Other places to check out are R ainy Day Mum’s Fun and Easy Dinosaur Crafts which includes a paper plate dinosaur craft.

HOW WE USED OUR FREE DINOSAUR PRESCHOOL WORKSHEETS

Lacing cards from the free dinosaur preschool worksheets.

Instead of lacing the cards in our free dinosaur preschool worksheets, we used clear circle counters to cover each spot. However, regular lace can be used or even a piece of yarn with tape wrapped around one end.

You can also have your young learners use dot markers to cover each dot.

T-Rex, Triceratops how many other dinosaurs can you name? If you are looking for a fun and free preschool printable worksheets for dinosaurs, try these.

Dinosaur Tracing Pages

The tracing pages from the free dinosaur preschool worksheets pack were slipped into a protective sheet so that we could use a dry erase marker. I actually prefer this method so that we can redo the activity.

We also printed an extra set and used scissors to cut along the lines.

Playdough can also be used to follow the lines as it is a great fine motor and pencil grasp development tool.

The math cards were used as regular clip cards with a clothespin but they can easily be adapted as a regular page. Simply slip it into a protective sheet and use a dry erase marker or a dry erase crayon !

Quick Sensory Tip for Our Free Dinosaur Preschool Worksheets:

Don’t forget that you can create a dinosaur sensory bin by adding a few plastic dinosaurs or any toy dinosaurs and placing them in a bin or water or even dried rice!

pinnable image of a cartoon preschool class field trip looking at dinosaur bones in a museum with the text dinosaur lesson plans for preschool

Studying dinosaurs is a great way to encourage children to use their observation and visual discrimination skills. For example, even very young children can identify many dinosaurs by name and learn interesting facts to share about their favorites! Utilizing dinosaur books and dinosaur songs is a wonderful way to make this theme more lively and fun for your little ones.

Young children are the best scientists. Their endless curiosity is refreshing and allows them to question, challenge, and observe how the world works. Therefore, because our little ones are budding scientists, dinosaurs remain one of the most fascinating themes in a preschool classroom. Since dinosaurs are no longer alive, there is a sense of wonderment and interest in these mega-sized creatures.

Dinos may be extinct now but it’s so fascinating to imagine them walking the land once upon a time. With so many species of dinosaurs, your little ones are bound to find some  rawr-some  new favorites.

If your little ones are interested in dinosaurs, then you already know that a dinosaur unit will be something they are thrilled about.

Dinosaurs are fascinating at any age. I mean, tell me that as an adult you haven’t tried to imagine these gigantic animals stomping around on the Earth. Little dinosaur enthusiasts love to learn about different dinosaur species, their living and eating habits, dinosaur eggs, and even fossils! With lots of fun and hands on dinosaur learning in mind, here are some fabulous resources for planning your preschool dinosaur theme. And don’t forget, these can be dinosaur activities for toddlers, too, with the right supervision!

FAQ About a Dinosaur Theme in Preschool

So much fun learning can happen within a dinosaur theme! Here are some frequently asked questions about how to teach your preschoolers about dinosaurs.

Dinosaurs are fascinating, and preschoolers love pretending to be paleontologists–so let them! It makes a great dramatic play center . When teaching a dinosaur preschool theme, it’s even more important to provide hands-on activities. Offer plenty of dinosaur toys. Create dinosaur small worlds for pretend play or use a “dinosaur skeleton” in a sensory bin. Make fossils in play dough. Do artwork and sing dinosaur songs. And of course, read lots and lots of picture books!

Nearly all preschoolers love learning about dinosaurs, so you can do a dinosaur unit study between ages 3-5 years. But toddlers and elementary-aged children can love dinosaurs too!

Here are some major learning concepts that can be included in your dinosaur preschool lesson plans: ~ herbivores vs. carnivores ~ ways different dinosaurs move ~ ways dinosaurs defend themselves from predators ~ compare and contrast dinosaurs and other animals ~ which dinosaurs were predators ~ fossils ~ volcanoes and lava ~ extinction ~ tropical vegetation

Dinosaur Theme Preschool Activities

Learning about dinosaurs will always be best received when using hands-on activities, especially when planning activities for toddlers and preschoolers. After all, preschoolers learn best through play and activity. Here are some popular fun dinosaur activities to keep with your dinosaur lesson plans.

