Importance of a Good Essay Title

The journey of writing an essay is punctuated with various crucial steps, but perhaps none is as underestimated yet vital as crafting the perfect title. A title is more than just a heading; it’s the first impression, a decisive moment where readers decide whether to continue reading or move on. The significance of a good essay title cannot be overstressed, as it plays a pivotal role in the success and reception of your essay.

First Impressions Count

A title is the initial point of contact between your essay and its potential reader. Just as one dresses appropriately for an interview to make a good first impression, an essay must have a title that immediately captures attention. A compelling title acts like a window, offering a glimpse into the soul of your essay. It sets the tone and expectation, priming the reader for what lies ahead. A mundane or uninspiring title might lead to your essay being overlooked, regardless of the quality of its content.

Engagement and Curiosity

Engagement begins with curiosity, and a well-crafted title is a tool to pique the interest of the reader. It acts as a hook, intriguing the audience and sparking their curiosity. A title like “The Unseen Consequences of Climate Change” invites the reader to explore a possibly unconsidered aspect of a well-known issue. The title should entice the reader, promising them new insights and perspectives.

Reflecting the Content

A good title is a summary of your essay in a nutshell. It should be a distillation of the essence of your work. This doesn’t mean it has to be plain or direct; rather, it should encapsulate the central theme or argument in an engaging way. Titles that mislead or don’t align with the content can disappoint or confuse readers, detracting from the trustworthiness and credibility of the essay.

Keywords and Discoverability

In the digital age, where many essays are accessed online, titles play a crucial role in discoverability. Titles that incorporate relevant keywords improve the essay’s visibility on search engines and academic databases. This aspect is particularly important for students and researchers who want their work to be easily found and accessed.

Memorability

An effective title is memorable. It sticks in the reader’s mind, prompting them to think about the essay long after they’ve read it. Memorable titles often use literary devices such as alliteration, metaphors, or puns. For example, “Fahrenheit 451: The Temperature at Which Books Burn” by Ray Bradbury is not only descriptive but also intriguing and memorable.

Connection with Success

There is a direct correlation between a good title and the success of an essay. Academic essays with striking titles tend to be cited more often, as they catch the attention of other scholars and researchers. In more informal settings, a compelling title can be the difference between an essay that is widely read and shared and one that languishes in obscurity.

Tips for Essay Writing

Writing an essay can be a challenging yet rewarding process. Whether you are a student, a budding writer, or someone who needs to craft an essay for professional purposes, understanding the nuances of essay writing is essential. This comprehensive guide offers valuable tips, discusses different types of essays, and provides insights into structuring your essay effectively.

Understanding Different Types of Essays

  • Narrative Essays: These essays tell a story, usually from the writer’s perspective. The key is to engage the reader with a compelling narrative. Title Suggestion: “A Journey Unveiled: [Your Story Topic]”
  • Descriptive Essays: These focus on painting a picture with words, describing a person, place, thing, or event in vivid detail. Title Suggestion: “The Colors of [Your Description Topic]”
  • Expository Essays: These essays aim to inform or explain a topic clearly and logically. They are fact-based and devoid of personal feelings. Title Suggestion: “Unraveling the Facts: [Your Subject]”
  • Persuasive Essays: The goal here is to convince the reader to accept the writer’s point of view or recommendation. Title Suggestion: “The Case for [Your Argument]”
  • Argumentative Essays: Similar to persuasive essays but with a more balanced view, presenting both sides of an argument. Title Suggestion: “Navigating the Debate: [Your Topic]”
  • Compare and Contrast Essays: These essays examine the similarities and differences between two subjects. Title Suggestion: “Contrasting Worlds: [Subject 1] vs. [Subject 2]”

Essay Writing Tips

  • Start with Research: Before you begin writing, thoroughly research your topic. Gather all the necessary information and data to ensure your essay is well-informed and factually accurate.
  • Create an Outline: An outline helps organize your thoughts and structure your essay logically. It serves as a roadmap, guiding you through the writing process.
  • Craft a Strong Thesis Statement: Your thesis statement should clearly state your essay’s main idea or argument. It sets the direction and tone of your essay.
  • Engaging Introduction: Your introduction should capture the reader’s attention and provide a preview of what the essay will cover.
  • Body Paragraphs with Clear Arguments: Each paragraph should focus on a single idea or argument, supporting your thesis statement. Use evidence, examples, and explanations to substantiate your points.
  • Use Transition Words: Transition words help the flow of your essay, guiding readers smoothly from one idea to the next.
  • Conclude Effectively: Your conclusion should summarize the main points and restate the thesis in light of the evidence presented. It’s your final opportunity to leave a lasting impression.
  • Revise and Edit: Review your essay for any grammatical, spelling, or punctuation errors. Ensure that your essay flows logically and that your arguments are well-presented.
  • Avoid Plagiarism: Always credit your sources properly. Use citations and references to acknowledge the work of others.
  • Seek Feedback: If possible, have someone else read your essay and provide feedback. Fresh eyes can catch errors and provide a new perspective.

