What Teachers Really Want for Teacher Appreciation Week

It’s that time of year again for social media posts, emails, and gifts thanking teachers for their hard work —and legions of teachers who still report feeling unappreciated. For years, writers have taken to Education Week’s opinion pages to mark the week with both heartfelt thanks and searching reflections on how to make that appreciation last far longer than five days.

In 2021, teachers of the year from seven states came together to write “ It’s Teacher Appreciation Week. Flowers? Mugs? We’re Looking for Something More ,” expressing their hopes for appreciative gestures that won’t wilt by the end of the week.

Their No. 1 ask? “Include teachers in education decisions.”

Another former state teacher of the year came to a similar conclusion several years earlier, when 2014 Texas Teacher of the Year Monica Washington argued that messages of appreciation ring hollow when they aren’t accompanied by a seat at the decisionmaking table: “We are often told that we are ‘valued professionals’ who ‘change the lives of our students every day.’ But we are also micromanaged to immobility, not trusted to make the simplest decisions that affect students’ learning and well-being.”

Sharif El-Mekki has taken on a principal eye view of this conundrum in several recent essays. “What if we made Teacher Appreciation Week last all year?” he asked school leaders last spring , before laying out five actionable recommendations.

Several months later, the former principal kept the theme of teacher appreciation alive into the fall by offering “ The 4 Gifts Principals Should Give Teachers This Year (Hint: Not Another School Mug) .”

That’s not the only call to action opinion writers had for principals. Explaining her own approach in “ Why One Principal Is Asking Her Staff to Do Less ,” Indiana Principal Crystal Thorpe dialed in on the ABCs of school—academics, behavior, and culture—to slow down the runaway snowball of demands on teachers.

Part of appreciating teachers starts with respecting their profession as more than just a steppingstone to administration or some other career changes. That’s the message of “ Why I’m Happy Being ‘Just a Teacher,’ ” in which Amanda Myers works through her response to a recent dinner party guest who pushed for answers on her “next step” after teaching. The widespread assumption that every teacher is an administrator-in-waiting undermines the valuable types of leadership that teachers bring to the job they already have, she writes.

Gratitude doesn’t just come from outside the profession: Teachers are ready to appreciate each other as well. Just look at what these teachers and student-teachers had to say about the educators who inspired them:

Those words of affirmation are just in line with instructional coach Lisa Westman’s prescriptions in the 2017 opinion essay “ Teachers, Do We Appreciate One Another? ” To help her fellow educators join the mutual-appreciation party, Westman translates the popular love languages—gift giving, words of affirmation, quality time, acts of service, and physical connection—into work-appropriate gestures to make colleagues feel valued.

“Teachers most frequently say they feel unappreciated by society and administration,” she wrote. “And it is easy to look outward at factors we cannot control, we can’t make society appreciate us. But, when we look inward, we must ask, what part do we, teachers, play in creating a culture of appreciation?”

A decade into retirement, former English teacher Laurie Barnoski was still feeling the appreciation when she sat down to write a love letter to teaching back in 2018. After reconnecting with four former students—two of whom had gone on to become English teachers themselves—she was reminded of the long-tail influence of her job.

“By taking time to say thank you,” she wrote, “my students were telling me that my 32 years in the classroom meant something; my goal to have a positive impact on my students was complete. They gave me the greatest gift human beings can give one another: They told me that I mattered.”

Teacher Appreciation Week honors our teachers.

Event Description

Since 1984, the National PTA has designated time each May for communities nationwide to honor teachers for their work with children. Parents, students, and schools across America celebrate Teacher Appreciation Week to show appreciation for the work and dedication of teachers and reaffirm the commitment to parent-teacher partnerships.

Classroom Activity

In celebration of Teacher Appreciation Week, read a book about a teacher such as Thank You, Mr. Falker, Miss Nelson is Missing , or a Magic School Bus story with Ms. Frizzle. Why are the teachers in these stories special? Have a class discussion about some of your students' favorite teachers. Then have students try these follow-up activities:

Compare a favorite teacher to a teacher from a book with the Interactive Venn Diagram .
Write a letter to a favorite teacher using the Letter Generator .
Create a character map of either Miss Nelson or another storybook teacher with the Story Mapping tool.
Use the Essay Map to plan and write an essay on why they would or would not like to be a student in one of the storybook teachers' classrooms.
Read and present another book about a special teacher. Older students may choose books like The Miracle Worker by William Gibson, Tuesdays with Morrie by Mitch Albom, or A Lesson Before Dying by Ernest Gaines.

