MA Literary Art

Applicants need to have a Bachelors degree in any discipline with minimum 45% marks or equivalent grade from a recognised university (Relaxation of 5% marks for SC/ST/PwBD/D-OBC (NCL)/Defence/KM).

Eligibility

Candidates must display a keen interest in literary history and genericity, in addition to some knowledge and appreciation of a range of literary texts.

Since 2012, the M.A. Literary Art Creative Writing programme has pioneered the pedagogy of Creative Writing in India with its unique insistence on inculcating in the student both the practice and the theory of literary writing. It imagines a writer as inhabiting a range of literary, historical, social & existential horizons, each of which have their bearing on the nature and depth of individual literary output.

The programme aims to produce writers who are self-reflective and critically aware of the literary, social and cultural landscape of the region and the period they inhabit. It hopes to produce writers who are self-directed and have a unique individual literary voice.

The programme furthers the mandate of AUD to promote attributes of creativity, social responsibility and sensitivity among students, so that they become socially productive and engaged citizens. Additionally, the program combines a strong praxis orientation with a commitment to critical scholarship and interdisciplinarity. It furthers the emphasis on self-directed learning through a classroom based, continuous workshop model, individual research, and the production of creative manuscripts through an engagement with the experiential as well as the social.

At its inception, the School of Culture and Creative Expressions (SCCE) was envisaged as a site where both the theoretical and the practice mode were equally privileged in order to develop a new pedagogy of the creative arts. The M.A. Literary Art Creative Writing programme is a realization of this pedagogic model, combining equally rigorous reading, writing and theoretical components.

It is a two year M.A. Programme with two semesters each year. A semester is of sixteen weeks duration. The students should register for a minimum of 16 credits each semester and need to earn 64 credits to complete the Programme. They may register for more credits on payment of extra fees. All the students of SCCE need to take three common Foundational Courses, one each in the first three semesters, for 12 credits in total. They should also take four Elective Courses offered by the School or any other School in the University, one each in all the four semesters, for 16 credits in total. They need to take seven compulsory Core Courses from their respective discipline (in this case Literary Art Creative Writing) for 28 credits in total. Their MA dissertation in the final semester will earn them eight credits.

Is this a Practice-based programme?

The M.A. Literary Art Creative Writing programme combines both creative writing practice (workshop model) and analytical courses. The students get an opportunity to pursue their creative practice as writers (writing fiction, non-fiction or poetry in the practice-based courses) even as their critical thinking is honed by a set of analytical courses. We believe that both these sets of courses are equally important for the development of our students as creative writers.

What are the career paths which emerge after doing an M.A. Literary Art Creative Writing?

The M.A. Literary Art Creative Writing programme significantly shapes your personal creative writing practice and hones your capacity for critical thought and scholarship. Apart from preparing grounds for your professional role as a creative writer, these attributes are also helpful in career paths such as Journalism, Editorial Work, Research and Teaching, Content Writing, Writing for the Screen and Digital Platforms, among others.

How do I apply?

Online applications open usually between April to June each year. Please check the university website regularly around this time of the year. There is an entrance test and an interview.

How do I prepare for the M.A. Literary Art Creative Writing Programme entrance test?

entrance test has a small objective section (usually 20%) that tests your familiarity with the field of literature. The rest of the exam tests your ability to respond creatively to a variety of writing prompts, related to fiction, non-fiction or poetry. The only preparation we can suggest for such an entrance test is a substantial amount of reading of literary texts across genres, time-periods and regions, and a considerable prior experience of doing creative writing of your own.

What should I get along with me for the interview?

Identity proof, admit card and a portfolio with representative samples of your creative writing.

How Can One Develop This Key Skill of Writing?

Writing about any creative topic demands versed skills in a writer. Although, creative writing is an art but can be honed by consistent practice and guidance. A true aspirant of this writing can develop it by taking any creative writing course and daily writing habits. Certain techniques can help immensely to develop this art gradually. Although, various online and offline Creative Writing Courses in India are available to cultivate this unique art of writing.