Literacy Activities for a Dinosaur Preschool Theme

Dino Egg Hunt and Hatch – Grab some Easter eggs (I like using the pastel ones for this) and repurpose them as dinosaur eggs. Hide letters of the alphabet in the eggs (paper or magnetic letters work well) and bury the eggs in sand or flour to make a literacy-based sensory bin. Start with the letters in your child’s name and write their name in large letters on a piece of paper. Then place plastic dinosaur toys around the eggs. Offer your preschooler an old paint brush and invite them to brush aside the sand to find the dinosaurs and eggs, just like a real paleontologist would do. After finding an egg, have them match the letter to their name. Dinosaur Book – Using 5 sheets of paper, fold them in half and staple along the seam. Watch this video on YouTube that reviews types of dinosaurs and encourage your preschooler to decide which dinosaurs they would like to draw in the booklet you made. Pause the video so your preschooler can get a good look at them.

Talk about what they notice about each dinosaur. Does it have spikes? Plates? Does it walk on all fours? etc. Have your preschooler make their dinosaur match what they see in the video. Model the drawing if necessary. Finally, invite them to write the first letter in the dinosaur’s name.

Best Fictional Dinosaur Picture Books

Since your preschooler will never see a real, live dinosaur, it’s important to read a lot of well-written picture books. Here is a dinosaur book list of just some of the dinosaur picture books I have in my own preschool library.

Best Non-Fiction Dinosaur Picture Books

Ok, there are too many fantastic picture books for a dinosaur theme. The above are just my favorite fictional picture books. Below you can find a book list for non-fiction dinosaur books that are also great for preschoolers.

Math and Science Activities for a Dinosaur Preschool Theme

10 Little Dinosaurs Counting Song – Print out the cute little dinosaurs and staple or glue them to large craft sticks and get to moving! This counting song encourages gross motor movement, so it’s perfect for getting the wiggles out AND counting to 10. Dinosaur Sort – Using any dinosaur toys you have, invite your preschooler to sort them according to a specific rule. Perhaps they want to sort them by carnivore vs. herbivore, or flying dinosaur vs land dinosaur. Assist your preschooler if they need it. You can also challenge your preschooler to come up with their own way of sorting. Anything goes with this, as long as your preschooler can explain their choices to you. Dinosaur Fossils –  Using homemade salt dough , grab some toy dinosaurs and make feet and body imprints to resemble fossils. Bake the dough and examine the fossil imprints left behind. Or use playdough and bypass the baking altogether! These can be saved and painted like a dinosaur craft, or alternately you can sue kinetic sand to make impressions if you don’t want something long-lasting.

Playful Learning Activities for a Dinosaur Preschool Theme

Pipe Cleaner ABC – Give your preschooler a challenge with this fun activity. Grab a handful of pipe cleaners and a pair of scissors. Encourage your preschooler to bend and mold the pipes to make the letters in their favorite dinosaur’s name. Be sure to show them the dinosaur’s name in print. Dinosaur Prints – Using toy dinosaurs and some washable paint, make dinosaur feet prints! Create a track of dinosaur prints along a sheet of paper and then play a counting game and move your dinosaur along the tracks. Just roll a dice and move your dinosaur forward the corresponding number of spaces. Dinosaur Small World Play – Using items from the yard, create a dinosaur small world for your toy dinosaurs to live in. Use leaves, twigs, rocks, and more to create a whole world in which to play with your dinosaur toys. Then watch the magic happen as your preschooler plays pretend.

Dinosaur Learning Toys

These are some of our favorite dinosaur toys to use in our activities. They will promote fine motor skills and creativity. Our favorite is the dinosaur egg kit. These dinosaur preschool activities are loads of fun!

Social-Emotional Activities for a Preschool Dinosaur Theme

Sharing Feelings and Affection – Go to YouTube and listen to the story Tiny T Rex and the Impossible Hug by Jonathan Stutzman. After listening, remind your preschooler of how Tiny T. Rex makes a plan and thinks of a strategy to solve his hugging problem. We can use strategies in all aspects of life, like trying to pick up a ball that seems too big or trying to share our toys. But T. Rex really shines when he decides to just be himself and use his tiny arms to share a hug. How can your preschooler just be themselves and offer support to a friend in need?

Dinosaurs that Stay Friends – Go to YouTube and listen to the story How do Dinosaurs Stay Friends? by Jane Yolen. After listening, ask your preschooler to think of all the unkind ways that the dinos were treating each other. Do those ways help you stay friends? Invite your preschooler to draw themselves as a dinosaur. What kinds of things will your dinosaur self do to help others, be a good friend, and be kind? Draw an example.

