Vermont police department apologizes after terrifying students with mock shooting featuring fake guns

Police in Burlington, Vermont, issued a public apology after students were shaken up by a role-play robbery demonstration that included “a mock shooting.”

About 20 Burlington High School students in a forensic program part of the year End Studies (YES) Program visited the Burlington Police Department on Wednesday, the school district said WPTZ of Plattsburgh , New York, reported.

During that presentation, the department put on a shooting simulation that included fake guns and came with no forewarning.

There were “screaming and fake gunshot sounds” and it took place “behind where the students were seated,” The Burlington School District said in a letter to families, WPTZ reported.

“As a result, some students believed the demonstration was real and were left feeling scared and confused,” the letter said.

However, police said their presentation was discussed prior with YES Program officials.

Burlington police said in a statement Thursday the role-playing scenario “only involved three department personnel simulating a robbery scenario and was not directed at any students or faculty.”

Police said that on April 29, Burlington School District staff associated with the YES program contacted BPD about conducting a presentation for students. On May 23, police department staff and YES program staff “communicated about the details of the scenarios, including saying that the training incident would involve ‘using fake firearms in a mock shooting,’” police said.

Police said the department asked if such an incident would “be okay for your group of students? It is about as real life as you can get, and is certainly exactly the sort of thing we deal with most frequently.”

YES Program staff then purportedly responded: “I think these students will be fine with this simulation. We will give a heads up to parents and students.”

“First and foremost, the Burlington Police Department apologizes to any students in attendance who were upset by the specific scenario and crime scene portion of the presentation,” the police department said.

BPD said that its supervisor involved in the presentation has reached out to the YES Program staff members to discuss the mater further.

“The BPD will be meeting with BSD students and staff tomorrow to discuss the presentation and its impact. We hope that this can be a reflective growth opportunity for all parties,” police said.

NBC News has reached out to the district for comment on the ordeal.

Burlington Police, high school officials apologize for upsetting students during role-play

File photo

BURLINGTON, Vt. (WCAX) - Burlington Police and high school officials are apologizing over a role-playing presentation that upset some local high school students taking part in a year-end school program.

Burlington High School officials say about 20 students were taking part in the Forensics section of the school’s Year End Studies, or YES program, and that Wednesday’s presentation included three members of the department simulating an armed robbery. They say while the gun that was used was fake, the enactment involved screaming and fake gunshot sounds that left some students feeling scared and confused.

School officials said in a statement that the demonstration was meant to show that witness statements can be unreliable, but that “it was clear that students and staff were negatively impacted,” they said. “We didn’t realize the demonstration would happen without warning or a chance to properly prepare students to understand what would be taking place.”

But police officials pushed back with their own statement, saying they notified the school in late May, asking “Do you think that sort of incident would be ok for your group of students?” They say school officials told them in response, “I think these students will be fine with this simulation. We will give a heads-up to parents and students.”

“I want to extend an apology, a sincere apology to the students impacted by this and the parents and the teachers,” Burlington Mayor Emma Mulvaney-Stanak said Thursday. She said the incident was the result of a communication breakdown and that she plans to meet with police officials to discuss the incident next week. “I will be specifically asking where are you reflective of what you could have done differently. Do you understand that harm has been made. How do we repair that harm and then how do we create better policies and procedures and policies and frankly have better instincts about flagging things before something has happened and then has caused harm for people.”

Both police and school officials did not respond Thursday to requests for an interview. Burlington Police say they will be meeting with students and staff Friday to discuss the impact of the presentation and say they hope it will be a reflective growth opportunity for all parties involved.

Do you need a copy of your high school transcript to apply to college, find a job, or for your own personal use? If so, we’ve got you covered! In this article, we’ll teach you how to request a transcript in just a few simple steps, whether you’re a student or a graduate. We’ll also provide some tips for how to obtain an online copy for free (plus, how to receive your transcript if your school is no longer in operation).

Getting Your High School Transcripts

Request your transcript online by going to the alumni or student services page on your school’s website. Most schools provide an unofficial copy for free. Alternatively, use a third-party service like Parchment to get your transcript. Or, contact your state department of education .

Step 1 Check your school’s website.

  • If your school offers online requests, you might be able to have your school send your transcript to a third party, such as a university or employer.

Step 2 Use an online transcript service.

  • You can also request to send your transcript to a university or employer, as long as you provide the relevant destination information. [4] X Research source
  • Some high schools let students access unofficial transcripts for free, but you will have to pay the processing fee to send an official copy to a third party.

Step 3 Contact your individual school.

