Artificial Intelligence Transforming the World Essay (Article)

Introduction: summary of the main points of the article, the relevance of artificial intelligence on the households, importance of artificial intelligence on the business, relevance of artificial intelligence on the local government.

Artificial intelligence (AI) is a multifunctional tool that allows individuals to reevaluate how to combine information, analyze data, and apply the ensuing insights to enhance decision-making (West & Allen, 2018). The article explores how technology is changing the world for better or worse, as well as what it will look like when AI reaches its full potential. In summary, the above article focuses on Artificial Intelligence’s effects on households, businesses, as well as local government.

Artificial intelligence makes difficult and tedious household chores easier for humans, for instance, robots that mow the lawn or clean houses as needed. As a result, an individual will only need to do the little jobs that the robot cannot currently handle. Thus, one will be released from tiresome and ordinary tasks to focus on the vital aspects of life. Right now, comfortability is still the primary concern for any human being. Thus, AI technology will support the user more as it improves.

AI has various advantages in terms of worker productivity and customer relations. Large ride-sharing companies are studying autonomous cars and expanding taxi and car-sharing services in the United States, such as Uber and Lyft (West & Allen, 2018). Automation of production processes and service provision can be managed by artificial intelligence. It can handle and maintain the requisite environmental factors for product storage, for instance, monitor warehouse balances, process payments, and log and respond to customer requests (West & Allen, 2018). AI-based bots can offer 24/7 user request service at any time that is convenient for the client. Therefore, businesses may strengthen the loyalty of their current consumers and draw in new ones by providing better interactions and quicker responses.

Local Governments can operate more effectively, enabling an organization to structure its primary operational duties more effectively (West & Allen, 2018). AI can assist managers in keeping up with policies and determining the most critical efforts for residents. The possible effects of any program on the community can then be planned for and measured by managers. For example, AI is being utilized to modify traffic light timing in Los Angeles, San Antonio, and Pittsburgh (West & Allen, 2018). It can also remove a great deal of prejudice. People are disposed to unfair and subjective decision-making. Creating decisions that need objectivity, such as hiring, is much harder (West & Allen, 2018). Decisions made by local governments based on data can give underfunded departments an advantage.

To conclude, even though most people are unfamiliar with AI, the world is on the verge of altering various industries through technology and data processing. For instance, as discussed above, AI has enormous potential for improving public safety: relevant authorities in both the local as well as state government Local, as well as state authorities, may indeed utilize this advanced technology and prediction analysis to assess which sections of their municipalities and regions are most susceptible to natural calamities such as earthquakes and storms. Applicable operations have already changed decision-making, marketing strategies, risk management, and system efficiency in banking, public safety, universal healthcare, crime control, infrastructure, and smart cities. These innovations yield significant economic as well as social advantages to the economy.

Introduction Of Artificial Intelligence

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is a branch of computer science that studies the way computers decide and understand data. The goal of AI is to create machines that can learn, adapt and respond like humans do, solve problems as humans do, and even outperform humans in some tasks.

There are two main types of AI: narrow or weak AI, which performs a specific task, and general or strong AI, which can perform any intellectual task that a human can. Examples of narrow AI include Siri or Alexa, which perform specific tasks such as answering questions or playing music.

General AI, on the other hand, has not yet been achieved and is the subject of much research and debate.

Overview of the main applications of AI We mostly used AI in robotics. It is used to enable robots to make rational decisions without being programmed for every situation. We can give robots general instructions on how to perform tasks but can decide for themselves which actions to take depending on their surroundings and the context of their work.

One of the most significant applications of AI is machine learning. This involves training algorithms on large sets of data, allowing them to improve their performance over time without being explicitly programmed.

This has led to the development of sophisticated systems such as self-driving cars, image recognition, and natural language processing.

Machine Learning

We defined machine learning as an area of artificial intelligence in which computers learn from experience. With the help of machine learning, machines can adapt what they have learned from past experiences to new situations without being programmed specifically for those situations.

Machine learning is a subset of artificial intelligence that focuses on algorithms that give machines the ability to “learn”, without being explicitly programmed.

The general idea behind machine learning is that we can use algorithms to teach computers so they can learn on their own.

When an algorithm is trained, it gives the computer a set of rules for how to perform a specific task. These rules are based on input data and the task to be done. The input data is information gathered from a system.

In machine learning, the algorithm is trained on large amounts of data, and then when it is put to use in a new situation, it learns on its own to find the best set of rules for that new situation.

In the field of marketing, machine learning is used to target customers’ buying habits. Algorithms in this field learn over time, acquiring data on how to tailor ads toward each individual customer.

Many websites use machine learning to collect data on how users interact with the site and other sites. For example, an eCommerce website uses machine learning to learn about its customers’ preferences, so that it can recommend certain products based on those preferences.

Impact of AI on industries

As computers and automation continue to become more sophisticated, Artificial Intelligence (AI) has been introduced into our lives more and more. There are a variety of ways in which AI is impacting people’s day-to-day lives.

Artificial Intelligence has achieved near-perfect accuracy in a large variety of health-related problems. One such example is computer-assisted medical decision-making (CAMD).

CAMD AI and computers can review the patient’s history, gather data from electronic health record (EHR) systems, and perform calculations in order to help a physician make a more informed decision about the patient.

Artificial Intelligence has helped traders, and investors monitor the stock market. Larger companies such as Google and Facebook have used AI to predict the movements of the stock market.

Companies are now using robots to do many tasks. It automated many of the robots that are used in manufacturing tasks that were previously done by humans. Robots have allowed companies to have more productivity without the cost of human labor.

We can use artificial Intelligence in a variety of other applications such as transportation, security, education, and retail.

Societal and Ethical Implications

Today, we have reached a point where artificial intelligence is an essential part of our daily lives. We can find it in our technology, and it has implications for how we interact with the world.

Some of these implications are beneficial, while others have the potential to cause harm. It’s important that we think about these implications, and the ethics of artificial intelligence, as it becomes more widespread in our society.

One way that A.I. affects us directly with our jobs. In the past, when new technology was developed, workers in the industry could find jobs that required similar skills as before. However, this is not true for artificial intelligence and software automation.

ecause of artificial intelligence, it has created some jobs, while others have been lost. This causes problems in the workforce. Besides losing jobs directly, workers may lose their retirement plans, pension plans, and also their medical insurance benefits.

Either it’s a job loss or economic inequality… Choose wisely.

By Nick Black

In recent years, our nation has seen a gradual shift towards an automated society where artificial intelligence helps create our daily lives. The rise of A.I. has been more noticeable than before, and the impacts have been far-reaching.

It is essential that we consider the implications of artificial intelligence and ensure that A.I. has a positive impact on our society.

We can see one of the most prevalent uses of AI today in automated cars and trucks. It’s estimated that over half of all traffic accidents resulted in the driver being at fault. In recent years, several transportation companies have developed self-driving cars.