Just Plain Fun Activities for a Dinosaur Preschool Theme

Stamped Dinosaur Art – Using Duplo’s or Legos, this dino-tastic activity is easy and fun. Simply print the dinosaur template and stamp the Legos in paint to make a textured dinosaur. You can cut out the dinosaur and glue it onto come construction paper for a colorful presentation. Dinosaur Bones with q-tips – Using cotton swabs or q-tips, invite your preschooler to lay the swabs out on dark paper and make the shape of a dinosaur. They will look like dinosaur bones. You can also trace a dinosaur shape for them to follow. Count how many “bones” are needed to make the dinosaur. Don’t forget to cut some of the q-tips if needed! Dinosaur Dance – Act like a dinosaur! Invite your preschooler to make up funny dino themed moves. Encourage them to roar and make sounds just like a real dinosaur! Crank up the tunes and have some dance fun!

Online Activities for a Dinosaur Preschool Theme

Online Story – Go to YouTube and listen to the book Dinosaurs, Dinosaurs by Byron Barton. After listening, invite your preschooler to share different words from the story that describe the dinosaurs (hungry, sleepy, fierce, small, big, horned, etc.) Encourage your preschooler to draw one or two dinosaurs using those descriptions.

We are the Dinosaurs – Learn a little more about various dinosaur species with this lively song and video.

Dino Stomp Dance – This song will have your preschooler up and dancing, which is perfect for incorporating some gross motor movement into your day!

Dinosaur Theme Block Center Ideas

Materials needed: shoe boxes, yogurt container covers (4 for each box) and brad fasteners (for each yogurt cover).

With box opening facing up, make 4 holes on the sides (near the bottom) to attach the "wheels" to.

Hole punch one hole in the middle of each yogurt container cover.

Place the cover over the hole in the box and attach using a brad fastener.

Repeat for the other three "wheels".

Make and place as many of these as you wish to the block area.

Also provide small dinos (sorters or mini stuffed animals) for them to take on rides.

Dinosaur Theme Circle Time Ideas

Circle Time is such a great time for children to learn the social skills of being together as a large group AND to learn more about theme!

Prehistoric Chart

Start your theme by hanging a large piece of paper on the wall at circle time.

Ask the children what they know about these prehistoric reptiles!

Write their responses on the chart.

Offer some basic facts for them when they are done (if they haven't already told YOU about it!):

The word DINOSAUR means terrible lizard.

People never saw a real one--people were not alive when the dinosaurs were.

Some were HERBEVOIRS--they ate only plants, they were vegetarians.

Some were CARNIVOIRS--they ate meat.

Some were large and some were small.

They were hatched from eggs.

There are real fossils in the world (see if you can find some online to print and show them).

They are EXTINCT, nobody knows for sure why the all died.

My Favorite Prehistoric Creature!

Materials: A marker, 1 piece of construction paper for each child

Ask the children, one at a time, what their favorite prehistoric dino is and one fact about it. Write what they say on the paper.

"I like longnecks. They have long necks and long tails"

Provide the papers to the children at the art or writing table and let them draw their dino and decorate their page.

EXTENSION: When complete, staple together as a class book and read at the next circle time and then place it in the library!

5 Ferocious Herbivores

Materials needed: 5 herbivore dino counters or stuffed animals and one carnivore. Act out the following:

5 ferocious herbivores playing in the swamp.

Eating yummy plants, chomp, chomp, chomp.

Along came a carnivore as LOUD as could be and.....gulp! (move one herbivore aside)

Continue backwards to 0!

Place in your library area for the children to use during the day.

Snack Recipe Ideas to Cook Up for Theme!

Cooking with children helps develop their math skills and helps them to learn how to follow directions. It also allows for some great conversation! Ask many questions while cooking with your children to encourage conversation! Be sure to ask specific Space theme questions while making these fun snacks!

Prehistoric Toes and Nails

Ingredients and Items needed: whole wheat bread, soft margarine, plastic knives, toaster

In advance, cut some triangles out of the bread from the top of each slice of bread (to resemble a foot with toes!)

Toast the bread.

Give each child a slice of the toasted bread.

They spread their bread (toes!) with butter and then stick on the triangles you previously cut for nails!

Skeleton bones

Ingredients and Items Needed: refrigerated breadstick dough (an 11 ounce tube makes 10-12 bones); coarse salt; plastic knife

Unroll the tube of dough and separate the rectangular pieces.