  • If you need an unofficial transcript, your school can probably provide you a copy in a few minutes, but it may take several days to process a request for an official transcript.

Step 4 Contact your school district.

  • Depending on your school, you may be able to request your transcripts online, over the phone, or through the mail.
  • The district can also send official copies on your behalf to a university or employer if you pay a small processing fee between $3-10.

Step 5 Contact your state department of education.

  • For example, the Department of Labor & Workforce Development oversees all high school transcripts in the state of Tennessee, and they provide all of their diplomas and transcripts through DiplomaSender . [8] X Research source

Requesting Transcripts from a Private School (US)

Step 1 Contact your individual school.

  • Tip: If you’re having trouble finding your school through the National Center for Education Statistics, try only entering the city, state, and key word in their search engine.
  • Keep in mind that the school can withhold your transcript if you did not finish paying your tuition or other fees. [10] X Research source

Step 2 Check online transcript services.

  • Depending on your school, you will have to pay a small processing fee to request your transcript, but it typically costs between $3-10.
  • You can also request that your transcripts be delivered to a third party, such as a university or employer.

Step 3 Contact your state department of education.

  • Most states have a Private Schools Office that can handle your request.

Step 4 Contact your school’s custodian of records.

  • For example, in Texas, you would contact the Texas Private School Accreditation Commission. [14] X Research source
  • Alternatively, you can contact your state licensing agency to ask if they have your student records on file. [15] X Trustworthy Source US Department of Education Federal government agency in charge of U.S. education law and policy Go to source

Requesting Transcripts from a School in Canada

Step 1 Check if your province offers online requests.

  • You can pay for online transcripts via credit card, and they typically cost between $10-25 per copy. [17] X Research source

Step 2 Contact the individual school.

  • For example, you can find a specific school in Ontario on their school information finder .
  • If you graduated within the past 5 years, your individual school most likely has your records.

Step 3 Contact the school board.

  • If you graduated over 5 years ago or your school is no longer in operation, the school board most likely has your records.

Step 4 Contact the private school.

  • You can request a copy of your transcript via phone, email, or in person, as long as you provide the relevant identification information (your name, graduation year, and years attended).

Community Q&A

Community Answer

  • Before sending your transcript to a university via a third-party website, make sure you look over the destination information. Most universities request that you deliver them to their admissions department, but check the institution’s official website or your application forms in case they want you to send it elsewhere. • Have a driver’s license, state ID, or another form of identification on you when requesting a transcript, as it may be needed to prove your identity. Thanks Helpful 0 Not Helpful 0

Police in Burlington, Vermont, apologize to high school students after startling mock shooting demonstration

P olice in Burlington, Vermont, have apologized to high school students who were rattled by a role-play robbery demonstration that included a mock shooting and has drawn criticism from parents and local officials.

About 20 students from a Burlington High School Year End Studies (YES) forensics class went to the police station for a field trip Wednesday where school officials were aware a crime reenactment would occur, school district spokesperson Russ Elek said in a statement to the  VTDigger .

However, school officials “didn’t realize the presentation would happen without warning,” Elek said.

During the visit, three Burlington Police Department personnel simulated a robbery scenario that was not directed at students or faculty, the department said in a release. Police said they had communicated with school staff last month about the details of the demonstration, “including saying that the training incident would involve ‘using fake firearms in a mock shooting.’”

Police said they asked school staff whether the demonstration would be suitable for the student group, saying “It is about as real life as you can get, and is certainly exactly the sort of thing we deal with most frequently.”

“YES Program staff responded, ‘I think these students will be fine with this simulation. We will give a heads up to parents and students,’” according to the police release.

But in an email sent to families of the students after the incident, school officials wrote the simulation “was startling for many students and may have left some feeling confused and frightened as a result,” the VTDigger reported.

A representative for Burlington Mayor Emma Mulvaney-Stanak also told CNN that parents and students were upset following the demonstration.

The Burlington Police Department said it “apologizes to any students in attendance who were upset by the specific scenario and crime scene portion of the presentation.”

CNN sought comment from the Burlington School District.

Mayor Mulvaney-Stanak said in a statement to CNN that she apologizes “for the harm and distress this incident caused Burlington High School students – students who have tragically grown up in a society where gun violence, including in school settings, has become commonplace.”

The mayor said she hopes the school district and police department “will take responsibility for the harm caused and be self-reflective about all the ways this should have been handled differently and will not be repeated in the future.”

The police department said it will be meeting with students and staff on Friday to discuss the presentation and its impact.

“We hope that this can be a reflective growth opportunity for all parties,” the department said.

CNN’s Elizabeth Wolfe contributed to this report.

