness practices and progressive muscle relaxation.
  • Deep breathing: Practice deep breathing to control nerves and keep a steady voice. This helps in delivering a calm and confident pitch.

If you’re struggling with nerves, watch the following video on how to not be nervous for a presentation:

Audience interaction

  • Question prompts: To make your pitch presentation more interactive, encourage audience participation and questions.
  • Read the room: Always be aware of the audience’s reactions and adjust accordingly. If they seem disinterested, you might need to change your approach or pace.

As a pitch deck presenter, your role is to deliver your content in a way that makes an impact. Mastery of body language, voice, and timing all play a crucial role in yielding the results you want.

Successful business pitch presentation examples

Many well-known companies famously used pitch decks in their early stages to secure funding and partnerships. Here’s some you may know:

Back in 2008, Airbnb was just starting out and needed funding, so they created a pitch deck. This wasn’t just any pitch deck—it was really clear and straightforward, showing off their business model and what they hoped to achieve. They ended up raising $600k from an angel investment round. Their pitch presentation was so successful that people still talk about it today. It’s a classic example of how a good pitch can really set a company on the path to success.

Did you know about Uber’s beginnings? On their ninth anniversary, Garrett Camp, one of the co-founders, shared their first pitch deck. It was a 25-slide presentation that they used way back when they were just starting out. This pitch presentation was a major part of their strategy and really helped in the company’s early growth and evolution. It’s pretty impressive to think how those early slides contributed to making Uber the giant it is today.

We all know how significant Facebook is when it comes to social media platforms, but it’s all down to their original pitch presentation back in 2004 that propelled them into such success. The pitch deck contained mix-and-match slides for summarizing Facebook’s value proposition, key metrics, and audience demographics. Shortly after the launch of facebook.com, Eduardo Saverin, who was 21 at the time, took their presentation to New York. He was there to pitch Facebook’s Ad platform to potential clients. Now, fast forward to today, Facebook for Business has grown massively. It’s the second biggest digital advertising platform, just behind Google, and holds more than 25% of the market share.

These examples are not only inspirational but show just how important pitch presentations are. A strong pitch is critical for making a good first impression, forming business relations, and opening up opportunities for scaling your business.

Final thoughts on pitch deck presentations

To wrap up, pitch decks are more than just presentations; they’re your chance to make an impact. They’re vital for anyone looking to get their idea off the ground, especially in the startup world. So when you’re putting one together, keep it straightforward, focus on your key points, and make sure it reflects what you and your business are all about. A well-crafted pitch presentation can open doors, attract investment, and set the stage for your future success. Remember, simplicity and clarity are your best tools. Good luck, and here’s to making your ideas shine!

Four tips for creating a great elevator pitch

Here are four easy ways to recreate the pitch deck examples above or build your own pitch from a template.

Create a visual style for your sales pitches

A visual style or theme creates flow and sophistication in any presentation. These involve using recurring elements in a subtle and obvious manner.

For example, this Venngage template uses our color gradient along with elegant and bright icons.

Company Media Kit Partnership Pitch Deck Template

Choose visual elements whose characteristics become the pitch deck’s focal point. Great pitch decks use the brand’s colors and visual motifs to keep the brand top of mind.

Give an overview of your business model

Pitch decks act as content anchors that guide your client toward your topic’s main points.

All the other information in your pitch deck or the explanations in your presentation will be aimed at supplementing that data.

Like this Uber elevator pitch template that emphasizes customer pain points and how the business will solve them.

Examples of added data include situational examples, charts and graphs and case studies .

Focus on your unique proposition

Your pitch deck has a central idea that is its unique selling proposition. Pitch deck creators build their pitch ideas around this aspect.

As a result, they’ll have a solid, communicative and persuading pitch deck that convinces investors.

Simplify hard concepts in your sales pitch

Scientific knowledge is enriching to those who understand its meaning.

Hard concepts, long-running and poorly constructed sentences and jargon make reading challenging for investors who have a very short time to spare.

This deck ensures that information isn’t overwhelming, either in the overview or the traction slide.

Global Corporation Pitch Deck Template

Make sure to simplify hard concepts and use simple words. That’s what the best pitch decks do.

Do you know what giants like Uber, Facebook, Airbnb, and Intercom have in common? When they were fledgling companies, they secured funding using a pitch deck.

That’s why understanding how to create a winning pitch deck is key to a startup’s success.