Stretch each piece with the children to make it a bit longer.

Use the knife to help the children cut a 1 1/2 inch slit in the middle of each one.

Roll or shape the 4 corners into knobs that look like the ends of a bone.

Place bones on an ungreased baking sheet...a few inches apart.

Sprinkle some salt on them.

Bake until they are light golden brown (about 9-12 minutes).

Diplodocus Dip

Ingredients needed: 1 cup plain yogurt, 1 cup sour cream, 1/2 cup mayonnaise, 2 TBSP chopped onion, 2 TBSP parsley, 1 TSP dill weed.

Children help to put all the ingredients into a bowl.

Mix together.

Chill for about an hour.

children help to cut up some fresh vegetables (tomatoes, carrots, broccoli, celery, etc.).

Ingredients needed: ranch dressing, green food coloring; assortment of vegetables, plastic knives

Have the children help cut some vegetables (broccoli, celery, tomatoes, etc.)

Mix a drop of green food coloring into the ranch dressing and let the children take turns mixing.

Dinosaur Theme Ideas to Transform Your Dramatic Play Area

Songs and Fingerplays

Around the Prehistoric Swamp (sung to Wheels on the Bus)

The pteranodon's wings went

flap, flap, flap...flap, flap, flap...flap, flap, flap

The pteranodon's wings went flap, flap, flap around the prehistoric swamp!

The Tyrannosaurus Rex went grr, grr, grr....

The triceratops horns went poke, poke, poke

The Apatosaurus ate leaves and went crunch, crunch, crunch....

The stegosaurus' tail went spike, spike, spike....

Which One? (sung to the Muffin Man)

Which dinosaur had a tooth like a banana, tooth like a banana, tooth like a banana?

Which dinosaur had a tooth like a banana? Which one do you think? (T-Rex)

Which dinosaur had a horn on its nose?........ (Triceratops)

Which dinosaur had plates on its back?........ (Stegosaurus)

Which dinosaur ran really fast................ (T-Rex)

Turn Around sung to Teddy Bear, Teddy Bear

Dinosaurs, dinosaurs, stomped around.

Dinosaurs, dinosaurs, shook the ground.

Dinosaurs, dinosaurs, gave some fear.

Dinosaurs, dinosaurs, are no longer here!

Tyrannosaurus Rex sung to Mary Had a Little Lamb

Dinosaurs walked on this earth, on this earth, on this earth.

Dinosaurs walked on this earth...a very long time ago.

Tyrannosaurus Rex was the king, was the kink....a very long time ago.

Add facts about other prehistoric reptiles you've learned about!

Themed activities to help your Preschoolers develop those small muscles in their hands!

Estimation Foot Station

Materials: LARGE prehistoric footprints made from construction paper.

In small groups, encourage children to guess how many of them will "fit" into the foot prints. Write down their estimates.

The children then all try to stand in the footprint, count how many friends fit and then compare it to the number they estimated.

Prehistoric Memory Game

Materials Needed: Prehistoric sets of stickers and juice lids.

Make pairs of matching lids. The children then use them as a traditional memory game by placing them face down and turning over 2 to see if they match. If they do, they put them aside. If they don't match, they flip them back over and try again.

I recommend starting with only a few pairs first and then add more pairs as they become more comfortable with the game.

For children who do not have experience with this game yet, place the lids face up for them to visually find the matches.

Volcanoes from the Dinosaurs Preschool Theme

Counting Fun

Materials needed: copies of your favorite dinos or lots and lots of small dino sorters; 8X10 paper with numerals on them. Base the numbers you print on the number recognition AND the one-to-one correspondence you are working on. If your children are all able to count out 5 items, then make the papers 6-10 or higher.

Place the number papers out and a bowl of sorters or pictures. The children should count out the number of dinos to match the number that is on the paper.

EXTENSION: It may help to have the equivalent number of dots on each paper. This allows your preschoolers to place one dino per dot and therefore improve their one-to-one correspondence as well as their eye-hand coordination.

Themed Music and Movement Activities and Ideas to get your Preschoolers Movin' and Groovin'!

Materials Needed: large paper bags (grocery bags) and music.

Place the bags on the children's feet for dino feet. In advance, cut out dino toes (claws). Tape them onto the bags once the children "put on their feet".

Dance like dinos!

