मेरा परिवार पर निबंध 500 शब्दों में (long Essay on My Family in 500 words in Hindi)

मेरी जीवन शैली में परिवार का महत्व (importance of family in my lifestyle)

परिवार के अंदर बड़ों का महत्व (importance of elders in the family)

500 Words Essay On My Family

A family is a fundamental building block of society. One of the core philosophies of India from the time of Upanishads to this moment is “Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam”, meaning ‘Entire world is one big Family’. Family plays a crucial role in our lives. It is the most important thing that impacts us from birth to death.

We are reflections of our families. Family is the ones who unconditionally love us, financially provide for us and emotionally support us without expecting any returns. Indian society thrives on families. Having a home to go to where people love you is a blessing. I’m privileged to have one.

I come from a family of 6: my grandparents, my parents, my sister, and me. We stay together at our home, and my grandmother believes home is people, not a place. My family is my support system. They know me inside out. I feel the safest and most comfortable with them. My family is my first school where I learnt the importance of honesty, discipline, culture and tradition, and much more. My parents and grandparents were the first teachers who shaped me.

My Parents | My mother is the nerve centre of my family, a true example of poise, dignity, beauty, confidence, and brains. She is my aspiration for the true essence of love, compassion, and strength. She manages both her household and work efficiently. My father is a disciplined, self-made, honest businessman. He taught me the importance of time and discipline. His mere presence gives me a sense of safety and hope. He is a dutiful son, a loving husband, a caring father, and a responsible family man. He always makes the atmosphere at home cheerful and jolly with his impeccable humour.

My Grandparents | I have learned many life lessons from my grandparent's stories. My introduction to the family's culture and traditions is because of them. I like spending my time with them. They indulge me in their past stories before bed, which are both fun and thought-provoking at the same time. My grandparents are the rock on which my family relies.

My Sister | My sister is three years older than me. She is an intelligent, smart girl who is my guiding mentor in my studies. We both have a pet dog named “Mowgli’ who we love and care for very much.

Significance Of Family In My Life

They are my entire support system.

They are my source of knowledge, learning, and character-building.

My Family is an accurate judge of action, and they know where I need improvement.

My Family is the safe and secure net that protects me from the world's threats.

I like to think of my family as a jigsaw puzzle. Each member is like a piece of a mystery puzzle with different individuality and different purpose. Still, when put together, it perfectly conveys one clear message of a happy, peaceful, lovely life. Family plays a vital role in the life of a person as well as in society. A healthy family leads to a good community. Family is the unconditional source of love and support. They support us in all our ups and downs.

A family is God’s greatest gift to all living beings on earth including human beings. A person without family and its love is never complete and happy. A family is one with whom you can share all your joys and sorrows. Family stands by you at the toughest situations in life. Family gives you the warmth and affection that you may not get anywhere else. I too am blessed with such a family. My family has always been my strength. My mother, father, sister and I complete my family.

My Mother

My mother is the strongest woman I have ever seen in my life. She is a super woman. She can manage everything at the same time so beautifully and confidently. She is a fine individual with poise and dignity. She is the pivot around whom our family revolves. She has raised us with important values in life. She explained to us the true essence of love and compassion. She also tells us the importance of spirituality. She has given utmost importance to our education. She coordinates with our teachers in school and helps us with our weaknesses. My mother is an amazing cook and takes care of what we like to eat. She’s  just not a housewife. She is an entrepreneur too. She owns a restaurant managing a staff of 30 boys. It is indeed not an easy job but she manages everything very efficiently. She is an inspiration to all of us. She is indispensable to our family.

My father is a man of strong principles. His presence at home itself gives us a sense of security and hope. He is very gentle, disciplined and strict. He is a software engineer by qualification and works for a multinational company. Since the headquarters of his company is in The United States of America, he frequently needs to travel. I know he feels very sorry that he is not able to spend much time with us due to work pressure and travel but whenever he is at home he makes the best of it. He has a good sense of humor. He makes us laugh with his jokes and keeps telling us about his work experience. I get a lot of insight from it and clarity of what field I can take when I grow up. I have learnt a most important and valuable lesson from him that is being content in life with whatever I have. The atmosphere in our home becomes so cheerful and joyful when he is around. It gives a feeling of a complete family. He is a dutiful son towards his mother. Even though my grandmother doesn’t live with us, my father carries all his duties and responsibilities for her very diligently. I feel proud to be his son. I want to grow like him and take care of my parents the way he does.

My sister is three years older than me. She is a very soft and gentle girl. She is my best friend and a confidant. We fight on silly things but I know she really cares for me and loves me a lot. She always protects me from getting scolded by my mother. She is an artist and helps me with all my drawings. My sister supports and stands by me when seniors in my school bully me. I feel very secure around her when I am away from my parents.

To Conclude

My family has taught me to be a better person. I am blessed and fortunate enough to have such a wonderful family who has taught me important values in life. I am very grateful and I thank God for the most precious gift.

❓ Essay Questions About Family

As a student, you are likely to get an assignment to write about the importance of relationships. That’s why you can be in need of a good friends and family topic. In this case, you’ve found the right page. Our experts have prepared a list of ideas related to the subject.

Writing a family essay is an easy way to boost your grade and explore the things that matter to you. However, to get a high grade on this assignment, it is essential to structure your paper well. Essays that are organized logically will help you to stand out from the crowd and earn your tutor’s appreciation. Here are some tips on structuring family essays:

1⃣ Narrow down the topic

If your professor didn’t provide a set of topics to choose from, you would need to decide on the focus of your essay. The concept of family is too general, and failing to narrow it down might cost you marks. Think about your interests and experience. Do you want to write about what family means to you? Or would you rather write an essay on family problems? Whatever your interests are, choose a subject that can be explored in-depth within the specified page limit.

2⃣ Check samples online

This is an excellent way to prepare for writing your essay because you can examine how other people structured their work. Luckily, there are many family essay examples and sample papers online that you could use. While reading those, note the key points and how they follow one another in a sequence. Consider how the structure of each paper can be improved to make it more coherent. Did the writer miss some points? Did they provide examples in support of each argument? Write out your notes to keep them in mind while working on your essay.

3⃣ Start by writing one to three titles at the top of the page

Family essay titles tend to be very generic, so you need to choose one that suits the intended content of the paper. Examine each title to see if it is precise and can catch the reader’s attention immediately. For example, if you would like to write about a family relationship, you could use a quote about the importance of family as a title.

4⃣ Create an outline based on your key points

There are typically three parts in an essay: introduction, main body, and conclusion. The first part should contain the most basic information about the topic, as well as your purpose or thesis statement. A family essay body is where you present the main ideas and arguments in a logical sequence. The conclusion should be the last part you write, so you don’t need to plan it along with the other two components. After writing the outline, go through each point again to see if they link together nicely. If not, see if you could move some points around to make them fall into a logical sequence.

5⃣ Add evidence to support each point

Once you’ve completed the outline, add more details to each section. You could use the evidence gathered as part of secondary research, as well as your thoughts and personal experience. For instance, if you have a section about what a happy family means, think whether you know any families that fit the description or explore statistics on happiness among married couples with children.

Following the tips above will help you to create a backbone for your paper, making writing a hundred times easier! If you need any more assistance with your essay, search our website for family essay topics, writing advice, and more!

A family is one of the greatest gift god has given to all living creatures on the earth including humans. It is a privilege to have a happy family as not everyone in the world has it.

