Preparing for the MD-101 Managing Modern Desktops Exam (BETA)
Please check the latest version of this guide at https://intunedin.net/2020/08/31/preparing-for-the-md-101-managing-modern-desktops-exam-august-2020-update/
In the previous post I put together some of the resources for the MD-100 Windows 10 (Beta) exam , which means that it’s logical to cover the MD-101 exam today. If you have already started researching what’s required for this exam you’ve probably already noticed that looks like a more up to date version of Exam 70-697: Configuring Windows Devices , as well as including updated content that might have been part of Exam 70-398: Planning for and Managing Devices in the Enterprise.
It’s been over three years since I sat both 70-697 and 70-398, so I’m not in a good position to compare what I thought of those exams in comparison to MD-101, except to say that the new exam feels more relevant to me, in terms of things that are included, as well as those that aren’t included. That doesn’t mean that the exam only covers things I personally care about, that’s not what I would expect. I always thought that 70-398 was a bit of a weird exam, especially considering that it was referred to as the EMS exam during development, but it had some core Windows 10 domain objectives as well, which made it strange for people not approaching the exam with Windows support technician type skills.
If you’re anything like me, preparation for the MD-100 exam was a great deal of revisiting topics that you’ve been looking at over the years, and a good reminder of some of the core functionality that Windows includes that may not really think about on a day to day basis. With MD-101, it was a bit different in that it was making sure that any of the changes in technologies I do work with on a more regular basis had major changes added that I wasn’t aware of, which is pretty easy these days. That’s one of the reasons why I prefer to use docs.microsoft.com while preparing to make sure I’m not just preparing for the exam, but also expanding knowledge that could be immediately beneficial.

Excellent outilne – Thanks! You were scheduled to take the test on the 7th, any updates you would recommend to the MD-101 outline?
Hi Dano – not at this stage,, I made a couple of small adjustments already when I found some better matches, but I’ll do some bigger changes in a few weeks once the exam goes live and we potentially see some wording changes in the exam page.
Thanks Mark, I am scheduled for January 15th so we shall see how it goes.
do you know about exam test? how many time for prepering?
HI Frederic – The preparation time will depend on how much experience you have with the technologies.
not so much. I got the 70-698 in the last december, and I would like to complete the mcsa, but I’m not sure to complete the study of 70-697 before to 31.03.2019.
Why Microsoft has removed 70-697 exam?
I read something about MD-101 exam and I understood that is different than 70-697.
What you raccomend? do I make a full-immersion for 70-697 exam or do you raccomendo to take MS-101 Exam?
One of the problems with keeping older exams alive is that the product skills and focus change over time, and the 70-697 exam was released over 3 years ago. Sometimes it’s better to do a reset with a new exam, new objectives and new expectations because some of the concepts and technologies in the old exam don’t apply any more.
There’s no harm in doing the retiring exams, but I would be more focused on the newer certifications because they will be valid for longer and cover more current technologies. If you are already partway down the path of achieving another certification that you want, it’s not bad to get it before it becomes unavailable.
Oh Hi Mark!,
Great guide, love it. One question, on the ‘Plan and implement Windows 10 by using dynamic deployment > Pilot Deployment’ I don’t get the link you suggest, could you explain it some more?
Hi Niklas – Towards the bottom of the page there is the Windows 10 deployment and proof of concept section with a couple of different deployment options.
Good work. It helped me much. Instead of searching on google I’ve gotten all the info I need in one place.
Can anyone recommend some good practice tests?
Hi Mark! I just wanted to thank you very much for this study guide! I used it to pass MD-101 (which I just took today for the first and only time).
I had wanted to wait until the Exam Ref MD-101 book had come out, but it doesn’t come out until August. And as someone who very recently took both 70-697 and 70-698 to get the MCSA: Windows 10, I didn’t want to also have to take MD-100 (as the ability to get the Microsoft 365 Certified Modern Desktop Administrator certification using 70-698 in place of MD-100 expires on July 31st).
Doing this without your guide would’ve been very tricky. Thanks again, man! If ever you’re near the Los Angeles area, beers are on me!
Congratulations Max! It’s been a few years since I did 697 and 698, the questions still included the Silverlight console, with some of the questions still focused on the PC agent instead of being pure MDM. I think it was a smart idea to get MD-101 done earlier, I think it’s a better strategy to try to get related exams done closer together if you can. I don’t think it’s the base knowledge as much for me, it’s the mental switch I have to make to go into exam preparation mode that can take some effort, but once it’s enabled I’m good to go.
Was really hoping to complete MCSE Mobility. I bit the bullet and failed it hard so I could go back with a bit more confidence to study. However, my prep for it fell off my radar. Now it looks like this exam is for another track. Not sure how I feel about that, but I just found out tonight and hope to get MD-101 beofre the cut off so I can plan my next move later. My company does VERY limited windows support, so I am wondering if I should even move forward on the next step after this. May wait for exam preps to come out for MS-100 and 101 before I dive into it.
I was trying to get sign off on doing a program/training with MS-100 and MD-101 being the focus exams, because the customer types weren’t really going down the DLP/compliance path just yet (thus no MS-101), and it needed to be non traditional Windows skills (hence no MD-100). Out of curiosity, is your company’s focus more MDM for devices, or devices in general just aren’t a big part of it?
Hi! These might be interesting (free) courses to others who are preparing for this exam:
https://openedx.microsoft.com/courses/course-v1:Microsoft+MD-101.1+2019_T1/about https://openedx.microsoft.com/courses/course-v1:Microsoft+MD-101.2+2019_T1/about https://openedx.microsoft.com/courses/course-v1:Microsoft+MD-101.3+2019_T1/about
Unfortunately, I can’t find any official/viable practice tests to measure my progress.
Hello again!
One more really handy resource for preparing, a complete lab kit and some exercises along with it: https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/microsoft-365/enterprise/modern-desktop-deployment-and-management-lab
Looks extremely helpful. Thanks for this Mark. Wondering if I need to have completed any other exams before MD-100? I am a fresh (1 year large enterprise experience) CS graduate. Getting into a new role that requires MD-100/101 certs.
Any tips on how to prepare and approach these exams as a fresh graduate?