In this article, we’re going to break down everything you need to know about pitch decks so you can reign in investors and get your company the funding it needs.

Pitch Decks Explained

At its core, a pitch deck is a collection of slides, typically between 10 and 20, that showcase your business plan to attract investors or secure VC funding.

A pitch deck shows:

  • What problem your product solves
  • How you plan to corner the market
  • The key players on your team
  • Financials and projections
  • Your go-to-market strategy

The goal is to entice investors with this unique opportunity. However, it’s important to understand that it’s not about getting them to say “yes” at the end. It’s to avoid getting an outright “no.”

Remember, investors and VCs are constantly hounded by startups, so they have their own criteria they use to weed out the ones not worth their time and money.

Your pitch deck needs to set you apart from the competition and get you through the initial round of evaluation. Venngage’s example below is a great pointer:

pitch deck example

The Anatomy of a Pitch Deck

Of course, every startup and each investor/VC are unique – so no two pitch decks will be identical. However, there are some core elements they all share and points they should convey.

The basics of a pitch deck should include:

  • Company introduction and overview
  • Your company vision/mission
  • The problem
  • Your unique solution
  • The market size
  • Your business plan
  • The customer
  • The competition
  • Proof of concept/market validation
  • Funding requirement and allocation

Some slides can be swapped, but these are generally what investors want to see and know. If your pitch deck hits these key points, then you’re already on the right track.

How to Create a Pitch Deck

You have three options to use when you want to create a pitch deck, which include the following:

1. Traditional Tools for Creating Pitch Decks

PowerPoint is the OG pitch deck creator, where you can create static slides to cycle through. You can also use Google Slides to the same effect. While they are easy to use and Google Slides is free, they leave a lot to be desired in terms of customization options and integrations.

2. Use Pre-Built Pitch Deck Templates

Another option is to use pre-built templates from tools like Canva or Visme . These work in a pinch, but they also lack any features to really help your pitch deck stand out. And while you can customize the templates, you still run the risk of having a cookie-cutter pitch deck. That’s why we recommend option three.

3. Dedicated Presentation Creators

With a dedicated presentation creator, you unlock the possibility of creating a dynamic and engaging pitch deck that really resonates with investors.

SlideDog , for example, lets you combine multiple media elements into a single playlist. This includes websites, videos, pictures, PowerPoint slides, and more to create a truly unique and compelling pitch deck to win investors over.

Why 99% of Pitch Decks Fail

Here’s a truth you need to understand: an overwhelming majority of pitch decks do not secure funding at 99%. It sucks to spend hundreds of hours and thousands of dollars preparing your pitch deck, only for another startup to get the funds instead.

Here are 4 key reasons we’ve seen pitch decks fail:

1. They Didn’t Tell a Story

Storytelling is a valuable skill, especially when looking to persuade someone to part with their money. Of course, you know your company’s vision and believe in its growth potential. But you need a story to help convey the message to investors.

The story you tell needs to create a narrative using real-life examples and social proof, data visualizations, and what sets your business apart from the rest. Remember, investors are looking for the next unicorn. They want to back visionaries and disruptors, so make sure your story shows how you can achieve that.

2. They Were Boring

Another trap startups fall into is creating bland and forgettable presentations. You want to create a pitch deck that is memorable by including clear and engaging information that’s visually appealing. That means you need to go beyond traditional presentation methods like PowerPoint.

Again, we recommend using SlideDog to create dynamic and aesthetically pleasing pitch decks to attract investors.

3. They Didn’t Adapt

One key factor that separates pitch deck successes and failures is tracking engagement and getting feedback to make improvements. You can’t get this type of data using traditional presentation tools.

This is another area where SlideDog shines. It features an interactive element that lets you get live audience feedback using an anonymous live polling.

This can help inform you on what’s working and what needs work. With this type of data on hand, you can give investors exactly what they’re looking for.

4. They Didn’t Answer Vital Questions

Your pitch deck needs to answer critical questions every investor will have. If you don’t, your pitch has failed before the first slide.

Some of the questions you should have clear answers for include the following:

  • What’s the problem your solution solves?
  • What’s your differentiating factor?
  • What is your target market?
  • What do you need funding for?
  • What are the financial projections?
  • What’s your GTM (go-to-market) strategy?
  • Do you have a proven track record/proof of concept?
  • What experience do you and your team have?
  • What does the competitive landscape look like?
  • What’s your business model?