The joy of living with your parents, fighting with your siblings over petty can just make you smile the moment you think of it. In order to inculcate the values of a family in the students, we have composed some short essays for students.

These essays are suited for students of all ages and classes. Not only these essays shall give an insight on how a family should be but shall also enrich the students with the moral values of a family.

Audience: The below given essays are exclusively written for kids, children and school students.

Family is important to every one of us and we all love our family. Wherever we go in this world and whatever we may achieve, our heart and soul will always be in our home because it is where our beautiful family is. Nothing in this world can be stronger than the bonding of the blood . The members of the same family may have differences of opinions, may quarrel often for silly things but in spite of all these it is our family that supports us during our ups and downs.

As the saying goes, “ Family is the best thing you could ever wish for. They are there for you during the ups and downs and love you no matter what”.

Contrary to this saying, we cannot choose our family as we choose our friends. But I can say that I’m blessed with a wonderful family. My family is very small with four members – my mother, my father, my elder sister and me. My family is a middle class family and my father is officially the bread winner of our family. My mother supports him financially by taking tuitions for school children.

We do not have much money or wealth but what my family has in abundance is love for each other which cannot be replaced by anything else in this world. My father and my mother are the role models to my sister and me. They struggle a lot to give us a better life. More than anything they have taught us discipline and morals of life which is helping us to lead our lives in a righteous path even today.

I cannot ask anything more to God since he has already showered me with my family which I treasure the most every second and will safeguard even in the future.

The family is a valuable god gift which plays a most crucial role in every individual’s life. I love my family very much because all of my family members stand in my good as well as bad times. From moral teachings to love and support, my family has always helped me without any demand. There is no doubt that we experience our biggest triumphs when we really connect to them.

My family is like a strong pillar for me, on which I can rely blindly anytime I require support. From my family, I have learned the social graces of loyalty & cooperation.

My family consists of my grandfather, my grandmother, my mother, my father, two young sisters and myself. My grandparents are the pillars of my family and my grandfather is the head of my family. He is the one whose decision relating to any matter is final and all of us do respect it.

Right from my childhood, my family members have prepared me for the challenges that I’ll face in the years ahead. In addition to this, all of my family members help and serve each other at times of need. These qualities that I have learnt from my family has helped me to shape my adult life in a right manner.

I am really very attached to my grandfather. He holds an excellent life experience because he has already faced so many ups and downs. My Grandfather has helped me to build my perception & vision towards society.

My family has always been there to motivate and encourage me to overcome all difficulties in life and achieve success. The role of every member in my family is unique and important in their own way. I thank God that I have grown up in a family full of love and discipline. My family values will definitely help me in becoming a better person.

A person without family and its love never becomes completely happy in his/her life. I am complete and happy with my family that includes five members. My family is a group of five including me, father, mother, brother, and sister. Family bonding is a unique type of love that gives you every lesson needed to live a harmonious life.

Growing under the supervision of a caring and loving family will increase our social values and overall well-being. Each member of my family carries out equal responsibility in sculpting the strong bonding needed for a better future and develop moral importance in each other.

My father owns a successful business of office stationery store. He uses the money to cover all our expenses and give a better lifestyle to the family. He works hard day and night to get us better education, food, home, etc. He hides all his tiredness when he comes home after a long day to spend quality time with us.

My mother is a talented homemaker who also does a part-time tailoring at home. She does all her duties with at most interest, from taking care of us to all the household chores and finds time to pursue her passion as well. She is a multi-tasker and does all the tasks from helping us in our studies to preparing delicious healthy foods to sculpt us into a better human being.

My brother is an engineering graduate and does a job in a well-known company. He is my best well-wisher and helps me in all ups and downs. My sister is also an engineering graduate and an employee in an IT company. She always finds time to help me with all my difficulties and she is my secret keeper too.

My family is a lifeline to whom I can run to, whatever may be the situation I am facing. My family guides me to be a good person and help me in nurturing good values. We, humans, are animals that live together spreading love and care for each other, and this togetherness is called family. The absence of such a divine bonding make us equal to animals.

Family value and growing in such a caring surrounding helps me to pass all the struggles and hardships that I face in my daily life. Whatever be the situation we are facing, our family will never leave us alone. My family is a blessing for me and I value everyone in my family with equal respect and love.

Most of the people in the world are blessed with having a family. A family, with whom you can share all your joys and sorrows, who is there to guide you through your growing years, who stands by you in the toughest of the situations. I too am blessed to have such a family.

My family is one the most bizarre family in the world. We are four people, my mother, my father, my younger brother and me. While my father is the one who does work for a living, it is my mother who is the boss of the house. My father is a humble person. He is an officer in a government department. My mother is a housewife. It is our mother who takes care of our studies as our father is often busy with his official assignments and even travels for days together. We just miss him when he is not at home.

He never scolds us. But, our mother is just the opposite. She wants us to remain disciplined and we often get scolded by her. However, our father comes to our rescue most of the times. My brother, still in school is the one with whom I love to spend my time the most. Not because I love to play with him, but because, being the elder sister, I enjoy instructing him and showing him who is more powerful at home. He, at a time, seems so helpless when our mother says to obey his sister. I just love that moment. But not all days are the same. I hate having to study all along while he gets to play more than me.

The Atmosphere in my Family:

We largely have a peaceful atmosphere at home. After school, our time is spent on studying, playing and watching television, which of course our mother does not like. Unlike other couples, my mother and father seldom have a fight. In fact, as soon we see an argument brewing up, one of them just withdraws and it is just rare to see a heated conversation between them. This is what I like the most about them as I feel that my parents are so cool. It is only me and brother who love to fight with each other.

However, we know that behind those fights, it is actually our love for each other which binds us together. I just enjoy being at home spending time with my parents and my brother. I just feel how bad it would be when tomorrow I and my brother shall move on for our professional lives and we shall not be able to spend much time together. However, it is the memories of today which shall be with me forever and will bring a smile on my face anytime when I feel low.

The Importance of a Family:

A family is said to be the first school of a child. It is from here you start to learn how to speak, walk and interact with the world. It is important to value the importance of a family in one’s life. At times, people feel that they are grown-ups and that their parent’s advice does not matter anymore, but that is not true. It is the elders of the family who at any given of time would know the world better than us and we should all respect our family members and love our siblings as well. It is the family who builds our character and we should feel fortunate to have a family around us.

Introduction

My family values are what I take so dear to my heart because they have made me what I am today and I plan on passing these great values to my children in future. Every family has those things, acts and values that they hold in high esteem and they cherish so much. These vales have become a part of them: most times, it is what distinguishes the traits in each family and in some ways it makes or mars the future of the family members. Same applies to my family, we have some set values that has become a part of us and it has made my life a lot better because I have become a better person who is not only valuable to himself but also to the society at large. I will be sharing some of these values with you.

My Family Values:

Some of my family values include:

1. Honesty:

This is a principle that is highly protected in my family. My dad has this saying that, “honesty is the best policy.” Ever since I was little, my family has taught me how to be honest and the benefits that lie within. Sometimes, my parents even test us in ways we were not expecting and a reward is given to the person that comes out honest. This is one of my family values that I cherish so much and I am proud that it is what my family hold in high esteem.

2. Kindness to Others:

This is not a common trait to all. My mom has this belief that if the world and everybody in it shows love and kindness to one another, there will be no hatred and wars will be eradicated. This is a family value that we cherish so much. I learnt to show love to everybody. Even when we did not have much, my parents will still give to those who are needy. My dad says that the world is like a river, we would eventually flow into one another later and you do not know the future, the person you helped today might eventually be of help to you tomorrow.