This week in the United States is Teacher Appreciation Week , a time set aside each year to honor the hard work that educators do every day in the classroom and beyond. This week is a good time to reflect on the teachers we have had, to appreciate our colleagues, and to take time for ourselves!

All of us have had a teacher who has made a profound difference in our lives—someone who changed our lives, made us think more deeply, set our feet on the right path. Perhaps it was a teacher we met in a classroom, but it could just have easily been a coach, a youth group leader, a family or community elder, or religious leader. In this project from ReadWriteThink.org , students write a tribute to such a teacher, someone who has taught them an important lesson that they still remember. The personal essays that students write for this lesson are then published in a class collection. This is an activity that teachers can take part in too!

Yes, your teachers have a lot of sticky notes, and they probably have stacks of notepads, but none of those are as cool as ones that have your teachers’ names printed across the top. Set up a sweets buffet

It’s always good to keep your teachers fueled up throughout the day. Setting up a buffet of tasty treats in the teacher’s lounge will definitely give your teachers the boost to keep them on top of their game through the end of the day. Whether store-bought or homemade, organize with your classmates and the PTO, so your buffet of treats has a wide variety of options. You can bet your teachers will make a few extra stops at the teacher’s lounge throughout the day.

Bring your teacher a new tumbler filled with sweets

In case you hadn’t noticed, a lot of these ideas involve treats and sweets. We aren’t saying all teachers have a sweet tooth, but if you ever happened upon a staff meeting, there’s a good chance there’s a bowl of treats somewhere close by. This gift idea combines two things in one: a stash of your teachers’ favorite candies and a new tumbler they can use to keep hydrated. When teaching all day, it’s nice to have some water close at hand, and new tumblers are always appreciated. You can even fancy it up by ordering a personalized tumbler or finding one with a message of appreciation printed on the side.

Resupply those teacher supplies

Restocking supplies is always something your teachers need to do. There are a lot of neat ways you can make a gift of supplies. Whether it’s contributing to catering service or hand-delivering meals, teachers would love to see their students helping to serve a nice breakfast or lunch.

Organize with the PTO to make grade level or content area t-shirts for all teachers

Teachers love to show that they are a part of a team. It’s great to have matching t-shirts that all staff members can wear, but it’s nice for teachers to be able to highlight their specific teams. There are a lot of fun teacher t-shirt designs available at custom print clothing companies. This is a great idea to work on with the PTO. All of your teachers can celebrate Teacher Appreciation by donning their specially designed t-shirts on the same day. That’s a yearbook photo waiting to happen!

Rest up with a “do nothing” day

Teaching is a profession where your work inevitably follows you home. Head into the weekend without bringing school home with you. Sleep in, and binge watch that show you’ve been meaning to check out.

Have a team lunch from your favorite local restaurant

Sometimes, things get so busy that you barely have time to grab a hot lunch from the school cafeteria. Make a plan with your team to order from a favorite local eatery. We’re firm believers that teachers deserve appreciation all year long. And we’ll take it in the form of higher salaries and stronger laws to make schools safer for everyone . But we’re fans of the official Teacher Appreciation Day and U.S. Teacher Appreciation Week too. Here’s more about Teacher Appreciation Week and ideas for celebrating it.

When Is Teacher Appreciation Week?

U.s. teacher appreciation week runs from may 6 to may 10, 2024, and teacher appreciation day is may 7, 2024..

Since 1984, Teacher Appreciation Week always takes place the first full week of May. Teacher Appreciation Day, on the other hand, takes place on the first Tuesday in May in the United States. (World Teachers Day takes place each year in October— here’s more about that holiday .)

History of Teacher Appreciation Week

What Do Teachers Really Want for Teacher Appreciation Week?