Let’s Learn How to Start Writing Creatively:

(a) Read a Lot – A versed writer first becomes a voracious reader before attempting to write anything. Reading a range of books based on interest teaches us a basic frame of writing. Consistent reading habits can help us in absorbing the fine content of a book. A reader can perceive the demand of a reader. In addition to that, a reader can reap useful vocab and phrases from good books and can use them in his writing. Reading also encourages a writer to write about a learned lesson.

(b) Find Your Niche – To write about your interest always remains everyone’s cup of tea. One must figure out his sphere of interest before an attempt to write. Once one reads and writes his imagination in a particular area of interest, he starts honing this art of writing. Niche makes a writer’s mind concentrate on one sort of writing and he evolves his writing gradually.

(c) Seize All Chances of Writing – We should never skip any single chance of writing whatsoever that comes in our way. Writing on daily basis will inculcate our habit of writing and gradually the habit of writing leads us to excel in our niche. We can keep a daily journal or handy notes, and notepad apps on the phone for cultivating writing habits.

(d) Find Out Your Audience and Their Area of Interest – Writing in our niche is one best idea one should keep in mind. But we must also identify what our audience demand from us. First of all, there should be a vivid picture of our audience then we should try to fulfill their need through writing.

(e) Add Literary Content in Writing – Creative writing paints our picture of imagination in the form of words. To make a vivid picture of it, we should incorporate the usage of metaphor, rhyme, and similes in our writing to make it more lucrative and insightful.

(f) Have a Deep Understanding of the Subject – Before attempting to write creatively, we must imbibe knowledge about the subject. We can grasp enough knowledge of a subject by doing enough search on the internet and reading related books. We can enlarge a broad picture of a subject if we carry out thorough research about it. Knowledge also boosts our confidence level and primes our minds to create easy content about the subject

(g) Depicts a Story of Your Subject – Story is easy to consume by a reader and once the reader lands his attention on our story, we can take him into the depth of our subject. Hence, the articulation of a good story in our writing can work as a tool for us. It bridges the heart of the writer and reader. Moreover, the story gives us a space to put our imagination into the story.

(h) Don’t Pause Your Flow of Writing – Our thoughts come out as a stream of the river. If we try to hold it, it does not get direction. Similarly, our imagination for a subject comes like flow and we should keep writing without any interruption. Let it flow and then reshape it as per the audience’s understanding. Our flow while writing helps us to put all the pieces of content.

(i) Use Emotion in Writing as an Adulterant – Writing creatively is not rule-based writing. Our content is driven by our rigid or soft emotions. If we subtract those emotions from writing then it will be an empty post of characters. So, in this writing, we should cater to our emotions while crafting words for the subject. Non-verbal communication is not interpreted by simple words then there is a need for the expression of emotion through creative writing. This writing demands emotion for deep explanations.

Creative writing has gained widespread popularity in the writing industry because it has been working as a powerful tool for writers to take them one step more advanced than any other mode of writing. The information entailed in this writing goes hand in hand with the reader because the writer does not write his knowledge in it but also shares his emotion in the form of words.

Let’s Count the Benefits of Creative Writing:

(a) Elevate Your Mental Flexibility – Everybody is overwhelmed by the stimulation of emotions. In a study , it was highlighted that a person who exercises this writing expresses his emotions organically. A creative mindset always perceives opponents’ empathy and responds according to them which also helps a creative writer profoundly in writing.

(b) Build Your Vocabulary Bank – Writing creatively needs a range of vocabulary and phrases to express emotions and solutions. Practicing this writing will grow your vocabulary stock which directly strengthens your writing skills. Writing begins with a single word and ends with a conclusion.

In this process of writing, a creative writer also emphasizes words to generate new imagination and again shapes that imagination into words. In doing so, a writer goes through many words and learns to use a single word in different ways.

(c) Spike Your Confidence Level – It engages a writer to write about imaginary things wherein a writer finds an asymmetric problem and attempts to find a solution for the same. And the writer feels appreciated after getting answers for imagination. It directly hits on the dopamine loop of a writer and makes him confident about any real problem. Writing gives a push to our confidence because a writer makes himself proud of new things. A generation brings a proud moment in every generator’s life.