Of course, you want the answers to the questions to pop up naturally through the story you’re telling. However, if you don’t have compelling answers to them, it’s less likely investors will believe in your dream.

So, when crafting your pitch deck, keep these questions at the forefront of your mind.

Pitch Deck Best Practices

1. follow the “less is more” principle with your pitch deck.

Your pitch deck should be easy to read and understand at a glance. Avoid having large text blocks and keep things simple and sweet. Remember, investors are very busy and value their time – and you should, too.

Also, keep industry jargon to a minimum so it’s easy for investors to follow along. For example, if your company is SaaS, you don’t need to get into the nitty-gritty of your program’s backend and the technical aspects.

Use bullet points and short sentences to highlight key points you want to convey. Include visual aids like charts and graphs to help investors visualize metrics. All of these elements will help your pitch say much more while using less real estate on the screen.

an example of a good pitch deck

2. Keep Your Brand Present Throughout the Pitch Deck

Use your brand color scheme, logo, font, and personality throughout your pitch deck to help keep your company in the back of investors’ minds during your presentation. All of these elements work together to create a cohesive pitch deck and make it more original and professional.

3. Include a CTA and Contact Details

Very rarely will an investor say “yes” right then and there. That’s why your pitch deck should include a CTA (or call to action) that guides investors on what to do next.

You will also want to include contact information so they can get in touch when they’re ready to move forward.

The last thing you want is to create a winning pitch deck, present it to investors, and wow them, but they don’t have any way to reach out. That’s money you could be potentially leaving on the table.

5 Examples of Great Pitch Decks

1. airbnb's pitch deck.

airbnb pitch deck

In 2008, Airbnb used this pitch deck to secure $600,000 from Sequoia Capital. Airbnb is a unicorn company that completely transformed the short-term rental and hospitality industry. Since its inception, Airbnb has grown to a market cap of over $80 billion.

The important slide to pick out from Airbnb’s pitch is the business model slide, which shows how they plan to generate revenue. For every transaction on the platform, Airbnb takes a 10% cut. We also like the simplicity of the problem slide, where they lay out the mark issues in 3 easy-to-understand points.

If you’re looking for a template to build your pitch deck around, you can’t go wrong with this one.

2. Facebook's Pitch Deck

facebook's pitch deck

Another behemoth that shows the power of a pitch deck is Facebook (now called Meta). Founded in 2004 by Eduardo Saverin and Mark Zuckerberg, they put together a pitch deck/media kit that showed Facebook’s value proposition and key metrics.

Since Facebook wasn’t making money at the time, they focused more on their user engagement and growth potential. This approach was good enough to net Facebook over $2 billion in funding before its IPO.

One thing we’d like to point out is Facebook’s pitch deck doesn’t have a “problem” slide. That’s because Facebook was in a unique position since it catered to university and college students who wanted to connect in the digital age.

3. Uber's Pitch Deck

uber's pitch deck

Back when it was called UberCab, Uber founders created their winning pitch deck in 2008 to secure around $25 billion before IPO. It was a simple idea: an app that calls you a cab within just a few minutes. No more standing on the side of the street with your hand out to hail a cab.

What we like about Uber’s pitch deck is how it accurately conveys how it can disrupt the taxi industry forever. Information is displayed visually, using objects and simple, short copy.

And it’s kept good on the promise now that Uber is available in over 70 countries worldwide.

4. WeWork's Pitch Deck

wework pitch deck monetization

Although it’s fallen from grace, we’d be remiss if we didn’t include WeWork’s pitch deck that helped them secure over $1 billion in funding based on a $10 billion valuation. Taking a page from Uber and Airbnb, WeWork sought to transform the way we work in the digital age by offering state-of-the-art co-working spaces for a monthly cost.

WeWork relied heavily on data, projections, and visual aids to showcase the potential of their business plan. Of course, it also helped they were able to partner with big companies like Coca-Cola through an affiliate scheme.

However, it’s clear WeWork founders were confident in their business model and weren’t afraid to show it. So, if you know you’ve got a great business plan and grow with the right support behind it, let it show in your pitch deck.

5. Intercom's Pitch Deck

intercom's pitch deck

Founded in 2011, Intercom is one of the biggest players in the business communications space. And their amazing pitch deck is one of the reasons they were able to grow to be so massive.

One thing to note about this deck is how the Intercom is ever-present throughout the pitch. The bullet point font and calm, blue background add a bit of personality that helped Intercom stick out investors’ minds.