Everything You Need To Know About Getting Transcripts for Colleges

presentation high school transcript request

A high school transcript is like an official and thorough report card. It’s a record of your academic performance and accomplishments throughout high school, making it one of the most important factors in college admissions decisions, if not the most important.

What information is included in my high school transcript?

Transcripts include tons of information, such as:

  • The name of each class you took, from freshman year to the present
  • The grade you received in each class
  • When you took each class
  • Your GPA ( weighted and unweighted )
  • Your class rank (if your school does class rankings )
  • In some cases, your attendance record and any serious disciplinary actions (e.g. suspensions)
  • Sometimes, your standardized test scores and honors/awards

The transcript demonstrates your strength of schedule, improvement over time (if applicable), and overall performance in high school. Colleges view the transcript as a solid way to predict how you’ll perform in college.

It’s your job to earn the best grades possible, but it’s not your job to send your transcripts to schools. However, you do need to understand the basics of getting transcripts for colleges so that this vital step in the application process goes smoothly.

Who sends my transcripts?

Your high school guidance counselor will be responsible for sending your transcripts to colleges. You can’t personally provide the transcript because it must be an “official transcript” received directly from your high school.

If a college does accept unofficial transcripts, you can request one from your guidance counselor and send it yourself. However, most schools will specifically request an official copy of your transcript. These are verified transcripts that may have a stamp, seal, or letterhead from your school.

In some cases, your guidance counselor will also need to send a mid-year report and/or final report of your grades. This is so colleges can ensure that you’ve kept your grades up and didn’t stop taking school seriously after receiving your acceptance letter. (So no matter what, be sure to finish senior year strong!)

How are transcripts sent?

Different high schools have different procedures for sending transcripts to schools. It’s likely that your guidance counselor(s) will host a presentation explaining this process sometime during your junior year, often through English classes or a grade-level assembly.

If not, or if you miss the presentation, visit your guidance counselor and ask about the procedure for requesting transcripts. You may need to fill out a request form on paper or online, and some schools require a small fee per transcript. Some high schools will have you request the transcript via a third-party site, which will carry a fee.

Whatever the procedure is, follow all instructions precisely. Provide your guidance counselor with a complete list of the colleges you’re applying to, and do this well in advance of the deadlines.

You should also pay attention to each college’s instructions for sending transcripts. You may simply need to have your guidance counselor attach it to your School Report in the Common Application or Coalition Application, or it may need to be sent individually via snail mail, email, or another type of form. If you’re confused, your counselor can help.

Some colleges do not require a transcript at the time of admission. They’ll allow you to unofficially report your grades, then request an official transcript if you’re accepted.

If this is the case, be sure to tell the truth when self-reporting. If you’re caught in a lie, your application will be rescinded. This is basically the school telling you, “Never mind. You’re not accepted after all,” and it’s not fun.

What’s my role in getting transcripts to colleges?

Your role is to ensure that your guidance counselor has all the information he or she needs to get your transcripts to colleges in a timely fashion.

If you’re not absolutely certain that your counselor has already sent your transcripts, follow up two weeks before the deadline. Remember, guidance counselors are busy, and many are working with hundreds of students. It’s your job to make sure that your transcripts don’t fall through the cracks.

You’ll also need to verify that colleges have actually received your transcript. In most cases, you will be able to do so through the applicant portal on the school’s website. If there is an issue, talk to your guidance counselor and/or call the school’s admission office.

How will colleges evaluate my transcript?

Colleges evaluate your transcript in context. This means they do much more than simply glance at your GPA. They’ll consider the difficulty level of your school and the courses available to you. For instance, a 3.7 GPA at your school could be a greater accomplishment than a 4.0 at a less challenging school.

Admissions teams also look at the difficulty level of the classes you took. Did you choose to challenge yourself with some of the most difficult courses available at your school? If you received straight “A’s” while taking several AP and honors courses, this is a much more significant accomplishment than receiving straight “A’s” in only entry-level courses.

And, of course, they will review your performance in each class. Have you consistently earned solid grades in your classes? If you struggled early in your high school career, did you recover and finish strong?

Through a combination of these factors, colleges will try to predict how well you’ll perform in rigorous college courses.

Overall, you should aim to perform well in the most challenging courses available at your school. Your transcripts will show colleges that you’re capable of successfully navigating college-level work.