(d) Writing Hones Your Communication Skills – Writing hones your communication skills because we get in touch with others’ perspectives while crafting words in this writing. If we can build up the quality to read the mind of our audience then we can deliver our ideas smoothly.

No matter how good content we have in our minds and how much we know about something because your projection of content makes you apart from others. Likewise, in this art of writing, a writer develops this art of projection through imagination and practice.

You can channelise your passion for creative writing into avenues that will yield benefits. Your skills can get you paid work.

Here are some options for creative writer’s who have confined themselves to certain guidelines. However, this is not a cakewalk to make easy money. Writers have to engage in multiple projects to have several income sources.

  • The creative writing contest is a common and easy way of making money for talented artists. Passion-driven people who are more committed to being competitive can take it up as a challenge.

  • Copywriting is a necessity for advertising. Companies need copywriters for all the marketing and designing help. It could be a great source of income as these jobs are very common.

There are many ways to earn using your creative writing skills. Choosing multiple avenues for generating a steady income is always prudent. Nonetheless, you must resort to some satisfying way to keep yourself happy.

Here are a few tips, for all new and professional writers, to improve the creative process:

  • As a beginner, writing in smaller segments is more productive. This allows you to focus better and develops endurance.
  • Writing should be a daily routine. Pick a specific time in which your clarity of thought is more.
  • Writers must note every observation they make and add it to their list of ideas. Ideally, they should carry a pen and a notepad to write down any detail worth remembering. These ideas can be used to develop a storyline.
  • Writing is a gradual process and stories and articles cannot be written within a timeframe. They are built upon over time.
  • Always identify the message and then build the theme around the topic.
  • Pick a style of writing that suits you. Practise and determine your strength and work on your weakness.
  • Be persistent in telling compelling stories.
  • The flow of ideas should be controlled and regulated through a lot of reading and

Observing.

  • The voracious reader would find it easier to fine-tune his writing skills as he is exposed to different genres and styles. He can critically evaluate situations and characters. His originality improves.

In conclusion, creative writing in itself allows you to enjoy yourself. This non-stressful activity decreases stress levels by releasing endorphins. The flexible working hours allow you to focus on other aspects of life too. However, there may be pressure to meet deadlines but that applies to a major chunk of jobs. Payscale is not constant and it depends on the skills and experience of the writer. Being mindful of these, if your penchant is creativity and painting with words, then there is no stopping. Allow your imagination to take over and sharpen your writing skills. Augment your style and amplify the writer’s voice. Hone your perceptive by enlisting in the right course.

The courses stated in this article are the most reputed and the best in the country. Due to the global pandemic and geographical locations, all of them offer online courses. This has crossed out the biggest hurdle for many professionals and has permitted everyone to create their learning environment. Make a choice that will decide your future.

Ma in creative writing.

An MA in Creative Writing is a very different sort of masters degree to most. Unlike many degrees, where the focus is on learning about the subject, and undertaking research, a creative writing masters focuses on honing your writing skills. This doesn’t mean there’s no studying or learning involved and that you just write – just that it is a very different style of degree. You’ll have to be prepared to work hard, to suffer writer’s block and work past it, and take constructive criticism on the things you’ve written. For some people, this might be incredibly difficult but for others it may sound like just the thing they’ve been looking for. If you’re the latter, then an MA in Creative Writing may just be perfect for you.

MA in Creative Writing

Creative writing MA

So, what sort of work will you be expected to do on your Creative Writing MA ? As we mentioned, it’s not quite as simple as choosing between research or taught .  It’s unlikely that you’ll be taught just how to be creative, but rather, the focus will be on technical skills. It’s not just aimed at those of you who want to write fiction either, thanks to the scope of skills a Masters in Creative Writing will teach, it’s well suited to prospective journalists, or other such careers.