Prehistoric Hunt

Sing the traditional Goin' On a Bear Hunt song and change the words:

Going on a dino hunt (slap thighs)

And I'm not afraid. (point to self)

Look, there's a tall mountain (hand over eyes).

Can't go under it, can't go over it, I'll have to go around it!

Look, there's a river! .....Guess I'll swim across it!

There's some tall grass...... guess I'll go through it.

Look, there's a cave!......Guess I'll go IN it!

Shhh...It's dark in here!

It's cold in here!

I feel some scales..

I feel some teeth...what is it?

Quick run out of the cave, through the grass, across the river, over the mountain, back to our house, close the door...

Phew...We went on a dino hunt, and I wasn't afraid!

Dino Hokey Pokey

Sing and do the movements to this traditional dance but insert dino items instead!

You put your front paws in, you put your front paws out, you put your front paws in and you shake them all about!

You do the dino hokey and you turn yourself around, that's what it's all about!

You put your tail in.......

You put your head plates in....

You put your back plates in....

Footprint Dance

In advance make sets of different prehistoric footprints. You can make them from paper or felt, though felt could be saved and used year after year.

Tape the foot prints in pairs around your dancing area.

Play some dino themed music or just fun music!

Tell the children that when the music plays, they should come OFF the footprints and dance and move like dinos!

When the music stops, they should go to the nearest set of footprints.

SUGGESTION: Your preschoolers may not used to this type of "pick any one" type of instruction. At first, if a child starts on a blue set of prints, they think of those prints as "theirs" and if someone else goes on them, you may have a meltdown on your hands! There are several ways to start out with this!

1. As they are dancing, place their name tags near a set of prints and have them freeze when the music stops. Then instruct them to find their names.

2. As they are dancing, hand them a piece of paper or felt the same color as one of the sets of footprints. When the music stops, instruct them to freeze! And then find some footprints that are the color they are holding.

Themed Activities for the Senses!

Paleontologists

Materials needed: shaving cream, dino sorters and paint brushes.

Cover dino sorters with shaving cream. Provide spoons and paint brushes for the children to "discover" the dinos!

VARIATION: Do this same activity at the art table! Cover a dino sorter with shaving cream. Provide each child with a paint brush to find the dino! You can add paint to the shaving cream and also encourage the children to write in the shaving cream.

Materials needed: sand, rocks, plastic plants, toy dinos, dirt/soil. The children use the materials to create a prehistoric habitat!

Bathtub Fun

Materials needed: Ivory soap flakes, water, small dino counters/sorters.

Have children mix the soap flakes with water until it makes a thick paste.

They take a handful and cover a small dino with it. They should make it into the shape of an egg and be sure the dino doesn't show!

Let sit to dry. Take home and use in the bathtub!

Themed Science Activities--for your Preschool Scientists in Training!

Check them out!

Materials: Prehistoric skeleton models (available at teacher or science stores) or pictures of skeletons, magnifying glasses

Let the children check these out with magnifying glasses!

EXTENSION: Provide chalk and black paper for them to make their own x-ray-type skeletons.

Dino Eggs   Thank you Lyla D. for submitting this activity!

1 cup flour

1 cup used coffee grinds

1/2 cup salt

1/4 cup sand

In large bowl, mix all the ingredients into a dough.

Remove the dough form and knead it on a floured surface.

Hide small dinos ( or whatever) in the center of the dough and allow to dry  in a warm place for 2-3 days.

When dry, the dough will look and feel like a rock. Break open the rock with  a small hammer to reveal the dinos

Volcanoes from the Dinosaurs Preschool Theme

Materials needed: Playdough, shallow trays (1 for each child) pipettes, vinegar, baking soda, goggles

Provide playdough for the children to make their own volcanoes.

Wearing their goggles (to avoid them from touching their eyes after touching the vinegar), the children use small spoons to put baking soda in their volcano and then use the pipettes to drop vinegar on the baking soda.

The Apatosaurus' footprint was known to be approximately 24 inches wide by 48 inches tall! Make one on paper and have the children guess how many children will fit! Then have them all fit in!

EXTENSION: Ask children how big they thought an Apatosaurus was. Provide a 70 foot piece of yarn rolled in a ball. Take it outside and unroll it with the children. THAT is how long they were!

Writing Activity Ideas for Your Preschool Classroom's Theme!

Prehistoric Rubbings

Materials Needed: Dino cut-outs, paper, crayons or markers

Tape cut-outs to the table and place paper over the rubbings.