This has led to a rise in employment for people who can program or work with A.I. on vehicles. However, auto manufacturing industries have seen many people lose their jobs because of technological advances.

These losses are not just limited to traffic jobs either. Several people in the airline industry have lost their jobs because of technological advances such as computerized boarding systems.

Another way that AI is affecting our jobs is with automated and computerized cashiers. Many supermarket chains have now switched to these automated systems, which makes it difficult for those who worked as cashiers to retrain for a new job.

The workers that lose their jobs because of the technological changes will find it difficult to find new jobs.

Essay on Artificial Intelligence

Artificial Intelligence is not just a name for a programming language. It is the idea that machines can do things they cannot, either at present or soon. These days, computers are becoming able to do things we didn’t think they could do just a few years ago.

They are becoming more and more intelligent, with more and more human-like thought processes. Artificial Intelligence is any form of intelligence artificially created in a machine by following a set of computer program instructions.

Artificial intelligence is a new branch of computer science, but the idea has been around almost as long as the computer. There are three types of Artificial Intelligence:

  • Strong & Weak AI

We achieve strong Artificial Intelligence through the use of a powerful computer or a cluster of computers (that can be connected via the internet), along with plenty of memory and powerful, large working space. Weak Artificial Intelligence is a little more modest in its expectations.

Strong AI aims to produce machines capable of reasoning, understanding, and speaking as humans. Weak AI aims to produce machines with general intelligence (intelligence in all areas) similar to that of humans.

Persistent Artificial Intelligence, in one form or another, may well be with us for the foreseeable future.

Imitative AI can only copy the knowledge or intelligence of a human being without actually understanding it.

The basic components of Artificial Intelligence are:

  • Learning Algorithm.
  • Knowledge Base.
  • Heuristic Search System / Planning System.

Importance of Artificial Intelligence:

  • It makes the impossible possible.
  • It helps in getting better results with less effort.
  • It helps in learning much faster.
  • It helps in solving any type of problem.
  • It helps in performing many different types of work.
  • It makes the machines intelligent, not human-like.

Advantages of Artificial Intelligence:

  • It helps in saving time and money.
  • It is a great help for disabled people or people with poor memory.
  • It is the only invention that can solve problems using different methods and techniques.
  • It can be used for all types of work.

Disadvantages of Artificial Intelligence:

  • It may kill our own intelligence.
  • It can cause the loss of jobs to humans if we use it in the right way
  • t can cause the advancement of killer Robots that can kill humans.
  • It can take over the entire world.
  • It is important to use Artificial Intelligence with caution.
  • It can create more problems than it solves.
  • It may cause us to lose our sense of judgment and sensibility.

Artificial Intelligence has many applications in education, the economy, health care, and the military. Artificial Intelligence is the use of computers to do the things that we humans do in a much more intelligent and efficient way.

Artificial Intelligence has the potential to impact every aspect of our lives, from transportation to finance, from how we communicate to how we learn.

There are some people who worry that, as machines become smarter and more powerful, they could take over the world. Others think humans will remain in control.

We hope this article artificial intelligence essay helps students learn more about Artificial Intelligence by providing them with information that they can use to write their own essays or research paper on the subject.

Artificial Intelligence Argumentative Essay

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is the kind of intelligence displayed by machines. It is the capacity of a machine, specifically a computer, to replicate mental functions. The natural intelligence of people is in contrast to artificial intelligence. Numerous technologies are being created to educate computer systems on how to plan, understand, learn from experience, recognize objects, make judgments, and solve issues. Machines can carry out human-like tasks like driving a car or having a conversation by mimicking these abilities. AI has ingrained itself into humans’ daily lives and is here to stay. It is working alongside humans to efficiently and quickly meet societal needs, which is having a significant, beneficial impact on numerous industries and people’s lives. Some people feel that AI has become so efficient that it could replace humans in the future. However, Artificial Intelligence cannot replace human intelligence no matter how sophisticated it may get.

AI cannot replace human intelligence because it lacks emotional intelligence. Emotional intelligence is one distinctive quality that makes human beings perpetually relevant at work. The value of emotional intelligence in the workplace, particularly when working with clients, cannot be overstated. Humans are social animals, and one fundamental, indisputable desire that they have is to feel emotionally connected to other people. While AI tries to imitate human intelligence, emotional intelligence is more difficult to mimic than intellectual intelligence (Oluwaniyi, 2023). This is because emotional intelligence requires empathy and a profound understanding of the human condition, particularly suffering and pain (Oluwaniyi, 2023). AI is incapable of experiencing these feelings. Smart corporate executives and entrepreneurs are aware of the value of appealing to the emotions of their personnel and customers. Such degrees of human connection is impossible for machines to accomplish, but there are techniques for humans to develop their emotional intelligence. Systems with artificial intelligence are quick, logical, and precise. However, they lack intuition, empathy, and cultural awareness (Prajapat, 2022). It is these abilities that make humans more effective. Only a human being can read a person’s facial expression and know just what to say.

In the same breath, AI is only able to operate using the data it is given. Anything beyond that would be asking too much of it, and machines are not made that way. Therefore, the machine is useless if the data entered into it does not include a new field of work or if its algorithm does not account for unexpected events. These circumstances are frequent in the manufacturing and tech sectors, and AI builders are continuously looking for interim solutions (Oluwaniyi, 2023). One of the many prevalent misconceptions about artificial intelligence is the notion that technologies will automatically adapt to any circumstance. It follows that AI will never permeate every industry and reduce the need for human professional expertise (Oluwaniyi, 2023). AI cannot easily mimic human reasoning or the capacity of the human brain to analyze, develop, innovate, maneuver, and collect information.

AI is also limited by its coding and its inability to think creatively. AI’s coding prevents them from coming up with original solutions to a variety of developing issues. Robots are designed to operate within their constraints (Prajapat, 2022). A machine could think for itself someday. However, that will not happen anytime soon in the real world. Artificial intelligence cannot analyze the context, consider complex events critically, or create intricate plans (Prajapat, 2022). Teams and organizations connect with the outside world regularly. However, AI can only process information that has already been input into its system. It cannot account for the influence from outside, unlike humans. In real work environments, it is important to have the flexibility to distill a vision and plan while coping with abrupt changes and skewed information sharing (Prajapat, 2022). Human intuition, a crucial component of daily work, especially for high-level executives, drives this skill.

Further, AI lacks soft skills. In the workplace, soft skills are a must for every employee. To name just a few, they include collaboration, focus on detail, creative and critical thinking, excellent communication skills, and interpersonal skills (Larson, 2021). Every industry needs these soft skills, so one must acquire them if one wants to thrive in one’s career. These are skills that humans learn and are expected to have. Learning them is beneficial for everybody, regardless of position. Both business leaders and a group of field personnel in any industry depend on these skills to succeed. Consequently, humans have an advantage over AI in the workplace thanks to soft skills. Soft skills, however, are alien to artificially intelligent computers. These soft skills are essential for professional development and progress, but AI cannot create them (Larson, 2021). Higher levels of emotional intelligence and thinking are needed to develop the skills.

