Private English Tuition, Gosforth, Newcastle-Upon-Tyne
My name is Joanne Edwards and I am a full-time independent English tutor based in Newcastle-upon-Tyne, UK.
I make it my mission to help each of my students achieve their goals - whether they are aiming for exam success, wanting to improve their foundation skills, or simply looking for enrichment in the subject.
English is all about communication, so I encourage my students to become proficient in formulating and expressing their ideas. I help my students discover that, when it comes to English as a subject, everyone can find their own unique voice and style.
I'm here to help my students become confident and resilient and to gain the skills needed to become independent learners.
If you would like to find out how I can help, please call or send me a message and I will provide a free 30 minute assessment in order to discuss your specific goals and requirements.

Why tutoring works.
In a classroom setting, there may be up to thirty other students in the room. For this reason:
- A student may have to compete with those other students for their English teacher's time and attention.
- A student may feel too nervous or embarrassed to speak up, or it may be that the teacher doesn't have the necessary time to ensure each child's questions are answered.
- If a student has a misconception or misunderstanding, it may be weeks before their work is marked and, even then, the teacher may not have adequate time to explain in writing exactly where a student went wrong.
- The student is often left to decipher and interpret the teacher's notes independently, and this does not always help them to progress.
- In school there is pressure to cover the full scope of the curriculum in a set period, so there is often no time to revisit concepts or topics that students may struggle with.
- Finally, at home, parents may not always have the free time or necessary expertise to help students with their school work.
This can all have a cumulative effect, resulting in a student feeling confused and frustrated. They can begin to panic that they are falling behind their peers and begin to experience self-doubt or anxiety.
When a student receives one-to-one tuition, they benefit from having their teacher's undivided attention. The topic can be presented in a way that is customised to their interests and learning style. Any misconceptions or mistakes can be addressed straight away, as they receive immediate feedback on their work. Because there is more flexibility, tutors can spend time concentrating on any problem areas before moving on. The learning happens at the student's pace. Most importantly, the relationship of trust that develops between student and tutor will allow them to communicate their questions, ideas and thought processes, and the ensuing dialogue can ensure that students gain confidence quickly and make significant progress in the subject.

My Approach
I absolutely love English and teaching students on a one-to-one basis allows me to help them discover (or rediscover) everything that is fantastic about this exciting subject: its richness and variety; its nuances and subtleties; its capacity for communicating both surface and hidden meanings; and the way that it can empower individuals by allowing them to express themselves clearly and eloquently.
I know that each student is unique, so I work hard to create tailor-made lessons and resources. By getting to know a student's interests, I facilitate learning experiences which are enjoyable yet also challenging. This means that a student's encounters with the subject are about so much more than mere test preparation - they are opportunities to have fun with the language and discover how much freedom the subject affords for interesting reading, creativity and self-expression.
In my teaching I come across far too many young people who suffer with anxiety when it comes to their education. Therefore, helping students to develop their self-esteem and independence is at the core of what I do as a tutor. My approach is encouraging and nurturing. I identify a student's existing strengths, be it a good memory, a varied vocabulary or perceptive reading skills, and I use this as a starting point to help develop their confidence. Anxiety and self-doubt are tremendous barriers to learning and, once these are removed through one-to-one tuition, students progress quickly in the subject.
How I Can Help
Types of tuition and support available:.
I have taught and examined for various exam boards for both English Language and Literature and this has helped me to create a comprehensive GCSE study programme, which covers the following important techniques:
English Language -
- in depth text analysis;
- structuring paragraphs in order to communicate this analysis effectively;
- techniques for planning and answering examination questions accurately and comprehensively, ensuring all assessment objectives are met;
- writing in a way that is clear, formal and accurate;
- communicating in a succinct way in order to succeed under timed conditions;
I will help students to work through their GCSE Literature texts, so that they are not only familiar with the characters, plots and themes, but they have a fully developed appreciation of the ideas and themes that an author was trying to communicate, influenced by their own unique time period and social context. I provide my students with key quotes and concise revision tools and, in addition to this, I ensure that students feel confident planning and structuring a successful literature essay.
I have created a full course of study for Key Stage 3. This course is specifically designed to help students build a foundation in all the skills that will be required in order for them to excel in their GCSE English Language and Literature exams.
A-Level Literature
With literature being my specialism (having achieved a first-class honours degree and an MA in the subject), whether you need support with text analysis or presenting your ideas in essay form, I can help you progress swiftly in the subject through targeted tuition.
Home-educated students
I was home educated for a number of years, so I am familiar with many of the values and concerns which lead parents to choose a different educational path for their children. I am also conscious that different families will approach home education differently, so I make sure to discuss each family's requirements before lessons begin. Generally, my aim is to deliver course content in a way that is expansive and not reductive, so that students can explore their individual interests and creativity.
In addition to working as a GCSE examiner for AQA and OCR, I also work as an IGCSE examiner, as many home-educated students choose this option for their English Language and Literature GCSE exams. This ensures that I teach the specific skills and techniques relevant for this course of study.
I provide a tailor-made service to my home educated students. Not only do I offer group lessons (of up to four students) and the flexibility to extend lessons where necessary, I also offer a discounted hourly rate - depending on student numbers, the time of day and the frequency of lessons.
When face-to-face tuition is not possible or practical, online tuition is an extremely effective alternative and can be just as beneficial for students as if I was there in person.
My online resources are easy to access, and I ensure that lessons are engaging and clear through the use of up-to-date screen sharing and visual technologies.
Please contact me to discuss your child’s specific educational requirements and I can provide you with more information about how online tuition works.
Mature Students
I believe that learning should be a life-long process. Do you want to:
- broaden your career or study options by improving your core English skills;
- receive some assistance with a course of studies you are already undertaking; or
- study various literary texts for your own enrichment and enjoyment?
Whatever you are aiming to achieve, give me a call and we can discuss how to make your goals a reality.
A discounted hourly rate is available when tuition sessions are scheduled during normal school hours.

