Presentation BVM School’s annual Christmas Bazaar this Friday and Saturday

Presentation BVM School will host its annual Christmas Bazaar on Friday from 10:00am to 2:00pm and on Saturday from 9:00am to 5:00pm at 100 Old Soldiers Road, Cheltenham. The event will feature local vendors, crafts, sweets, children’s games and activities, 50/50 raffles, coffee treats, face painting and more. Santa will arrives at 12:00pm and will be available for purchased pictures. The school’s kitchen will be offering homemade chili and soups, hoagies, hot dogs, pizza, meatballs, fries, and nachos. When do Christmas and New Years’ markets open in Russia this year?

If you’re trying to research the answer to this question, you may have run into some trouble… that’s because the opening dates for festive markets in Russia vary by town, city & region.

That’s why we created this page for you, so you can peep the opening dates for Russia’s Christmas and New Year’s Markets and events quickly and at a glance.

This list is by no means exhaustive, and includes mainly bigger festive markets that we could find official websites and dates for. Let us know in the comments if you have any more we should add.

NOTE: Most Christmas markets don’t announce their confirmed dates until a few months before, so please excuse the sparse list for the time being! We’ll be sure to update this list with more dates as soon as they are released. Let us know in the comments if you know of any we should add for 2024!

New Years & Christmas Market Opening Dates in Russia 2024

So, when are Christmas markets opening in Russia?

First – it’s important to note that in Russia, they celebrate Christmas according to the Orthodox Calendar.

This means that the Christmas they celebrate takes place in January.

However, you’ll be able to find Christmas decorations and festivities throughout December as well, particularly in larger cities like Moscow and St Petersburg.

Second – it’s important for visitors to understand that Christmas was actually banned in Soviet Russia for 75 years. Following the 1917 Revolution, religious celebrations like Christmas were outlawed, and so Christmas wasn’t openly celebrated until the 90s.

During this time, New Years’ became the go-to festive celebration – they even embraced New Years’ trees in lieu of Christmas ones!

And while Christmas is now celebrated throughout Russia, New Year’s remains an important fixture of the holiday season, hence why many of the festive fairs in Russia are actually New Year’s Bazaars/Fairs, rather than strictly Christmas ones.

As of February 2024, dates have not yet been announced for Russia’s largest Christmas markets.

As well as traditional fairs, there is an endless amount of fun to be had for all ages:

• Watch ballet on ice at Revolution Square, with famous performances such as the Nutcracker and Swan Like
• Ride down Russia’s largest ice slide, or ice skate, sledge, and play winter games
• Learn about the traditions of 19th century Christmas in Russia
• Discover festive delicacies from Russia and abroad, including a gingerbread village
• Browse the Christmas book market and listen to Russian winter poems
• Children can take part in craft workshops and cooking classes

The “Journey to Christmas” Festival at Sokolniki

This unique fair is a dream for arts and crafts lovers coming to Moscow for this date. You will certainly find the perfect souvenir among all of the different crafts offered. There are also gifts to inspire creativity, such as embroidery, scrapbooking, soap-making kits, and kits suitable for children. The fair organises over some workshops for all ages. Small performances and parades are held, as well as craft competitions!

Orthodox Christmas Gift Fair in Sokolniki

The Sokolniki gift fair is a traditional market which allows visitors to experience the rich traditions of Russian Orthodox culture. Monasteries, churches and church farms from all over the country will set up stalls offering religious literature and icons, jewellery, clothing and applied folk art souvenirs, as well as honey, jams and products from church farms.

Those looking for original gifts should head to the Eastern Fairytale fair at VNDKh, Russia’s largest exhibition centre. Vendors from Russia, Central Asia, the Far East and South-East Asia offer a multitude of gifts. Browse ceramics, unique artwork, ethically-produced clothes, and jewellery with precious stones. You can also find eastern health products and medicines, natural cosmetics, and exotic teas and spices. 

For those searching for specifically Russian handicrafts, in the same building you will find the New Year’s Gift Fair. Vendors from throughout Russia sell traditional scarves and hats, hand-embroidered garments and linen, as well as jewellery and ornaments.

The Papoose Club Annual Holiday Bazaar will be held on the first full weekend of December at the Hemingway Elementary School in Ketchum. The Holiday Bazaar is a juried arts show that features wonderful hand-made gifts from more than 70 artists from across the Intermountain West.

Saturday, December 2: 9 a.m. - 5 p.m. Sunday, December 3: 9:30 a.m. - 3 p.m.

Wood River Valley’s top market for buying gifts for friends and family: sweets, ceramics, handblown glass, clothing, jewelry, handbags, birdhouses, decorative objects, textiles, and more.

Vendors Selection Process: A committee will review each application, and vendors will be juried on the basis of the criteria listed below.  All vendors will be juried on a yearly basis to ensure variety each season. 1. Offers high-quality, authentic merchandise. 2. Handcrafted goods and hard-to-find or unusual items that are not widely commercially available are strongly encouraged. 3. Resale of products is not allowed, all products sold must be handmade by the vendor All vendors are required to participate on both days of the event. In addition, we seek to provide a variety of items in terms of price point, selection and style. Therefore, even vendors who meet the criteria noted above might not be chosen because other vendors offer the sam e or similar wares.