Structuring Your Essay

  • Introduction: Set the stage for your essay. Begin with a hook, provide background information, and end with your thesis statement.
  • Body Paragraphs: Each paragraph should begin with a topic sentence that relates to your thesis. Follow this with supporting sentences and concrete evidence.

How to Brainstorm Essay Titles

Brainstorming an essay title is a crucial step in the essay writing process. A title acts as the gateway to your content, setting the tone and expectation for the reader. Here are techniques and insights into how creativity, research, and the strategic use of keywords can lead to the creation of compelling essay titles.

Techniques for Brainstorming Essay Titles

  • Mind Mapping: Start by jotting down words or phrases related to your essay topic. This can include main themes, arguments, or any words that resonate with your subject. Mind maps help in visually organizing your thoughts and finding connections between ideas.
  • Use Writing Prompts: Writing prompts can stimulate creative thinking. For instance, if your essay is about climate change, prompts like “What if we fail to act?” or “The future of renewable energy” can lead to intriguing title ideas.
  • Play with Words: Experiment with alliterations, metaphors, and puns to make your title catchy and memorable. For example, a title like “Solar Saviors: Harnessing the Sun’s Power” uses alliteration effectively.
  • Ask Questions: Titles framed as questions can be very effective in engaging readers. They provoke thought and curiosity. For instance, “Is Artificial Intelligence the End of Human Creativity?” immediately piques interest.

The Role of Creativity and Research

  • Creativity in Titling: Creativity in titles involves thinking outside the box and experimenting with language. It’s about crafting a title that not only summarizes your essay but also captures the reader’s imagination.
  • Research for Relevance: Research ensures that your title is relevant and accurate. Look at existing literature on your topic, especially the titles of academic papers, books, and articles. Notice patterns, commonly used terms, and how titles are structured in your field.

Integrating Keywords Effectively in Titles

  • SEO-Friendly Titles: In the digital age, where many essays are accessed online, using keywords effectively in your title can boost the visibility of your work. Identify keywords that are most relevant to your topic and integrate them into your title in a way that feels natural.
  • Balancing Keywords with Creativity: While keywords help in SEO, it’s important not to sacrifice creativity. Your title should be a blend of SEO-friendly terms and creative expression. For example, “Green Revolution: The Future of Sustainable Energy” combines keywords with a creative element.
  • Keyword Positioning: Place important keywords toward the beginning of your title if possible. Titles are often truncated in search engine results, so placing keywords at the start ensures they are visible.

Example Scenarios

  • For an Argumentative Essay on Social Media: Start with keywords like ‘social media,’ ‘impact,’ ‘society.’ Brainstorm around these words to come up with titles like “Social Media: Society’s New Catalyst or Culprit?”
  • For a Descriptive Essay on a Personal Experience: Creativity takes the front seat. If your essay is about overcoming a challenge, a title like “Beyond the Abyss: My Journey of Resilience” can be compelling.
  • For an Expository Essay on Technology: Incorporate both technical terms and a layman-friendly approach. A title such as “The Digital Dawn: Explaining Blockchain Technology” strikes a balance between being informative and accessible.

✨ How to Create an Outline?

Here are a few general pieces of advice for a good structure:

  • Define your goal (Why are you preparing this speech or writing?)
  • Determine your audience (Who is going to listen to you or read your paper?)
  • Decide on your topic and thesis (What are you trying to say?)

Depending on your assignment and the goals you are trying to achieve, you can use your outline differently. Here are some outline recommendations for you:

📝 Essay Outline

Having picked your essay topic, you can start the outlining process. To compose an appropriate structure, do the following:

  • Determine the type. The use of evidence and organization heavily relies on what kind of essay you’re working on. A persuasive essay requires a more factual approach as you’re trying to convince your reader. Hence your outline will include places for examples and proof. In an opinion essay, you won’t have to provide as much evidence your outline structure will be different too
  • Create a thesis statement. Stop typing or writing for a moment and consider what you’re trying to argue. Create a clear and concise statement that thoroughly reflects your idea. Make the first sentence its preview, which grabs the reader’s attention. Then, elaborate on the thesis in the following paragraphs, proving your point.
  • Choose the most prominent ideas. Make sure they are connected to your thesis. Use them to develop your paragraphs and argumentation. Introduce each one with a topic sentence at the beginning of the respective part of your essay.
  • Organize them in a logical order. The basic structure presents an idea for a paragraph, but the order will differ. The presentation of your points in a compare and contrast essay isn’t the same as that of the other ones.

📚 Research Paper Outline

The outline of a research paper is in some way similar to essay one. You still need a thesis statement, arguments that support it, and your evidence.

Nevertheless, there are some major differences too:

  • Introduction. Start with the attention grabber and a thesis sentence. Then, there is additional information that you can provide in this section. Give an overview of the subject and a justification for your work. Explain why you picked this specific topic. Elaborate on why it’s relevant and why your research and contribution are significant. In effect, you should give a preview of the whole work and explain your objectives.
  • Materials. In this section, elaborate on the existing theoretical framework. List the relevant works and thinkers, including some case studies that you find suitable. Explain what existing material you implemented in your research and why.
  • Methods. State your research questions and your method. Tell your reader why you’ve chosen this method in particular.
  • Results. Provide a list or a description of your findings. Use visual aid (charts, graphs, tables, etc.) to illustrate them but don’t present definitive statements.
  • Discussion. Provide your critical opinion regarding the topic and the discussions that are happening in the field. Offer your ideas and interpretations.
  • Limitations. Explain how you were restricted in your research and suggest what can be done next.
  • Conclusion. In the final part of your paper, provide a brief recap of what you studied and found. Recall your initial objectives and explain what you’ve accomplished. Give some recommendations for future research. Don’t forget to list all the references used in your paper and add acknowledgments, if necessary.