Additionally, it is general knowledge that AI is a creation of humans and it is humans that make it work. Without human intelligence, artificial intelligence would not exist. Artificial intelligence is intelligence created by humans. The lines of code that are used to create AI are written by humans. Humans provide the data that AI machines use to operate (Larson, 2021). Humans are also the ones who operate these machines. Human services will become more and more in demand as AI applications expand. These machines need to be built, run, and maintained by someone who also designs the AI systems (Larson, 2021). This can only be done by humans. These facts give one the confidence to refute any theories that AI will replace human intelligence.

Furthermore, while humans can develop relationships, AI will never achieve that. Relationships are the foundation of many things. Humans have to communicate and work together with fellow humans. Additionally, many people do better individually when working in teams. On the same note, teams produce better and more inventive results, according to numerous studies (Prajapat, 2022). The most crucial component of employee engagement is an emotional commitment and ties with teammates, which demonstrate how much humans care about their work and the organizations they work for. Because people prefer to work with like-minded individuals, relationships also aid in locating partners and clients (Prajapat, 2022). However, machines are unable to understand this emotional aspect of human behavior.

In addition, AI will never express empathy, whereas humans can. Humans can express their emotions, including joy, satisfaction, grief, thanksgiving, hope, goodness, and optimism (Prajapat, 2022). There are a virtually infinite number of different emotions that humans can feel and let out. Furthermore, it is impossible to imagine AI being able to read others’ emotions and display all expressions better than a human being can. Several work situations call for the establishment of trust and human-to-human connections in order to get workers to relax, open up, and communicate about themselves (Prajapat, 2022). While AI-based devices can mimic human speech, they do not have empathy and the human touch.

AI also falls short of the human intelligence level in that it requires fact-checking. The fact that AI chatbots, such as ChatGPT, often make mistakes and need human moderators to double-check their facts is a major issue. While AI can learn incredibly quickly, it does not have common sense and is simply unable to reason and challenge the truth to the same extent that humans can (Oluwaniyi, 2023). This is why technology users should probably refrain from asking AI chatbots certain questions. The lesson here is that fact-checking will probably become a serious career in the future since artificial intelligence cannot regulate itself and requires external supervision (Oluwaniyi, 2023). One might want to hone their research skills in the interim in anticipation of this potential future career path.

Further, AI cannot replace such important human skills as critical thinking, time management, interpersonal skills, and analytical skills. Machines are quite good at analyzing data, but they lack the human critical-thought ability. It is a skill that is required in many professions, such as commerce, law, and medicine. On the same note, while machines are capable of performing tasks quickly and efficiently, they are not as good at setting priorities or managing their time as humans are (Cremer, 2020). Time management is essential in many different industries, including healthcare, education, and project management. Similarly, interpersonal skills, such as dispute resolution, active listening, and empathy enable humans to develop important connections and interactions with fellow humans. These skills are required for many different professions, including human resource management, social work, and counseling. On another note, machines can analyze data and provide recommendations, but they do not have the human ability to evaluate the data and develop conclusions (Cremer, 2020). Analytical skills are essential in many different disciplines, including finance, engineering, and science.

Some people could argue that with the rate at which AI is evolving, it could soon catch up with and replace human intelligence. The practice of humans outsourcing their work to machines began with routine, repetitive physical jobs such as weaving. Machines have advanced to the point where they can now perform tasks that could be considered cognitively complicated, such as solving mathematical equations, understanding speech and language, and writing. So, it appears that machines are prepared to duplicate not just human physical work but also human’s mental work. In the twenty-first century, AI is improving to the point that it can perform many activities better than humans, making humans appear ready to delegate their intelligence to machines (Cremer & Kasparov, 2021). With this most recent trend, it appears as though everything will soon be automatable, which means that no work will be immune from being delegated to robots. This picture of the future of labor resembles a zero-sum contest in which there can be only one victor. However, this interpretation of how AI will affect the workplace is misleading. The contention of whether AI will replace human employees assumes that the two species share the same attributes and skills, yet this is untrue. AI-based systems are quicker, more precise, and always rational, but they lack intuition, emotion, or cultural sensitivity (Cremer & Kasparov, 2021). It is precisely these skills that humans have, which make them superior to machines.

Some people also argue that since AI may outperform humans in many different aspects, it will push people out of jobs in a few years to come. For instance, according to Larkin (2022), over 67 percent of American workers believe robots will take their jobs within fifty years. The use of artificial intelligence applications in the workplace is growing, and many current positions will be replaced by them. However, the kind of work that such applications can perform, is often repetitious ones needing less sophisticated reasoning. As the world transitions to a more connected information and communication technology ecosystem, new positions for people will also be created by changing workplace demands. According to an analysis by the World Economic Forum, while machines using AI will displace roughly 85 million jobs in 2025, AI will also create about 97 million new employment positions in the same year (“The Future of Jobs Report 2020,” 2020). Thus, the concern should be how humans can collaborate with AI rather than having it replace them. This is what people should concentrate on. Because, it will be difficult, even impossible, to survive in the modern era without AI. Similarly, AI will not survive without the input of humans.

No matter the level to which AI may advance, it will not replace human intelligence nor will it replace humans at the workplace. The human-like intelligence is still very distant from what the world’s AI technology can accomplish. Despite all the concerns, the majority of AI machines are built to be exceptionally good at tackling a specific problem in the setting of a certain data system. On the other hand, human imagination, wisdom, and contextual knowledge are essential to the success of AI. This is due to the straightforward fact that people will always be able to provide value that robots cannot. Thus, it can be summed up that AI’s abilities will enhance humanity rather than replace it. Because of this, top-tier and progressive firms have begun implementing AI to improve their experiences, productivity, and organizational agility. Overall, it can be seen that as AI technology advances, more jobs may be created.

Artificial intelligence (AI) – the simulation of human intelligence in a machine – has long gone from delusion to necessity in today’s world. It has been the most progressive development in the last few decades, intruding into every known human field. Although AI is not a futuristic vision, it underpins present-day life in several disciplines, including health, finance, national security, environment, and agriculture. From helping healthcare professionals to spot potential anomalies to identifying criminals, AI has proved itself out and out miraculous. Likewise, its use is equally significant in augmenting the economy, detecting erratic climate changes, and increasing the yield of agriculture output. However, despite its splendid rewards in every walk of life, AI has become a controversial arena on account of the threats it poses to human beings. Apprehensively, the predominant perturbation is that a machine would not need to be smarter than humans, or it would pose a critical risk. For instance, in the case of social media, the algorithms have substantial control over what people choose to engage with, thus, invading the privacy of its users and exploiting their information. Another biggest fear is the idea that AI is going to overrule the human world. In other words, AI would eventually replace human beings because of its overpowering nature, competing with comparatively weaker human capabilities, thus, increasing unemployment and laziness. Hence, despite valid concerns, the effects of AI on the world are undeniable, and it keeps developing every day. However, precautious severe steps must need to be taken to use the positive aspects of the invention to create a better world.