Wanted to just leave a note to let you know that I’m having issues with a couple of links in this document. I have at this point tested all of them an found the following three that seem to now be involved. “Configure Windows Information Protection Settings” “Switch Configuration Manger Workloads to Intune” “Co-management for Windows 10 Devices”
I appreciate your leg work greatly. I was able to pass my MD-100 using your guide for it and will soon be challenging this exam. I didn’t purchase the Exam Ref for the MD-100 but chose to for MD-101 because there was a lot more information that was new to me in the MD-101 exam. I’m finding that this guide with the docs links is actually more helpful to me than the Exam Ref is though.
Thanks Al. I’ll get them updated later today.

Exam MD-101: Managing Modern Desktops study guide and exam prep
![md 101 case study](https://iamitgeek.files.wordpress.com/2019/08/modern-desktop.png?w=225)
Salaam, Namaste, Ola and Hello!
Back in August I blogged about the MD-100 exam, the resources I used and how I prepared for this ( https://iamitgeek.com/2019/08/28/md-100-modern-desktop-associate-study-guide-exam-prep/ ).
Last week I was successful in completing the second part of this certification, the MD-101 exam on Managing Modern Desktop and in this blog I will detail my journey, including:
- Study Resources
- Topics you need to cover
For those who are not aware, the MD-101 is the second certification required for the ‘Modern Desktop Associate Administrator’ and focuses on Windows 10 deployment and management using services such as Azure Intune and SCCM (System Center Configuration Manager).
STUDY RESOURCES: To start my learning for this exam with the content on Pluralsight ( https://www.pluralsight.com/ ). There are some great videos on here which gave me a good starting platform for my preparation. The main course series you will need to watch is “Microsoft Modern Desktop Administrator: Managing Microsoft Desktops (MD-101)” by Glenn Weadock. The course is 5 videos totaling up to 8 hours altogether which have the following headings:
- Introduction to Microsoft Modern Desktop Administrator MD-100 and MD-101 Exams
- Managing Microsoft Desktops: Deploying and Updating Operating Systems
- Managing Microsoft Desktops: Policies and Profiles
- Managing Microsoft Desktops: Managing and Protecting Devices
- Managing Microsoft Desktops: Apps and Data
All the content is video based and I, like others I am sure needs more than just this to take in content. What i found worked really well for me was watching a video and then doing some practical content around that subject.
For example I would watch the video on ‘Managing Microsoft Desktops: Policies and Profiles’ and then login to my test Office 365 subscription and put what I just watched into practice by configuring policies and profiles, then deploying them to my test Windows 10 VMs.
I found the content was going in much better this way and I was ‘Learning by doing’ rather than watching and half of the information being forgotten.
![md 101 case study](https://iamitgeek.files.wordpress.com/2020/02/the-3-secrets-of-highly-successful-graduates-78-638.jpg?w=638)
The final resource I used for my preparation was the Microsoft OpenEDX learning resource ( https://openedx.microsoft.com ). I cannot speak highly enough about this resource as it blends written content with practical and test quiz questions which helps you test the skills you have learnt over the course. For the MD-101 it is split into three course:
- MD-101.1: Deploying the Modern Desktop
- MD-101.2: Managing Modern Desktops & Devices
- MD-101.3: Protecting Modern Desktop & Devices
Each course has a great mixture of written, video, practical labs and a quiz at the end which I found to be a great blend for a learning resource.
TOPICS YOU NEED TO COVER: For a detail look at the skills that are measured in this exam I recommend reading https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/learn/certifications/exams/md-101 which breaks down in detail each of the following sections:
- Deploying and updating operating systems (15-20%)
- Manage Policies and Profiles (35-40%)
- Manage and protect devices (15-20%)
- Manage Apps and data (25-30%)
EXAM TIPS: In my blog on the MD-100 I explained the over arching format with the standard multiple choice questions, scenario based questions and use case section which consisted of 7 questions. As with the MD-100 there was no lab in the MD-101 either, however I would recommend preparing as if there is a lab section just in case Microsoft decide to change it up.
The exam was 42 questions in total with the big use case to start (7 questions in total). Now I have done a few of the new format exams, I have actually found a great way to tackle these types of questions. What I found was that their is a lot of information to take in with these use cases and it can take up to 5 minutes plus to read through everything. What I did with both the MD-100 and MD-101 exams was is that I did not read the use case to begin with, and instead read the question first and then referred to the specific part of the use case I needed to read to be able to best answer the question.
I found this way of tackling the question saved a lot of time but also didn’t clog up my mind with a lot of information i didn’t need for the questions. As I mentioned there were 7 questions in this section, so I only needed 7 bits of information! Please note this is just my own experience with the exams in this format and it might not work for you.
Hope you find this helpful, if you would like any more information feel free to tweet me @shabazdarr or ask a question in the comments section below! I am planning on doing the AZ-500 exam next so will follow that up with another post!