Final Thoughts: Everything You Need To Know About Getting Transcripts for Colleges

  • High school transcripts provide colleges with extremely valuable information about your academic performance throughout high school. It’s essential that this part of your application(s) is handled in an effective and timely manner.
  • Your guidance counselor will mostly handle sending college transcripts, but you need to stay on top of the process to ensure all of your colleges receive your transcripts by the deadline .
  • Prepare a list of the colleges you’re applying to, along with their deadlines, and provide it to your counselor. Check with your guidance counselor about the process for requesting transcripts, and follow all directions exactly.
  • Follow up with your guidance counselor two weeks before the deadline to ensure your transcripts have been sent. Then, continue checking the college’s application portal and/or your Common Application until you see confirmation that your transcripts have been received.

If it’s not quite time for you to send transcripts yet, make sure yours are up to scratch. Take challenging courses, study hard, complete assignments on time, and earn the highest grades possible.

This way, you’ll be sure to submit impressive transcripts that give you a major advantage during the college admissions process.

Request a Transcript from a High School

by Clearinghouse Academy | Jul 24, 2019

This lesson demonstrates how to request a transcript from a high school.

Transcript As a Transcript Center user, let’s explore how to request and retrieve transcripts and documents.

In addition to exchanging transcripts, Transcript Center may be used to exchange other student documents and records, such as immunization records. If your state model allows, all documents may be transmitted to and from secondary and postsecondary institutions.

To request a transcript or document, from your Transcript Center Home page, select “Request a student document”. Please note only one request may be done at a time.

Use the “Search for an Institution tab” to select the institution from which the student document is to be requested. There are several filters to help narrow the list of participating Transcript Center institutions.

If you frequently request transcripts from the desired recipient, use the Most Frequently Used Recipients tab to identify the institution quicker.

Once the institution is located, select the radio button to the left of the institution’s name.

The institution now displays in the “Requested Institution” section. Select “Next”.

Fill out the requested student’s information. Required fields are identified with an asterisk (*).

Next, indicate the urgency of your request.

If you require the student’s end of term grades for the current term, select ‘End of Term’. Otherwise, select immediate.

Upload any documents you would like included in your request.

Lastly, select the checkbox for any statement that is true in the Certify Information section.

Your selections are provided to the receiving institution of your request to determine if the student has consented to the release of his, her, or their record as required by FERPA.

Select the first statement if the student has applied or is currently enrolled at your institution.

Select the second statement if the student has provided your institution with consent to obtain records of their previous academic performance. For this selection, we recommend attaching a copy of the consent form to this request.

When you’re ready, select Next.

Review your request.

You have the option to include a message with your delivery.

Select “Send”.

Your request has been submitted. The confirmation page includes a Tracking number, which you can use to inquire about the status of the request.

Select “Request another record” to request a transcript from another institution, or “Done” to return to the Transcript Center home page.

For questions or more information, please email our support team.

Jewish student group removed from NJ high school yearbook, sparking investigation

by JACKSON WALKER | Crisis in the Classroom

EAST BRUNSWICK, N.J. (CITC) — A New Jersey high school is under fire after a photo of a Jewish student group was replaced with one featuring Muslim students in its yearbook.

The photo of East Brunswick High School's Jewish Student Union Club was swapped out in the school's yearbook released this month, according to East Brunswick Mayor Brad Cohen. Cohen wrote in a press release Tuesday the yearbook also contains "a complete absence" of the names of the Jewish students.

East Brunswick Public Schools are currently conducting an investigation, according to Cohen. The mayor called the matter "blatant" antisemitism and said he has been "assured" new yearbooks will be distributed eventually.

Accuracy in Media President Adam Guillette, who has worked to expose antisemitism in schools nationwide, echoed Cohen's sentiments to Crisis in the Classroom (CITC) Thursday.

It’s undeniable that the dramatic increase in antisemitism comes from radical DEI ideas pushed in K-12 education,” Guillette said. “East Brunswick Public Schools claim to value the ‘rich diversity’ of the community but that doesn’t seem to extend to Jewish students.”

“The district has a dozen members of their Affirmative Action and diversity/equity team and I’m not surprised that they haven’t issued any statement at all,” he added. “These radicals don’t actually care about diversity, they only care about pushing radical ideas.”

East Brunswick Public Schools Superintendent Victor Valeski told NBC4 the high school is unsure whether the act was a mistake or an antisemitic act.

"I sent a message out to the community today saying that we’re investigating and I wished people would give us time to investigate, not rush to judgment," Valeski reportedly said. "I’m gonna wait to find out what the investigation finds, because it could be a legitimate mistake. So, I don’t want to call it antisemitism yet."

Cohen said Tuesday "hate has no place" in East Brunswick, adding antisemitism will not be "tolerated."

East Brunswick High School did not immediately respond to a request for comment from CITC Thursday.