Another thing to point out is their pitch deck is only 8 slides. Remember, you don’t need to overload your audience with information. Keep your pitch deck to the most pertinent info to make it more impactful.

15 creative elevator pitch examples for every scenario

A good elevator pitch can be the difference between landing your next big opportunity or falling short of the competition. But the reality is, people want to have meaningful conversations without the forced sales pitch. So how do you pitch yourself during a job interview or client meeting with authenticity?

First things first: What is an elevator pitch?

An elevator pitch, also known as an elevator speech, is an opportunity to share a quick summary of yourself and your product offerings. But a pitch can also be your chance at making a real connection that you can use later down the road. It’s not always an immediate benefit, but you should be prepared for any scenario in which you could be giving an elevator pitch.

In reality, most people have given an elevator pitch whether they realize it or not. That’s because there are many different types of pitches—from interviews to new business opportunities. That makes preparing for your next pitch an important step in marketing both yourself and your company.

When it comes to figuring out who to deliver your pitch to, you should aim for the best point of contact, not just the highest point of contact. Choosing connections that are related to or interested in what you’re offering will give you a better chance at making your sale.

How long should an elevator pitch be?

One of the biggest unknowns about creating sample elevator pitches is how long they should be. In most cases, it will depend on what it’s about and who you’re pitching. A good rule of business etiquette is to make it as short as possible by carefully selecting the most important points.

A study conducted by Microsoft found that the average person has an attention span of around eight seconds, meaning you’ll have to fight for that undivided attention. That’s no small task. So when it comes to a great elevator pitch, aim to keep it around 30 seconds—though the exact length can vary depending on your industry and what you’re pitching.

When looking at pitch length based on industry, each one differs to some degree. Let’s take marketing for example. Your pitch opportunities will likely be to customers that come across your brand. And in that case, you have very little time to get your message across—whether it’s text, video, or imagery. But when it comes to sales, you may get the opportunity to expand your elevator pitch past 30 seconds. You will likely have plenty of networking opportunities where people are more than willing to listen to what you have to say. It really just depends on your medium and the audience’s eagerness to listen.

But what if you can’t cut your elevator pitch down to 30 seconds? It may seem like your brand is too complicated to distill down to such a short timeframe, but if you’re pitching to the right audience you shouldn’t have that problem. Make sure you pitch to people related to your industry or a tangential audience that will be able to interpret your offerings.

How to write an elevator pitch

When it comes to writing an elevator pitch, it can be hard to decipher important facts from unimportant ones—this is why knowing how to effectively communicate in the workplace is important in the first place. For example, while it’s good to personalize your communication tactics wherever possible, it’s not necessary to give prospects an entire history lesson on your business. Only the most recent and relevant details should be included. To get started creating your own pitch, you first need to understand the basic components that make up any good elevator pitch.

A foolproof elevator pitch template

Introduce yourself

All good pitches start with a short introduction. It could be as simple as stating your name and who you work for if those details apply. But the more personal you can make it, the more natural your elevator pitch will seem. Body language is also an important part of a solid introduction, as is eye contact. Here are a few tips to keep in mind when introducing yourself to a new prospect.

Greet your audience in a way that’s appropriate for the occasion. Go formal for a business pitch or more casual for a fun event. With business meetings and networking events being held virtually, you’ll need to get creative with your introductions over video chat. You could even start with a lighthearted joke to break the ice. But whatever you do, make sure it’s relevant to your audience.

Present the problem

All solutions start with a problem. Whatever you or your business is trying to solve, it’s important to get the point across early on in your elevator pitch to set the theme for the rest of your speech. An example problem: coordinating work between teams is chaotic.

If possible, relate the problem back to your audience by using real-world examples. This will help make the problem more relevant and, hopefully, grab your audience’s attention. If your problem isn’t easy to explain, try using more than one example or a visual to really paint a picture for your audience.

Offer the solution

If the problem is what draws the audience in, then the solution is what hooks them. This is your time to show them why they need your help. Here’s an example solution: Asana gives teams a system to organize and manage work so they know what to do, why it matters, and how to get it done.

The solution is arguably the most important part of an elevator pitch, so spend time perfecting it. If you’re pitching for a business, it’s likely the quick solution pitch has already been created. But again, it’s always better to personalize your pitch. So don’t be afraid to tweak it to fit your audience. If pitching for yourself, talk about the unique skills you’ve developed and why they would be beneficial to your prospect.

