Purpose This paper aims to review logistics and supply chain management topics where theories have been applied to better understand the supply chain management (SCM) discipline identity. The purpose is threefold: to identify research topics in logistics and supply chain management where one or more theories have been examined; provide commentary on the theories that have been applied to the various logistics and SCM research topics; and to provide reference material and direction for future research. Design/methodology/approach This structured literature review (SLR) examines research papers in logistics and SCM from 1991 to 2015 published in eight leading academic journals. Papers in the data set are grouped by topic and further analyzed in terms of research method, purpose, year and journal. We examine how UK universities view different topics within supply-chain management as seen in their research output and their postgraduate curricula and whether this view matches the relative emphasis on these aspects by UK-based employers when hiring. Using content analysis, we analysed: (1) UK-based supply-chain/logistics job advertisements, (2) abstracts of research articles by UK academics in supply- chain/logistics journals, and (3) the description of the postgraduate-level supply-chain/logistics degrees in UK universities. Our findings show that the overall research output of UK universities is broadly in line with employers’ needs with regards to the relative emphasis on different supply-chain topics. However, their relative emphasis on these topics in their teaching programmes is quite different. We suggest that universities need to look into their provision of academic programmes in relation to employers’ needs and need to look into how to leverage their research output better for this purpose.

The purpose of this article is to examine the output of logistics and supply chain-related dissertation research during the period, 2005–2009, and compare that output with earlier published dissertations from 1970 to 2004. Doctoral students and faculty members can identify emerging areas of research based on the year-by-year trends in topical coverage. Qualitative research analysis of 609 doctoral dissertations published by Dissertation Abstracts International over a 5-year period (2005–2009) was performed. Results suggest that future prospects for additional dissertations being published in logistics and supply chain-related areas are excellent. Many dissertations are emanated from colleges of engineering and business. The prominent research methodologies employed by doctoral students are modeling, simulation, and empirical quantitative methods. More colleges/universities are graduating doctoral students in these areas. Some shift is occurring with respect to the specific colleges/universities that are leading the way in terms of generating the largest number of logistics and supply chain graduates.

How Machine Learning Will Transform Supply Chain Management

Businesses need better planning to make their supply chains more agile and resilient. After explaining the shortcomings of traditional planning systems, the authors describe their new approach, optimal machine learning (OML), which has proved effective in a range of industries. A central feature is its decision-support engine that can process a vast amount of historical and current supply-and-demand data, take into account a company’s priorities, and rapidly produce recommendations for ideal production quantities, shipping arrangements, and so on. The authors explain the underpinnings of OML and provide concrete examples of how two large companies implemented it and improved their supply chains’ performance.
It does a better job of using data and forecasts to make decisions.

The problem.
Flawed planning methods make it extremely difficult for companies to protect themselves against supply chain disruptions.
A new approach, called optimal machine learning (OML), can enable better decisions, without the mystery surrounding the planning recommendations produced by current machine-learning models.
The Elements
OML relies on a decision-support engine that connects input data directly to supply chain decisions and takes into account a firm’s performance priorities. Other features are a “digital twin” representation of the entire supply chain and a data storage system that integrates information throughout the supply chain and allows for quick data access and updating.
The Covid-19 pandemic, the Russia-Ukraine conflict, trade wars, and other events in recent years have disrupted supply chains and highlighted the critical need for businesses to improve planning in order to be more agile and resilient. Yet companies struggle with this challenge. One major cause is flawed forecasting, which results in delivery delays, inventory levels that are woefully out of sync with demand, and disappointing financial performance. Those consequences are hardly surprising. After all, how can inventory and production decisions be made effectively when demand forecasts are widely off?
- Narendra Agrawal is the Benjamin and Mae Swig Professor of Information Systems and Analytics at Santa Clara University’s Leavey School of Business.
- Morris A. Cohen is the Panasonic Professor Emeritus of Manufacturing & Logistics at the University of Pennsylvania’s Wharton School. He is also the founder of AD3 Analytics, a start-up that developed the OML methodology for supply chain management.
- Rohan Deshpande is a machine learning scientist at Cerebras Systems and a former chief technology officer at AD3 Analytics.
- Vinayak Deshpande is the Mann Family Distinguished Professor of Operations at the University of North Carolina’s Kenan-Flagler Business School.