💡 Creative Writing Outline

As we stated earlier, you can use this topic generator for writing a short story or a novel. To ensure the natural flow and logical order of events, you need a good outline.

Before writing, answer these questions:

  • Who is the protagonist?
  • What are the circumstances in the beginning?
  • What is your protagonist’s goal?
  • Who is the opponent or antagonist?
  • What misfortune will happen?
  • What conflict will appear?

Whether you’re composing a story for an assignment, or writing your book for fun, answer the questions beforehand. Combine them in a couple of sentences to create a synopsis that will remind you of your premise.

Then, you need to prepare significant plot points in advance. List all the good ideas that you have, make a few drafts of the key scenes. If you want to present a plot twist, plan it early on and ensure that it doesn’t contradict the story.

Develop your secondary characters before you start writing. Give them personalities and objectives, invest them in the story. Let them support the growth of your main hero.

What’s more crucial:

Pay the closest attention to characterizing your protagonist and their opponent. They hold the plot together, so make them memorable and well defined. Try to give them an intriguing background and unique personalities.

Describe the settings of your story. You can set the tone from the beginning through the surroundings. If you’re writing a mystery, the gloomy weather can enforce the unsettling atmosphere. For a science-fiction short story, you can put your characters on the space ship and dive into action, and so on.

Planning an outline helps with fighting the writer’s block as you’ll always know what to write in the scene. For additional plot points, you can use an idea generator.

🗨️ Speech Outline

To create a structure for your presentation, you can follow the essay organization but make it more detailed. With a good outline, you won’t need to write your speech at all, delivering it seemingly impromptu.

So, the basic structure:

  • The introduction, where you preview what you’re going to say. Start with a hook that draws the attention of your audience. Show that you’re thinking differently. Continue with a topic and statement, which briefly expresses the core message. Make a natural transition to the central part.
  • The body paragraphs, where you tell your audience what you’ve intended to say. List the arguments that support your thesis with illustrative examples. The more reasonable your evidence is, the more your audience will agree with you. You can tell a story in the process of presenting your proof. Make your audience feel as if you are in conversation with them. This way, you can trick the human brain into paying more attention. Try to sound natural as well, as if a light bulb appears above your head every time you come up with a point.
  • The conclusion, where you sum up what you’ve said. Recap key arguments and emphasize your message once again. Call your public to action if appropriate. Don’t talk too fast. This part your listeners should remember long after you finished.

You can use our title generator to find new proof for your speech, as it relies on the keyword of your choice.

Your commemorative speech should depend on the event, your relation to the occasion, and your personal experience. So, topics on shared values prevail:

  • courage or goals of a person (Steve Jobs)
  • inspiring examples of success
  • prominent discoveries
  • historical events that significantly affected the world (9/11, WW2)

Surreal questions (What if elephants could fly and how it would affect the economy?) can be fun if done seriously. Quirky yet positive titles (The unwritten rules of men’s toilet) are also amusing. The sense of humor differs from person to person, so don’t try to impress everyone.

An appropriate humor can save a tedious topic.

Thanks for finishing the article. We hope you found the topic generator and our tips on outlines useful. Share it with those who may need it for their speaking or writing assignments.

Forging good titles in academic writing

Published on March 20, 2015 by Shane Bryson . Revised on July 23, 2023.

The title is the first thing your reader will see, and most readers will make their first judgements of your work based on it. For this reason, it’s important to think about your titles carefully.

Instantly correct all language mistakes in your text

Table of contents

Informative, striking, appropriate, title templates, writing effective headings, other interesting articles, informative title.

Your title should, above all else, convey the topic of your paper. In other words, no matter how witty, clever, original, or otherwise appealing your title may be, it fails if it is not informative.

Decide whether you’ve given a sense of the paper’s topic and claims by comparing your title’s content to the most important aspect(s) of your dissertation statement or hypothesis and conclusions.

Striking title

A striking title is one that entices your audience to read, so know your audience’s tastes.

The analogy of cultivating sexual attraction in a prospective mate is useful here: some audiences will be enticed by a title’s edginess (as with, for example, V. Alneng’s “‘What the Fuck is a Vietnam?’ Touristic Phantasms and the Popcolonization of [the] Vietnam [War],” published in Critique on Anthropology ); others will almost always prefer a more straightforward title (as with J.C. Henderson’s “War as a tourist attraction: The case of Vietnam,” published in the International Journal of Tourism Research ).

You should be able to gauge how edgy your title can be by the tone of your discipline or the publication you’re submitting to, and your main concern should be forming a title that appeals to your readers’ specific tastes.

