A nail consists of a metal rod or shank, pointed at one end and usually having a formed head at the other, that can be hammered into pieces of wood or other materials to fasten them together. A nail is usually made of steel, although it can be made of aluminum, brass, or many other metals. The head, shank, and point may have several shapes based on the intended function of the nail.

Of the nearly 300 types of nails, most are used in residential housing construction. The average wood frame house uses between 20,000 and 30,000 nails of various types and sizes.

Nails are important items in building construction, carpentry and wood joinery. It is therefore reasonable to assume that the growth in the construction industry. carpentry and wood joinery generate high demand for nails. The shortage of supply from existing industries and the importation of the products call for a urgent need to set up of more nail factory.

Due to lack of local raw materials, Nigeria imports foreign made nails from developed countries like china, Canada and the United State of America which has resulted in a huge amount of foreign exchange loss to the Nigerian economy and less trust in made in Nigeria nails.

There is no data on the supply and demand of nail in Nigeria but like we have already stated, the demand is dependent on the growth of the construction industry and based a deficit of 16,000,000 in housing supply, it is fair to say that Nigeria has a large, growing and sustainable market for nail.

This feasibility report seeks to examine the financial viability or otherwise of establishing a wire nail production plant in Nigeria using low carbon steel wire as the raw material.

The line to make wire nails comprises of the wire drawing machine, wire nail making machines and nail polishing machines.

The output of the machine is a function of the capacity as well as the diameter and length of the product to be produced. Because of the different thickness of the product that can be produced, we have used 2 ½ inch as the reference size in the report.

The plant would produce three hundred and thirty pieces of 2 ½ inches of wire nail per minute (320 pcs/min) requiring 1,000 kg of low carbon steel wire to produce 970 kg of wire nails inclusive of 2% wastage and 280 pcs of 2 ½ inches of wire nail weighing 1 kg.

The plant would operate at eighty percent (80%) of the installed capacity for double (2) shifts of eight (8) hours each in the first, second, third, fourth and fifth year of operations respectively and producing twelve million, two hundred and eighty-eight thousand (12,288,000) pcs of 2 ½ inches of wire nails bi-monthly.

Manufacturing Process of Wire Nail:

Two types of machines are required to manufacture nails (i) Crank type (ii) Spring type.

Out of these maintenance cost and are automatic. Cold drawn, bright wire is used to make nails, and this wire is available in various gauges (20 S.W.G. to 65 W.G.) . These wires are found in round bundles, one end of the wire is fixed in tool stand and then the other is put in wire straightening rollers and the wire automatically reaches the machine.

To pull the wire further ahead, there is a grip after the rollers and this grip pulls only as much wire as is needed for the specific of the nail. The head of the nail is put into the mould’s “rem”, that can be pushed back & front through the crank shot.

The front end of the wire is hit hard by the punch attached to the head-making mould. To make the other end and then cutting of the nail is done automatically. Here the moulds press the wire and nail gets bifurcated & cut from the wire. In this way, some part of the nail is still attached to the wire and an automatic trigger separates the nail from the wire.

When the nails come out of the machine, then the tiny bits of iron & grease/lubricant deposited on the nails are remoulded by putting them into a polishing drum in which iron balls and dust are also put and after the polish, they are sent to the markets in jute bags.

The details of the gauges of the wire, etc. required to manufacture various sizes of the nails are mentioned below:

  • Nails of the length ranging from ½ inch to 2 inches wire gauge:- 20 to 12 S.W.G; capacity of machines, etc. 400 nails per minute; electric motor of 2 H.P.
  • Nails of length ranging from ¾ to 3 inches wire gauge:- 14 to 9 S.W.G.; capacity of the machines:- 300 nails/minute and 350 kg. nails per day. Electric motor of 3 H.P.
  • Nails of length ranging from 1/2 to 4 inches wire gauge:- 11 to 8 S.W.G.; capacity of the machine; 250 nails/minute and 850 kg nail/day. Electric motor of 5 H.P.

Many times, the subject of a business plan comes up when one wants to start a business, and for the majority of people, it almost always seems like some special type of document that only gurus write.

A large number of Nigerian startups fail to understand the true significance of this one document. This fact has made many Nigerian business startups botch the preparation of their business plans by focusing totally on the wrong things.

Good plans prune your projections into realistic thresholds and consider as many parameters as are available to you.

Before we move on to how to write a business plan, we need to define and establish what a business plan is or what it should be.

 A business plan is a document describing a business, its products or services, how it earns (or will earn) money, its leadership and staffing, its financing, its operations model, and many other details essential to its success.

Before unknowingly wasting precious time writing a plan that wouldn’t fit its purpose, you must know who exactly is going to be reading your plan before taking any steps.

For example, a simple plan written to attract investors would always differ from one written for internal use only.

Furthermore, before writing any part of your plan, even in the search for investors, you should consider especially who your readers are and try as much to cater to their particular expectations without losing track of your initial road map.