3. Education:

This is a value that has been passed from generation to generation in my family. My dad would say that education is the best legacy you can give to a child. My family does everything in their capacity for you to get a sound and benefitting education. The acquisition of knowledge is also quite important. All of us try to gain more and more knowledge because we all have a family slogan that says “knowledge is power and that power makes me a hero.”

4. Dress and Appearance:

This is a religious value we cherish in my family. My dad would say that you are addressed the way you dress. I do not want to be address wrongly and give out a wrong impression. So, our appearance really matter a lot to us and the way we dress.

Conclusion:

Every family has one thing or the other that they hold in high esteem and tend to pass on from generation to generation. This is what makes a family a united sect not because we are related by blood but because of we share the same values.

Introduction:

Why I love my family is a question that has been floating through my mind for a very long time because no matter how hard I try to pin out a reason why I love them, I just can’t find one. This can be due to fact that they mean the whole world to me and I will do anything for them. I love my family a lot and I would like to share some of the reasons why I love my family and will never trade them for anything.

Why I Love My Family:

I have a family that consists of 6 people: my father, my mother and four children which includes me. For you to understand why I love my family I will tell you a little about each of them and why I love them so much.

My father is the best father in the world: well, that’s what I say. He is a business manager. I look up to my father a lot because I will like to take a lot of his behaviours and make it mine. He taught me to be contented with whatever I have. We did not have much when I was growing up; my dad lost his job and still did not allow anything of the pressure change how he behaved to us at home. He is caring, gentle, accommodating and disciplined.

My mum is the best cook in the world. I do not know where I would be today without my mum. I owe her a lot. She is a teacher by profession and this fascinates me a lot because not only is she inculcating knowledge in the young minds of tomorrow, she is also building the future of our society at large. I want to be like my mum. I remember those times when she had to sacrifice when the most precious of her things just to make me happy. She is loving, caring, understanding, accommodating. In fact, she is everything you can ever wish for in a mother.

My elder sisters are the best. Although they can be frustrating sometimes but that is mostly because of my stubbornness. They pretend they do not really care but deep inside they do. The things they do even subconsciously say otherwise. I remember a day in elementary school, I was being bullied a boy in class. On this particular day, he hit me. Unknowing to me, my sister heard about it and she beat the boy and made him apologise to me, I felt so happy that day because I had someone who had my back.

My brother is one of the best gifts I have received. He is the last child and this gives him an opportunity to be annoying if you know what I mean. He is joyful and always ready to heed correction. There was this day, I heard him bragging to his friends about how awesome I am, and I was the happiest that day.

We all have one reason or the other on why we love our family. I love mine because they are the best gift I could ever ask for and the fact that they have been there for me through the good, bad and funny times.

Importance of family is something that is greatly overlooked and underrated in the world we live in today. The definition that the family had about one hundred years before now was very clear. Back then, a family was believed to be a unit that consisted of the father that was in charge of the finances of the family, a mother whose primary duty was to look after the home and take care of the children and then there were the children. Largely based on the region you are from, a family can also include members of the extended family like aunts, uncles and grandparents. This type of family system is referred to as joint family.

Family Importance:

A family that is important is one that is very strong. If a family is going to be very strong, there is a need for the bond between them to be very strong. Bonds that help in keeping the members of a family with each other are relationships. If there are very strong relationships among all the members of a family, there is going to be stronger commitment between all of them and the family as a unit will be very important.

Better communication is also a result of family relationships that are very strong. If all the family members can take time out to talk and know each other well, the bond between them is bound to be very strong. Even if the conversations are about big things or small things, it does not really matter. The most important thing is that all family members stay connected to one another. It is very important that they all list to each other and understand every member.

How to make Family Bonds Very Strong:

We have various things that can help our family bond to improve.

A few of them include:

1. Love: love is the most important thing we need for our bonds as a family to improve. When we love the members in our family, we will also be able to know all about privacy, intimacy, caring, belonging and sharing. When there is love in a family, the family will prosper.

2. Loyalty: loyalty is something that comes as a result of love. Family members should stay devoted to each other. It is important that we are able to count on our family to have our back anytime we are facing problems.

The importance of family can never be overstated even though we live in a different time now and our attitudes to relationships, marriage and what a family should be has changed. The family is something that we need to help share our problems and be there for us anytime we have issues. A lot of the things that were not acceptable in the past and we now see as normal. Even with all the changes that the society has effected on our family system, the family still remains the major foundation of our society and this will remain the same.

My family is the best gift I have got. A family can be simply said to mean a social group of different people in our society that includes one or more parents and also their children. In a family, every member of the family commits to other members of the family in a mutual relationship. A family is a very important unit and the smallest unit in the society. A family whether a big one or a small one is of very great importance and use to all of its members and is believed to be the unit of our society that is strongest because the society is formed from the coming together and culmination of various families.

In many cultures, the family serves a child’s first school where the child learns all about their traditions and cultures more importantly learn about all the rudimentary values in life. A family is very essential in the teaching of healthy habits and good manners to all the members of the family. It gives the members of the family the opportunity to become people with better character in our society. I feel very lucky to be born into a small and lovely family; I learnt a lot of things from my family.

I am from a middle class and average family with six members (my father, my mother, my grandmother, my grandfather, my younger brother and me). My grandfather is the head of the family and we all respect and listen to him. He is really wise and tries to advise each and every one of us using his many life experiences. He has been involved in many interesting and adventurous activities that he tells me about all the time. Most of the time, he has the final say on all of our family issues and he does his best to make all his decisions impartial.

Any time we are eating today as a family, he sits at the top of the table; we all have designated seats at the dining table. When my brother and I are available, my grandfather teaches us about our traditions and cultures. My grandfather is very friendly and has a cool and great personality and tries to talk nicely and calmly to everyone passing across his message without being rude. He helps my brother and sometimes me with our assignments. He majorly teaches us about all of the tools we need to be successful in life including punctuality, discipline, moral, cleanliness, continuity, honesty, hard work and trustworthiness.

My lovely grandmother is one of the nicest people I know, she tells my brother and I lovely stories every night. My father is a civil engineer and he is very hardworking, sincere and punctual. He is the breadwinner of the family and does his best to provide for every member of the family even if that means he has to work extra hours. My mother is very sweet and takes care of every member of the family even though she works as an accountant at a firm. She wakes up very early in the morning to make preparations for the day. My brother is a funny and jovial person that enjoys sporting activities and I love him so much.

Sometimes I wish my cousins, uncles and aunts lived with us, I love having them around. There are a lot of advantages and disadvantages of having everyone around. I have highlighted some below.

Some advantages are:

1. It gives a better routine of living that can contribute to a proper growth.

2. Having a joint family helps in following the numerous principles of an equitable economy and helps teach discipline and respect. It also teaches us how to share the burden of other family members.

3. There is the understanding of having to adjust to the needs of other family members.

4. The children in a large family get to grow up in a happy environment because they have children of their age around that they can play with.

5. All the members of a joint family are usually very disciplined and responsible as everyone has to follow the instructions of the family head.

Some of the disadvantages include:

1. There is always the chance of a rift or fight between the family members because of the possible imbalance of feelings of oneness, brotherly love and feeling of generosity.