Consider also that a title that highlights the paper’s fresh insights will often be striking.

An endocrinologist, for example, might become very excited upon seeing the collaboratively authored article “Comparison of the effects on glycaemic control and β-cell function in newly diagnosed type 2 diabetes patients of treatment with exenatide, insulin or pioglitazone: A multicentre randomized parallel-group trial,” published in 2015 in the Journal of Internal Medicine .

This rather long title is more acceptable in the sciences, where what readers tend to find provocative in a title is the degree to which it reveals the paper’s specifics.

Appropriate title

Ensuring that your title is appropriate in a way of making sure not only that your audience understands it, but also that its appeal contributes to its meaning. To make sure the title will be understood, you need to consider how familiar your research topic will be to your audience.

In an academic essay, you can use highly technical terms in your title, but generally avoid terms that the average well-read person in your discipline might not know.

In any writing that has a broad audience, titles need to avoid language that is too sophisticated; a news article, for example, should be easily understood by all.

As a second consideration of appropriateness, make sure that your title does not entice without substance.

The title of Alneng’s paper, for example, does not use “fuck” merely to shock and therefore entice the reader; the uncommon use of a swearword here helps convey the topic of the article: more or less vulgar representations of Vietnam.

The same is true for other striking titles, such as Nancy Tuana’s “Coming to Understand: Orgasm and the Epistemology of Ignorance,” published in Hypatia .

The title’s sexually charged play on words (“coming to understand”) hooks the audience, but is not merely a hook. The pun is directly relevant to the essay’s argument, which is that sexual pleasure offers an important form of knowledge.

  • Use key terms. Find words that your audience can easily identify as markers of the topic matter. These will include, for example, terms that convey the field of research, central concepts, or subjects of study.
  • Identify the context (sometimes called “the location”). By context, I mean the source or the setting of the discussion, depending on discipline. In a history paper this might be a certain century or era; in literary studies a certain book or author; and in the sciences an organism or compound.

The following is a list of title formats, with examples of each. I’ve given the names of the publications in brackets to give a sense of how different disciplines treat titles.

Note that these are not mutually exclusive patterns (i.e. it’s possible to have various combinations; e.g. General & interesting: Informative & specific). Note also that this is not meant to be an exhaustive list.

  • Striking: Informative – The Specter of Wall Street: “Bartleby, the Scrivener” and the Language of Commodities ( American Literature )
  • Informative: Striking – Carbon capture and storage: How green can black be? ( Science )
  • General: Specific – The issues of the sixties: An exploratory study in the dynamics of public opinion ( Public Opinion Quarterly )
  • “Quotation”: Discussion (social studies) – “I’d rather not talk about it”: Adolescents’ and young adults’ use of topic avoidance in stepfamilies ( Journal of Applied Communication Research )
  • “Quotation”: Discussion (literary studies) – “I Would Prefer Not To”: Giorgio Agamben, Bartleby and the Potentiality of the Law ( Law and Critique )
  • Simple and precise – Methodological issues in the use of Tsimshian oral Traditions (Adawx) in Archaeology ( Canadian Journal of Archaeology )
  • Topic: Method – Mortality in sleep apnea patients: A multivariate analysis of risk factors ( Sleep )
  • Topic: Significance – LC3 binds externalized cardiolipin on injured mitochondria to signal mitophagy in neurons: Implications for Parkinson disease ( Autophagy )
  • Technical and very specific – Single-shot quantum nondemolition measurement of a quantum-dot electron spin using cavity exciton-polaritons ( Physical Review )

Although similar, headings are not the same as titles. Headings head paragraphs and help structure a document. Effective headings make your paper easily scannable.

Common high level headings in dissertations and research papers are “Methods”, “Research results”, and “Discussion”. Lower level headings are often more descriptive.

How to Find a Catchy Title for Your Paper/Essay

Last Updated: February 23, 2023 Fact Checked

This article was co-authored by Stephanie Wong Ken, MFA . Stephanie Wong Ken is a writer based in Canada. Coming up with an effective title can end up being the most difficult part of your essay. A catchy title can make your paper stand out from the pile and give your reader a sense of the content, slant, and perspective of your essay. To craft a strong title, you need to focus on the three elements of a standard title: the hook, the key terms, and the source or location. This structure applies specifically to academic essays, but you can also apply this structure to narrative essays.

Understanding the Structure of a Title

Step 1 Craft a hook.

  • The hook can be collection of keywords, an image, a play on words, or a quote from your essay.

Step 2 Choose one or two key terms.

  • Keep in mind good titles never state the obvious or contain generic terms or phrases. Titles like “Paper on 1950s China” or “Report on Shakespeare” are too general and do not give the reader a sense of the content of your paper. Avoid general and non specific terms like “society” “culture” “the world” or “mankind” in your title.

Step 3 Cite the source or location.

  • For example, a paper about Mao’s Great Leap Forward in Communist China in the late 1950s may have a title that has a hook (catchy phrase), one or two key terms, and the source or location (1950s Communist China). A possible title could be: “The Failure of One, the Fall of Many: Mao’s Great Leap Forward in 1950’s Communist China”.