You should also aim to make your plan adaptable, editing it as the situation demands.

Draft an executive summary

Starting from a proper description of your company, you must share all the relevant information that connects to form your typical brand business plan.

These include market or industry analysis, organisation and management, service or product line, marketing and sales, your operations plan and your financial projections.

Make sure to present as detailed a description as possible using whatever medium can portray your ideas the best – tables, charts, verified industry statistics etc.

Do a thorough research

It doesn’t matter if you ever intend for anyone else to read it.

To write the most functional and perfect business plan, you need to know many things, which means research. It’s also called “doing a market analysis.”

It should include an overview of how big your estimate of the market is for your products, an analysis of your business’ position in the market, and a general overview of the competitive landscape.

It’s considered a safe bet to spend twice as much time researching as you would drafting the actual business plan.

You cannot do this effectively if you do not take the time to study them. A good reason an investor would choose your business is if you have been able to study your competition and find a means to produce your services and products that are unique, better, and distinguishable. 

Take note of actual and estimated figures

When you are starting a business and using expected figures, you need to communicate that properly so as not to mislead investors. Of course, you should have actual figures if you are already running your business.

Service or product plan

This section should explain your service’s life cycle and what you sell. Explain how this benefits your customers. Share plans of intellectual property filings and research on your product or service. Also, describe the problem you are solving and how you plan to solve it. Of course, you have to talk about the competition as well.

Outline management and organisation

Your business plan’s management and organisation section should tell readers about who’s running your company. Detail the legal structure of your business. Communicate whether you’ll incorporate your business as a corporation or create a limited partnership or sole proprietorship. 

If you have a management team, use an organisational chart to show your company’s internal structure, including the roles, responsibilities, and relationships between people in your chart.

Communicate how each person will contribute to the success of your startup. If you do not have enough hands to produce the desired result, have a plan to hire capable people to fill in the gap.

You can add documents (resumes, permits, leases, product pictures, letters of reference, etc.) to support your business plan; however, this is optional. 

As you write a business plan that serves its purpose, remember that your words should persuade the reader and convince them as it convinced you.

Of the nearly 300 types of nails, most are used in residential housing construction. The average wood frame house uses between 20,000 and 30,000 nails of various types and sizes.

Nails are important items in building construction, carpentry and wood joinery. It is therefore reasonable to assume that the growth in the construction industry. carpentry and wood joinery generate high demand for nails. The shortage of supply from existing industries and the importation of the products call for a urgent need to set up of more nail factory.

Due to lack of local raw materials, Nigeria imports foreign made nails from developed countries like china, Canada and the United State of America which has resulted in a huge amount of foreign exchange loss to the Nigerian economy and less trust in made in Nigeria nails.

There is no data on the supply and demand of nail in Nigeria but like we have already stated, the demand is dependent on the growth of the construction industry and based a deficit of 16,000,000 in housing supply, it is fair to say that Nigeria has a large, growing and sustainable market for nail.

This feasibility report seeks to examine the financial viability or otherwise of establishing a wire nail production plant in Nigeria using low carbon steel wire as the raw material.

The line to make wire nails comprises of the wire drawing machine, wire nail making machines and nail polishing machines.

The output of the machine is a function of the capacity as well as the diameter and length of the product to be produced. Because of the different thickness of the product that can be produced, we have used 2 ½ inch as the reference size in the report. The plant would produce three hundred and thirty pieces of 2 ½ inches of wire nail per minute (320 pcs/min) requiring 1,000 kg of low carbon steel wire to produce 970 kg of wire nails inclusive of 2% wastage and 280 pcs of 2 ½ inches of wire nail weighing 1 kg.

The plant would operate at 80% of the installed capacity for double (2) shifts of eight (8) hours each in the first, second, third, fourth and fifth year of operations respectively and producing twelve million, two hundred and eighty-eight thousand (12,288,000) pcs of 2 ½ inches of wire nails bi-monthly.

Achatinas are forest snails, they hide under plants from sunlight, wind, heat, and feed on dead and live plants, fruits, dead animals and extract calcium from the soil, but LIMICOLARIA and ACHATINA FULICA are Garden snails.

Just like helix aspersa or Pumatia, achatinidae garden Snails lives on plants and can lay fertile eggs without mating. They produce more slime and are smaller in size than Forest Snails.

They lay more than 100 – 400 eggs per clutch in a cycle and have more Laying circles than Forest Snails. They can be found in Northern Nigeria because they have the capacity to withstand high temperatures.

Limicolaria .

It lays 50 eggs and above per batch and can regulate it four to seven times a year. It has the same shell formation and color as ACHATINA FULICA.

It’s not advisable to rear this for meat production. Its most times are seen as a pest in the farm or garden

Achatina Achatina (AA).

It is indigenous to countries like Ghana, Benin Republic, and Togo, etc, the AA is popularly referred to as Ghana tiger snail because it is majorly found in Ghana.