MD-101 Study Guide – Part 4
So, it’s Part 4 of my MD-101 quest, and we are going to look at Managing Apps & Data! Whoop whoop, I can hear you all say 🙂
Microsoft seem to be adding lots of ‘Case Study’ type questions (and with ADHD) these can present a bit of a challenge for those like me, who cannot remember the case study information and the ‘bloomin’ question. But I digress, on to the learning bit!
Anyways, I think that if you study the following ideas or scenarios for MD-101, you should be good to go on the day (no guarantees mind!)
Device management requirements – Azure AD. An example of this would be; ‘What do I need to stop a department sending confidential bank information to an external partner?’ – That could be an Azure Information Protection policy
If I wanted to stop data transferring from one application to another – that might be an ‘App Protection Policy.’
If I wanted to use an application from the Microsoft Store for Business, what would I have to do, what steps would I follow? – I would start by obtaining the software, after all, if I don’t have the app, how can I deploy to my users?
I would ‘get’ the app. It’s pretty simple if you think about it logically.
- If I wanted to deploy software to my users and I had ConfigMgr in my Domain (r emember that Modern Management is all about using the correct tool for the job in hand), and I am only deploying to offices with high-speed connectivity, why use the cloud for that? – I would stick with what I have got, use Config Mgr and local Distribution Points and create an application deployment for my vital piece of software.
- If the company I worked for developed Universal Windows Apps, how would I deploy it to my test computers? What do I need? How do I install it? – I would have to enable the developer mode in settings, and then I would have to install the appx package, making sure I have a certificate (from a trusted authority ) for the application, and then use PowerShell to install the app. https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/application-management/sideload-apps-in-windows-10
Now I hear you ask, how do I do that with Intune?
I am glad you asked that question, this is Modern Management after all, and we all know Microsoft wants us to use the ‘Cloud’, when it’s the right tool, and to save us all the hard work, let’s use MVP Anoop’s blog post on exactly that! (Thank You Anoop! )
- In short, enable by adding a management tool (Intune), then sync and deploy by assigning (from the store), to people see that was easy!
Now, how do we do that if we only have M365 licensing at our company, and want to deploy applications to our iOS users who are enrolled with Intune and belong to the IT department?
What do we have to do first? – Of course, we add the application to Intune, and then follow the link for the rest of the steps.
Well, that is super easy, it’s Intune!
I think we are nearing the end of Part 4, it’s been a long day, and there’s only enough study in a day, so let us begin the final sprint.
Windows Information Protection Policies, what are they, and what do they do?
Well, read this first: https://docs.microsoft.com/en-gb/windows/security/information-protection/windows-information-protection/create-wip-policy-using-intune-azure
First, you will have to add apps, how you add them depends on MDM or MAM (what??? Read the link, trust me, it will explain everything you need to know, and I am not typing all that out)
All I would say is that you should ensure you know about protection policies and notifications and actions!
App Protection Policies – Read the link!
https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/intune/app-protection-policies
And finally, we get to One Drive, hooray!
https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/onedrive/plan-onedrive-enterprise
I would learn the last three pages quite well to get through the exam.
And ‘Shout Out’ to Anoop, hope you don’t mind me using the info in our blog, all credited to you of course!

MD-101 - Endless Case Studies
Today i've done the test to earn the MD-101 (Manage Modern Desktop).
The test went well in the beginning but after answering 5 case studies, it appeared me more 5 case studies. And after those case studies it appeared more 3. And after 3, it appeared more 1.
The time was running out, and I ended up failing the MD-101 test for some reason, which I tought it went pretty well...
Can I retake the exam or did I passed in your database?
Thanks, João >removed<