Using Keywords or Images

Step 1 Consider the tone of your essay.

  • For example, the title of an essay about the Great Leap Forward might be something simple, professional, and clear, such as: "The Failure of the Great Leap Forward: China in the late 1950s". An essay about Shakespearean comedy may be more playful, such as: " Love's Labour Lost and Other Comedies."

Step 2 Sum up your paper in three words or less.

  • For example, an essay about the Great Leap Forward in 1950s China may focus on the failed use of industries like steel and farming by Mao’s government and the resulting mass famine in China. Three words that sum up the paper may be: steel, land, famine. A possible title of the essay could be: “Steel, Land, and Famine: The Failure of the Great Leap Forward”.

Step 3 Choose two to three keywords from your introduction or conclusion.

  • Look for two to three keywords that are short, descriptive, and clear. Consider if the words fit together in some way, or how they are very different. For example, your introduction on 1950s China may have keywords like “industrialization” “collectivization” and “collapse”. A possible title for the essay could then be: “The Collapse of Collectivization in 1950s China”.
  • In an essay on the conventions of Shakespearean comedy, the tone of the essay may be less serious or rigid, and you can look for keywords that are playful or humorous. For example, your conclusion may have keywords like “lovers” “obstacles” and “improbable” or “supernatural”. A possible title for the essay could then be: “Lovers in an Improbable Situation: The Conventions of Shakespearean Comedy.”

Step 4 Use a strange or unique image.

  • For example, a paper about a volcano could have the title: “The Day the Earth Bled: The Eruption of Mount Vesuvius”.

Using a Quote or a Play on Words

Step 1 Look for a key quote or phrase in your essay.

  • For example, an essay on Shakespearean comedy may quote A Midsummer Night’s Dream , where a character named Theseus professes his love to his betrothed, the Amazonian queen Hippolyta. “Hippolyta, I woo'd thee with my sword/ And won thy love doing thee injuries,/ But I will wed thee in another key,/With pomp, with triumph, and with reveling.”
  • A possible title for the essay may then be: “With pomp, with triumph, and with reveling: The Conventions of Shakespearean Comedy”.
  • Alternatively, you can look up a key quote or phrase that is not in your essay but reinforces central ideas or themes in your essay. Type keywords from your essay into a search engine, along with the word “quote” and see what comes up. You can then take a fragment of the quote and use it in your title.
  • For example, for an essay on Mao’s Great Leap Forward, you may use quotes from propaganda posters for the Great Leap Forward made by the Mao government, which are available online. A propaganda quote like “Brave the wind and the waves, everything has remarkable abilities” could be shortened to a title like: “Brave the wind and the waves: False Promises by Mao’s The Great Leap Forward”.

Step 2 Reword a cliche.

  • An essay on Shakespearean comedy could use the cliche “laughter is the best medicine” and change it into “laughter is thy best medicine.” A possible title could be: “Laughter is Thy Best Medicine: The Conventions of Shakespearean Comedy”.

Step 3 Go for a play on words, or a double entendre.

  • For example, an essay about missionaries in West Africa during the colonial period could have a title that plays on two key words, such as: “Prophets or profits: The European Colonial Invasion of West Africa”.

How to Make a Good Title for an Essay

The success of an essay heavily depends on its title. This may not come as a surprise given that the essay title is the first aspect to provide the reader with a sneak peek into the text. It piques our interest to read the paper in the first place and gives us a preview of what to expect from the author.

Our research paper writing help prepared a thorough guide on how to title an essay. Here you may find tips and tricks for developing an effective APA or MLA essay title. So, let's dive straight into the article for more exciting details!

Essay Title Format

During your essay writing process, ensure you know the stylistic requirements before beginning an essay. Knowing the format you need to employ is crucial because different style manuals may have varying requirements. Mostly, you could have used an APA or MLA essay title format. Our service, where you can buy essay online , explains these two in more detail below.

Essay Title MLA

If you're required to create an essay title MLA format, check whether your instructor wants you to make a separate cover page. If not, put a heading at the beginning of your work that includes your name, the name of your professor, the course ID, and, lastly, the date.

On the other hand, if you must present a cover page for your essay title MLA, then you need to include the following:

  • The name of the college
  • The title of your paper
  • The subtitle of your paper, if applicable
  • Your first and last name
  • Your teacher or professor's name
  • The class name or course number
  • The date the paper is due

The formatting instructions are as follows:

  • Double-spaced
  • Times New Roman font
  • Size 12 font
  • Apart from very short terms, each word's initial letter should be capitalized. The initial word, however, must always be uppercase.
  • The title page shouldn't include a header with the page numbers.