2. There is a chance of the members of the family that earn very high looking down on members of the family that do not.

The concept of family is important in India for every individual. Family defines an individual background in terms of social relations and growth. Families influence the lives of individuals from childhood to adulthood especially in decisions concerning life milestones like marriage and career paths. Indian families live together for up to four generations under one roof and they manage to maintain lose family relations compared to other families across the globe. Indian families tend to stick to their cultural practices as a family and they maintain religious practices that cut across the family. Elders in Indian families are respected by the members of the family and their opinions are considered during decision making.

What Family Really Means :

Basic knowledge defines a family as a group of people who share genetic and legal bonds. However, the concept of family means a lot more for other people than just the bond and it incorporates the concepts of culture and religion. In India, the concept of family differs from what the rest of the world perceives as family.

Families in India go beyond nuclear and extend to wider circles, whereby the extended family lives together and are closely related. The relationships in the family are strong such that cousins are considered siblings and aunts and uncles are considered parents. Family also means the unconditional love among the members of the family whereby there is support in terms of finances and emotions.

Why the Family is so important:

The family plays a central role in lives of individuals in teaching of moral values. Parents, aunts, uncles and grandparents have been known to teach the children on morality and disciplinary issue s in most cultures. Both spiritual and moral values are instilled through family. Family give a sense of belonging to individuals because they are over by the family and supported at all times.

A family will always support its members with needs including financial and emotional needs. In a family, there has been established levels of satisfaction and happiness from the joy of being together. Families also helping community development through contributions and participating in activities in the community. The family is important in the society in maintaining order, discipline and peace.

I come from a big family. My family has not moved to an urban area and so we still live as a wider circle together with the extended family. In my nuclear family, I am the first born of four children. I have one sister and two brothers who are still at school. I have three aunts and two uncles. My cousins are twelve in number and most of them are at school except for the youngest ones.

My grandparents are very old and they do not get out of the house much and are being taken care by my parents and aunts. Most of the children are always at school and the house gets quiet but during holiday, we all unite together as a full house. My family is of the middle class in terms of wealth. Our religion is Hindu and we all practice the Indian cultures and traditions. What I love about my family is that everyone is a good cook and the food is always amazing. Members of my family are kind and respectful and that is why we rarely have disputes. The family support is strong and we all love each other.

Why I love My Family:

Having a big family is interesting because the house always feels warm. As I had earlier mentioned, my family is made of good cooks, which makes me love them. There is always teamwork within the family and good relationships are maintained. I like the adventurous nature of my family because we always have fun whenever we go for holiday vacations or have a family event.

Moral cultural and spiritual values are highly cared for in the society. My family is oriented in good moral values and believe we make a good role model for the society. Despite the influence of education, the family has been able to maintain the culture and traditions of Indian people. The love that exists in my family is precious and that is the most important value of all times because what family without love?

Our Weekend Outings and House Parties:

We do not have many of these in our family because of the different schedules among the members. We only have weekend outings and house parties during holidays. Birthday parties are and weddings are the parties that we frequently have as a family. I love parties at home because the food is usually exceptionally good. Also, the dancing and happy faces. Weekend outings are usually in form of picnics and they are usually full of games.

Cousins Visit during Summer:

My family is young and only three of my cousins are in college. The rest are in high school or elementary schools. Whenever my cousins come home from school, it is a happy moment for the whole family and we host parties to welcome them home. Whenever my older cousins are at home, I enjoy their company and I love to hear stories about college because that is where I will be in a few years’ time.

In the spirit of holidays, we have a vacation or two in a year. During these vacations, plans begin early and when the time comes, it is enjoyable and relaxing. Vacations for us as children tend to be more enjoyable because we have an environment away from home and with minimal parental supervision and we tend to explore and talk among ourselves. Team building during vacations strengthens the bond in families.

Family is a blessing to individuals because that is where they belong and it is what defines them. A good family is built through moral values and team effort. Having family events and parties or vacations re important is strengthening the relationships within a family. A happy individual is definitely from a happy family.

Normally, a small family having one set of parents with two children is called a small nuclear family. A family having one set of parents with three or more children is called a big nuclear family. A family having many sets of parents with their children is called a joint family. My Family is the lovely family of the world for me and an important unit of society. A small or a big family becomes of great importance to its members and is considered as the strongest unit of society because various families together make a nice society. People in my family become very caring and give proper guidance from time to time.

My grandparents lived in the village in their homes and once a year during vacations go to meet them and enjoy by spending time with them. Both of them care for me and my brother, and sisters a lot. They generally tell us nice stories at night which we enjoy. We enjoy every moment with them and catch the moments on my mobile. A family provides lots of benefits to all members where everyone shares equal responsibilities within the family. Everyone in the family is emotionally attached to their happiness and sadness. They determine not just the interactions but the thinking that goes behind those interactions as they are emotionally attached to all so they can easily understand one’s feelings.  They help each other in their bad times which gives them a feeling of security. A family provides love, warmth, and security to its all members throughout life which makes it a complete family. A good and healthy family makes a good society and ultimately a good society is involved in making a good country. Hence, a family has a great influence on how we interact with each other and society at large. Our family imparts the knowledge of these norms to us and these norms are called values.

There are advantages and also disadvantages of having and living in a joint family according to the personal point of view depending on the modernization of living emotions and thoughts with our family members like a joint family providing a better pattern of living which is highly contributing to the proper growth. The members of the joint family understand the mutual understandings and adjustments between the people living in it. It teaches the principles of equitable economy and responsibilities and also guides how to stabilize the burden of other members. The members of the joint family become responsible and disciplined as well as they follow the commands and orders of the head of the family with respect.

Also, certain disadvantages are depending on the mentality of the person there may be a lack of proper rules in the joint family and due to this, the members live in a parasite and afterward they become a habit of feeding on other income. Due to this behavior, they start exploiting other innocent members of the family. In certain cases, the person having high status and money-earning members of the joint family generally insults low status or low money-earning members. There may be chances of separation in the joint families because of an imbalance of feelings of generosity, brotherly love, and feeling of oneness.

Families are a very essential part of our lives, whether you love them or hate them.  They play crucial roles in teaching us how to deal with the world. Without a family, an individual’s identity isn’t ever complete. Our family also gives me the feeling that we belong somewhere, they give us our roots. Knowing where we belong gives us the anchor as we need to deal with everything the world throws at us. Having a family is such a basic necessity that often we take it for granted when we have it. Our families stay with us from our first breath to our last. They provide us with the foundation upon which we build ourselves. To us, family is an extension of our life.

Air Force 1 x Tiffany & Co. "1837" (DZ1382-001)

I'm 38 and single, and I recently realized I want a child. I'm terrified I've missed my opportunity.

  • I didn't want kids and didn't think I'd want to get married again after my divorce.
  • But recently I realized I actually do want to build a life — and a family — with someone.
  • I'm almost 39, and I'm starting to panic about whether my chance to have a child has passed.

Insider Today

I can still picture it. I was 20, sitting on the kitchen countertop with my legs dangling over the cabinets. He was 21, leaning against the stove of the home he hoped we'd share. We'd been dating for nearly two years and were at a standstill.

I was clinging to my dream of moving five hours away to attend the design program at the Art Institute of Seattle. He wanted a simple life with children and home-cooked meals in the little resort town of Coeur d'Alene, Idaho, where we met in sixth grade .