Generally, there are workshops held on a regular basis working on a variety of different styles and genres. Don’t expect to be able to coast by on the areas you’re comfortable writing in – the whole point of studying a creative writing MA is to get you out of your comfort zone and into strange new worlds of writing, working on things that will teach you the most. In addition to workshops, there’ll also be a mix of one-to-one supervision, working on portfolios and extended writing projects. There will be a variety of modules available, for example, you may focus on writing for young adults, and learn the technical skills required to be successful in that area. Or it’s possible you might move away from prose and into working on poetry.

Qualifications needed for a masters in creative writing

But what qualifications are required to do such a course? You might be concerned that you need proof of your written work, or instance, evidence of having been published. Luckily, that’s not the case. You’ll instead you will usually be required to have an upper second class degree (2.1) or above, as well as presenting a portfolio of work available for evaluation.

Funding a masters in creative writing

How can you fund a Creative Writing MA ? Well, as always there’s the standard ways – from loans through to charity grants. But what is there specifically available for this course? Well, let’s take a look at those charities again. It’s likely you’ll be able to find a few specifically aimed at creative writing students. It’s the same with bursaries as some universities will have bursaries available for certain courses. Of course, there are some more unconventional alternatives available for you. It can often be difficult to hold down a job with a regular schedule as a postgraduate student, but if you’re doing a creative writing MA why not put those skills to good use? From picking up freelance writing work, to entering writing competitions, there are all sorts of alternative methods to gain money for your degree.

Career options after completing your masters in creative writing?

But what exactly can you do with a creative writing MA ? Well, there’s the obvious career course of becoming a novelist. But this is a difficult area to break into, and you don’t want to pin all your hopes on it. Not to worry, there are a bunch of other jobs that can use this sort of degree. Firstly, ghostwriting. Ghostwriting can be a fairly lucrative career, and if you’re not bothered by having your name attached, a great way to start. Then there are fields such as journalism or publishing. But these are the obvious career choices.

Where else could doing an MA creative writing land you? Employers in areas such as marketing and advertising love people who can spin words, and other areas such as writing grant proposals or patents find a knack for writing useful. Think outside the box, and you’ll find there are plenty of places it could go! In recent times, even universities such as Cambridge have started doing masters in creative writing, so the degree is gaining more and more respect. Who knows where you’ll end up?

‌ MA in Creative Writing

*applications for 2024/25 are open*.

ma in creative writing in india

Creative writing in the UCD School of English, Drama and Film draws on the long literary heritage of Dublin as a place that has produced many world-famous authors. It takes full advantage of the range of vibrant and dynamic literary activities in a country and a city where writers and writing are celebrated. The University has played a major role in the development of literary cultures both in Ireland and internationally and has long been associated with some of Ireland's greatest writers, including James Joyce, Flann O' Brien, Mary Lavin, Patrick Kavanagh, Maeve Binchy, Thomas Kinsella, Eilis Ni Dhuibne and Marina Carr. It is committed to supporting writers in all fields, including fiction, poetry and performance writing, as well as a diverse range of creative non-fiction.

UCD offers three graduate courses in creative writing, an MA, an MFA and a PhD programme.  The MA programme includes lectures, seminars, workshops and supervision meetings, providing committed students with the support they need to produce a major piece of writing by the end of the course.  A weekly visiting writer programme brings all graduate students into contact with some of Ireland’s finest writers as well as literary agents and publishers. Every year a writer in residence, appointed with the Arts Council of Ireland, provides a credit-based workshop and individual direction to students.

Writers currently involved with the MA and MFA programmes in creative writing include the playwright, novelist and poet Frank McGuiness, poet Ian Davidson, novelist and poet Paul Perry, novelist Anne Enright, short story writer and novelist Katy Hayes, novelist Declan Hughes, novelist Gavin Corbett and Sinéad Gleeson as Arts Council Writer in Residence. Participants in the MA also get the opportunity to attend the very many cultural and literary events that take place in UCD, and recent visitors include Margaret Atwood, Kevin Barry, Eiléan Ní Chuilleanain, Paula Meehan and Paul Muldoon.