Essay Title APA

Having discussed the MLA format essay title, let's explore what the APA student title page includes:

  • The paper title
  • Author names
  • Institutional affiliation where the author carried out the study
  • Name and number of the course
  • Professor name
  • Page number

The title of an essay format instructions:

  • double-spaced
  • 1" margins
  • 12-point Times New Roman
  • According to APA, your title should be targeted and brief, without unnecessary words or abbreviations

How to Choose a Good Title for an Essay: Important Qualities

Nobody will read a dull headline. Your title should grab your audience's attention and encourage them to read the rest of the work. As it is one of the initial things readers see, having a strong attention grabber is essential when writing an essay from scratch. To fully understand how to come up with a title for essay that is strong and exciting, let's consider a few following factors:

Employ a Catchy Hook - Usually, the title of essay format follows a similar basic structure, especially if they are used for an academic article. The hook serves as a unique component that attracts the reader. It's a captivating statement informing others about the topic of the essay. You can also explore several types of sentences with examples that can help you develop the ideal hook structure.

Consider Topic Keywords - These are essential terms or expressions pertinent to your subject and help your reader understand the focus and body of your article. These focus keywords should serve as a brief, one- to two-word article summary. You can choose some terms from the research topic your instructor gave you, but after your thesis statement is formed, this is where you should hunt for ideas.

Use a Colon - A colon is frequently used in academic titles to separate concepts and sentences. The standard procedure is to place a clever remark or brief quotation before the colon. Although these beginning words offer flavor, they can be overdone. Because of this, some individuals find using the colon to be repugnant. Therefore be careful not to misuse this method.

Ask a Question - To write essay title that is strong, consider asking a question. But, use it with caution because posing a question will make your tone less formal. As long as the question is suitably phrased to meet the subject of your essay, feel free to employ it. Always check to see if the title question still applies to your points in the essay's body. The thesis statement should be appropriately reflected as well.

Find Inspirational Quotes - There is no formula for selecting essay titles from the textual content. You may get playful and choose any quotation, proverb, or catchphrase that applies to your particular publication and works as a title. You may also create a great essay title using well-known expressions or idioms. Doing so will help your readers relate to and feel more comfortable discussing your subject.

How to Title an Essay headline

Here are other rules for how to create a good title:

  • Title every section of writing: In the process of writing, create interesting subheadings to give your paragraphs an identity. Also, they make your text look ordered and clear.
  • The title must bear the theme of the text: choose a title that summarizes the essay.
  • Capitalize all words with certain exceptions: Capitalize the first letter of every word in the title, but do not capitalize pronouns, articles, prepositions, and conjunctions.
  • Avoid underlining the title: Since topics come in boldface, underlining it will amount to overemphasis. Some authorities say that if you must underline it, do not bolden it.
  • Review the final version of the title: Do not forget to do a quick review of the final version of the title—check for grammar, structure, spelling and so on. Re-read it to determine if the title has given justice to the essay. Confirm if the topic is catchy enough to attract your reader’s attention.
  • When using a colon in your title, follow the rules: Since we are dealing with punctuation rules here, let us talk about the colon – when you have two eye-catching topics, separate them with a colon.

Student’s Guide on How to Come Up with a Title for an Essay

Titling an essay can be easy, but there are a few core principles to be taken into account. The following tips will help you stay on track and avoid any common pitfalls.

Essay Goes First

Never start with a title! If you write it before the rest of the text, it will be based on it, and it should be vice versa. Writing an essay before choosing a heading will give you a clear understanding of what should make sense to the reader. Re-read the finished paper several times to decide on the title. The last thing to create is a title - such strategy will give more time to spend on crafting an essay outline, conducting research, or writing the paper itself.

What are you writing about? What is the style of your paper, and is it an academic essay or a free-form essay like a narrative essay? If the topic of your essay is “Do people who commit heinous crimes deserve the death penalty?” your title should not be humorous; it should be strict and to the point.

If your topic is “Why do people like watching funny cat videos?”, feel free to craft a funny title. Determine the tone of your essay and base your title on it—in consideration with the essay’s topic.

The tone can be:

  • Serious - “The implications of global warming”
  • Funny - “How cats and dogs love their masters”
  • Amiable - “Ways to fight depression”
  • Persuasive - “Why positive thinking is a must have skill for every person”
  • Informative - “Ten rules for creating a chemical at home”

The main goal of a title is to name its paper. There is no need to tell an entire story in the title, or provide any useless details. Sum up your paper in a few words! Another way to do this is to sum up your thesis statement, as it represents the main idea of your essay. Take your thesis and squeeze it into 3-4 words. Imagine that you are creating a title for your favourite newspaper or a slogan for Coca-Cola.

Don’t use fancy words! Take 2-3 main words (keywords), put them together, and stop wasting your time. Avoid jargon and abbreviations.

Search engine optimization (SEO) is something that can help any student and young writer reap benefits. While working on a title, detect the words related to the central idea of the paper. Type the words into the search field of Google and add the word “quote.” A search engine will show numerous web pages with in-text quotations that could be useful. Select the fragment you like. It is possible to learn how to make a creative title for an essay in this way.

Discover several more tips from experts:

  • Never forget the “What,” “Who,” “When,” “How,” “Why,” and “Where” questions (if you start with one of these questions, your title has a chance of getting noticed);
  • Come up with an unexpected image not related to the selected topic;
  • Sometimes, starting with a lie increases the chances of a title being able to catch an eye;
  • Review our catchy essay title examples.