Artificial intelligence (AI) is a term used to describe machines performing human-like cognitive processes such as learning, understanding, reasoning and interacting. In fact, it is a scientific field that uses a computer to store data and responds to robotics and machines for specific commands based on stored data. In simple terms, AI is the ability of a system to think, learn, and perform tasks based on the instruction it is fed with. However, AI that has started engulfing every walk of human life comes with its merits and demerits.

To begin with its merits, artificial intelligence has revolutionized the field of medicine. It has been beneficial not only in diagnostic but also in therapeutic treatment. For instance, through very accurate diagnostic scans like mammography, computed tomography, echocardiography, etc., AI helps predict if a patient is susceptible to breast cancer, brain injury, or stroke. Moreover, machine learning enables individuals to monitor their health through personalized medicine devices such as smartwatches, android phones, walking bands, etc. The more personalized data the devices’ algorithms are fed with, the more accurate they can understand a user’s profile, enabling health care to spot potential anomalies on time. The electronic health record, in fact, is an electronic version of a patient’s medical history that may include all of the key demographics, progress notes, problems, and past medical history. Briefly, AI has transformed the same approach toward the medical field.

Furthermore, AI plays the role of diesel to drive the economy worldwide. Rapidly advancing computing capability with accuracy has made it attainable to assemble, calculate, and transfer large volumes of data in no time. Moreover, AI has also increased labour productivity and a virtual workforce capable of solving problems and self-learning. In a journal published by European Parliament, Accenture forecasts that AI could double economic growth rates by 2023 by increasing labour productivity and diffusion of innovation. Cutting it short, AI has imposed unprecedented impacts on various production sectors because of its ability to generate new revenue, thus, accelerating economic growth at a prodigious rate.

Additionally, the recent breakthrough of AI is gradually reaching a point where it can be used in military applications. For example, intrusion detection-an important part of cyber security to detect malicious network activity before it compromises information availability, integrity, or confidentiality- works on the principle of AI to protect critical cyber networks. Another area where AI helps to increase cyber security is penetration testing. The penetration testing network is often represented with attack graphs or trees that depict how an adversary can exploit vulnerabilities to break into a system. Other potential AI applications that strengthen defence strategies are reconnaissance using partly autonomous vehicles and sensor systems, threat evaluation in air defence systems with high temporal requirements, intelligence analysis of emerging patterns, command and control systems, and education and training.

Moreover, AI has proved beneficial for reducing the impact of climate change. For instance, it has helped detect deforestation through satellite imagery or aerial imagery, including gathering data about where buildings and infrastructure used to stand in the past. Such a move is essential for policymaking to deal efficiently with the erratic weather changes, which are caused mainly due to deforestation. Researchers from the Carbon Tracker- an independent financial think tank- are working toward the United Nation’s goal of preventing the operationalization of new coal plants by monitoring coal plant hazardous emissions with satellite imagery. The gathered data is then used to convince the energy production industry to stop installing carbon energy plants due to their dangerous environmental impacts. So, AI may prove drastically beneficial in reducing the risks involved with fast climate change.

Lastly, the agriculture industry has made tremendous progress with the use of AI. Companies are already developing and using autonomous robust to handle essential agriculture tasks such as crop harvesting on a huge scale and faster pace than human labour. In addition, many companies now leverage computer vision algorithms to process data captured by drones to monitor crop and soil health issues. The gathered data can also be used to detect soil deficiencies, plant pests, and crop irritants to extract data needed for proper treatment, thus, increasing the yield of crops worldwide.

Despite all the benefits, AI also poses severe challenges to humans in the shape of demerits. As Elon Musk aptly says, “Artificial intelligence would undermine our security and be detrimental to the survival of the human race in the not so distant future.” Firstly, AI is invading human privacy and exploiting information. For instance, in the case of social media, the algorithms have substantial control over what people choose to engage with. In other words, social media algorithms exploit the users and propagandize them in target marketing and selling. The case of the UK’s Brexit vote illustrating AI power for social manipulation is one such example in which AI has been used destructively. Briefly, AI has proved detrimental to human privacy and personal identification information.

Secondly, since machines are taking over most manual work, the excessive dependency on AI-based devices leads to massive unemployment. It is already happening on an industrial scale, where AI-based systems and chatbots take the e-commerce industry by storm. It may seem an exaggeration, yet AI will play an important role in executing tasks and processing in a better way than that of humans. Therefore, AI is steadily and inevitably taking over large workforce sectors and causing mass-scale unemployment, resulting in social unrest.

Thirdly, AI pictures possible worst-case scenarios, including a complete overtake of human affairs and the incapacitation of human abilities. Experts, researchers, and scientists often warn that human beings are creating a new god that can be merciful or evil. According to AI researchers, machines are predicted to be better than us in translating languages in 2024, driving a truck by 2027, writing a bestselling book by 2049, and doing surgery by 2053. Hence, it is likely that AI-based machines will overpower human beings shortly. Fourthly, AI-operated systems are likely to be used for nefarious acts, such as delivering viruses to soft wares, manipulating systems, and hacking sensitive projects. Since AI is way faster and more capable than humans reach, it would be almost impossible for man to control the machine-based damage in a short time. Similarly, there are many AI-enabled forms of terrorism to deal with due to the introduction of robotic swarms to attack or deliver disease remotely. Hence, to deal with AI-initiated terrorism, more AI-based technology would be needed to adjust the potential threat.

Last but not least, the increasing penetration of AI into numerous aspects of life has drastically changed the perspective of decision-making through advanced robot advisers that make decisions based on analytical considerations without any emotional involvement. Resultantly, the machines perform multiple tasks and execute critical decisions, either with or without human supervision. Thus, it is feared that AI would also outstrip humans in analytical learning and critical decision-making.