Newcastle Tutors provides best services in the region. I have 2 kids and had tried few tutors in the past, but the changes I have observed in just last 6 months, since they are with Newcastle Tutors, are phenomenal. Now kids do their own home work and they seem to have developed some interest in subject. School results have also improved a lot. Kudos to Newcastle Tutors. I would highly recommend Newcastle Tutors for other struggling students or simply who want to improve.
Navman Anderson
This tutorial provides the best education to the children. They focus on all round development like communication, aptitude, research. Students get extra knowledge by their home work and enlightens for better future studies. Keep going. Cheers.

I was so happy when we found Newcastle Tutoring for our son Beau Barris. We were after someone that could take Beau further than the classroom lesson plans at his school and stimulate his inquisitive mind to tackle more challenging aspects of the curriculum, to explore numbers and get a better understanding and a deeper, richer understanding of how numbers work and some of the things you can do with numbers. All we want for our children is for them to be Happy, Grow and Learn!! I know that going to Newcastle Tutoring with Sharvil makes Beau very happy, he is growing and learning from the guidance of someone that is a wonderful influence on him and the Influence of a good teacher can never be erased.
Tiffany Jones
This is one of the best tutorial for schooling kids. They focus on improvement of every kid individually. It is a nice atmosphere for studying. Rollica’s interaction with students and parents is appreciable. I wish her all the best. Thank you.

MATHEMATICS TUITION :-
Our mathematics lessons ensure that the students develop strong foundation and have deep fundamental knowledge of all mathematical concepts. The Newcastle Tutors Learning System consists of lessons, practice sessions, classwork, homework and tests. All programs at Newcastle Tutors are written in accordance with the NSW Education Standards Authority (NESA) syllabus, ensuring that every syllabus requirement is covered.
Emphasis is given on developing basic skills for solving complex problems methodically. Students are taught numerous mathematical concepts including theory, mental maths, and word problems from various mathematical topics. They are also taught to apply different strategies to different real-world problems.
At Newcastle Tutors, we recognise the importance of constant revision. As such, we also offer intensive revision programs designed to consolidate all coursework and fine-tune each student’s exam techniques. In addition, the student’s understanding is regularly assessed throughout the term via our regular tests.
Our tutors also utilise concrete learning aids and positive reinforcement, to ensure all students achieve success and have fun at the same time.
ENGLISH TUITION :-
During our English lessons at Newcastle Tutors, we ensure students have the opportunity to respond and compose to a wide range of texts relevant to their stage of development. We constantly work on developing a student’s reading comprehension, vocabulary, and grammar, which play a vital role in many other subjects. We enhance the student’s writing skills,an essential part of studying the English language, benefiting a student with confidence in their writing and general communication skills.
We achieve this through a close study of all text types, so that students develop knowledge, understanding, and skills required to be a successful and independent learner, both now and in the future. We also help ESL students develop their English-speaking capabilities. Learning English is essential for success at school and for further education.Approximately 20% of all students (over 145,000 students) in NSW government schools are learning English as an additional language. More than 30% (over 240,000 students) are from a language background other than English.
Thinking skills and Mathematical reasoning :-
Thinking skills and Mathematical reasoning improves the student’s capacity to reason logically. The New South Wales Government aims to identify gifted and talented students and to maximize their learning outcomes in all public schools. Giftedness refers to potential distinctly beyond the average for the student’s age and encompasses a broad range of abilities in the intellectual, creative, socio-emotional, and physical domains. Thinking skills and Mathematical reasoning is tested in the Opportunity Class test and the Selective Schools entry test.

NAPLAN TESTS PREPARATION
National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) is a national test held for all students in Australia in year 3, 5, 7 and 9. Exams are held every year in May.

- Language Conventions( spelling, grammar and punctuation)

Personal Description:
I absolutely love teaching and helping students understand paintings from a more hands on approach and really looking at artworks. I have studied art history for Leaving Cert, for my BA, MA and now my PhD. I prefer one-on-one teaching in order to give students my full attention.
Tutoring Experience:
My teaching involves understanding the timeline of art history, identifying characteristics of different art movements, as well as comprehending the cultural context of the period. I have a special interest in essay writing, with three year's experience correcting undergraduate essays, as well as providing workshops on writing skills, and being on the Editorial Board for Ireland's leading art history journal, Artefact, the Journal for the Irish Association of Art Historians. My lessons are 60 mins. I have three years experience tutoring art history at university level. My lessons are for any age group.
Approach to Grinds:
I have three year's experience correcting essays and exams at university level, so I like to tackle the papers from an examiner's point of view. With essay writing, I will help you improve your grades by looking at formatting, structure, footnotes and essential readings.