The School of English, Drama and Film has always included in its programme of extra-curricular activities a rich array of readings, writing workshops, writers’ groups, and special seminars offered by writers-in-residence. In 2006 a structured programme of courses and supervision, the now well-established MA in Creative Writing, was introduced to enable committed writers to develop their potential within a supportive framework. It is a one-year course of lectures, seminars, workshops and supervision meetings which aims to provide committed writers with taught classes on theories and practices of writing, presentation and editing techniques, reading of selected texts as writers and supervision of a major writing project.

There are first-rate libraries in UCD and the Dublin area. Several have renowned archives as well as expertly resourced electronic collections. Over many years, the School has established a worldwide reputation for excellence in fostering postgraduate research and in teaching. Designated as a UNESCO City of Literature in 2009, Dublin has an immense amount to offer aspiring writers.

The student group is international, and students come to UCD from many countries to pursue their writing ambitions including Ireland, the UK, US, New Zealand, India, Austria and Germany.  Most have a good deal of writing experience and wish to pursue professional careers in writing, with specialisations in novel writing/short stories or poetry. Several of our alumni have won prestigious awards.

The Creative Writing programme exposes undergraduates at Ashoka University to the practice of writing poetry, fiction, nonfiction and translation. The minor introduces students to a diverse range of texts. Creative Writing classes assist the interpretation of literature from the point of view of a practitioner. The program aims not only to help beginning writers but also develop the writing skills of undergraduates who would go on to work in a variety of professions: law, journalism, publishing, copywriting and editing. It will benefit students who pursue advanced practice in writing and/or other forms of academic scholarship. Any student who wants to learn writing skills to organize information into impactful forms of narration and communication will benefit from this minor. Ashoka University’s Creative Writing Minor creates an environment students work peer-to-peer and derive inspiration and guidance from faculty and a wide range of visiting writers who visit the campus for events, readings, lectures, and workshops.

Student Testimonials

” I wasn’t going to be an English and Creative writing major at Ashoka; While I loved the few courses I took in the other department, the Literature department convinced me – without having to do much – that a department switch was the move for me. I used to write in school, even had an embarrassing blog. You know how utterly useless feedback from strangers can be when you’re a naive 12 year old just looking for validation online? Yeah, I “deserved to be published everywhere”. It’s only at Ashoka that not only was I brought back down to earth, taught to be more humble and critical of my own writing, but also told that writing is very personal and subjective. It taught me the perfect balance of knowing what it is that one should write versus what it is that I wanted to write. I’ve also realised my own style of writing in my very last year at Ashoka, something I’d never tried before.”

Ragini Anand,

UG ‘20, ASP ‘21

” I am a History major in the Ashoka Scholars Program and I completed my CW minor in Spring 2020. I started my journey in the program with a Critical Thinking Seminar, Translation based Writing Course in 2018, and am proud and privileged to be among the first translation students that this program has produced. Taking translation practice courses through the years has not only made me a translator, but also a far superior historian. It has given me a vocabulary and language that is very unique even within the interdisciplinary world of Ashokan academics. The classroom experience, especially with a small tight-knit group of translators has been interactive and extremely rewarding, along with the teaching experience through the TAships. The program’s biggest strength is imagination; the imagination of those who run it and the imagination of its students. I completed my thesis with Professor Arunava Sinha; a translation of Shirshendu Mukhopodhaya’s Ayodhya: Ram er Bonobaas er Poth e is going to be published by Bee Books.”

“While creative writing is understood to be political, it was during my minor in creative writing that I was introduced to the idea of literary activism, through conferences as well as classroom discussions. Debating the hegemony of the story as the structure of choice, understanding the moral and aesthetic implications of the Oulipo movement, and above all, learning to think through my choices and impulses as a writer has been exciting and challenging. Being able to read widely, having the most fun and bizarre conversations with Professors and classmates alike, finding a writing community that I trust and bank upon, and faculty that are deeply invested in their students made for a truly wonderful experience.”

Halak Pandya (UG ‘19, ASP ‘20),

Major: English; Deferred an offer from Rutgers University for an MA in English and Creative Writing, currently taking a year off to read and write more.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are there pre-requisites for certain courses.