The extra jumbo size and the designs on the shell it has the yellowish and darkish spine on the shell which has close similarity with a tiger color. AA has a very pointed tail just like AF, it usually has six or more ring rounds curved on the shell.

The eggs are the same size as AF eggs and they grow slower compared to AM. it can grow big in the long run, it is not good for business in Nigeria. It lays between 100 eggs to 200 eggs per batch and can regulate this batch 3 to 6 times a year.

If you must farm AA please start with 20 pieces, experience they say is the best teacher. Nigeria’s climate is not favorable for this particular species of snail.

Archachatina Marginata (AM).

It is called the big black snail or giant snail, it is commonly found in the forest along the coastline of West Africa, this is one of the most common found snails in Nigeria amidst ACHATINA FULICA, the shell has a mottled color of black, brown, white, pink, and very thick.

The skin color is dark grey, some breeds of white skin are found in some areas usually called albino snails. They are 11 to 19cm at maturity and can weigh between 300 to 9 to 500g or more. They grow to full size in their natural habitats from 12 to 14 months or more. The shell is less pointed than the ACHATINA ACHATINA species.

Archachatina Marginata is not a snail but a subfamily of achatinidae with over seven subspecies.

Yes, I know you are surprised about all these subspecies I listed above right? Because the majority of snail Farmers only know and talk about two among the seven, the Sauralis and the Ovum’s, it doesn’t mean the other five have gone extinct.

Let’s focus on the two popular Marginata’s, the Ovum and Saturalis because they are very fast growing and great for meat production,

Archachatina marginata Suturalis (AMS).

AMS is very common in swampy regions but that doesn’t make it a water snail, it is easily found in Delta State and the Eastern part of Nigeria. It lays five (5) to ten(10) eggs per clutch and can regulate this batch three (3) to eight (8) times in good environmental conditions throughout the year.

It is very slow in growth compared to Achatina Marginata Ovum, it doesn’t have strong international market value, and it can take up to five (5) years to grow to jumbo size, wow that’s a whole lot of time if you ask me!

We have two types of suturalis : Swap suturalis and land suturalis. Land suturalis grow faster than swamp suturalis but are not comparable to Ovum both have the same egg-laying capacity.

Archachatina marginata Ovum (AMO).

The soilless system can only be applicable in the intensive system which requires lots of care and attention but it’s also productive, as a professional and researcher in snail farming, I will recommend the system for slime production and snail hatchlings ( snail babies because they are delicate and can die easily in any slight changes of the environmental condition

The soilless system is great but one disadvantage of it, whenever the snails are left for a long time without adequate moisture they die out, you must ensure you moisten their pen daily and will provide lots of plantain leaves to retain the moist humid micro atmosphere in their pen, this is why their house must be under a shade or in a room, under trees to regulate the temperature of the house,

High temperature is bad for snail business because it increases mortality (death rate) its cool to consider the saturalis love a swampy humid environment, but the Ovum is better with soil moisture less than 50, they can also tolerate a slight increase in high temperature, unlike Saturalis, Fulica’s and the AA’s The best kind of soil for snail farming is Loamy soil.

Loamy soil is any soil that can conveniently support the growth of vegetables. After getting the loamy soil you need to treat the soil to prevent diseases or larvas of ants, flies which are normally laid in riched loamy soil to hatch and eat up your snail

Feeding plays a significant role in the life of every animal. Land snails are a large group of pulmonates belonging to the class Gastropoda of the phylum Mollusca. Like other nocturnal animals, snails are mostly active during the night, i.e. to say their reproduction, feeding, and other behavioral activities are at their peak at night. Time of feeding has a significant effect on the growth of land snails and some other fauna resources. Land snails are nocturnal animals, so photoperiods have a significant regulatory role on invertebrates. Which have been exploited to adapt to life on land like the vertebrae species. Snails feed at night and dusk when there is rain or if the sky is overcast, subsisting on both fresh and decomposing plant materials.

Snails feed usually at night and their most preferred diets include; unripe pawpaw fruits, chaff from fermented milled maize, they show a distinct preference for moist feed such as snail feed, powdered shells which are moistened with water before being offered to them. Feeding activity in snails depends on the weather because they prefer juicy fruits, leaves, and vegetables to dry ones. In most Snail farms, they are usually fed at different times depending on the preferred time of the Farmer.

The habit or behavior of snails feeding at night is adaptive in nature as it protects snails from dehydration and possible predators that are usually available during the day.

Stitched Construction

Uppers are stitched directly to the midsoles and outsoles using durable welt stitching rather than adhesives. Allows re-soling. Very durable.

Assemble the upper on the last temporarily using tacks. Then apply the chosen method to attach and close the upper more permanently before adding soles.

Step 5 – Attach Soles

Leather, rubber, or man-made polymer soles can be used.

Leather soles provide flexibility and feel but wear quicker. Rubber soles are more durable and provide traction but can feel rigid. Polyurethane soles balance durability and flexibility.