Core modules
Freight transport and logistics services.
(20 credits)
This module examines the changing market for freight transport and logistics services in a European and increasingly global context. The key modes of transport are evaluated in terms of their costs, operational capabilities and performance. Changing demands for new services are assessed. Strategic options for service providers are explored within the broader policy and planning framework.
Logistics and the external environment
This module is designed to make students aware of the external influences that companies must take into account in the design and operation of their logistics systems. Supply chains do not exist in a vacuum, and there are many issues that companies need to consider to ensure that they operate legally and responsibly in addition to meeting their own internal company objectives.
Logistics management in a retail supply chain context
This module provides the foundation for studying logistics and supply chain management. A particular focus is on the retail sector, which is at the forefront of logistics and supply chain developments. The module ensures that students are aware of the components of the logistics system and how they interact with each other to influence the design and operation of retail supply chains. It focuses on the aspects of logistics operations that tend to be directly within the control of companies. New patterns of retailing and the implication for logistics are assessed. International comparisons are made.
Purchasing management
The module purpose is for students to gain knowledge of the topic, including the purchasing management process, negotiation techniques, supplier appraisal and the buyer's role, purchasing in the supply chain, technology in e-procurement and collaborative relationships in the international supply system. The emphasis will be on the supply chain, both internationally and in e-business.
Research dissertation (Logistics)
(40 credits)
This module builds on the Research Skills for Logistics module, leading to completion of an individual research dissertation. This draws on techniques and background material introduced on the course, and incorporating original analysis. The main work phase takes place between March and September.
Research skills for logistics
The module aims to develop your knowledge and competence of the research process and the application of research methods relevant to logistics and supply chain management. It covers an introduction to qualitative, quantitative and mixed method research and considers the contexts within which different methods are useful and how they should be applied in practice. It introduces the areas of research design, data collection and analysis, and presentation of findings. The module is intended to complement more specialised course-specific modules and provides the foundations for the Research Dissertation (Logistics) module.
Sustainability and freight transport
This module is focused on the study of sustainability and green logistics, with a particular emphasis on freight transport. The first part of the module provides the context for sustainable supply chains, examining the business and public policy reasons for attempting to address sustainability issues, and examining how sustainability impacts are measured, monitored and reported. The second part of the module focuses on the freight transport element of supply chain management, looking at the strategic, operational and public policy perspectives.
Option modules
Airline and airport management.
The module explores the nature of demand for air travel and prospects for the future. It considers the role of economic regulation and impact of deregulation. Governance, economic and commercial characteristics of both the airline and airport industries are investigated and different airline models such as low-cost airlines, charter carriers and airline alliances are examined. The airline-airport relationship together with the role of marketing is evaluated. The scope for airports in developing commercial (non-aeronautical) sources of revenues, including those related to events and conferences, is also assessed. In addition, the broader impacts of air travel on the economy and the environment are explored.
Business process integration with SAP
This module considers the role of information and process integration within organisations, focusing on enterprise-wide software and business process integration. It evaluates the impact that enterprise wide systems can have, and the crucial role they play in organisational communication. The role of information in enabling process integration and how this underpins organisational knowledge and strategy provides the theoretical framework for the module. The module incorporates extensive practical work using the University’s SAP system for students enabling enhanced conceptual understanding of process integration issues.
Land use, planning and transport
This module outlines the key land use and transport issues in contemporary Britain. You will look at transport in evolving urban land use systems, modelling and forecasting land use and transport relationships, transport demands and retail development, light rail and land use, and sustainable residential and workplace development.
Modifying transport behaviour: theory, practice and politics
This module will provide a compelling insight into the state of the art of modifying behaviour in transport, from well-established interventions (such as speed limits) to relatively new ones (such as personal travel planning).
Streets, places and Active Transport
The first half of the course introduces a range of theoretical concepts relating to traffic and travel behaviour in urban areas. It also familiarises you with key strategic policy issues affecting both the movement and management of urban traffic.
In the second part, you will explore practical design feasibility and management issues associated with the implementation of policy measures at the street level.

Senior lecturer.
Marzena Piotrowska is a Research Fellow and a Lecturer in Logistics and Freight Transport. She has been the Course Leader of the Logistics and Supply Chain Management MSc course since 2017.
Marzena’s primary research interests are focused on city logistics, urban freight consolidation and transport policy. She has been involved in a number of research projects looking at various aspects of freight transport and logistics operations, including urban goods distribution, rail freight and modal shift.
The majority of Marzena’s current research work centres on the role of urban freight consolidation in supporting sustainable urban logistics.
My main research interests include city logistics, urban freight consolidation and transport policy.

Entry Requirements
- EU and international
A minimum of a lower second class honours degree (2:2). Relevant degree disciplines include economics, business studies, management, geography and operations research. However, students with qualifications in other disciplines such as languages and the humanities, engineering, and environmental sciences are also encouraged to apply. Alternative qualifications with relevant professional experience will also be considered.
If your first language is not English, you should have an IELTS 6.5 with at least 6.5 in writing and no element below 6.0.
Applicants are required to submit a Personal Statement (maximum 750 words), which should include a clear explanation of their motivations for studying logistics and supply chain management, and identify the key challenges which, in their view, are facing supply chains in the next 10 years.
Applicants are required to submit one academic reference.

How you’ll be taught
