The Department of Psychology at Florida State University offers focused PhD training in the five primary domains of the discipline – Clinical Psychology, Cognition and Cognitive Neuroscience, Developmental Psychology, and Social Psychology. Doctoral training in Neuroscience is offered to Psychology students through the interdepartmental FSU Program in Neuroscience. We also offer a Master's degree in Psychology with a specialization in Applied Behavior Analysis. This program allows students to complete their Master’s degree at both the FSU Tallahassee and FSU Panama City campuses.

Doctoral training in all areas occurs in world-class laboratories under the supervision of our internationally recognized faculty. The Forensic Psychology Specialization (18 cr.) is available to psychology majors. It will expose you to the intersection between psychology as the study of human behavior and the legal system as society’s attempt to control human behavior.  The courses in this specialization examine how the science and profession of psychology may be applied to the legal system.

Students critically analyze the behavioral assumptions underlying legal issues and assess how psychological knowledge might enhance or change current law.  With an emphasis on research, you will be expected to engage in focused areas of psycho-legal research that will have social justice implications for both psychology and law. The Forensic Psychology Specialization is designed to encourage the pursuit of graduate studies in forensic and clinical psychology, law, and criminal justice. It will also help to prepare students for entry-level positions in the criminal justice system.

Phd in psychology: legal psychology.

Our Doctor of Philosophy in Psychology with a major in Legal Psychology focuses on issues such as witness memory, interrogations, investigative interviewing, lineups, deception detection and juror decision-making. FIU is one of the few universities in the world with a doctoral concentration in legal psychology.

Our program provides a solid foundation in the traditional, current and emerging trends in the field. Students complete a series of courses designed to provide a thorough understanding of psychological theory and methodology as well as applied and basic research. Note, our program does not provide training for a career as a forensic psychologist.

The department of psychology is committed to a student body that is representative of the community in which it is located and the greater global society in which its alumni will work, teach, serve and conduct research. To this end, the department aligns with the mission of an Hispanic Serving Institution (HSI) which is to support expansion of educational opportunities for Hispanic Americans and other underrepresented populations.

What is a Forensic Psychology Degree?

The Forensic Psychology BA program at Florida Tech is designed for students who want to learn how psychological theory and research are used in the criminal justice system and related fields. Students gain a comprehensive understanding of human behavior, including criminality, as well as important skills in data analysis, writing, and research.

Florida Tech is one of the only forensic psychology schools in the nation. In fact, its forensic psychology degree program is the only undergraduate program of its kind in the state of Florida.

At the intersection of psychology and the legal system, the program provides students with a strong forensic emphasis in a private school atmosphere of small classes and close interaction with faculty. Students benefit from a robust array of internship options, faculty-led research programs, and applied research projects through partnerships with the FBI and other agencies, reviewing and coding case files.

Specialize in Child Advocacy

Unlike other forensic psychology schools, Florida Tech offers a specialization in child advocacy. Focusing on ethical, realistic, and culturally sensitive content, this program is of interest to forensic, applied behavior analysis, and clinical psychology students who plan to work with children. Students learn about the various disciplinary responses to child maltreatment and will develop a multidisciplinary understanding of the most efficient responses.

Florida Tech is the perfect place for a BA in Forensic Psychology. The 130-acre campus is located on the Space Coast (so named because of the presence of NASA and the Kennedy Space Center on Cape Canaveral just north of us), minutes away from the Indian River Lagoon, the most diverse estuary in North America.

The area has the fifth largest high-tech workforce in the country, with more than 5,000 high-tech corporations and government and military organizations located nearby. This workforce also provides an abundance of internship and employment opportunities.

Florida Tech is just over the causeway from the Atlantic Ocean with its 72 miles of beautiful beaches, and a short trip to the Florida Keys or the Orlando theme parks. We also have a rich campus life that includes a wide range of intramural and collegiate sports, clubs, and social activities.

Beyond the classroom, forensic psychology degree majors build leadership experience through internships and participation in academic organizations like the Forensic Psychology Association, student government, and over 100 other campus-wide student organizations.

All forensic psychology majors complete an internship during their senior year with direct experience in the field. Each experience is different, but all require students to gather information and data to present as a formal research project in a university-wide research colloquium. Internship experiences may occur at local police agencies, state attorney’s office, public defender’s office, the BSU, or NCIS.

This program is designed for science graduates interested in pursuing a science-based graduate curriculum that includes a research project and thesis completion under the direction of a faculty member. Practicing forensic scientists may take courses at FIU (and transfer up to six credits from another institution) and conduct the research project in their laboratory. 

The goal of this program is to graduate scientists who can work as forensic science practitioners conducting casework  examinations  or to provide advanced science education to students interested in continuing their education towards a PhD  or another terminal degree such as a law degree.

This program is designed to meet the requirements of the DNA Advisory Board for DNA analysts in the Technical Leader position (for DNA track students) and meets the criteria of the   American Academy of Forensic Sciences (AAFS)   for   Forensic Science Education Programs Accreditation Commission (FEPAC)  accreditation.