A student can opt for courses 3-6 only after the completion of the course ‘Introduction to Creative Writing’.  Forms of Literature or the CTS do not have pre-requisites.

Can repeating a course, say, doing Craft of Writing twice earn me credits towards the minor?

A student can only opt for the same genre workshop twice and gain credits towards the minor. E.g. Ishita completes Poetry Workshop in Monsoon ’19. She can opt for the Poetry Workshop offered in Monsoon ’20 and gain credits towards her minor completion.

One can, of course, opt for other courses more than once as well. However, repetitions of courses other than the Workshops do not count towards the minor. They will nonetheless add 4 credits to a student’s overall credits.

Does the CTS count towards the CW minor of English students?

The CTS will only count towards the CW minor requirement of Non-English Majors. CTS is an alternative to Forms of Literature for Non-English majors. However, Forms of Literature is a required course for English Majors.

When do I have to do a thesis? What’s the deadline for submitting it? Can I do the Publishing Seminar without it? Do I get to choose my advisor?

The first complete draft of the thesis will be due on 15th January, preceding the semester you plan to graduate. Only students who successfully submit this complete first draft will be permitted to enrol in the Publishing Seminar and complete the minor.

Additionally, there are two internal deadlines for submission with your advisors: 1/3rd of the thesis (5000 words for prose; 6 poems for poetry, and 6 pages for graphic narrative) is due on 31st August. 2/3rd (10,000 words for prose; 12 poems for poetry, and 12 pages for graphic narrative) is due on 15th October.

Do note that all these deadlines are for drafts only. These deadlines ensure that students have the entirety of the Spring semester to revise and polish their thesis with their advisor. After their publishing seminar, they will have a concrete final draft ready for submission at the end of the Spring semester.

What kind of thesis can I write? How lengthy does it have to be?

A student can write prose, poetry or graphic narrative for their thesis. The minimum requirement for a thesis of prose form is 15,000 words, 20 poems for poetry, and 20 pages for a graphic narrative. One can also write a mixed-form thesis. However, the student must discuss the details of such a thesis with their advisor. Students may write Fiction, Poetry, Translation(s) of any form, Essays, Non-Fiction Narratives, Graphic Narratives.

Can certain ISMs replace one of the required courses?

Independent Study Modules (ISMs) do not replace ANY of the required courses for the minor. Nonetheless, credits earned from any ISM will count towards their UG degree as appropriate, and will appear on their transcripts.

Creative Writing Program Marks Three Decades of Growth, Diversity

Black and white photo shows old American seaside town with title 'Barely South Review'

By Luisa A. Igloria

2024: a milestone year which marks the 30 th  anniversary of Old Dominion University’s MFA Creative Writing Program. Its origins can be said to go back to April 1978, when the English Department’s (now Professor Emeritus, retired) Phil Raisor organized the first “Poetry Jam,” in collaboration with Pulitzer prize-winning poet W.D. Snodgrass (then a visiting poet at ODU). Raisor describes this period as “ a heady time .” Not many realize that from 1978 to 1994, ODU was also the home of AWP (the Association of Writers and Writing Programs) until it moved to George Mason University in Fairfax, Virginia.

The two-day celebration that was “Poetry Jam” has evolved into the annual ODU Literary Festival, a week-long affair at the beginning of October bringing writers of local, national, and international reputation to campus. The ODU Literary Festival is among the longest continuously running literary festivals nationwide. It has featured Rita Dove, Maxine Hong Kingston, Susan Sontag, Edward Albee, John McPhee, Tim O’Brien, Joy Harjo, Dorothy Allison, Billy Collins, Naomi Shihab Nye, Sabina Murray, Jane Hirshfield, Brian Turner, S.A. Cosby, Nicole Sealey, Franny Choi, Ross Gay, Adrian Matejka, Aimee Nezhukumatathil, Ilya Kaminsky, Marcelo Hernandez Castillo, Jose Olivarez, and Ocean Vuong, among a roster of other luminaries. MFA alumni who have gone on to publish books have also regularly been invited to read.