In a nutshell, AI is machine learning that has resulted in a human thrust of technological advancements. Man has reached the era of industrialization and computerization, but he has not sopped here. Instead, he is trying more and more to advance in science and technology. The idea – a product of computer science and its applications- AI has brought improvement and up-gradation in various disciplines, including medicine, economy, security, transportation, astronomy, environment, and entertainment. Further, an AI system has developed automatic driverless commuter trains, robotic pets, and motorized assistants. However, as stated, with the perks come to the perils; the biggest dilemma people face is the machines dominating human beings, leading to unemployment and terrorism. Invading people’s privacy and exploiting their personal information is another considerable problem human beings face owing to AI. Nonetheless, regardless of constructive and destructive consequences, AI has taken us where humans are between the devil and the deep sea. Therefore, it is high time researchers and AI professionals limit their goals of AI-enabled systems to control the ensuing issues before computers overtake humans.

essay on artificial intelligence with outline

  • Vassilis Cutsuridis 1 , 2

In this position paper, I outline the caveats of the current artificial intelligence (AI) field driven by deep learning (DL) and large data volumes. Although AI/DL has demonstrated huge potential and attracted huge investments globally, it encounters big problems – it not only need to collect huge datasets and spend enormous time and resources to be trained on them, but also the trained system cannot deal effectively with any never encountered before (novel) data. From a human perspective, any current AI/DL system is completely unintelligent. It is only able to represent information but have no awareness of what this information means. I propose as an alternative the Neuromorphic Cognitive Learning Systems (NCLS), intimate imitations of animal and human brains, able to address the AI/DL limitations and achieve true artificial general intelligence. Similar to human and animal brains NCLS are unparalleled in their ability to rapidly, and on their own, adapt and learn from changing and unexpected environmental contingencies with very limited resources. I describe how NCLS driven AI inspired by human/animal brains can pave the way to new computing technologies with the potential to revolutionize the industry, economy and society. It is my strong belief that NCLS investigations will have major impact to real-time autonomous systems to achieve human-like intelligence capabilities.

(e)         Accelerated hacking and terrorism

Stephen Hawking, when saying, “ Intelligence is the ability to adapt to change” might have Artificial Intelligence (AI) in mind on account of its pervasive intrusion into every known human field so much so that fears are emerging that it may take up human jobs, rendering us useless for good. It can be understood from a little incident occurred in a town near Hiroshima in Japan, where a 30 year old lady was in hospital suffering from ovarian cancer. She was on beta-blocker: a drug used for stabilizing blood pressure. Doctors worked diligently to assist the sick lady but were unaware that she had only four and a half years to live. The question whether something could have had helped the doctors to better deal with that case to make survival of the lady possible has the answer in affirmative that yes, it is AI. However, this answer poses a new question about the nature of AI itself. It is, in fact, a scientific field that uses computers to store data and respond to robotics or machines for certain commands based on the stored data. It is also called machine intelligence. It has progressed so miraculously in the last few decades, that it has brought huge changes in almost all fields of life. Different AI-driven applications offer help to professionals, business persons, educators, and marketers alike. Its use varies from personalized health monitoring and care to enabling healthcare professionals to spot potential anomalies, from searching and rescuing missing people through drones to saving people trapped in difficult situations. It is also being used in identifying criminals and predicting earthquakes. Despite these advantages, it has become a controversial arena on account of the threats that the scientific community is predicting risks it poses to human beings. Along with the splendid rewards it has brought for us, AI also has serious demerits. The biggest fear is the idea that AI technology is going to overrule human world. This means that AI will eventually replace human beings because of its exceedingly overpowering nature competing with comparatively weaker human capabilities. In other words, despite AI having resounding merits in the field of medicine, economic growth, climate change, transportation, industrial engineering etc., AI has demerits in that it can be used for criminal activities such as exploitation of information, money laundering, terror financing and loss of jobs.

To begin with, AI has revolutionized the field of medicine as it constantly saving patients. For example, through a very accurate procedure it scans the medical data and helps predict if a patient is susceptible to heart attacks or strokes. This machine learning ability is enabling individuals to monitor their health through devices such as smart watches, wrist bands, walking bands etc . The more personal data these algorithms are fed with, the better they are able to understand a user’s profile, enabling healthcare professionals to spot potential anomalies on time. Already built profiling system makes the medical professionals utilize that computer charting system, and electronic health record . Such a record is, in fact, an electronic version of a patient’s medical history maintained by the providers over time that may include all of the key administrative clinical data relevant to that person’s care under a particular provider, including demographics, progress notes, problems, medications, vital signs, past medical history, immunizations, laboratory data and radiology reports. Briefly, such a vast use of AI has transformed the very approach toward medical field.

Furthermore, AI is seen as an engine of productivity and economic growth. Yet its unprecedented impacts are in efficiency with which things are done in the post decision-making process through the analysis of troves of data. In a journal published by the European Parliament, Accenture forecasts that by 2035, AI could double annual global economic growth rates. It further states that AI will drive this growth in three important ways; first, it will cause a robust increase in labor productivity as much as 40 percent on account of innovative technologies enabling more efficient workforce. Second, it will create a new virtual workforce capable of solving problems and self-learning. Third, the economy will benefit from the diffusion of innovation, which will have serious impacts on different sectors on account of its ability to generate new revenue streams. Briefly put it, AI is going to accelerate economic growth at an unprecedented rate.

Moreover, AI has also proved beneficial for decreasing the impacts of climate change much better than before. For  example, recently it has helped in the detection of deforestation through satellite imagery, or aerial imagery, including gathering of data about where buildings, and infrastructure used to stand in the past. Such a move is essential in policymaking to deal with climate change issues. Researchers from Montreal Institute for Learning Algorithms (MILA), Microsoft, and ConscientAI Labs used GANs, a type of AI, to simulate what homes are likely to look like after facing damages from rising sea levels ,  and violent storms. Likewise, Carbon Tracker is an independent financial think-tank working toward the UN goal of  preventing the operationalization of new coal plants by 2020. By monitoring coal plant emissions with satellite imagery, Carbon Tracker is able to use the data it gathers to convince the finance industry that carbon plants are unprofitable. This is such a great assistance from AI that its robust use in the future may help in reducing risks involved with fast climate change.

In addition to these merits, the transportation industry has made a tremendous progress with the AI use. One of the most ground-breaking applications of AI is the manufacturing of autonomous vehicles. Once this concept was merely a sci-fi fantasy but now it has transformed into a reality. The Forbes, an American business magazine, opines that the  US logistics are embracing autonomous trucks  very fast to reap the benefits of AI in this field. According to a Mckinsey report,  65 percent global goods transportation happens through trucks . And with autonomous trucks emerging on the scene, maintenance and administration expenses are likely to plummet to 45 percent. Another transportation problem people face on daily basis, traffic congestion, is going to witness solutions through AI, as sensors and cameras embedded on roads are going to help collect the minute traffic details to assist commuters avoid congestion, seeking alternative routes. Further valuable insights like traffic predictions can be gleaned from this fast data processing to help build efficient roads and viable alternative routes. Commuters can have important details like traffic predictions, accidents or road blockages, which will save many lives. It shows AI has a vital role to play in transportation industry.