Ex 4: 'A Brief History of Subcultures and How They Manifest Themselves in a Constantly Changing Socio-Economic Environment' - too long and complicated

Ex 3: ' A Deadly Beauty: The Evolution of Skin Coloration and Toxicity of the Poisonous Dart Frog' - clear, informative, and on-point.

Ex 4: 'Reconsidering Counterculture in Contemporary Society' - informative enough and brief

Looking for Some Examples of Essay Titles?

Table of Contents

Choosing an essay title is one of the essential parts of writing an essay. A good title can make your essay stand out from the rest. Your title should be eye-catching and relate to your essay’s main idea.

It is also vital that your title is not too long or too short. A compelling title will usually be between five and eight words in length. You may want to brainstorm several possible titles for your essay before settling on one.

Having used a few possible titles, narrow them down to one or two that you think are the best. Afterwards, ask someone else to read your list of possible titles and see if they have any ideas.

That’s why, we decided to dedicate today’s article to examples of essay titles that you can take inspiration from. Without further ado, let’s get cracking, shall we?

Why Do We Need a Good Title for an Essay?

black and white photo of a silver MacBook showing a word processing application

The title of your essay is important for several reasons. First, it tells your reader what your essay is about, giving them a general idea of the focus of your paper. Additionally, a good title captures the reader’s attention and encourages them to keep reading . Your instructor is your primary audience in your class essay, and you should focus on what they are looking for.

If you’re pitching your essay for publication, entering it in a contest, or submitting it as part of an application, do it. The admissions committee will read it before reading the rest of your essay so it needs a catchy, appealing title. And it might determine whether they read your essay, depending on how intriguing the title is and the rest of your submission.

As we mentioned above, a vital essay title provides the reader with a clear preview of what to expect from your writing. Even if you don’t reveal everything, it should give a general overview of what to expect from your work and pique readers’ interest.

How to Write Great Titles for Essays?

Formulating a compelling title for your research paper involves several steps. If your instructor has provided you with a research question to answer, you can select relevant keywords from there. However, looking to your thesis statement for guidance is often best. Your thesis statement should capture the central argument of your paper.

Once you have chosen appropriate keywords, the next step is to make your title as specific as possible. It is essential to ask yourself if your title accurately reflects the content of your paper.

A compelling title not only captures the main idea of your paper but also entices the reader to continue reading .

In accordance with MLA guidelines, you should capitalize the keywords in your title. This is because capitalization signals the importance of words and, by extension, the ideas they represent.

Capitalizing keywords in your title will help your readers better understand the importance of the concepts you are discussing.

Examples of Essay Titles

There are many different types of essays, and each one has its own unique requirements. However, there are some general guidelines that you can follow when choosing a title for your essay. Here are a few examples of essay titles: –

  • Impact of Social Media on our Lives
  • Role of Education in Society
  • Benefits of Exercise
  • Importance of Family
  • Impact of Technology on our Lives
  • Role of Religion in Society

These five essays , curated by Cheri Lucas Rowlands at the Discover blog , explore the ties we have (or don’t have) to our names, and the roles that they play in our evolving identities.

The essays are:

Answer These 10 Questions to Help You Choose a Website Name [+ 50 Name Suggestions]

Swetha Amaresan

Published: September 10, 2024

This poetic quote means that a name can distinguish various people, places, and objects but has no real meaning in itself.

person looking at website name ideas on a laptop

When considering website name ideas, this sentiment makes a lot of sense. Selecting a website name that simply sounds cool or interesting won’t get you far. It’s essential to pick a name with true meaning and value that accurately represents your brand. After all, if all consumers have is your website name, they should still be able to get a sense of your products or services.

What to Consider When Naming Your Website

How to name your website, 5 tools to help you name your site, 50 website name suggestions, 1. do you already have a brand name you can use for your website.

A website name is important, but it shouldn’t differ from your brand name if you already have one. Consistency is key, so you want consumers to easily locate you across platforms.

If you are launching a new business with a website and need some tips on how to come up with a brand name , read on for further considerations.

2. What type of website are you looking to create?

It’s key to assess what type of website you are creating, as this can largely affect the name you desire.

For instance, a business eCommerce website selling a brand’s products may be more inclined to select a name that relays what consumers can purchase. An educational website may prefer a more serious name. And a clever, creative name may be more suitable for a blog sharing information and expertise.

Pro tip : Check out our list of different types of websites to help inform this decision.

3. What are the key factors that differentiate your website from competitors?

As we’ve clarified, a name is nothing without meaning to back it up. So, think about some key features or factors of your brand that set it apart from competing websites.

There are many CRM businesses in the world. What differentiates HubSpot from the masses is that it’s a comprehensive, all-in-one customer platform that allows organizations to handle the entire customer lifecycle from a single place. We also have a fierce passion for and focus on inbound marketing, which is incorporated into every aspect of our product.

For this reason, the name “HubSpot” makes total sense. We positioned our product as a central “hub” for all teams to intersect and the dedicated “spot” for all things inbound marketing.

4. Is the name available?

Before you get too attached to a new website name, you must ensure it isn’t already taken. You can do this by utilizing a domain registration site, like GoDaddy . GoDaddy allows you to search for the website name you want, and the site will check if it’s available.

I searched “hubspot” as an example on GoDaddy.