Eleanor Roosevelt was actually the first to convince Congress that we needed a dedicated time to thank teachers for their hard work in the 1950s. The first lady had an excellent understanding of what it really means to be a teacher.

“The teachers are, of course, among the most important people in our nation,” she wrote in 1953 . “Day in and day out they are at work preparing the future citizens of the U.S. … I have always felt that we did not give an honorable enough place in our communities to the teachers. Next to parents they are the most important people in our communities.”

Roosevelt continued: “It is quite impossible to give teachers monetary compensation alone that will repay for their devotion to the job and the love that must go to each and every child. But I think we could compensate a little more adequately the teachers in our communities if we were conscious of their importance.”

The 81st Congress declared a National Teacher Day for 1953 at Roosevelt’s urging. The holiday didn’t catch on right away, though. In 1980, Congress declared March 7 National Teacher Day, but it was only for that year. It wasn’t until 1985 that the National PTA established Teacher Appreciation Week in the first full week of May, with Teacher Appreciation Day held on Tuesday of that week.

What do teachers really want for Teacher Appreciation Week?

We’ve said it before and we’ll say it again: What teachers really want is to be valued, paid fairly, and supported in their jobs. They want a safe teaching environment and reasonable class sizes, with quality resources to serve every student’s needs. Teachers want equipment that works; texts that are up-to-date, relevant, and diverse; and plentiful classroom supplies that they don’t have to pay for out of their own pockets.

Most of all, teachers want respect. They want to be recognized for the professional, hardworking, dedicated, responsible, and educated workers they are. Teachers want the trust and freedom to make decisions about what they teach and how they teach it, because they are trained experts in their fields. They want administrators who support their decisions and provide the professional development they need to stay on top of their game.

Many of these are things that come automatically in other professions. But for some reason, teachers constantly have to beg for supplies, better pay, support, respect, and recognition. The best way you can really help teachers is to use Teacher Appreciation Week to advocate for what they really want and need, in and out of the classroom.

Use Teacher Appreciation Week to advocate for fair compensation, smaller class sizes, quality educational resources, and the respect and trust educators have earned.

20 U.S. Teacher Appreciation Week Ideas for 2024

That being said, teachers also want to be recognized for all their hard work, and this week is the perfect time to do it! By the end of a long school year, teachers have given their all every single day. So take this week to show them some love. These teacher appreciation ideas are a great way to start.

1. Collect thank-you notes

Meaningful teacher thank-you notes are always appreciated, as these examples can attest . Send a request home to students and families requesting they fill out a form or write a letter to help show appreciation for their teacher. Supply prompts or questions to make things a little easier, such as:

Why do you like your teacher?
What’s something cool your teacher taught you this year?
What makes your teacher special?
Share a special story about your teacher.

Don’t forget to give a deadline for returning the letters, and make it easy for families to respond any way that works best (collection box in the office, email, snail mail, etc.).

2. Record thank-you videos

Set up a Flip page for your school (or one for each teacher) and invite students and families to record a quick thank-you video. This way, others can see and celebrate your educators too.

3. Cover daily duties

Ask parents, administrators, and school board members to volunteer their time to cover recess or lunch duty, so teachers can get a much-needed break. Parent volunteers can also handle tasks like making copies, assembling supplies for a project, or organizing classroom bookshelves.

4. Pass out coupons for the future

Give teachers some flexibility by providing them with coupons they can trade for help in the future. (Be sure you’re not tasking other teachers with covering for them, though. Instead, arrange for administrators or parents to step in as needed.) Some possible ideas:

Cover a duty (lunch, drop-off/pickup, etc.)
Early leave/late arrival
Lend a hand (Be a second pair of hands and eyes in the classroom.)

5. Create collaborative art

One principal says she takes over art class for one week and works with students to create a big art piece specifically for their teacher. It’s a cooperative and visual way to say thanks for all that they do. See our favorite collaborative art projects here.

6. Decorate their doors

Loudly and proudly celebrate your teachers by decorating their doors. This costs very little. You just need some time and parent volunteers to pull it off. One principal turns his teachers into superheroes, complete with large face cutouts and capes!