Likewise, applications of AI in the agriculture sector to help enhance agricultural yield is not only unprecedented but also marvelous. Companies are already developing and programming autonomous robots to handle essential agricultural tasks such as harvesting crops on a huge scale and faster pace than human laborers used to do in the past. Various companies are leveraging computer-vision and deep-learning algorithms to process data captured by drones and software-based technology to monitor crop and soil health issues. A Berlin-based agricultural tech startup, PEAT, has developed a deep learning application called,  Plantix , that reportedly identifies potential defects and nutrient deficiencies in the soil. Analysis of the soil and its efficiency is conducted through software algorithms which correlate particular foliage patterns with certain soil defects, plant pests and diseases to deduce data used for soil treatment to increase its cultivability and yield per acre. It means AI is going to bring an agricultural revolution.

Similarly, AI has made remarkable achievements in the space industry, too. Artificial intelligence and robotics deployed to monitor certain areas for hazardous environments, armed conflicts or space hazards are providing real-time information. Satellites equipped with AI are able to conduct 24/7 observation, supplying information to save people from alerting them not to enter unsafe or risky spots. The data collected and fed back to robots with artificial intelligence helps them process and decide to save human lives. Satellites are also helping in urban planning through monitoring of the climatic conditions in the region. Then this monitoring is used to help detect viable options for road and sewerage construction. This is how, artificial intelligence help minimize traffic, and congestion through its use in space industry.

Furthermore, AI equipped tools are quickly becoming the part of businesses, proving their utility to businessmen. Customer-relationship management (CRM) systems are engaged in gathering customer data across multiple communication channels such as email, phone and social media to help improve, and then automate marketing, and sales processes. Platforms, like sales force, have begun implementing AI that helps small business owners analyze customer feedback from those communication channels, and then automatically adjust marketing, and lead generation strategies based on the information provided through this system. Both product and service-based small businesses are also using chatbots on their websites to initiate customer communication, and help them answering their questions . Not only the AI tools help streamline the hiring and on-boarding process, but it also acquires feedback from new employees about how human resources (HR) process improvement can help impact a company’s bottom-line. Not only this helps reduce time spent during the hiring process, it also increases the number of quality applicants for a company, and saves HR time on the back end, cutting down on answering employees’ questions. In short, AI has a business revolution within the businesses and integration of different sections, providing real utility to the businessmen.

Lastly, artificial intelligence hast emerged from nowhere; rather it has always been part of the pop culture in the shape of sci-fi movies like Star Wars, Avengers ,  The Terminator , and  I, Robot . Its real evolution has now convinced the media industry professionals that it is the next media revolution. They are of the view that it will improve productivity, offering a competitive advantage through automating various tasks such as breaking down scripts, storyboarding, generating shot-lists, creating schedules, and managing movie budgets. As AI-based softwares automatically sync group recorded clips, it is estimated that the day when the AI will be a content generator is not far.

AI, however, is being used more sparingly in games than any other field to control non-player characters (NPCs). In fact, NPCs react to a player’s movement and actions are due to the use of AI. For example, in a first-person shooter, NPCs shoot a player and retreat after sensing an attack. In latest games, the involvement of AI has become even more pervasive. Not only it analyzes a player’s actions to predict their future moves, it also identifies models and changes in a gamer’s behavior in specific scenarios. Seeing this intrusion in gaming industry, NPCs have been created to adapt to a player’s behavior even in vast open-world games. This is how AI has made video games more interesting and challenging than the previous games.

These highlighted AI merits demonstrate its bright future in the situation when giants like Mark Zuckerberg have stated, “AI is a boon bestowed upon us and it will positively affect over lives in multiple ways.” Not everybody agrees to this tech-savvy innovator. Contrary to his statement, Elon Musk, another tech innovator, argues, “AI will undermine our freedom and security and be detrimental to the survival of the human race in the not so distant future.” This categorial statement by a futuristic innovator highlights challenges that AI is going to pose to the human race in the shape of its demerits.

Firstly, AI poses a serious challenge through its invasion of human privacy, and exploitation of the information gathered about individuals. Given its pervasive intrusion in general life, it is able to trace and analyze each move of a person, for cameras installed at every other place in cities use facial recognition algorithms. Using almost the same AI tools, social media, through its autonomous-powered algorithms, is also proving extremely effective in target marketing, and selling. Investigations are still afoot to work out the fault of Cambridge Analytica which used the information from 50 million Facebook users to impact the results of the 2016 U.S. Presidential Elections. The case of U.K.’s Brexit vote also illustrates AI’s power for social manipulation. By spreading data to people known through algorithms, and private information, AI targets them, and reveals data disregard of the personal consent or validity of the data retrieved, or obtained. Briefly putting it, AI is posing a serious challenge to human privacy, and personal identification information.

Secondly, as machines are taking over majority of the manual work, there will be time when there is very less manual work left for human beings, triggering a mass unemployment. And this is already happening on industrial scale that a rtificial intelligence-based systems, and  chatbots  are   taking e-commerce industry by storm . While many jobs may open due to the use of AI with predictions that there will be new openings, and new job portfolios, it seems that machine learning and machine intelligence is going to take over human jobs more than it is expected. Despite these misgivings, it may seem exaggeration, yet it is true that AI is going to play an important role in executing tasks, and processes in a better way that it has already caused a polemic over whether it will impact human-centered jobs and capabilities in the workplace or not. As AI progresses further, it is believed that it will steadily and inevitably take over large sectors of the workforce, and cause mass-scale unemployment, resulting in social unrest.

Thirdly, while AI presents tremendous opportunities, people are uncertain of its likely impacts, and are picturing possible worst-case scenarios, including complete overtake of the human affairs, and incapacitation of human abilities. Experts, researchers and scientists often issue warning statements that we, as human beings, are creating a new god that can either be merciful and good, or vicious and evil. According to AI researchers, machines are predicted to be better than us in translating languages by 2024, writing high-school essays by 2026, driving a truck by 2027, working in retail shops by 2031, writing a bestselling book by 2049 and doing a surgery by 2053. In fact, it seems that all human jobs will become automated within the next 120 years. In this scenario, it is likely that AI enabled machines are going to replace human beings.

Fourthly, since AI algorithms are man-made, they can have built-in bias inserted into the algorithms intentionally or inadvertently. If AI algorithms are built with a bias, or the data is compromised, it is certainly the case that the results are biased. This reality of biased or compromised data could lead to unintended consequences like the ones seen with discriminatory recruiting algorithms, and Microsoft’s Twitter chatbot that became racist at times. As companies build AI algorithms, they need to develop data, and insert it responsibly to keep it stay within human ability to handle, and control it. In short, there must not be intentional ,or inadvertent data insertion into machines through AI algorithms.