That day in the kitchen, we decided to stay together, and we each gave up something to do that. I would no longer pursue design school and the big-city life I'd always dreamed of, and he'd forgo having children and a wife who prioritized homemaking. I made it clear to him that I did not see motherhood in my future and that he needed to be OK with that. Two years later, we married.

My now ex-husband wanted kids and a stay-at-home wife

My husband thought I'd change, and I thought I could change for him. I told myself that it was silly to go after my dreams and that I should be content in the pretty mountain town where I grew up.

But I grew resentful when he asked where dinner was or complained that his gym clothes hadn't been washed. I did little to hide my disdain for our small-town life. He was a good and hardworking man, but I don't think I made him feel that way.

We were young, foolish, and sweet, thinking our love would allow us to overcome our differences. We were also very wrong.

Related stories

Shortly after I turned 30, we divorced . We were both tired of sacrificing the things that were important to us for each other.

I didn't think I'd want to get married again or have kids

I told my friends and family I'd never get married again. I needed independence, a fulfilling career, and space to chart my own course, and I didn't think marriage fit into that vision. I was content to look toward a future without a husband, children, or the trappings of a "traditional" life.

I was also in no hurry to get into a serious relationship after my divorce. I was terrified of repeating my mistakes. Nevertheless, months later I stumbled into one that lasted 7 ½ years.

He was significantly older and wasn't interested in marriage or children, and we were focused on our careers. We expected little of each other aside from fidelity. We took trips, drank nice wine, and stayed out late. Without the expectations or duties of a shared mortgage or a family, we simply enjoyed our time together. When we were apart, we did our own things. Those were great, easy years.

It was an incredibly healing relationship, and, ironically, I started to become the woman my ex-husband had wanted. I enjoyed cooking, cleaning, and caring for someone when it was my choice and when it wasn't asked of me. I'd been so preoccupied with preserving my independence and caring for myself that I hadn't realized how much I could enjoy caring for someone else and allowing them to care for me.

I changed my mind about wanting to build a family with someone

I started to think I might want more than an easy, aimless relationship. I realized I might actually want to build a life from the ground up with someone who wanted the same thing. And while I knew that might take more work, it also felt like the type of connection worth pursuing.

I felt restless, and I couldn't ignore that what I wanted had changed. Though we were technically together, we were living our own lives. That was exactly what I had wanted and needed after my divorce, but autonomy was no longer my top priority. It felt like the relationship had run its course. He's a wonderful man, and we're still close, but we'd entered our relationship without intention or a shared vision of our future.

We broke up shortly before my 37th birthday. Over the following year and a half I dated around for the first time in my life. I broke hearts, had my own heart broken, and did in my late 30s what many people do in their 20s. I didn't know it then, but I was learning what I wanted and needed in a relationship. Ultimately, I want to build a life with another person, not simply join theirs when it's convenient.

I began to feel an incredible urgency to find the relationship and stability to see me through the second half of my life. To my amazement, I began seriously thinking about marriage and children — I hardly recognized myself.

I also began to feel selfish for spending so much time focusing solely on myself. I went from proudly proclaiming I was too self-centered to be bothered with a family to realizing there was more to life than independence and the pleasures of living for oneself. My very existence started to feel shallow and hollow.

I worry I'll end up alone, but I'm still hopeful

Now, months after that realization and at nearly 39, I feel panicked thinking I'll be a single, childless middle-aged woman. I worry that my youthful looks will fade and that I won't be able to attract the man I want to spend the rest of my life with.

If I sound desperate, it's because I honestly do feel a little desperate. At my age, I know that creating life may not be an option for me. And I worry that men who want a family aren't looking for a woman pushing 40. I get it; I'm no longer the ideal candidate for motherhood , and it's a scary truth. But I still hope to find someone who thinks I'm the ideal partner and create our family together.

I understand the appeal of life without the constraints of marriage or children; for many years I was quite satisfied living that way. I know people can live happy, purpose-driven lives without those things. I just don't believe I'm one of those people anymore. I know now that my purpose lies in having a husband and a family. I'm meant to care for more than myself.

I'm looking for my forever person and hoping he's looking for me, too.

A room of a bathhouse with white walls, blue tile fixtures, a domed roof, white porcelain sinks and star-shaped openings that are allowing light into the room.

After Five Centuries, Stars Rise in Istanbul

This article is part of our Design special section about water as a source of creativity.

On May 3, Zeyrek Cinili Hamam , a 500-year-old public bathhouse, reopened in Istanbul after a 13-year, $15-million-plus restoration. Named for its original cobalt-and-turquoise cladding (cinili is the Turkish word for “tiled”), the hamam is the jewel of the Zeyrek district, a historic neighborhood in Istanbul that is now a UNESCO World Heritage site.

Visitors can enjoy a traditional Turkish bath under soaring domes pierced with star-shaped skylights that send shimmering rays into the rooms. A typical hourlong bath costs 95 euros (about $101) and includes an exfoliation scrub and a massage accompanied by the soothing sound of water splashing into marble basins.

Just as in Ottoman times, anyone who can afford the entrance fee is welcome, regardless of faith, class or profession.

Restoring the bathhouse, which was built from 1530 to 1540, was Bike Gursel’s self-described obsession. Fourteen years ago, as a board member of the Marmara Group, a privately held real estate investment firm, Ms. Gursel decided a classical Turkish hamam was just the thing to diversify the company’s offerings.

“I was looking to buy a hamam for a long time, and when I couldn’t find one, I began collecting hamam artifacts such as embroidered towels and mother-of-pearl inlaid clogs made for the bath,” she recalled. “I was already thinking about a museum.”

In 2010, at Ms. Gursel’s urging, the Marmara Group bought the Zeyrek Cinili Hamam even though it was a near ruin. “The architect said it would take three years to restore,” she recalled. “Not 13.”

The restoration specialists KA-BA Architecture in Ankara, Turkey, supervised the project and its team of archaeologists, engineers, scholars and artisans. The long and complicated process began with a survey of the bathhouse, which had been badly damaged over the centuries by earthquakes, fires and neglect.

The 30,000-square-foot building was completely unstable.

An unrestored, dimly lit, cavelike circular room of stone.

“We had to excavate 36 feet down to find solid ground,” said Cengiz Kabaoglu, KA-BA Architecture ’s founder. A subterranean structure of steel and concrete was built to reinforce the compound. This allowed the builders to repair the roof and walls, install gas furnaces to replace the former wood-burning ones, replace the wood beams and tie the domes with ribbons of steel.

Antiques surfaced during the excavations: ancient coins, fifth-century Roman glass bottles, Byzantine oil lamps, terra-cotta vessels and tile fragments. They are on view in a new museum next to the bathhouse.

What didn’t turn up were the resplendent 16th-century Iznik tiles that once covered the walls. Ms. Gursel learned that, in the 1870s, an Ottoman antiques dealer took possession of the tiles and spirited them off to Paris. Some ended up in the Louvre. Others in the Victoria and Albert Museum in London. Others in the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. All were reassembled virtually in a display at the hamam’s museum.

Now the hamam walls are covered in pale gray Marmara marble. The rooms are minimal, elegant and serene. On the rebuilt exterior, the roofs have been resurfaced in lead, with handblown glass “elephant-eye” hats protecting the skylights. A roof terrace offers views of the magnificent domes.

When Ms. Gursel retired in 2021, she passed her Marmara Group board seat and restoration responsibilities to her daughter, Koza Gureli Yazgan, a business school graduate.