Explain your value proposition

Now that you’ve piqued your audience’s attention, it’s time to seal the deal by explaining why your solution is better than anyone else's. An example value proposition is: Asana is the only platform that connects goals with the work needed to achieve them.

The value proposition differs from the solution by focusing on why your audience should use your solution over a competitor’s. If you don’t have that answer just yet, perform a competitive analysis to compare your offerings or look to your executive summary.

If your market is extremely niche and you don’t have a clear differentiator or significant competition, look to communication and interface capabilities. Consider why your idea or solution is original enough that someone would want to use it.

Engage the audience

While most of the hard work is done, it’s important to engage your audience with a compliment or question before you part ways. Always err on the side of being genuine rather than delivering a scripted goodbye.

There is no right or wrong way to engage your audience. While ending with a question can create a dialogue between you and your audience, a genuine compliment can go a long way. Think about what made you want to pitch them in the first place and use that to end the conversation. Lastly, don’t forget to swap contact information, such as a business card, if you don’t already have it.

A foolproof elevator pitch template

Now that you know the basic components of a pitch, the next step is creating your very own elevator pitch. This template can work for just about any situation, from a job interview to pitching a small business or startup. That’s because we analyzed some of the most famous templates from industry experts—from Harvard research to Guy Kawasaki’s art of pitching—to create a foolproof template that will work in any situation.

Plug your information into our elevator pitch template to draft a quick speech. While you won’t necessarily recite it word for word, it’s a great model to keep in mind in case you find yourself in a position where you’re not prepared with a personalized pitch.

Whether you’re looking for a pitch template for a job interview or for pitching your business, this template is a foolproof example for any situation you might find yourself in.

General elevator pitch template

Use our elevator pitch template to start constructing your speech by adding statistics and personalized greetings where needed. This template incorporates the four parts explained above to hit all of the important details of a good elevator pitch.

Introduction : “Hi I’m [name], a [position title] at [company name]. It’s great to meet you!”

Problem : “Since you work with [company name or industry] I figured you’d be interested to know that [problem + interesting statistic].”

Solution : “The great part about working at [your company’s name] is that we’ve been able to fix just that problem by [solution].”

Value proposition : “In fact, we’re the only company that offers [value proposition].”

CTA : “I think our solution could really help you. Are you available this week to speak further on this?”

Don’t be afraid to change up your pitch template based on your personality and professional expertise. We’ve also included personalized 30-second elevator pitch examples below to inspire personal facts you can add to create a more engaging speech .

30-second elevator pitch examples

Let’s dive into the best 30-second elevator pitch examples to help you create a pitch that’s both engaging and informative. Our examples take inspiration from the four elements included in the template above, to demonstrate how you'd pitch project management software to  increase productivity . Try a few or try them all to find one that best fits your personality and value proposition.

Example 1: Short and sweet

This example is one of the most common you’ll come across. That doesn’t necessarily mean that it’s the best, but it’s a great example of a quick and easy pitch that fits almost any situation. When working on this type of elevator pitch, be sure to keep it as short and to the point as possible. Try to stick closely to the 30 seconds or less rule since the point is to be brief and transparent.

The problem is that work is chaotic no matter what industry you’re in or how good you are at your job. But a good project management software can help improve productivity and communication. I haven’t missed a deadline in years. If you’re interested in how it can help your team, give me a call and I can take you through some numbers.

Example 2: Relatable over reliable

Sometimes the best way to grab your audience’s attention is to reel them in with a personal anecdote they’ll relate to. While it’s still important to drive home your solution, this approach puts more weight on making a personal connection rather than an immediate sale.

It’s so great to finally meet you. How is business going? I heard you’ve been struggling with communication issues. My team and I struggled with that too. It wasn’t until we added project management software into our routine that we really saw an improvement in teamwork and overall communication. I hope you find a solution that works for your team.

Example 3: Savvy with stats

Start your pitch off with a hook by dropping an attention-grabbing statistic. It’s important to have hard data to back up your statistics to ensure their accuracy before pitching. When it comes to a statistics pitch, it’s a good idea to come full circle at the end and connect how your solution can help solve that statistic.

Did you know that despite having more ways to connect remotely, 60% of workers’ time is spent on work coordination with just 26% spent on skilled work and 14% on strategy? No wonder teams need help with project management. Implementing project management tools can decrease time spent on work coordination and help increase skilled work.