Fifthly, AI has led human beings to increase the speed of human performed tasks, and in some cases, it even exceeds our abilities. With automation, nefarious acts such as phishing, delivery of viruses to softwares, and manipulation of AI operated systems seem to become difficult for humans to control that there will really a very short time to do damage-control caused by such acts. Similarly, there may be new AI-enabled form of terrorism to deal with due to the expansion of autonomous drones, and the introduction of robotic swarms to remotely attacks, or the delivery of disease through nano-robots. The law enforcement and defense organizations will need to adjust to the potential threat these scenarios pose. It will take time, and extensive human reasoning to determine the best way to prepare for a future with even more AI applications to ensure that though there is a potential for adverse impacts with its further adoption, it is minimized as much as possible.

Concluding this seemingly comparative debate of AI merits and demerits, it seems AI is a human thirst for more knowledge. Man began his journey from hunting and gathering and ended up with industrialization and computerization. But that did not stop him there; the passion to excel had been a dominant driver. The AI idea, a product of computer science and its applications, has taken the first stride of being used in things such as visual perception, speech recognition, decision-making, and translation between languages. The second stride is certainly going to be unprecedent. However, a la any other technology, it has its merits and demerits. AI has brought improvements, and upgradations in the medical field in preventing heart attacks and providing personalized health monitoring. Along with that, it has helped boost economy, and reduce disastrous impacts of climate change. Transportation, agriculture, space and entertainment industries have witnessed widespread transformations. However, as stated that with the perks comes the perils, the biggest dilemma people facing is the machines dominating human beings. Recent cases of the invasion into privacy, and manipulation of private data through AI has spread ripples among the public, causing fears that if such things happen with inbuilt bias, it may lead to unimaginably disastrous consequences. Regardless of its merits and demerits, the truth is AI has taken us where we are between the devil and deep sea. However, as Stephen Hawking, an English physicist and AI professional, has said, “Computers will overtake humans with AI within the next 100 years. When that happens, we need to make sure the computers have goals aligned with ours.” However, it is yet to be seen how AI professionals meet the goals set by them through AI enabled systems in the next few years, and how they control the ensuing issues.

Press Pause on the Silicon Valley Hype Machine

essay on artificial intelligence with outline

By Julia Angwin

Ms. Angwin is a contributing Opinion writer and an investigative journalist.

It’s a little hard to believe that just over a year ago, a group of leading researchers asked for a six-month pause in the development of larger systems of artificial intelligence, fearing that the systems would become too powerful. “Should we risk loss of control of our civilization?” they asked.

There was no pause. But now, a year later, the question isn’t really whether A.I. is too smart and will take over the world. It’s whether A.I. is too stupid and unreliable to be useful. Consider this week’s announcement from OpenAI’s chief executive, Sam Altman, who promised he would unveil “new stuff” that “ feels like magic to me.” But it was just a rather routine update that makes ChatGPT cheaper and faster .

It feels like another sign that A.I. is not even close to living up to its hype. In my eyes, it’s looking less like an all-powerful being and more like a bad intern whose work is so unreliable that it’s often easier to do the task yourself. That realization has real implications for the way we, our employers and our government should deal with Silicon Valley’s latest dazzling new, new thing. Acknowledging A.I.’s flaws could help us invest our resources more efficiently and also allow us to turn our attention toward more realistic solutions.

Others voice similar concerns. “I find my feelings about A.I. are actually pretty similar to my feelings about blockchains: They do a poor job of much of what people try to do with them, they can’t do the things their creators claim they one day might, and many of the things they are well suited to do may not be altogether that beneficial,” wrote Molly White, a cryptocurrency researcher and critic , in her newsletter last month.

Let’s look at the research.

In the past 10 years, A.I. has conquered many tasks that were previously unimaginable, such as successfully identifying images, writing complete coherent sentences and transcribing audio. A.I. enabled a singer who had lost his voice to release a new song using A.I. trained with clips from his old songs.

But some of A.I.’s greatest accomplishments seem inflated. Some of you may remember that the A.I. model ChatGPT-4 aced the uniform bar exam a year ago. Turns out that it scored in the 48th percentile, not the 90th, as claimed by OpenAI , according to a re-examination by the M.I.T. researcher Eric Martínez . Or what about Google’s claim that it used A.I. to discover more than two million new chemical compounds ? A re-examination by experimental materials chemists at the University of California, Santa Barbara, found “ scant evidence for compounds that fulfill the trifecta of novelty, credibility and utility .”

Meanwhile, researchers in many fields have found that A.I. often struggles to answer even simple questions, whether about the law , medicine or voter information . Researchers have even found that A.I. does not always improve the quality of computer programming , the task it is supposed to excel at.

I don’t think we’re in cryptocurrency territory, where the hype turned out to be a cover story for a number of illegal schemes that landed a few big names in prison . But it’s also pretty clear that we’re a long way from Mr. Altman’s promise that A.I. will become “ the most powerful technology humanity has yet invented .”

Take Devin, a recently released “ A.I. software engineer ” that was breathlessly touted by the tech press. A flesh-and-bones software developer named Carl Brown decided to take on Devin . A task that took the generative A.I.-powered agent over six hours took Mr. Brown just 36 minutes. Devin also executed poorly, running a slower, outdated programming language through a complicated process. “Right now the state of the art of generative A.I. is it just does a bad, complicated, convoluted job that just makes more work for everyone else,” Mr. Brown concluded in his YouTube video .

Cognition, Devin’s maker, responded by acknowledging that Devin did not complete the output requested and added that it was eager for more feedback so it can keep improving its product. Of course, A.I. companies are always promising that an actually useful version of their technology is just around the corner. “ GPT-4 is the dumbest model any of you will ever have to use again by a lot ,” Mr. Altman said recently while talking up GPT-5 at a recent event at Stanford University.

The reality is that A.I. models can often prepare a decent first draft. But I find that when I use A.I., I have to spend almost as much time correcting and revising its output as it would have taken me to do the work myself.

And consider for a moment the possibility that perhaps A.I. isn’t going to get that much better anytime soon. After all, the A.I. companies are running out of new data on which to train their models, and they are running out of energy to fuel their power-hungry A.I. machines . Meanwhile, authors and news organizations (including The New York Times ) are contesting the legality of having their data ingested into the A.I. models without their consent, which could end up forcing quality data to be withdrawn from the models.

Given these constraints, it seems just as likely to me that generative A.I. could end up like the Roomba, the mediocre vacuum robot that does a passable job when you are home alone but not if you are expecting guests.

Companies that can get by with Roomba-quality work will, of course, still try to replace workers. But in workplaces where quality matters — and where workforces such as screenwriters and nurses are unionized — A.I. may not make significant inroads.

And if the A.I. models are relegated to producing mediocre work, they may have to compete on price rather than quality, which is never good for profit margins. In that scenario, skeptics such as Jeremy Grantham, an investor known for correctly predicting market crashes, could be right that the A.I. investment bubble is very likely to deflate soon .

The biggest question raised by a future populated by unexceptional A.I., however, is existential. Should we as a society be investing tens of billions of dollars, our precious electricity that could be used toward moving away from fossil fuels, and a generation of the brightest math and science minds on incremental improvements in mediocre email writing?