Mrs. Gureli Yazgan described the restoration project as thrilling, but not easy. “We value cultural preservation, but this project was like opening a Pandora’s box,” she said. “Every discovery led to a delay. At one point the board said, ‘Stop digging.’ But we couldn’t. It was the story that kept us going.”

The hamam’s original patron was Hayreddin Barbarossa, the grand admiral of the Ottoman Empire who was also known by the Italian translation of his name: Redbeard. Born on the island of Lesbos in the late 1400s, Barbarossa was part of a family of pirates who roamed the Mediterranean at the time of Spain’s conquest of Grenada. As privateers, they ferried Muslim immigrants forced to leave Spain to North Africa, captured Rhodes and Tunis, attacked the Spanish, French, Italian and Portuguese fleets, and briefly conquered Algiers in 1516.

Barbarossa’s successful naval campaigns attracted the attention of Sultan Suleyman the Magnificent, who appointed him his grand admiral in 1534.

Before Barbarossa died in 1546, he commissioned the bathhouse from Mimar Sinan, a former slave who became the chief imperial architect of the Ottoman Empire at the height of its political and cultural power in 1538.

The bathhouse is a rare “double hamam” with separate areas for men and women.

“In addition to the functions of physical and spiritual purification and cleansing, hamams also provided their frequenters with the opportunity to socialize, keep up with daily events, gossip and celebrate many milestones of life together,” writes Leyla Kayhan Elbirlik, a visiting scholar at Harvard University, in a new book on the bathhouse restoration, “Barbarossa’s Cinili Hamam: A Masterpiece by Sinan.” Those milestones included circumcision baths for boys, premarriage baths for men and women and postnatal baths for mothers and their newborns.

The bathhouse was also notable for its address — the “Fifth Avenue” of an affluent Ottoman neighborhood, home to palace officials and military commanders. Barbarossa presumably picked the spot because it overlooked the Bosporus, allowing him to view the sultan’s shipyards he supervised on the opposite shore.

Now, 500 years later, the Zeyrek Cinili Hamam may again be the anchor of a fashionable area. Across the street, a large new hotel is under construction.

Enduring the voyage of the tatau.

  • Share Story

After 33 years abroad, Loveni Enari recently returned to Aotearoa and Samoa in what a friend joked was an “existential crisis”. He learnt and re-learnt so much about his family, friends and both countries. Almost as an afterthought, he got a Samoan tatau. This is his story.

(Accompanying it are the verses of the Samoan tatau song.)

W hen the koso, the skin-spreader, slapped me hard on the chest and stood up, I realised it was finished. I had known the end was near but it surprised me when it happened. I was told to sit up and struggled to do so. My tufuga – tattooist – put out his arm and we hugged clumsily. He wiped away a tear and I realised how stressed he had been.

I turned to look at my aiga, my family, all faithfully sitting there, looking at me in expectation; it seemed they had morphed into one huge smile. I channelled my inner father and disappointed them with an, “It ain’t no thing,” chill coolness, just to be contrary.

My puke, my belly button, had just been ka’d, been hit, and with that last act, my pe’a, my tatau, my malofie, my traditional Samoan tattoo, had been completed. I was exhausted.

O le mafuaʻaga lenei ua iloa – this is the reason that’s known

O le ta ina o le tatau i Sāmoa – of why tatau are done in Samoa

O le malaga a teine e toalua – it was from the journey of two girls

Na feʻausi mai i Fiti i le vasaloloa – who swam from Fiji in the great moana

But I’m getting ahead of myself. The beginning.

You could say it started with a kiss – never thought that it’d come to this – in 2022 at the Sweatshop nightclub in Auckland. It was crowded and I wanted to get closer to this interesting, attractive woman but I wasn’t sure how, so I threw my scarf over her head, dived under it, and kissed her.

I’d like to say it was Lenny Kravitz-cool, but it wasn’t. It was the sort of move that may have been cool when you were a teen or in your early 20s. I was 57 at the time.

Later she showed me her malu – the traditional, Samoan tattoo for women. She had distracted me with it all night out of the corner of my eye. On her legs, I thought it one of the most beautiful things I had ever seen – so artistic, so sparing, yet so teasingly complete.

my family ka essay

For the first time, it occurred to me that one day I might get my own tatau, my own notoriously painful, traditional, Samoan tattoo. Now at least I recognised the artistry involved, and was intrigued.

“Why dirty your legs,” my father used to say, mockingly, when asked about the tatau.

When my brother Fatu went to get his, he told our father. “We don’t do that,” replied Dad.

“We” meaning people/family like us: those descended from faifeau, pastors, missionaries. The colonised, religious types who did not believe in the unnecessary spilling of blood. There was also a snobbishness. “We” were scholarly, academic types who did not partake of “pagan practices”, as tattooing was labelled by the first missionaries in 1830. It was uncivilised and anti-religious.

As such, the traditions were killed off in Fiji and Tonga, but not in Samoa where people clandestinely continued the practice. Indeed, as late as the 1950s, soga’imiti, or men with tatau, sometimes danced naked at ceremonies, as they were deemed “already clothed” in the traditional clothes of the tatau. Can you imagine anything more pagan than that? Dancing naked in front of everyone. It was no wonder my scholarly father felt he and “his people” were firmly in the “no” camp.

Na la aumai ai o le ato au – they brought the basket of tattooing tools

Ma si a la pese e tutumau – and their song which lasts to this day

Fai mai e tata o fafine – they said women were tattooed

ʻAe le tata o tane – but not men

my family ka essay

But not all of our aiga were with him. His aunty Nu’uausala, more religious than the Pope, strict leader of the Sunday School, the oldest soprano in the church choir, she had a malu. But she hid it.

“What about Nu’uausala?” Fatu had asked.

“How do you know about that?” replied my father, accusingly, as if someone had spilt the beans.

We knew because as she curled pandanus leaves with her short knife, during endless mat-weaving sessions, you would catch a glimpse of the fusi, the “belt” of the malu, just below her lavalava, at her knees. Just another never-discussed, family secret.

Then there was our Safune family, the rough and tough ones, on Samoa’s big island, Savai’i. My great uncle Lamese was the family patriarch and four of his sons had the tatau. There was no doubt where they stood on the issue – firmly with the pagans – and the naked, probably drunk, dancing.

O oe o le pele o Lamese. You are Lamese’s favourite. It was well known when I was a child.

He was a huge man. Six foot four, immense with a large, straight back. It is said his initials were tattooed onto the head of his penis. That’s how he rolled. He was funny, crazy, often violent, and I loved him to bits.

When we were children and it was time to leave Safune, this fearsome man would stand roadside to flag down the bus to the wharf in Salelologa, normally a chore for the youngest child. When the bus driver and passengers saw Lamese hailing the bus, they knew it was no trivial matter.

While they waited, he would look at us lovingly out of his always blood-shot eyes, hug each one close, and say, “O fa’alelei,” – “Go well,” – put us on the bus and peer carefully at the driver, “Vaai faalelei si a’u fagau e momoli lelei i le uafu faamolemole,” – “Please be careful as you take my children to the wharf,” – in his humblest, most polite manner. For him to lower his voice like this, instead of his usual booming self, would set alarm bells off. Be very, very careful or there would be consequences, was the message.

My beloved grandmother, Saoa’i, Lamese’s sister, was the other reason behind my tattoo. She died in a bus accident when I was seven years old. Those seven years with her were enough for me to realise that, like Lamese, she loved me profoundly, unconditionally.