The savvy with stats elevator pitch

Example 4: Question everything

This example uses questions to make your pitch easily comprehensible. It also forces the audience to join in on the conversation rather than just presenting them with a speech. Try starting and ending with a question that makes the audience think about your pitch long after you leave the room.

Do you ever feel like you spend too much time on work about work? I’ve talked to so many people who share the same frustrations. I used to work long hours every day just trying to catch up. But do you know what? Ever since we started using project management software, I've been able to get so much more work done. Have you tried anything similar in the past?

Example 5: Comedic twist

If your pitch isn’t about a serious topic, you can add comedic twists to engage the audience. This is especially useful if giving a presentation. Add a GIF or quick funny clip in between slides to lighten the mood. If using this example, be sure it fits the occasion and tone of your company.

Did you know that the average person can only pay attention for eight seconds? That’s not even long enough to place my coffee order in the morning. Maybe that’s why my barista always gets it wrong. But seriously, I think that’s why so many companies struggle to hit deadlines.

Example 6: Tell a story

Use customer testimonials or your own personal story to paint a picture for the audience. This can be especially helpful if your topic is hard to explain in 30 seconds or less. Telling a story is a great way to add a relatable twist.

We have a customer that transitioned to a fully remote workforce this year and needed help making sure deadlines were met. With our help, they were able to get up to 10% of their time back in their day and focus on more important things like strategic planning.

Example 7: Emotionally driven

While this type of pitch may be more difficult to create, you have a better chance of winning over your audience if you can make your pitch emotionally driven. It’s also more likely they’ll be willing to share the experience with someone else down the road. It’s important to keep the emotions on the lighter side to prevent the conversation from steering too dark. Here is an example to inspire your own speech.

It may seem like any other tool, but when you look closely it really is helping teams connect. And not just that, but it’s helping cultivate teams that actually enjoy working together on new projects. That’s something that’s hard to come by, but something everyone is looking for.

Example 8: Write it first

While most speeches start by writing a general outline, you can opt to write the entire pitch from start to finish. This tends to create a thought-provoking and poetic flow once you do present your pitch. You’ll have to memorize this pitch, so practicing is a key element to this strategy.

Hi, my name is Kelly! It’s great to meet you. You work for Apollo Enterprises, right? I’ve heard a lot about them. I actually heard that you’re looking for project management help. In my experience, any organization—whether sales or suppliers—needs help coordinating work and team communication. Work can be rather chaotic, especially now, without it. That’s why we’ve created a software tool that helps both individuals and teams organize their projects and communications all in one place. Have you ever thought about using something similar?

Example 9: End with a one-liner

Making a grand exit doesn’t come easily, but if you can pull it off your audience is sure to be impressed. Stay away from cliche one-liners and make your closing authentic to you. The point here is to leave them with a thought that they’ll remember after the meeting is over. Consider sharing a surprising statistic or question relevant to their business.

Over one-quarter (26%) of all deadlines are missed each week because of a lack of clarity. But with the right project management tools, that number could be much lower. So the question is, can your business afford not to use project management software?

The one-liner elevator pitch

Elevator pitch examples by scenario

Now that we’ve covered the types of pitch examples, let’s dive into example elevator pitches for different scenarios. Whether you’re pitching for your business or yourself, you can use an elevator pitch to organize your thoughts and prepare for the real deal. Let’s look at key tips for any situation you may find yourself in.

Example 10: Networking event

A networking event is probably the most common scenario you’ll run into. And with the new virtual-first culture, it may be even more challenging to make meaningful connections over video chat. That’s why it’s so important to prepare an elevator pitch that’s compelling no matter where you’re pitching it from. While most salespeople pitch casually in this environment, you may get the opportunity to meet an important executive. In which case, you’ll want to be prepared with a versatile pitch template.

Great to meet you, I’m Kelly with Apollo Enterprises. We’ve been able to improve productivity and collaboration for teams all over the world. If you ever need help with project management, just reach out. I think we could make a huge impact on your company. I’ll make sure to keep your contact information handy as well.

Example 11: Job interview

Looking for a new job or have career fairs coming up? Most interviews—whether with human resources, a recruiter, or a hiring manager—start with some form of the phrase, “Tell me about yourself.” This is an opportunity for job seekers to briefly explain themselves and their professional experience using industry buzzwords and key skills. Having an elevator pitch ready can ensure that you’re prepared when the opportunity presents itself.