From an initial cohort of 12 students and three creative writing professors, ODU’s MFA Creative Writing Program has grown to anywhere between 25 to 33 talented students per year. Currently they work with a five-member core faculty (Kent Wascom, John McManus, and Jane Alberdeston in fiction; and Luisa A. Igloria and Marianne L. Chan in poetry). Award-winning writers who made up part of original teaching faculty along with Raisor (but are now also either retired or relocated) are legends in their own right—Toi Derricotte, Tony Ardizzone, Janet Peery, Scott Cairns, Sheri Reynolds, Tim Seibles, and Michael Pearson. Other faculty that ODU’s MFA Creative Writing Program was privileged to briefly have in its ranks include Molly McCully Brown and Benjamín Naka-Hasebe Kingsley.

"What we’ve also found to be consistently true is how collegial this program is — with a lively and supportive cohort, and friendships that last beyond time spent here." — Luisa A. Igloria, Louis I. Jaffe Endowed Professor & University Professor of English and Creative Writing at Old Dominion University

Our student body is diverse — from all over the country as well as from closer by. Over the last ten years, we’ve also seen an increase in the number of international students who are drawn to what our program has to offer: an exciting three-year curriculum of workshops, literature, literary publishing, and critical studies; as well as opportunities to teach in the classroom, tutor in the University’s Writing Center, coordinate the student reading series and the Writers in Community outreach program, and produce the student-led literary journal  Barely South Review . The third year gives our students more time to immerse themselves in the completion of a book-ready creative thesis. And our students’ successes have been nothing but amazing. They’ve published with some of the best (many while still in the program), won important prizes, moved into tenured academic positions, and been published in global languages. What we’ve also found to be consistently true is how collegial this program is — with a lively and supportive cohort, and friendships that last beyond time spent here.

Our themed studio workshops are now offered as hybrid/cross genre experiences. My colleagues teach workshops in horror, speculative and experimental fiction, poetry of place, poetry and the archive — these give our students so many more options for honing their skills. And we continue to explore ways to collaborate with other programs and units of the university. One of my cornerstone projects during my term as 20 th  Poet Laureate of the Commonwealth was the creation of a Virginia Poets Database, which is not only supported by the University through the Perry Library’s Digital Commons, but also by the MFA Program in the form of an assistantship for one of our students. With the awareness of ODU’s new integration with Eastern Virginia Medical School (EVMS) and its impact on other programs, I was inspired to design and pilot a new 700-level seminar on “Writing the Body Fantastic: Exploring Metaphors of Human Corporeality.” In the fall of 2024, I look forward to a themed graduate workshop on “Writing (in) the Anthropocene,” where my students and I will explore the subject of climate precarity and how we can respond in our own work.

Even as the University and wider community go through shifts and change through time, the MFA program has grown with resilience and grace. Once, during the six years (2009-15) that I directed the MFA Program, a State Council of Higher Education for Virginia (SCHEV) university-wide review amended the guidelines for what kind of graduate student would be allowed to teach classes (only those who had  already  earned 18 or more graduate credits). Thus, two of our first-year MFA students at that time had to be given another assignment for their Teaching Assistantships. I thought of  AWP’s hallmarks of an effective MFA program , which lists the provision of editorial and publishing experience to its students through an affiliated magazine or press — and immediately sought department and upper administration support for creating a literary journal. This is what led to the creation of our biannual  Barely South Review  in 2009.

In 2010,  HuffPost  and  Poets & Writers  listed us among “ The Top 25 Underrated Creative Writing MFA Programs ” (better underrated than overrated, right?) — and while our MFA Creative Writing Program might be smaller than others, we do grow good writers here. When I joined the faculty in 1998, I was excited by the high caliber of both faculty and students. Twenty-five years later, I remain just as if not more excited, and look forward to all the that awaits us in our continued growth.

This essay was originally published in the Spring 2024 edition of Barely South Review , ODU’s student-led literary journal. The University’s growing MFA in Creative Writing program connects students with a seven-member creative writing faculty in fiction, poetry, and nonfiction.

Enhance your college career by gaining relevant experience with the skills and knowledge needed for your future career. Discover our experiential learning opportunities.