When I visited her home in Nofoali’i, two holes would be punctured in a can of condensed milk, allowing a smoother flow into my mouth, and I had the run of the house and shop.

I would scramble over the shop shelves gathering lollies while her son, my uncle, would call out, “Saoa’i, Loveni is taking the sweets from the shop.”

“A’e, ku’u le kama,” she would call out in an exasperated tone. “A’e, leave the boy alone,” as if her son were stupid.

I could do no wrong in her and Lamese’s eyes.

my family ka essay

Like her brother, my grandmother was notoriously tough and her strength legendary. Once, upon being awoken by a moe tolo, a sleep-crawler or pervert, she knocked him out cold with one uppercut.

How could I not love people like this with such huge, physical prowess, who melted into soft, warm fuzziness when confronted by me?

A o le ala na tata ai o tane – how men came to be tattooed

I na ua sese si a la pese – is when the women made a mistake with their song

Taunuʻu i gatai o Falealupo – they arrived beachside in Falealupo

ʻUa vaʻaia loa o le fai sua ua tele – and they saw a giant clam, which was huge

What do they have to do with my tatau? Well, these are the two people that came to mind when I tried to answer the question, “What is my why?” and, “Is my why strong enough to withstand the pain and avoid the shame of a pe’a muku (an unfinished one)?”

The previous week, while swimming in Savai’i, these huge personalities of my childhood had filled my mind, and an epiphany about the power of their love overcame me. Their spoiling of me had such an empowering effect on my personality. It instilled in me, who had accomplished nothing in life, a totally undeserved, bullet-proof confidence in myself. I didn’t need to do anything, it seemed, simply turn up, and love and praise would be showered upon me.

I felt the need to repay these two gruff, loving people, and the best way was to get a tatau, endure something painful, so tough that some don’t finish it. Show them, make them proud that I also could be tough like them.

So although it all started with one, gentle kiss in Auckland, that alone was not going to be enough to see me to the end of what everyone insisted is an intensely painful experience.

my family ka essay

Would these two giants of my childhood be enough to see me through the pain, to be able to say, “keep tapping away at my body tufuga-man, dish out your punishment, I’ll drink it all up, as I have a higher calling, a spiritual escape clause, a safe place in the clouds of angels, where you can’t touch me, way above your mere, human tools of iron pain”? They were the why that gave it to me.

My Saoa’i, my Lamese – that should be enough – at least that’s what I thought.

So two days before I was due to leave the country, I informed my cousin Mailo, thinking it was too late at such short notice.

It was Sunday, but he made a call which lasted less than ten minutes and on payment of 500 tala on Monday I would be booked in to start on Tuesday at 9am.

Oh shit. What have I done? I thought.

“Have you asked for your family’s blessings?” asked Mailo.

Oh shit, again. I quickly informed them I was going to have a tatau starting in the next two days.

Two nights later, on the eve of the start, only my brothers had replied. I had parted on uncertain terms with my mother and she wasn’t replying.

A panic set in. I would be cursed, malaia in Samoan folklore, if she did not give me her blessing. Without her blessing, I feared I would not withstand the pain and would end up with a pe’a muku, a broken, unfinished tatau, a stain on my family pride forever more. I wrote to her again.

Late on the eve of the start, her message finally came. My sigh of relief was huge.

Sorted. Bring it on. Nothing can go wrong now. Nek minit? Cue emoji of rolling eyes.

B efore heading to bed I took a lavalava off the line and boom, an intense pain in my finger. It was immediately red, swollen and a half centimetre thing was stuck in my finger. No problem, I thought, pulled it out, went to bed and promptly fell asleep. An hour later I awoke, knew something was wrong, felt my pulse and boom, again, an arrhythmia, an irregular heart beat.

Two years previously I’d had minor heart surgery to correct it, but now and then, I would have an episode. No worries, I thought, I had my antiarrhythmic pills and, uh-oh, my blood-thinner pills – which I couldn’t take. Its anticoagulant properties meant I would bleed out at the first tap of the needle tomorrow morning.

Totofu loa lea o fafine – together, the women decided

Ma ua sui ai si a la pese – and their song was changed

Faimai e tata o tane – it said, men are tattooed

ʻAe le tata o fafine – but not women

I went to sleep again and awoke early in a panic.

The heartbeat was fine, but my brain was racing.

What idiot says yes to a tatau without considering his medical situation? I was supposed to take my pills daily, but did so only if I had an episode. Now, what would happen if I got an arrhythmia each time the tufuga’s au struck? I would not be able to take the blood-thinner and therefore ran a serious risk of a blood clot.

A blood clot to the brain – a stroke. To the heart – a heart attack.

Again, what idiot says yes to a tatau without taking his medical history into account?

Only this bloody idiot.

my family ka essay

There’s nothing for it, I thought. The intelligent thing to do is to contact the tufuga, tell him to keep the deposit but, sorry very much, I cannot go through with the process as the risk is too high. Sorry, but I hadn’t considered my heart problem. Of course everyone would understand that was the only intelligent option, I thought.

And then it struck me how it would play out among my relatives, friends and other bystanders to the car-crash that was unfolding.

“Did you hear about Loveni? He woke up in a panic on his first day of tattooing, rang the tattooist and chickened out! Hahahah!”

“He cancelled at the last minute. Hahaha, what a useless, pala’ai (scared) guy!”

I anticipated the laughter echoing over the social media airwaves as the story gathered strength and I knew perfectly well nobody would believe my side of the story.

Fuck , I thought. I can’t pull out now. This story will forever be associated with my name and my aiga. What an embarrassment! There was nothing for it. I had to go through with it. At least there’s something epic sounding about it. You know, “Hear about Loveni? Got a tattoo, had a blood clot, caused a heart attack and he died. Ha!”

As my dramatic cousin later said, “When you have a tattoo, you have to be prepared to die.” Well I was very literally prepared and resigned to that possibility – anything better than the shame of being labelled a coward.

As the saying goes, “E motu le ula, motu le fau, ae o le tatau, e te alu ma oe i le tu’ugamau.” – “The garland is broken and so is the fau (bark for binding, lashing) but the tatau, it will go with you to the grave.”

Silasila i si tama ua taʻatia – look at the boy lying there

O le tufuga lea ua amatalia – the tufuga has started

Talofa e ua tagi aue aue – poor thing, he’s crying, aue aue

Ua otiʻoti solo o le ʻautapulu tele – the sharp pain of the dark shading (of the tattoo) is huge

So bright and early Tuesday morning, I presented myself at the tufuga’s fale in Alafua.

If you’re going to have a tattoo, take it from me. Do a lot of yoga stretching beforehand. The pain from old rugby injuries and the impossible position my neck was forced into, with my cheek flat on the floor and a hard pillow pushing into my sternum, was nearly as bad as the pain of the au – the iron needles. It was very real.

But so was my constant imagery of adoring Saoa’i, stern Lamese, and her graceful hands and Samoan siva. They easily pulled me through on that first day, which finished too early for my liking. It was the va’a, the boat, on my back. I felt strong and wanted to continue but did not tell the tufuga as I was aware of his quick temper and did not want to annoy him.

The power of the au was in his hands and I had heard the stories of past clients suffering the consequences as the tattooist would raise his hands higher than usual before smashing the au into your skin.

On the second day, my tears flowed quietly when my cousin Tauiai from Saleapaga arrived to support me. I remembered how much he and his sister, Fetaia’i, had loved and looked after my brothers and I when we were children in Vaiala.