7. Write messages in sidewalk chalk

This is a fun and easy way to welcome teachers to their day. Invite families to create the art the night before (check the weather for rain) or to come in early before school.

8. Let baristas make your teachers coffee

Set up your own hallway Starbucks, making delicious caffeine-filled treats for your teachers. This one will take some help from amazing volunteers, but if you pull it off, teachers will be talking about it for a long time.

9. Create collaborative bouquets

One principal asked each student to bring in a single flower, then created bouquets. This is a really sweet and inexpensive way to let families contribute, especially in areas where everyone has their own backyard garden.

10. Wash teachers’ cars

We heard from one principal who said they coordinate with their coaches and athletic department to set up a car-washing station during Teacher Appreciation Week. It’s free for all teachers, and it gets students involved too. So creative!

11. Buy them lunch

This is a standard Teacher Appreciation event, but one that’s always appreciated. Let teachers vote to choose a place, and place their orders in advance so every teacher gets what they want. (If possible, offer several places that teachers can pick from when they order.) Then, make sure their lunchtime is actually long enough (and stress-free enough!) to enjoy their meal.

12. Host a cookout

Invite parent or community volunteers to throw a cookout during lunch. Set up tables and chairs outside, with food available all through teacher lunch hours. They can swing by when their lunch break arrives, grab some BBQ, and relax with their coworkers in the sun!

13. Bring in a food truck or ice cream truck

This one will be oh-so popular, but it might take a little more cash. Cut costs by asking food trucks to donate or give you a discount. (You never know.) If that’s not possible, have an open call for donations from school families or select members of the community.

14. Offer room service

Put a note on teachers’ doors offering them room service. List treats like coffee, water, chocolate, fruit, etc. Ask them to select one or two items and then hang their request on their door by a certain time. Collect the notes, then stop by and leave the teachers’ requested items before the end of the day. This gives administrators a chance to get face time with each and every educator too!

15. Rent an ice cream machine for the week

You can give your teachers ice cream all Teacher Appreciation Week long through the magic of a rental. Set it up so your teachers can have ice cream anytime they want. (You can also rent a popcorn machine, snow cone machine, etc.) So sweet!

16. Offer massages with a mini spa

Want to help teachers relax? A massage might be the ticket! If you’re on a budget, ask the local massage schools if they have students who’d be willing to volunteer. You can also send an email to parents asking if anyone is a massage therapist. Have a sign-up sheet for teachers to get massages, then set everything up in an empty classroom that has soft music, aromatherapy, and other treats.

17. Ask local businesses to offer freebies or discounts

Visit local stores and restaurants to see if they’d be willing to give your teachers a discount or free item during Teacher Appreciation Week. They can provide items to give teachers at school, or invite teachers to stop by in person to get their discount or freebie.

18. Roll out the red carpet

Ask a local company if they’ll donate a red carpet rental, or just make one yourself out of paper. Then, give each teacher a star on the walk of fame, and line the carpet with students and administrators to cheer them on!

Let’s Hear it for the Coach: Appreciating Your Child’s Coach or Sports Mentor with a Note

Dear Coach Jackson,

We want to express our thanks for making our son, Tim Findley, feel a part of the volleyball team this year. If you recall, Tim transferred into the district in late October just after you had officially ended try-outs. You agreed to make an exception and let him try-out for the team the following week, and fortunately, you selected him for the starting line-up. That exception, in itself, could have created jealousies among other students.

We, as well as Tim, feared that might be the case. But as the season began, you planned some very important team-building, “bonding” experiences for the boys as you traveled to various tournaments to scout the opposition. Those trips especially gave the team members a chance to get to know Tim quickly one on one off the court. Those opportunities made the transition much easier for him in the new school.

And by the way, I might add that his grades have reflected a comfortable adjustment as well.

As you may have guessed, changing schools in the middle of the year is never a good situation for any student, but for an athlete, it can be disastrous. Such was not the case for Tim this year, thanks to you . We do appreciate your constant encouragement, your competent coaching, and your efforts to see that the college scouts take a look at your athletes. What more could parents ask?