I’m Kelly, a specialist at Apollo Enterprises. I chose a career in project management because I had a passion for it, and now I can proudly say that I’ve been able to make a real difference in people’s lives. That’s why I’m looking to continue my career with an employer who shares those same values. I know my unique skills can make a big impact at your company because I’ve proven my results with a few key projects.

Example 12: Formal meeting

You’ve landed the meeting, congratulations! Now is the time to create a formal elevator pitch to really get them interested. When presenting a formal pitch, a presentation can be a great addition to traditional elevator speech examples. But whether or not you choose to create a presentation, this meeting is about selling your product in the most professional way possible. So dress the part and don’t forget your unique selling proposition.

I took a look at your current productivity figures and noticed an opportunity for improvement. With our project management software, you could get back up to 10% more of your workday. Not only would that mean more work getting done, but it would also have a positive impact on the overall success of your business. Not to mention, our tool is the only one in the industry that has goal capabilities to ensure teams stay on track.

Example 13: Sales pitch

Professionals often pitch traditional sales jargon, but the real key is creating a human connection while lightly sprinkling in what you’re selling. Start with a personal story or light-hearted introduction instead of the typical sales presentation. You can also prepare by creating sales team goal templates to ensure your team is on the same page.

Our team really struggled to transition to a remote workforce. Communication wasn’t organized and people struggled to find the correct information to complete projects. But, thankfully, we found a solution to our problem. Implementing project management tools not only improved productivity but also improved overall teamwork. Every company prefers different tools, but I can say without a doubt that our software was the best at connecting goals with the work needed to achieve them.

The sales elevator pitch

Example 14: Social introduction

Now, more than ever, professionals are choosing to meet virtually rather than face-to-face. Whether you’re chatting over LinkedIn or have a virtual meeting set up, it’s important to make your pitch personal and use clear visuals to help sell your point. Here’s a great example of a social media pitch.

Thanks for connecting! I noticed that your competitors are outperforming you when it comes to year-over-year growth. I took the liberty of doing a competitive analysis and didn’t find any outlying problems. I’m wondering if it could be an issue with productivity. How has the transition to remote work been? If you’re interested, I could run you through some productivity figures if you were to add project management tools to your current processes.

Example 15: Entrepreneurs and business owners

Pitching to a business owner is much different than pitching to an executive. They can be harder to sell because they are often hesitant about new investments. The most important tip is to use examples as they pertain to the business when explaining a problem and solution.

I love your products at Apollo Enterprises. I’m a huge proponent of your mission. I did realize that there may be some opportunities to improve productivity and collaboration internally. Have you ever considered project management software? I think it could have a big impact on business growth now or even down the road.

4 tips to perfect your elevator pitch

In addition to creating the perfect elevator pitch, you should also work on sprucing up your delivery. There’s nothing worse than sitting through a boring speech, so make sure yours is anything but. From posture to tone, there’s a lot you can practice to make sure you look professional and knowledgeable. Consider these four tips when trying to nail a successful elevator pitch.

1. Stick to your outline

To prevent getting off-topic, it’s important to stick to your outline at least to some extent. While you don’t need to recite it word for word, it’s best to memorize the majority of your pitch. That way you won’t need to worry about checking your notes.

2. Speak slowly and clearly

Many professionals tend to talk quickly when they’re nervous—hey, we’re only human. But it’s important to enunciate and speak slowly so the audience can understand you. This is especially important when presenting over video chat. But try not to slow yourself down too much or you’ll go over your allotted time.

3. Record your pitch

Record yourself reciting the pitch to work on any areas that need improvement. Practice your pitch a handful of times by playing the recording back and working out any pain points. A couple of key areas to focus on are speed and tone. It’s better to sound overly energized rather than monotone.

4. Practice, practice, practice!

There’s nothing more effective than practicing your pitch until you’re able to recite it in your sleep. If possible, practice in front of friends and family to get constructive feedback on how you can make your pitch even better. Even if you have years of experience, you can never go wrong with being overly prepared.

Elevate your first impression with an elevator pitch

An elevator pitch is a chance to show off your strengths and pitch your solutions. While it may sound nerve-wracking, using the 15 elevator pitch examples above will help you develop your own method using personal tidbits that tie into your innovative solutions.

While your pitch is an important part of leveling up your business, there are many avenues you can take to achieve growth. One of those ways is by determining whether project management vs. work management tools are right for your team. Not only will they help connect your team members, but the right tools and software can also help your organization set strategic goals.