Another cry happened at 4am one morning, as I realised the whole process was also an offering to my departed father. Despite being against tattooing, I knew he would have attended at least one session, and it would have been enough to win him over. He would have been so proud to see me doing something he would never have attempted.

There were more emotional moments. When my long-time friend, brother in arms and current minister of police, Lefau Harry Schuster, turned up, I cried again. He’s always had my back. He took a few hours out of his busy schedule to shoot the breeze, joking in his usual charming way, and afterwards, before leaving, he gave the tufuga money. It was his way of honouring our friendship but, more intelligently, ensuring the tufuga treated me well. Make him happy and he’ll be gentle with me. His logic worked as the tufuga never jabbed me in the stomach again with the au as he had three times that day.

“Relax your body,” he had snapped at me. That was especially hard, not just because of the contortionist positions, but because each time tattooing was about to be renewed after the brief pause to re-ink, one of his koso (skin-spreaders), who was not tattooed, would roughly dump his hands on recently tattooed parts, causing my body to jump.

The other koso, who did have a tatau, was always gentle as he stretched my skin. The rough, untattooed one was the one who joked, after the first session, “You watch this one,” referring to me, “He won’t last three days. He’ll throw in the towel in less than two.”

The next two days were the same, in that I felt strong and willing to take on more. On Friday, the fourth day, Señor Tufuga smashed my first hip and I whispered to myself, “Thank you very much,” when he indicated we were done.

Later, when sharing lunch paid for everyday by my cousin Helen Tuilagi with the tufuga and his family, he acknowledged my uncle Fa’alafitele Falefatu and offered him money from Le Fau’s visit.

My uncle, a constant, loving presence from the very first day, had plenty to spend the money on. He spoke quietly before returning it. Later, I thought, my opinion of you would not have suffered if you’d taken the money Uncle, but now you’ve rejected it, my opinion has risen.

It was him concentrating on doing the right thing for me and I felt it and appreciated it.

Every day after each session, I would head home to our boiling hot house and shower with one of my male “nephews” at least three times a day. One of them, Sefa, or my namesake, Loveni, each with powerful thumbs and fingers, was in the shower with me to massage and squeeze the liquid out of the tattoo.

The pain was very different to the sharpness of the au, but I saw stars there as well.

Sole, sole ia e loto tele – boy, boy, be brave

O le taʻaloga faʻatama tane – it’s a real man’s game

E ui lava ina tiga tele – though it may be very painful

Ae mulimuli ane ua e fefete – later you will be swollen with pride

Then I’d eat and be knocked out. Tattoo, shower, massage, eat, rest and repeat, again and again and again. For nine sessions. The first eight were about four hours each, sometimes a little less, sometimes a little more. The last session was over eight hours long, and I was exhausted by the end of it. At least, that’s what the photos afterwards showed.

I had done it. “The first courageous decision you’ve taken in your life,” said one friend, which made me smile. As I said at the beginning, I wasn’t about to get all emotional about it, like many people apparently do. I wanted to keep it low-key. It ain’t no thang.

“Did you not feel like chususu-ing,” asked one. “Didn’t you cry? I did,” exclaimed another.

“How did you feel when they were completing your puke, your belly button, and that pillow is in the small of your back and your arms spread out like you’re crucified on the cross?” asked another.

On that last day, I’d had some food in between the two sessions. In that position at the end, when you’re supposed to be swelling your stomach to help spread the skin, the dominant feeling was that of my brekky being regurgitated into my mouth.

Mystical? Spiritual? Romantic? Eureka moment?

Ahem, leai fa’afetai. (No, thank you.) It was just OK, I’ve done it now. I was getting bored with all the different methods, memories, photographs I kept having to drag up to take my mind off the pain. I had run out of ideas and I was thankful. But I wasn’t about to do cartwheels.

Yes, I did have all the intense emotions people mentioned, but they came later.

O atunuʻu uma o le Pasefika – of all the countries in the Pacific

Ua sili Sāmoa le taʻutaʻua – Samoa is the most famous

ʻO le sogaimiti ua savalivali mai – a soga’imiti is walking towards us

Ua feʻilafi mai o na faʻaʻila – he’s glistening and shining

Before starting the whole business, I remembered feeling happy I would be joining a special club of people, some of whom were very dear to me. There was also the motivating thought of, If he can do it, I’ll have no problem.

Some people said that sometimes they felt no pain, or at other times they were willing the tattooist to hit them. I thought that a load of mumbo-jumbo myself, but in the end it rang true for me too.

Once, I got lost in a world of photos on my phone, one after the other after the other, and I felt my tufuga glancing over at me, wondering if I was asleep, so relaxed was I. Then, in the last few days, I resorted to one of my best pain-avoiding thoughts. It was a repetitive thank you, again and again, with each tap of the au, each perforation of my skin, willing him on with the knowledge that each hit was one less that I would have to endure on my journey to the completion.

I said to myself, “Fa’afetai fa’afetai, ua fia atoatoa lo’u tino, fa’afetai mo le fa’aatoatoa o lo’u tino, ua toeitiiti atoa lo’u tino, fa’afetai, fa’afetai…” – “Thank you, thank you, my body wants to be complete, thank you for making my body complete, my body is nearly complete, thank you, thank you…” over and again, like a mantra in meditation.

And that, baby, is that. Uma lava pisupo. My body is complete. I am fully clothed now in the true, traditional sense of the phrase.

Before arriving in Samoa, my mother and I were not on the best of terms. After the tatau, any ill-feeling I had harboured towards her vanished. All gone. The tufuga had “ka’d” – smashed it – out of me. I felt totally cleansed and ready to restart a healthy relationship with her.

This has been a journey of love, especially for my cousin Mailo Fa’afetai, his wife Helen, and their loving children, but for many others of my aiga and close friends as well. That friend sent me a definition of a Samoan’s fa’asinomaga on the third day of my tatau. It was her mother’s, and spoke of a Samoan having roots like a tree. Each time these roots encountered other roots, a “va” – a space – was created between the two. How well that va is developed in our lives is basically our fa’asinomaga, based on our ancestors, our language and the different lands we are anchored to in Samoa. How well those roots are watered and the va cared for, is down to us as “good” Samoans.

As they say, you may not receive the blessings or fruits of that nourishment of the va, but your children or grandchildren will. I know this is so true of my own experiences in life, as I have been embraced, protected and loved all over the world by Samoans in a way which is so unique and so touching. This tatau has been a journey of my fa’asinomaga.

How I manifest this new spirit and attitude remains to be seen, but I am changed.

When people ask me if this is a rite of passage from boy to man, I say somehow it is, but not in the macho-man sense. Yes, the pain is real, but the voyage, and I intentionally put it on the sea with its troughs and crests of rolling waves, is more emotional and spiritual than physical.

More Reading

I remember as a youngster, hearing stories of Samoans from New Zealand getting the tatau because it brought them closer to home; made them feel more Samoan. I looked down on those people for needing proof, and thought I would never have to “prove” I was Samoan.

I still feel the same, but there’s no denying it. After 33 years of living away from the Pacific – and my Samoan language, once so fluent as a youngster, now not nearly as strong – the realisation that, if I’m walking along some beach in Europe and a fellow Samoan sees me, there will be no doubt in their mind that it is a Samoan man they are looking at. And yes, a Samoan man who has endured the voyage of the tatau.