Children rub the sides of crayons over the entire paper (or they can use markers) to uncover the rubbings.

When done, encourage the children to use markers to trace the outline of the dinosaurs.

This is a great activity to help your children develop the muscles in their hands and manipulate markers or crayons.

7 Dinosaur-Themed STEAM Activities For Preschool Lesson Planning

Featured image: A young child in a green shirt is sitting at a sand table. In the sand are pieces of the Big Bones Set, some laying on top of the sand and others sticking in the sand. The young child is looking down at the bone pieces while using her left hand to pick up one of the bones. - Read full post: 7 Dinosaur-Themed STEAM Activities For Preschool Lesson Planning

A top priority for early childhood educators like yourself is incorporating lesson themes that focus on children's interests while facilitating their cognitive, social, and physical development. Dinosaurs are a perennial classroom favorite, loved by children for generations. Children love to roar, stomp, and run like these prehistoric creatures. They love to read stories about dinosaur adventures and explore fossils and dinosaur bones like paleontologists in the field.

The dinosaur-themed activities in this article are perfect for preschool classrooms. They will help children improve their communication and critical thinking skills while supporting their understanding of key educational concepts. To make these activities easier to implement in your classroom, included is a list of needed materials and provide enrichment opportunities to help you give children the best educational experiences possible.

How does Kaplan ensure these activities are age-appropriate and support the educational needs of children ages 3 to 6 years old?

As a leader in early childhood education for more than 50 years, we understand the importance of classroom activities that are founded on research and support educational best practices.  All of the activities in this article are inspired by the Gryphon House books, STEM Play: Integrating Inquiry into Learning Centers, Simple STEAM: 50+ Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math Activities for ages 3 to 6 , and the pre-K curriculum, Connect4Learning . We also categorize these activities by classroom learning center to make your job of lesson planning quick and easy!

Dinosaur-themed art activities for your preschool classroom:

1. dinosaur design.

Before starting this activity, read a book about dinosaurs, such as Meet the Dinosaurs by DK Publishing or Prehistoric Actual Size by Steve Jenkins, with your class. Place the book in your art center and encourage children to create their own dinosaur species using clay and loose parts. The book is there to help children reference the types of teeth, claws, horns, or skin coverings dinosaurs typically have. Still, you should encourage children to use their imaginations when creating their dinosaur species. Create opportunities for meaningful conversation and creative thinking by asking the children these questions while they are designing their dinosaurs:

  • How might you make your dinosaur taller or wider?
  • What materials might you add to make your dinosaur's skin feel bumpy?
  • You gave your dinosaur sharp teeth; what food do you think they like to eat?
  • Does your dinosaur live on land or in the water?
  • How might your dinosaur move around? Does it walk on four legs? Does it walk on two legs? Does it swim with flippers?

Once this activity is complete, display the dinosaurs around the classroom. Have the children compare and talk about the different species they see.

  • Clay or playdough
  • Rolling pins for texture
  • Beads or small stones
  • Cut up construction paper in various colors
  • Paper to display dinosaur names
  • Markers or crayons

Ways to enrich this activity:

Incorporate early literacy elements by asking the children to give their dinosaur a name and write it on a piece of paper to place beside their display. Children learning to write and spell can practice making marks and stringing together letters as they write the name. Every mark they make improves fine motor movements and letter recognition skills.

What inspired this activity?

The inspiration for this activity came from the book, Simple STEAM: 50+ Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math Activities for ages 3 to 6 . It also includes art center activities such as dance painting, watercolor butterflies, and suncatcher creation.

2. Shadow Portraits

This activity is a great art activity that also introduces children to the concept of light, time, and shadows. Give each child a dinosaur toy, a piece of paper, and something to draw with, then take them outdoors to a safe, sunny spot where they have plenty of room to spread out and work. Have children place their dinosaur toy on a sheet of paper and trace the shadow it creates. While observing the shadows, ask the children thought-provoking questions like:

  • What might make the shadow bigger or smaller?
  • Where do you think shadows come from?
  • What might happen when you rotate the toy?
  • What might happen to the shadow on a cloudy day?

The next step is to have children trace the outline of their dinosaur shadows and talk amongst themselves about the similarities and differences they see. Go outside at different times throughout the day to create several shadow portraits that the children can observe and compare.

Hang the shadow portraits in your classroom to create an "art gallery" to inspire further communication between children and their parents/caregivers at the end of the day.