According to previous reporting by USA Today , the holiday was originally established after former first lady Eleanor Roosevelt urged Congress to create an official day to recognize teachers. Originally, National Teacher Day was celebrated on March 7, but in 1984, it was moved to May. Around the same time, the National Parent-Teacher Association assigned the entire first week of May as Teacher Appreciation Week.

A Teen’s Plea to School Leaders: ‘Reach Students Who Suffer in Silence’

Anjali Verma’s minute-and-half-long campaign video runs like a highlights reel from the best moments of her teenage life—picnics with friends at her Pennsylvania charter school in West Chester, Pa., swim meets, speaking at student conventions, and hanging with her dog.

But Verma, who was elected to be president of the National Student Council last month, was quick to clarify that even the Instagram-friendly life teenagers seem to lead online is only half the story.

The other half is the reality of battling mental health challenges that spiked during the pandemic.

“Students are struggling more than we think. And they don’t feel comfortable asking for help. They don’t feel like their school, their community is able to support them,” Verma said. “There’s such a shame behind asking for help.”

By some measures, anxiety, depression and thoughts of suicide doubled during the pandemic. There has been a marginal improvement; mental health-related emergency room visits fell between 2021 and 2022. Still, addressing these needs in students has become a primary responsibility for school administrators.

Verma believes that students can play a strong role, too. Addressing mental health is high on her agenda as the new president of the NSC, a body that represents students councils from across the country, and advocates with school leaders and policymakers on issues that are important to students. The NSC is administered by the National Association of School Councils, which was founded in 1940.

Verma’s approach to the mental health challenge is to get student peers to support each other and make that part of every school’s culture. Students sharing their own stories of battling mental health challenges can ensure that students don’t feel like it’s just them, she said.

“To know that others are going through the same thing, and they understand you, is necessary to defeat the stigma,” Verma said.

She recently spoke to Education Week about her plans. The interview has been edited for length and clarity.

What don’t school leaders and policymakers understand about the current state of student mental health?

When it comes to access to mental health support, some students are hard to reach, and we really need to focus on them. They [school leaders] may also need to ensure that students are able to spot warning signs in their peers. We need to make it clear to all students that everyone has mental health challenges and there [should be] no stigma attached to it.

I think administrators need to know that the number of students who suffer silently are more than they estimate.

In addition to mental health, what are your other priorities as the president?

I think student councils can play a bigger role in establishing a positive school culture. They should be doing more than just planning homecoming [dances].

But it’s also about advocating for social change. One of the positions that this NASC cabinet has established is the Vice President of Service, which shows that as a national body, we prioritize community service. So, it gives us an opportunity to work with student leaders in schools to help them prioritize community service on their campuses, and outside it. Student councils can shape school cultures to be more service-oriented.

I want to highlight the role of every student council across the country, whether they belong to small, rural schools or big urban districts. There are a few awards and programs that recognize the efforts of student leaders … we plan to promote and spread awareness about them. Highlighting and celebrating these student leaders will help them play larger roles in improving their schools’ cultures.

We plan to match student council leaders from different schools, create group chats and establish a monthly call so that they can learn from each other. We must make sure that each individual school council sees beyond themselves and that they’re part of a supportive network.

Do school leaders see their students as leaders? Are there gaps in their perceptions?

There’s definitely a gap at the school board level. Not enough school boards have student representatives. But it’s deeper than that.

When students [in a school] have an idea, there’s typically a lengthy process to get it approved and executed, because there’s a lack of communication between students and their administrators. Students need to feel that their administrators are there to help them make changes, that they don’t have to do it themselves.

I want administrators to know that we're all on the same team.

The other aspect of promoting student leadership is to look beyond the council. Every student has ideas on how to improve their school and need administrators to be open to them. Every student should feel like their voice has worth.

What is your message to your fellow students about how they treat their teachers and principals?

As students, we must recognize that our educators and administrators are superheroes. At work every day, they try and shape the best educational experience for us. Valuing them is necessary beyond just the Teacher Appreciation Week.

To administrators, I would say, “we’re on the same team.” Student leaders share common goals with you when it comes to their own wellbeing. Working together is crucial to make the necessary changes in schools. Everyone, students and administrators, should support each other.