Search results from searching “hubspot” on GoDaddy reveal the domain is taken.

5. What message do you want visitors to take away from your website?

Lastly, it’s vital to consider your main goal for your new website. Is it increasing brand awareness, targeting a new audience, or increasing sales? Whatever it may be, your brand goal should be part of your website name assessment.

For instance, if your goal is brand awareness, it may be helpful to include your product or service in your actual website name, so that your website’s purpose is clear to visitors. Alternately, if your goal is targeting a younger, digital audience, it may be beneficial to use a trendy name that will capture the eyes of Gen Z consumers.

Let’s say I’m launching a new online skincare business. Since I won’t have a physical storefront, I’ll rely on the success of my website. Below are the steps I will take to name my website.

1. Determine your business specifications and features.

As mentioned previously, it’s important to know what sets a company apart from competitors. For my faux business, I know I care deeply about sustainability — my products are environmentally friendly, and all packaging, including shipping materials, is compostable.

In addition, my products are made by and for people of color, with an emphasis on skin concerns that matter most to this community. This includes combatting hyperpigmentation, dry skin, and skin bleaching, providing sunscreens that don’t leave white residue on darker skin, and overall inclusivity of skin tone.

These are the types of specifications that I will keep in mind as I name my website.

2. Consider the angle of your website name.

There are many ways to provide an angle through a name. I could go for humor, with a name that’s a play on words or an inside joke for my audience. I could also consider something edgy and iconoclastic to stand out as influential and original. Or I could even go for simple and direct if I want my name to be no-nonsense.

For my business, I want my angle to be empowering. My skincare line is all about empowering people of color to use products specifically curated for them, all while feeling good about doing right by the planet. This, to me, screams empowerment and authenticity.

3. Brainstorm keywords attached to your brand that could work in a name.

Now that I know exactly what the key factors of my brand are and the angle with which I want to approach it, I can start brainstorming website name ideas. However, it’s not so easy to think of the perfect name off the bat, so I’ll first ideate keywords and phrases related to my company.

  • Services-related. Skincare, skin, makeup.
  • Mission-related. Environment, environmentalism, sustainability, eco-friendly, women, women of color, people of color, brown girl, skin tone, melanin.
  • Angle-related. Empowerment, self-love, diversity, inclusivity, self-care.
  • Product-related. Moisturizer, cleanser, toner, serum, gel, sunscreen, cream, mask, exfoliant, lotion, balm.
  • Industry-related. Beauty, natural, clean, hydrating, protection, soothing, glow, shine.

Now that I have a strong list of relevant keywords and phrases, it will be easier to string terms together and visualize a name that brings my website to life.

4. Double-check that the name doesn’t resemble a competitor’s name.

I’ve settled on a few name options from my ideation session. It’s good to have a few choices, in case one or more are already in use. My final choices are Brown Girl Beauty, Melan(In)clusive, and Skintone Skincare.

As mentioned earlier , I will first check if the website names are still available. My search results show that browngirlbeauty.com is taken, but browngirlbeauty.shop and brown-girl-beauty.com are still available. Melaninclusive.com and skintoneskincare.com are both available.

Now that I have guidance on which website names are and are not open, I can do some quick research to ensure no direct competitors share the same or similar names.

I quickly realized there already is a South Asian-inspired cosmetics, apparel, and accessories brand called Brown Girl Beauty . While not exactly the same, the products and message are close enough that I wouldn’t want to name my website something so similar. Therefore, I will nix this website name idea.

Neither SkintoneSkincare nor Melan(In)clusive produced direct competitor results, so either could be a safe choice.

5. Test out your name options.

Since I have two website names that I feel confident about, now is the time to test out the names. If you can conduct a proper research study group with A/B testing, go for it! I don’t have the resources to do this, so I will poll both names with a mix of friends, family, and colleagues who are skincare product users and/or people of color to determine which name performs best.

I selected 20 people to poll, aged 23 to 58 of varying genders, ethnicities, and skincare product usage. I supplied the name skintoneskincare.com to half the group and melaninclusive.com to the other half. I asked a series of questions, such as “What do you think this brand sells?” “What does the website name make you feel?” and “Would you purchase from this brand?”

My results showed that melaninclusive.com performed better, as my peers felt the name was clear in its purpose, clever in wordplay, and unique compared to the names of major skincare competitors. While skintoneskincare.com still had decent results, some people felt the name was too generic and that the product niche wasn’t obvious.

I also personally like the idea of trademarking a new name with Melan(In)clusive and feel the name best represents my angle of empowerment and authenticity while getting across one of my two main differentiations (inclusive skincare for all skin colors). So, I’ve finally landed on my new website name!

Pro tip: Test your ideal website name as a domain to make sure you like the way it flows in the URL. Multi-word website names will likely appear as one long name in the URL, so they should still be clear and represent the right message.

Take it further: Coming up with your name is just the first step. Using sites like WordPress to build a website can make the process a bit easier, but check out our WordPress launch checklist to ensure you have everything you need to establish your site with success.

I’ve compiled the five best tools from my experience testing out website name generators. Use any of these to support you when coming up with a custom domain .