  • Dinosaur toys
  • Pencils or crayons

Ask children to describe their shadow portrait and write their description on the front of the paper. An example of a portrait description could be "T-Rex at Noon" or "Tall Dinosaur on a Cloudy Day." This enrichment opportunity encourages using descriptive language and helps children strengthen their fine motor movements and writing skills.

The inspiration for this activity came from the book, Simple STEAM: 50+ Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math Activities for ages 3 to 6 . It also includes art center activities such as dance painting, watercolor butterflies, and suncatcher creation.

Dinosaur-themed sensory activities for your preschool classroom:

3. fossil hunters.

This activity requires a sand table or sensory bin. Place fossil or bone-shaped toys in the sand table and cover them entirely with sand. Have groups of 2-3 children work together using excavation tools such as a paintbrush or Q-tip to uncover the hidden fossils. Once the children uncover a fossil, encourage them to observe it and use their tactile senses to guess what animal or plant it might have come from.

  • Sand table or sensory bin
  • Fossil manipulatives
  • Bone-shaped toys
  • Paintbrush and/or Q-tip

Have the children create fossils by stamping the uncovered pieces in clay or Play-Doh. You can also take the children outdoors and encourage them to find natural materials for their fossil creation project. Let the fossils dry, and then use them in the sand table to add new objects for the children to explore.

This activity could also be a precursor to a dinosaur engineering activity. After the children uncover the hidden bone-shaped toys in the sand table, encourage them to build a dinosaur skeleton with the pieces. The children can display their dinosaur skeletons in a "classroom museum" and write a short sentence detailing their creation using their early literacy skills.

This activity was inspired by the book STEM Play: Integrating Inquiry into Learning Centers . This book also includes activities about scientific tools, observations, and the human body.

Dinosaur-themed dramatic play activities for your preschool classroom:

4. dino diner.

Start by reading the book How Do Dinosaurs Eat Their Food by Jane Yolen and Mark Teague. Have a conversation with children about the differences between omnivores, carnivores, and herbivores, including the types of food dinosaurs would eat based on the kind of teeth they have. Encourage children to think about their own teeth and what types of food they eat.

Lead small groups of children (4 or less) through this activity: one is a chef, one is a member of the wait staff, and the others are customers. Place several dinosaur toys in baskets with the labels herbivore, carnivore, and omnivore. When the customers arrive at the Dino Diner, they must choose a dinosaur toy that represents the dinosaur they will pretend to be while enjoying their meal. The wait staff will lead the customers to the table and hand them a menu.

On the menu, which you can create by hand, list food items under three categories: herbivore meals, carnivore meals, and omnivore meals. Herbivore meals can include fruits and vegetables such as carrots, lettuce, and apples. Carnivore meals can include meat products such as chicken, beef, or fish. Omnivore meals can include a mixture of meats, fruits, and vegetables.

The customers will place their order, choosing meals that match the dinosaur toy they chose when entering the Dino Diner. The wait staff will deliver the order to the chef, who will prepare the meals by sorting food items, pretending to cook the items, and arranging the prepared meals on plates for each customer. The wait staff will deliver the food to the table, and the customers will pay for their meal with play money once they finish eating. Let the children take turns playing each role.

This activity helps children learn to play cooperatively, make comparisons, use one-to-one correspondence, sort objects, solve problems, count money, and more.

  • A hand-written or printed menu that features food items for herbivores, carnivores, and omnivores (you can have the children create this menu by gluing images of food items on a blank sheet of paper)
  • Play food items
  • Kitchenware and cooking accessories

Ways to enrich in this activity:

A great way to enrich this activity is by incorporating early literacy concepts while children play. Children can practice writing skills by creating a hand-written menu and taking customer meal orders. They can practice early reading skills by reading from the menu and reading customer orders before cooking meals. As the children sit around the table, they can have conversations that support positive verbal communication skills.

This activity was inspired by the book STEM Play: Integrating Inquiry into Learning Centers . This book also includes activities about restaurant design, logos, and making a lemonade stand.