We can’t abandon work on improving A.I. The technology, however middling, is here to stay, and people are going to use it. But we should reckon with the possibility that we are investing in an ideal future that may not materialize.

Morelle outlines legislation to crack down on dangers of AI

Rep. Joe Morelle announces legislation in Rochester, Monday, May 20, 2024, that aims to put guidelines on AI and its potential dangers. (Photo by Terry Hancock/WHAM)

Rochester, N.Y. — Rep. Joe Morelle (D-Irondequoit) announced new legislation Monday that aims to combat the influence of artificial intelligence on federal elections.

The AI Transparency in Elections Act would require disclaimers on political ads using images, audio or video that are generated by AI.

Morelle said it's part of his attempt to put guidelines on AI and its potential dangers.

"Make no mistake, these constant advances in technology have brought great opportunities for learning, for advancement in medical and technical fields, for growth across our society, but it also comes with significant risk, and there's been a great deal of conversation about it," Morelle said. "It can be just as effective at promoting hatred, paranoia and propaganda as it can at doing some of the very positive things that we think about it doing."

RELATED: Bipartisan roadmap for AI regulation leaves a lot of unanswered questions

Morelle said the legislation will prevent voters from being misled in election content and with whomever they decide to vote for.

"When it comes to electing our nation's leaders, intentional, malicious misinformation campaigns facilitated with AI have the potential to undermine every institution that gives democracy its meaning," Morelle said. "Every single American should be deeply concerned about this rising trend, and we have an obligation to do everything in Washington in our power to push back against it and to protect the sanctity of our democracy."

Morelle said he plans to introduce the legislation "in the coming days" in the House. Sens. Amy Klobuchar (D-Minnesota) and Lisa Murkowski (R-Alaska) are sponsoring the bill in the Senate.

DHS warns of threats to election posed by artificial intelligence

The threat posed by artificial intelligence programs is real and creates a serious challenge going into the 2024 election , according to a new federal assessment.

The analysis, compiled by the Department of Homeland Security and obtained by ABC News, outlines how, with less than six months before Election Day , next-generation technologies meant to fuel advancement also offer opportunities for misuse that could threaten the democratic system's bedrock of elections.

"As the 2024 election cycle progresses, generative AI tools likely provide both domestic and foreign threat actors with enhanced opportunities for interference by aggravating emergent events, disrupting election processes, or attacking election infrastructure," the May 17 document said. Those tools, the bulletin said, can be wielded to "influence and sow discord" in upcoming U.S. elections by those who view them as "attractive" and "priority" targets.

MORE: Senators unveil 'roadmap' for government-funded AI research, regulation

"This is not a problem for the future. This is a problem of today," said John Cohen, the former intelligence chief at the Department of Homeland Security, and now an ABC News contributor. "Foreign and domestic threat actors have fully embraced the internet, and they are increasingly using advanced computing capabilities like artificial intelligence to conduct their illegal operations."

Already, those attempting to target elections have done so "by conducting cyber-enabled hack-and-leak campaigns, voice spoofing, online disinformation campaigns, and threatening or plotting attacks against symbols of the US elections," the bulletin said.

And now, the analysis warns, the innovative abilities of generative AI can be used against future elections. Those tools can be exploited "to confuse or overwhelm voters and election staff to disrupt their duties" by creating or sharing "altered" or deepfaked pictures, videos or audio clips "regarding the details of Election Day, such as claiming that a polling station is closed or that polling times have changed, or to generate or promote other tailored false information online."

On the eve of the New Hampshire primary in January, a robocall seeming to impersonate the voice of President Joe Biden circulated, encouraging recipients of the call to "save your vote" for the November general election, rather than participate in the state's primary, according to audio obtained at the time by ABC News.

That "generative AI-created audio message" was specifically flagged in the DHS analysis, which also noted "the timing of election-specific AI-generated media can be just as critical as the content itself, as it may take time to counter-message or debunk the false content permeating online."

"This may be one of the most difficult elections for Americans to navigate finding ground truth in our lifetimes," said Elizabeth Neumann, a DHS assistant secretary during the first years of Donald Trump's presidency, and now an ABC News contributor. "It's not just whether a politician is telling you the truth, but you won't even be able to trust your own eyes at the images you're seeing in your social media feeds, in your email and possibly even traditional media, if they don't do a good enough job vetting the material."

The 2024 race has been marked by increasingly toxic rhetoric, and the intermingling of inflammatory campaign trail hyperbole and courtroom theatrics, as Trump faces four criminal cases in which he maintains his innocence. Hate speech, misinformation and disinformation are running rampant on social media and in real life -- even as rapidly evolving technology remains vulnerable, experts said. Meanwhile, wars in the Middle East and Ukraine continue overseas, dividing Americans' views on foreign policy, with the conflicts rippling out in protests at major U.S. college campuses from coast to coast.

MORE: What to know about the new AI data center Biden announced in Wisconsin

"Threat actors can attempt to exploit deepfake videos, audio content, or other generative AI media to amplify discontent," the DHS analysis said. "A well-timed deepfake or piece of AI-generated media for a targeted audience could spur individuals to take action that may result in violence or physical disruptions directed toward the elections or candidates."

The threat landscape has grown "more diverse and more complex," and protecting the integrity of U.S. elections faces more challenges than ever due to the accelerating sophistication of artificial intelligence, top intelligence officials told lawmakers last Wednesday.

"Using every tool we have is critical as the challenge is expanding," Director of National Intelligence Avril Haines told a Senate committee holding a hearing focused on threats to the 2024 elections. "There are an increasing number of foreign actors, including non-state entities who are looking to engage in election influence activities," she said, adding "relevant emerging technologies, particularly generative AI and big data analytics, are increasing the threat by enabling the proliferation of influence actors who can conduct targeted campaigns."

"Innovations in AI have enabled foreign influence actors to produce seemingly authentic and tailored messaging more efficiently, at greater scale," Haines added. "Even as the threat landscape is becoming increasingly complicated, it is my view that the U.S. government has never been better prepared to address the challenge," in part thanks to lessons learned from the 2016 presidential election.

Authorities at every level need to be ready to defend against artificial intelligence disseminating fake news at this delicate moment, experts said.

"One of the most important things we need to be doing now is educating and preparing the public. Because they will be the people who are being targeted with this content -- the public is the intended target -- and the objective is to influence how people behave," Cohen said.

"State and local officials need to have a plan, so that when this content is detected, they can use trusted sources of communication to counteract and correct inaccurate information. Once that content hits, it's going to spread across the online media ecosystem rapidly, and has to be counteracted immediately," Cohen added. "Law enforcement and our security community have been slow to adapt to this rapidly evolving threat environment. We're still using the strategies of yesterday to deal with a threat of today. In a way, it's bringing a knife to a gunfight."