5. Dinosaur Doctor

Begin this activity by reading the book How Do Dinosaurs Get Well Soon? by Jane Yolen and Mark Teague, and placing it in your dramatic play center for children to reference. Discuss what dinosaurs need to survive, like food, solid bone structure, water, and housing. Then, children will take turns playing the role of doctors as they care for sick or injured dinosaur toys. As children play, encourage them to observe, investigate, and diagnose the types of illnesses and injuries they will need to mend. Ask the following questions to elicit this type of play:

  • What instruments might help you observe a dinosaur with a sore throat?
  • What kind of bandage would a dinosaur with a broken claw need?
  • How much medicine might you give a T-Rex with dino flu?
  • How do you know this dinosaur has dino flu? What symptoms might you observe that tell you that?
  • What might be wrong if a dinosaur fell off the swing and now has a hurting leg?
  • Doctor playsets or items that resemble medical tools
  • Pencil or crayon

On a large sheet of paper, create a chart with one column representing the various dinosaurs who need a doctor's visit and another representing potential illnesses and injuries the children will need to mend. As dinosaurs visit the doctor, have the children check in the appropriate column to track the various injuries and illnesses mended during the day. Here's an example of what this chart could look like:

Ask the children to hypothesize about the number of dinosaurs diagnosed with each illness or injury. As a group, count the tally marks and discuss your findings. Use "more than" or "less than" to incorporate math vocabulary as you compare your findings.

This activity was inspired by the book STEM Play: Integrating Inquiry into Learning Centers . This book also includes activities about interior design, career pretend play, and restaurant reviews.

Dinosaur-themed construction and block center activities for your preschool classroom:

6. wreck-it, rex.

A great accompaniment to this activity is the book Rex Wrecks It! by Ben Clanton. For this activity, provide children with various blocks and loose parts and encourage them to work together to build structures and towers that can withstand the force of a dinosaur in motion. As the children build, promote the development of critical-thinking skills by asking questions such as:

  • Which blocks might you choose for the bottom of your structure and why?
  • That keeps falling over. What might you add to the structure to make it more secure?
  • How might you stack the blocks so they are more difficult to knock over?
  • Is your structure more sturdy when you build it taller or wider? Why do you think that is?

After the children build their tower, roll or softly toss a dinosaur toy in the direction of the tower. Have the children observe what happens to their structure once the dinosaur comes into contact with the blocks. Encourage children to predict what they think will happen to their structures once the dinosaur makes contact with it. Continue building new structures and testing their strength until all children can enjoy this activity.

  • A variety of blocks and/or loose parts

To incorporate math concepts such as counting and number recognition, create number activity cards, starting with the number 10 and going up to 20. Have the children draw a number card from the stack and build a structure using only that amount of blocks. Again, encourage the children to hypothesize and test theories about the types of blocks and structures they can create that will withstand the force of a dinosaur.

This activity was inspired by the books STEM Play: Integrating Inquiry into Learning Centers and Simple STEAM: 50+ Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math Activities for ages 3 to 6 . Both of these books contain even more activities related to blocks, engineering, and blueprints.

7. Migration Station

This activity encourages children to think like budding engineers as they create pathways and transportation systems that help dinosaurs migrate from one location to another. This activity also introduces children to the concept of migration and why animals move to different parts of the world throughout the year.

Begin by gathering various building materials such as blocks, strings, loose parts, cardboard, etc. Place a group of dinosaur toys on one side of the children's building space to designate a starting point for the herd. Place one dinosaur toy on the opposite side of the building space to establish the final migration destination. Next, place random objects, such as baskets or tall blocks, between the two points to act as "obstacles" the dinosaurs must traverse on their migration journey.

Encourage the children to work together to build pathways, pulley systems, or steps that dinosaurs can use to cross all obstacles and safely reach their final migration destination. As the children build, inspire new ways of thinking by asking questions such as:

  • What might you create to help the dinosaurs go over this obstacle?
  • What direction should your dinosaurs go if I place an obstacle in this location?
  • How might you create a migration pathway to take your dinosaurs to the blue block for a drink of water?
  • Various blocks for building

To introduce the concepts of patterns and sequencing, incorporate blocks of different colors or shapes and create the starting point of a migration pathway following an ABAB or ABCABC pattern. Ask the children to use blocks to repeat the pattern until the dinosaurs reach their migration destination.

You can also introduce directional terms and early coding concepts by creating migration pathway blueprints that the children can use as a reference while building. Using a sheet of paper, draw and label a migration pathway using terms such as "Make a staircase that is three blocks tall" or "Turn the path by placing four blocks to the right."

Help children learn through play!

There are many ways to incorporate dinosaur-themed activities into your daily lesson plans. Use the activities above as inspiration in your classroom, and feel free to make changes to better suit the needs of the children in your care.
